Eternal hope in some visionary concern as a leader who will be able to sell core, small government, vigorous capitalist ideas to the populace. I would ask you if you are advising such a visionary leader, what would you advise them to say, how can we sell this to the people . I wish i had an answer to that. The problem is, a great portion of the public is receiving benefits of one kind from the government. They are scared when people say theyre going to be cut. I think its estimated that 110 Million People trying benefits from poverty programs of one kind or another. 110,110,000,000, that is one third of the country. Theyll be medicaid, foodstamp, welfare, and about 90 such programs. There are 60 Million People join Social Security benefits. Something close to that trying medicare. Youre talking about 180 Million People trying benefits, either Social Security, medicare, medicaid, food stamps, and so on. That is on. That is getting to be a fairly large number. Ronald reagan was not able to cut those programs. He was able to slow their growth and give money to the fence and try to grow the economy. That is the problem we are up against. A lot of people fear they are going to cut their benefits. I think you can make the case that Economic Growth is the best way to advance our income and standard of living. That would be the way to do it. I believe republican republican candidates have tried to do that. With mixed success. In his handtohand combat now, trying to stem the ties. Says in 1983 there is about 40 Million People people drying benefits on the poverty programs. In 2012, there are 110 million. Thats in advance of 70 million in 30 years. Thats part of the increase in our population. Thats a period where republicans were in office, so i would like to give you a great answer but notwithstanding all of this we have gone through a good era, im im afraid its coming to an end. We have had phenomenal innovations, stock markets great, cities have recovered. We have to be realistic about these things. I dont believe the democrats are going to disappear. So talk about utopian ideas. [laughter] you talked about 70 marginal tax rate, some people say 90 . You know nobody would stay . At least i wouldnt. Im not sure i think i read the real effect of the tax rate in the 1950s was in the 30s somewhere. There is a of writeoffs in that period. The improvement wanted to take us back to 80 or 90 was none of that. Of course they appear to want to increase the Capital Gains tax as well. Another question. A comment, that unfortunately they got together and im not sure if youre been million with it but a politician should never tell his constituents and only tell them good news. I tell them and say if you really do need a root canal your dentist is not doing any favor by not telling you that. My, question would be in fact i think most republicans, actually have very little appreciation of philosophical goal understanding of the benefits of free market. Because it is an invisible hand you have to understand it and be able to explain it, let them know why you want to reduce regulations and they can play capitalism which is simply which i view is important and necessary condition. The real benefit would be a much better belief and understanding of the free market and our ability to explain it. I certainly agree with that. The only comment that is most economists who understand markets are liberal democrats. I think republicans have embraced in recent decades the free market. Richard nixon in 1971 and gerald ford dealt with inflation. I think we have come a long way since that. I would like to thank jim again [applause].
