[inaudible conversations] shall we start . I was waiting for somebody. What you summer doing, i was caught completely unprepared and they came to a reading without my own copy of the book. I thought i would have to buy a copy. Is the mic on . I can just scream at some point my voice is going to give out. Testing testing. I just need to hold it closer. I was finding is very format to this . Half an hour reading it been qa . Ill do a few readings convince him to a day and then maybe not as many readings as in the past because the q a tends to stretch on ottawa to give you a chance to ask questions. The passages we are reading, fyi, the reading i did in his city, i held a poem forum. What are the best passages of the passages that most want to be read . Ill give you some input but already to the list. It is, so the top winner in the poll was the final cheryl meeting where sbx gets shot down and i realize my life is over basically. The famous sexes paragraph though go on my tombstone which the one that gets quarter in every review, unfortunately. Completely out of context of course. Number three which surprised there was a meeting with the facebook i run the ads. We had the sort of weird mafia boss david. The fourth one was a story weblog the plumbing. Is there any other thing somebody wants as reading youre willing to raise your hand and proposed . Some of the characters are standing here, just fyi. You are free to out yourself or not. By kids with her, all the secret members, they chose to not out themselves. The israeli with a face like a sheet of plywood you can judge for yourself whether thats true or not. Anybody else have another passage you want me to read . If you really wont be to read a certain passage, by all means. You are cool with before i have chosen . I might tip of africa to the end of the first to have to read. I with this readings and then the q a and then i simple have the signing if you want it signed. Okay. So the final cheryl meeting. The context, i got myself into a massive political match about facebook, the future of facebook. I end up losing the political struggle. The theme it is cheryls road slip, Conference Room called only good news. Is that better . To sound like a voice of god now in the entire store . Im on page 465, dateline april 122013 period the theme here is like when i played every card i cant that like its a final meeting, another character the book. Its like all of facebook ads, former facebook ads glacial period i dont think Kurt Facebook integration of some happy to be disappointed. The scene was this final show reading is like thats it, they decided to decide and that probably going to go my way. The only good news Conference Room. We return to our starting point and can fyi for those of the red, the exact same scene with almost the exact same character as in the first paragraph. We return but under different circumstances. Accounts with almost exactly the same. I had put every last car. Sbx development, if you to browse internet and because he would have a better look at insider facebook experience, we built that. Sbx is what does that effectively. s we have made a point that effectively. And the guy behind. That is irrelevant. Sbx development have been pushed to its max but despite all the resources we had. Using a flat reception we had gotten partners to spend as much is possible. I tried to charm and persuade with whatever persuasive charisma i worked on investors and cofounder and past together members of the ateam support a vision most of the very understood. That was a good. On the bad side i have been insubordinate more or less refusing to work o on the projes designed for distracting me from sbx. I been an obnoxious punk pushing for country agenda in a culture rather losing its tolerance. Fdx a been a success than ever see praise for doing much with very little. None of the erstwhile fbx fans in the room were willing to stick any other info social capital on its future. Much less on the overarching programmatic direction it represented. Its your agreed to extend fbx the data joining currently limited or to put mobile ad inventory on fbx, there was a chance of pulling this off. If cheryl didnt rebuilding the death of fbx everything around it. The technology, innovative i. T. , the budget, the work on the partners, the bigger vision, gone. We were already on one card been drawn. You want to go ahead, boz . Bonds was the head of that like this big old boy with tattoos on his arms. After talking to anyone concerned, i think we should ship i can be matching on fbx. Thats like where you are kids mastered every device in the world. Continue with it on custom audiences only. Thats my recommendation. This will be a short meeting. Everyone has contribute to the discussion . We all nodded. Thats what you think boz, and thats what well do. I caught his eye. He looked away. Nobody moved or spoke. This woman months of discussion is arguably a decision had been made. Sherrill added, so thats it, nothing on fbx, no mobile inventory either. We will do as it is antipressing on with identity on custom audiences alone. I looked out the window at an alleyway and the huge sign pointing skyward like a divine commandment. I have certainly hacked. After some closing from held that i was too distracted to register everyone got up to leave. There was nothing left to discuss. He was out of the building before could attempt to catch up. I wandered into the fbx area or what was left of