Time is not a luxury for state and local law enforcement. Crime victims or communities cant afford it. Our laws require speedy trials. Criminals have to be held accountable, but victims are as we speak and we know in this audience asking for justice. Rep. Goodlatte thank you, mr. Vance. We will now proceed with questioning of the witnesses under the five minute rule. I will begin by recognizing myself. Director komi created a dichotomy between this being a Technology Problem or a Business Model problem and said that apple was addressing this as a Business Model problem. Is that a fair contrast or is this Something Else . Mr. Sewell it is by no means a fair contrast, mr. Chairman. Ive heard this phrase before. In sanbeen raised bernardino and every time i hear this, my blood boils. This is not a marketing issue. That is a way of demeaning the other side of the argument. We dont put up billboards that market our security. We are doing this because we think protecting the security and the privacy of hundreds of millions of iphone users is the right thing to do. That is the reason we are doing this. To say that its a marketing ploy or somehow about pr really diminishes what should be a very serious conversation involving this congress, stakeholders, the American People. With respect to the new york case, judge orenstein last night took on this issue head on and 40 that i reject the governments claim. And that i find that the activities they are taking conscientious and not with respect to pr or marketing. Rep. Goodlatte director comey and mr. Vance seemed to suggest that the security provided on prior devices is fine. But advancing Encryption Technology is a problem. What do you think about that . Mr. Sewell its important to understand that we have not started on a path of changing our technology. We have suddenly come to the notion that security encryption and privacy are important. Apple began back in 2009 with our encryption of face time and i message. We have been on a path of generation to generation as the software and the hardware allow us to provide greater security and greater safety and privacy to our customers. What happened between ios seven and ios eight is that we were able to transform the encryption outgrowth of is used within the software and the hardware the phone to provide a more secure solution. Rep. Goodlatte we are moving to end to endtoend encryption on many devices and apps, not just apple iphones. Why is that happening . Mr. Sewell i think its a combination of things. From our perspective at apple, its because we see ourselves as , ing in an arms race an arms race with criminals, cyber terrorists, hackers. We tried to provide a safe and secure place for users of our devices to be assured that their information cannot be accessed, cannot be hacked or stolen. From our perspective, that endtoend encryption move is no effort to improve safety and security of our friends. From the terrorist perspective, i think its an effort to communicate in ways that cannot be detected. Cannot be detected. But the terrorists are doing this independently of the issues we are discussing here today. Fbi succeeds in getting the order, that is in dispute, that apple has appealed to a final resolution, however long that takes, and they then get apple to develop this 10 timeshat will allow all of us here, we cannot turn that off. Inside our firewall, we cannot do that. The reason but that creates a separate vulnerability for people whose device falls into othershands, they could try 10 times. But be that as it may, if they were to get you to develop that code, and apply it and then to crack and get into the device, once they get in there, they could find all kinds of encryptions apple could have no control over, with regard to various other Communications Features that the consumer may have chosen to put on there is that correct . That is absolutely right. Telegraph can be on any phone, nothing to do with apple. It could be loaded either on the internet or outside of the country. This is a method of providing uncrackable communications. If what happens here is apple is forced to write a new operating system to degrade the security to phones belonging to tens of hundreds of millions of people, it will weaken our safety and security but not affect terrorists in the least. Former first Lady Nancy Reagan has died. She died in her home in los angeles this morning. The cause of death listed as congestive heart failure. As first known project lady was the just say no campaign to help kids stay off of drugs. The former whoto died in 2004. Nancy reagan was 94. Cspan, mrs. Reagan gave a tour of the Reagan Library in california. This is about one hour. [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Visit ncicap. Org] [captions Copyright National cable satellite corp. 2016] for somebody who has not been to this library, how do you get hair, where is it . It sits high on 100 acres. It is not too far from los angeles. We can leave our house and the be here in 45 minutes. It is beautiful. Everybody should come to see it. One of the things that struck me after being at the ranch was the winding roads, the hills. Did you think about that . Mrs. Reagan ronnie always liked to be high. Shining city on the hill. Our house in bellaire is high. The ranch is high. This is high. That always appealed to him. He could never live in the valley. When you thought about this library, what was your objective . Mrs. Reagan our objective was to have his legacy here. He wanted very much to have everything here so that people could see and read all of his papers and see the history of him and me, but mostly him. It is here for everybody. When you see the early years, what comes to mind . This is where ronnie was born. He was born above the store. A small little room. He and his brother, there were very close in age, two years apart. And his mother and father. Two years apart. And his mother and father. Have you been there . Yes. And over here . The eureka sweater. His mother and father, his brother. That is at school. Grade school . Yes. There is ronnie putting his hand up to his chin. That little girl down there, he had a crush on that little girl. He asked me, which girl do you think i had a crush on . I said that one. He could not remember her name. When he was growing up in illinois, you grew up how far from the dictionary of . Dixon area . I grew up in chicago. He loved those summers when he life guarded. He always said that he did not have to worry about money because he could not spend the money. He would go into the earlymorning and work until late at night. He never had a chance to spend the money. Did you know his parents . I knew his mother. His father died very young, 58. It was before i knew ronnie. Anything you see here from these early years, just holler. Were going over to the hollywood years. There has been so much talk about this movie. I thought the movie was funny. I thought it was cute. Bedtime for bonzo. What year was it . I do not know. What was his first year for acting . What was your first year . To ask me years is fatal. My first year was, had to be 49. I had been in theater before in new york. What was it that got you interested in movies and acting . My mother was an actress. I had gone to college and graduated and had not found the man i wanted to marry. I did not want to sit in chicago and do nothing. I became an actress. Any picture your favorite . This is our first visit to new york after we were married. I was so excited. Did he change from that day as he got older . Never. Ronnie stayed the same all the time. He never changed. How many movies . 11. Did you act together . Once. It was fun except there was a scene, he played a man in service and i played a navy nurse. There was a scene where he was supposed to be telling me goodbye. We had not been married too long. I took it all very seriously. I started to cry. They had to keep reshooting it. There is a picture want to ask you about. Youve got to president reagan here, jack benny, george burns did you know all these folks . I did not know al jolson. I knew jack benny, george burns, and Ronald Reagan. I did not know what this was. Right over here this was a favorite picture of mine. Clover cleveland. I love that picture. I want to ask you about this picture with president truman. He was a big fan of truman. Are people surprised when they find out . Yes. What did he like about him . He thought he was strong and direct. He just liked him. Were you interested in politics . I was not. I knew nothing about politics. Or your mother and father political . Not really. Do you remember the first time you got interested . After i married ronnie. He was always involved in politics. He would always go out and campaigned for whoever. In those days, he would get in a car and drive to wherever the event was. Never occurred to him to ask for gasoline money. Right behind you, pictures of your husband with a lot of leading ladies. Is it hard to watch your spouse in some of these scenes . No. Yes and no. No. He always talked about the actress who would get leading ladyitis. This is taking out our marriage license. How many years ago . 47. It will be 48 in march. Lets move over to the inauguration years. Before we get there, lets go to the governors time. The years youre in sacramento, what were they . Eight years. They were wonderful years. They were wonderful and they were difficult because that was during the 1960s and berkeley and there were difficult years. Pat brown wanted ronnie to win the primary because he thought he would be easiest to defeat. It turned out to not be so. These are the p. O. W. Bracelets. That is Lieutenant Commander john mccain. When they first came back, we had dinners for the first ones to arrive back. I had some wonderful presence they would give me. Some brought me the tin cups they ate from or a package of cigarettes. To hear their stories, you cannot believe what they went through. Unbelievable. He thought to yourself, you wondered if you would be in the same spot, if you could withstand that. I do not know. Lets go on to the inauguration. 