There was a lot of people thinking very creatively out how you take our ability with Technology Make it work for. Not being unemployed and poor, but Reform Society said that that is to an improved to just a handful of investors and monopoly firms, but the call for all their spirit thats a question where to take a position because there is no reason this has to be our Worst Nightmare for everyone unemployed giving each other right in our cars. This has to be an opportunity to transcend limitations and go places where everyone can let the extraordinary that, not just a few. I want to turn it over to my partner and fellow author, john nicole. [applause] wow, i am told off did this wrong. I hope i got it right. This is the power of cspan as opposed to collect this year. Hope is strong. Thank you so much for coming out tonight. I am absolutely delighted to be with all of you folks. I am delighted to be in an institution named for emma goldman. [applause] brothers and sisters, if there is anyone who couldve let us out of this wilderness, it was probably emma goldman because she told us the first thing we have to think about us one another rather than those folks at the top because there is nobody at the top thats going to be watching out for us. This is a fundamental understanding of the book that half an eyebrow. We were inspired to write this by an odd phenomenon in our life. Our previous book did pretty well in america and have academic interests, led to the formation of movements for immediate requirement help feed into democracy movements. In america, are books that tended to be treated as todays manuals are a little bit of reference for those on the out side trying to get in. In europe, we had a different experience. A member of our folks were treated as instructive for those who were in power. They wanted to have discussions about what would happen if we lost journalism, if the literally died out, what would happen if democracy was severely diminished me about what happened if we didnt navigate constitution guaranteed free and open election and absolutely made sure that our vote mattered more than a handful of peoples money. We got invited to these conferences in europe and theyre fabulous. They have some of the best. It was very good. Everybody trusted nice to in some of the places we went to have swamped in the lakes around them. So we felt welcomed. Media and democracy and a whole host of other issues. Typically these conferences after a spell, a spell, i would sit back and listen to everybody else be to see the nature Tech Companies come in ahead to think tanks in places like oxford, some of the most powerful people in the world including the biggest thinkers in the area of technological incident. Top experts on Artificial Intelligence in the digital revolution and not a nation. These were incredibly smart and able people and many of them were very pleasant to hang out with. However, in in their remarks, but i was struck by was how often they talk about implementing new technology that would get rid of a lot of jobs. Not just we are going to be more efficient here for more efficient they are. No, theyre talking about the elimination of whole industries, literally transformation of our society. Everyone said the spirit is no one who didnt pay this, that its going to be a bigger deal, more transformational than the First Industrial revolution, which took us from Northern England to people from an Aquarium Society into manufacturing and the second Industrial Revolution we saw play out so much in the United States and of the development of fact to recount from new england all the way through the great lakes, all the way out across america, dan places like baltimore. They said what was going to happen is going to be so much bigger than that. It struck me that if somebody covers politics full time, who works in the thick of american media, who writes for news papers and magazines and even appears now and again on television, i didnt hear anybody talking about this. I didnt hear our media say tonight we are not going to devote the whole show to a discussion of Donald Trumps hand. Tonight we are going to talk about with their children or grandchildren are going to have jobs. I didnt hear them say well, tonight we are not going to talk so much about what nickname donald trump has given to marco rubio appeared tonight we are going to talk about how we organize a fair and just society in which our traditional jobs are no longer there and what we the people will do to live out the rest of our lives. Didnt hear that. As i covered for 2012 campaign. We have a Permanent Campaign in america. As i covered that and moved into this campaign, i didnt hear a single political leader in the speech on the technological changes taking place. So what i realized was that we have a bizarre discussion going on in America Today. We have an elite discussion about a certain line, where everybody is saying on what is going on. They know all about it. They share the information in the report and look at whats going on and implement the changes. This type of the ice age we live in the future. This isnt something coming 10 years from now. How many of you have heard of kodak . Well, there you go. Even some of the younger people in the crowd effort of kodak. The company synonymous with photography in america. Everything we knew about pictures. Kodak in 1988 at 145,000 employees in the United States. 