goes 2-2. a good job by george sherrill after giving the lead off single to get napoli to hit into that double-play. 4-8-1 for the angels. the orioles 6-10-0. they got ahead in the first inning of this ball game, and they never trailed. so dave trembley's team wins win one in a very tough place to pick on w for the orioles over the last five years here in anaheim. obviously we came in the other night, aftary five-hour trip, not have a day off. today looks like we participate little lack a daysicle yesterday, but got it together today. >> take me through the last at bat with a home run. . >> jim: well, he fave me two sliders. i could tell he was going to go after me soft, i got at slider and was able to handle it. >> amber: nice to see george sherrill get out there and get then save? >> has it been a while? >> amber: well, after what happened with the red sox to johnson and sherrill. >> well, that just happens every once in a while. he came out here and depositis the save today. >> amber: back to you guys. >> gary: thank you, amber. our coverage on masn begins at 8:30 tomorrow withor's extra, presented by at&t, followed by our game coverage at 9:00 on masn hd and wj st. i'm gary thorne. thanks for being it bus be everybody. this has been a masn presentation. the orioles get their first one against the angels on the season. now are now 1-3 against them. o's xtra, rick and jim have it. >> hi everybody, welcome in. it is o's extra, as the orioles bounce back and beat the angels tonight by a time of 6-4 to even up this series. on the pregame show tonight, you were talking about trying to get everything going together. the orioles seem to have probable troubling with that as of late, but today it was the timely hitting, and the o's hold on in the end. >> jim: >> i like when i see the or yeahs bunching up hits in innings. they get those three or four hits and a walk. that's when they're at their very best, because they put all of that pressure on the pitcherrer. he has to go right to the stretch right away, and they make mistakes. >> let's get a lock taste game recap. the orioles already had a 2-0 lead when augustin would come up in the third. a couple of runners on, and he didn't miss this one, this goes out to the bleachers in right field. >> 11th home run of the season, but also his 199th of his career. one away from 200, and it's a big one for the or yeahs, a three-run shot that puts them up at this point in the ball game. >> so a 5-0 lead. roberts running with to down, scores all the way from first base. i know you love that slide. >> i don't like that slide. much rather see brian hit the catcher, beat him up, bruise him a little bit, but at least he scored. >> it's a 6-1 game. one on and two outs, and david hernandez to morales to hits it out to cut the lead to 6-3. >> morales hits his 13th home run of the season. that's a pretty big shot. >> now, the 8th running, a man on. here is morales again. he sends it to the teamest part of the ballpark, and adam jones sends it for the out. >> was a little nervous right there, but after adam jones hauled it in, i knew the orioles had a food chance to win in this one. >> >> so six runs on 10 hits. the orioles had ad a 6-0 lead in this one before the angels started chipping back, to david hernandez gets his second major league win, sherrill his 18th save. and santana takes the loss. he's 1-4. morales had the home run, and a couple of rbi $. so david hernandez the orioles needed a solid start tonight. he pitched into the 7th inning. and when you look at a young pitcher, especially going through team that he hasn't seen,, of the thins you look for is line-up management. 6 and 2/8. allows three runs, walked only two. that's key. struck out two, that's okay, and the one home run, but it's what does he do as he goes through the line-up, in particular with men on base. now, let's go to the third inning, because i know you fit that he pitched out of this and really gave himself a chance to win, even this early in the game. >> well, he lived up to his billing don't. we talked about it before the game started, how well he pitches with men the scoring position. two men on base, and the angels putting pressure on hill, but goes to the sinker, gets the ground ball. almost a double-play right here, brian roberts gets caught offny wrong foot, but then again, gets the fast paul up. that's his pitch. he can make guys swing and miss, but they got a little of it right here. bobby abreu, another ground ball. works his way out of trouble with the sinker. just like bergesen. they can use that sinker whenever they like, but hernandez can also use the fastball up. the others can't do that. >> obviously he has a five-run lead, so a run here, run there that early in the game, maybe not as critical, but he was not only able to get out of it, they didn't even hit the ball out of the up field with two on and none out. >> that is out effective a sinking fastball can be. heat been a little unsteady so far this season, because he's not making real good pitches. his curveball, which dave schmitt tells me is one of the best curveballs in the organization, he hasn't been real sharp with it. tone it was real sharp. you heard palmer talking about that. so