The extraordinary step of the Nixon Library is standing here with microphones. Who has a comment . Right behind you. Thank you so much for coming out. You know, not necessarily a question, but im up until now i will read your book hopefully forever. Ive been very cynical. These are rough times and you wake up everyday, youve read the books, it gets even rougher and you dont know the way out. So thank you very much for putting a book like this out. Thank you. That makes my night. And thank you for reminding me, i was going to ask i forgot to mention, friends, i have been lucky, friends, its my seventh category. I go back to John Phillips at the age of six. I can go through my best friend in my high school years, i know them all. In college, a whole bunch of other people. I can tell you right now whether its a bud or gary or image or any number of people who are my friends over the past many years, ive been lucky and friends. My closest friend is a guy named bill who sadly worked for the l. A. Times all those wasted years, but i was going to ask you if youre cynical, do you have very Close Friends . Very Close Friends of cynical . Yes. You seek him this is important. I was out last night with bud the contractor who i talk about on the raiders all the time because he is the most upbeat guy in the world. So whenever i get that cynical about politics, i go find one of those encouragement machines come with a noncynical people because if all you do is read politics and watch fox news, you can switch your proverbial wrist in this country, im telling you. Yes, sir. What is the speed you have to explain that. I have listened to his show, how long, 18 years . I began july 10, 2000. All right. Happiness took a serious hit the last few weeks ago when was ordered to be dismantled, and even though we have three months, or 100 days to appeal the hot, i started thinking, theres Something Else at work. Theres got to be money involved to get the aclu is representing some people, but wheres the money coming from, are they paid when they filed the suit on a constitutional issue . It depends upon the kind of see. Attorneys fees are available in a number of circumstances depending on the statute and the form under which they are soft. I do not believe they will receive attorneys fees in the injunction. But the aclu does receive a lot of these. Fakes receive an extra amount of the nation. I talk about the Alliance Defending freedom because it is the aclu believers. They been fighting the case for years. My colleague at Chapman University school of law has been doing that for years. Get involved and let me tell you, on march 25 of this year in the hobby lobby case, they are the most important religious freedom cases of the last 30 years that will redefine free exercise and maybe even the establishment clause in the united states. And if you are praying, people pray for their success, if youre contributing people you can contribute. The war on faith is advanced and this is the epic battle, it was a bad one and if we lose hobby lobby, we have lost a great deal. I dont know how you get it back. And so focus on that and perhaps support the Alliance Defending freedom in the interim. Im happy by nature. Good. Your first happiness was generosity, and this young, beautiful lady in front of me, linda, i had to give her my book because of what you said. Spirit that is perfect. Great talk. Enjoyed it a lot. Thank you very much. That is perfect. [applause] i would just be happy if you bought another one last night. Bought another one. [laughter] i happened to watch the cspan, and thats how they knew about you. And cspan icollege a radio show a couple weeks, last week. And i really enjoyed your radio show. Thats how you about tonight. I came your and others and you just now. You make me feel happy. So thank you very much. I just want to say that. Thank you. And that allows us to do a shameless plug for brian lamb and cspan. And i may be argued that the other day, i dont know if brian lamb has won the medal of freedom yet which is the highest civilian honor but he invented cspan and he is done for authors more we would not have the book industry we have, we would not have the opportunity is with that, ive only been nervous three times in my life. As nervous as when it went on stephen colbert, sweating bullets and he was very nice to me because i didnt try and out funny stephen cooper. I was nervous when interviewed Julie Andrews because it was mary poppins, and then i was nervous with brian lamb because hes the best interviewer in america. Sure enough, he was terrific. Thank you for coming tonight. Appreciate it. [applause] i am also a Cleveland Browns fan, and their gpa is an. Is a time to let them go . No. No, absolutely not. They last won in 1964, i do not remember. I went to every home game from 1965 when my dad got season tickets through 1974 when i went to college. Ive had these season tickets since, and honestly, really honestly think weve turned the corner. We have five pro bowlers, 10 draft picks in the dress. Were going to get Johnny Manziel or dr. Carr, a great quarterback, josh gordon is extraordinary. We got the best cornerback in the league. You must understand that important ago the bigs and put all the money you have on the browns winning the super bowl next year. [laughter] thank you for a nice talk, enjoyed it. I would put myself in the happy category. I was wondering based on research and work you put him in writing a book, have you discovered any traits between peoples as to why some people can easily be happy for life, and we all have things in her life that can interfere with that but generally happy, and people who go through life not being happy . Im going to give you my completely honest answer, but preface it by saying that this is not an absolute impediment to changing, but i think im happy parents produce unhappy children. And if you dont have parents when my good friends, richard mckenzie, wha one of the greatet teachers at university of californiairvine and the author of the homecoming, which raised