145,000 employees. Largely used nice. Very, very good jobs. It held up whole cities. It was the heart and soul of all American Cities and the Research Departments that were fabulous. Research departments actually developed technologies they use to take pictures with their phone. They use the pictures over to your computer. They did all this incredible work and they kept putting money back in the research, back in the community. 145,000 not a period in 2012, kodak what row. They were bankrupt. Sad story to death of an american and a pair of one of the companies that really did a lot to undermine kodak, to take technology and put them into other forms of. Companies like snapshot you different operations have come up. In 2012, one of the Major Companies was sold. The same type of kodak was going to write. They sold for a billion dollars because these new tech giant to come up with ideas. They buy the companies that compete with them and they bring the ideas and to make sure the competition doesnt exist. This company got facebook. A billion dollars. They had to reveal how many employees they had. 13. 25, 30 years ago had 145,000 employees did not have them unionize doing great research, putting money into communities. It is wiped out by companies that employ it hurts people. Im sorry im not that good with math, but i believe that our future is getting rid of companies that employ 145,000 people at good wages and replace them with come as that employ 13 people, that trajectory doesnt look good for a lot of us. You ask yourself, where did all the work zero . How can i work be done. Does anybody here have a cell phone . Do you go. Will you do when you take a picture . You take it. And i use isaiah, edited. Now you send it on. You do the work they used to be done by all sorts of other people did its been put down and your phone. Thats the future. Heres the interesting thing. You do the work and redistribute wealth of todays companies so effectively youre paying them for the opportunity to do the work and they collect your data and sell it to other companies and give it to powerful people to manipulate how you live your life. On balance, this is not the best calculation for building a future and yet we will see this across the board. That is not the past. That is now. So when people try to ask buying a 2016 president ial race, all this time i hear pundits on television, and they go i dont get this. Why are people so a three . Why is it such a volatile electionyear . Why are the peoples revolting . Theyre not grateful and all the great and its happening. The stock market was set today. Isnt everybody happy about that . Billionaires are richer now than theyve ever been. Isnt everybody happy about that . We have that group about the line. On the very wealthy people talking about the future. In a line down here that we put the politician and our media. We never talk about it. They never get serious about it. We live in the middle. The weird thing is, even though there is that line above us, we have actually heard some of this. Weve seen some of this. We know we dont have the job that we did have. We know many Older Americans have been put out of one job vehicle with nation, another via automation. Young people have grown up marinated in technology. They know the potential of these new technologies. The fact of the matter is that people are having thoughts and discussions that are deeper than our media or our politics. If you want the explanation, if you want to know why young people are showing up at Bernie Sanders rallies and why they are not authored by the word socialism, i dare not other guy an alternative for the capitalism they know ,com,com ma its because they actually see the future a whole lot more clearly than our political and media elite care to discuss. If you want to know why 58yearold man shows up in a donald trump bradley, somebody has been laid off from their auto job, then we train to work in a warehouse. After that, you know, replaced by a robot working over at the quiktrip by the gas station. That is why hes there. I know i media will tell you everybody in a donald trump bradley, we dont understand them. We dont know whether this into the night. We dont know why they would find anything appealing to them. I share that view. I am no fan of donald trump. The fact of the matter is the slogan is make America Great again. Returned again is opposite in that phrase. Hes running around, promising people to take back before all these changes take place. Bernie sanders slogan as a future you can believe them. This offer is theres going to be a lot of change, but at least it would be humane. Lets move beyond the politicians. Lets move beyond the parties. Lets move beyond our failing media and failing political system in under an these people showing up at these rallies, these people voting in ways that are destabilizing and shaking a our politics are responding to realities the coming increasing burdens on their lives. The only question we have is his comment is this the last election of the 20th century for the first election of the 21st century . That is what we are sorting out right now and its really unsettling and released gary because times like these could be a better way than kerry. What we tell you in the book is times like these have occurred before. We have been wrenched out the existence is we know and for us to experience radical on battling economic social change and we have struggled with it and it not been easy. We have seen our way through. Best example historically and in our book we resurrect a group of people and make them heroes. Best example is at the start