1981, you remember what you felt like standing there . An emotional moment for me. It was like we got married. I remember very little. I did not even remember when the man said i pronounced him man and wife. I wish we could run it all over again. Can we do it all over again . Do you feel the sense of the reins being passed on when you are standing there . I do not think it hits you until after the parade and you walked into the white house for the first time and then it hits you. What kind of things would he talk about . At the beginning of all of this. Was he excited about it . He was excited, yes, of course. The parade and seeing people, the groups that were in the parade. Our friends all being there. Theyre only 39 people who had never done that. There is a button right over here that has to do with the hostages that day. Yes. The hostages were released. He did not announce it until we went in for lunch because he wanted them to get out of the iranian airspace. When did you know that was going to happen . We did not know until it was after the swearingin. He could not announce it, did not want to announce it until they were out of iranian airspace. When people come to the library, is there one or two things they find to be their favorite . You would have to ask them. I think they are always curious about the berlin wall. The whole thing is so it is all here. Everything in his life is here. It would be hard for me to say which one they would choose. Right over here is march 30, 1981. Where were you when you heard the president was shot . I was at a luncheon, at an art gallery luncheon. For some reason, this never has happened to me before, and god willing will not happen to me again, i suddenly had the feeling i had to go. I do not know what it was. I had the feeling i had to get back to the white house. And i did. I went up to the solarium. The head of my detail there was a ramp up to the solarium and he came to me and he beckoned to me to come down. He said there has been a shooting. By that time, i am on my way to the elevator. We went down, he has not been hurt. We got downstairs. I am going to the hospital and he said, it is not necessary. He has not been hurt. I said, george, either get the car or im going to walk. We got to the hospital. There were police all around and a lot of noise and they put me in a small room. There was one desk and one chair. They kept saying, he is all right, but you cannot see him. If he is all right, why cant i see him . Finally, they let me see him. He was lying there with a thing on his face to help him breathe. He said, honey, i forgot to duck. Did you talk about the danger that you face . We never thought about it. You do not think about that. Maybe your husband might get sick, but you never think he will be shot. Ever. You have the actual xray. What was the decision . The bullet ended up an inch or two from his heart. They could not find it. They would think they had it and it would slip away from them. By that time, they moved me up to a room of the above. They kept telling me what was happening and the progress. We cannot seem to get it we might have to leave it in there. Finally, this wonderful doctor who had been up all night found it and got it out. We almost lost him. We were at the ranch yesterday. One of the things that hit me comment talking to the secret service, any time you are at a little house, there were 54 secret service members. It seems to me you would feel very funny. You were not aware of it at all. The house did not seem so little to us. It seemed wonderful to us. We did not want a great big house. We wanted to vacation, ronnie always liked to be outdoors. We made a lot of changes in the house. We replaced the porch. It was heaven for us. It can be very cold in that house and hot. How did you deal with it . I love it. I miss it. I cannot go there without ronnie. I do not know why it was taken. When did you first notice the president was having a memory problem . I forget, you forget. Dont you . He might not be able to remember the egg is from king five. It is a beautiful egg. What did you think of the practice of giving gifts between heads of state . It was very nice but for us, it was embarrassing. Ecause you were limited i think it was 100. Thingsve us beautiful and he felt a little selfconscious. Quite did you get involved in giving the gifts yourself . Yes. I dont remember. I just remember it was hard. What is this big photograph . Mrs. Reagan it was an arrival ceremony. There i was. Yes, it was fun. Do your own briefing to get up to speed on who they were . Well, somebody. The maner, normally, would go with ronnie to the oval office and women would go with me upstairs and have some coffee and sit and talk. And wonderful. Mrs. Reagan yes, i do. Yes, i do. I did it because it was the first time there had been a meeting between us. There,n when we got over and the meeting started, the press could not get into the meeting, could not talk to my husband, and so they on the more than i thought was necessary. It was not really final what i had on or what she had on. Important decisions to make there. Back on theseok momentsat are positive you remember . What kinds of days are the most fun for you . When you are in the white house, there are so many highs and lows. The lowest day was when ronnie was shot. That is an easy one. But it is hard to pick a day. You get tired . Mrs. Reagan sure. I was doing the just say no program. You get tired. Diaries and imy thought, how did i ever do all of this . I do not know how i did all that. Did you write a diary every day . Mrs. Reagan nighttime. Sometimes, we would be so tired that we would put it off until the next morning and rely on our memory. Will that be public someday . Did you write it as if the whole thing would be public . When you write it, i am not thinking about it being public. Available for anyone to look at. We go from the gift area appeared any other gifts you want to mention . Mrs. Reagan cincinnati, wonderful set. They are all you have more stored somewhere else . Mrs. Reagan 100,000. Can you imagine . You want everybody to see them all. Beautiful. When someone gives you a gift, is it yours or the peoples gift . Mrs. Reagan unless you want to buy it. There were a couple of things we bought. A cigarette box the queen and when wehilip gave us celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary with them. On the top it says to mrs. Reagan, on their anniversary, from Queen Elizabeth and prince , theips, it gives a date whole thing to you think, what would that mean to anyone but us . I do not remember. I dont. We will go from peace to war. You have got a big missile here. I walk over this way. What is this doing here . Mrs. Reagan this is the missile ronnie was so proud of. That he got rid of. When you are in the white house, did you all talk much about the military side of things . Mrs. Reagan he did. I was aware of it, certainly. When he signed the treaty, i was very proud of him and he was very proud of it. We will go next to the first lady. This is your area. The first lady area. Mrs. Reagan these had heart problems and they could not operate on them in korea. I put them on the plane and brought them here. On and theyerating recovered. There was a problem about, should they go back to korea or should they not . Families wanted them to stay here because they could not support them. And and iany children have the money to support them. They are very happy. Collect how old are they now . How old are they now . At least 16. Mrs. Reagan i saw them after the operation. They created quite a stir on the plane coming back here. Adopted by american citizens . Mrs. Reagan i imagine so. Thisen you put together area, what was your mission . Mrs. Reagan to show what my life was like. This was a big turning point for me. Who have never been at a gridiron dinner, what is it . Mrs. Reagan held yearly in washington. A very select group of journalists and important people in washington. The image that had been created i do not know whether it was helen thomas or sharon that suggested i do this. They wanted me to make fun of the press and i said no, i will not make fun of the press. I will make fun of myself. Which i did. Ronnie did not know i would do this. He thought it was going to the restroom or something. I came out on the stage. He was so surprised. I was so nervous i thought i would die. It all came off well. I saying. When you look back, what is your attitude about the press . They got to i think know me better. It is a learning process that goes on. Are they too rough on people . Mrs. Reagan i do not pretend to know about today. This is part of your life over here . I saved everything. Everybody teased me about that. When it came time for the library, then. That is my wedding suit. Where they your best friend back then . Mrs. Reagan yes. When did he die . Mrs. Reagan oh gosh. A long time ago. Alone, agan he died which is too bad. He fell and hit his head. Nobody found him until the next day. Her parents are here. Right there. Mrs. Reagan my wonderful mother and father. They seemed to be completely opposites. I guess they were. They broke the mold after they made my mother. Greatest sensehe of humor. My mother knew everybody in chicago. She knew the taxi drivers, the doorman, and on up. Stories. To tell my father was the first neurosurgeon in chicago. He was the complete opposite. Each was what the other needed. How did they get along with the president . Mrs. Reagan they were in love with him. I introduced them on the phone. Pretty soon, the phone conversations became more ronnie and my mother then