The Providence Journal and my great publisher of Public Affairs this is my third book with them and they are the best. Also would have attended if he hadnt planned to be out of town. We spent untold hours at the keyboard with a knock on the dollar or with no interruptions with this honshus sometimes even in your sleep. Over the choice of the word the smoothest of the narrative with too little detail and then ends up on the cutting room floor. To understand the dialogue is crucial and yet you still use them and then you hope your editor can snap you out. When is still fresh riccio for those the told der and if they tolerate it that is more than i would do in their shoes. This is where i imagined i would say. So a day like today working in publishing and just have a good time with family and friends. And my wife who is beyond understanding is that when they break away from their writing. And in the spring of 190545 days in two hours but they and you for everything. To live with my passion for many years from when they were little kids. Sorry to be present when they begin their day and then a shot out. [inaudible] and then to scientifically demonstrate unlike any technology with the exception of the printing press. And the internet and the iphone does not compare. More than 250 million vehicles registered in 1. 2 million or more worldwide. This continues to power Major Centers of national economies. It injures and killed in such horrifying numbers the gas powered version contributes to global warming. Some of the ugliest corporate scandals in history most recently general motors. I had a black sedan and i should not have been but i was speeding. And it felt great. The automobile was born with contention as the horseless carriage proliferated. Literally day took aim. Tin cans to regularly make the front page of the new york times. For those who oppose the automobile. In 1902. The legislatures municipal count where supplies farmers use the guns with the speed levels or Traffic Control then they argue liabilities for the fatalities and if they should beat dale but like the farm boy from michigan so i will read a little bit. This is the opening of car crazy. There is a time when sane people do crazy things. On january 930 miles northeast of detroit the possibility he could spin out of control. But it did attract a crowd. As the players gave the afternoon off mesmerizing us city. Ford was a skilled marketer. He knew the machine powers unlike anything before with the latest tactical to have an automobile of their own also anchored that was alienating other people. And almost everyone would cover around. Henry ford would attempt to lower the record. Of a straight track of the hotel chesterfield. The races will started 2 00 and then continue it proposes to make a mile in 36 seconds and that was set in 1903 it would be faster than anyone ever moved. Those with the gray eyes and nose and those that was building and driving since 1896 when it was little more than a dream. Before it incorporating onethird in 1903. Board should have been destined like appears but even as a young child bided time he was a teenager at first it was the watches and the clocks to repair. That not long after he took the time to explain the mechanization is to the board. They already knew about the race cars the greatest american race car driver a man even more daring than ford. He had never driven a Motor Vehicle of any time seeking publicity at a second attempt but at the time for himself was larry saying he would try anything once. Than with the challengers cup with the home of Harness Racing even with its quirky features. It is only a week to teach him to drive. All he had to learn was how to control the monster meaning specifically without rolling over. Old field said this cheery it may kill me but i was going like hell when i went over the bank. [laughter] already against the automaker who until then was thought to be invincible. Driving it to World Records and a few weeks later he just past the leader with a tire exploded killing a spectator from ohio. Escape by a miracle that more people were not killed or maimed is hard to believe. He would leave and kill many more. And then to take the starting five in milwaukee but approved too much to manage and he spun out. Grinding him into the ground. For those who did not share the enthusiasm with influential politicians it was new cause for condemnation. The with cop the Wisconsin State Journal it as the world around the track impelled him as the soldiers would go to a certain death. Were not close enough for those royal blood it cattle. There was disquieting of the setback in add further use of the awesome power. In closing let me express my gratitude to god these incredible classic cars to these events the ambassador who bought the replica from the 1912 model that is a gorgeous red car. But the 1912 packers then the 1904 oldsmobile that crossed from manhattan to portland one of the many in ventures that the chronicle is in car crazy. Now i will sign books in the lobby in a few minutes and around 3 30 p. M. So stick around and watch some cool cars. Ill be happy to take questions. [applause] why did you write the book . I learned about the race in 1905 from manhattan to oregon in many years ago. And it intrigued me. With the idea you could cross the continent in a competition seemed preposterous. Well look began as a look specifically. That became one of the narratives of the book. And how it impacted society or culture eyelet dash pretty much every automobile publication produced during that time. So long story short i like to tell stories. Have you ever fallen in love with a car . And what kind . I have with many cars. I fell in love with those first car that is the 1953 ford. And then spending entire year embedded with a couple of other people and during that year the smi crosscountry race that started in tenn. Winding up in kentucky. He brought along the stage for a mustang. A superpower car. This car you touch the gas pedal and you were airborne. I drove into louisville kentucky you will have to read the book there is the guy in the minivan and he got in front of me. I said i can smokey bigtime. And i did. To save their proven your point slowdown. [laughter] and there were others as well and i like a lot. What about the two