of the night teen century in the north of england. Has anybody ever been to the north of england . A few of you. Did you ever go to a village . Villages has a churchyard in its green and its a pleasant land. Most people lived in villages like that. They were incredibly talented. They knew how to make things that folks wanted to buy. They made clothing and different pieces about you see and they have their children around them. They had decent lives and industrialists came along and said he know what, we could make a whole lot more money if we got all these people at the villages and put them in cities and let them live in slums and without the work of William Blake described a dark satanic mills. From before dawn till after nightfall, working on the machinery and making clothing and their children were forced to work with them. The existence was being destroyed and they understood the destruction was not in their interest. It wasnt even in the interest of their craft. Credibly wealthy people wanted to increase the wealth of people but not to do anything for the great mass of humanity. So we treat them today as backward. We use the term to talk to somebody who doesnt know how to use their phone. There is some of the most industrious in reading people of their time if they didnt like the economic changes taking place and they went into fact juries and wrecked the machine. They destroyed the machine. A guy named cap in the spring. They have had as an imaginary characters so strong it was one swing of his hammer. He could destroy one of those machines in the dark satanic mills. They didnt have a forgiving attitude towards the wealthy and powerful. They would drag the owners out, put them on it and try them for crimes against humanity. The British Government was not impressed. We ride in the book when the british were fighting napoleon and all the great wars of europe, industrial technical changes is almost as link to militarism to a strong government using military force. The incredible thing when they went to work, sometimes after nightfall, even on full moon nights in england they would gather down country lanes and form clubs to discuss their circumstance. They gathered that they could walk, sometimes miles they had to go. Even though they were being worked literally to the hand of their endurance, they continue to talk and struggle. First the machines are enemies. We have no power we arent even in the process. They began to transform that anger and passion into a radical democracy movement. People died in the name of this movement. They demanded universal suffrage. Everyone can though. Competitive election. They responded to them and their success was so great that it ushered in the rise of the trade Union Movement. It ushered in child labor laws, and made our day, transformation of work like perfection but wrestled with all of these changes and they made themselves a part of the shaping of the future. That only happened in england. Now, that is the history of what happened in america with our Industrial Revolution. At this time is that an update 70s, 80s and 90s, they would literally kill. Children were taken in the worst of it is. It was a horrible, dark time and not of that became a populist movement. We had little success. The Progressive Movement opened up democracy and elected u. S. Senate, both for women, transformational politics that then lead the next step ultimately when the economy crashed down because it was inhumane and did not work well if Franklin Roosevelt came to power. He ushered in reform that radically changed the very nature of our economic life. He said that those who acted to giving people the power of their Economic Future. The economic democracy that it does wanted to push the people back once more, i welcome their hatred. Because he said this is a revolutionary battle against economic royalist on, as evil and dark as anything the luddites had to battle the north of england. Fact of the matter is again and again through history when we have technological change that made our lives assuming, response has been to organize power. Dont be against technology. Not going to get you anywhere. The future is coming. Dont even imagine you can talk some billionaire into giving up his unimaginable wealth so you can have a little piece of it. Understand this. Those who control our economy today, those are at the top of things, they believe they can eliminate the jobs that we know and you will come together in existence, driving your car down the street to the duty in the middle tonight, trying to find somebody can pick up and give a right to. Take room in your apartment, cobbling together bits and pieces of a broken up economy, given enough money to get by. And then using that money to buy a new iphone. They are pretty sure he would keep redistributing wealth upward for a long, long time to come as your fist and gives darker and more satanic. There was another figure 200 years ago and ill conclude with him. He becomes the hero of our book. Lord byron was one wealthy and powerful person who took a cause. The irony bad in a debate in the house of lords at the point at which those who had been displaced and dispossessed began to understand this struggle as they were in was when they realized the hard work of the industrious poor was a far less can turn to the powerful and the enrichment of the hand of a man. That is the fundamental blunders tanning with which we began. And when we know that, we understand that we must replace those are the skit night to those who