it. The product i gambled my entire facebook career on was on life support. For the second time at two years i walked out in the middle of the afternoon with nothing to do. So that was the death of fbx effectively. Shed a tear. So the next one is the one i get embarrassed is a sexist paragraph. The context is im not that this girl i barely knew on the fourth day. Three months later she announces she is pregnant. So again im going to read the full quote not the out of context vote. Page 57 and then in the middle. Should wild green eyes with a natural spots in her irises. Reminiscent of the Afghan Program National Geographic cover. Are personally was flimsy and rough. Should spend just between first jobs backpacking around the world. She was an imposing presence. Most women in the bay area are soft and weak, confident and naive despite the claims of worldliness and generally full of shit. They have yourself according to the feminism and ceaselessly want to independence but the reality is come epidemic plagued or four envision they become precisely the sort of useless baggage you trade for box of shotgun shells. Crucify me now. Again, point, contrast. British traitor on the other hand, was a sort of woman would end up a useful ally in the postapocalypse doing whatever work the copper three, Animal Husbandry or shock and blasted someones back. Long story short, you want to tie your genetic whacking to the bucking horse of her bloodlust which is what i was less nervous than it should on a random saturday when i showed up for brunch appointment and founder uncharacteristically moody. She complained of feeling nauseated and slightly out of it. With perhaps too much judgment grabbing a newspaper on the couch i suggested perhaps do a pregnancy test. Like any members played fast and loose, i had my fair share of scares. I was in season four of the show were woman ex showed up two weeks after the shag saying should quote mr. Perry. Sordidness in what i missed my bus. Nothing ever come of it and after the third show you just want to say look, woman, and much of a screaming infant in your arms and it looks like me we have nothing to talk about. She would have both soon enough. I did go to the doctor she replied. And . I am pregnant. Bam. That human life, shit i thought that i could hear god laughing in his having a, making other plans indeed. You want me to stop or keep on with applause seemed which is the other one . The bonds. You can choose. Theres a homegrown scene with the plumbing army meeting with the mafia boss boz . Vote . Who says the the bonds . 12. Been the home seen . Boz takes it. Went to the superdelegates say . No, im joking. Where is the boz seen . Okay. So boz is the head of ads in the recently was there because he was zucks ta at harvard. Thats what he was there. I dont believe you saw the Movie Social Network but the race that. At some point that became total pandemonium which i describe in the book and zuck basically said im screwed absent figure out what the hell is going on. And boz has no background in ads at all whatsoever. Boz was a longer a guest of the asking sitting in like it was a meeting but he officially installed leader. He carried himself like he owned the place which, of course, he kind of the. Is takeover of excerpts and more than a cosmetic shift. We were witnessing the complete reconfiguration of the ad Space Continuum along the single dimension from boz like shoe to fired. Where you were on that was yet to be determined. I had no idea where i fell. To figure this out and when requested we have one on what even the i didnt report him officially. In short order, so sitting across from at a small table in a small Conference Room staring at the tattoos racing is forums. On his right there was a figure of a map of california. On the left truth in latin also harbor tomorrow. I do a complete Facebook Stock going back to his time at harvard and clear into video. Thanks to the sightseeing is autobiography from rural Northern California to harbor to facebook. I scoped out his philosophy. Really this public conception. He clearly was one of those tough but fair types who pride themselves on directness and honesty. Truth was written on his body after all. For my part outside of physics textbookstruth to be a rather rare commodity, particularly in the tech world. I noticed those most made a big show of believing in truth were unusually attached to what a welcome pack of lies they held dear. The conversation proceed quickly to a role in the ads the. At facebook the Performance Review cycle semi annual with every february in august bring the usual a little shocking to make sure your biggest fans review and your biggest detractors didnt. I read the reviews. The complete of most. One logic and the other feature. Thats also true of the amazon reviews. Now, no shit. I can imagine the feedback without having been told the specific office. Thats true, boz ive made friends and enemies but michael has led them to give facebook the best ads team possible. This was ulcers true. I dont remember what my life was like before facebook and doesnt trail of destruction i caused by spending my entire life. Two children neglected, two different women ive spurned. Anything like an intellect or life outside campus nonexistent due to indifference and my dedication to the facebook cause. Dont be deceived by the within treatment of facebook in this book. Inside every cynic lives and heartbroken idealistic if im now a