Please welcome Becky Norton Dunlop. Let me add my words of welcome to everyone to each one of you braved on this very cold day in washington dc. Im sure that this program will be replayed many times in some time in the dog days of august when its been run no one will believe it was 50 degrees with the wilted factor of nine when we all came together today to visit with todd. We are delighted to have todd starnes here at the Heritage Foundation. It is not his first visit here but some people might ask why would you have a book event on the deplorables guide to making America Great again when youre a research and Education Foundation . Will, the main reason is because todd talks about in his book the importance of having people be involved. Hes going to go into a lot more detail about all of this but let me just say an educated consumer is the best citizen and because we are a research and Education Foundation we do research on a lot of the issues that are going to come before the congress in the president and state legislatures in upcoming years. In order to be a truly effective deplorable, you have to be knowledgeable. About the issues that we are going to be dealing with in our country in the next upcoming days and months and even years. As you all who are here no hetage is sed on key principles, individual freedom a kid dash my key principle the Free Enterprise system, what solves the problems the needs, the wishes of the american citizens and not just americans but people around the world . The Free Enterprise system does. Constitutional governance. What it it be like nice to be back to constitutional governance, laws, traditional values. You know its very important when you think about Economic Freedom. When you think about what goes into making Economic Freedom work. Will, things that happened within a family values that you learn about in a family, integrity, hard work, respect, in the important traditional values like religious freedom, the freedom to live life according to what you believe. These kind of Cultural Values are enormously important in order to have Economic Freedom , prosper in our country in the world. And then of course a Strong National defense. I mention this because when you hear from todd today, you can hear a lot about things that american citizens should do and why they need to engage in these battles. In my point to you is the Heritage Foundation agrees with this and believes that we can be helpful to you and to all of t people watching and reading the book, become informed. Be knowledgeable so that you know what you believe and why you believe it. Why are you fighting for these things that todd is going to talk to you about. Then you can go out and make your voice heard in a way that will command respect and hopefully the elected leaders that we have in this country will follow the advice and counsel of the deplorables. So, todd starnes is here. He is with fox news radio most everyone in america has heard of todd starnes. Hes an he is an author on fox news the fair and balanced channels. He is the other four books in his latest one, the deplorables guide to making America Great again is what brings them to the podium today. Please welcome todd starnes. [applause]. Will thank you very much its an honor to be here at the Heritage Foundation and i just head to say Heritage Foundation you have indeed stayed the course and have been a beacon of light to the conservative movement in our great nation. I do to want to thank you for coming up on this very cold day. Its actually colder in washington dc than it is a new york city where i came from this morning. Thank you for braving the elements. Before i get to the heart of my remarks i like to encourage you to follow me on facebook and also we can make beautiful tweets together on twitter. I want to show a little bit about my background beforee get to the text of my comments this afternoon. Im originally from memphis, tennessee. I am also a christian man in my faith flavors everything that i do in life. In one of those people that president obama was talking about back in 2007. One of those folks who clings to his guns and clinks to his religion. And one of those folks that Hillary Clinton called a deplorable. I am proud to call myself a gun toting, bible cleaning, god loving son of a baptist. I live in brooklyn, new york among the indigenous liberal population there. Not too far from Hillary Clintons head quarters. I thought to truly understand them i needed to live in their natural habitat. Its kind of like being on a Mission Field of course among other things they dont see serve too much sweetie and that neck of the words as a say. A lot of people said todd, when did you start writing this book because it came out just a few months ago . Immediately started working on this project immediately after the election and i really probably in hindsight should have acknowledged mrs. Clinton in my book for giving me the title the deplorables guide to making America Great again. It was interesting because with another title in the event that she have actually won it was called were doomed america, your guide to the apocalypse. Fortunaty didnt have to worry about that particular book. Back to living in brooklyn, its an amazing place. We are populated, with a lot of vegetarian restaurants and yoga shops in farm to table restaurants. The one its in brooklyn only serve organic eggs harvested by amish midwives. My me amanda says im the only member of the National Rifle association in the zip code and if any of you are members you know you get a pound a mail a month from those good people you also get a really great looking ball cap and the nra ball cap