I want you to meet what we are referring to as the influencer. This group over here, youve seen on youtube and the internet, 40 million of you and americans around them world watch what they do and these folks have stepped up and are fighting to help promote this whole effort. I wanted to publicly thank them all. Im not going to ask everybody to stand. You can go get a seat, but i just wanted you to see the champions of change and these guys who are champions of change. They are having the nerve to stand up and tell the entire community, at home and abroad, enough is enough is enough. Thank you all very much. Please go have a seat. Folks, look, thank you for the introduction. It doesnt make me feel old that you were not born when i wrote the law. I just want to think about this. At least you flew all the way from south africa where she is studying abroad this semester to be here today. I went to thank you. That is a long way and it an expense. You do us a great honor, lisa, for being here today. You know, you saw standing behind me represents all of you a lot of passion and lisa produced a documentary on her experience of africanamerican women who are Sexual Assault survivors and its powerful. I hope youre all going to get a chance to see it. Lisa and all the champions here today, we owe you. My four granddaughters, one is graduating from college and three who arent there yet ou. Every young woman in america owes you. Thank you for calling attention to this. Folks, last week matt and i went to unlv for an event. I think there were 12 or 150000 students. Then we went to unlv and lake lady gaga was there and shes engaged. Its not a publicist he piece. If you heard her rendition of till it happens to you, youll have no doubt about how deeply she feels and how she has suffered as a consequence of being abused. Im not sure it was on campus but she was abused at campus. At boulder, there were close to 3000 students and damon johns on shark tank was along because he has experienced with his family the abuse that has taken place against women in his life. We travel all across the country from the northeast to the southwest. Ive been everywhere from the Naval Academy where i met war house, Spelman College where i met, anyway, i wont go through it all. Clemson, i met joey wilson and syracuse, samantha, Ohio University, ohio state, excuse me, Ohio University and ohio state. I get in trouble for that. University of illinois. Its all over the country. Im looking for a simple straightforward reason. Nothing complicated about it. I believe that we have an opportunity, if if we commit ourselves to do nothing short of changing a culture as it relates to how women are treated everybody knew what was going on. I know what to deal with that. Too complicated. When he grabbed her and bent her rest he did really mean that and maybe she said something. That made him a great. Or with the husband snatch the wife because dinner was not on the table a. I was told it was a family affair. Literally. My wife says google let. The violence against women act was passed by conservative elements religious and cultural because i was interfering with the family. I hate the phrase Domestic Violence and makes it sound like a domesticated cat the ugliest form of violence there is. With a woman is a news story me and, by a lover or someone they know is an acquaintance is the most difficult to recover from. Physically psychologically all of this psychiatric studies show what do i do to make you think i could do that . What what what. Have had the solicitous truly we had courageous young woman who would testify. We briefed the bedtime because i knew there would be tried in the court of Public Opinion to testify to be were raped by individuals than the system. There was a woman named marla hanson. This was 23 years ago. A beautiful person and. And a beautiful model. With a firstrate apartment complex in manhattan. Other places like philadelphia or was he jealous it had a restaurant bar. And wanted a onebedroom apartment. Every time she would speak to her landlord he would hit on her nbc adjustive. She decided she would get out of their. She was on location and got a phone call to say that he had a one bedroom apartment she stopped downstairs on the way up to sign a new lease. So she did stop. But he hit on her again. She got up to leave and as she did the fund had hired two guys with a straight razors to slash her face which they did. When she walked out. I remember preparing her ahead of time so she was not surprised what did your mom say . Why was i a bar . What did your girlfriend said . Were you wearing a bra . How shore was your skirt. What did you say to. Kim . That is when we realized we had to do more for protection to achieve culture. Comedy though the phrase rule of thumb . Part of our culture in the late 1300s activity women were dying at the hands of their husbands because they could chastise their wives because they were property. They were chattel. Node different than the dog for a horse. Too many were dying so the common law lawyers know there was a new law developed over type in the courts. A ban could not be to a woman with the rod thicker the of the circumference of his thumb. Western civilization. We do about honor killings or genital mutilation and other things that the one and other cultures and i was very proud of the fact after rewrote the violence against women act it dropped over 60 percent. The one thing i asked the president is there any particular thing that i want . I want to read retain control to bring it into the Vice President s office. The trade general still does the prosecuting that want to name the people who ran the departments. He happily did that as did the attorney general to have. So i had a number of great women one is the basidia hogan. With the pro Football Player drag his wife out of the elevator by the hair. Cynthia went over there to get in shape. Ted years ago and