Our guest Kenneth Walsh has served as White House Correspondent for u. S. News world report since 1986 with the extensive contact list of washington insiders with historical and contemporary perspectives on defense. He covered reagan, h. W. Bush, clinton, george to be bush and barack obama. Historian brinkley said node journalist day covers politics with this said the same self assurance as is Kenneth Walsh. He received his bachelors end journalism from American University just after graduate school he spent two years as its the u. S. Army. He offered to seven books his latest celebrity in chief was published march of this year. This is to agree to welcome Kenneth Walsh. [applause] thank you for coming. It picked a perfectly raid night my wife is a gardener. Im glad cspan this year i have covered the white house since 1986 amazon is serving White House Correspondents and history but would you are a correspondent you are always looking for ways to see behind the curtain to get a sense of what the president is like i wrote a book about air force one about president s and their homes and a the getaway and what they are like that way with president ial isolation and the current talk celebrity in chief i talk about the development the celebrity culture in the United States how did not only need to be commander in chief and educator in chief but also celebrity in chief. They need to participate in Popular Culture more than ever or be isolated on their own. I distinguish between shallow celebrity and consequential celebrity and my definition is the presence is a consequential celebrity when he or she can channel and expand to enhance themselves personally to call attention to their agenda. The way they do that is three ways to a understand Popular Culture, representing values of the United States such as liberty or strained and some that have done one or the other but fidelity to master the media of the time. President obama is a celebrity today i will get back to him but to look ahead one of the big celebrity moments that we have that is interesting because as i call attention it is said donald trump factor a perfect example of a celebrity politician writing for politicians and i will come back to him. I want to start with history or for celebrity president was George Washington. He was voted twice unanimously by the Electoral College but the man who was considered the indispensable man that person who got United States through the revolution so he was elected president and this is the image that he had but he was depicted as the man who rose above all the problems of the time of war and independence the example is a celebrity for his time when he made his way up to york this is the depiction of him arriving giddy york. Immelt vernon he made his way into the much longer way than expected because it was of a rock star where people wanted to talk to him and he felt an obligation in to talk to every day people. So this is the accurate depiction of when people rode across the river in a barge men with Yellow Jackets made for the occasion and include a what they should call you the president and the model for his successors to know everything he did would be studied by history that all kinds of names but what id like the best was is heidi this and defender of the realm and George Washington said mr. President will be just fine and recall him that ever since. First president for celebrity president. Abraham lincoln, talk about all of them but when he ran he was thought of as a pumpkin a man of the frontier the rail splitter as he was on the frontier at the time and he realized when he ran for president to become a National Celebrity himself with that image that he conveyed. So he realized he gave a speech in n. Cooper union ready set out his views about slavery, the union anwr. He decided he had to take a photo taken for his campaign. Matthew brady was appalled that was not a good looking man so at the time they took some head shots to decide he didnt want to do the head shot because Abraham Lincoln showed up in a wrinkled suit said he pulled the camera back to come up with this picture this is what they used in the campaign. It was very successful, one of the early uses of image of american politics and was distributed all over the country. What can much different he looks now. In may a big impact because they were used to head shots you cannot see the flaws are the wrinkled suit and mathew brady in brady cleverly arranged to have a book on the table your eye is drawn to the book to show this was an educated and smart man and it worked he was elected 1860s. But this was the early use of photography and imaging to enhance the celebrity of an american president ial candidate this pitcher was used after he was elected and grew a beard. But that picture was used for the first year of his presidency and they drove in a billiard it the beginning it was early photoshop eight. [laughter] but this is the image he had as the civil war leader with the enormous setbacks i always like to show the contrast with the presidency does to people this is his first year and turned 84 she was assassinated. Would get the difference. He looks gaunt that looks like ayatollah is taken on him but the image that gave himself for his country and when he was assassinated the image became embedded and he became a father abraham that had almost a spiritual appeal for those who were enslaved to read maya word Abraham Lincoln and throughout our history it became such an iconic figure that going to have been being greeted by washington and the angels. [laughter] this is the way people thought of him particularly after he became a martyr of the country. Fast forward people think the first celebrity couple was john and Jacqueline Kennedy. But that is not completely true the first was cleveland and his wife frances or frankie. He was much older and she was the daughter of one