me and my mother or father. They were telling stories. You have got pitchers on the walls here of your kids. Two right here, michael. Yes. Reagan this picture at the ranch. Think of all of the press, all of the analysis of your family and your relationships . Have they been hard to deal with . They will write what they will want to write. Did you read it . Mrs. Reagan not all the time. With my mother and father, i had a wonderful relationship that im very grateful i had. Something we were talking about yesterday, the canoe. What is the story of the canoe . Mrs. Reagan you will laugh when i tell you the spirit in todays world, it is so corny. You. Cornyays world, it is so. I always thought if someone wanted you to marry them, they took you up in a canoe and and you ukulele to you sat there and drag your hand in the water. That is pretty silly. But that is what i thought. For our 25th wedding anniversary, i was down by the lake and i see ronnie walking with his canoe that he had written in ridden in. And a wonderful man who is no longer with us. Ronnie took me out in the canoe and said, i have not got a ukulele, but i can hum. A picture of you sitting on the dock. That dr. he built dock. What did you do up there . Mrs. Reagan a lot of things. I just loved being there. I loved it. Right in front of you, behind our camera, october, 1986 schedule of the white house. What is the reason for putting that there. . Mrs. Reagan to show how full the day was. Did you have a schedule to look at . [laughter] and how would you have it directed in that process . When he see that schedule mrs. Reagan mrs. Reagan a lot of things i went to with him. Quite what is this . What is this . Mrs. Reagan that is when i fell off the bench. Did you hurt yourself . Mrs. Reagan no. It was his doing i did not. He insisted that along the stage, there be a rough and some plants. The poor man who had set these on stage for us to sit. And sat onscussion one. Nd one end and the poor man who set up the chairs set this one chair close to the very edge of the stage. All i did was to turn mike this to close my legs and i fell over. If it was not for him, i would have hurt myself. And ronnie, everybody rushed said, i told you not to do that unless there was a problem. Said, i just thought we would live things up a little bit. What is the best training for a first lady . Mrs. Reagan i do not know that there is any. Even being first lady california for years, at the white house, it is different. A look at something not easy to talk about, the alzheimers letter. Taken . That picture mrs. Reagan i dont know. I do not know why it was taken. When did you first notice the president was having a memory problem . I forget, you forget. Dont you . He might not be able to remember somebodys name, but i cannot remember peoples names. I did not notice anything. We went for a checkup in august of that year that he was diagnosed. This letter was written. Is that the actual letter . November 5, 1994. How did you decide to do that . Mrs. Reagan we had always gone public. I had cancer, he had operations. Thinking it would help people. We both went public with it. In each case, it did. He felt a very strongly about it. People were very embarrassed and selfconscious about alzheimers. They did not know that it was a disease, like any other disease. There was an embarrassment about it. And there should not have been. Now it is amazing how many people come up and say to me their mother or father, someone in their family has alzheimers. Now they feel free to talk about it. He did a great thing. What have you learned . It is probably the worst disease you can never have. You lose contact and you are not able to share all those wonderful memories. We had a wonderful life. Can you have a conversation . Mrs. Reagan not now. The letter itself, what were the circumstances in which he wrote the letter . Mrs. Reagan we were in a library, sitting at the table. He sat down and read it. Wrote it. That was it. First draft. He crossed out one word. Or two. I do not know what that was. Only ronnie could write a letter like that. The way he expressed himself. I do not know of anybody else. One of the stories that came out of all of this was george shultz. November 7, 1994. He was visiting the president and he did not recognize him. After, in the last five years some time. Mrs. Reagan he had not seen george in a long time. The letter is a very sweet letter. How devastated he was to hear. It is a very nice letter. As you go through this disease and you begin to lose contact, how have you dealt with when people come to visit . Mrs. Reagan we do not have visitors. When it did happen . Mrs. Reagan we never let that happen. The other thing we learned about is you have been the care giver. What do you tell people who are watching you as an example . How do you do it from day to day . They say it is tougher on the care giver. Mrs. Reagan it is. It is tougher. He would do the same thing for me. I know that. I am not the only person. Many people out there are who are caregivers. It is very difficult to watch somebody you love. What kind of shape is the president in now . Mrs. Reagan john was referring more to another year. He does not swim anymore. John did come to see him last august, i think. He was going to the baseball game. I think ronnie recognized him, but he does not do the other things john was talking about. The assassination attempt and the cancer. What have you learned about dealing with illness . Mrs. Reagan you just do it. You take each day as it comes and you put 1 foot in front of the other, i do not know. And you love. Next stop on our trip is the oval office. Before we go there, why did you build an oval office . Mrs. Reagan he wanted to have the oval office the exact size of his office. Everything that was in his office, he wanted it in that office. They have done it. What do you think the traction is in this country to the oval office . Mrs. Reagan people see it, you know, they can get to washington and if they are lucky they can , get on a tour. This is the exact replica, everything that he had. The pictures. The history of the western saddles, everything is exactly as it was. The rug that we had in the oval office, everything is the same. Exact rug. This desk . Anything special . Mrs. Reagan it was the desk that john f. Kennedy had. Is this the desk . Mrs. Reagan no, this is a copy. How many times did you come to oval office . Mrs. Reagan only when i was asked. [laughter] i did not sit in on meetings. Did you sit in the oval office very often talk . No, never. That was his business. When he was through in the oval office, he would come home. What time of day . It is like asking me about the highs and lows. Every day it was a little different. Probably around 6 00. When he was president , we used to do programs with him and students. He used to do it when he was governor and then one time, he came back and called. Did you ever see that . I wonder how often it seems like he was saying, im going to call that callin show. Whether they want me to or not. Did you watch much Information Television . Of course. When we had an evening free, we would sit on trays and a library and watch television. Did you follow the news . Yes. What does it do to you when you see yourself on television . [laughter] it depends on how they showed us. Is it a good idea to watch yourself . Mrs. Reagan i thought so. Ronnie is curious about something is covered. Sometimes they say it is better not to get mad. Mrs. Reagan i know, but. In this office and on the desk is a tiny plaque that we hear a lot about. Mrs. Reagan which he believes strongly. There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he does not mind who gets the credit. How long have you known him to use that thing . Mrs. Reagan that was in sacramento. He firmly believes that. It did not matter to him. Ever. Who took the credit. Did you feel the same . Mrs. Reagan i did not have as many. Looking back on the drug program, did it work . Mrs. Reagan i thought so. Yes, it did. Im sorry it did not continue. It was a good program. Just say no, the expression, im sure a lot of people think that was handed to me by an agency or something. It happened by accident. I was that a school in oakland talking to sixth graders in one little progress is to hand and said, mrs. Reagan, what do i do if somebody offers you drugs . I said, just say no. It became a rallying point. Obviously, that was not the answer, but it got the attention. Even today, the expression is used. One of the things that a library like this does is provide history. How do you think president reagan is doing in history . Mrs. Reagan i think he is doing very well. A lot of people are taking another look at him. Theyre seeing things they did not see before, perhaps. I think he is doing very well. What do you think of the book, dutch . Mrs. Reagan i am disappointed. I will not get into that. Looking back on that experience, would you advise anybody in the future to have somebody come into the middle of a demonstration like that as a of an Administration Like that as a biographer . Mrs. Reagan i am sure it can be useful. It depends. What is there to be written from what you know is available . Mrs. Reagan a lot of books are being written about ronnie. Everybody held that until this book came out. A lot in the process of being written. Ronnies book, which is a very good book, is being reissued. I know two or three other people who are writing about him. What do you want your own history to say . Mrs. Reagan i would like them to talk about the drug program. I think that was probably my finest hour. The fact that i tried to make the white house more livable and attractive. If you take for granted that you spend a lot of your life protecting your husband from others, you agree that that is something you do a lot of, how hard is that to do . How did you do it . I think i had little antennas that went up and told me somebody had their own agenda. I would tell him. He did not always agree with me, but i would tell him. What was the first thing you would notice if somebody had their own agenda . You just know. You just know. You have those antennas. Thank you. You are welcome. We will get some of your thoughts and reactions to the passing of former first Lady Nancy Reagan. Mrs. Reagan will be buried at the Ronald Reagan president ial library in california. That will be next to the former president. In Ronald Reagan drawing june 2004 Ronald Reagan died in june of 2004. After that, the first lady series featuring the life and legacy of nancy reagan. We will take you back now live to gloves, ohio. There. S like some action the rally about to get underway. [applause] [applause] good afternoon, after School Allstars save my life. A singleparent home, and watched my older brother struggle with getting activity after school hours. After my brother was shot, and you needed to choose a different path. Allstars was that path and it changed my life. My first year of college, and im very grateful for the organization that was founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger. [applause] it is my honor to introduce to you governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. [applause] gov. Schwarzenegger thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you very much for the wonderful introduction. I am so proud of you. You chose the right path. [applause] our kids only way that can choose the right path, to give them the opportunity. Started after School Programs nationwide more than 20 years ago, and i feel very passionate about that because he gives kids a chance to have adult supervision after school gets out. More than 70 of the kids come from homes where both of the parents are working, so there is no one there to tutor them to take them to storms and train them and help them with their homework. This is why afterSchool Programs are so important. You are in college from your studying business, and youre going to be a genius. We love you. Lets give him a big hand. [applause] gov. Schwarzenegger i love ohio. [applause] i love ohio. It is such a wonderful statement i remember in 1970, my love affair began here. But before that, i want to say briefly, and recognize that passing of nancy reagan today. She was one of the greatest first ladies, an extraordinary human being. Such a wonderful partner to her husband, the president , reagan, who was without doubt one of the greatest president s of the history of the United States. [applause] join him inhe would heaven, and this love affair with start all over again. Lets please have a moment of silence for nancy. Thank you. Let me talk to you about my love affair with ohio. Jim, right of your, come over here, it is very important that you see the person that is really responsible for my love affair. Give him a big hand. [applause] he ran the World Championships in weightlifting and bodybuilding in 1970, and i won that competition. And i told him that competition was so well run, that i would come back after i retired from bodybuilding, and he would be my partner, and we would be running the world temperatures and gloves, ohio. That is exactly what happened. From 1976, 44 decades we have been running every year the World Championships and bodybuilding right here in columbus, ohio. [applause] i just came from there, because this weekend was the fitness festival. It has grown to the biggest event in the world. 200,000 people are going through there and watching those events. We have 56 different sports, and we almost 20,000 athletes participating. The olympics have 12,000 athletes, and we have almost 20,000 athletes participating. This is the highest success when sports, to fitness, and the promotion of health and fitness. This is what it is all about. The only way to connect on it is because of the great work and dedication, the passion of the people of ohio, and specifically of columbus. A big hand to all the people that work so hard to make this happen. [applause] now one day, my friend said to me you are coming for the classic, and for sports and fitness festival, i want you to meet a guy by the name of john cusick was running for congress. The 1980s. K in i said i am coming. I came to the event, i listened to john kasich. And it was extraordinary, what he said. I wasom that point on, campaigning for him, and i was in fundraisers for him, and let me tell you something when he went to washington, he kicked some serious thought. [laughter] o when in action her he went to washington. [applause] as the chairman of the house budget committee, he pushed through the first balanced budget. The first balance budget since man walked on the moon. And about that. [applause] so he showed real action. Then when he ran for governor, i said to him, i will be back. [laughter] and he ran, and i was there again, and his fundraisers, and his offense committed everything. And then he became governor of the great state of ohio. And once again he was the action hero. Went in there, there was an 8 billion budget deficit. Now there is a 2 million surplus. [applause] and not only that, you did this without raising taxes. He did the opposite. Billion. D taxes by 5 think about that. By 5 billion he reduced the taxes. [applause] createdhe same time, he more than 300,000 jobs. We always talk about those numbers, 300,012 percentage is that all of those things. It does not mean that much, but each person goes home, and says i can provide for my family. I have a job. I am somebody. It makes you feel good when you have a job, when you feel wanted, needed, that it is what it means for each person, each of those 300,000. You have done such an extraordinary job, and in so much when those people go to work. This is the kind of action hero he is. If he willlike that be in washington, because right now we need leadership like that. There are some that were pennies to be done. [applause] there is so much work that needs to be done. Immigrant, i am an came here in 1968 with absolutely nothing, but i was full of dreams. And because this is the land of america,ty, because of i could make all of my dreams become a reality. Through hard work and dedication , i was successful in bodybuilding, in show business, i became governor of the state of california, i made a lot of money, all because of america. This is the land of opportunity, it is the greatest nation in the world, no matter what anyone says out there. [applause] and we need john kasich to now take charge and be at the white house. This is why i endorse john kasich, our great governor. [cheers] ,o be our republican nominee and to be the next president of the United States of america, the greatest country in the world. Ladies and gentlemen welcome a very good friend, Governor John Kasich. [applause] governor kasich thank you. Thank you everybody. Begin,et me just say to that is the case express. It just keeps rolling. They just keep rolling along. I want to say word about nancy reagan, because today my wife is going with me for a couple of days on the trail. I am thrilled that she is going to be with me. My staff is thrilled because they say she keeps me in line. I have a sense that was a little bit that way with nancy reagan and her husband, and she looked out for him every step of the way. And she made sure that the people who were [laughter] governor kasich she didnt do that. [laughter] she made sure the people who were around him, were committed to what he believed in. She was an incredible lady. She was very strong, and a total class act. I have to tell you, she is now with her ronnie and with the lord, and it is great. God bless them, and God Bless America for what Ronald Reagan as nancy reagan did for this country. [applause] and nancy reagan did for this country. I do not know how much you really know about arnold. As thew about him terminator camino home as the big after terminator, you big action ia hero. His bodybuilding competition is an al on all continents now. Ma all great business this youngtn, but man who was here, i dont know if you heard what he was saying. He knew he needed to change his life, because he knew she did not change his life, he would probably lose his life. It was a number of years ago when arnold created the afterSchool Allstars. This is a program that takes kids who could very easily join a gang, find themselves in drugs , totally isolated from everyone , without being able to realize their godgiven potential. This afterSchool Allstars is an incredible program, and it is growing. I went to california back was when i was in television, and i went to where arnold was going to be a great and i said have you ever seen arnold here . They said he is here all the time. He is here with the kids, he gives 100 of himself. Because of his commitment afterSchool Allstars, and what they have done for children who need to find their way, we are now running one of the biggest afterschool allstar programs in any state outside of the state. F california it has been his leadership that inspired me to make sure that this program is funded, and has strong support. [applause] arnold came, he and i have been friends for a long time. He came here in 2010. Governor california, he flew all the way in, did a fundraiser, flew all the way back, had a terrible schedule, and said i want to help you. But when he came and after that long flight, i was whining to him about the negative campaigning that was going on in ohio. I said this is really not fair, this is not fun. He looked at me and some of the best advice i have ever received. He said john, love the beatings. Love them. [laughter] and i have been loving them ever sense. This is like moguls. Eat of the moguls. Then when i won, he gave me this jacket. I dont know if