more great is because a one point like lucifer was being the proudest angel before the fall, i lived in paris for facebook perhaps even more than most. We moved onto the topic of the open and close debate. Body was if of a matter to express discontent to come to a conclusion quickly and end the uncertainty the plate every forwardlooking decision atlas making. This is one of those times. Afterwards we stood up and shook hands over the small desk. The meeting that the smell of the lasting with the mafia before things turned ugly and to start either unleashing hidden and are making offers that could not be refused. I didnt like the smell of it, not one bit. You know how that ended. Should i stop and just go to q a . Ordered one more . The homebrew . Now i lost my mark. 406. Is anyone here from the homebrew kit . Is the . Okay. He could provide necessary contacts. This is like a footnote. This is a true story. As Everything Else in the book by the way, believe it or not. When i moved onto the boat eyed about my homebrewed apparatus somewhere such stored on facebooks campus, of course. Come some hackathons, aided by some of the other craft their degenerate scum including chris, i deployed the fivegallon brew set up all the water in a respectable stockpile. When it came time to chill the world. No, we connected large pool of copper tubing to the faucet in the second the kitchen of building 16 your we were apprised of the fact it was raining on his desk and that of every other members of Senior Management which was directly underneath the kitchen and security rushed in with panic faces. Evidently we first the plumbing indication with her High Pressure cooling. Undaunted, our brave. Crew who in the state of inebriation finish the brew and left a large coral to ferment. Upon reaching sobriety of economy duties as product manager of this entry, i sent an apologetic email to zuck. There were no repercussions and i still zuck a bottle as we killed the beer instead. We killed inside and out. Move fast and break things, including the plumbing. The ghost of the. Whats next, q a lex. On the evidence corner and were so lucky to get and tony to come. Thank you so much. He just had a baby. Well, he didnt, but somewhat it. It is a proud father. Yes. If you have any questions would like to take questions, if you do please line up behind the mic max. Why are there to mic max . Just curious. Does that one work . Q a. Theres got to be somebody. [inaudible] so better than depicted in the book. You might want to say into the mic. Spent in the book you dont seem to mucto have much relationshiph the children so im wondering do you have one of . Yeah. The book is a snapshot in time. In fact it was in some ways worse than i depicted because doesnt hold child case support. Long story short, its pretty good now. I still see them, you know, the mother british traitor is as independent as ferocious as shes always been to recently she decide to go traveling the world with the kids. So single mother with two kids. They took off about a week ago. So they will visit family in new zealand. Not a huge part of the lives for the past six years. They are for and six right now. Now, no, theyre doing well. They dont quite understand the book yet i think but ive given a copy so if you read the acknowledgments use the reference to french architect. So yes, indeed, so withheld. The child was conceived the day i got the book deal actually. The child cannot write when this book came out, literally exactly 40 weeks later. Perfect time in all regards. So yes, there was another woman. Its three months old. Thats another strange situation to the mothers are very similar to each other. Very independent. Publiover the only women who cat up with me. There we go. At facebook crew showed up. So i wanted you have to get really close to it i think. Testing. I dont think its on. Ill just talk loud. I wanted to know if you have kept your Facebook Stock after leaving or if you dispose of the . If you kept it, would we consider that an endorsement for were facebook is heading . If you dispose of it do you regret doing that . I think i say in the book i did so all that actually, which i say so in the book. Obviously, it is there. The reason i mentioned that in there because, spoiler, the apple blog tells what happened after the had facebook save itself . It was accidental. It was through mobile. They spoke about what, six months to a year, with more than 50 mobile the one of the great things he pulled off, it was completely unexpected. I didnt see coming. Suddenly mobile would be the savior. Theres a saying in marketing that money follows eyeballs. If you look at merrymakers internet sites can use to this massive gap between but eyeballs are on internet and the money following it. Facebook, they broke that mold and to make the money follow the eyeballs in the span of a few quarters, or less. So facebook would from i guess what left, maybe 40 mobile to whatever it is not what you think is 85 mobile. Just incredible. They built an entire business around the completely unexpectedly. I criticize facebook a little bit for being unplanned. They simply did not have a five or 10 year plan. It just does not exist. But on the other hand, the improvise with well. When things come up that are unexpected they can capitalize on those in ways no other company could. As soon as people realize the, like all the money is following the eyeballs. I didnt see that coming. So yeah, i sold most