of his law partners and actually he used to babysit her and he married her in the white house. The media was fascinated by this couple was a sensational aspect with the older rand she was very beautiful and accomplished the newspapers gave this seagram is coverage when they were married they tried to honeymoon 100 miles away and the night after their boat up to open the appliance and there were reporters and the trees and behind the bushes with pictures of them and Grover Cleveland never forgive the media for that. This is very elegant and what we think of the Jacqueline Kennedy fact bring excitement the review is at grover and frankly frankie cleveland. When i will fast forward and take up the door roosevelt those that tend to be more easily elected than others. And Theodore Roosevelt understood this that theyve led to the of roughrider calgary unit in the spanishamerican war imposing one dash he is posing with the roughriders in the suspenders and a military uniform, he thought the war were tufted to america to build character he did not think there is a deeply wrong with that he thought it was good to toughen the character and the spirit but when he was elected president young as president was not expected to do much she was lost to the Vice President see because a lot of the republicans wanted to get rid of him. Because he succeeded after mccann they died and understood the importance of celebrity to a channel it and call attention to himself and his agenda. There were ready impacts the of Popular Culture we seem to have stalled. The wheel of fortune is not working. [laughter] we will see if we can get it to work. [inaudible conversations] this is a depiction from a famous incident. Do you remember this . This is the teddy bear. A big game hunter who went hunting in mississippi for bear and could not sure why and so his guide brought to the camp a bear cub to save you wanted to shoot a pair here is. This is a depiction of him in the roughrider uniform to say i will not shoot the little bear the dispute if he kept it to but he made this into a wonderful story his sportsmanship to do the right thing. So enterprising Business People started to rule produce little plush teddy bears and it caught on in that is where teddy bears come from. You can see roosevelts commitment to the celebrity nature of his office. This is him in yosemite. Where he calls attention proved himself and call attention into his desire to save the great open spaces through his own celebrity. This is a wonderful picture of Teddy Roosevelt to recapture here is spirit and personality and i take his daughter captured him in all his majesty when she said her father always wanted to be a baby every christening their pride at every wedding and the court said every funeral. [laughter] his cousin became president 1932 and the picture of optimism and capture that version we will get through the depression to win world war ii. Said he had that notion of capturing this one large value in particular thinking that things will get better and to be optimistic. He called also capture the interest and endorsements from hollywood. He had an enormous amount of hollywood stars who wanted attached themselves to him because at that time movies were so popular to enhance his own celebrity this is an example of what he did it is common today but a hot celebrity would gather on his birthday for the march showtimes you can see oliver and party are there, sitting down is pat obrien and bob hope so it is the celebrity upon celebrity to bring to his or a bit and there was very good for roosevelt. He also understood that sports were so important so he attached himself particularly to baseball and this was is him on his way to a baseball game but this is a way to enhance their celebrity and roosevelt certain they did this as well. He understood the media of his time, in particular radio the time he gave the fireside chats to enhance his own celebrity to. His agenda to new heights of popularity. He had a very distinctive voice as me know if you heard him speak. And he was the courage to speak live. People would walk down the street and had their windows open and you would not miss a word of the fireside chat because everybody was listening and you could hear it from inside the buildings are the windows so they are tremendously popular to understand the importance of communicating directly with the country and of course, this is roosevelt as he moved on and was elected for a term space he did not serve out because he passed away. But he was such a celebrity at the time convincing the people to except a new deal that there was tremendous grief he had a train going from georgia where he died of to hyde park to his estate and there was mourning all along the trade route to and how there was one incident where a reporter can of to a man who was weeping uncontrollably and the reporter said i see how a bushel you are the president has died did you kill him . He said i did not know him best he renewed the and that is a wonderful moment and the president well above to have to be remembered that way. And the president well above to have to be remembered that way. Now this is an interesting enrollment with sugar into succeeded but he did not know how to deal with Popular Culture he was interested in participating ewesism still Vice President and he was asked to play the piano and borba call at the urging of her publicist jumped up on the piano and sat there he doesnt know what to do or where to look so he looks away and later bess truman said dont ever let that happen again stay away from them it is below the stature of the presidency and you were entirely too interested. But he was not a celebrity president in my mind but he became much more revered but in office he did not become a celebrity in chief during that time by president eisenhower was the commander of allied forces and didnt have anything