european this . I drove that the first drive is in washington i like the prius. I like the concept. It handles well. I never really like the styling but stylistically i think toyota is so gifted to design automobiles they could have done better but it is a good car reducing carbon emissions. [inaudible] that is an interesting question. One of my Research Objectives is the first top sign, the first traffic light, there is a long list the first license, the first driving school established and so on. As mentioned earlier all the hours that your keyboard. Because much of what you need is now a accessible but i shied away at first because i came across that but i would shy away as devastating away more research but to have a long proud history and those that would parade their cars around. At the beginning of your talk how many of those changes in the way we relate to each other as people . , those were aware or not looking that far ahead . Certainly of 8093 the first was the replica. There were people during the 15 year period now day free that the small end of the fumes would harm the planet . No. But they knew there is something about the exhaust that was bad. But have made the streets look smoggy. They didnt know that exhaust could kill you with the impact of society to predict in some fashion that is why it is so contentious on some level. It is like the iphones and everyones pocket. But the automobile can be in everyones street every farmer can see it go across. Of course, many people would love it. It is in their presence in a way that nothing had been before. I am fascinated to be much more productive in any way that i could imagine. One as it relates to you how you have managed of whittiers right teethree these books. Second, how many are willing to indulge . And what i alluded to in my talks at 430 or five and i pretty much right seven days a week. I think a lot of people do that butted terms of the second question i still firmly believe in very few who would disagree so that is not done as often certain publications we have a lot of ways to tell stories. So i think that condition additional continue as you sit around a fire then to say thank god that you did. That is what i believe. At the end of the book to teach those parallels looking beyond cars with those legal implications like bicycles or other means of transportation. As other items come into the picture . It will not go away and it shouldnt. But there is a lot of talk about self driving cars the we are increasingly shifting to the up hybrids and electric. Where we have to change and how many people use them is either because they dont choose to a lot of cities have no Rapid Transit of any kind. I dont see any other technology. That is a very good question. My favorite car now . Now it is the toyota camry but today it is the 1904 oldsmobile. [laughter] get 20 miles an hour so there is no worries for a public figure for that question. Driving a highperformance car if you had a choice and as a good stereo system which car would you choose . Which what i choose . Whichever was on the i think it was a ford would i would follow nascar i would love it. Is the adrenaline rush. It was cool and will blow your years apart among other things. Can you need water to people who help to inform . With interviews along the way. I spent some time in detroit to the archive and research center. Even the people at the Detroit Public Library were healthful. Even afterwards. With the antique Automobile Club ended many different ways to find that in google books or periodicals. There were a lot of other people along the way. That was incredibly helpful and writer friends. But with the original source material i named the main ones. Mine is the 1950 chevy truck. But i do have a question. What is the topic for your next book . Im not sure. I will tell you i have been working on a novel 20 years. The essence of the book is solid and i hope to finish sunday and when i am finished with this i will dived back into that. How long does it take . That his rival put my next significant effort. But at this point in my career i dont care. I have to finish this book. [laughter] but that is where i am going. What about the selfie driving cars . But i like to drive. I dont think like the idea of the selfie drive the car. It is it helpful but a lot of people like to drive on the open road. I cant totally relate to that. You could have the option to drive without the software but there are times it is great to have it drive you. I have to go shopping. Take me to the marketplace where you cannot do 80 miles an hour coming over the bridge. [laughter] then you want to have that power and then you control it. Not the software. Got for their car crazed individuals. But when did they make the transition . And then to go over to the Diesel Engine . Day you know, anything about that period . I am disappointed because they did not have the cover for the motors. Of paramount of that history was all happening in the 15 year period i was writing about. The electric car that was invented the early part of the 19th century pretty much lost during that period this a reason theyre having trouble being widespread that the batteries dont hold the charge that they wanted. So good luck trying to find someplace to charge that. So for practical reasons and stupid corporate decisions electric vehicle basically died. But this team powered automobile during that same period continued but it also began to decline because it was so cheap to go so well and they scared people they would blow up sometimes. To have a giant tea kettle the use it on it. There is a publicrelations problem and the manufacturers tried to redress that as well. Looking at the biggest auto show was at Madison Square garden at the army regiment. M looking carefully at the cars that were displayed each year in the three categories. And even that period it was headed down. I hope that answers your question. [applause] at 3 30 p. M. We will run these cars. Please enjoy. [inaudible conversations] [inaudible] for the Harvard Law School library i would like to welcome you to read series of book talks i direct though library here and a current colleague in a spiritual sense a student of his thought it isnt just a book talk but it is the republic lost 2. Go. [laughter] still in t
