Language matters. Many people will not say that they are trump supporters. A statement, which they reflect on their own belief dissociation, but they say they will vote for trump. Trumps success is associated with appearing genuine and passionately concerned with the direction of america. They believe he says what he thinks, which should they agree sometimes gets into trouble, but for the most part they admire it they contrast this with clinton who they believe will say anything to get elected if the looking to only benefit herself and frankly, is a liar. They want America First and believe that members of both parties have enacted policies and traded deals that have heard a lot of american people. Specifically working class people. They say he has gotten them interested and involved in this election and can in many cases can repeat for read them many of his comments in general policies to they tend to hold parties and disdain and say trump is somewhat conservative and or moderates or that he cant be characterized at all, which a lot of people like. And is a threat to establishment politicians feared he will hold people accountable to get things done. [applause]. Then, if you and our focus group found that they would vote republican matter who the candidate was, but the majority that he was the best candidate at this point even those who originally backed another republican in the primaries. Their strongest concern across the board, this goes with both the supporters and undecided, our jobs as congresswoman blackburn noted. Infrastructure, bringing jobs back, good paying jobs and so forth. Lowering taxes, Immigration Reform and safety including terrorism here and internationally, less regulation , healthcare costs, strong military, government accountability. Notes did not mention government debt, family values, smaller government, entitlement reforms, trickledown economics, the things typically focus on by many republicans. Undecided voters find that Donald Trumps tone is sometimes bullying and unpolished. Although, many admit they might agree with some of his ideas. They are put off by the way he says things, not what he says. They are looking for trump to moderate his tone going forward. As they feel this is required to garner their respect as the leader and to be effective. The undecideds are looking for more reassurance before making a final decision and we are looking for modulation is the Campaign Continues and more details on how he will achieve his overall policy goals. They noted that the importance of who trump surrounds himself including most recently his vp pick, will be unimportant part of their consideration. Overall, Donald Trumps appeal is based in his passion for america and genuine concern with the health of the nation. He is perceived as having Good Business skills to which she can apply to his presidency. In fact, trumps business experience mirrors Association Voters have with the Republican Party. Its perceived to be more financially savvy and other parties i. E. Taxes, economic policies and they feel that it has handled Economic Issues well in the past eight years. Since the economy is at the forefront of voters minds the Republican Party and trump have a unique advantage over the democrats to push this aspect. Trump has clear advantages over Hillary Clinton in terms of perception that he will be able to improve the economy due to his Business Savvy and superiority in his knowledge and experience of bringing businesses back to the us and his focus on the middle class. Its not politics as usual. For both the national and immediate economy, business growth, Higher Quality of life and affordability should be the focus. Trumpet needs to put it in personal terms because moderates tend to see him as powerhungry, unfortunately. Trump is also perceived by undecided women voters as having the ability to make real change happen by simply saying what should be said, thus his supporters and undecided voters identify as people who are ready for real change and feel that its time for america to come first. Voters want someone who will take a stand and say what they mean. Overall, women of voters agree there may be a fair amount of uncertainty with trump, especially internationally, but they seem more benefits to having an outsider who isnt owned by anyone come in and shake things up, especially in washington. [applause]. And they want to try Something Different and they believe he will use his strong negotiating skills as a successful businessman to get a good deal for america. This, my friend, is something we can all get behind. Thank you. [applause]. We want to thank ashley for that incredible information. Lets give her a hand. That was awesome. [applause]. So, the independent womens voices just have proven all the naysayers and correct, hazmat . Hazmat . Hasnt it . We need to talk about why we support donald trump. Hes not perfect, but neither am i. We are proud to support that man, so lets continue. I also want to do a shout out with cleveland. Women though trump was to tell everyone how incredibly hospitable and wonderful we do it all not agree . [applause]. From the moments we got off the airplane to today i daresay i had just the most wonderful people. Very clean city and our Police Officers and security, lets all give them a big hand. [applause]. All those naysayers out there that say cleveland is not safe, thats not true because they have done a fantastic job and we want to applaud them as well. So, now i hope youre ready. Are you ready, ladies . Actually, i apologize. I thought i would rev it up a little bit. Im a little tease. She will talk to a bit about why she decided to be our state coordinator and why she is supporting donald trump. She has a fantastic story. Please give her a hand. Let me just give it a little bit about myself. Obviously, im not a celebrity, thank god. I am a boardcertified practicing pediatrician who loves children, and i have raised my own three children. I also was a former correctional candidate for the ohio district 13. Currently sits as Health Board Member for the county combined health district. I have a wonderful story to share with all of