to prove was wellknown and a celebrity when he took office as another military leader. Ziad the eyck jacket a lot of people like that jacket with Popular Culture and he also loved golf and this is the connection into sports he didnt feel like he wanted to participate much but he did love golf seven she wrote a famous essay that every man woman and child should take up golf is crude freer spirit and your health by the time he left office golf was a fad more courses are being built but eisenhower was of the celebrity president that we think of today he wanted to restore normalcy so his successor became one of the biggest celebrities in chief we have ever had i been conceived of glamour and in addition into being a wealthy investor was day producer the father knew about invasion and hollywood and celebrity that it was increasingly important to elect a president said he would talk to his son about celebrity and jack kennedy always wondered with a celebrity was current and powerful and strong . That was to understand the media and keep yourself in the media to associate with figures of Popular Culture, which he did. This is his inaugural dinner with Frank Sinatra to surround himself with stars at the time after a while there was talk of Franklin Roosevelt to his connections to organized crime so kennedy backed away from sinatra but he did have popularity for those that fell he was a celebrity from the beginning to fit in perfectly with the culture of the United States. The only picture i think the existence of body and to jack with Marilyn Monroe after their 11 rose sang to him before his president you may have seen clips where she has saved her coach and a dress she had to be selling into wicked it gave the notion he was a celebrity president because he was part of mass culture but he was very good to enhance his celebrity that way and his conferences were popular as he showed what it and exuberance and wasnt afraid to take questions, stood up to reporters and used schumer so this was an important part of his presidency. He was not above using his family. When jackie was a way he would but the photographers take pictures of him and the kids that they would use to show he is a family man with children. He had trouble in his marriage has been no doubt but he was a good father and wanted people to see you wasnt superficial. The podium at the white house. Sometimes they will let him inside the white house i guess the staff was not too happy but then the famous picture of john, jr. Iran the desk lake the trap door it was widely circulated they would be with their dad while he was working. This was very effective to project him as to enhance his image as a family man that you can connect with. It was the first modern celebrity couple after the cleveland. Johnson takes over after in he was a spectacular congressional leader. Paid to how to get his way on capitol hill with Senate Majority leader johnson was that this ends or wasnt included or culturally in st. With the kennedy crowd so then this huge ego over flood into the be dash all we do if we had the saturation of coverage there would be a difficult time because he was so overbearing. He would invade the personal space to convince the legislation or the goal. You can see he looked scared. But this is what he did it conveyed on television he would be seen like a bully but he tried to keep it behind closed doors but johnson was not as successful as a celebrity president. He didnt understand Popular Culture, wasnt interested in movies or television except news coverage. As time went on his policies were not popular. People thought he was pushing too hard on his social programs for probity and he was the anticelebrity president. He would have violent demonstrations where the only places he could get a speech was a campus or a military base because he would draw angry protesters. This is my era as a young fellow and i can remember the rallies heder lbj how many kids did you kill today . That is tough. He lost touch because the policies were unpopular as the anticelebrity president. The Richard Nixon by the way is the single most requested photograph at the National Archives he wasnt in touch with hollywood or Popular Culture. During the campaign a dignitys 68 he thought he had to become more of a popular figure. Remember that show laugh in one of the skits and jokes the signature phrase was socking it to be. He had to do six takes because he was completely unfamiliar. Said he would do it as the question. Sock it to me . He said the words on camera but it made people say maybe it is a new nixon. Maybe he is more accessible that is the image she had he feels he has to have more contact so did you all this was eager to get into the white house because he admired Law Enforcement he wanted to meet with the president to get their Law Enforcement badge to help track down people who were abusing drugs. He himself was abusing drugs in his medications but nevertheless mixted was unsure if he should be there. What will i say . So they got a picture and the best that nixon could come up with in chitchat and he said you had your audience and i have mine. [laughter] but i really did lose contacted by the end of the presidency he had to resign because he was so isolated he didnt understand how bad that watergate scandal was hurting yquem if he resigned as congress was moving to impeach him. Serrate president reagan was a hollywood movie star a radio announcer in the midwest she went to hollywood to recuse fortune and fame in the movies and succeeded. He was very proactive and understood there was a script being developed about the neuter game Football Team and he decided he wanted a key role and he went to see the producers and got the job and this is a poster from the movie. Obrien played the coach and there was a famous scene for he is dying and he is very sick the cochairman players gather around and