City, never want another child to grow up with that type of burden. One of those burdens that never goes away. The author of writing my wrongs discusses is 19 years in prison and his life after. Go to booktv. Org for the complete weekend schedule. Ryan anderson is author of truth overruled the future of marriage and religious freedom. What is the point of your book . This is the first book length response to the Supreme Court ruling on the samesex marriage question. I explain why the court got the ruling wrong as a matter of constitutional law and as a matter of philosophy. The nature of what marriage is and why it matters. From there i go to say what americans should do to defend religious freedom for those who believe the truth about marriage are not penalized by the government. Host teen how in your view did they get it wrong constitutionally . The Supreme Court says the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment required states to redefine what marriage is. The debate in favor of marriage equality, we all want the law to treat all marriage is equally. What we disagreed about is what type of relationship is a Marital Relationship . Five unelected judges have no greater insight than you or i do as to the nature of marriage. The constitution is silent on the question of what is marriage so the people should have voted to say what consenting adult relationship is a Marital Relationship. That is the only way the question should have been answered. Host is this a moral issue . Guest it is a moral issue, political issue, Public Policy issue. For the legal question is what sort of relationship should the government be treating is a Marital Relationship and that wont be answered to be to appeal to the principle of equality. Equality alone doesnt tell us what sort of relationship we should treat equally. For that you need philosophy, you need a philosophy of what marriage is. What i do in truth overruled the future of marriage and religious freedom is a philosophical defense of marriage of the Conjugal Union of man and woman, husband and wife, mother and father. Host so much of society is built on marriage and so many laws are built on marriage too. Arent a class of people being denied those same rights . Taxes come to mind immediately. Guest what class of people are you talking about . Some may think polygamous or polyamorous or people who dont want to get married. No matter what law you have on marriage some people will be included in that definition and some relationships are not going to be included. You need the right definition of marriage. Every marriage policies draws a line between what is a marriage and what is not a marriage. If you want the line to be drawn, what is the truth about marriage and what got the government interested in marriage in the first place . I argue marriage is based on presecular truth, anthropological through that men and women artistic the complement he, biological fact reproduction requires of a man and woman and a social reality that shows a man and a father, these are the reasons, secular reasons for why every society until 2000 recognized marriage as the union of male and female. Second half of the book, what do we do now . Now that the court has overturned marriage laws what do we do to protect tolerance and pluralism, diversity, religious freedom so that people who dont support the new vision of marriage are not harassed or penalized by the government . Host what is one of your solutions . Guest after the roe v wade decision, there was a constitutional right to abortion, we said prolife doctors and prolife nurses shouldnt be forced to perform abortions, the Supreme Court says you have a right to choose an abortion, congress created a law that says you have a right not to choose perform an abortion, same thing, Supreme Court said samesex couples have a right to recognize the relationship as marriage, we need congress and others to say that means bakers, florists, they dont have to help celebrate the samesex wedding, they dont have to violate their believe that marriage is union of a man and a woman. Host what is your background . What drove you to write this book . Guest i was an undergraduate at princeton and most of my classmates disagreed with me, not just that they disagree but couldnt even understand the other perspective on this. They thought it was something inconceivable. I did my phd in political philosophy at the university of notre dame so i come at this from the question of political philosophy. Many are from a political perspective, theological and ethical. I look at it as a philosophical question about Public Policy and the audience i have in mind is my former classmates at princeton, welleducated individual who is a secular liberal, this book is written for them to understand why half of america thinks the way i think and it is written for that half of america to better articulate what they believe. It is written for all americans. Host right now is it a truth that it is up to the congress . It has to be on a National Level if any changes are made to the status of gay marriage . Guest the Supreme Court itself would have to reverse its decision likely roe v wade decision, states make good on laws of abortion but the court may strike those down or we find a way to have wiggle room in which we reaffirm roe v wade but allow states to regulate abortion, same thing would have to take place in marriage. They say we got it wrong or you need to have something for samesex relationships, they dont have to be marriages, civil unions or Something Like that. The conscience protection, religious levity can be done by local governments, State Government and federal. Every government can say we wont penalized Catholic Charity adoption agencies because they want to find orphans, and three jurisdictions they have been shut down, Boston Catholic Charities shut down because they dont want to do samesex adoption. If we want to have civil peace after the samesex willing we have to agree to disagree. If you are in favor of samesex marriage, if you are not in favor of it, to make the wedding cake. Ryan anderson at seatac where the c stands for conservative but a lot of libertarians support gay marriage and a lot of libertarians. The panel in a few minutes, two conservatives, one of the speakers is a gay conservative, we disagree about marriage, two of us favor the historic definition, two in favor of the new definition, or four agree no one should be coerced by the government. We agree on the liberty amendment so they would say we are in favor of gay marriage but dont want to force ryan who is against it to violate his conscience. That is the Common Ground here.