you how to get involved with this movement that i personally decided to support mr. Trump here i grew up in a dictatorial form of government when martial law was declared by the president narcos. I was 11, 12 years old when that happened. Obviously, i was apathetic. I didnt get involved because i was too young to understand and, obviously, so a lot of people who are voicing their opinions disappearing at that time. So i saw the atrocities of unbridled power. Going back to mr. Trump, his management of the current political and private and bodies my fears that we could potentially lose our freedoms if we did not support him. Im happy to say that when i was growing up i looked to the United States as my dream home country, and thank god i made it here. And i went through the proper vetting process of legal immigration. Obviously, thats one of his formal issues thats near and dear to my heart. But i would like immigration to be one of those priorities that he needs to iron out at this time. Secondly, i was involved with catherine, one of the cofounders of the women vote trump when i was running for office as part of the doctors and patients organization to attempt to repeal obamacare. Why did i get involved . Because i was one of those passionate doctors who wanted to continue my Personalized Care and relationships with my patients. [applause] thank you. Im going to turn a little bit emotional asset to the stories and comments that come from my patients that ive left, because i was forced to close my solo practice back when obamacare was passed. Because when i sat down with my accountant he told me it is going to be prohibitive financially for me to continue my practice. I joined corporate medicine and im very happy with my institution who has been wonderful with continuing the service that i started with my own practice. However, i still have a lot of colleagues who are private practitioners who want to continue their Personalized Care, but with the coming ethics of taxation through obamacare that a lot of people dont know, they will be forced to also close their own solo practices. Thats a major concern for me. Finally, i was 21 when i walked with 5 million filipinos to get back our freedom. So my first and foremost appeal for mr. Trump is that he embodies freedom of choice. I do not want to lose our freedom of choice for this country. So please walk with me and go to your voting precinct and vote for mr. Trump this coming november election. Thank you so much and god bless america. [applause] lets give dr. Agana another hand. [applause] we have people standing. What an incredible story. She said she is not a celebrity but in our eyes she has. We are proud to have her on our team. Now we are going to have ms. Diamond and mrs. Silk come speak to you about why they support donald trump. We are so proud to have been so please give them a hand. [applause] how yall doing . Thats good. [shouting] thats right. I like that. What are we supporting . First of all, if you all havent noticed, we black. Thats right. Just because we black we found out that doesnt mean we have to be democrat. [applause] thats right. We can come off the democratic plantation and we can vote for whoever we want to vote for. Thats right. We dont need the media School Feeding us a narrative. We can speak for ourselves and we started thinking for ourselves, and when we looked at donald j. Trump, we see a man that never wavers, nor does he back down. Thats what we love. Thats right. I love everything. Everythings been about donald j. Trump. He can do no wrong in my eyes. Listen, we have a problem at the border that needs to be secure your and if you go home at secure your house and the white house is secure, then americas house should be secure. [applause] thats right. We have a problem with People Living in poverty, living in impoverished neighborhoods. We had the opportunity yesterday to go to the hood. To the hood. And education dont all know what the hood is, the hood as a place where people gravitate to you and sometimes those places, people are in poverty or impoverished combat areas. Weve able to look back and see some things. We have to get jobs backward people are thriving again. Thats right, yeah. We been setting up under the same administration for almost eight years, signing trade deals to outsource good jobs. People are tired of being unemployed or underemployed. Nobody needs an obama phone. Give them a good job and they can buy their own phone. Thats right. Give them a job. So when you look at this administration compared to our man we call donald j. Trump, a 46 president of the United States can we see a man who wants to bring back jobs come wants to bring back law and order, want to unite this country and bring back the spirit. Thats all we see when look at donald j. Trump. Now, hes been in the public eye for almost 30 or 40 years, and they just start calling him out of this name and till he started running against those democrats. Let me tell you something. They dont stop losers but they will always try to stop the winter. Hes winning, yall. Hes winning. Hes winning, and he is going to be the 45th president of the United States. Thats right. [applause] they better get used to calling him president come. Youve got something you got to say this because ive got a little bit of got to see. We vote for donald j. Trump because we know that he is a job creator. You can create some jobs. How many jobs has hillary created . Not a one. Wait a minute spent a large want to talk about the one with her husband spent that was one. Go ahead. And she is also a motivator. How many people have Hillary Clinton motivated, you all . But she is motivating women by the droves to get and that vote for the man who wants the security of the country called donald j. Trump. Thats right. And he is a good negotiator. How many things has Hillary Clinton negotiated . Wait a minute. Because you on the failed left the growth off the hook to mention negotiated for husband, know what im saying . This system is rigged. This system is crooked. And Hillary Clinton, she is a crook and we are not letting another book off of the hook. The strange things