Abel lopez associate producing director of the hispanic theater, the latino hispanic theater is located here in washington, d. C. And is a longtime guarantee of the National Government for the arts. This was the first theater in the Nations Capital to offer spanishlanguage production. I also want to introduce the director of the institute of washington, another longtime guarantee of the National Endowment for the arts and in addition to regular dance classes and professional performances, Dance Institute offers an awardwinning Mentorship Program called positive directions and the positive direction prepares High School Students for college or employment by offering dance classes, Life Skills Development and educational services. They have been affected by postherpetic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury and other invisible conditions from the war. The National Endowment for the artform that Healing Arts Partnership with walter reed in 2011 which pairs melissa with the veteran ron capps and music therapist rebecca and together these three the visual creative therapy are creating new possibilities for the members of the military through the arts. Thank you for the work you do every day to empower and inspire people through the arts. [applause] in many ways 1965 was a time of optimism and of hope and awakening. The Voting Rights act has been signed just a month before the National Endowment for the arts was established in america completed its First Successful space walk earlier that summer and after three attempts the marchers from selma alabama successfully reached the Capitol Steps in montgomery and it was a turbulent time to be sure but it was also one we could begin to dream of new freedoms and frontiers and it was in this climate new aspirations for the American People the National Endowment for the arts and the National Endowment for the humanities were created on september 291965 so the idea was to form an agency that would nurture and elevate the nations culture for the advancement of american civilization. Unlike the previous new deal the Works ProgressAdministration Program either the National Endowment for the arts or the National Madonna for the humanities were formed for economic reasons that were always considered it to be about something bigger. President Lyndon Johnson signed the National Foundation on the arts and humanities act which gave birth to the nea and the nadh and the purpose is to nurture american creativity, elevate the nations culture and sustain and preserve the countrys artistic tradition throughout the nation from dense neighborhoods of cities large and small to the vast spaces for all americans to experience the arts. It was written that the world leadership which has come to the United States cannot rest solely as the superior technology. Americas commitment to wild dreams and pursuing innovation and finding the passion that ignites the spirits. In order to be an effective leader with might and strength you also have to have heart and soul. For the past 50 something years thats exactly what the National Endowment for the arts have been doing from double theater to the American Film Institute and from prairie home companion and the Sundance Film Festival live from Lincoln Center to more than 400 translations of literature from 86 other countries and 66 language and grants to attract students and teachers in initiatives to deliver programs to the communities across the nation for the programs of the military installation to featuring the masters of jazz and folk and traditional arts in schools and concert halls and radio and tv to the initiative that brought the arts to those with hearing challenges. Thousands of artists and Arts Organizations of all genres have received National Endowment for the arts during the formative years and over the past five decades the National Endowment for the arts made more than 147,000 grams totaling 5 billion with a significant ability to leverage the dollars so for every dollar a word of the National Madonna for the arts in additional seven to 9. The anniversary of the opportunity to celebrate these ones emerging artists. When it comes to the arts there is art there is no such thing and the marginalized population we are committed to ensuring that every individual from child to grandparent and from the tenth generation to the newly arrived immigrant to live in the a community where creativity can thrive. Why is this important . Because the arts and still our lives without leave and connection and creativity and innovation and they make our world a more rewarding place to live. For instance, the hispanic theater is a major cultural touchstone for washington Hispanic Community and through the power of performance it gives people an opportunity to celebrate who they are and where they are from and for others its a way to connect with the cultures of the traditions and art forms of their neighbors and see to see how our differences are a cause for celebration. He explained in dance you are taught to carry yourself in a way ourselves in a way that lets you know you take pride in resolve that is the power of the arts. There is a similar sense of empowerment at walter reed one Service Member explained how the process of arts therapy worked. He said we are trapped in our own heads and the dreams and nightmares and flashbacks that once we get down to the music and art that we can control and do what we want to and we can change it and take it anywhere we want to whenever we want to. Many people have reached out to us with stories about the arts in their own lives they face mental and physical challenges. Soon, will you please stand . Shes told us the story of marvin that first arrived at the kitchen six years ago and regularly ate meals at the shelter but was frequently uncommunicative and staff numbers found it difficult to find a way to reach them. Art therapy turned out to be the game changer. And to bring himself up for talking to begin with the sacred circles and out of jewelry