you can see it, anm theficially governor two. [laughter] when i talk about the kasich expressed that just keeps chugging along. Back in 1977, when i was running, we had a newsletter called the kasich express. And it just keeps chugging along. Race with myis team, because you do not do anything without a team. Because the country really needs help. The country really needs leadership. I think the reason why arnold and i are friends is because we both admire great leadership. We talked about Ronald Reagan. Ronald reagan enable people to play at a much higher level than they would normally play. When we think about great leaders like winston churchill, those people over there, every nice they were bombed, every night they had role in the street, and he went on to say we we would never give in. These kinds of leaders allow us to reform and accomplish real things in our lifetime. When i think about Ronald Reagan i think about the resurgence of america. When we allht watched that berlin wall, and people who jumped on that wall with their little hammers, and im not sure what they were pounding, maybe they were pounding out their hopes, and their dreams, and their spite at those security guards that try to deny them their godgiven potential. But leadership can bring about great things. Do we have challenges and problems today . Oh yes, we do. People who areof worried that their jobs one day will not be there anymore. Thats some crazy trade deal hit them upthan the backside of their head, and someone will walk out oalk in ad say you are out of work. Put their money in anything, expecting to get interest in and over the last number of years, they got zero. They watched a lot of people who had well be able to buy into the stock market and do well when they were stuck. Dad whot the mom and for their and dreams daughters, but they are living in the basement after ringing up a huge college debt and have no prospects for the future. Believeoung people who they will see a ufo before a Social Security check. And those who wonder can we be safe and america . Are we a leader of the world anymore . I grew up in that town. Wrongin the wind blew the way, people were out of work. Many of you have been with me for many years. I have never lost in my minds , i have never lost the sense that people sometime feel powerless, but they have no one to represent them, that feels that nobody stands out for them. That is what i have been dedicated to. Creating economic security, opportunity, giving you a voice. People feel that no one is listening. I know that i can go to washington and pull this together. I know that i can go to washington [applause] look, i know how to balance budgets. I know how to build a team of people that are willing to give us on a strong fiscal track. Why do we want that . Because our job creators do not feel like they can trust the future and sit on their wallets. We will not get the jobs we want. I know how to deal with regulation where we have lost common sense. , i have nothis problem with people who work in the government. Want to makef they all the laws, they should run for public office, not just sit behind a desk where they dont deal with the reality of how we create jobs in this country. [applause] and we know how to cut taxes. We cut taxes more than any governor in america by 5 billion. The office. That first year that i was in, you all had a get a seat held yourse you fall out of chair with everything that was happening. We have reduced taxes, and we killed the death tax. A Small Business person could pass it on to their kids of basic vessel. Now were working on killing death. We have not done well enough, but we are working at it. Jobs, a balanced budget, same thing in washington. I take orders from you. I will take orders from the people who are the connected, vested interest. And my wife, she knows it, and she has become a wonderful partner. The only one i take orders from his her. But she understands the stakes are. Let me say a couple more things. I want to shift a lot of power back to where we live. I want us to have the programs to run our schools, our school boards, not some faraway place in washington. [applause] i want to sound\ send welfare back here, so it is not a way of life, but a way of getting out of the ditch. [applause] to send the programs of health care for the poor, because we know we can do a better job, if we were set free. And send back job training, and send back transportation. So im going to send these programs all within the first 100 days. But i want to tell you something that i really believe, coming from that little town in pittsburgh. Little town, our hero was Roberto Clemente. He was the great athlete. He performed like we all dreamt that we could. I do not see my mother cry a lot , but i remember the morning she walked in my room in tears because she said Roberto Clemente had lost his life, flying to help people in nicaragua who had been hit by an earthquake. , wesee in that little town did not wait for any president to come galloping into our town. Not wait for some politician to come in and solve our problems. The spirit of america, in my opinion, does not rest in politicians. We need to do our job to get things fixed where we are expected to do our job, what we are paid for. But the spirit of our country rest in you. It is rest in a fourway city or does not place it rest in a faraway city for a faraway place. [applause] mississippi, Hurricane Katrina came in and level the entire town, and nothing left. Bankple of safes from the were left. They put all the cash in a winnebago, and the sound card tables, and people got cash they needed to survive. They rode out ious, and when all , and theynd done lost about 300. Up toegulators showed look at the winnebago bank, they were told to get back in their cars and get out of here, because we know what we are doing. People across the country, standing up, fixing things. The last thing i want to tell allis this do you understand that you are made special . Do you know that the lord has never made anybody like you, and will never make any money like you again . Anybody like you again . You have purpose. Part of your purpose was to be here today. Did you ever think you would be doing Something Like that in front of governor schwarzenegger and all these people . But you are reaching out. And will have to discover our godgiven purpose. I believe that when we work together, we are a great, beautiful mosaic. And we do not discover our purpose, the mosaic is incomplete. I think when we work together, we need to live a life bigger than ourselves to help heal this world. Let me give you a couple of examples. , you are done at 10 00 p. M. Tonight, you are dead tired. But you walk into the room or that family is sitting on the edge of their chairs, worried about their loved ones. You take a few more minutes to say, it is going to be ok. Or if you are a teacher, and you gave up the salaries because you believe that you are changing the lives of young people, you found your purpose. And you are a physician, and you at 11 30 p. M. Nt at night because you cannot sleep, you are living your purpose. And sometimes it is not even that complicated. How about the widow who was married for 52 years, and no one calls her anymore . And you call her on monday and say, myself and i are going to take you out to dinner on saturday. On thursday she goes and gets her hair done. And on saturday when you pick her up, she puts on the dress that she had not worn in six months. Did you change the world . I think you did. You see, i will take care of these things in washington. If i need help, i will call you. I will call you. Back here, we need to pull our communities together. We need to destroy the curse of drugs. We need to rebuild our schools, we need to fight poverty, and we need to connect with one another, because that is the spirit of america. That is where america lives in our neighborhoods, in our families, and our communities. [applause] so were coming up to an election. They will have an election in michigan on tuesday. We let them when yesterday in basketball. We are going to do well. We are going to do well. And then were coming here. We are coming here. [applause] i think it is important that in ohio, we not only send the message to the country, but we send the message to the world that positive efforts in politics and not namecalling, slimy, or make suggestions about how you are going to fix things set a positive message in raising the bar for our kids will win. We will move america forward. Thank you all very much, and god bless you all. Thank you. Yetg somewhat liberal and conservative, kind of funny you said arnold of their, a lot of us feel nancy was not the warmest person out there. I was a president reagans library, there is no mention of j wyman. She was focusing on what she wanted to have there. But also being revealed on the opposite side of the coin, she was promoting president reagan to be more involved with the aids situation, the early stages of those days, as well as the ,dea of Stem Cell Research which makes her a fascinating woman nonetheless to appreciate those attitudes. As they said it was a great love story. When youixed emotions deal with a personality like that. She was dynamic. Our hats off to her. Host misalignment passing away in 2007. Pascoe in 2007. Just go to cspan. Org. Coming up now we will show you something from 2014, our first lady series where we took a look at the life and legacy of nancy reagan. My hope is that the women of the future will feel truly free to follow whatever path their talented nature takes them to. I think they thought that the white house was so glamorous, and that what you did was so glamorous, and your life was so glamorous. All they saw were the parties and the greeting people. I have got to tell you, i have never worked harder in my life. Nancy