that she did if the average american person do that today, youre going to go to jail for that. How is it that we have a system that only works so much for the elite but the rest of the people come you are going to go to jail . Lets fix the system where works for everybody. [applause] when we look at donald trump, he will come in and clean up this insider \mr. {|}\mister so listen, this is what everybody should you. If youre not registered vote and a note we are on cspan or where ever we cannot, if youre not registered to vote, make sure you get registered to vote. When you vote you want to make sure you vote for donald j. Trump. [applause] the ditch and switch. Ditch and switch now. Com. We all know we had to come up the democratic that we can vote for donald j. Trump. We were so inspired by that resource something called the ditch and switch movement back in september because we wanted more democrats to come out off the democratic plantation. Listen, you feed me a fish all of you going to do is make me that because all going to do is sit and easy. Be fishermen to fish you dont have to feed me nothing. I can go get it for myself, okay . Yes. [applause] and if you all vote for him. That may have helped a little bit. A movement for people to get out and vote. So thats ditch and switch. Com. So you can vote for donald trump in the general election. Listen to you all, this is pure passion. I have never been thrusting anything like this ended in my life but i am so excited to be part of what they call history. We didnt even know we are making history. We were just talking about donald trump. We were just talking to somebody that wants to make this place great again. He is the only one that has a master plan to do it. Its up to us to get behind them. No matter what cnn and i call them see in antiand when im mad, or cbs or nbc or whatever, msnbc, what ever they try to push, always remember that im only going to try to stop winners again not going to do nothing if you are loser. Hillary clinton is spending the of dollars, spending millions of dollars to stop donald j. Trump. Every chance that our current president gets to get us an international platform, he takes the opportunity to throw donald trump under the bus. Instead of throwing donald trump under the bus, how about throwing ices under the bus . [applause] student how about trying to get one we have americans wanted to gun down our Law Enforcement officers . Thats right. [applause] how about we get back to the indices ethics of infrastructures so people can thrive again . Used the time that youve got wisely, instead of taking the time to throw donald j. Trump under the bus because he is going to be the 45th president of the United States. Are you all on the trunk train . [applause] are you all on the trunk train . Aalborg. Are we all aboard . Stay tuned. Byebye. [applause] oh, my goodness can lets give them another hand. [applause] we also wanted to recognize the key johnson of the National Federation of republican women. He appreciated their support as well. Give her a hand. [applause] im going to go and somebody else. I love his shirt. You love women that vote trump. Come up here. Up here. Come up here. I love this hat as well. We want to show him a. Take a bow for the cameras. Men do love women who vote trump. So dont let the naysayers full you. Yes, lets make sure you get a good picture. All right. Give him another hand. [applause] women vote trump. Com, thats where you can get that shirt. Before we than i wanted to do a little bit of a question to answer for you guys. We dont have a lot of time but first of all i wanted to note something and dr. Agana im sure you will agree, i dont know a lot of people know about this about donald j. Trump. I wanted to reduce to you and help you become more knowledgeable when youre talking to people about women to support donald trump. Donald trump has promised to fight the corrupt and incompetent da executives who that our veterans down and update the va policies to meet the needs of the younger veterans who serve in iraq and afghanistan. What a great thing. Lets give him a hand for that. [applause] heres the part many of you probably dont know about donald trump which i find quite interesting that the news media doesnt talk about this. This is a quote from mr. Come. The fact many va hospitals dont permanently staff ob gyn doctors chosen utter lack of respect for the growing number of female veterans. I could not agree more. How wonderful he thinks of as women. How many of you would agree with that . [applause] the media will not report this thats why we want anyone to know what the truth is. Its not a woman problem for trump. The woman problem comes from immediate and the propaganda. He also said andy would add Mental Health programs for veterans can also incentivize companies to our veterans, the news media began and the liberals would lead you to believe that donald trump doesnt care about women. Have you heard about his views on the veterans in particular that i just discussed . Have you heard that . No, you havent. You take it home and to discuss that as well. I have a few questions im going to ask the panel so bear with me. Anyone ca to answer these questions. When asked these just come up and we will let you answer them. My first question. I apologize. I lost my sheet. Okay. Why do you think, i know we have touched on this, but you ladies, why do you think they are playing the hillary card so much . Why do you think that they are saying just because were women that we automatically vote for her . We know shes a successful woman but why do you think they keep playing that card . Can someone answer that for me . Theres a couple reasons. That is that the Democratic Party place identity politics. Its divide and conquer. Categorizing people and putting them in little boxes something they do well. On the hillary card, specifically women can i have democratic strategist years ago tell me they made a conscious decision they knew they were losing men. They made a conscious decision to try to change the approach to win over women. They did it in many other ways by trying to keep them on the plantation, by