are making decisions about our Economic Future and we must put ourselves at those tables. If we dont make a fundamental political change now in this time, that our children and grandchildren will be doomed to an existence dramatically less than it should be. But if we do make that change, if we make that change, we realize the promise of every great in there and every great thinker throughout his jury. In our book we read about tesla and edison and einstein and what did they say when new technologies were developed . They said the plane of the technologies is to free people from treachery. What did they say about the point of moving forward and progress . This is human beings could work less and enjoy life more. Others insist it is, are not false promises. Those were promises that were made and they were real. We can work less and enjoy life more. We can have a civil and Humane Society in which we are creative, in which we have time for children, time for a community. It can work. But it cannot work if we let the promise of technology be locked up in the hands of a handful of very wealthy people. It can only be worked if we embrace the promise of technology and say this is going to be our future, not tears. People, get ready. Theres a change coming. You dont need money to get on board, but you do have to get on board because the future is not going to be shaped by someone else. Its going to be shaped by s. Thank you. [applause] do you go. This woman up front can be heard the deceased and microphone. I dont think youre a passionate enough. The truth of the matter is bob and i had another book project we were working on. As we begin to get into this discussion about these issues, as we begin to see what was coming, we tore up her tore up our boat. We tore up the project and contacted her publisher is that we want to do something very different to our great blessing, our great luck, our publishers to go for it. This is an act of passion. We believe this discussion if we can open it up, we can transfer in the future every bit as much as every technological advancement. There is never going to be any technology that is more transformational than the power of the people for me. On that note we will open up the conversation. Because of the logistics of tonight, we are going to leave the microphones here. Max, you can come on a good happy to start happy to start the conversation. Im going to start with what was said earlier about his collegiate experience, which is very similar to mine. I worked in a Grocery Store for five years that an engineering degree. I was paid 1. 75 an hour and i could pay off my costs. Ill cost of education when i left. As you were speaking, i was thinking of king george, bush the first elected. People dont buy the story. Hes never seen one of the scanners before. He did not know this. It was just ask linda ham. I wont even talk about his son. What i really wanted to go to the site of think a lot of limits room understand what they are facing today with this economic burden if youre trying to get an education. Right now a High School Degree is almost used lisp are getting a type of david can live on that bring you a living wage. I have a masters degree in that not helping a lot either are not looking for anything. The other issue i wanted to put on the table that you both talk about was today we had 60 of our federal budget Discretionary Spending good militarism. We noted before, but we sent it in more detail but the overriding concern is framers had a lot of problems in the book. A couple things that were really strong on. One of them was a session to limit in our society. Militarism was being that was the most fundamental thing that would undermine republican or democratic rule. Madison can call this continual warfare she shared about problems that destroy you. For that reason we have two amendment in the bill of Rights Holding antimilitarism amendment to make it very hard for people with continual warfare. He did what is called the four freedoms of 1942 related to the second bill of rights. He said people have to have the right to not live in fear of constant warfare of militarism. Thats something we have to eradicate to have a healthy society. Truer words have never been written. History bears that out. Given the place we are now with militarism and technologies we have is all the more important. We purchased this briefly in a boat had one of the ways that even sanitized now if theyd made up robotic and animated so fewer human beings are killed receiving other matter. Its not the same price to be paid by a country to go blow another country if they can do about a nation. But that is only can happen if people in charge of a lot of what taking place, a lot of that change are interested in addressing the crisis that becomes natural to their word. That again is only going to happen if we democratize the process. We talk about a lot today data. We talk about big business. But we talk little about big democracy. The fact of the matter is its going to take big democracy to do with these problems. It is not just a liberal democracy. It also has to be economic aid. We have to give people a role in defining their Economic Future. That is how we begin to address Climate Change. Its also how we address the job of the future. As you move towards fewer jobs, there will be political jersey, long and they will say, i know slowed the childs problems. All we have to do is bring the planet. They will tell you if we can just dial down our response to Climate Change a