of the stock. Im still bullish on facebook. Im not going to give up buy or sell signal the facebook. Are not negative on facebook. Whos next . Dont put me on the spot. I forget wha where i read iti think its we, but didnt Procter Gamble decide to decrease their advertising of thithese but because they didnt find a very effective . Yeah. Spewed theres a possibility of the people realize they may not so much product speak with the new story is p g, i do know that it is, public announcement, really weird, when ad campaigns the workout you should a public announcement but p g said this but targeting isnt working, we are going to scale down our facebook budget. If you read the book, its not even remotely surprising. One of the things, i was the first facebook ads targeting manager, hired by you partially, i spent a year trying to turn facebook data into money and it didnt work. Likes images, if youre trying to get a really positive response, is a marginal result really. Of course, in at tech ed us have to work for yourself. I think i called in the book to bring advertising is like the legacy student of advertising will the person there to do relationships and inertia and the chief marketing officer things an old fuddyduddy and whatever else. But other jobs to literally being a legacy candidate. Five years after, Procter Gamble wakes up and says if we target people who like crest toothpaste it turns out they dont buy no to this. They like it two years ago and it doesnt signal any intent whatsoever. Why would it . I guess im not surprised this might answer. So where was facebook located while you were there in the context of was in it was actually, when i joined it was still on how avenue. They got torn down. It was like an Old Industrial lab, nothing special looking. [inaudible] i dont know what it was before. No, no, no. Individual used to be the old sun microsystems. This massive campus think another been on the other side. Its like across the street from east palo alto. You were at [inaudible] the cool thing about the something was the intentions of like a, some of the logos precise as reminder to literally goes the ruins of the previous civilization. And thus would fall into the same trap went to avoid the cultural death that represents. That goes with these classical touches. On. Could you comment on the title a book and whether it has any relationship to information theory and monkeys typing at typewriters . No. Its funny, the first title was way more wonky than this. The original title was actually pseudorandomness which smb you know is fake randomness machines produce. Its funny a totally snookered me, like a month screwed the data, get rid of it. Chaos monkeys is also wonky but in a different way. Its a Diagnostics Software passage that netflix developed and basically what it does, picture a monkey went to david syndicate it goes and kills there is boxes are they tested to see if house of cards still strange or whatever. Some version is built by some major Internet Company wanting name. What i met with Silicon Valley is like to see with the chaos monkeys are kept. A company like buber says we are not going have taxes anymore. Or will not have hotels anymore, have a single airbnb and anyone with a Spare Bedroom into the own thing. Part of this book was written in barcelona and berlin. I went to barcelona which is airbnbs largest Real Estate Market in egypt or barcelona has been like completely world and arguably ruined by airbnb. This entire like apartment blocks that are nothing but effectively airbnb colonies in barcelona, and like the pretty parts of town. Theyre just trying to milk it. Its just full of a bunch of like drunk british and swedish and american tourists, things to airbnb. Literally 40 years of fascism could destroy the same thing in berlin by the way. Of the u. S. Air command in world war ii did not manage this. Airbnb this destroying barcelona and berlin effectively the other one is trying to survive the results of that. Thats where the title came from. [inaudible] im not even going to dive into that. Arguably they are, yes. Thanks for coming to speak today. Im wondering what inspires you to write a book . You were not provided before, right . I did that youre supposed to post your first seven jobs. My first job was as a journalism intern in south florida in the mid 90s actually. I feel like ive been a writer, faking being a technology guy. The writing thing was always part of the intent to some degree. Its a stretch to say i was undercover and i was about an facebook just great the book but to some degree that some which are actually. I always knew i would write a thats what all the dates are right because i was taking notes throughout the course of the thing. It was always in the back of my mind against both, i mentioned my mothers die, like a trigger to greater value your life. What some of the list . Writing this book. The real reason, maybe im taking someones question, i think we live in amazing times, just to get a little grandiose. What were living through, thing about this. All of Human Knowledge is now in that device. Your entire social life is mediated by this. Im old enough to remember not just no smart phones, but i was raised in libraries with card catalog. To live we are its crazy. People will look back and think of his like gutenbergs Printing Press or the Industrial Revolution or whatever. Look around and nobody is documenting it. The last decent tellall memoir is from