were the happiest people i know. This orphanage was a very happy place. They worked with his hands all the time. Is a big advocate of orphanage, so he didnt have parents but hes a very happy person. I think if you have a negative, dysfunctional, terrible family with addiction or pain or abuse, it is hard to get started on the road. I dont think its impossible because i have met many people who have recovered from that, recovered from other things, terrible things, i write about aa and the happiest life and how theyve regained so many lives and that of the great good fortune to send a number of people to terrific sponsors who have guided into the program. But if you got happy parents, there is a very good chance you are going to be happy. Very good. So i think thats the great distinction character. So parents are to remember that, kids are always watching every day, every day. I appreciate you. I listen to you. I appreciate your educating us as to the people to vote for and contribute to and other states. I think thats really important. This is a test. Who have i been pushing the most this year . Tom cochran. Tom cochran. Com. Right. I like relationship with john kimbell. Im a usc fan but i dont but other than that im glad you have them on the show. I have a question space i was going to get to the whole thing without bringing up usc. And my question is, why is there such terrible reception on this station . I lived [applause] in the laguna. Whether im in l. A. Or wherever i am, heres this Diverse Program of want to hear and they can do anything. Especially when you get off at lake forest and you start driving day or night come in my house, on the radio in the car, im going crazy. I answered this question all over the country. No matter how strong a signal, no matter how wonderful the station, and it didnt upon when you leave the reach of a signal and the signal is a directional and it is a day timer, which means the moment the sun goes down, they have to turn down the power. So every night you will be going along listening to the hugh hewitt show and there are some bands that arrived right about is the station south of the Mexican Border that is not governed by the fcc that steps are signal out to live in a. I thinking about this weird but we cant invade mexico over my station. Although we could invade mexico over my station, but thats what it is. So thats the problem. My name is noel parish. Spent and the spouse of cloud parish who will make a terrific county assessor. Thank you. One thing no one has mentioned that you love about you is your life. Heres my question. I love the Republican Party and its in my blood. Give me a snappy answer to say to republicans when they say theyre unhappy with Republican Party. They are always fighting with each other. Well, its hard with the truth, i to discover like a circular firing squad. A snappy answer is, wouldnt winning be a lot more fun . Because it would be in fact, it is counterproductive. Im trying to negotiate a truce tonight between two great conservatives, in fact, during the show and afterwards two great conservatives are at odds with each others at odds with each other. The art in of targets to shoot at the judge issued a difference . Ronald reagan, i did a broadcast from the reagan ranch on the 20th anniversary of believe it was of the tear down this wall speech, and its just a wonderful place. It just infuses you with a sense of reagan and he was always and everywhere a brilliant and hapy and upbeat and he also played in the 11th commandment, and i wish we could reinstall that time, for one more question. The you know why, how some children with the holocaust did not have parents are happy parents are happy surroundings come to say the least and went through such horrors came out with no bitterness and happy disposition . And i know some of them. There are. In fact, great story. I can tell in my book. Im going to tell the story. When i go to las vegas i play poker, badly. And they usually lose. I play seven card draw, its a fascinating and im interested in it. And i play the low stakes table. Sitting there one night late, across the street from caesars, i can remember the name of the hotel, its a pink one, and they still run a traditional card flamingo. They dont like Texas Hold Em what you dont like. I like traditional seven card poker. I go over unemployed. Im sitting there, seven at the table and theres a few. And in roles a guy in a wheelchair this is 15 years ago so he was 60 and 15 years ago. He pulled in and he said, great day, isnt . Why would you say that . You havent won a hand. And he rolled up his sleeves and it was a number from the camp, ma and he said every day is a great day. Im alive, lets play. I thought that was unfair actually because how are you going to take the money from him at that point . You teams over threes, youre just not playing, but it was a great testament, a great story and i wish id taken the time i wasnt yet on the radio or it would have gotten his name 10. But Dennis Prager had a holocaust survivor on the other day it was a super salesman in downtown los angeles. Hes the most happy fellow and i think theyve learned, and i asked dennis the last time we did, then is, ma why are jews so happy, so funny . And the the, thats a silly question and he said no, its not. Its a very good question. Thats why i do what i do and what you do what you do. He said its because suffering produces good humor, and a sense of appreciation for winter isnt something. I think thats probably the answer. On that note, thank you for coming. Ill go out and sign books. Thank you, jonathan, and the Nixon Library. [applause] come on, want to thank you and i want to thank all of you for coming out tonight. You all know we we have some great office chair, and its not the extent of honor with a lavish hotels with some of them but its the price is gets we provide them. I want to give one to hugh. This is a what would nixon to mug. This is number one in a series of about 50. Theres about 5000 available in our easy mister. Please but when the.