its a black ball cap with the letters nra. I tell you the straight because story because in my neighborhood on the weekends right outside of our local market all of the liberal advocacy groups becky, they line up and asking for money. You got the planned parenthood, greenpeace, human rights and so on and so forth and that peta people are the worst. The fundraisers. I was heading to the market one day and i grabbed my nra ball cap and something very interesting happened when all of those liberal groups saw that i was heading to the market one day and i grabbed my nra ball cap and something very interesting happened when all of those liberal groups saw that it was like moses parting the red sea except for the peta woman. She called me as i was coming out. I was getting ready to smoke a pork butt im from the south and south and thats what we do in the south. She stopped me and i have my pork butt under my shoulder like this and she said sir do you love animals . And i said only if their deepfried and kept on going. They never bothered me after that. But you know i do believe that faith and freedom go handinhand the concept, that idea goes back to the founding of our great nation. I tell a story in the book about a man named oliver hart who is a member of the American Baptist denomination. Im a southern baptist. He was the pastor of a church in South Carolina before the founding of our nation the First Baptist church of charleston in its important in charleston they are very particular about things so its not First BaptistChurch Charleston its the First Baptist church. Pastor hart was an incredibly effective communicator. He was preaching about freedom and liberty from the pulpit. He was such a powerful communicator that word reached our Founding Fathers and those that were organizing the army to fight the british into secure our freedom. They have an idea. They were having trouble in those days trying to round up enough farmers and citizens to fight the british. So they dispatched pastor hart into the upstate of the carolinas. Along with several other ministers and their job was to recruit an army to fight for freedom. I thought it was interesting that when it came to fight for our freedom our Founding Fathers came to the church house for help. And i believe that is a lesson that we could draw from today in these very difficult days in our nation. For the past eight years americans we had been told that we are the problem, that we are not a cistian nation. We are not aexptional nation. Our traditions inner values have been ridiculed and marginalized we had marked by hollywood and dismissed by the academics. We been bullied and belittled by the and gender revolutionaries. But all that changed on election day. With a man who promised to defend religious liberty in a manner that promised to make America Great again. Now i must confess that donald trump was not my first or my second or my third choice in the republican primaries. But on election day he was the only choice. And i do believe that Hillary Clintons comments about that basket of deplorables i believe that was a turning point in the election. And it wasnt necessarily deplorable and you might remember that member that moment when she was speaking at a gathering there in new york city and she talked about the homophobic xenophobic and she went on and on talking about how Donald Trumps supporters supporters were in a basket of deplorable spirit but that wasnt the word the cost of the election. I believe it was the word irredeemable. She said we were irredeemable. She was telling us that people that believe in traditional American Values and people to believe in american sovereignty and people who believe in securing our border that our belief system is so egregious that we are beyond redemption. And i think a lot of people woke up and said wait a second, something is not right here. And i believe that was the moment the turning point that put donald trump in the white house. You know many conservatives understood what was at stake on election day. The Supreme Court in the lower courts were in danger of being lost for generations. Im willing to take the president at his word when he said hes going to defend religious liberty, easy to put conservatives on the courts i will take him at his word and i believe he is taking steps in the right direction in these early days of his administration. And im encouraged by people like neil gorsuch but i do have a question about judge corsets gorsuch you say todd, why are you concerned. Republicans have a really bad track record when it comes to putting judges on the bench. I dont know what it is. They put a little up there and they state liberal. But the republicans im not sure what happens but their gavels tend to go wobbly. I remember back when president eisenhower was asked about some of his worst decisions in his presidency and he said the two worst decisions he made were sitting on the Supreme Court i am cautiously optimistic. But we all had to play a part in holding our president and our elected leaders accountable when it comes to these kinds of decisions. Even though donald trump is president and even though he is doing things early in his administration that are pleasing conservatives we still face a very grim landscape across the fruited plains. And over the next few moments i want to share with you as of the concerns that i had regarding the state of American Values and religious liberty. You know the first is a military under the Obama Administration the greatest fighting force on the planet was turned into a social and Jeanine Petrie just. Just the other day i received an email from an officer at Lackland Air