[applause] eldikrf you. send us your feedback. twitter.com/tv. >> you are watching booktv on c-span2. we are on location in new yk cit auabo publishing industry convention held at the javits convention center. a new author's book coming out in september, kevin powers has wrn n cle vea lefr background so people understand where you are coming from. >> i grew u in virginia. at 79 signed up for the army. that was 1997. before m senior yar hh en up going to new -- iraq in 2004-2005, got back. i have always than a writer too. when i got back from overseas arrealized i had a story yewo after i got back. >> how long were you in the army and the armed forces? >> guest: eight years total. >> hos did you feel fulfilled being in the armed forces? >> guest: there was a lot like about it. i appreciated the discipline and learned a lot about myself and it was a privilege to serve any of forces. >> host: you are in iraq in 2003-2004. >> gue: 2004-25. >>sten g band lehey what was it like? >> guest: one of the things diffict coming back is lack of order and direc asfft tan bin t military and especially overseas, you know what is expected of you. as hard as your job is right in front of you you have to go do it. when you get home and stimuli coming back from the desert, everything is overwhelming. really challenging. >> what did youimo nno wi supposed to do next. i knew i was going to get out of the military after i got back from my tour and i sort of didn't know what the next step go be. >> host: you started riding "the yellow birds". you started writing a novel. how did you submit it. this was published blile ow >> a commonwealth university. i took creative writing classes andoetry at that time. ended up in graduate school in texas and showed it to professo w we enag also a graduate of commissioners. readt and really loved it and experience in iraq? >> it would not have happened with the at the experience that i had. not what happened to me overseas but the sort of emotional ce t bwameg i edgetre and communicate to people who didn't understand that experience. one of the most frequent questions i got asked. what was ilike over there. it ird to knwow todd t ihao wh to write the book. to how i contend with that question what is it like? >> host: y talked about the emotional core. what about the emotions you brought out in "the llow onon yoveobdo aou understand your job. you may not understand all the repercussions for the way it will affect you down the line and particularly at affect your fily home. d the hd ou sed and heard time to mature and get a little older, and not just yrers our families bachome. it is from marching cadence. aditnal mych elobih t ylow bill. anyone who has been in the army. >> host: why make this a novel raer than a fact based book? >> guest: aot opeal about the big picture view of what has happened in iraq and afghanistan and what is going on over there. that was an opportunity to tell an indidual story. give ptu toern barris emotional life in that for or what its cing . is ero - was tough coming back. i will say that. it was a bigger challenge than i thought it would be. it takes -- i expected things would be difreut d anhings like that. that is something i experienced. for i do know -- that is my exrience overseas and coming ba. people a rllstung if this book can raise awareness about what people are going through, that is something. >> host: you are still a student at the unirsy of texas. >>ust gn y. >> host: as a first-time author what is your experience getting published? the hole hoopla surrounding it. it etng i exct.citing ierin h . i got a great agent fantastic to work with. a suprt system in place. it is a privilege that people might read something i have h yneooe ann insoth else? book of poetry? >> i have a book of poetry tha is more or less finished. i am finishing that up. and my second novel. just sort of in a very early e t w. hoisbaonr ta experience? >> guest: no. >> host: we have been working with kevin powers about his new novel "the yellow birds" based on his experiences in iraq and itomes r. >>rein antvi from booktv's recent trip to new york city for book expo america. the book industry's annual ade show. for more information visit book