jerry kaplan and is 20 years old. Its a good book but it really dated. I wanted create to some degree that. A century from now people ask what was it like back in the day . This might be one of a dozen books. Thats what i decided to commit professional suicide and right the book. Kind along those lines compose the process of writing the book . Did you just sit down over the course of a few months and being all out or was it tortures going over and over again . Im guessing i could guy. We read the home of brewing scene and you were not here. Thats chris. So he was the process. I knew i wanted to ride my mother dies. I decide to sell everything to a move to europe because i thought my career would be over i go to europe, start writing a little bit and then you write a book proposal and the new soviet agent undo and and the agent sells you to the publisher. Then you get a book deal. This was august of last year they wanted to be the summer read that issue. Doing a book in a year is like like speaker could just does not happen. We were looking at 10 months. I got the book deal and then i remembered a place come close to the about my most recent vote, beautiful and gorgeous and nobody should ever go there because they should remain unspoiled by this these beautiful islands. I basic lock myself like the unabomber and wrote all day and drink too much and stressed and raged and pissed off by edgar. I managed to get the manuscript by, never was, thanksgiving or christmas and dinner for five months of editing and legal review and all the rest of it. Out became 40 weeks, exactly 40 weeks after the book deal was struck. I would advise not to write a book. It will literally destroy a year or two of your life. I havent had a chance to read your book, only a little bit of it. What i do get from it is its sort of a tell all about, which brings up some of whats wrong, brutal about capitalism as practiced in Silicon Valley. So heres my question to you. In your journey have you ever thought about can we do better than capital . I get asked the question. Theres a bunch of marxist shit in the book. I make comparisons between facebook and timing is humans were my distant cousins are smoldering. Is like the famous quote from churchill, democracy is the worst way to our children a country other than all the other ways that have been tried. Capitalism is the worst way to divide the spoils with me to production except all the other ways that have come up with, right . Whats the alternative . I think capitalism makes a beast of us all. What you see in Silicon Valley this hyper capitalism. A lot of the wood is used in Silicon Valley, this focus of meritocracy, anyone who stays long enough realize it doesnt exist. How else to justify the fact few startups go and what has a billion dollar outcome and the other has a zero. We all have to pretend. Otherwise how could you possible justify that increment inequality, right . One of the most scary thing to talk about what these companies attract everything that is delivered to our homes. I was wondering if you could talk more about that. Could you talk more about ad blockers, are these companies doing us a Service Marks spirit in case you havent read the book is like a big brother chapter in which i say, this is what but my facebook out on, its these companies called axiom an excellent experience better than tracking you like literally since the 60s. Since before men have walked the earth. Nobody knows about this. Those companies to literally who lives in your house, their income level, education level and when they joined to actually Third Party Advertiser like target or Bed Bath Beyond they joined that they did with the discount card you use them at basically uses a vehicle for data jointer what you bought at the store, and the physical store like diapers, personal products, that is all known. The big challenge, part of what the story is about is joining that mass about an offline data to the online world. Distill it down. The store but its been hard to do just because basically what technologists would call a primary database is your name and address. On the online world if basically a lot of what facebook is doing is joining your browser or device literally does to an address that is joined to the fact that you bought a 12 pack of condoms last night, whether you know it or not. At the end of day, facebook, they care about maintaining your eyeballs on top of a because it adds to be a Necessary Evil to pay the light bill. They want to please you but the guy who wants to sell you a sweater or whatever at any cost, the kind does that. So if anything, the we think of its we. When people use facebook is almost like a toddler who was not learned. Facebook isnt showing anything. It is a messaging system that takes your browser cookie or the fact you are 37 in Mountain View on thursday at 7 00 and then shows you a message. Its like when you get it peace of email spam for like pills or something, the city was a google is showing the pills . Of course not. At the messaging system. Or when you get a marketing call, do you blame at t for . No. People dont understand because everyone no one is running ads. They dont understand that at basically a messaging system. You should be worried about what the advertiser knows and loves what facebook at the end of the day to care about keep using the add. The other thing, a piece of news, facebook basically said its going to block the ad blockers. So ad blockers on