Secretaries of state colin powell and condoleezza rice. She also served as Communications Director to the majority whip, tom delay. She graduated cum laude at Georgetown University school of foreign service. Please welcome emily miller. [applause] always hard to follow a big act but i know you can do it. Im talking about guns, you know . Thank you for having. Im honored to be here. And so on are to be present with all of you guys, and wish she was here but shes here in spirit. As i said im going to talk about guns. Into the cover of my book. Ive got myself holding a gun which is my own gun. That three years ago this month, three years ago id never shot a gun in my life. I never even thought about shooting again. I never definitely had not thought of owning a gun. But what changed me and my perspective on this issue which has become such a big issue in our nations politics these days is personal. I was the victim of a crime. I was dog sitting for friends in washington. Those of you visiting for stay here for internship this summer you probably seem we have a lot of crime in d. C. And i was dog sitting and i walked out of the house where i was taking the dog and a close the front door but i didnt like it. When i came back, just a few minutes but i walked back inside and there was a man in the robbing the house. The police later said he is clearly a drug addict. I confronted him. I didnt get hurt physically, but he stole my wallet. I thought, which was a dumb idea, i was going to follow him, get a picture and show the police. So i chased him down the street with my blackberry. Now have an iphone. I got around the corner and found in standing outside with about 15 other men, to pick up trucks parked in the middle of the street and all of a sudden they see me. One of them started running at me. I turned quickly ran back behind sso ticket back to the house terrified and called the police. The police came and they dusted for fingerprints and explain to me this was a common thing now in d. C. Where these are drug addicts, dealers, whatever from virginia, because i did catch a license plate, coming to d. C. , get the drugs and on the way of trying to hit up a bunch of houses and get a bunch of quick cash. By the grace of god i wasnt hurt. They didnt do anything to me, and thank god. But going to bed that night i was terrified, what if they get back in . What if this happens again . What if, god forbid, they are surprised and the the to act ou, and they are on drugs. You just dont know. It was the first time in my life if i just had a gun i would have a chance to defend myself. But i was just laying there. Instead, and i did have a gun i took my friends dresser and push in front of the bedroom door to barricade myself so i could sleep. The next day i thought this is crazy. I want to get a gun to defend myself. At the time a work of the Washington Times and went to my editor and said, im to get a gun or a third its difficult to i dont know what the situation is, but how about i write about in the paper . He said thats fine. He said it will take a couple of weeks. D. C. Is gun control laws but nowhere else in country does. Until the 2008 decision by the Supreme Court, the heller case, which overturned the 30 year ban on ownership of guns, but d. C. After that even after that the supremSupreme Court acted in cau put together all these gun control laws. I started going through it and found out i had to take a written test. I had to take a class. This is just to own a gun, typically. It ended up, what i thought would take two weeks, took four months and it was 17 steps. That was just to buy legally one kind that im not allowed to take out of the house. Obligor from the south or the west, is that right . Those of you who are not reacting, a pitcher from the northeast. Because when youre from a blue state in the northeast, a nice it took 17 steps and four months to keep one gun at home, people are like, i dont get it. It was so hard to exercise your Second Amendment right. In america, you go, thats shocking because if you just go talk passionate across the bridge to virginia which is a mile away, you walk into a gun store, youre not a felon, not mentally ill, not a drug addict, have a federal background check, instantaneous, all this information is in the system except for Mental Health records which is a major problem, but you walk out and heavy gun legally and you can defend your family and your home. A lot of these states have control all these gun control laws. Thats when i decide to write this book, emily gets her gun, because soon after i, as i said, three years ago, never shot or owned a gun. I want to all this and saw what gun control laws do. Very soon after that we had two factors that came to bear. One is president obama was reelected and get always been strongly antigun and strong gun control openly before in his statehouse career. He is now a lame duck and the second horrific thing that was the terrible newtown tragedy which 20 children and eight educators were shot and killed by a homicidal maniac. I think all of us after newtown, every human being, not only in america which was distraught over this can be idea these children killed, innocent children and teachers, but what president obama did and what is different now than any gun control effort youve seen in the last 