Not once which i would argue did not serve her well. [laughter] [applause] thats my Makeup Artist clapping. She is on my side. Anyway, so thats the best part. The worst part, you know, i would say the worst part has been the security threats. As much as i try to avoid some of that online vitriol, i get lots of it and i hate it. I find that such a soul killing spirit the course of this year you went from being somebody who reports on the news to becoming the focus of the news. And it happened after you asked the question of the first Republican Debate come to donald trump about how he is talked about women in the past. What happened at the asked that question . Lets back up. What happened before he asked that question because its an extraordinary day that you had leading into it. Thats one of the things i would deal in the book is the prequel to that question. There was one, you know. Trump and i always had a Good Relationship prior to that debate. We werent friends but we were friendly. Then i did a segment of the week before the debate on the kelly file about his divorce from ivanka trump if it wasnt my story. Was a story that daily beast had broken about his divorce 30 years ago on which she and sworn deposition testimony testified that he raped her. He was extremely brutal, according to her testimony, extremely nasty and very detailed. The daily beast dredge the story back up against trump had come out in his announcement speech and said mexicans are sending rapists, at the daily beast point was speaking of rape, right . Thats why they went there. My point having a daily beast report on the kelly file was to kill the other side of the store and to challenge the report of it and say look, she recanted that testimony. She does not stand by it. It was 30 years ago. It was a contentious divorce proceeding in which people notoriously lie. So how did you account for that reality in your reporting . Which i felt was not quite skeptical enough of those allegations. I thought it was very fair to trump because we are not the ones dredging up his divorce. Someone else wants wasnt just the daily beast. I put the guy on, i challenged him, it was fine. Donald trump was not happy. He was not happy i put the story on. He wasnt happy we gave it any airtime at all. He insisted i call him that monday before the thursday president ial debate, the august 6, first foxnews debate was a thursday night and youre supposed to come on the kelly file that monday. He wouldnt unless i called them first. So i called him and it did not go well. He said you never showed up at the store on your show. I said look, did your favorite. You should be thanking you everybody was talking about that story without reporting she recanted. You never shouldve put that. Bill oreilly didnt put that on his show. I said bill oreilly is not my editorial gauge. He said i never want to see that kind of story under show again. I said, mr. Trump, you dont control the editorial on the kelly file. And that is when he blew. And started screaming at me. You are a disgrace. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You are a disgrace. I almost unleashed my beautiful twitter account against you, and i still may. [laughter] spirit that was the first bowling unit had since seventh grade . I dont know if i would classify that as bullying so much as just an angry politician, which im used to. The threat of a twitter account was clear. At this point i have that woman question drafted. I know im asking him. This is been drafted for weeks. The opening round which is electric and hardhearted questioning, that had been in the bag for weeks. Hard, hard. Im in a position where i know hes angry. He feels antagonized. He wasnt antagonized but he feels antagonized, and he spent those four days sniffing around the fox News Executives to try to feel me out a bit, like what i going to do about her . Whats going to happen with the . Nobody ever told me thered tried to give me told from the debate but it was clear he was focus on me. Extraordinarily focused on me. At the time i thought to myself this would be the biggest news story in the country people knew it threatened to unleash his beautiful twitter account on me and is called every fox executive in the belly prior to the first president ial debate, but i was not at liberty. That was not a conversation that he had given me permission at the time to reveal, nor did he think it was appropriate. It was something where i did want to scrub the foxnews debate. Even then i had a sense he might not show as he got angrier. I did not want that. And then we had that first debate and i would say the rest is history. [laughter] you asked the question, was there bullying that followed . Was there and onslaught of attacks against you that that question prompted no that just from mr. Trump but from his useful twitter account. You are really put under a lot of pressure. They were vicious speed i would say there was an attempt bullying. If you look at the definition of bullying in the dictionary it talks about obtaining a desired effect. He didnt shut you up spirit he did not obtain the desired effect. But it is a credit to my at the kelly file that he did it. Because it was hard to hold the line night after night after night, and not cover him too harshly because i was being, my life was being threatened, and not cover him to gently because i wanted him to stop the nonsense, or to please him. I made a promise to the audience after he really came after me in august that i will continue to cover him without fear or favor, which is a line from the New York Times about 100 years ago, but it still works as a journalistic principle. I had a team of people that helped me do that, and it was hard because the point i try to make to donald trump and that may interview we had, and the point of what others to know right now in one of the reason why i included all this in about is that when donald trump comes after you, it isnt just a tweet. Its like hes really tweeting about her. I understand hes a fighter and it really is a fighter and hes a counter punch her. I get that, and even then guesst such power that a single tweet could unleash hell in somebodys life. And im not even a civilian, right . I a journalist. I would say he put me on the Playing Field when i belong on the sidelines. We cant have a President Trump polling people right out of the stands and doing this to them because they criticize him. Because most people dont work for a company that makes a billion dollars a year. And can hire roundtheclock security for somebody like me, and really i been under armed guard for 60 months. My children have been under armed guard. Its not an appropriate price to pay for hardhitting journalism. [applause] you can watch this and other programs online at booktv. Org.