convincing them that they needed government to be able to stand up and do things that they needed to do for the families and children. In fact, thats a lie. This is a planned strategy that they carrie have carried out who use this identity politics and they convince people they need democrats demand out government favors, programs in order for them to survive, and its not true. [applause] im going to direct this question to diamond and silk. Are you ready . Ladies, they talk about National Security. Lets go back to hit with clinton because we are all about exposing the truth about what she says, her own words. We dont have to say much. Shes is a lot. We are curious to know what do you think about the email scandal thats going on at our National Security . Her being the second estate. Weve been told and weve seen leaders tell us that she has broken a federal law. Whats your opinion and how did you about her being our next president . I think when you break federal law she should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. She shouldve been indicted. She should have been indicted. You know, off the record, Martha Stewart lied to the fbi. She was jailed. How is it that Hillary Clinton applied but they may try to cover it up this is not a light switch can do anything about that . And she was reckless and careless. You mean to tell me we want Something Like that running our country . You cannot put our National Security correctly if you cant keep desperately going to protect millions of americans speak with thats right. Were going to be riding dirty, the all. She needs to be jailed. Thats right. [applause] do we have any questions from the audience someone would like to ask . Its okay if you dont. Go ahead. [inaudible] i happened to be on the board win catherine kept fighting against obamacare. I think the major problem that we have in the Republican Party, and im getting to my question, is that we do not accept people on its like what these women were talking about. We were fortunate to be at the premiere last night. I recommend everybody watch that. In kansas which is the ready state in the country and i will tell you [inaudible] and there are people who say never trump your i cant come up whenever vote for that man. There are others who say they were going to electively. I think the message we need to send is the fact that whether you like or dont like donald trump you need to look at the issues surrounding. I am a Health Care Policy adviser. They dont want the same old tale stuff we had from the Republican Party for a long time. Im pleased with mike pence. My question to you is how do we get the message out to those who never trump, women and men, who are good strong republicans but they have a real problem with us thinking that donald trump is not a true republican about getting that message out that you need to understand who Hillary Clinton really is, a dv think you are really okay with four more years of hillary, whether you like a trunk or not, you need to not only vote for him but you need to support them. I think that first when did have a conversation about this is not about party. Its about our country. Its disappointing that the are so many people that have been involved in Party Politics for a long time that are not here now. It seems they are putting themselves above the country. Their own personal interests. I think you all know who im talking about. Right now we are in a healing period where you still have these never trump, cruise delicates their talk about an uprising going on during the convention. Weve all about it. Im sure weve seen some things. I love its going to be successful but its their last cry and i am sympathetic to them i understand. I think we need to give him time to grieve and heal and as the summer goes on and especially next week when hillary, when shes having, when theyre having their convention and shes been nominated for that party, i think i may start thinking about things in a different light. Ive learned in my involvement of politics you cant go out and teach anyone anything, tell them how it should be. You need to ask questions and have the conversations and plant the seeds in their heads. Because they will probably come around to some of them probably will not but most of them will come around but that may not ever tell you about fma not do it publicly. I think thats most important thing is to have come plant those seeds and have the conversations. [inaudible] speaking as working americans, i want people, when they ask me in the hospital what i think about those never trump naysayers supporters can i just tell them i want you guys to go past rhetoric and sound bites and look at your children and focus on the future you want for your children and the future generation. If you can see that there is hope in the future for them to have freedom of choice with Hillary Clinton, by all means support her. But by not supporting donald trump. But i should with you my story. So thats why i firmly believe that mr. Trump embodies freedom of choice and thats what we need to tell them. [applause] i agree with the comments that came before that add to that one of the reasons we formed a group like women vote trump and it has become home and a coalition of all of the different groups that are supporting trump that are female based is because we are part of how you get the word out. We are already starting to do it through social media, trying to raise money to also put things out on standard broadcast to reach people who are not on social media. But all of that with all the different groups coming out, supporting groups, that is sporting trump will be another way to get it out. They will have to do some paid advertising. Its interesting because i know folkfolks around trump said thaf he puts out a tweet he gets a few Million People engaged in a conversation, and thats great but what about all the people we know that are not on twitter, who dont follow twitter . We are reaching a certain part of the electorate but theres a lot more that weve got to go back to some of the standards and pay for advertising to get it out there. That which the trump