all of the pitches are starting to come together. you have to give these five, six, seven starts to these young guy, they start to settle in, and think they're all starting to come around a little better at the same time. >> sometimes the pitchers, at least the good ones, they know how to learn from that. now, as far as the hitting tonight, you sea the aubrey huff three-run home run. nick markakis went into this game as one of the few hitters in the line-up who has been swinging consistently well, and he kept that going tonight. >> he did. and when he gets deep in some counts, sees enough pitches, and then starts to benefit his swing because again, and you can't stop him. tonight a second time up, goes the opposite way. this is when the he's at his best. he gets one past hunter, doubles up right here. and now the orioles right off the bat are putting pressure on santana, who is struggled off the disabled list to get back into this groove, and they just can't do it when you keep inspect pressure on him. markakis ends up with two doubles on the night. >> i thought the other key to this game, in particular with a roarke you on the mound, the orioles get two runs in the first, and then the huff home run, but they get that add on run, and those are so important, especially on the road. that atmosphere in anaheim is a tremendous atmosphere, the any jills have a home field advantage, but to get up to 60- 0, to mitch that run was big. >> gary: well, it was big. scott gets he hit that gets the orioles on early the ball game. they almost missed that opportunity, and then scott almost hits another one out, another but bullet. you put the pressure on santana not to make a mistake, huff benefits the mistake pitch, hits it out of the ballpark, they're up 5-0. >> you just heard aubrey huff telling amber how difficults if for officer theme to go on the road live that, after losing a tough game, a long night. they have to play without a day off. we're going to head back to angels stadium now. gary to bring you gary's chat with the skipper dave trembley. >> jim and rick, thank you very much. we are hear with the skipper. it's all right, you can mile and, you won the ball game. >> i walked in here, you surprised me. >> gary: that's what die in life, i surprised people. how about the start tonight you got from david? >> impressive. impressive. you know, he kept throwing strikes. he used all of his pitches real well, you know, and we've been saying he's one of the few guys that, you know, he can get away with throwing that high fastball, and, boy, he pitched a great game tonight, he showed tremendous poise and kept repeating it. he thought his delivery was real quiet, very compact, repeated it, and that was a real shot the arm for us. >> and great to see the bats get going, especially earlier in the ball game, so you get a little confidence back at the plate? >> especially the guys in the middle of the line. you need those guys on the road, facing a big line-up. scott getting us going, but, you know, robert scoring all the way from first on that play, and wieters making a real good throw and getting the third out on a steal attempt. >> that was enormous, was it know it not, with abreu at the plate? that was the turning point of the ball game. >> also what it did, there would have been other goes coming up to the plate in the 9th inning. that certainly was key out. you have an out without the pitcher having to get it. >> dave, alf wades fun talking to you. >> oh, that was fun tonight. let's do it again tomorrow. >> i'll try to surprise you again tomorrow. >> i'll try to wear petter clothes. >> all right, jim and rick, back to you. >> hey, guys, try to cheer up out there. fairy thorn, you win a big game, it's all fun when you win. you knew that, you won quite a bit, didn't you? >> yes, we did. >> now their oh yells have a chance to benefit this road trip off to an outstanding start with two more games in anaheim before they head to seattle. david hernandez, who pitched a gem, as the skipper just said, 64%, aubrey huff 1%, markakis 18%. he's your at&t player of the game. when we come back, we'll look and the orioles line-up, which did break out tonight, as the birrs win in anaheim 6-4. ?รบรบรทรท >> well, aubrey huff's home run, his 11th, that was a big shot, gave the orioles, as gary just described, a 5-0 lead at the time. birds win 6-4. here are the top four hitters in each lineup. last night the angels dominated, going 6 out of 16, the orioles last night, 1 for 16. look at tonight. the orioles 6 for 16, a home run, four rbis, and all six runs scored, and the orioles pitching held the angels top four to 1 for 14 with a single by have is lad hire guerrero. the top four hitters set the tone. last night it was the angels, they go both it done. tonight was the orioles, they got it done and the orioles won. we're going to welcome in jim palmer. i have to ask you david hernandez, a guy like yourself who lifed on that high fastball. tell me what you thought about the young right-hander? >> well, i thought he pitched better than ervin santana, and that's what you try to do as a starter pitcher. if you had the advance scout are report, if you looked that's washington game, crowd say