[inaudible conversations] how did it go in there . I think we set the stage to carry on further conversations. You know, we only have 15 days, really, to go. Weve got to find a way that we can curb our spending, raise our debt limits and also grow our economy and the president agreed to appoint a couple of people from his administration to sit down and negotiate directly with my team so i found that to be productive, personally, but weve got a lot of work to do in a short amount of time. I wish we would have been able to be in this place 100 days ago, this is what we requested, but we are where we are well try our hardest to make it come to fruition. inaudible . We have the republicans based a bill that limited our spending and taxpayers save money pulling back unspent money and waste and grow our economy by making our economy stronger and helping lift people out of poverty into work. So those are the parameters we talked about. Let me give a moment to have leader mcconnell say a few words. Ill just say what i said this february, the president and the speaker are the keys to the deal. Im prepared to try to deliver as much of my congress as i can, but whatever the speaker and the president can agree to that we know will get a signature on it. Mr. Speaker, the covid money thats a nobrainer. I dont think anybody in america doesnt think if you had billions of dollars sitting out there that you appropriated two years ago, people could not spend and its Hardworking Taxpayers money and the pandemic is over, you cant bring it back. Its the only place in washington that democrats think you shouldnt do that. I think at the end of the day, it will be in the bill. A lot of americans watching this are wondering why its taking so long. I came here in february so we wouldnt be here. And how could we responsibly lift the debt ceiling and spending out of control, 6 trillion that the democrats spent, inflation, how can we grow our economy and make it less dependent on china and work together. For all of those thinking that for 97 days, the president ignored us and said we couldnt meet. It wasnt until the republicans would no longer ignore the problem and actually raise the debt ceiling, pass the bill did we finally get a meeting. Its unfortunate we are where we are, but the good thing about it, the republicans always look to find a solution. Mr. Speaker, you said earlier this week that you were very far apart. Yeah. And if youre apart, and you think by theened of the week, it will be possible . Its possible to get a deal by the end of the week. Its not that difficult to get to an agreement. When you think about limits, grow, the bill we passed, we raised the debt ceiling, we capped future spending, we grow our spending in congress by 1 each year, that gives you trillions of dollars of savings. We bring back money that we have appropriated from the taxpayer that wasnt spent in the pandemic. We put in work requirements that the president voted for as a senator that in wisconsin just a couple of months ago passed by 82 . It lifts people out of poverty, put them into jobs. What that does is helps our supply chain. So, no longer do we borrow money from china to pay people not to work and the only thing were talking about are ablebodied people with no dependents. Thats all youre talking about, its already in place in certain areas. And then we make ourselves more energy independent. We change the red tap that we could actually build things in america. The roads we want to build, the Energy Product we want to build to be energy independent. So it lowers the price to americans, but at the same time creates more jobs and the economy gets stronger. Do you think that inaudible all right. Come back to me when were not talking about the debt ceiling. With this situation still unresolved the president as you know, is about to head overseas for the g7. Look, the president of the united states, he can make decisions whats best how to use it. The president has now what has changed in this meeting the president changed the scope of who is all negotiating. Instead of all the four leaders, its really, hes finally taking leader mcconnells advice that hes applied, the same he gave to President Biden that worked out, the same advice to president obama and others, appoint somebody from the president s team who can work with the Speakers Team to see if we can come to an agreement. Thats what the decision was made in this meeting. So the structure of how we negotiate has improved. So it now gives you a better opportunity, even though we only have a few days to get it done, had we done this back 97 days ago wed already have a bill passed. Why to they keep slamming republicans for touching veterans berths. My understanding the Appropriations Committee rolled out funding 18 billion above. Can you confirm that . And talk whether the white house is negotiating in good faith and when is the next meeting going to be. Great question. For many times the white house and the president would say republicans are going to cut the veterans. We would say that was a lie. Today out of appropriations, it was proven it was a lie. We actually increased spending for our veterans. Its like any other households. You prioritize where you spend your money. The real question is, how much debt is too much . Were at 32 trillion dollars almost. 120 of our gdp. That means its larger than our economy by 20 . This is the equivalent of your child having a credit card and they hit the limit again and again and again. And every year when your child hits the limit all you do is increase the limit. It comes to a point now that you cant afford it. So do you just increase the limit again or you actually take a serious thought where youre spending your money . Youre still going to fund the things most important to you, but youre going to eliminate the waste. Maybe you dont go to starbucks every single day, maybe you dont waste your money. The president just now appointed individuals. We will sit, i would like to meet today, actually and start meeting until we get this done. Do you think that longer than one year how long does it go. Thats up for negotiation. Inside the republican bill, 1. 5 trillion we lifted it. When you think about it, we borrowed 1 trillion this year and think about a what that means to the average american. We are borrowing money,er were borrowing your future for things wasted on for today. More than a trillion dollars. That means that china is funding that, we need to change that behavior and make america stronger, less dependent on china and actually curb inflation. Speaker mccarthy, what is your level of optimism its going to get resolved. If this is where we were in february, when we first came down, i would be optimistic it would be solved. The structure has changed for a better process. Do you want to say anything else . Seven of the last 10, seven of the last 10 debt ceilings have carried something else. What the speaker and i are advocating here is not unusual. Its more common than not. A perfect example of it is is the congressional reviews acts that we have been voting on periodically in congress to overturn what was done on a debt ceiling during the clinton administration. So this shouldnt be this hard. Number one, we know were not going to default. They know it, we know it. Were running out of time. And just finally, the speaker pointed out, the president s agreed to designate somebody to be the lead, as i recommended to trump in 2019, when we faced the same situation. Do you think he wanted to negotiate with Speaker Pelosi . Of course not. I said you have no choice. inaudible go right ahead. Can you talk about can you talk about your discussions during the meeting on the work requirement . Are you just accepting changes now and snap look, im not going to negotiate with you. We know what weve passed the way the founders have developed this country which is an unbelievable country, you lend your voice to your elected official. The house passes a bill, the Senate Passes a bill and then you go to congress, and unfortunately the house is the only body that passed the bill and raised the debt limit. Were 15 days away from hitting that limit. The republicans didnt sit and wait until janet yellen told us when the deadline was. We passed it long before she told us the june 1st. Just as you look at title 42 lifted on the border, we didnt ignore the problem like the white house, we put a border bill out there, so we can secure the border. And what happened, a person on the terrorist watch list was coming, and why . And we caught more on the terror watch list than the last administration. You cant keep ignoring problems, youve got to find solutions. Yes, maam. Why do you tell look at you now in concern about possible default and the implications in the Global Economy . Look, i think americas the number one economy in the world and when we get done with this negotiations, americas economy is going to be stronger because were going to make the American Economy stronger, putting them back to work,