little bit. If we can back off on addressing these issues, that would be better for creating jobs. When people are cared, lives like that can get you a long way politically. One of our jobs this people honors and the vital importance of these issues and understand that got to be in or linked to to get anywhere is to never allow a debate about the future jobs to get in the way of the fight to save our planet. We have to link this up and the only way we will ever then cannot, the only way it will happen is to understand what people have to be in the middle of the discussion and we have to make dramatically bigger demand than we made a to this point. We have to demand a future where our job to destroy the planet and we have to demand a future where profiteers dont get richer by destroying the planet and destroying our jobs. High. Yes im a we do address that in the book can we do have an opinion about that. The guaranteed income idea started with axes of the first automation [inaudible] i wish i was for 11 right now. So in the 60s, how is this economy going to work hard . Heres the idea. Everyone with a guaranteed basic income. They wont go out and break into rich peoples houses inserted get out of our way. Then we can build the society and do whatever we want. Thats presented better use of public relations. The idea is give everyone the right. Other paths to human labor. This is a big idea for Milton Friedman and conservative economists. The reason why its basically you say we are going to buy half a percentage of the population with a relatively small amount. Enough to keep them from starving and with a roof over their head as long as they dont bug us. The good news is this in the money because theyre desperate on products. We get it right back. Also, most peoples vision, this is a way of getting rid of Government Social services. With the individual income, you will go by health care, shop around and your posture for Public School in private school. Everything is run by the marketing guy in office appropriate part of the situation. That is a nightmare world and ive given it that description perhaps. If we are going to fight to get a guaranteed income for people, but its like to be actors in the drama. Lets fight for the cake, not the crimes. Lets recreate society to do something great. Not just thank you from amazon to for the 50 check. That not going to be the same way. I would have to assume they are not planning to dismantle that. I think in our case the guaranteed annual income is the right way to go. We should guarantee all the strength and the second bill of rights. Chop them up wage, health care education. I dont like the idea of having a market commercial relationship just paid off not to make trouble. I dont think thats all society. The only one our dealers and meth dealers. I dont necessarily know about that. But there is a tremendous amount of organizing and political work that has to work. I dont want to organize and political work to be 41 in greece. A minimum and had. That puts our focus back on and it getting died. The fact of the matter is that changes are so revolutionary. I would argue for esa social welfare is a good theory is a good way to begin. If you are racing around trying to cobble together a future and you are going to maybe pick up people in your car and maybe do a little bit of gardening, you may make enough money to get high, but its unlikely youll make enough money to buy into a health care pool, even the most available element of the reforms that have the fire. I believe what is coming is going to force us as a country to adopt ingle payer medicare for all health care that is available to everybody. We are going to have to do something else, too. Work is going to be less available. We are going to have to make transportation for you. Some of our friends get all upset and say Bernie Sanders is running for president. Hes promising people that read stuff. Free stuff is a really good idea because you know its gotten a lot of reset for a long time . The really rich people. They got a lot of free stuff be distributed most of our wealth. When they crash the Global Economy, we gave them a lot of free money and the fact of the matter is theres enough money for us to find and a functional social welfare is a bit then provides a cushion for people going through a lot of struggles. The final against and we we talk about this in the book at the last chapter is all about solutions. We talk about ending the fantasy that you are going to draw some big new pool of jobs into your account by giving the Multinational Corporation a whole bunch of Economic Development money. We believe that the future of Economic Development is no money going out of town. All of it is staying at home and investing in worker owned community centered, cooperative work places that do respect human beings. This is not some fantasy. It happened all over america right now. We write about incredible work being done. The fascinating thing is some of the most Innovative New Tech Companies are operating on a cooperative locally controlled model. We do all sorts of incredible innovation. They are cooperatively on, locally controlled and they are sponsoring all the robot imagination because they want to talk to the kids that are going to come up with engineers and tell them you dont have to make a society where your credible creativity is simply direct you into making some alien or richer. You can use your creativity to make it better and more Humane Society. We can do that and that is what our