Force base in san antonio. You might have seen my column on the story. The imo the email told the airmen to stop using offensive words and phrases and among the words and phrases the military were told to avoid saying were things like boy and girl and colonial in the list goes on and on. There was a training briefing a few years ago that i reported on. The officers were told that the biggest threats of domestic terrorism was not coming from al qaeda or hamas but were coming from roman catholics evangelical christians. Just think about that for a moment. Why is it that they were teaching these young and impressionable men and women that whats happening down in the local church is it can to what al qaeda and hamas are up to. Another military email legal labeled organizations. The basic food groups. I have high hopes that general mad dog matus will route out this into a christian infant station in the pentagon. I certainly hope so. But we have also seen issues involving radical islam in this country and we have seen in our Public School system where islam has been given accommodation about christianity and other religions had been marginalized. Quite frankly Public Schools have been turned into Indoctrination Centers for the left. I believe and i document this in the book that our Public Schools are being used against us not all of them and not all teachers are bad hear me when i say that. But we have enough bad teachers with enough bad schools that its causing a big problem in our country. I believe the reason we have seen such a massive shift on cultural issues and a short amount of time is because of what is happening in our Public School system and whats happening on our University Campuses in the safest basis. Among the perpetually defendant generation. The issue of religious liberty is a key component of my book, you see religious libey is our first freedom and i contend that if youre able to chip away if youre able to marginalize and diminish religious liberty, our first freedom than every other freedom we had is in jeopardy. Just look at the evidence. A study out last year said that 40 of millenials not believe there should be limitations placed on free speech. 40 . Look at the attacks on those of us who cling to our god and the attempt to take our guns away. Again i believe that once you go after religious liberty Everything Else is up for grabs. I read a story and ive been following the story for quite some time involving a sweet grandmother in Washington State. I know we had covered hurt at fox news and im right about extensively in my book. She could be a member of the liberty bell liberty society. She is a sweet precious grandma and she inherited her flower shop from her mother. One day at someone ten customers came in and ask if should provide flowers for the upcoming samesex marriage. She pulled them aside and as gentle as graceful as a whitehaired grandmother could do she class their hand and she told these two young men why she could not do that. She said it would violate her religious belief. Then she provided these young men with several other florists around town who would do a wonderful job with their marriage ceremony. But as we know that was not good enough. Because you see in Washington State they expect a full and complete compliance. She was brought up on several charges of discrimination. Instead of just going after her business they would go after her personally. So this woman if she loses the court battle she will not only lose her business she will also lose her home and her life savings every single thing she have she will lose. This case has been petition to the Supreme Court again and explains why it is so important that we put conservative justices on the bench. Select i have a chance to talk to her and i said why dont you just provide the flowers nobody wouldve not. And she told me there in Washington State i think she was wagging her finger at me. Young man, who would you rather obey, god or the government . You know that is a question that many people around this great country had been having to ask themselves these days. The list of people like her those on and on. I am reminded of a story just a few months ago from grand rapids, michigan. The vanderbilt family they own a meat packing company. The meat sectors came by for a visit and they were in the break room and they saw some religious materials ere on the counternd o a of the usda inspectors became offended by those materials and they summoned the man to his office. Can you imagine that . Government agents summoning someone to their own office. You either remove those materials because they are offensive to us or we will remove army inspectors. If you know anything about meatpacking business if you remove the meat inspectors the usda inspectors they have to shut down the business. Fortyfive people wouldve been put out of work. So he did as he was ordered to do and removed the materials. And he has filed a formal complaint this is white groups Like Alliance of defending freedom in the American Family association are urging present trap to sign an executive order protecting religious liberty. President reagan my favorite president. I was in Junior High School when he was president. Last year we came close Franklin Graham told me that they were at a moral to be point. I think its young men and women who are unashamed to stand up for freedom and for liberty. I want to tell you about some of the stories. That i write about in this book. I had hope in america because of a young man. Football player. Fifteen minutes teammates and decided to protest the National Anthem by remaining inside the locker room. But connor chose to stand