nothing would have happened. And with that bureau of statistics. She came back with the most discouraging news i have received as a u. S. Senator. Were Getting Better when you wrote the law one out of four were beaten and raped. The number has not changed all. Not over 80 years. A program called it is on us. Into a virtual town meeting with hundreds of thousands of young women on College Campuses and i asked a question please let me know what one or tuesday as we could do to make it safer for you in your high school on your campus. I expected legitimate things like better lighting in parking garages. Or Campus Police from the library. You know, what i got back . Boys and men involved. So to start the program is on us. Those interviewed by millions of people in the equally famous actors and actresses the n. C. A. A. And sports organizations are calling to attention hitmen in america what constitutes me a man. What constitutes appropriate behavior . Those of you go to college almost all of you have. If there were dropped off at the curb by your mom and dad. To be powered intellectually will she be okay . Not a joke. Will she be okay . They did know the statistics. But we go. Everything from been shrinking to stranger rape generates excuses than rational. For a man to lay a hand on a woman. I have a goal sib this with every fiber in my being when i leave this office will set up a foundation to continue this. And we reached the point although we would never have violence when you drop off her daughter or four other rebel son for sexual rape to be real on campuses, you will not have that nagging worry of the back of your mind is my daughter or son . If they have changed gender. Or bisexual. That to be a victim of abuse. So i am here to thank everyone of you. So why am i so passionate . I was passionate because i was raised by a truly graceful man. It is a big man. To talk about not any of the siblings could not repeat to my fathers mantra. The greatest sin of all is the abuse of power and a cardinal sin among those is for a man to raise his hand to a woman or child. Best buy rode the of violence against women act. To issue a report of a day in the life of. 365 days to put in an actual case with the big report sent four people, to have hundreds of hours of testimony and experts and Health Professionals and opponents and survivors to do something about the culture. And how we change these things. And we have made some progress. Handed is john does 350 people literally raising the right hand to take the oath and. It cannot be given and it is a crime. And what constitutes lack of permission. Whether a bedroom no means no. Even in bed if you change your mind. No means no. Any thing that follows after that that is a crime. No also means no with you cannot give consent. What is a with college judases if youre walking dead drunk coed up the stairs walkover to save not on my watch. Much better fit with your mother or sister or vulnerable brother. Do what you do. It takes a lot of courage i am not expecting everybody to do with they have done. But i do think that everyone could do something. Just holler. Stepped away so nobody sees you. Scream if you are worried a recent film done for the same kind of program. It shows a woman being raped and there are several occasions when if somebody said something it would have stopped without intervene physically. The car, the doorman, the elevator it doesnt require heroics. Ltd. Used on a campus only two 1 2 and must report to police. 65 tell their rebate or girlfriend or Sorority Sister their teammate. To find them help find out where the help is available. They say when i was going to law school the paper chase there is a line that he says gentleman look to your lefthand right in one of you will not be here. Look in the beer. And ask yourself and i doing everything i can . And my doing everything i can . Ray have a truly great education. A great basketball player from harvard his leaving is 30 duncan as secretary of education. We give tens of millions of dollars to universities to read tea campuses. All the student aid it is called title ix. You dont get that unless you start off with equal opportunity for women. Guess what . Guess what . If you dont have a system that demonstrates you looking now for the physical safety and mentalhealth if something happens we will tonight you tens of millions of dollars in aid would end its 72 national universities. Were not going to dave any particular because some of the schools that you would to how much do they encourage will they speak to a professional to the civil side . So with colleges is universities asking what were you wearing . How much did you have to drink . Not of what happened to you or where did it happen. It doesnt need we eliminate the perception of innocence. But all of this should be taken as seriously. But because of sexual abuse any of the recent . The point is we need to engage you all. Because once all universities start reporting fell to a climate surveys. To protect what is happening on their campus. To they know somebody is abused . Where were they abuse . It just happens on campuses. There is a chinese proverb that says women hold up half of the sky. What kinds of studies . The international gdp will increase by 27 billion wherere pressing hard for the tax credit and of the five fed thousand more women in the workplace. Significantly increasing gdp. You dont have to think of it, which monday with the violence against women act . With the averted social cost to the medical bills i could not prove that them but i cant prove it now. For the center for Disease Control it is a survey. Women who have been abused suffer from a view and system compromise and Heart Disease post Traumatic Stress and if you are slightly off then no different than the military. And my generic point is you have to change the situation on campuses. We are wasting enormous resources to make us better, stronger