money should be spent time. [applause] my name is tim. Im one of the worker of mercer read ms. I will keep this brief. Towards the end of your talk, you discuss the unwillingness of the money classes, the corporatist to give up the power theyve accrued over all these years of bankruptcy and eluding us. Youll have to forgive my cynicism on the matter. What historically or otherwise makes you think they will give it up . They have a firm grip on it. We talk about this season. Im not going to lie, even that hard nospaceon are kissed and then things have been softened a little bit by watching the sort of political camp pain. Ive never watched polls before. So this is a first. But im skeptical. I mean, like on the far side of skeptical. I dont really think even with a Bernie Sanders president he is the money classes will do anything differently. Im just curious what you have to say about that. Here we go. With this technology. People in power are never going to do when it may have been idea because they are nice people. We have social change by forcing people to do stuff. Always been that way. Every one hole, labor unions, social security. If i dont pay my taxes im in trouble. Are the politicians got elected so you are going to go to jail. It took something of tremendous organizing to win. I think i may know, people stop participating. You take down government. It happens all the time. That depends on the quality of the organizing and vision. I think the idea that we cant give people an hour to change their course through selling our political strength is not true. Better not be true because thats only where were ever going to do it. This is a really important point in the book. We have come to a long, dark period in American History politically in which voter turnout has plummeted. Interest in politics is much lower. People fear powerless, so why torture yourself by getting involved in politics. Its a fundamental way people operate. I came of age in the late 60s and early 70s and i was their brightest Student Movement was fading on american campuses. Pete interested in politics but from being really cool to find cool, sort of like a weirdo thing in the 70s. Since then, xenophon deepfreeze. It was frowned upon, like something is wrong with you especially leftwing politics. That was not an accident. Thats what people who ran this country wanted. They were eager to make most americans think it was worth encouraging that. You didnt see big business running campaigns. Not a penny was spent there. This was actually very deeply concerned with the growth of the Student Movement and the future of the planet that wasnt sympathetic to big business. Weve got to get rid of these guys and they succeeded. For that reason a professor now for 30 years roughly dealing with young people cant lay, not to mention my own children. The frustration people felt in this netherworld where a political act to and youre still powerless and tune it out. That moment is over. It is now officially over. Where were you interested in politics . The guy won an election and 15 Million People got killed. When you have 20 unemployment, politics its really important suddenly. Then its not like a matter. Are entering a plea. That is why we see an extraordinary increase and that is the key to the future. I dont say that this or that romantic kids are great. That the historical record. Social change is always by young people. Martin luther king was 39 when he died. These three young men hitting their prime sense at this. Some of my grayhaired comrades in this new but the momentum and energy. What we see in this country right now is incredibly hard thing. That class matter. The sanders campaign. What are you smoking . Unthinkable. Now we take it for granted. Im very optimistic we are on the verge of a political moment change the world. I know its getting late. We will keep you here all night i promise you. I take my brothers question seriously. I know we should be skeptical. Scat is designed as an act of hope because when youre a scat goal, you want someone to explain how this is going to work. The fact of the matter is we have to take this ourselves. We talk about president ial politics. Lets get away from the very moment and understand thats whats happening this year is being driven by economic changes in place before and will accelerate after. What is happening this year is based on realizations we came to a while ago. In 2008 a bunch of wealthy people crashed the Global Economy and set up for a massive unemployment, high and employment for people in some urban areas, depression level of employment. Something scorching and awful and painful and instead of doing everything we could to alleviate the pain and to address an old into account those that caused the crisis, we gave those hundreds of aliens of dollars. I think i was a wakeup call for america and people are still hearing that to this day. We have movement afoot in this country today that are the most inspired movement of modern time. Class Matter Movement says africanamerican young people have a right to walk the street is transformational. The fact that the movement is linked to struggle to end mass incarceration and mass unemployment is a big deal stuff. The fact we have a 15dollar wage and a Union Movement this is a big deal stuff. The history of this country, this is big deal stuff. Its all out there is happening. The people organizing an all kinds of ways. One of our least perfect president , Thomas Jefferson sat in 1798 at a point in this country was in