reagan was Ronald Reagans fiercest protector. And involved first lady, she was active in key staff decisions and in campaigning. She had a signature white house issue with her just say no campaign. Welcome to first ladies influence and image. Tonight we are going to tell you the story of anne francis robbins. Let me introduce our two guests. Judith woodruff is the coanchor of cbs news hour. She coproduced a documentary about the first lady. Thank you for being with us. He is the Washington Bureau chief. He is a californian who has been covering National Politics since 1984 and cowrote a book with his father, a reagan biography. Lou, nice to see you. We looked at hundreds of hours of video about the reagan presidency in the cspan library. We decided to start with the closing chapter. This is footage from the funeral when mrs. Reagan says goodbye. We thought that it symbolized the partnership they both covered so much. Lets watch. Then we will talk a little bit more about the relationship. Hard to believe it was nearly 10 years ago. As you look at that, as we have worked our way through the series, especially in the 20th century, many of the first ladies were Political Partners with her husbands. Was this a particularly special partnership between the two of them . It was from the very beginning, from the sacramento days, from the hollywood days. But the partnership we see as nancy pats the coffin, it is heartbreaking. You imagine her patting his shoulder every night for 10 years. Every night it was like losing him again. I think nancy got a rough start in this town, and she got a rough start in sacramento. She won everyone over in the 10 years that he had alzheimers, she took care of him. Maybe they werent her words, the people around them called it the longest goodbye. It was 1994 when Ronald Reagan wrote that letter announcing to the world that he had alzheimers. It was not nearly as familiar to us as it is today. He would live another 10 years out of public view, but she was with him. They were in their home in belair, in los angeles. And the closeness was with them right up until the end, and you see that in the video. The christening of the boat was in 2001, my father and i were both there. It was a cold, blustery day in april. And she said, i have to get back. He is agitated when i am not in the house. She really was his caretaker. Lets talk a little bit about what the partnership meant in terms of National Politics. What made this a successful quest for the white house . We have talked a long time about that. It was a remarkable partnership. It was a strong marriage. They loved each other deeply. It was very much a working partnership. Once it was clear that Ronald Reagan was interested in politics, and it started when he was the spokesman for ge, traveling around the country. He was hired by ge around 1955, somewhere in there, and from that moment on, and when the friends they made decided that Ronald Reagan would be a great candidate for governor, and went on to be elected governor, that she was the person people i talked to call her the personnel director. She made sure that the people around her husband had his best interest at heart. We are going to show a brief clip from role of a lifetime the cbs documentary, and she talks about what she brings to the relationship in terms of looking out for him. The first lady is another means to keep the president from being isolated. I talk to people. They tell me things. And if something is going to be a problem, i am not above calling a staff person. I make no apologies for looking out for his personal and political welfare. Your thoughts on the partnership . She said she was the personnel director. In september of 1980, when they started to hit a rocky road, and the campaign was in a little bit of trouble, it was nancy who said where stu spencer . He was only back in the campaign because nancy had helped bring about. There was one person he asked, is it ok . And that was nancy. Nancy said it was her idea. We will have more time to talk about the white house years. We are going to go back and talk about the nancy reagan biography. Before that we will talk about how you can be involved. Your questions make it so much more interesting for us so we can take the conversation in the direction of your interest. You can see us on facebook and find cspans page. There is already a discussion going. You can also tweet is at first ladies. You can also use the good old phone. We will get the calls and probably about 10 minutes or so. Lets go back to where she was born, in 1981. Her early days were not easy. It was not the smoothest childhood. Her mother was an actress. Her father was a salesman. The marriage between edith and kenneth did not last long. Nancy was around two years old when they divorced. Her mother really wanted her acting career, and she wanted a safe place for nancy. So she had nancy, until she was remarried, with nancys aunt outside of washington. Nancy lived in what was then a suburban neighborhood. The woman who was described as very different from her mother. Her mother was very outgoing, was the life of the party, was in the middle of every conversation. Her aunt was much more quiet. The rules were fairly strict. Nancy herself talk about it. She talked in the interview in the documentary about how she missed her mother, and she would be thrilled with her mother came to visit. So it was rocky for a few years. What changed for nancy when her mother remarried to a chicago physician . There was money. He was successful. She went to Smith College. He was the doting parent she had lacked. For most of her life, that is the man she called her father. They gave her an idea of what a family could be. From that day forward, she had an idea of what she would like to be, and what she wanted out of life. And she wanted to build a family that was the family she didnt have. That was something that she and reagan had in common. She went to hollywood. She went to the theater, and then she went back to hollywood. She was typecast. She was cast as the steady woman. That is what she was. Did nancy reagan and barbara bush know each other as students at Smith College . I would have to ask. Do you know . I think nancy was leaving as barbara bush was coming in. She was only there a year or two, so i dont think so. That is a good question. We know that nancy went to new york to try acting right out of smith. She was in new york for two years before she went to hollywood. She had a contract at mgm studios. A question about her stepfather and the influence on her politics. Dr. Davis was very active in conservative politics. Did that influence her . He was a republican. I think that did influence her. She married Ronald Reagan, and on their first date, reagan was discussing politics. And hes talking about communism. He didnt like communism. She was receptive to his message. How did they meet . It is an interesting story. This is hollywood in the late 1940s when there was the communist scare. It was after the end of world war ii. People were named for being somehow associated with the communist party. Nancy davis, which was her name at the time, showed up on a blacklist. She knew that that was not she. And that was as someone who was in hollywood that was part of the communist party. She wanted to get her name off. She told her good friend, who i believe was a producer, she said how can i get this done . They said Ronald Reagan as the president of the Screen Actors Guild. She said, as soon as i knew that, i knew who Ronald Reagan was. I said, absolutely, call him up. And i would be glad to meet with him. He said he would be glad to talk to her about this. And then one thing led to another. There was a meeting. Then it became dinner. She really tells a funny story about how they both agreed to go to dinner but insisted it had to be an early evening because they had an early call, which neither one of the actually did. If the date doesnt work out, you can ended in a civil way, right . But they didnt ended early because they didnt have anywhere to be the next morning. That was 1941. When did they marry . 1952. So they had a threeyear courtship. You will be seeing some video of people telling the story of nancy and Ronald Reagan. This is about their early relationship and the love letters they shared. Nancy was asked if it was love at first sight. She said, it might not have been, but it was pretty darn close. She was a very sentimental woman. She kept mementos of the relationship. All of the artifacts are on display in the museum, and a document how important they were to each other. One of the things that we have in here, which is very symbolic of their intense relationship, is a letter the president reagan wrote to his wife in 1953 when he was in new york, and he wrote a very charming letter to her. He wrote it as if she had actually joined him at dinner. You can see how creative you was. The final page of the letter is very touching. Lets take a look at that page, along with some of the other artifacts in the collection. This is that fourth page of the letter. It is where president reagan expresses his heartfelt feelings to his wife. This was written in 1953, about 1. 