20 or 30 years is he has Mike Bloombergs money behind. Mike bloomberg is former mayor of new york. Is spending tens of millions of dollars. He is supporting obama to push for gun control laws and using newtown as their political reason, exploiting it, my opinion disgustingly so, exploiting the town to push for tougher gun control laws. You saw this Media Coverage of the push for gun control law that start right after the newtown tragedy. And i saw a lot of the media, which i am part of, using emotion as opposed to fax in the coverage. Walltowall coverage of gun control last you especially, all these issues coming up. But you dont have facts. I want to read you a little bit from a book and this is a chapter on media distortion. This is the media is largely to blame for misconceptions about gun control. There are two major reasons for the media distortion of the facts. Original describe local tv stations that started the news broadcast about stories about Violent Crime victims but also the National Media after mass shooting. The sandy hook massacre was particularly horrific because victims were innocent school children. It was a rare event. Not an event in increase in mass shooting but nevertheless the media would walltowall with coverage from connecticut for weeks. Been obama, funded by bloomberg, use this terrible crime to launch their plan to bring back the socalled assault weapons been. The distortion goes beyond the fact that shooting in grisly death and i gun violence also plays a role. Mainstream Media Outlets are based in new york, washington, d. C. , los angeles. Fewer report are gun owners. As a result they are constantly making mistakes about some pluck and terminology and functionality. Their ignorance is widely exposed after the white house released a photo of president obama skeet shooting. Media print outlets and quickly labeled a gun or rifle instead of a shotgun. For those of you dont know this to be clear or rifle shoots a single bullet straight on shot can parse the shelf using as many pellets to scatter in wider. Each shooting skeet shooting is done with a shotgun in would have a chance at shooting the small clay. Rifles i will publicly theyre going after our assault weapon, not shotguns. Almost every newspaper uses the term assault weapon but do not use the quote for the paper highcapacity magazine, clip without putting quotations. Political terms that are going to him about whether or not functional terms. Theres no such thing as an assault weapon. Reporters also use the word stockpile, arsenal, weapons of war for the kinds of fire arm the average gun owners possession. Immediate astonished at the unremarkable quantity of ammunition once gain a new times editorial in july 2012 entitled 6000 votes question what bulk internet purchases of munitions are not monitored by the government. A Washington Post editorial that same month mentioned the astonishing 30,000 rounds of handgun ammunition that james home perched dish Purchase Online and should be prohibited . Apparently the writers didnt realize an average shooter can go through over 1000 rounds at the range in a single weekend. So its very common and perfectly reasonable and Cost Effective to order a large at one time. As i wrote this paragraph i went to the closet to see how much ammunition i had. Im no gun nut, just a woman who owns a gun for selfdefense in her home i home and host range o practice once in a while. I had 1500 rounds of boxes right now. I probably have lessons about this but it takes up as much space as my kelo. Thats it. So when your arsenal, its a this much. Thats a little section on media distortion. This book i wanted to get out is the facts. Theres many factual reed but the three most important, and thats what hope you will take way from here, and that is stored about gun control law, number one, no gun control law has ever reduced a crime. When youre about we just need commonsense gun control laws, tell me one that has reduced crime. Thats not partisan. The center for disease control, a fairly antigun organization as a matter fact, government agency, did a study for to you. Every gun control law in the country, cant find one. Harvard university, not exactly a bastion of conservative thought also did the same study, cant find a. Number two, there is no correlation between gun ownership and gun crime. What i mean by that is has more guns or in a civilian hands, there is no increase in gun crime. The people say we need to have less guns, why . There are more suing ownership of guns than any time in our nations history right now. About half of all homes have half of all american houses have a gun in the home. However, gun control and gun crime has gone down every year for the past 20 years to the point that gun murders are down 50 in the past 20 years. Half. Talk about people who were shot and dont die is down 70 . And ownership is like this. Gun crime is like this. So theres not, fact or not i say more guns lead to more crime. However, the pew or decision pulled it is questioned, getting gun crime is up, the same, or down . The in one year, fighter, 10 year periods. Nine out of 10 americans said gun crime, gun murders, gun killings is up, or the same. So that means theres only one editing people in this country who knows that gun murders are down for the same. Actually went