Im one of those rare creatures that we profile in this book. The font is conservative professors on liberal arts campuses or intimidated. There is the sense that conservatives are moving into enemy territory. But that isnt what we found. We interviewed over 150 conservatives in the social sciences and humanities. And we found they tell us the universituniversity is a much me tolerant place than we sometimes think and then the rightwing critics of the university tell us it is. What specifically did you hear from these professors . A lot of them felt away from home in the university because large swaths of the university are not as politicized as we think they are and the conservatives gravitate towards the least politicized quarters of the academy. Academy. So, they often become a subfield in other disciplines that are not in American History and claimed to be historians, military historians. Its deeply politicized by the left and therefore they find the economy to be a relatively. If they do stray into more politicized field, they can have a rough time with it and thats true. We profile their experiences as well. But its also the case that they make friendships across the political divide in the economy, and they are much better at carving out niches and of themselves we sometimes think they are serious what are some of those areas where the professors its a little more troubling to be conservative . They study race or the american family, feminism. The history of the left or the right, areas that are important to the left and that are dominated by the left. So, somcome some disciplines arh more politicized than others. Sociology for example is a pretty leftist discipline. About a quarter of self identify as much. If you are a conservative and you enter sociology, you have to have thick skin and be politic about how you present yourself. And you have to be cautious. A lot of the conservative sociologists we interviewed closeted themselves prior. They concealed their politics and didnt come out with the ivory tower shot of the ten years when it was safe to do so. Has it benefited the conservative political movements to think of the College Campuses as liberal and tolerant places. I certainly understand the reaction of conservatives to the liberal university. Weve often overreacted. To steal some Young Conservatives away from the higher education. They dont want to professors because they see it as a much more intolerant place than it in fact is a. Have you had any issues being the conservative scholar . Not enough to not make me want to be a professor. On the whole light, ive been very happy. And we dont claim that the university doesnt present challenges. We need the education and the Political Sciences and so, we hope to encourage them more to become professors. Have you been critiqued from the right because you are saying the universities are not such bad places . We have. Although notably by the conservatives from outside the university. The conservatives inside the university as we record in the buck tend to have a different view. We overstate the intolerance that this was some other minority as a racial minority we wouldnt be understating the intolerance that exists. We shouldnt copy the grievance politics of the left by overstating the intolerance that does exist we dont have very good survey data prior to the 1960s but a lot of the evidence that does exist suggests that there were University Faculties were quite liberal. Theyve been liberal for a long time. From the 60s and 70s as the new left and particularly the feminist center in the 70s you did drift to the left but its been a broadly liberal institution for a long time. Its been very unlocked by discipline. Its within the social sciences that it varies as well. What do you teach at claremont . I teach american politics. Freshman course, senior . We teach the Cold Shoulder or is that look at the conflict of the moral questions and i teach a course on social movements and sometimes teach courses on religion and politics. The student body comes in. Is it pretty split, do they have a predefined attitude in these issues. It makes us a little bit unusual compared to the Group Editors like williamsburg store sophomore. John shields has written this book passing on the right conservative progressives in the progressive university. Is it bad that colleges are overall liberal or negative i should say . More conservatives would be a good thing. I dont think there needs to be a perfect balance with the economy needs to look like america. I dont think they would be a good thing especially in the fields that are dominated by the left, and i think this is because more conservatives would improve the social science. Is there an intimidation factor at all thinking about certain things . Theres a couple of movements in the current policy all lives matter, black lives matter. I think there is. And i think that its a problem that affects the left somewhat more than the right and this is because liberal professors tend to teach the courses as the subjects that might get them in hot water. And that is largely because a lot of conservative professors avoided teaching those courses. It does provide a benefit for the conservatives which they tend to teach courses that are less likely to insight is kind of movements have you ever steered away from a potential course . Some conservative professors weve interviewed to steer clear. Have to ever gotten ourselves in trouble for thinking anything . I have not.
