[applause] just want you to know that hernandez in the 90s more than 25 years ago when i was chairman of the president s council of physical fitness and sports invited me to come down to the youth center in there he showed to me the computer programs that have, the homework assistance programs they have, the sports programs, boxing, weightlifting, bodybuilding, basketball and the staff and then he invited me to come to the summer games where he came up with this idea to have gave throughout the summer since the kids have some paid to do. Thousands and thousands of kids here. Thats what i learned for the first time about Afterschool Programs. Danny, thank you for exposing me to Afterschool Programs, educating me about Afterschool Programs and inspiring me to do something for my community. Thank you for being such a great inspiration. Thank you for being here today. Thank you very much. I just want to tell you that you are all doing a really fantastic job. Before you sit down, i just want you to know how much i appreciate the work you are doing. You are all providing great Afterschool Programs for those kids. 10. 2 million kids. That means not just a classier end of class there. We are talking about three hours every day, five days a week from 3 00 to 6 00. For every dollar you spend in an Afterschool Program, you save 3 to 6 down the line. When we give you because of the fiscal responsibility by 1 dollar spent the day since the dollars to 6 down the line. So this is really extraordinary. But the bottom line is we always need more help because we know 20 million kids are waiting to get into the Afterschool Programs because we know 70 of the kids come from homes with both parents working. They are not there in the afternoon after 3 00. Those kids need help. This is why so important that all of your select good fund raising and raising more money. Get more kids involved in Afterschool Programs. But then you ask yourself the question, why does the president of the United States cant Afterschool Programs and cut the kids out of their budget 1. 2 billion. President trump promised as he wants to make America Great again. That is not how you make America Great. By taking 1. 2 billion away from the children and robbing them wind. Blind. [applause] why would she do that . Why would you want to balance the budget on the backs of those kids . Kids are the most vulnerable citizens. Kids are our future. We need them. Thats what i say every time you spent money on the skids widely. This is why it is so great to have all of you because when i look out there, i see crusaders. I see warriors. I see a bunch of terminators. Because they know we are not going to take this lying down. We are going to washington and bobby had talked to the democrats and republicans because this is not a party issue. This is a peoples issue. We talked to both of the parties and make sure that money goes back into the budget. That is the bottom line. We can do it and we will do it. Thank you very much for your knowledge and our program. Youve been a governor. You the path of billion dollars in your first ballot measure to these causes and yet you are still fighting. I just want to give you the honor you deserve because people dont do what you do. Do anything you want to do. [applause] that said, let me ask you a couple tough questions. Are you spoiling the skids . Be honest. You, yourself, her modest background. Nobody gave you a big Afterschool Program. You get out there, you figured out a way, you almost invented by the building. He transformed the whole field. You werent i need a program. So what you spoiling the skids . Should they go do it like you did it . I know exactly what your question is that i have to tell you that i was spoiled myself because today we have to organize Afterschool Programs because like i said, both at the parent are working in hospitals. I grew up especially oster appeared it was very uncommon that both of the parents are working. I didnt even never hear that. Most of the people, the mother stayed home and cooked. My mother was a traditional house. Was all about providing food issued the card in, vegetables, all these kinds of things and then cooking up a storm. In the afternoon when he came home, she was there and she made sure that we did our homework and she was tough. Really, really tough. If you didnt do your math. You cant do it. I tell you that she was there. She helped us with a homer. She was a very well read wanted and educated in so she could help us with homework all the time and in the afternoon, my father was a police officer. He then went to the sports field, the soccer field and worked with us and coach dustin shakur. In winter you adore ice cream in the dust, ice skating. Literally from morning until night, the coaches and teachers and parent, there was someone there 24 hours a day and this is why i am here today because i had that kind of upbringing. This is why i became a fanatic. When i was the chairman of the President Council on fitness and even before he met jimmy fernandez, went to all 50 states promoting health and wellness of the schools. I saw hundreds of kids sent outside and they were just standing around. The periods are working. Theres no one for the kids. I started thinking, i feel sorry for these kids they dont have someone there helping them with homework. Theres no one here that picks them up and takes them to the sports field, no one dared to be music, art, painting, whatever it is they do. I want to give anything back to this country. Its one of the things i can do to get back to my community, my state i started an Afterschool Program. The same time he started showing a delay on how to do it. [applause] thats beautiful. You know, my dad was born poor and he said the liberals and the conservatives get it wrong. He said the liberals think you can get somebody money and stop them from being poor. But if you are still pouring your heart, skills, selfesteem, you might not be broke, they could be broke again tomorrow because you really have to climb that ladder yourself. At the same time, conservatives get it wrong because even some could i find the latter out of poverty on their own affair, they have to make sure theres a ladder for them to climb. You are building ladders and we appreciate that. Thank you. I cannot stress enough that you and i talked about how important it is that we Pay Attention to our kids. They need the help. Imagine how many kids are falling behind in education. They cant keep up because everyone has different abilities. They dont have anyone to help them. What we do in our Afterschool Programs and why this is so important is to give them tutoring. So in the afternoon to come to the Afterschool Program that are falling ahead in math, get tutoring in math. Maybe from germany for some