down. Why is that . Thats because people have basic facts and thats what im trying to do. The third major fact, the first was no gun control law has ever described to us that one is theres no connection between high gun ownership and more gun crime. The third one, because to what i was reading about, mass shootings. Have not increased. You seen a lot more cable news especially covering these things, a lot more coverage of them. They have not increased. The Congressional Research service did a study to look at 40 years of mass shooting, which is four over people in a public place killed. Estimates to about 34 people a year. Because thats the year of newtown was a higher year. Its not increasing. Its just the coverage is increasing. We are at this gun control issue as long as we have a second term president who really does want to go but he said i will do it. He said im going to do with our without congress but its going to be a top issue going into 2014. Bloomberg said he will spend 50 million to push come his have taken this group mothers for gun since i made it a front group because hes funny. This will be an issue going into 2016th what people come what americans want. I found where i come from both in his book and in my personal as i said to you that they can do this summer three years ago i would like ive never shot a gun. I dont know. Is that for me its not about the guns. Its about my rights and its about my right as american under the constitution, the Second Amendment. A lot of variety been taken away over the last few years and i think americans want to push back on. I want to read the last sentence oof the book and this is what im coming from on this. God gave us the right to defend ourselves. Whether from danger citizens or tyrannical governments to our Founding Fathers had those rights cannot be infringed. I generally dont call myself progun. I choose disk of myself as proSecond Amendment. A gun is just a tool but the fight is for freedom. Thank you. Thanks, emily. Lets take some questions on this. We have one, peter, right down here. Im from texas, and you were talking about Second Amendment rights and all that, and my dad and i go shooting almost every other weekend together, something weve always done spent at a range or outside . We have a friend who lives outside of the City Properties we go and shoot clays and have a rifle and shotgun out there. Theres a gun act that has come up to ban semiautomatic weapons, which is by the way a type of rifle that ive been shooting since i was four. And i was just wondering your thoughts on issue and whether that is likely something that potentially could be passed in the coming years of . No. I mean, of course theres a lot of language, and i go through my book, so adamant, i have known as three years ago probably, semiautomatic is basically we all have. Except for a revolver which revolves. Semi automatic, you pull the trigger once and fires one shot. I dont want to get too far in the weeds on this but basically he always i in the media there, and yes, semiautomatic gun. What else is there quick i dont know what else you would have. The opposite of semiautomatic is fully automatic. The military uses those. The police have those. You pull the trigger and it fires forever. Basically use that in war to suppress fire. You have a special permit, go through atf to have one. Never ever used in crimes. That doesnt stop the present of the United States from saying weve got to get these weapons off the streets. He said we have to get semi automatic i mean fully automatic guns off our streets. So he corrected himself to say fold automatic. There are no fully automatic weapons. Semiautomatic is a term for the people understand function of the firearms is an iq his buddies used incorrectly. I dont think as long as you have anyone who values the constitution any elected office i dont see how that could ever gun ban could pass but even if it did you get the Supreme Court may be like okay, lincoln has a question down in front. Lincoln carver from st. Louis. I was wondering if you could comment just on those people who would say the Second Amendment is sort of outlived its usefulness, how the founders put in there to protect us from government and militias. Because of the qualifier, all rights to bear arms is not feasible and has outlived its day. Former Supreme Court Justice Stephen said that recent in his book that we need to amend the Second Amendment. Second enemy is working just fine. No one needs to be amending the constitution at least in that direction. The hell decision was landmark. I have to say im not a person goes round reading Supreme Court ruling but this one is interesting but if you get a chance resulting, it is easy to understand and very interesting. They explain because a lot of people who are pushing for gun control laws apart in the second a minute about the militia means guncontrol militias. They explain, they go through the whole history of how its written and it has a clause and is the. The concept and went back to the Founding Fathers documents and what the Founding Fathers were saying both in what they wrote and what the thinking was they just come out from under king george and want to make sure that no government ever had that much power again, and the deterrent for that is having civilian ownership of