ran the boys are up against it please ask them to win one more. That was his political quota and if they needed to motivate his supporters he woulda and if they needed to motivate his supporters he would say were in one for the gipper. It was effective but the Perfect Blend of show business celebrity with political celebrity he understood image more than any president up to that time but this is the kind of thing he would do to pump iron to show he was recovering miraculously from the assassination attempt and it worked. I can remember those days people felt flat was represented himself if he could channel his popularity to his agenda. He did try to bring celebrities into the white house during his time there. Michael jackson. I fame his clothes were more dramatic. They had him in there to honor him for a charitable work so he did try to bring himself into Popular Culture than those he worked with in hollywood and to some extent that was true by the end of his presidency he recognized optimism to make people feel better about him and to sell and the country and he did that thorough his celebrity and the channel that purpose i cannot go to all president s but president clinton and always knew he wanted to go into politics as was the picture when he was a teenager it was called boys state to develop leadership if you go to boise state but he made it to Police Station in data is open the picture with kennedy and save the picture all these years they had used in his campaign realizing it was a connection to another celebrity he wanted to emulate. He did things that candidates have not done like quited playing the saxophone on the arsenio hall show in the republicans started to realize his head of Popular Culture and develops the notion of a new young dynamic leader and president bush the father could not compete to because he was not until Popular Culture at all. He did do it during his presidency but obama does but this was an important moment to jump into Popular Culture and this helped him in the campaign. He takes office and he wins this is the celebration with chelsea and Michael Jackson is back and diana ross and right from the beginning a totally absorbent in Popular Culture touristy he was too focused welcome vague one celebrity after the other a lot of people felt he was captured by hollywood to impress the crowds and restarted to back off because to be part of the celebrity a culture himself. This is a lovely example but debbie had another case were is a National Soap opera because of Monica Lewinsky the president has an affair with spend a whole year to be investigated and clinton and lies about it then he later it quits that he did. And damaged his presidency but said he recovers. , basically people should except that led separate his private character from public leadership in persuades that people do that readymade be a scandal but he is the good president. That is a very important distinction and clinton managed to break that by the end of his presidency he was popular again with job approval up now today the most popular democrat in the country we will see how that plays out. Now turned to president obama with the 2008 campaign the iconic open change poster he was a celebrity from the beginning because the young rand came out of nowhere to defeat clinton for the nomination became the first africanamerican president and a number one he was a celebrity president al remember when he was sworn in on election night. Boy the girls about an older they are young women now but people would hope he would change the culture of washington but he becomes a celebrity from the first day to win the Nobel Peace Prize only six months into his first term and said i havent done anything but he did that on the strength of the interNational Celebrity to bring harmony to World Affairs and listen to other countries celebrities he is another celebrity in chief and has done they said other president s have never done such as participate in Public Events and plays pool , a social media when he is between two firms this was a risk for clinton because the question was reducing the stature as too much of a celebrity . It is a parody of a news interview show to embarrass the cast so he decides to give back to the host as good as he got. But use is the show to call attention to hair is health care lot to get people to sign up and it works tens of thousands of young people signed up so it works so he has done many of these over time to be very active with his own website to have more photographs and i have never seen the white house put up and i am doing this for almost 30 years so a very aggressive to portray clinton as celebrity in chief to understand Popular Culture very close to the Entertainment Industry and Bruce Springsteen and Oprah Winfrey so in example of how winfrey so in example of how he has done this now talking about the campaign but to leave you with the idea that president s will have to do what obama has sent to participate in Popular Culture because the country is so fragmented those who may be aware like me will not be getting information the apply the same token they may not be interested at all in a journalist to plague me so obama understands this i dont think republicans understand as well as they need to. But the one that does is donald trump. But now the campaign. Hillary clinton when she was at wellesley as a college student, she understood she wanted to be a new leader of her generation and the lindner of women. Leader of women. She rand in 2008 and lost to barack obama but despite that she got the reputation to be a superstar. Says she is already a celebrity politician to be first lady, the best known woman in the United States states, a senator from new york, the secretary of state , she also has connections positive and negative to president clinton and her husband now she a has to deal with him and his agenda or dishy