he didn't get this breakling ball over. well, tonight that it was not the case. curveball very good. fastball, he's not a great fastball, uses his change-up well. abreu, gets him to roll over right there with a changion, and right here fields his position. that was a lead-off out. you always like to get those. the only mistake as we see the really good curveball there was the pitch to mors in the 7th inning that he got up over the plate. so other than that, and maybe a hanging curveball for the double to rivera. but i think he threw 111 pitches, and you only make two bad pitches, but don't he outpitches his opponent who has had some terrific years, and then you get the early run support. that was huge. >> jimmy, some question why melvin mora asked out of the line-up yesterday. is it time to really start mixing in ty wiggington and giving melvin some more rest, maybe picking up the pace a little for him physically? >> well, you know, i hope not, that's not the case, but i think dave trembley when we talked to him before the game said ty is so hot, he's getting on base, hitting for power. you know, melvin is going through one of those droughts. the interesting thing, rick, is that even though he's not driving in a lot of runs, he's only had 52 opportunities, he's been able to hit, like, 340 with runners in scoring position. tonight he pulls a fastball down the line, right over the bag, and we all know that when melvin is pitching well, he hits the ball to right center, and the other thing is, if you're going to win and you want to have good pitching, you do know that he's an excellent third baseman. so the power numbers will most likely come. i think everybody has to remind themselves, last year when he got healthy, and he's been healthy purchase this year other than the hamstring, he had something like 48 -- or actually 57abied in 48 games. you know, a little more pressure on him this year, because the orioles do old hold an option. it's not a guaranteed contract for next year. we all know that he's been such an integral part of the baltimore community, so he certainly wants to stay there. but i would assume he's going to get a lot of playing time, because he's a very good player when he's healthy, and he's a very good player when he's able to produce. we've seen abreu for the angels believe drew nerve a lot of run, and you i don't always have to hit home runs, even though andinoary hit a couple last night. >> with melvin now batting 7th instead of 5th, with reimold moving up and melvin moving down. to me that adds even more than balance, because you just have to assume because of his track record, eventually melvin is going to drive in some big run, and in those number 7 hole, those could be big for a team. >> well, really could could be, and it's not like he's hitting .220 with runners in scoring position, anytime you're hitting .340 -- the only guy who has had a lot of opportunities is nick markakis. he came in with 88 at bats with runners in in score position. with mora, and you tonight hit a lot of home runs, you don't drive yourself in, and i think sometimes that because the difference, but if you looked at melvin last year, until the second half, the rbis were not coming as much, and then all of a sudden he had that freight second half. this is a guy that knows how i to hit. i think the one thing we've always had to deal with, defensor, you played until you were 42, i played until i was 38, you have to prove when you get into your late 30s if you're having an off year, i not because you're old, just because you had a slow first half and want to pick it up if you're going to change everybody's mind. >> did he just call you old? and that what i heard? >> jim: no, when we played. , we're definitely old guys now, come on. but the point is, when you get older at 42, and rick would tell you when he was 41, you have to prove that you can still play. and for melvin, i think that's really the trials and tribulations of being in your late 30s. >> all right, jim, we appreciate the insight. thanks so much for the visit. that's jim palmer joining us from abe jells stadium as the orioles bounce back tonight. it was david hernandez getting the win tonight, and another oriole progress process both who maybe is just a phone calling away had a big night in aaa. we'll look at the night of chris tillman as we come back. o's that game 5-0. bowie beats akron 3-2. frederick tonight on the road at potomac, and potomac wins it 6-5. aberdeen tonight won big, 10-1. and bluefield lost at home 4-2. well, in this game tonight, the orioles got a big performance out of matt wieters, rick, as hernandez left the game after a walk to figgins, and figgins as we know one of the best base stealers in the fame, and coming on was jim johnson, and the runner took off, and here was wieters, one of his best throws and the tag, and it got them out of an inning tell. tell me about the setup. >> it's his third very god throw to second money. more balanced than his used to. that face mask, maybe it would have to go, or they put a few tacks in it or something to keep it from crossing in front of his face, bought very good throw well, caesar was swinging the pat as good as we've seen him swing the