He was never here to help me. The way he expresses love is much less verbally. Im a talker as you probably can tell. Its been there. Its spending time. Its playing. Its working over a drama monologue or a music lesson or throwing a baseball. I think having the father express, this is so important to me, this is something my father didnt do and i really wanted to do, is telling the sun this is something very valuable. This is a part of life i dont want to miss out on. Thats again and again what is a price most is not that i left the state department but i didnt put myself up for the job in 2012 because i didnt want to miss those last years with our children. The point being i think its for your husband to find a way to be a leader in expresses pleasure. I was a as we passed those ads, et cetera, the work were talking about here, whether its pushing for policies in emails and calls, et cetera, are raising a lot of it ends up on us as people and as to what youre saying, when you pass those ads saying we used to think a lot about saying a doctor msha was always a man, but it could be a woman, too. And delete parent, whatever, is a woman but it could be a man just as well. And eventually we start to see that changing and madison avenue and ancestral. If you open the economist, it was two weeks ago, with a big twopage ad from united bank of switzerland that shows a banker saying am i a good father . You turn the page or you turn the page and it says can have it all . Okay, something is starting to change. I think we are about with a question right over here. Go ahead. Im a reporter with the huffington posts. Postspent im sorry, your reporter . Okay, were going to wrap. I always wanted to do that. Its a personal issue for me really. So youve talked a lot about policies. You talked a lot about policy needed to change so that women can advance in their careers, but it seems to me like you need to have women as policymakers. So how do you break that were its them in making the decisions and they dont really think in the same way that women do . Can i Say Something for one second . Look, i think the more women we have is better, 100 . Clearly i think that. All of the statistics bear that out but its not 100 . This isnt a women main issue. We pushed successfully for terrific program that helps you meet some of the needs of homeless and runaway kids in the city, most of whom were lgbt. At the time this happened there were three or four, a number more than a never before lgbt councilmembers. It was not pushed by any of us. It was pushed by Council Member who represented brooklyn. Not only did he not need this to get elected, but he ran for reelection people send out mail attacking him for wasting money on those kids. So it is better but dont want us to think its an absolute at all. And weve never had any successful human or Civil Rights Movement in our Society Without allies. I do want to take a moment before annemarie asks a question to thank all the allies out there at all of the different movements because that is critical. Sorry. [applause] i will second that and say that were not very many women in a generation ahead of me so i owe my principle mentors women. But heres what i would say. I think our secret weapon your army with the daughters. Men with the daughters. Men who have invested a great deal in their daughters, im sure your father is proud of you, and suddenly they start seeing the world through the lens of why cant my fabulous daughter be just as good or better than any of those guys in her class . Why cant she do this . They are often much more willing to say lets experiment with something different. Because we are looking at it and thinking about it in terms of what that would mean to allow their daughter to advance as much as anything. That is something that, in the book i talk a lot about how you would talk to your boss, how you approach this. Theres a lot more specific advice but if you think aside from good man who believed in the quality and music only want things to change themselves, and men with the daughters are the place i would look first. We are going to have to wrap up. I just want to thank everyone for coming. Want to thank you for hosting us. I want to thank annemarie slaughter for having made what should not have been a brave decision was a brave decision and then made the more brave decision to talk about it and write about it and write this book about it. And i would encourage all of you to buy as many of his book as possible. One, he goes on like annemarie, but number two, whether we like it or not, the significant at this debate will be judged by how many books she sells. I like that. And get your Holiday Shopping off to a good start by buying any man you are worried about in your life come if these not quite where he should be, by him the book and make Annemarie Wright a particular note to him at it tonight. So lets give annemarie you are the best ever, thank you. [applause] and where are you physically going to be met with the book . Over there. Following annemarie. Thank you, thank you. [inaudible conversations] is a look at some books that are being published this week. 1963 was the key your of civil rights when the southern christian Leadership Conference were moving to the south. The major demonstrations in birmingham, many of kings kings supporter and king himself had been arrested in birmingham after being sick done by the racist Police Chiefs all and fire hoses. Jackson called and said to reverend franklin, we have to help them. Why dont you hold a rally in detroit . So franklin started to organize a rally. He was not particularly popular among the established, the black establishment in detroit. It was considered too flamboyant, too controversial. The black Ministerial Alliance try to depose him from leading the march of several times. But it all proceeded in the end. Even the naacp opposed it at first, which in revisionist history they would like to not acknowledge today. But it all started to come together. The mayor of detroit then was a liberal Irish Catholic named Jerome Cavanaugh who had been elected in 1961 largely because of the africanamerican vote. His commitment was trying to change detroit from its unfortunate history of racial violence and tension in the years before he was elected, very good a lot of confrontations between the police and africanamerican communities. Attentions with all the way back to world war ii when in 19431 of the largest race riots in American History happen in detroit. When many africanamericans were coming up to work in the factories as were whites from appalachia in the south, and that tension filled two bytes over housing and jobs. One of the sore points in detroit history which 20 years later have a was trying to overcome. One of his first moves as me was to appoint a Progressive Police commissioner george edwards, who had been trained at the United Auto Workers as a progressive labor person, who had been active in detroit politics for a long time, and whos on the michigan supreme court, had persuaded to resign from it to take the job as police commissioner. The single idea of trying to improve Race Relations in detroit. So edwards met Martin Luther king at the airport when he came for the rally, and his first words were, you will find no police dogs or poses here. Detroit was embracing king. They went down to Near Wayne State University with a staging area for the rally and it was amazing. Ever 150,000 people gathered on woodward avenue. Marching down eight lanes all the way downtown to the hall where king delivered his first public major iteration of the i have a dream speech. He was walking or in arm with walter, the great labour leader of United Auto Workers who had really been a baker for the Civil Rights Movement that summer. It was his money that failed most of the demonstrators out of jail and earning him. He would later help him find the march in washington. This is two months before the march on washington. And king in detroit is living the i have a dream speech their first and it is being recorded by barry gordy of motown records, his first spoken word record. Unfortunately for detroit, although not perhaps unfortunately for the nation, everything was overwhelmed by what would happen in washington too much later. Wardys record of the detroit i have a dream speech was actually released on august 28, 1963 but nobody was paying attention because king was delivering i have a king speech in washington. And a rally in washington was larger than the one in detroit so it was basically completely washed out of history, but it happened in detroit first.