making. And in may of 2014 he slept in his own bed for the first time in six years and together we are helping marvin maintain his home and thrive in his new life. Thank you for sharing the story of marvins ability to express himself through the arts. [applause] from conway North Carolina who let us know about the experience crawling with her grandchild she wrote in that precious time we got lost in our imagination talking about colors and shapes and shadows it was absolute heaven. It was a time of feeling and joy that i doubt either of us will be likely to ever forget and Maria Amendola wrote to tell us her story and here is what she said. I have the privilege of attending and graduating from booker t. Washington high school for the performing and visual arts in dallas texas and to discover my capabilities there was a constant push to be anything but ordinary. Damn has inspired me to find different ways of tackling and handling issues. The stories are testament to the cover of the arts to change lives and while they are celebrating the work of the arts and National Endowment over the past 50 years we also begin to ask ourselves how we can best multiply these transformative art experiences over the next 50 years. How can we better understand and expand of the way that the arts infused our country and how is the infrastructure changing and how can the National Endowment for the arts and other creative entities change with it to better support the ideas and initiatives and the dream of American People . So to explore these questions, we are announcing the launch of a new initiative today called creativity connects via creativity connects will build the relationships between the arts and the general public as well as between the arts and the Different Industries outside of the arts and we have three main objectives with this initiative. One object of this to show how the arts are central to the countrys creativity ecosystems and number two it will investigate how support systems for the arts are changing and that will explore how they connect with other industries that want and use creativity. We are in the midst of planning tables around the country that will draw people in with the backgrounds of the art, science, business engineering, you name it and during these conversations we will discuss where they will find creativity in their personal lives and career and what kind of benefits it brings to the table and identify any gaps that can be strengthened to connect their fields but want creativity so using information and input from experts across Different Industries we will produce a summary report on the state of the arts today into the report will give an overview of changing artistic practices and of the key pieces that arent providers needed to produce the very best work. And through this, we hope that new programs and partnerships will emerge info fortify the states to meet the spaces and skills in the Capital Markets and networks artists need to thrive and this will help to inform the next phase of creativity connects, building a Digital Interactive systems map. This is a map that will help the public visualize what type of projects are happening in the area of creativity in the 21st century and who is supporting it and with existing resources are available to strengthen the arts sector. We will introduce this to the initiatives over the next weeks and months to support innovative projects between the Nonprofits Organization and be Arts Organization that wants the creativity that the arts can provide. We have the opportunity to build the bridges between the field and expand the support base for the arts and demonstrate to other fields working with the arts and culture sector. It ensures that we are not only nurturing the conditions that will allow the creativity to thrive today but for the next 50 years as well. This is a Forward Focus and provide the impetus for two other new initiatives both of which will support the bright mind and emerging talent of tomorrow. We are excited to announce a partnership with playbill and the Disney Theatrical group to pilot his own writing program that will advise High School Students to to composed of unix and compose the leader accident is at the base on and the songwriting challenge will officially launch in 2016 and initially be limited to the cities in the office. We are also encouraging the talent and creativity of our young people by adding a new element to the annual poetry Athletic Competition which is also for High School Students which is called poetry ourselves. In addition to reciting the published poems which are written by other poets. They will submit the work of their own poetry. And it will be from the national finals. They will imagine the parks program. They will support the arts that take place in or were inspired by the National Parks and it will expand the way that we think about the art in relation to the natural world. So those are the plans for the 50th anniversary initiatives but now lets talk up the celebratory events coming down the line. Is it tomorrow september 29 we will host a moderated panel of the chairs including frank, jane alexander, bill ivey and me and the panel will be moderated by cbs news hour killing her and managing editor Judy Woodruff and the festivities continue october 14 when the taping of in performance at the white house will honor the joint 50th anniversary of the National Endowment for the arts and for the humanities. This separation concert which will be called a celebration of american creativity will feature performances by a number of american musicians and there will be later broadcast on pbs on january 8, 2016. We will be participating in an Anniversary Event for the National Endowment of the humanities at the library in austin texas to honor the president whose signature brought our agencies into existence and an addition to my travel for the creativity connects roundtable i will continue to visit communities throughout the country meeting with local Community