firearms. Thats what it was intended for. We used for selfdefense, but that is the intent. So i cant see it ever possibly getting through the senate, but it would never get ratified. Hello. Im benjamin from michigan. Its pretty easy to get a gun and michigan. More specifically, a lot of colleges across the country, its very hard to carry or even have a gun with the. I know in michigan its allowed, you can have a gun, open carry permit anywhere. Theres an exception that colleges can prevent it. But would you comment on like what students physically us with you about those kinds of laws, or what we can to . I hear this a lot, colleges have such a wide range on this issue whether you can if you have a carry concealed permit in your state and the people who are prosecond a minute or progun side look, look what happened at virginia tech. You were to have a way to defend yourselves and gun free zones are the most dangerous places. Look at aurora, for example. Thats a mass shooting which is more rare obviously the james holmes had eight i think movie theaters between his apartment and he chose the one which had no guns allowed. Murderers are crazy but maybe not stupid to go about walk somewhere where they can do damage. Look at fort hood, the school shootings. Essentially gun free zones. I understand this movement College Student student say i dt to live in a known gun free zone. College campus, a large place. Obviously the flipside of that is people say drinking on campus. Obviously, gun ownership, number one, it is a huge responsibly. One i dont take lightly. If youre a gun owner you are responsible for it at all times, when its on you can when its not on the. If its logic and if you need to lock it. If its loaded, if its not loaded. If a person takes on the responsibility and if d. C. Is lastly any country that does not allow concealed carry. In fact, is not allow any kerry. The rest of you probably in your state can get a concealed carry permit to go through background checks and that training, youre being responsible enough. I will see why you should be allowed to attend the responsibility to carry them on college campuses. Question over here from jordan. Jordan. Im jordan henry from missouri. How do you suggest that we combat the disparity ideology between bigger cities where theres little to no gun exposure to the majority of people versus small towns like my own where we bring our gun collections to church and show off to each other . Right, right. It really is, and i went on this book tour. I was instantly different places, and its just, the culture of america is so different when you talk about guns, when you go to urban settings that have so much gun control laws. The theme is about, like you said easiest every guncontrol laws that exist in the country and crime is up, murder is up as you. Look at chicago, 83 people shot. Toughest gun control law in the country. New york is going up again since they stopped stop and frisk. Again i cant say to to becausei dont know for a fact that can control, that gun control increases going to a lot of people believe that, that if theres no deterrent to bad guys. Frankly, i deeply that but i cant say it actually, that someone is going to rob you, look at mike streets. They are not going to walk into a house in virginia and robin. There from virginia. They could have driven the extra mile to go into the house in virginia robbed. But even with the chance of someone having a kind of virginia are . Pretty good. So its unbelievable that the cultural differences and the people who live in icy america understand that. In d. C. If youre not allowed to take a gun out of the house, how to go to the range to practice . There is a legal transport which falls under federal law but under federal logic and take a gun anywhere where you can legally carry. So i can only legally carry the gun in my home and i can legally carry the gun at the shooting range in virginia. So i can take it on loaded, lock them in the case in the back of my car to the shooting range, back, and thats it. Just hope you dont get mugged. Im kelly. Im from florida, and the stand your ground law has been very controversial in our a. Is to anything you can speak to that . And then if you think that it was like the stand your ground law has gotten totally out of control with the Trayvon Martin trial. Stand your ground laws, it was florida initiate, wrote the first one. Basically simple. If you are confronted with, your life is in danger, you have no way you do not have to back off. The criminal has to back off. You do not have to run away. A lot of states are prosecuting people for attacking back to the criminal. It didnt apply in the case of zimmerman because he was physically under Trayvon Martin so it was selfdefense. Thats what the court ruled. Thats what the jury ruled. Its selfdefense. Which wasnt. If you watch the media, it was a stand your ground law. Stand your ground law so producible. You are attacked, you can fight back. Of course, you say of course, if you and your home and someone comes in, for example, i had. I had a right to assume they are there because the great bodily harm or death, and then shoot and that makes it legal. You dont have to be a victim or that has gotten a lot of misconception out there. Any other questions . Emily, thank you very much. Thank you.