utter chaos, john adams was gillian has political boat. A friend of mine says what are we going to do . The whole thing is falling apart. Jefferson wrote that, he said in a short amount of time the reign of the witchy shall pass. We will for a moment look around us and see all of the people under attack, all of the people threatened and people threatened and if we have ourselves together, we will see them off. Brothers and sisters, we are in a moment of amazing transformational activism across the country. As we begin to hope, these two movements together we have a tremendous ability to have a transformational political moment. Its going to come no matter what. I guarantee that. The only question is whether we are ready when the great mass of americans turn to less and say what is your answer to a jobless future. Some billionaires going to have an answer. We have to be there with an answer, too. Arias are out to be that we will have a democracy there you have a power to shape not just politics, but economics, we have the ability to push her way into that room where the decisions are being made to save these decisions must be made on behalf of those who do not have today because you have taken too much from us and we are going to shape the future where all of us have what we need. So, we have time for three more questions. With such erudite professional features really have time for one more answer. Because three people have been waiting for a long time is that if you take the three questions that one and then try to synthesize theory of theirs. Is that acceptable to all of you . Can we do a big round of applause for a facilitator here ive read, and all the great work. My question comes from the history that ive lived. I was at even the freedom of them in the 60s. I was part of the dude nonviolent coordinating committee. After the 60s were over i took a factory job in 1972 and network spot until 1980 thinking we would organize workers to make the transformational change. While a share up to miss him and all of the other things i happen to be connected to an organization calling white people in the White Community around with privacy issues. What i want now i guess is can you give me some sad and may be technological changes you talk about is the hope that these movement will not end up being what i call transactional movement. Weve done that over 30 times. Im making that up. Where do you see the centers of organizing the people developing and thinking about power beyond the traditional structures . If you are talking about, you know, developing a totally contradict a capitalist. If you could speak on that, do you think that the day when people leave here, they will be clear in terms of what you said. What a brilliant question. When you take a couple in a bubble finish it off. We love this model, but we also know the danger of that, which is the speakers can always select the question may choose. We are not going to do that. Im going to leave some for bob because i know where he will go here. We talked about organizing issues. Look, we write about this quite a bit. This is an important thing to understand. One of the most exciting things in America Today is a new model of organizing that accept this reality and we are cobbling together existences and all sorts of places. And also these terrible threats but if you do organize enough, you might get hit with automation. More wages might tell you that we can replace you with a machine or these pressures of globalization. They are organizing people who have to get to work. They are organizing them around also ideas for better transportation and a vision of free transportation. So you can get to work without going broke. The other good thing about is the last election cycle in seattle they endorsed the group of candidates including the socialist member of the seattle city council. A lot of the candidates one. They also endorsed ayn rand a Referendum Campaign to get all sorts of new funding for transit. There have been remarkable success in this concept of needsbased organizing. We see a real future there. Second element i will take, you asked about citizens united. Boy, theres a lot in a book about that. Where the Supreme Court in america right now the goes out of its way to make it harder to vote and easier to buy an election. Batson at the democratic model. That is a model that undermines democracy itself. So we believe this is one of the most critical things people have to work on when we start to talk about rebuilding a democratic infrastructure. We think there should be at least to an amendment to the constitution. Amendments are easy. Everybody thinks you cant amend the constitution. Thats the hardest thing in the world. Never ever happen. It was written in handed down on the tablet of stone to michele bachmann. And the fact of the matter is that isnt the case. We have amended dozens of times and weve amended sometimes are rapidly a militant dramatic change. We amended the constitution three times between 19131920. Woone and then but give us an elected u. S. Senate. Another amendment gave us the right to tax corporations and to create the tax system. That allowed us to have all sorts of billy to have something of a minimal control over wealth and power. The third amendment gave the right to vote to women. So we took half of humanity and brought them into the political process. We did that in seven years. Im not promising you it was easy and people were organizing but when w we get together momet in our history we amended the constitution a lot. In the 1960s we admitted the constitution to remove the wealth of barrier to voting adventures a couple years later we amended the constitution to say 1821yearolds the vote because we didnt think they should be sent off to war a not have the right to vote on the force. Constitutional amendments are necessary and real. We just dont have enough of them recently. We have a couple for you and there is organizing going on all over this country. Part of his democracy awakening is raise the passion of power on these issues. 