emulate him and also brought obama who is the current celebrity in achieving it could be like to positives says she has difficulty to decide how much she should stand apart to be her own person verses be close to their agenda she has departed from both in significant ways said she is trying to stand tall but that is part of the reason she is stalled in her popularity because people cannot figure out what she is trying to do as she moves along as a candidate. Surgeon they a celebrity because not figured out how to enhance her celebrity but how to use it for positive purposes she has not done that so well and is the year is not as comfortable as her husband Edgar Barack Obama with different types of media or image making techniques. Every means to be seen. I thought this fellow would be the big celebrity coverage jeb bush people feel that they dont want another bush in the white house but he has the celebrity but she has dropped from 30 nationally dash nine 7 and doesnt seem to know how to deal with his celebrity that people Pay Attention but he is having a difficult time to confer into positive gains. To confer into positive gains. Donald trump. This is the guy is amazing with his candidacy has done he starts off a realestate developer, then a tv star on a reality show. The apprentice san this is the image he brought into the campaign and youre fired was his signature phrase. He cements his image there is always a humiliating moment he would fire somebody said he tries to run for president and i just wrote a column if you put together all of the 01 lenders and insults and starkey commons, it is quite a list of people he has alienated. Latinos, media, fox news he says he only counterpunches. He does is start the fight but he finishes it by leveling his opponents but he does that in a personal way and we may get that where people feel enough is enough antaeus starting to realize that because in addition end to the rallies to do generate enthusiasm he also has just come out with a tax plan to show he does have specific policy ideas he is not just a celebrity but a case where an overflowing amount of stardom and he has not been able to do a channel that to make cans they like a serious candidate. He is the master of the media he hasnt really capture the ideals of the country to make them consequential, but he does participate. He used the twitter system are brilliantly because he gets paid media he stays up that night apparently in see is what people have said then he tweets that get tremendous coverage. Made hejaz puts out a treat and others are in dirtying. Of this is him with them make america emigrate slogan blub lovelock carly fiorina, the former hewlettpackard have moved up but one other quick point reduce all three of the top candidates for the nomination and it will never be so they will end up with the white house picture. So in conclusion and we will take some questions it is vital that the candidates and the president s understand theyre nodents understand theyre not just political leaders or policy makers the country expects the president to be entertaining and people are troubled by this but the limited Attention Span people want the president to be a celebrity in chief there participate in Popular Culture and can use that to his or heard bettman dash a vintage by putting it into positive directions to enhance their own positive traits but it takes a lot of effort and has to be a priority and i think this is the challenge for the next president eric be happy to take some questions with that. Did get assistance with your research . My wife who could not be here tonight is my research ladies so i have the inhouse billion to researcher. [laughter] i give her full credit is should be on my books for being the indispensable partner but it is great to have the research in the family. You mentioned and the republicans dont seem to be adept at leveraging pop culture will this change well is there a push back to undermine that . Republicans done saved to be as good as for dissipating. But bregenz could do it but i take leave realize when eight do that that is from a was elected he would have difficulty doing this he comes budget but they have to go on to the latenight shows the successor of jimmy phelan nor campbell and its bid says not as difficult as they used to be. There is not necessary litus selvage the president of lot of people did not realize that and try to embarrass the cast by being here is a synergy there that shows the dollar to be seen as nasty people so the republicans still have an opportunity because their natural instinct to feel this participation lowers the stature in the dignity of the office has worked against them doing this in a way that will help the metadata they will get over that because it is necessary to play on that rule of celebrity in chief and some will have to learn. That celebrity culture is a president ial medal of freedom there is a lot of awards for prominent americans spent specifically that president ial meddling. Day variate could question to recognize people for their contributions to is the culture and this is something obama has done very well the intersection of a celebrity in politics and policy knbc in analog to of these awards ceremonies. So that ties him into this popularity. She wants the White House Open to everybody including africanamerican kids. That is more of a subtle aspect, but the president tries to connect with people in the white house which he has done very successfully. He wants to apply techniques that are going to last. As a prelude, my wife and i are going through this Historical Society monograph. Who would you consider amongst our witty president s. Can you think of whom impressed you with your wits and why . Intelligent wits, that adjective throws it off a little bit. Kennedy was a very urbane guy. [laughter] i think of the president s, ive covered five