the software you download and basically, it does the actual endpoint, the addresses that were at come from and it basically doesnt bode those in your browser. The way of browsing the internet without loading and add. Historically that was like a minimal usage to like a few Percentage Points but now its like the wall street journal came out with a piece, about a quarter of Internet Users have an ad blocker. Its gone from, the example, retail assumption has like whats called shrinkage, i. E. Shoplifting. Now its like a major problem. Wholesale impressions are being sold to facebook basically said we will block the ad blockers which they can do because they serve the own ads. A piece of software looking facebook can get confused because its all coming from facebook. Its not coming from an ad server. There will be ad blocker blockers and adds blocker blocker blocker. I do think at the end of the day its a minor form of piracy if you run ad blocker. I know it sounds like a douche kind of thing to say. If you know how much work people do to make facebook look, facebook is a quarter of unit everywhere except china. A quarter of the internet. Theres billions of photos uploaded every day. I know that feels like the marginal cost is free but its not free to run. There are anticancer organ whose entire life is basically keeping facebook cool. That is not cheap. If you use it and it feels like its free but its really not. I do think its a form but as i said, just to clarify, it isnt the case and publish it basically dont giv have shit at user experience. In that case i can see a summary tempted to user. I think the Real Progress publishers just dont care. Thats the real problem. Or many publishers dont care. Long answer to a short question. I just happened to move to the rally 66 go to support my husbands job you know me. We tweeted. Its amazing. Im still reading it and its very dark and in a way reminds me of but in a very weird way. My question was are you going to also, thinking about at some point turning out as a movie . Spent ideally but its the only way to make money and books, is to be. The agent is trying to hustle that now. Im only starting to learn this brother so missteps along the way to get a movie made. Basically every movie watch is a minor miracle. To get two movies are so missteps along the way there from no guarantee. I dont know if i wrote this in the tweet by kesha reading the book, so when people told me that bought the book for the founding members. One of the guys in the book opted for his therapist. He said look, this would just save time. Just read the book and then we will talk. I think its been a good, like ecosystem manual like the people around the people who work in tech. I really like what you wrote about axiom. I were to axiom. Cool. If you go to the website you will never forget what axiom does the its a secret company. 1500 piece of data on every consumer, pretty much around the world. Its way beyond what anybody realizes. But anyway, my question is about twitter. What do you think this could happen to the letter . Yap, twitter your yap. The countup is i sold my company to twitter but then i bailed and went to facebook. People who live in a i went back to twitter for two years and help them with acquisition. I was never as a fulltime employee. I dont know them deeply well. I just know some of the members of the ads team. The problem with twitter i think as part of it what facebook has done so well is facebook has collected genius ceo. Hes a force of nature that created this thing that will live on for a long time. I think twitter is missing that level of leadership. The reality is whether at the smallest level, three persons are or even massive level, you need to have someone who can make the company move in some direction. The technical world, its a shame metaphor, its like a ship in a stormy ocean. At some point you to decide to go in this direction or the entire company lives or dies by that decision. It seems to me like twitter has been sitting there spinning its wheels for a long time. The growth problem. Its either growing or its dying. Theres no in between. It seems to be in between those two states right now. So its a little bit worrying. Which is a shame because ago i worked with asking and they were very bright and very forward looking, in many ways more so than facebook. Facebook as the execution. Like somewhat related to twitter, some of the parts of the book, which he described about selling it. I wonder, it seemed like at the time you are thinking hey, this is better for me to go to facebook, like by two cofounders will go to twitter. I forget if its in the book are podcasting seems like they may be made out better in the end. I just wonder what you think about that, like if you would do it differently again or just, i guess thats maybe some other random failure. I actually mentioned that in the epilogue. Its funny, the company we started was literally two blocks that way, i just realized. This is my first time here in somebodys. They did do well. They are still there actually. They are what five, six years and counting, investment was . They did do better the idea. In retrospect, if all of us would about the mantra outcome, then, yeah. The grass is always agree. I wouldve stayed there for years rather than getting chewed up. It wouldve been every different outcome. But this book wouldnt exist. Another one . Spin the fact a lot of [inaudible] maturing in what sense . [inaudible] whats it doing to the start of side . I think its a huge opportunity for start people because then you can eat their lunch, right . Look at Companies Like whatsapp, instagram. Any case of snapchat they couldnt, and there is the they can buy of these companies. I think its nothing but opportunity. With the older generation dies is usually a big opportunity for the younger generation. [inaudible] oh, god, no. I dont think so. Its funny because i thought this would be like professional suicide by the reaction has been way less negative than i thought. I dont have to fleet is being i guess. I guess i could ever want to know well see how long i can do this writer thing. [inaudible] spent if you read to the end you know, my mother died, i had a whole chapter on the mother dying. My editor said youve got to like liars poker to like angela. You just depressed everyone. A massive mother dying thing was gone. It just became like one light in the epilogue. In that experience, i can tell you the story now because we still have time. When your mother dies, the usual thing, misdiagnosed and the like unsuspected stage for liver cancer. You basically watch her waste away and die over four months. Its an encounter like it was this experience, in miami, he had a hallway in a circle with a try to get these poor dying cancer people to kind of walk and moving to some exercise. I was in this case of lack of sleep because youre taking turns watching her mother, whatever. I could have hallucinated it for all i know. I see a young dude who kind of looks like me. Most everyone there is old. This guy looked like me, standard issue, thirtysomething dark like me. He was in that ridiculous down with a little id thing chugging along looking like a little specter of death. For some reason i flashed to the scene in fight club. I see a which they drive into the wrong lane and i went and the brad pitt character as i put in the car, theres a semi coming, if you were to director what would you most regret doing the the agency, build a house, paint a selfportrait. Then the wimpy character breaks out the if youre confronted with the death what would you regret doing . In that moment a feeling us in the headlights walking along with this guy, dont you think i could think of was writing and publishing this book, and the other was finally realizing a childhood dream of cities around the world or across an ocean honest about which a dream i always had. When i was there i have two different oceangoing sailboat ss the work of and prepared adventures basically let it rot at the dock because of this, then it. So i thought that said, its not going to happen again. Whatever it takes a going to do that. Now that ive done item number one i think its time for item number two. Of course i had this other kid, so who knows . I think youll still be the top priority automatic. No, no, no. The kid isnt coming. The mother is not a sailor. I dont think so. [inaudible] thats a total shill question. So theres this race called the global race. Thats a first on human cell around the world alone without stopping the it was held in 1960. Theyre doing everything in 2018 and entered and got accepted but in having second thoughts because its in two years and had to get the boat to the uk and this book is taken a huge amount of time. Even if i dont do the race the plan is still better to sail. To sail to sydney had, where you are from and either continue or sail back. What do you think about the future of Silicon Valley with costs . Duty, i dont know. If you want to go high level on all bernie sanders, i quote in the book, a famous could in future to either telecommute what to do with the computer tells you what to do. If you look at things like, i go to where they pitch of for a while, maybe not so general, everandthe company was basicallg some adequate job. Episode one was using machines and automation to wipe out bluecollar labor are using code to wipe out whitecollar labor. If you read that be imposed that went viral about the impact of autonomous driving, just a concrete case. We will have selfdriving cars in 10 years bigotry the Truck Driving is one of the few jobs that high school educated male in some can feed a family. That jobs going to go with the so isnt the diner waitress and the guy pumping the gas. Thats all going to go away. What happens when that happens . If you think were seeing Something Weird now with trump, just wait until 20 or so that when all the jobs are gone basically. Not just the manufacturing jobs. Not a lot of people i think about that although some people in Silicon Valley. I think questions like that aree the key questions that i think very few people are actually thinking about. Who else . Ask me anything. [inaudible] im surprised no one the negative feedback tends to be a few flavors. Usually its the misogyny thing because they think its a sexist book which for the record i dont think it is about the whole long rabbit hole i dont need to go down. The other thing is that its weird to think they just dont realize, like they either dislike the tone or the negative the other general sociopathic nature of america which to some degree was me at the time. What they dont realize, they dont dislike me or the book the they just dislike Silicon Valley. I just portrayed accurately. Its weird, everyone who was an insider has comments in this is awesome. Its not so awesome. I have ptsd flashbacks. Is like the opening scene of saving private