And wanted to see about trying to achieve something of rather than just roaming the streets but what it was like to be part of the program is intended to be graduates for their undergraduate work. With berkeley and Columbia University they did quite well for those that graduate go on to college post secondary and i think that is astonishing. While living in South Central the have the reputation to be a place of games and drugs in the impoverished communities so how they feel about coming home to this community so with all these problems and issues i set out to interview them but i realized that a certain age they cannot do anything had you feel we were doing . Find. So there is a methodology that is used but is a Grassroots Organization that everyone has the right to speak and we are not giving the of voice of the marginalized so they believed to give them a 5 a disposable camera at to document their life for those second interview cameras cited not want to tell them because i wanted it from their perspective in that was an amazing experience and ive learned from them. To say that was astonishing. They use a camera to tell their experience they saw things that i did not seek and had no sense of what was going on. Said to give them a camera they take the photos that i take them from them and i have them printed out i of the first to see the photos and i make statements of judgment from my middleclass perspective i started with the first photo when you look at it something is not clear and i did not trust them. The directors said it may not be a good idea to do this because they made that statement but a few new . So i will see if i can get something out of that. So i to get to a focus group and to the kids with the Railroad Tracks photo so i am sure the truth is that will have to take a photo but not at all. But the Railroad Tracks they said you could see them out of the getgo. But others who disagreed said dad is the other track is ugly. And i was astonished that i made that mistake often so they just snap the photos if there was nothing behind it but one girl was sitting in a large share issue was swelled and was taking a picture of the toilet in her school. And i thought here is another one. So i said why . And if she said look at what we have to put up with. Nobody cleans the said they played mitt on us. How interesting. Ive learned a lot from them and it was challenging the matter what they think to do so those who do not know them as these criminals who that there are in gangs during these kinds of things and i thought that was amazing that no matter how hard they work to take part in this program of those get no thugs the resonates so they had a chance to challenge that. This is the way we live in because of the gain members and according to the program they cannot associate and they will be expelled from the program so they got so much out of it they would not want to be seen the of the people next door or the gang members they nestorius of fears being in this community. But kids took photos at the back of the class. And then they could talk about the school that they attended. This seems to be one to present for the students but there was no pressure in teachers ceiling and the responsibility for setting up a good model. So why did you take that trip . He said that this. It is easy to go to. If you attend class ever dash will pass and what is interesting is there is the story of kids who dont want to become educated and not want to sit in the classroom and are deceptive they were upset they were not getting education. Look at that. Nobody cared for them. The teacher is the School System the cops dont care for them. How cops responded to their situation in the temptation with a garbage in the street so they start the society demanded that that was astonishing. Host where did you get the name of your book . I tried to pick up from people speaking to me i think that is more fascinating than what i could come up with. He said we live in the shadow and nobody knows we are here. Sunlight shows that nobody knows were here. So from here was a chance and an opportunity to say to the Larger Society that the get these kids that are stereotypes and sometimes they can be very harmful. Did with the Afterschool Program there were not having a problem with that stereotyped but its i an not like that. I come from a very nice fit the. So that is a great finding. Host what type of kids i am trying to remember black and latino there were more latino band black. I cannot think of the number but the coming from to read it to the environments here on campus with the Homework Center that is in hollywood is a different environment maybe they could intrude on their thinking about the community for them to have Something Different to say about their environment. Host what is the significance of university of Southern California to be here in this neighborhood . It is significant and whenever he was looking at that is how they felt how interesting a lot of them were of university that pictures of the buildings and of bookstore they took photos of anything that happened everything on campus was covered. I could not show many of them but they were so thrilled to be here. So for their feelings in she is 12 years old. Looked at me. They wanted to go and as my associates are maya assistant in the project for those who have graduated within a undergraduate program here. But she graduated from here. A want to go back to my community and help. The was safe and beautiful to be a respected with those who work with them it is so interesting. Host you use a term of hyper ghettoization. That is a term used with an article about the ghetto it was called the black ghetto of our loved. That is rising from originally. But it didnt seem to be that way there were gangs at the time but there was violence in the community in in in these communities they are more alive than ever. It has changed a bit, there is a lot of poverty your. Ended live next door and then add man came over and by father russo angry to say you cannot do this to me. Then the next door neighbor tried to give the sister drugs. They had to deal with is constantly. Was much more blatant you can see it much more than when i was growing up in the ghetto. Host to the kids have to apply . Said teachers recommend them. But what is interesting is they are not taking students that have peyser bees because they have programs for them but the students who have seized but the teachers said they could do better. And it seems to have to do extra work and one of the kids said i dont think my teacher likes me they make me go to this program now i have to do more work. [laughter] we laughed a lot. Sova have to do work after school. So for you to have a great experience you like this said teachers will care for you and then to do more work host as a sociologists what have you learned about Public Education . In this particular community most of the schools are failing and what we talked about earlier there were pictures that they thought and one of them that they thought and that this is probably the favorite teacher. And then they have the pitcher and the students said this is not the teachers name. I dont like him and i asked him if i could take his photo for my studies and he said no. You cannot take my picture he said but i want to take it with sabre rigo in your hands. Are you out of your mind . So he is riding on the board in a pose like the perfect teacher. Like those who were on campus in those in the community and to volunteer for the resonate but then they come back to tell me and say these children are really great ben to say could reduce a after class . And i have to do things when i sat back and thought about the School System here to think it is such a failure some are 40 or 50 kids. So they are not funded well and they are fat feeling of place and look at the larger issues about the excellent teachers but i get combat pay. So then to step back and realize it isnt the teacher either purpose theyre overwhelmed. Just everything that happens to impact the school. And to talk but having substitute teachers but tuesday i was in his class scientist teetering. And then there is no background but news and good for the students. Souders of the teachers are the schools fault why isnt the system not working . It isnt funded well. So the schools are not funded and then Beverly Hills high is publicschool but surely with the same kind of funding but it consists of middleclass parents so one thing they do is fundraising. That the parents grave raise 40,000. So i know that they can afford to do that so within the public system and that is not happening in the schools. It is and the teachers fault with those get both drugs theyre angry or hungry theyre obligated to get them breakfast the parents dont have enough money to buy breakfast but then it is unfunded wall. Host have you conducted this experiment again . Not yet my presentation was saturday they said come to my school. Sly will go allout to see what is going on. With this dangerous environment. Host what you mean . Like that hyper ghettoization theres a lot of things going on. If theres problems with the kids from the own community from middleclass and is a publicschool remembering of what might send to go and not let him to go but here we are. Watch out. The photo on the front . To make this is the one i was talking about. And here is the kid taking the photo. To say it is no way out. I remember talking to one of my colleagues i never would have thought of that. But i would just think i have to take the picture still make it challenging vaster type that kids want to be cared for there are not finding that in their community they dont blame their parents but the adults are the authority with the educational system so they blame the institutions and most of them said many who work all day or allnight and he said no because my parents are always working