president s, president reagan could do that. Pres. Reagan had been in an entertainer and he understood crowds and giving speeches. He gave thousands of speeches to private citizens and love to do it. Thats half the battle that they have to love to do it. He would write down jokes. It was discovered not too long ago in his archives, file cabinets filled with three x five cards of jokes. Thats all they were. Two or three lines. Jokes about the soviet union or books or whatever. Reagan was good at it. Some of his jokes dont hold up as good as they did at the time but some of them were really funny. Till clinton was not good at delivering jokes. He was a very good speechmaker but he wasnt a good joke teller neither were either of the bush president s. Obama can do okay. He really tries. Every president has access to the best joke writers in the world. They are only too happy to write jokes for the president s. Its up to the president to use them. As far as natural wit, it would be hard to beat kennedy. He really was good at it and was very urbane and im not sure everyone understood the humor he was conveying but he could do it very well. At a very popular level, i think think reagan was good at it too. Can you make some comments about air force one and the president . I i wrote a book about air force one as not the topic of my subject tonight but ill be happy to talk about appeared air force one and what the president s are like aboard the plane. Its the most iconic aircraft in the world. This is where president s can let their guards down and be themselves. Theres many stories about the plane and what you learn about them. Some president s were much more private and public than they are in the plane. When youre in the press corps, we rotate around and everybody gets a turn. I happen to be on. Interesting trips. There was 11 where we were coming back from australia and this is by way of not the hardware of the plane but the president s and what theyre like behind the scene. Thats a 22 hour flight. About halfway through it im in the press compartment and youre not allowed out of the press conference in less than one escorts you so you are stuck in there for however long the flight is. Ten hours into the flight all my colleagues are sleep. The lights are out. Im standing there, i cant sleep and im trying to figure out how to spend the next 12 hours. Then i hear hi kid, how you doing. It was bill clinton. He was there and in a tshirt and jeans and sneakers. He was a night owl and he just wanted to talk to somebody. Thats all it was. All his staff was exhausted. He went through one compartment to another just to see who was awake. I was awake. So he came through the back through the galley and so my question was then do i wake up the other reporters and cameras would come on and it would come a big Mini Press Conference or do i just let him talk and i briefed everybody later. What you think i did . Well i had my 45 minutes with the president and nobody woke up during the whole time. So after he left people woke up and said where is he . Well then i brief them. Thats the kind of stuff you see on air force one when you let your guard down with president reagan you saw his engagement with people. You talk about the leaders he met on the trip. He talked about snugly in australia and holding a baby kangaroo. That was with president clinton. Youll get that often on air force one where he is willing to talk to people. President obama does not like to talk to us on the plane. It doesnt happen very often. President bush, the sun, didnt like that either. Reagan sometimes did but president bush and his son dont like to talk to us on air force one. Theres a lot of difficulty that they have in the media. You can see the president s let their guard down but again, i have a a lot of stories in the book. For now the clinton story is a good one to illustrate what you can learn about president s aboard the plane. Anyone else . My next book topic . . Well i have a contract for a book and that will be on white house staff photographers as the ultimate insiders. These are the photographers at the white house that they paid to take pictures of the president. Nobody else gets to go to the events they get to go to. Sometimes they are alone with the president and if they do their job well the president forgets they are there. They have wonderful stories about what theyve learned about president s and historic moments and so on. That book will lend itself to a lot of using of photography. Its not news photographers its the staff photographers that will probably come out in about two years. Did you have something . I was hoping you could enlighten me a little bit about why, theres usually some kind of substance that these celebrities have to say. Why does the media pick up so much on the lack of substance of the most outrageous thing . Is it just insatiable as him or is there some piece that i am missing there . I think there was a question about why does the media focus on the superficial or the inflammatory things about a president and i think part of is being human beings, think sometimes the superficial stuff is more interesting. Sometimes its more calculated. Sometimes they think it will get more clicks or more page views are more ratings or whatever which in many cases is true. So like why would a journalist talk about how gray obamas hair is getting as opposed to his dealings with vladimir putin. Its just that one thing is more accessible. One thing is easier to cover frankly. You just sort of talk about the story and you give your opinion about it. I think its basically driven by what interests people in the issue of entertaining their audience or educating them. I think in attaining them is what wins out sometimes. Thank you so much for coming. I have some books to sell you in the corner. [applause]. You are watching book tv, television for serious readers.