5 years after they were married. He says, i suppose some people would find it unusual that you and i can so easily stand 3000 miles. But in truth, it comes very naturally. Man cannot live without a heart, and you are my heart. You are the nicest thing about me and so very necessary. There would be no life without you, nor would i want anybody. Signed, the eastern half of us. Recently, mrs. Reagan given us this little box that held precious keepsakes of hers. When nancy reagan received her own dressing room when she was under contract to mgm, Ronald Reagan went to a jeweler and had a special key made for her. It had an image of a thespian on the front and on the back. She thought that was such a nice idea that two years later, after they were married and they bought their first home, she had keys made for their first home. And there is little house on the top. And theyre both engraved with their initials. On his key, right above his initials it says, our first. What were the early married years like . They were married in 1952, and their daughter was born in 1952. Shed been getting some roles fairly steadily. And his career was the one that was stalling out at that point. Then the ge offer came along. She became a homemaker. She did a few Television Roles in the first decade of the marriage. She was his wife, and the mother of patty, and i think years later ron junior was born. Her family was her life, and she devoted all of her time to that. There is great story that once he went to work for ge, ge had an all electric house built for them, which had every imaginable special feature in it. Drape closures. The kind of things that we wouldnt think was a big deal today. But it was a big deal then. She became much closer to the wives who were influential. And Ronald Reagan brought two children to the marriage, maureen and michael reagan. By the time they came onto the national stage, first as governor of california, and then, of course, in the white house years, there were tensions between the kids. One of our viewers refers to this. They ask, what is the relationship between the kids and stepson now . We have a documentary that talks about the reagan partnership and the effect on children. Lets listen to ron reagan talk about life inside the Ronald Reagan household from his perspective. We were conscious, i think, growing up. I was. There were really two sets of people, to definite and distinct sets of people involved in the family. There was my mother and father, and there was everybody else. And while we were all part of the family, when push came to shove, there was a distinction to be made. It wasnt like, be seen and not heard, but it was you know, we were expected to put ourselves in second place to whatever they were doing. What can you add to this part of the story . Ron reagan junior, the family calls him skipper, and he tells the story about emotional distance. Theres a kind who looks out the window and sees a kid playing football, and has to go and join the game, and theres the kind that goes back to his work. As he went on he said his dad was the kind who came out and played with the kids. You find yourself wondering, what was there beef . You keep hearing about this emotional distance that reagan had with his children. But he played ball with all of them. He was very involved. In his own mind he was a family man first. He separated hollywood people into those who had multiple marriages and family people. Jim eyman left him, so he didnt want to be divorced. Michael writes about it years later when michael admits he was abused by camp counselor. He said the guy felt his pain, and reagans eyes kind of glazed over. There was this emotional distance that was subtle that everybody talks about. Sometimes people would blame nancy. But nancy, she once told my dad, after they left the white house, you can get so far with ronnie, and then something happens. It took him a long time to trust me. On twitter there is this question, todays hollywood is decidedly liberal. Was ronald and nancys conservatism unusual in 1950s hollywood . I do not know that i am the right person to ask. There were other conservative women in the community. But those that supported Ronald Reagan and in his candidacy, were people not in the movie industry per se. There was Jimmy Stewart and people like that. I would not say that the conservatives were necessarily in the extreme minority, but they probably were not the majority. Most of the people in hollywood were democrats. There is an interesting story about that. When reagan runs against pat brown, a popular twoterm governor, pat thought it would be wise to run. He would say, he is an actor, the way he would say, hes an idiot. People would say, why is this a Winning Strategy . But the people were from northern california. But in Southern California people were proud of the movie industry. People were criticizing him for being an actor, and jack palance was there. They said, you can criticize this guy, but dont make fun of them because he is an actor. They said, he is one of us. And they were proud of him. We will take phone calls and then learn more about the Governors Mansion in california. Phil is watching in northern hollywood, ca. You are our first caller tonight. I was at the Reagan Library, and i recommend it to everybody, whether you agree with their politics or not. I was struck by the omission. I was wondering what the dynamic was between the reagans and jane. I thought it was odd that there was one little line. It said, oh, yes, jane wyman, he was married to. Obviously, mrs. Reagan was in control of the president ial library. I was wondering if you had any insight on that. I really appreciate the program. Thank you so much. I do not think we know very much about that. Jane wyman was his first wife. And they were part of the family after ronald and jane wyman divorced. But there was never any discussion that i heard of jane wyman. Reagan felt hurt by what it happened in a marriage. But jane wyman never gave interviews. I think she was just as well to not be made a spectacle of. She was not part of their political story. She was part of their personal story. Keith is in illinois. Hi, keith. You are on. Thank you for taking my call. I heard somewhere that nancy was really into astrology, and things of that sort. Is it true that she held seances in the white house . That would be mary todd lincoln. Our caller made the same mistake. But nancy did consult an astrologer after Ronald Reagan was shot. She did so because she was desperate for anything, anything she could have. She did not have much to control of the schedule, so she consulted an astrologer. This came out in dons book, and that came out. It was a mild embarrassment. Many people thought that she was so traumatized that if she wanted to consult astrologer she was well within her rights. Jordan is in pennsylvania. Hi, jordan. My grandmother has the same birth day as nancy reagan. She was born july 6, 1920. She was one of my favorite first ladies. Did her mother live to be almost 100 when she was in the white house . I do not remember. Do remember if she was around for the inauguration . 1921 was actually her birth date. Sorry to pop your balloon there. I am looking it up. This helps us with the transition from the ge years, to politics, and ultimately, to the governorship of california. Did nancy personally like politics, or did she learn to like it is she loved ronnie . She did not love politics, and she was not built for politics. It was on the job training, and it wasnt always easy. She didnt like the town, and the town reciprocated. She was asked to move into the Governors Mansion, which was a victorian structure downtown, if i remember. I think it was 16th street. Nancy called it a fire trap. It was the second floor bedroom, and the screen was rusted shut. How does he get out in case of fire . He was supposed to ram a dresser into the window, pop up the screen, and climbed on a rope ladder. He was 8. Nancy decided they were going to live there, and they moved to east sacramento. I have an answer to jordans question. Edith died in 1987, shoes to was alive for most of that time , so she was alive for most of that time in the white house. I wrote a couple bullet points down. She was criticized for not wanting to live in the Governors Mansion. She was critical of Ronald Reagan, governor reagans staff. She was criticized by the press for her glamorous friends and expensive lifestyle. And she had a number of issues, including veterans. Those were many of the same things. Interesting, isnt it . She developed a thick skin during those years. She didnt like the criticism. She is specially didnt like the criticism of her husband, and she talked about that. She knew it was not going to be easy, but she underestimated how much the press and it does everywhere going to be critical of politicians everywhere. She had to develop an even thicker skin. They looked at her choice of causes. And she and the press had a testy relationship. She shopped in beverly hills, and sacramento did not have stores like that. She was used to cool breezes. Sacramento gets hot. And mostly, she hated the sacramento bee. It was a very democratic newspaper. They were relentless in their criticism of reagan. She canceled the subscription. People asked reagan about this. He said, it is ok, i get it in my office. She took care of him in washington. In those years, she was a little bit brittle. There was a very her story that made fun of the gaze, you know we all talked about that. It was an adoring gaze that she gave reagan. They thought it was phony. We learned over the years that it was not phony. It mightve been annoying, but it was genuine. Reagan protected her in this time. She treated the staff like servants. All of these things, i think, in those years, she had the rough edges. Reagan had to smooth them off. She learned how to be a political spouse. She learned that there were great moments when you feel terrific and appreciated. Then there are the really tough moments. It prepared her for the presidency. She also had these causes. There was a lecture series, i guess it was in 1994. I watched it recently. He found her interested in drugs and youth as early as 1967. You mentioned veterans. She helped get reagan interested in pows. The other thing about sacramento that you notice were the crowds that came up in washington. She had to do it a lot because the children and grandchildren of her friends were starting to have these issues, and she saw that when