campaign, support for groups like ours is extreme import. I want to thank the people who were able to make it to the barricades today and able to get there. And also for the people who were here earlier but had to leave because they had other events. It was interesting in putting this event together, in getting the word out, to your question, and getting cspan involved we thought that was important as well. Some of the of the press is here is the way to get the word out. We know cspan is a great unfiltered unbiased source, and thats what we are very proud they are here today. [applause] i just asked ashley at the polling from independent womens voice is available and yall okay. We can make some the points that i spoke about today available, if you can just come see me at the end. We want to thank you for coming today. We are sorry we cant take anymore questions for cspan but we welcome you to stay after and will be happy to answer questions for you. As all these wonderful ladies, and thank you for your questions, we add women vote trump want to help you be that voice. We need your help. We need donations. We are not with the campaign and as you all know, Hillary Clinton has a huge outside source helping to raise money. What we want to do is we want to get these advertisements that i cannot say the word advertisements, thats my southern coming out, to let people know that we know the true voice, if they know what is really going on. So please go to women vote trump. Com, condor social media pages and see whats going on at we want to keep you informed. We will be in all 50 states. I didnt thank you for coming. We appreciate you today. We hope you have a great time at the convention. And please give all of our panelists a round of applause. [applause] thank you again. [inaudible conversations] the latest news out of the Republican Convention in cleveland today. Politico writing that it has a staff writer for the Trump Organization said she offered to send over the plagiarism controversy Milling AroundMelania Trump runtime Convention Speech but said donald trump rejected the camp. In a statement she said the striking similarities between Melania Trumps remarks and Michelle ObamasConvention Speech in 2008 were purely accidental. Over the phone she read me some passages from mrs. Obama speech as examples. I wrote them down and later include some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. I did not check mrs. Obama speeches. That was my mistake and i feel terrible for the chaos i have caused melania and the trunks as well as to mrs. Obama. No harm was meant. You can read more about that at politico. Com. Todays Convention Gets Underway 7 30 p. M. Eastern time. 15 tonight make America First again. Featured speakers tonight include former gop president ial hopefuls marco rubio and ted cruz, also Newt Gingrich and donald trump son will be speaking. We are talking about classroom and higher education. There theres a whole piece of the industry that lives in hightech world and of course in the news media. It is actually providing a role in learning. We are really thrilled here. We have that. It is debating everything that is happening these days in education. And it certainly is the reason why we started curious. Today we will talk with mike and alyssa. And the role that news media plays in education and learning throughout life. We are recording conversations out there on the patio. All kinds of fascinating people talking about learning and their own curious journeys. We encourage you to join you for those things. Today the topic at hand is news to knowledge and what role does the news media play . We have a lisa miller who is the ceo of public radio international. Im a huge public radio junkie. Public radio is a large source. Lets give a round of applause. Public radio is carrying the torch for many people in the role of lifelong learning. It provides a lot of the wedged learning that happened throughout your day. And another organization that plays a big role is mike from clipboard. If you think about how people use clipboard its about wedging learning and throughout your day. We are gonna see what comes out. I have asked them to talk about what they think their organization is responsible for. My quite a few start. It seems that people have been talking about these things. When i was in high school a freshman there was no hope that i was going to college. I was not a good student at all. I was the oldest of six kids. My dad was dying of cancer. My mom was distracted with keeping track of running a Small Business that my dad and mom had built over the years. It was struggling as a result. I couldve gone either way in high school. I couldve ended up on the outside of the pyramid. It was a tough time. The only thing really, that i was interested in was the fact that we have a computer lab. It was one of the first time i have seen a computer. I remember going into the lab you couldnt take any courses until you were a senior so i was a freshman so it was a long ways off but you could use the computers. I have no idea what i was doing. How do you use these things . And because there were no courses there was a magazine called 99 or magazine. It was back in 1981. These computers in this magazine was read all about these computers and they would feature programs that people would write and you could see all of the source code. Then there would be an article about how the program was created. So i became a huge avid reader of these magazines. Another magazine called creative computing magazine. I would read these and learn about programming. I learned about what it was like to be an entrepreneur. A lot of the things we saw were things with steven jobs and apple and bill gates and a lot of things happening in Silicon Valley. I really started to get inspired to program, i learned and taught myself. I got inspired about building a business. Started to think about making my own videogame that i could submit to one of these magazines. I was finally able to get a videogame publisher about 50 for it. I went from there. My whole future was shaped by what i read. The stories i read in these magazines that