Biology is doing very well and that might be a path to premed but also path to a lot of interesting things like biotech. Some others, physics has declined somewhat but physics is never the most popular class on campus. Guest if you look at what they call the physical science which is science minus biology theres a huge drop and part of it is we are not funding basic research. Thats more of a problem. Again its about not making the investments that are going to keep us prosper strong and free a generation down the line. Host when he are going to for congress he can change that . Uni will not be able to change that dynamic im afraid. Really its a political solution. I absolutely agree. Guest no individual i think five years ago, three years ago no one could have foreseen the Movement Towards minimum wage raising minimum wage in getting the kind of traction we have gotten in the last election that just passed since the red states. I think free or lowcost public yet needs to be put on the agenda next to raising the minimum wage as a way of addressing the enormous problem of inequality that we have finally woken up to in this country now that the debt bubble that is popping up in our prosperity as burst. Everyone is looking around the room in realizing we have a huge problem of inequality and social mobility so that means raising minimum wage and making education accessible again. Host theres an organization that has a terrible name. Its called redeeming american americans americas fathers. It was started by a former aide of president gore and some political friends and this is their agenda. Free public higher ed. The movement is starting and i want more people to know about it. Im not going to be a politician or even an organizer but organizing is what people need to do and again i want parents to make the connection between what happens to them as taxpayers and what happens to them as tuition payers into no that they have a stake in resurrecting public higher ed. I think parents if anyone is going to make changes is going to be parents acting as a group because they are set up as many of them are with what is happening with their kids, the crazy pressure their kids are suffering under. Theres a documentary called the race to nowhere that has been circulating in communities for a long time. It is shown in high schools and parents come and they talk about it. It was made by a woman in the bay area who is actually a lawyer and her exciting moment was when her fourthgrade son was complaining of a stomach ache because he was so stressed about how much homework he had. She said you know theres a problem. So thats what im talking about. Thats where the change will come if it comes at all. Host it comes to more economically advantaged neighborhoods i think. Guest absolutely. She is a lawyer. Host on the political side what do you defund and what do you not find and when you redirect funds to Public Education . Guest . Host do you think that message will go over well with everyone in america . Guest im just a limit to remember the reagan revolution. Nobody in their right mind would have ever imagined that happened 10 years before it happened that we would drop rates from 72 to 20 to 35. The one thing im certain about with respect to the future is that we cant be certain about the future. Things are possible today like raising the minimal wage minimum wage will be possible tomorrow. There are plenty of things we spend too much money on my person defense or corporate welfare but our tax rates are at historical lows. The top 10 and that includes me and that includes you and many people we know and its at historic highs. We are talking about a transfer of a couple trillion dollars a year from the bottom 90s to the top 10 . Thats a tax target we need to go after. I dont think well ever have enough money for public needs until he do. Host i think Public People in Public Education will thank you and others will say its an impossible mandate. Its a dilemma and its very difficult. Guest yeah it is. Host of course you know that. At the same time the private schools will continue to exist and they will charge hefty tuitions and they will be robust and have high demand. I dont think thats going away. Those are separate tracks. Guest its part of the two americas we are creating. People live in gated communities and send their kids to private schools and universities and they go to yale. I know this is a cliche but this is the country we live in. I certainly think most people are on the short end of the stick. Host there arent enough purpose positions thats for sure but a lot of people we do with our improved its positions and their families are. Guest absolutely. Host all these students have a right to be there so i dont want to disenfranchise them and i want to say that someone just to disadvantaged can be a apart of our ecosystem. The balance. Guest lets be honest. You cant afford to. Guest no question about it. Host i want to thank you for this robust and stimulating conversation and all i can say is im looking forward to your next book. Guest okay, thank you very much. Host thank you