bat when he first went on to the disablelinged list. even though he hits way town in the order, he cuss not strike out much, and puts the ball the may, and that's what you expect out of a very good defensive short stop. >> having a switch hitter in that number 9 spot a bonus. andino has done a good job, but izturis is the starter, and they hope to have him back for the series against the blue jays. rick and i each picked a player before the game. we have no idea who the other is going to pick, and we'll see who is going to be the player of the game, a play err who would stand out. i picked brian roberts, he picked melvin mora. two out of five with a double for mora. b. rob 1 out of five, and a terrific slide. and here is mora winning for rick, so rick goes up 3-0, and we are not going to hear the end of this. you had a feeling about melvin tonight, and europe right. >> jim: well, melvin always plays well against the angels. it doesn't matter who gets the game winner, as long as the get it. tomorrow night i'll pick b. rob, don't worry. >> i was still in the heated there with that terrific slide until melvin got that second base hit. so rick dempsey picked the player who is going to perform tonight. berken goes to the mound tomorrow for the orioles. tell us about jason berken. >> well, jason berken has really been struggling to get the ball down in the strike zone, and i think it's something he has to really concentrate on, but what might help him, as long as he has to throw so many fastballs when behind the the count is to start using his changeium more often. this is something he did in the minor leagues that helped him a lot. he has to get himself in a situation where that change-up can be effective. looking for his second win on the season. sean oh sullivan. they didn't know whether to put him in the bullpen or make him a start we are sob tonight they put matt palmer back into the bullpen. he's looking for his third win of the season. early in his career for the angels so far. >> it's kind of interesting what the angels have gone through this year. they had so many injuries if their rotation with lackey and says both on the dl to begin the year. they're now both back, and these youngsters have done a nice job, and it's kind of a nice problem for scoscia. >> i've got a a lot of respect for mike scoscia, i played with him for a long time, and i know that he has a great influence on the batters, wherever he go, exhibit doesn't matter what the names are on their back. once mike scoscia gets through with them, they become good, legitimate, major league players, ask that's one thing we is are to deal with. >> so tomorrow is game three in a four-game series. tomorrow it is an hourliarier, a 6:05 first pitch. orioles win it 6-4 to even up the series. for rick dempsey and our entire hard working grew crew, we'll six say so long, and look forward to see i i don't go back here tomorrow night. for more on tonight's game, get on the radio, or guess on-line at masnsports.com. we'll see you back here tomorrow night, everybody. รทรทรท@ >> a mix of boos and cheers. top of the first. first time up, a walk, and that would set up a five-run first inning for the dodgers. top of the second, manny grounds out to second. that play ends the inning. next at-bat for manny, top of the fourth, a 6-0 ballgame now, he will bounce out to shortstop. manny 0-2 with a walk in the ninth thus far. top sixth now. manny up with a runner on second. this time he will pop out to second. his night would end. juan pierre comes in for defensive purposes. ramirez 0-3 with a walk in his first game back from his 50-ing game suspension. -- from his 50-game suspension. >> this night all about manny ramirez. how did you feel? >> i was kind of nervous, not having played in two months but i didn't put a lot of things on my mind. i know it was going to be crazy, but thanks to the fans from l.a., they made it so easy for me to go and play. >> how did it feel in the clubhouse? >> it felt great. at first, when i was in triple-a in april, feel kind of weird, but once i saw all the guys and i got into the game mood, it was good. >> just to recap manny's night at the plate, he finished 0-3 with a walk before being pulled in the sixth inning for juan pierre. first inning he hits a walk. followed that with consecutive groundouts and a popout. eric young, how did you feel about the return of manny? >> with all the hoopla surrounding manny's return to the los angeles dodgers, you expected fireworks to happen. however, you saw a manny ramirez that was a little rusty from the layoff. he was very patient in the first at-bat. however, he became impatient and started swinging at balls out of the zone. we know the timing would be a little off, we know it will take probably a few days, maybe a week to get going into game condition. however, with the addition of manny back, the los angeles dodgers look like a stronger team and it will reflect on the players surrounding manny ramirez. >> thank you, eric, a marathon in minnesota, placido polanco, top of the 14th, he would single up the middle, gerald laird comes in to score, tigers take an 8-7 lead. they one at one point 6-0, and 7-1. bottom of the 14th, michael cuddyer, off