taught me and expired me and made me the person i am today. What im doing with clipart is really about creating an environment where those kinds of Great Stories can be discovered by people who when they see that it will change their life. It will move them forward. A student, professional, political leader, teacher. That is why we are building clipboard. We had built it over six years about 85 Million People around the world who use it. They use it to collect Great Stories and package the stories up about things theyre passionate about. You follow your interest. What you see are things that people are sharing and curating about those interests. It is a wonderful experience and is modeled after a magazine. It is a beautiful use of an iphone or tablet. Its very interactive. Its made for you its curated by people who share your passions in your enthusiast him dash make your enthusiasms for what you are interested in. Its all about lifelong learning. Its about inspiring people with Great Stories. Its been an amazing journey. Do you have a story to share with us also about how you started in public radio . Or the passion you found for this medium. There is some similarities and some of our stories and when we all find our passion often time the seat when seed when we are young. The earlier discussion is so important to that. I have always been very interested in media and technology and storytelling. I actually learned how to read my first word from watching sesame street. It was the word it, by the way. I remember that moment of the storytelling and having that interaction in my life. It was important to me. So when an apple to eat computer showed up at our house i was really curious about it. I started to try to figure out how to make the light dash across the screen and it taught myself programming. I was a girl interested in stem even stem even before we knew what it was. I didnt know people who programmed. I thought people who were engineers worked on cars. I have this no idea that there was this whole other world out there. Fast fastforward, 25 years later i became the have of Digital Products for sesame street. It was interesting coming full circle for me. I was enthralled with working with elmo. One day, i got a call about a job in public radio international. I had been involved with. I said, this is my dream. I trade in a fuzzy puppet for carl castle. But its kind of all the same thing. Its about how we had people who are compelling and storytelling and how can we engage them in an interesting conversation. We are in exciting times and we are also in scary times when it comes to media and technology and education. Whether educating or building knowledge or not. There is some really Interesting Data on that. At pri the way we approach these issues is to think about knowledge and where can we fulfill unmet needs. How can we make a difference. The three areas we focus on the fact that there is massive spreads of misinformation and society now. Is not just about informing and putting it out there its understanding that is understanding that there are forces that are pushing information out that is actually incorrect. And in fact, the World Economic forum there is a agenda in a survey each year in 2014 the massive spread of misinformation was one of the top ten challenges facing the world. When we think about our work the other nine problems global warming, how we deal with income inequality in all kinds of issues, if you dont have the information and you dont have the fact for number ten it can affect the other nine. And the second piece we look at is how we can bring more voices into the conversation that arent there today. There are six corporations that control 90 of news product in the United States in terms of what people see and hear and read. We need to head antidotes to that. We need to use technology to help you counterbalance to that. Finally there is widespread apathy that comes from disenfranchisement because people dont feel that there is opportunity for them to be a part of the solution. We are looking at how media and knowledge and action can play a part in how people can change their lives and feel more connected with their communities and build knowledge at the same time. We will get to the responsibility part in the second. All three of our organizations feel a responsible role in curating this knowledge. Its interesting that you both head a story about a computer. It was my tereus moment when i was in the sixth grade and they ran out of math curriculum and if you took the pretest of the book you just cannot test it out than you were done. They would send you to the library. Myself and a couple other people were sent to the library on the third day of school. There happened to be i assume you are working on that problem and it doesnt happen anymore. It was in wichita, kansas. We have a computer there. I remember so clearly trying to figure out what this computer thing was. Thats how i wrote a programming language for kids. Is there something there. As we are taking technology into the classrooms that may be some of the best ways to have those moments is to always be outside of that classroom. The feeling a pioneer in discovery has to happen on your own. It is an interesting thought. I want to talk about the responsibility that we feel. Clipboard is doing editorial. Give a group of people who are not licensed by the government or anybody else to make those decisions. While pri you are a nonprofit you are also doing editorial in curating. There are other programs not doing any of that. They are pushing one side of the agenda. Talk about what you feel the responsivity is that you have to make sure that your editorial job is being done the right way as you see it . How does that tie into the organization . We are a Small Organization with a fairly large footprint. Pri itself is a hundred people. We reach about 20 Million People each month with our content across radio and digital platform. So in addition to covering the news cycle itself which is something we do across all of our programming we look at these prices where there is unmet content need or there is a problem in