Missis were gathered to kick off the third annual mississippi book festival. [applause] this book festival highlights two of the best things mississippi does. Our authors, and our readers. M associate we will unveil the new literary map. We have lots of authors to celebrate. More than 220 will be on hand today to engage the readers. And we hope, sell a lot of re books. We are grateful that cspan is here to broadcaster panels we are honored to have the library of Congress Join us in thes in celebration. [c [applause] [applause] immediately after the opening, the congressman, thank you for coming, he will join doctor hayden and engage in this room and a great conversation about reading books in the library of congress. D the capi this great room that we are in, those Supreme Court chambers has been nicknamed the cspan room around the capital. Also the senates main committei room. We know our manners a mississippi. We would not be in this room without the graciousness of the lieutenant governor, tape great. [applause] thank you. What a privilege it is pressed to be here in the mississippi capital today. Particularly in the Supreme Court chambers. It does host about the Senate Appropriations committee and the Senate Finance committee during the legislative session. Want to welcome everyone to the mississippi book festival. Her status blessed with prolifio writers who often tell mississippi story. The festivals our chance to show off those talents. The world of literature would be lacking if we never knew my sister lived at the post office or how meaningful a relationship between a boy and his dog could be. But countless writers who captured not only the mississippi experience on paper, but documented that human condition for the world to read. While we celebrate our success story, the festival shines a light on the next generation mississippi writers, like angie thomas who still at number one on the New York Times bestseller list. [applause] seen Young Authors achieve such success shows our young people they can also reach their dreams. Its also of the way unique opportunity for my family to be involved. My wife and fifthgrader 5yearold have the opportunity to introduce a group of a thousand Young Students from jackson public school. I will tell you she had just read one of megs books for her fifth grade reading and when she asked if she could get her book signed her mom told her yes you can but you can get a new book is were given out books and she said no, i want her to sign the book i actually read. As want to welcome doctor hayden from our state and capital. On this visit youll see many outstanding examples of mississippis literary culture. I want to thank holly and her entire team for organizing a festival that we can all be proud of. Three years ago when we invited governor to welcome everyone on the steps of the capital he was a little busy because it was a burst of his grandson. He selling his third birthday today and hell always celebrate his birthday with the book festival. The governor has ours been a supporter of the festival from even when it was a little bitty idea. He has encourage the support of the state agencies to help us to it we do. We could not do without governor brian and the state agencies that help produce this in partd by these lovelyhe facilities. [applause] we a morning. Welcome to the third annual mississippi book festival and henrys third birthday celebration. He has been read two senses first day. As a matter fact, i was looking at studies this morning that said you can start reading to your child before they are born, at the 24th week. At least doctor us is that. So we must believe that is true. We are storytellers a mississippi. Some of us better than others. I was born in the mississippi delta and Sunflower County in morehead mississippi. So Willie Morris was a icon. Librall Little Library in that town in the door that open the entire world. Is about all we had with black and White Television in the library that you could see the world. You could begin reading and a dyslexic child it was a struggle at first. My father gave me an additional of sir author, and the greatest adventures of sherlock holmes. I still have that book i was about 12. And he said let me know when you get through reading this. If you havent seen it in a while, try it. It was a challenge. Those pages are still grade and turned and dogeared as i remembered the years of living vicariously through the great author, sherlock holmes. Course, mississippi has a few as were talking early on i remember as a young man at jackson seen rap dining at the mayflower some of the local restaurants in part of the jackson community. Trying to make sure we did not interrupt her lunch. But in all this great literature giant has set just across the room. Ive been to William Faulkners home growing up. We could have a good time in oxford but oh could he write. Greg and all of those new that were here, john gershon and the list goes on. Ebrate so we celebrate the fact that we have great writers that just important to me that we have great readers. When i came into office 48 of thirdgraders were reading at a thirdgrade level. Started a new literacy program, education works, six years lat later, 92 those thirdgraders early reading at a thirdgrade level. [applause] so, well keep trying. There is no way to stop made th greatness. I just made that without. But i think you keep it. Theres no way to stop greatness. The greatness of mississippi in the those that will write the greatness today is with us in a lady that has led the library of congress now the 14th library of congress. We just met and became quick friends. She had the sun as we started exchanging ideas and love stories, i wanted her to know the flavor of feeling of mississippi. I. Ie and i believe that she has. She was sworn in in september 2016, vibrating congress, the first woman the first africanamerican to lead the national library. [applause] [applause] coming from the state of family of strong women, that does not surprise me at all. R soon i wouldve expected that to take place were sooner than now. The latest, she served it 1993 as ceo of the library in baltimore, maryland. She was chief librarian of Chicago Public libraries from 9. Can only imagine the responsibility of that. Ninetyfive she was the first she reserved the library and year word recognition of Outreach Service at the pratt library. She received her ba from Roosevelt University in ma and phd from a graduate library school, please welcome, my friend and librarian of congress, doctor carla hayden. [applause] [applause] i thank you so much. I must tell you, ive had the warmest welcome in mississippi. My mom is tuned in right now to cspan. We talked last night about getting the right channel and doing it all like that. So, she is thinking enough for that welcome welcome. And all of you. Im telling you, going to miss weltys house last night, i wanted to just stay there. The books were everywhere. And i talked to one of the guides who said that people would walk down the street and see her in the window and theysh knew that she was there and that she was writing. N to wri she always came back home to jackson to write. And that is where she got her inspiration. I was able to also visit yesterday and congratulations io have to say on the third book festival in the state of mississippi. Miceli, i dont know if you. Know, miceli was instrumental in working with first lady, laura bush with the first texas book festival, she got it going. Then, she said im coming back home to mississippi to start work on the mississippi book festival. So thank you. [applause] and they did. They asked the governor to have it at the state capital. So holly thank you for opening r up the state capital to have authors and readers all over this building. In fact, in room two oh four theres can be a mississippi marathon read. All day authors will be reading other mississippi authors works. We know theres a lot of aspiring writers here. How to write the next great mississippi novel. You can pick your genre, mistry, scifi, fiction, and in the indian mound, the coast pick a hero, elvis, oprah, cool papa bell, bb king, mix it with the subject, catfish, cotton, magnolias, tamales and couple, conflict, legal problems, starcrossed lovers silver or Natural Disaster and then the resolution, everyone dies. There is defeated, love conquers all, someone goes to jail, and the readers left hanging. [laughter] and if you havent had enough and mississippi is truly literary lovers haven, you can meet with the Mississippi LibraryCommission Network of libraries throughout the state. I had a chance to meet with the librarians yesterday. They have something special. If you need recommendations anyone to find out an remark about it, please be part of the Mississippi Library and the libraries throughout the state. And also, let me just say that the library of congress is your partner. The National Book festival will take place and mrs. Bush started that in washington on september 2.