alone on the sidelines. And he did so as his teammates were coward. I had hope that america because of a young man like alex done his father serving our great nation at this very moment. Alex was in chaos in his liberal teacher wanted to explain to them about freedom of expression the teacher could not get the lighter to work. And discussed they threw old glory onto the floor. Young alex a 16yearold patriot rest to the front of the classroom and snatched the flight off the ground in ran out of the classroom. So that the flag would no longer be desecrated by that schoolteacher. You see he refused to stand by and do nothing as a flag was desecrated. I ever hope in our nation because of a young cheerleader in madison, mississippi. It wasnt long ago that a federal judge appointed to the bench by president obama told the School District that if they engaged in anything remotely religious they would be a find 10,000 per violation. While it just so happens at the High School Marching band was doing a performance of how great thou art. Im originally from the south and that is a popular him in the church that i tend and im sure the principal was counting up the number of people in the march event and he was afraid he was can have to multiply that number 10,000. Thats a lot of cookie sales. So he called the kids to the front office and said kids, im sorry your neck when you have of play that song and you will not be able to perform your halftime routine. And i want to pause for a moment say this. Once again, it illustrates the importance of not just the Supreme Court but the lower courts as well. This is a lower court ruling. Will, friday night Football Game came and it was a hot humid night in mississippi. As a players walked off the field at halftime a very strange and unsettled hush fell over the stadium there. And no one quite knew what to do. There were no marching bands. And suddenly a young lady started singing a familiar song. And one by one people in the stands began to sing along with her and before too long the entire stadium rose to their feet in defiance of their government and sang how great thou art. So the question i posed in the book is this. Who among us will stand with these people and the good people of madison mississippi. You know the liberals may try to silence our voice they may try to bully us into submission but we cannot be silent we must not be silent. They took a stand for religious liberty in the great state of mississippi and i believe that iis spreading like wildfire across the for deplane. As a quote thats often been attributed to the silence in the face of evil. God will not hold his guiltless. I believe this is a moment for every freedom 11 patriot in america. End of the time has come for all of us to stand together and with one voice the clear that we are one nation under god. In closing there is a scene and a wonderful film called we were soldiers. It tells a the story of the battle of the lot drain valley. The enemy was advancing it all appeared hopeless. A reporter for the ring i did press international was there. He was caught in the melee and when the bail it dash like bullets started flying the reporter dropped to the ground. In the middle of all of this chaos listed resolute. And i wrecking with the name like that i would expect nothing less. He walked over and he saw the reporter on the ground. And he gave the young man a swift kick. Thats what he said. That old reporter looked up at the guy and the Sergeant Major looked back down at him. The reporter rejected the weapon. Said it was a noncombatant. In the Sergeant Major said these words. There aint no such thing today sonny. My fellow countren we are surrounded the cultural bullets are flying the enemies of freedom are advancing in the time has come for all of us to stand resolute. There is just no such thing today as not being a fighter. We are freedoms last line of defense. So i say dont hide liberties only under a bushel. Let it burn bright for all to see. Its time for every gun toting bible clinging deplorable to take a thunderous stand for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Because we have something worth defending we have a heritage built on a firm foundation. So i hope our prayer on this day on every day moving forward will be that our great nation will once again be that shining city on hell. Thank you all very much. [applause]. We do had time for questions and todd has agreed to take them. If you do have a question please raise your hand we have microphones we would like to wait until the microphone arrives. I think you very much for your talk. If you believe that. Excited by the news of tt transformationn shington dc. I have to say i was not necessarily a High School Junior in those days but i was a very young child. In those days and 80s and i was waiting for the moment to see the americans smashing the wall. We are grateful that america has done tremendous things for people that love freedom. One question. Do you think there is an element of moral era that is pride in her comments. That made her blind to the reality of the electoral process. And that pride has been detrimental to her did she learn anything from barack obama. As is a great question. I often wonder what shes thinking about. I think that she gerall and i think a good many liberals who think like her due urdu as well. They could explain so much violence and hostility in the streets. In the aftermath of the election. And i think she is anything to regret. I think she double down on what she said. One of the things i appreciate i was reading this on the website. Reagan did not believe that we should be the policeman of the world. To stand