16 states and over six our communities have asked congress to amend the constitution to get big money out of politics, to say that our elections should not be organized around the principle that money is speech but corporations are people around the principles are put onto matter more than their dollars. Amend the constitution to get money out of politics. If we are at the basis of it, why dont we amend the constitution to set absolutely that every american has a right to vote under right to have that vote counted based on their humanity, not based on some game played by some states to make it harder to get an id or to say that if you got into a lot of trouble with the law, you cant vote in the future. Brothers and sisters, money out, voters in. [applause] let me address the last piece, which is to what end question. Its pretty clear for our work that capitalism as we have known it, a system or some pursuit of profit by investors competing with each other to maximize their returns, that this is would work well with the technological revolution. Its having a lot of problems right now. The way it works no, its going to be changed dramatically. We think youll way to change it is through democratic processes. Where we end up, i think it will be clear it would be far closer to was traditionally called socialism, which is where the economy, the wealthy economy is controlled socially and democratically. It doesnt really tell you a great deal. I think the details which is where the devil is in the details, thats going to be taking place in community after community, things like this here, like the coops in cleveland that john talk about. We will see what works and what doesnt. I can imagine there will still be private property, small businesses. I dont think its either all black or all white. I think there some gradation of their to be determined by Human Experience and democratic practices. I know that sounds like a lame answer but that still way i can understand. I have answer here. Thats why were going across this country because we believe the greatest movement of our times will be the movement that says the future belongs to us, not to somebody else. And we are going to make sure that that future is humane, decent, and tied. That it gives us all what we need and it make sure that the benefits of technology dont belong to somebody we never met. Is first several tons released in the 1980s and 90s are accounts of his business transactions and real estate companies. In the early 2000 she released several financial selfhelp books. And his two most recent books, time to get tough, and crippled america, he writes about politics and outlines his vision for american prosperity. When you have a statute thats about men and women being equal in the workplace, and you were dealing with a very real physical difference between men and women, what does the quality look like . Does it mean treating men and women exactly the same, many pregnant women exactly the same, as if pregnancy were not in the picture, or does it mean taking account of pregnancy . That caused at one point, i mean still is lingering effects today that wil would put the cause a y serious rift in the community that is covered in chapter five. But in the early years after title vii was enacted and they did not know what to do about pregnancy, they were so confused. Finally and i can send it to their issued a guidance, the law is enacted and 64, issued a guidance that said okay, firing someone because she is pregnant is illegal. Releasing her senior it washes out on leave having a baby, thats illegal. The Supreme Court also had the decision about that. You know, those kinds of peter to the measures and theres another case about a woman who was a teacher who her School District enacted a rule that after the third or fourth month of pregnancy, the teacher had to be out of the classroom because she had to be on leave. She could be anywhere near the kids. Those restrictions were struck down, where the court really got dumbed up was when it came to things like should pregnant women be able to produce but equally in a paid disability leave program that they had in place for everybody . So the guy whos out for a while getting cancer treatment, the woman whos out for a while having a baby, he was getting a paycheck and she wasnt. That was at General Electric and thaandi went up to the supreme t and the Supreme Court found in General Electrics favor. They found pregnancy discrimination wasnt automatically sexist omission because there were plenty of women who never got pregnant. This wasnt a distinction between men and women. This was a distinction between pregnant and nonpregnant persons. [laughter] so the backlash was swift, and congress enacted the pregnancy discrimination act in 1978. The general election decision was and 76. The pda definitely cleared things up to an extent but the two cases that are in the books about pregnancy, three cases in the book about pregnancy, are all after the pda.