ryan. I did some the people rightly average about and it stressed me out so much because reminded me of like random acts which was like mine or even worse. The insiders love it. A lot of the outsiders hated because they got this beautiful varnished image of how Silicon Valley works. At baikonur to fallacy. They imagine these proud visionaries and perfect Product Market fix and its wonderful. They read this and they feel like they got a seat, like thats not how does. Know, this is how it is. You just dont realize it. A marketing professor danger for being negative or something and its like dude, yeah, so almost all of the negative feedback has been from total Silicon Valley outsiders. I get to get serious troll rahm in silicon outsider. [inaudible] bill boynton agenda book was very positive on it. Chris, you see your . He was not so positive but we are not on a speaking trip anyhow, so whatever. I sent him a copy of the book that i havent heard back. One guy respond in kind of a little defensive but the ultimate he was still positive on the book. He finished it. [inaudible] of course doctor and never include any of this. [inaudible] speak this will be horrible gateway drug that i probably shouldnt say but it turns out theyre kind of like Insider Trading or like hate speech. We use those terms listed by the fact they dont cover very much. They cover like a document recovered off the ceos desk engages them at the time. Things like your personal politics or your personal rock legends, if anything is known to the public which doesnt anyone on the street knows it. It means in some way it was announced it publicly all the data which is totally public. Just openness about it, is not covered. By the way of any Company Partner knows that, so outside of the coverage it barrier has been told but its also not confidential. At the and today there was nothing confidential. The good thing is for all the problems is that you might have it still is freedom of speech and we have really we libel laws which means truth is always defense. If you know anything of what im saying something dodgy, its always in a meeting or the always an email that always be discovered under subpoena or under deposition. There could always be someone who could back it up inside you, that guy said that, done. You can get away with a lot more than you think actually. [inaudible] the only ones i did name by name were the women who were, in a, some slightly compromised position because i didnt want to make a public. Everyone in my circle knows who they are but i did want it to be like a public thing. The women have pseudonyms but everyone else is named by names. [inaudible] i never been so anyone because they would be just like the he said she said in a foreign trying to make their added. I did tell british trader that she was getting mentioned. They were both pretty cool with it. I know both of them. I knew they wouldnt really care, so thats fine. My husband dragged me out of kicking and screaming to south florida. Ive would like to know why this plays out it doesnt have a cool worldclass art seems like miami speak with which is funny. If its a the 20 is, what . But now miami does have a cool art thing. I was there a few years ago to winwood. These bellicose his but then what is amazing is way cooler. What the hell. Up automated gross over generations i would just say. I think, look at Mountain View. Look at palo alto, right . We are living in the elizabethan era of our time. This is the equivalence of florence during the time of leonardo. Does this seem like a culture that invest in longstanding notion of itself . No, of course not. Look at the pastor or even go to new york. Every public building come every school, every hospital is then after some rich douche bag, compete for social prestige by fund hospital. I went to icon hospital. Some ive never walked into a google hospital. There are exceptions. In general i think the notion of giving back is something other started to take as a sort of way of getting that but its not quite like our Navy Building a library in every american town in the are part of the century which it. Some of the most beatable by Virtual Embassy is a carnegie library. Somehow that feeling of giving back are feeling of civil debt or we want to invest in the city does not exist because nobody cares. I dont know the deep recent but thats just a feeling i get. Look around, this does not seem like florence in the 15th century. They are not patronizing michelangelo, thats for sure. [inaudible] right. There are exceptions. [inaudible] sure. [inaudible] sure. Absolutely. To our exceptions. [inaudible] youre right. A different era. Broadly i dont know that thats true. Anyone else . Weve got like five minutes left i think. [inaudible] i dont know. Asked the guys at the back. I will quote one unnamed source. I find it very surprising that things have gone a lot more political. Why the book is interesting is it covers the air from what facebook went to crazy start of giving every political place with a lot of structure is unnamed source said, i think facebook is going to become microsoft before google does actually. I find that very surprisingly. Microsoft, not a good thing in Silicon Valley actually. Any other questions . Are we done . No . Assigning. Sorry. There is a gift or you and your baby spent so nice of you. Thank you. Thats great. I want to thank everyone for coming tonight. To support the store. [applause] speak antonio, thank you.