the glove of brandon inge. joe mauer will score. game tied again. this time 8-8. top 16th now, that guy again, polanco. this time he will find the hole through a drawn-in infield. the tigers go up 9-8. they would add two more and hold on to win 11-9. detroit now just 2-4 this season against minnesota. marcus thames 2-5 with a home run. he came in his last four games hitting 1-13. delmon young in a losing effort, 3-6 with a home run. >> have you ever felt the weight of a nation on your shoulders? andy murray's answer is yes. this friday murray stepped onto centre court with the mission of becoming the first british man to reach the wimbledon final in 71 years. never mind that no home of this grown player has been crowned champion at the london grand slam since 1936. thousands of fans there to root for murray and against the american in front of him, andy roddick. both players coming out to centre court. this is what roddick had to say about dealing with the crowds. >> i'm just going to pretend when they say, "come on, andy" that they mean me. >> all right. let's go to the second set. roddick up a set. serving in the near court. after a short rally, roddick approaches the net with a dropshot -- the great passing forehand. he gets the break. goes up 1-0 in the set. murray up set point, strong serve. roddick can't handle it. he evens the match at 1-1. third set. 2-1 roddick. he has a break point, and murray's shot is long. roddick with the break. up 3-1 now. they weren't chanting "go andy" they were saying "go murray" for the most part but there were roddick fans there. here he was diving. cannot come up with the point. later in the game in the third set, long with the return, murray with the huge break to pull within 5-4. he's fired up. the set would go to a tiebreaker and set point for roddick -- the american, the approach on the backhand, murray's return finds the net, roddick up two sets to one. he's been in the final before, twice -- 2004 and 2005. lost twice to roger federer. there, murray taking a swing at the grass with his racket. match point for andy roddick. now, in the far court, murray on the run, and murray's shot would find the net. eliminated. britain's last hope in this tournament. roddick wins in four sets. he's in the final again. >> in recent years, it's -- i think overall it's certainly up there, playing a player of his rank, his caliber, and in kind of his atmosphere, and he's certainly in form going into the match and you know, i had to play my best tennis to win. >> i played well. you look at the stats, i've hit more winners, less unforced errors and more aces. i'm sure the points that we won were very, very similar. it just came down to a few points here and there on his serve, and he served really, really well. >> other semifinal, roger federer looking to pass pete sampras for all-time grand slam wins with 15. federer looking to be the first man to advance to a seventh straight wimbledon final since 1922 facing germany's tommy haas. federer won the first set 7-6, haas serving down 5-6 and the fed express with the impressive winner to set up a break point for the set. next point, five-time champion at wimbledon, this is why. haas missing long, shaking his head. federer would take the second set 7-5. go to the third. federer serving at 2-2, and haas scrambling to the net. hits the dropshot. watch as he puts his arm up subtly tries to distract federer and federer misses the easy shot. both players shared a laugh after the point. haas raising his arms right in front of federer. what a tactic. but it didn't last long after a double fault from haas, break point for federer and the man from germany sends his return into the net. federer serving for the match, next game, 40-0, federer match point, and that was it. lopsided win for federer. he's in the final again as well. >> i was really happy the way i played today. i came up with some good stuff when i had to, and it was a tough match, because tommy was playing well. i'm very proud of all the records i achieved because i never thought i would be that successful as a kid, you know, i would have been happy winning a couple tournaments and maybe collecting wimbledon and sort of achieving the dream scenario, but not really all those records, but it's quite staggering now, having reached, again, i think it's my sixed -- sixth straight grand slam final i've achieved as well, and having so many things going for me again, and opportunity, again tomorrow -- on sunday, it's fantastic. >> with his victory over tommy haas, roger federer becomes the first man in tennis history to reach 20 grand slam finals. breaking a tie with ivan lendl for the all-time record. if he wins wimbledon, federer can also break a tie with pete sampras for the most grand slam titles ever since the world number two laid claim to his first roland garros title last month, they are tied with 14 majors apiece. >> all right, michele, still to come on the diamond in boston we'll tell you what record of roger clemens tim wakefield put to bed. >> plus, rafael palmeiro, once suspended for steroid use, chasing rafi on the all-time homer list, got a little closer. >> free agency in full go, will the lakers be looking for a new coach?