alongside people of the world who want to be free. I completely agree with that. What commentary do you have with the situation about the court system and what more may still happen with that. The washington Supreme Court ruled against her so the only option at this point would be if the Supreme Court here in washington takes upper case. That would mean she would have to pay those fines and quite frankly it would be a chilling message to people who had devout religious beliefs and dont want to violate those beliefs. Pay close attention to that story and see what happens. It will have ramifications for every person of faith in america. I have to tell you this because its a very desperate fairly literary looking group here. When i grew up as a kid in the deep south i grew up in a storytelling culture. We are prone to hyperbole but i grew up reading the works of Lewis Grizzard he was a Great Southern humanist. If youre a Junior High School boy and you read it on the school bus you learn to run really fast. I also love to read. Liberal humorous. Two of my favorite did not agree with a lick of what she have to say. She was sort of funny when she wrote about things. We could find something in common you get your carry and conceal us and as you come out in the hospital. The other one is art buchwald. I was always amazed at how he could turn satire on his have with washington. Another question. I confirmed wyoming the Supreme Court hearing for justice and then just last week the fox news reported this. In several months ago she had been asked hypothetical question by a reporter what she would do if asked to perform gay marriage ceremonies. She said that shed never been asked to do so but she have certain relious objectiono doing so that in the future should do something silar to that. Even though shed never been asked to perform marriage the attorneys demanded that she be removed from the bench. This is just another example of a battle that has been lost at the local level. I think conservatives have done pretty good and had one and states. But have we ignored some of the states where we should be winning like wyoming and others. Thats an excellent question you raise. I read about judge neely in my column this week. I love lutherans. They give it good potlucks. You raise an interesting point because there is a local component to this. A lot of folks thinks its a real sexy when you talk up fighting for about fighting for American Values. By that point its too late. Its the thrust of the book. Its all about being active and engaged on the local levels. One of the areas in particular that we talk about in the book is a Public School system. We encourage folks to run for the school board get involved in the local textbook committees. Put it with her to. Why should we be concerned. You are a taxpayer. Your money is pain for the nonsense the Public School. Some people say we have soccer d dance. You have to prioritize in the country its great to have a soccer team. Youve got to prioritize and another thing we really encourage folks to do in the book is to take personal responsibility for teaching your child about american history. There may be some great history teachers out there. Quite friendly some of them are teaching common core and that concerns me greatly. Teacher kids in grandkids about the Founding Fathers. Take that responsibility personally in your home. Thank you for your comments. Im brian riley i work here at the Heritage Foundation. I came all the way from the fifth floor to see you. I was reading a book over the weekend about post civil war and jim crow laws and after the civil war flaxen rights and that was to prevent that. The state governments had to pass jim crow laws stepping in to tell businesses how they can operate and isnt that kind of the same thing. Who they can do business with. That is a form of that. What struck me about the situation in michigan is they are telling a privately owned business is what kind of reading material he can have. Again, i think in the Obama Administration years we saw a gross overreach by the federal government into what is happening in local towns and communities and another part of this it is important for folks to know their rights know their rights under the constitution we dont know how far the government has overreached. Going back to the bare metal stents in case. Do you happen to know at the Supreme Court does take it. If they have to pay the fines as i go to designate a government doesnt go to the couple. Who benefits from this decision if its a bad decision. I dont know what fines have been levied against her. If in fact they found that she have discriminated against the couple they would receive some of that money. Thats what happened in the klein case. It was a very similar situation. They were forced to pay the fines. Heres a challenge for all of us. The clients, their kids got death threats. It was ugly. Just today i will be reading the story about north Carolinas Carolinas former governor, he is unemployed and he cannot get a job because people dont want to hire him because he stood up and said men who identify as women dont need to use the bathroom with the little girls. There is a militant strain here. They want to destroy. With disdain alongside these people. They have to live their lives. I can get pretty scary out there for people tt are taking a stand. They did go looking for a fight. The fight came to them. And as a scary thing because think about it one day they could be knocking on your door so think about that. We had time for a few more questions. Would you comment on the university situation. It seems like theres no end in sight for what we