Leaders come Arts Organizations, artists, federal policymakers to see how the arts are making a difference in the places they call home and this will be part of my efforts to continue the conversation about the importance of the arts in our lives and to close the anniversary celebration we will host a National Convening in conjunction to the Kennedy Center in october 2016. Our focus will be on the future of the arts in america and this will bring together artists, thinkers, policymakers as we continue the dialogue dialog of how to strengthen the arts sector for the next 50 years and explore how the arts are a critical component to imagining and developing and securing our future. Throughout the coming year we will also be posting the new multimedia content on the website. In partnership with the wonderful state arts agencies and regional Arts Organization this content will include working 60 videos highlighting the role the arts play in every state and how those grants have made an impact on the American Culture as a whole. You can browse through the selection of the story bank by visiting the website where you can find stories and we hope that with each event that we host and every initiative that we launch we are moving closer to having all of us understand that the arts and the National National income government for the arts have touched their lives and their communities. They will build relationships. As we made the case for why the arts matter have been joined by the voices of the arts advocates and patrons and leaders and musicians and playwrights and painters are teachers, designers, mayors of communities large and small. Everybody watching will join in the chorus. Its time to move away from the notion that the arts are a separate policy and that some people can participate in the arts and others cannot be contributed 12. 1 billion in one year. They arent a total of the 1. 1 billion in compensation all in a single year so the on nonprofits sector alone has a formidable transit and when we see that the way people are participating in the arts have expanded, we can celebrate that americans recognize the value and the meaning that the arts bring to our everyday lives. Its a sector that is robust and textured and there is some type of art for everyone and the landscape can accommodate these attitudes and behaviors of america better than it ever has before because america is recognized throughout the world as a place where the size of your dream is limited only by your imagination and creativity can inspire new things that at some point in time may have seemed impossible and where selfexpression five without destruction. This is what has allowed the Cultural Landscape to flourish and become so blooming and vibrant. The National Endowment for the arts is here to nourish those dreams and big creativity and expression. It has been a remarkable 50 years and we are looking forward to an equally to market the future. Thank you. [applause] thank you so much i have Great Questions people have written down. If they want to connect with americans across the country, how will you partner with the giants like facebook for google, twitter etc. And creativity we have seen there are so many areas including technology as youve mentioned in this question its burgeoning. So we limit ourselves any time that we think that creativity only happens in one place. Its seeing how all of this is burgeoning and ultimately connecting one to the other with the creativity connects initiative. We wont be ignoring all of the areas of creativity thats happening including technology. Tell us that the initiative what the initiative in remarks regarding the veterans in the arts. We would love to continue to expand the work with the military servicemembers and thank you melissa. We have seen so much of a transformation and ability to support the military service at walter reed for belvoir and now we want to expand coming into the idea is can we get into all of the communities especially when our servicemembers from altar read and port delves far. We know the powerful transformation of the arts and we want our servicemembers and veterans to be able to have that, too mac. In a specific way how can the arts be used in healing within healthcare . How can they support people that have memory loss and chronic illnesses and how also can they support their caregivers . The arts are a wonderful tool to be able to support those in the aging process that would only just be me and not you but im teasing because we are all aging. They are central to that and we have to center for creative aging thriving in that area. And those with dementia that render and express themselves in a different way than the linear use of everyday words to the arts are critical and to the Human Development the health and wellbeing and the programs are starting to really burgeoning out there. The more programs we can support in that area through poetry and writing and dancing and singing they are all attached to the creative processing we will soon find that is one of the best avenues for expression. The opportunities of the demographic shift towards longer and healthier lives. Is there any specific outreach . Similarly to the creative aging type, we are starting to think i just visited a place in california where there is a Senior Center where arts are thriving and its at the heart of all they do now to express themselves so as we all age. What is is the spirit and imagination that helps us thrive way beyond the linear everyday activities. In the question and notes about the arts being the great equalizer. How can the nations art museum speed more accessible. Whats great about this is that those arent producers and artists and the art administrators and programs are starting to think of creative ways to make sure they are reaching and becoming relevant to the community. Ive seen some programs out there that are equalizers for those who have english as their second language or not as the first language because there are other ways