trying to figure out why is it happening and what systemic is happening. How can we be a solution . It wasnt us observation. There is an interesting study that comes out every year called who makes the news. It looks at how women are portrayed in media and pacifically news media. They are seen only 24 percent of the time featured in any way in the news. So when you consider and a majority of that tends to be stereotypical. Objectification in stereotypical roles, victims et cetera. When you look at this and this is across the entire world. This is the 24 its an average across the entire world. Interestingly the u. S. Is the third worst in terms of stereotypical portrayals behind the middle east and africa. So we noted this. Its not purposeful but i think you could look at it and say it is actually mass deception. We dont have an accurate picture of the world because women are not present. We all know that women are 50 of the population in and doing all kinds of things. We make decisions in our content to make sure that women are a part of every kind of story. So 56 percent of pris stories feature women which is what you would expect in terms of where we are in the population. Its about choices that we make not only in the composition of our content but where we can go deeper because specific topics are important that may or may not be covered as much in the news cycle because it may be its harder from a p l standpoint to make the justification of why you would invest in a certain area. And because we are a social enterprise and we have our earned revenue we can make different decisions. We talk a lot about the luxury of choice of where we tried to dive deeper and how can we not only to our own work but set an example of growth and show case studies about when you dont ignore women how you actually grow like crazy. If you dont want to do it because its the right thing to do it will do it because you will experience growth. That is part of the way we make decisions and try to approach our work. Do you keep tabs on that to make sure you are providing 50 coverage of women . Yes, within the next number of months we will be releasing this because we had been inspired by parts of what Silicon Valley is doing to address some of the issues. We often have numbers in aggregate but you dont have them down to an individual organizational level. But not only the inputs of truth creating it but also what is being created. How can we set up environments like that that can create incentives for others i dont know if youre familiar with the back hold test. Though i dont actually know her first name. Two women are talking. The only thing they talk about a man is in the movie. 70 of the movies she cant see it because its the only way that women are portrayed in the movie. Weve been thinking a lot about what is the beck told test for news. Its not just about women its about various groups that are majority particularly when you look at millenials. And how they are or arent being reflected. Its really about trying to create signals of transparency so when people are consuming your content they know what they are getting in aggregate. We are very interested in that. Theres a lot of opaqueness in the way the news media is covered because its always happening. And how you can actually show and create seals of approval so people know that is what i might getting there from this particular source. Mike can you share about how clipboard thinks about this problem. How much response ability do you think you have. Now increasingly people get their news from social media channels. They get it from a lot of their friends posted on facebook and things like that. The challenge with that is that the type of things that tend to get shared are the things that ended up being more lengthy. You get completely random content. Its like a slot machine for content. You never know what youre going to get. You will get some self is in some diet ads. What we try to do is create an experience that was really geared more about you follow your interest. You have your friends involved but primarily youre following your interest. And second rather than just having algorithm it approaches we actually had people involved who are handpicking the news story by story every single day so that we have really high quality stories from the worlds best sources package together not just the stories that are the best link baited title. We are looking for really high quality content. That we try to do across the board. Its a big responsibility that we had to our audience to really provide highquality wellbalanced news that is something that is truly informative rather than something that is the most popular. It would count as a knowledge or valuable information. I would say our audience by and large they come to clipboard to get that high quality content. Thats what theyre looking for. Its easy to find all of the link bait step. This is a place to go where you dive deep on things like gun control or Climate Change or things you love like Mountain Biking or sailing. Anything in between going to a place that is about the things you are passionate about that has the best content for that is something is why they use clipboard. Do they also have a place in the classroom. Is there a way to take the model and actually incorporate it into real classroom learning . That is a big reason why i was excited to be a part of this discussion today. Teachers use clipboard to package the best story for their students the curriculum that they are doing. If you want to find the best resources across the entire internet package them together in a way thats easy to reach for students who live on their smart phone. They can all read the stories together is certainly easy to do. You can do that like integrate Current Events where not only the teacher but all of the students can coat contribute stories to a magazine about economics so you can get Great Stories that the teacher has put in as well as the students are contributing here is a really great event. Perhaps having to do with the future of the oil and oil prices and how they affect the economy. That kind of packaging is