supply will ask each one to stand up and actually to walk up on stage very brief. University of denver. The courage to challenge the diversity clear affirmative consent policy is. They didnt want to talk about a. Am exaggerating . [laughter] a survivor with of bravery to tell her story you are making a difference for women all across the country that is right that the buffalo who pulled the guy often had the courage to do it. Also valerie. University of miami. Come up. Is there any age of spending it time in the hospital the are the nurses i am serious your the single most under estimate their profession in the world to change peoples lives in the attitudes and that makes a difference. Valerie made sure that Campus Health centers theyre equipped or prepared to deal with psychological there will send you to a hospital or they dont have raped kids guess what she is doing rape kits so shes kariba the standardized procedure where at the school infirmary, qualified people to deal with the problem also we have and i pronouncing that right . Talk about taking on the tough charge at grand valley state is engaging the aggrieved community on her campus to step up because there is a lot of the evidence of the nature to be off campus with the drinking that goes on. They give for looking in the beer. It is important. Also from Virginia Tech she has the brilliant mind as big as her heart it is figuring out how the Data Analytics and it makes the difference can help us bonnie and patterns. It doesnt mean its a rationale the case you cannot convict in a pattern but showing specific intent but as to where and how did what circumstances these situations occur the same thing with cancer research. I wish i was as brave as you were. Stay with it. Also solely in from humble state had the courage to ask questions to her dog dance he answers. [laughter] and had the courage to ask some tough questions and change the of conversation about what constitutes consent. To put up posters online campuses to begin a discussion. Because ted years ago nobody would talk about this because you have to educate i need it took. Most not bad guys for what constitutes consent. Also university of california san diego in the ocean was behind them so i of standing in talking to the students and looking over my head then three people glide over in kites. Only is san diego would that happen. Keep talking. She is a and at t literally on the frontlines of care. She sees the look of fear and the damage done. When you see it and the compassion to study the campus Sexual Assault policies with your intent to hold schools accountable to make sure they have certain basic standards three honorees are men. Who have been leading the way to get men involved. From boston in university university, having a backbone to get the fraternities and athletes involved. Without first conversation in the locker room he said i have a great idea. [laughter] but now all it is changing. When did stand up. By the way as i was saying saying, it used to be 10 years ago that there is the business lunch and innovator metropolitan area and there was a list and what would you like . They would say let me tell you. But today they would say get the hell out of here because as we have liberated we have liberated the street people from knowing they are not ostracized. But when you walked in but to say i did this last night. He could not get a date with anyone on a bed. No sex appeal. An end until the end the circumstance to tell a joke about rape, vulnerability rape, vulnerability, were not changing the culture. This guy walking in the locker rooms to organize. Now the next guy is significantly is intimidated [laughter] played at Northern Colorado but is now out but to be at the university, and they have a guy who was captain of their football team. The key it clear this isnt but that is changing. J. J. Attitudes. Thanks for stepping up. Lastly, not the least, i want to say this is all about cadet first class get up here. [laughter] it is taking the case to the academy. There is much too much Sexual Assaults in the United States military. Me for hours with the cadets and the students and was starting to happen now to have an opportunity to change the culture. By the way i want to make clear im not joking. Anything. Anything a man can do. Ice sacked in my home but if you look as special forces it looks like. Attractive, polite to look like ordinary people but it guess what . When i was thus under of is one of the first to appoint one of the great honors so now i have done every academy do going back this year to do west point and two years ago they have an outfit, i john what you call them . Guess what . It takes enormous skill they wanted to meet debt the air force academy to do a flyover for graduation. But to the pilots are women. My generic point is we have to change the attitude in the military not the least of which there kerry is significant portion of the burden so these are real champions i hope you feel that way and that is what is us is all about. Students, faculty, a kosher wine dash coaches lawenforcement community community, the infirmary come on every one of us. If we do what constitutes being decent we can change this culture and my granddaughters will be better because of you. Thank you very much. [applause] no one is broader to put this birth certificate matter to rest them the donald because to get back to focusing on the issues that matter like to be fake the moon landing . [laughter] what happened at roswell . [laughter] [applause] all kidding aside we know about your credentials and experience. For example, seriously just recently in an episode of Celebrity Apprentice at the state house the cooking team did not impress the judges from omaha steaks. A lot of blame to go around derecognize the lack of problem was a lack of leadership say you didnt blame the meatloaf. You hired eric cuban. This is what would keep me up that night. [laughter]