to express themselves and its putting everybody on an equal Playing Field. Museums are starting to burgeoning also in that area. You face the issue with congress over the nea budget due to the cultural war of the 1990s. We met actively with congress and i want to thank also the arts advocates and the patrons and all of you that continue to communicate and educate whats out there because the main message we want to get out to congress and absolutely everybody is that the arts are not in the corner and they are not a frail they infuse our lives in so many different ways and we want to make sure we have this mindset as opposed to either or. So if you win that means i lose. When what we are trying to get across is the message of both. You can have different perspectives and they come together and the arts are great at that. I will tell one quick story and then answer the question about the members of congress. I was born in oklahoma as i mentioned i grew up in arkansas survival is struggled and navigated through this setup. You cannot force it to them to be exactly alike but has been my whole life and ive come to very much appreciate how to do that come out of appreciate the ambiguity of that without forcing everybody to be exactly alike. The arts are one of the best ways to honor the different perspectives and different ways people think and if we continue to send up that message. Getting to talk with many of them they have actually been very receptive and very much appreciated the conversations and at this point, we are most appreciative that the budget is Holding Steady habits stabilized when many parts of allocations have shrunk the budget theres been no amendments to cut it so we believe that is a moving away from trends from the yesteryear. They are tied to health care and Human Development and servicemembers and they are tied to the Arts Education and tied to equalizing the Playing Field and honoring the different perspectives that we are all born into or come with or meet every day. That is one of the best ways to connect and we have been very appreciative and complex budget conditions that the arts have been stable and the nea has been stable. How Many Organizations would disappear without funding help, any idea how many are entirely dependent i would have to get you i couldnt even guess on that but we are so appreciative because the network that the National Endowment for the arts has a been work in tandem with the state arts agencies we have local arts agencies and a local network of the Service Organizations as well so altogether if you look at this network that we built together they are thriving. They are not off by themselves and they are not so solo players. We are honoring the different ways that we work and on the other hand we are partners together so if you ask the question on how many would go away, it would be a really complex we have such a strong tapestry of the network in the field that it would be hard to answer. I have a couple questions and they are related so one is will the nea ever consider funding individual artists again and president obamas platform one of the proposals is to create a modernday program called artist core. Isnt there a way for the government to do more to support the artists. There were grants in the National Endowment for the arts to individual artists and that was removed in the cultural war. There is still no connection between individual artists and jobs. First of all the National Endowment for the arts does fund individual writers so into literature area that is still fellowships and translation writing and we also provide and honor individual jazz masters as well as the traditional arts and metals but the way individual artists are supported through the National Endowment for the arts is through the nonprofit organizations that have programs that bring in individual artists and we can do the chapter and verse on specific ones. Then when you start looking at how many jobs in the Nonprofit Sector through the arts and the National Endowment of the arts funding with the organization its already formidable in its own way so if it isnt just the wpa providing jobs through the national and honor for the arts support. In the k12 education higher specific to the significance of the Creative Arts and American Life and what can they do to counter this trend . We are aware of the cuts and Arts Education in the schools and it is more than just a frail as we have seen first hand when i visited in california in a lowincome neighborhood with very few opportunities he was here was in Elementary School that had an arts program they had a curriculum that infused science and the teaching of math and the teachers had it was a thirdgrade class when i used the arts curriculum for the science test the test not in the arts with signs skyrocketed and regrettably i tried to pull the curriculum a way for one lesson away for one lesson in the standardized test went down. Its not only in the arts themselves but connected like a creativity can act in initiative. We know that the art has an overlay on other subjects that can add a dimension to the quality of our lives, high your academic performance strongly associated feeling its able to express themselves read when you come to the Arts Education we want to first get up a a message you were cutting their dimension to so many other things that make our lives richer and students ability to perform academically and socially and other aspects as well but the National Endowment for the arts while theyve always supported programs that continue to do so now we are supporting far larger grants upwards in the 150,000 area and can be multiple years renewed for the collective impact that connects schools with Community Organizations that are out there doing their jobs as well. So just as we talked about the network before that is what we are going in with to see if we can start stabilizing that. We are very concerned. This questioner asks what are the chances that the nea can work with the department