truly awesome. Its how teachers use clipboard if you go to flip edu. You can see all the different ways they are using it to educate themselves and other teachers. They can share all of the best content and length that they had found over the years to teach their students. Teachers can share best practices in Technology Breakthroughs in new ways to get to kids on smartphones through these magazines that can curate read and follow. It has taken up tremendously hundreds of thousands of teachers using clipboard to reach kids when they are on their smart phone. And then kind of environment that they are used to to spending time. What about public radio is there a place for audio and radio in the classroom . Public broadcasting more broadly provides curriculum and content based on pbs programming. Mostly video base. With public radio, because our content tends to be a bit more adult really looking at high school and primarily in college. We find that our Audio Content is being used a lot in the goal is to get a lot of solicitation for information of people wanting this and how to half lists of what should i understand about iran. Whats the history of the region. Various things. To what mike was talking about. We have also done things in terms of having our Audio Content and transcript available through various systems and libraries around the country. We have looked at it from various forms in public media it tends to be a stronger connection when it comes to pre k12 we do know that a lot of teachers are using the content professors in a University Setting and post secondary education in part because it is relevant. The content that is based upon what is happening in the news or powerful stories to understand the underlying economic forces or the underlying Science BehindClimate Change or how this particular law can affect this group of people and this kind of way. It can creates the connection is one of the most powerful teaching tools. The election cycle is an obvious example of that. Almost all of the information youre getting is from the news media. I imagine your newsroom has been blowing up with discussions about that topic. Can you talk about your perspective on the current election . Are you doing special things or trying to make sure that the information is being presented in a certain weight during this crazy time . Now is an incredibly poor time to do that. We are trying to be there with perspective about the current media. Such extremism right now. The problem is thats the stuff that gets picked up those are the headlines that people click on. That gets propagated. We really think its important to create an environment that balances that out. We want to show the different positions sidebyside. From the left and from the right , et cetera and try to create that broader perspective the challenging part is that if you let numbers or ratings drive what news Programming Program you do you will end up in a situation where you will just add more fuel to the crazy things that are being said right now and the election. I dont think thats good for anybody. I think figuring out a way a lot of people want the truth. They want to understand what is the real deal. Creating an environment that gets to that is absolutely crucial. I think trying to show one of the things we are really focused on his facts. And really trying to get an underlying powerful story and relating to facts. There is a lot in our discourse right now that is it actually based on facts in terms of reality. And the challenges in a world where there is so much hyperbole and how to cut through. Try not to cover what everyone else is covering so we really look at the first and Second Generation americans. And what are the facts about in how we can make that connection. We focus in what is starting. What is the millennial perspective . As an important arbitrator of what the future could hold it is one of the most economically challenged generations maybe ever. In terms of the disparity. What does that mean . Why are they attracted in one form or another too certain candidates in an environment like that . Is a very important conversation. And finally the interesting thing about millenials being very interested in what happens in the world but also a disconnect between actions and voting. That seem so boring compared to new images of Donald Trumps wife. Or talking about the food fights that are having in the election. How do you resist the candy that is all over the place that more and more coverage. And then the coverage about the coverage. How do you resist that urge when that is everywhere. I think you have to know what you are and why people come to you. They come to pri or clipboard because they know they can get a real deal. That is what they are looking for. The good news is there are plenty of people who want to do that. As long as you dont give into that temptation of catering to the link bait you can create an environment that people will love. You have to monetization model that sustains that. Highquality premium advertising. Not a bunch of dive add. Fullpage ads from rolex or breitling or gucci. Things that are aspirational they are much more valuable. We have a lot fewer advertisers on clipboard its really more about class than mass. That ends up being a lot more valuable and creates a much more sustainable environment for the highquality content. You can close this out. To me it seems like you have to resist. There is a candy in the candy store and its impossible to keep the kids from going to the candy. How do you keep from that. You have to try to be profitable and build an audience how do you resist the temptation . And what can we as a collective audience who is consuming this media what can we do to help keep the media from doing that . First of all using curated platform in your own experience is super important. Its important to have multiple sources and perspectives. Understand that through your social media feeds youre not always getting that in part because of the way it works. Not understanding what youre not seen as what youre consuming as a part of the loop. An interesting book by eli frazier. Its really t