could do the universities are almost in the on top. The micro aggressions. I didnt know such things a graph is existed. We have learned over the example there was a big controversy at the university of missouri and a lot of the alums just stopped giving and that donors just stopped giving. And even though a lot of people dont have an a moral compass on a University Campus they do understand the bank. Young people to be going to schools and they do believe in this great nation. There is a number of christian universities other. Yes i am guilty of sitting back those folks are about to be kicked out into the general population with the rest of us. Any school and university they ought to are taking the federal tax money. One more question back here. Do you think anything can be done about the hecklers veto . Expand just a little bit about what youre talking about my apologies. Fiftyfive people come in a year this week and a nothing announce and you can be heard. That is a sad part about this. The average american liberal is not very polite. And we need to have a little bit of civility in our conversations. They can try to shut you down but im so to keep talking. We have to be willing to stand up to this. The big situation out of berkeley. They vandalized a building named after Martin Luther king junior for goodness sakes. These folks are just bullies. A lot of them watch and be an msnbc. I will ask one final question here. This is often discussed in the context. I am wondering if you can give any guidance in your book or can they contact you and get some material from you about this. Thats can be a very important issue. The problem is when youre teaching islam in our Public Schools they are teaching and extorted view. A book i wrote several years ago. A scholar had that a scholar had done with the Orange County register. Their goal was to infiltrate our Public School system so they could become the academic advisors and textbooks that write about that write the lessons that they will learn about islam. And that man is now one of those advisors. Someone called it a form of stealth jihad is underway. Anything written by Joel Rosenberg he is also a very astute and learned man. Joel has a brandnew as of today at foxnews. Com a new survey regarding how they view islam. There is also another amazing book is just a recently retired as the pastor of the many church in chicago. He has written several books regarding islam. Those are two resources for you to take a look at. Its very important for us understand islam. And also the rise of radical islam across the globe. According to the survey that just came out an overwhelming majority of americans believe that there is can be some sort of an attack on the homeland. Its important to understand what we are facing and what we are dealing with. At the end of every chapter we provide you guys with marching orders. These are practical things that you can do in your home and community to really reclaim those wonderful values. In doing that i do believe that we are to make America Great again for future generations. Understand this. This is something we have to do with every generation. Every generation has a responsibility to move that flame of freedom further. Lets think todd. I want tencourage you to get a copy of his book in for more research on some of the topics that he has discussed be sure to go to heritage. Org. Have a good afternoon. I was a little bit slower and understanding that that time between emancipation and the modern Civil Rights Era is just as central. Youre not sure if its a good thing or a bad thing. Im to share with you a personal in a dope. Prior to my intensive study of this era. At a picture in my head of africanamerican legislators in the halls of Congress Looking like the roots as part of my research is difficult as it was watched the birth of a nation it was a second time i was watching it. I recall that i watched in high school. The whole point and when i watch it the same there was a particular screen shot and there it was. Africanamericans in the legislative chamber one of them there in the background was an enormoushicken leg. That was my picture. That was the a picture in my head. And it shows you how song Popular Culture can be especially visual images and indeed this movie captivated the American Public and put in their heads lots of false images that were not countered by our schooling because of the inaccuracy of our schooling. So to be sure there were 23 africanamerican gentlemen who served in the halls of congress and in the senate. They did so with distinction. So yes reconstruction was a good thing. And it too early. And that was the jim crow era. Africanamericans were abandoned by the federal government. And allowed to be virtually re enslaved by a white supremacist. Sunday night on afterwards. Congressman ken buck of colorado also a member of the Freedom Caucus discusses his book drain the swamp. How corruption is worse than you think. When you arrive in dc. You get very comfortable in that situation. And you dont want to give up those comforts and the weight to continue to earn those comforts is to spend more y into grow government and to not solve problems but to create programs and take credit for those programs whether they are efficient or effective. To take credit for those programs. Many other members of congress are here. It is the best job they have ever had. The highest paid job they have ever had. As it is a job they dont want to give up. Their reelection is more important than the actual problem solving that needs to go on in dc. You guys are doing great. You did great. I would like this sent a special thank you for hosting it.