of education. The quester notes that the department of education seems focused on the datadriven outcomes for Student Success. What can be due to hope that can they do to help the can be due to hope that a prophetic tradition redefined Student Success to include joy, creativity and other things the arts brings . Including the department of education we have active partnerships between 30 to 35 other federal agencies, so as the great illustration look what the Dance Institute has done and into rooms of its ability to help students through dance, High School Students graduate. Many of them attend college and get jobs. Actually 100 of them graduate so when you see examples like this working in tandem with other federal agencies such as the department of education we want to keep those conversations so we are not off in site lows but we are working together. I know we meet quarterly and begin to share stories about what youre doing because they do see the value of the arts and there was so much connection we were able to say we need to be doing some of this together. This questioner notes that as we are here at the National Press club what would what you say about the state of the Arts Coverage in this country and is a pretty on target and is there room for significant improvement . The one thing that ive seen as traveling the arts are thriving. There are so many great things happening it can be more robust. There are nuances within every community that mean something to one community that may mean Something Different than another so the arts can customize and be transformed that way. So that one place that we can deepen or abroad and is the ability to communicate that this is happening. So yes it can be significantly increased in the ability to communicate. They are thriving and it means something to all of us as they provide that value and meaning. We need to get that message out even more. A couple questions about washington. How have you found running the Arts Organization different versus kansas city and how has washington and pressed you as a Cultural Center . I love washington and there are some wonderful dc arts providers and theres something for everyone in this microcosm of the of a city so its been great. In some ways running the Performance Arts center for the performing arts in kansas city has been similar to washington in and that its still that mindset of bok choy and corn dogs and that mindset of the Conference Center for the performing arts pulling people together that one of the arts for Different Reasons but didnt always have the same perspective into the drywall or is because i oversaw the construction of the Kauffman Center. We were talking with the drywall or is and they dont talk the same way. Now we are in washington and we have the opportunity to honor the different ways and perspectives sometimes they are opposing to each other without forcing everybody to be a mike slides see more similarities may be more dense in population. How has being an artist affected how you lead the nea ex its been central to my leadership style to have been involved in the arts. My original training was in music and i just lived for it and i intend attended every music camp i could. I majored in music in college and one of the ways that it affected my leadership style is that its a big deal for me to think about Emotional Intelligence. What we do is important. So my training in the arts and in particular music has been at the central part of that because if you are playing the piano and you are playing beethoven they dont sound the same. But it is as a performer i would have to make sure that i was representing the style of that composer. When you are a leading organization everybody you talk to is and always beethoven or procopius and you cant force someone. You have to understand where they are coming from because you cant lead anything if you dont have any followers so being able to connect with them and have them feel like theyve been hurt as the first step and paying attention to the different nuances came from my training in the music. Is the aging of the audience for Classical Music and opera a threat to those . I dont think it is because the way that it is looking at how america participates in the art is expanding so it would be like looking at a garden of flowers and if you only look at one set of flowers and said they are okay but they are not thriving and then you just said look the whole garden isnt thriving that is and how we look. That that isnt the analogy. The way that people participate are expanding and we see three quarters of all americans thats about 167 million participate in the arts first through technology. They create videos they might participate the view so because we are seeing there is a transition in the way people participate, we cannot say that people are not participating in the art and we must broaden our view so in addition to the traditional ways weve measured, we want to find ways to make sure that they are right on the edge and the cusp of being relevant as well as honoring the traditional way as well. So we can do it either this or that and they are going to continue to thrive. What impact does the global art market have on the selections with regard to contemporary art . We have a cool process. First of all two thoughts. One is that it used to be the different types of art forms it used to be that they were off in different categories, so music was over here and videos were over there and the dancing was over there but now we are seeing because the world has become so global that even the art forms are starting to do this giant mash up so there are pieces that used to be that maybe the video would accompany the wonderful music of an orchestra but now we see that there are pieces created where the video into the orchestra together are the peace and you cant extract the two without losing the entire piece. They review the proposals pursed and its a wonderful way to make sure that we are shaping the arts in america together