The News Research service. They sent it to all the major newspapers across the country to many members of congress to the present himself to the people in the Justice Department and so on and it began to have a reputation as a very good source of news about these kind of fascist groups. When japan joined germany and italy, then the group started publishing things about Imperial Japan as well and in the end they published several pieces in the late 1930s and 39 mostly about japaneseamericans. Now clearly they were not going to passing in the same way that they passed among the austrians that they were getting the information from somewhere else, and a lot of the things that they circulated had been long circulated by the many antijapanese forces. There was a lot of antijapanese tension in the west and had been for some time. So, they read in the offsite report of the japaneseamerican textbooks that were used in afterschool programs that cultivated loyalty and were antidemocratic and that kind of thing. Then once pearl harbor happened, those reports got picked up even further and so the Service Information that they had gathered in depth being abused in the various government reports. So for example the Affairs Committee in the earlier version of that it was chaired by congressman martin called the Diet Committee and there was a lot of context between the committee and the group to News Research service that is part. Their information goes into some of the testimony that helps justify the removal of japaneseamericans. So it was a rather unexpected finding. Old at the time and in the years thing. There was a knowledge of the News Research service applies heart of the information that it wasnt known that that was a Jewish Organization until i found this information. Its very odd to read that me tt organizations materials because at the same time that this is going on, they are spending a huge amount of effort on working on these antiprejudice campaigns. I think that what happened was that it is useful for them to have the context in the government and in the committee and so on and they were aware it had issues with excess hummus of it wasnt going after fascists but also communists. But its got the word out so effectively about the danger of nazi ism and that was their primary concern. The vast majority of the material was about fascism and primarily about the pro german groups. And the japaneseamerican stuff was not great in volume and was sort of incidental and secondary. It was something that did it because the kennedys and others asked him for information and they got the information from elsewhere into a kind of fumbled through them. However, it did end up having an impact. So there was a report put out by the Diet Committee about the dangers of the japaneseamerican community. It had a more formal name that became known as the dive yellow paper. A lot of that information comes straight out of the News Research service. So they ended up doing a lot of that. Yeah. Even during the war, this coalition of the pro civil Rights Groups together and one of things they do i the things o work to enable the japaneseamericans to come to their home and that starts in 43, 44 to try to get the government to distinguish between those people who might for whom there might be individual suspicion as opposed to the canadian general and to allow them to come home and this group is involved in that work. And theres no indication that anyone but they dont acknowledge that there are histories written of the group. There is an oral history and when they get to this part of the organization they ask them to turn the tape recorder off so i wasnt able to hear what his comments were but they do work very hard to support the community afterwards and someone has to think that they realize that they had done wrong in this case. These are people including joseph these are people that spend their lives working on civil rights issues and they participated in this was really shocking. People have a difficult time hearing that. There were certainly Jewish Americans who stood up just as there were other american that stood up and opposed these policies. They were in the minority, certainly they were very much in the minority. But people dont expect to hear the story, and unfortunately, it is the story of kind of getting in bed with the wrong people, so they got in bed because with people like martin dive and so on because he was able to further their campaign against the antisemitism antisemitismg so, they ended up doing damage to another. Many people read history looking for good guys and bad guys and here is the case where if you look to go back to the organization in los angeles these are people that dedicated their life to civil rights and even they got caught up in a sort of wartime hysteria expediency and so on. So it isnt just so simple as good guys and bad guys. As we saw at the time of 9 11 when people were so horrible they are not as thoughtful as the mighty, and so i would hope that would be the message messad id certainly not trying to vilify the committee, certainly if you look at the Jewish Community overall, the fact that they maintained in the official silence for the most part at first i started doing the research i saw that as a failing because i expected them to speak out but when you look at the processing of timeprocess in the virtually screaming from the rooftops that all of the japaneseamerican community should be taking away by not jumping on that bandwagon. That says something. So i shifted from seeing that as a failure to seeing it as, you know, they realize they were not going to get on that bandwagon. So its not quite what i expected and its often not the lesson that people expect to hear, especially when i go out to the Community Groups people will come to the book or come to my lecture expecting that they are going to hear the story of the people that stood up, and there is some of that in the book. But it is much more than we would expect. For more information on booktvs recent book to salem, oregon and in many other cities visited by the local content vehicle, go to