with the different types of contemporary art and also other styles people are with it when they are reviewing this proposal that is the way that america reviews the proposals. Spec this questioner says there are some that think the film as an art form is on the decline. What do you think about the film of the arts state of its . We are seeing that if you only look at one way of participating even in film but weve done a disservice to the film or any art form. Hundreds of thousands of people are coming in for the week to the city thats not only burgeoning tourism as a result and hotel and lodging of new films in the development of the films are thriving because they have this massive audience for a week or a month or summer. Thats been the way people are participating so lets make sure that we have expanded our ways on how people participate in the arts and make sure we are looking at that, too. What kind of responsibility do responsibility do you see the arts managers of tomorrow needing to be focused on, what would your advice be to the future arts managers . One of the things im seeing as a trend nationally is that it used to be that an arts leader or manager was highlighted for their good ability to lead if they were very informed and a specialist in a certain area like they really know their stuff but nowadays, it seems like the leaders of tomorrow and today, too are the ones that know how to synthesize different pieces that come in altogether kind of like that giant mash up again because the world is becoming more global and those that can stand in the middle of the ambiguity and listen to beethoven and haydn and those who understand the nuances of the different ways people are coming and not force fitting that really have that Emotional Intelligence level of combining all of it together those that can synthesize. But thats the future leaders and those who can bring pieces together that dont seemingly fit or dont look like they are fitting but can honor the different ways and bring them together those are the future skills of the leaders of tomorrow. Stomach in the past thereve been calls for the president to create a secretary for the arts as a cabinet level position. Are there any ideas such as this under discussion or any restructuring of the arts and the federal government should have been . That would be fun. We havent had any conversations about creating at the secretary position in the cabinet at this point we are very appreciative in terms of the complexity right now of holding stable. But what i thats what i like about that [laughter] what i like about that is that it elevates the recognition of how important the arts are. Even when we are aware of it or not aware of it so that is one demonstration of other people recognizing it, something that we want to get the message across as the arts belong to everyone. We are almost out of time. Before i get to the last question or two. The National Press club is the worlds leading professional organization for journalists and we fight for the free press worldwide. To learn more about the National Press club, go to the website at press. Org and to donate to the Journalism Institute, visit press. Org institute. I would like to remind you of upcoming speakers and payroll this week. Secretary arnie dungan will address the National Press club luncheon. Thursday october 1 at the National Press club welcomes latvia president for a luncheon address and on friday october 2, the utah governor will address the luncheon. I would now like to present the guest with the most honorary heirloom the National Press club mug. [applause] in the time remaining, i want to ask you a couple of questions about the big picture. President kennedy said that the nation will be judged not by its politics or war but by its contribution to the human spirit how is the United States doing . I tend to think in terms of what we can be. So it really is back to the United States writing and winning when we can imagine and when we can dream with our own creativity on what we can be. So i think that when president kennedy made those comments, thats back to the this. But we dont ever want to lose and we dont want anybody to take it away from us either. Lets continue to spark the spirit thats within us. It sounds like a commercial that they are great at doing that and lets give ourselves permission to make sure we can honor that because that is when america is at its finest. And finally on the eve of the National Endowment of the arts 50th anniversary, what do you see for the next 50 years . What would you like to see them celebrating at its 100th anniversary or since your future successor will be celebrating that from hundreds right here at the National Press club . What would you anticipate they would be talking about in the organization 50 years from now . I would anticipate they would be talking about but we wouldnt even be having a conversation about explaining that the arts are a frail or not frail, they are not often a corner by themselves because everybody would get it. It would become like many of our tribal partners and families who do not have the word arts endeavor to be a very because they are so infused in all they do. Its part of their lives and they dont know it any other way. So in the next 50 years the chairman of the National Endowment for the arts will be thinking thinking and celebrating all of the new types of activities that the arts are tied to in our everyday lives, things we cant even think about the Technology Development and things like that and we will still be honoring all of the ways that we have traditionally. It will be burgeoning. How about a round of applause for the speaker tax [applause] i would also like to think the National Press club staff including its Journalism Institute and Broadcast Center for organizing todays event and if you would like a copy of todays program or to learn more about the press club, go to the website press. Org. Thank you. And we are adjourned. [applause] [inaudible conversations]