her husband was governor of california. We have answered that question. Lets move to a phone call. This is duncan in ohio. Thank you. Ronald reagan was a member of the bohemian grove. Did nancy reagan express any feelings about that . It was a club. George schultz belonged to it. It is men only. We should say that. They walked in the redwoods naked, and did all kinds of things. There was a call between nancy and schultz, and the papers are being released. I am inferring that she didnt mind. This is a much too long and political story to be told about Ronald Reagans career, mounting his president ial talents one year later. What was nancys role in encouraging Ronald Reagan to seek the challenge against gerald ford . There was a group of influential republican men, and nancy was very Close Friends with their wives. I am simplifying it, to some extent. There was a larger circle of people. It wasnt just this group of men who had their eye on Ronald Reagan. There were people around the country who thought he would be an effective spokesperson of the conservative cause, as the ge spokesman. Ronald reagan gave a much commented on speech. That was the big comingout speech for Ronald Reagan. All of those disparate forces came together while he was still in the governors office. And they jelled more or less, in that youre after, when gerald ford was running for election, and he had, of course, succeeded richard nixon, Ronald Reagan was on the public consciousness as a very appealing conservative challenge to gerald ford. Remember, he had run a in 1968 for president. I have a story about nancy in the earliest president ial conversation. Maureen was writing her dad letters. There were all these letters back and forth. Shes is trying to encourage him to run for governor. It says, you could be governor. He said, if we want to talk about what i could be, i could be president. This was in 1964 or 1965. He hasnt run for anything. So they decided to do this intervention. They were telling him to run for governor first. Nancy was on the side of her stepdaughter. Reagan said Something Like, it is two against one. They are against me. That is how involved nancy was in the earliest conversations. That was unsuccessful. There was a discussion of a candidacy that went nowhere. How did they spend the next years till the campaign . They organize for the serious run. That one popped up spontaneously, but after 1976, when Ronald Reagan showed that he had substantial support in the Republican Party, from then on it was an allout effort to win the nomination in 1982 when the white house. That doesnt meant he would be a shoe in. There were other republicans running. Some people were saying he was too conservative. Some were saying he was a warmonger. I remember people said he had very strong antisovet view. I covered the carter white house, in those years. People said, he is the one who has his finger on the bomb. There was a lot of this rhetoric flying around. This was, by no means, a walkin for him. He had the people. He had the money. They were out in california. And he was the nominee in waiting for four years. The only thing that is remotely like it is like what is going on with Hillary Clinton, to be honest with you. They are not just going to hand it to her, but he had the money. He had the support. The Republican Party was in transition. And it was going to be Ronald Reagans party. Nancy that it was true, and she turn out to be right. Lets fastforward here. Are we going to slowly . It was a landslide against jimmy carter. 48949 for the sitting president. Much of that was colored by the iranian hostage situation. That was coming to a close on Inauguration Day. Would you spend just a minute talking about that unbelievable Inauguration Day, when the country was waiting for the hostages to come home, and it happened right then . It was extraordinary time, and i tell this from the perspective of the carter white house. I covered jimmy carter, and they had a painful final year of presidency. They had been taken into tehran and were being held by iranian extremists. Jimmy carter and his administration did everything they could. We know, among other things, about the commission where the helicopter went down. It was a humiliating episode in the carter presidency. No doubt it was not the only reason jimmy carter lost the election, but it was a factor. What was the mood in the country about the change in leadership . On Inauguration Day reagan came up with a plan, and the plan was, remember the hostages were being released. If they were being released by this was being done deliberately by the iranians to spite jimmy carter. They thought they would be in airspace while reagan was still speaking, and the plan that they agreed on was that reagan would call carter up to the lectern. But that would only be of the hostages were released, and they would announce it together. I asked, what did nancy think of this . She had a good theatrical sense too. And she was all for it. It didnt happen. But it was not carter or reagans fault. John hinckley attempted Ronald Reagans life at the washington hilton. We had an interview with nancy reagan in 1999 at the Reagan Library, and she spoke to us about that day. We got downstairs. I said, im going to the hospital. He said, it is not necessary. He hasnt been hurt. I said, george, you either get the car or im going to walk. We went to the hospital. And mike met me at the hospital and said, he has been shot. And there were police all around. And there was a lot of noise. And they put me a little, small room. There was one desk and one chair. That was it. I kept wanting to see ronnie. And they kept saying, well, he is all right. But you cant see him. And i kept saying, if he is all right, why cant i see them . Finally, they let me in. He had that thing on his face to help him breathe. He lifted it up and said, honey, i forgot to duck. How did this impact a brand new presidency . I was there that Ronald Reagan was shot. I was a part of the press pool that day. It was a time i will never ever forget. She was all ready completely focused on him and his safety, but after this, it was her sole purpose, you could argue. At one point, she said Something Like, when he left to go somewhere, i wasnt able to breathe deeply until he came back. That was in the movie. It was something she said in the documentary to us. It made her much more you have spoken about the astrology, she was looking for any which way she could. She was grilling people around him to make sure that he was always doing whatever was the safest possible thing. It made her even more determined to keep them healthy. Just one comment about that line, honey, i forgot to duck, that nancy said. That was a famous line. It was the line that jack dempsey used after he lost the heavyweight championship. His face was all battered. And he says, honey, i forgot to duck. The line was reported in the newspapers, at the time. It may dempsey the hero he had not been in the publics mind, until that time. He was bigger when he lost because of that. I think the same thing is true of reagan. That line was reported in the press here. Americans really admired reagan for it, because they realized what he was trying to do, which was reassure his wife. Ronald reagan really endeared himself to the american public. Some said it was a difficult debut for the first lady. Her Approval Ratings were 26 . What were some of the reasons why it was a challenging first year . As in california, where she found a governors home, a governors mentioned that she felt was unsafe, she felt that the white house was in disrepair. She felt there were repairs that needed to be done. She said the furnishings were shabby. She wanted a complete renovation and refurbishing. She wanted new drapes and new upholstery. Raised private money to get this done. She said often, i loved entertaining. I thought that was an important part of being a white house. It was a way to connect with people. She said, we didnt even have the right china. She raise the money to buy a set of china. She was also very interested in style and fashion. She was a woman who cared about her appearance. She got a new set of china. And there was a publicity about her clothes, and it was the image of a woman who cared more about things that did not matter. And it did not go over well. That contributed to the public view. What was the difference between Jacqueline Kennedy coming in wearing fashionable, european desiged clothes and nancy reagan doing it, not that long after . That is a fair question. That is a fair question. Nancy thought it would be a fair new start for her, but it was deja vu all over again. They criticized her for going shopping at bloomingdales. Look, jackie was a special case. There is an edgy website. I dont frequent it very often. It is called nerve. Com. It is about sex and younger people stuff. I was on there recently, in preparation for this show, to see they ranked the sexiest first ladys in history. Nancy reagan ranks very high. I was very surprised that this hip, young website up that. Jacqueline kennedy was 1, and they dont even need explain it. They just showed her picture. Jackie did things that no one else could do. Do have a comment on the difference . It was a different time. It was the 1960s. It was camelot. There is a difference in age. There is a difference in appearance. A lot of people were very divisive between john f. Kennedy and richard nixon. That was a time when a lot of americans were excited. It was a different time. It was 20 years later. The country was getting a little cynical. They had gone through watergate. The press corps was not as willing to just follow and accept whatever the president and first lady were doing. A call from michael in pennsylvania. You are on. Thank you. Great show. Was there a position or ideology that they sometimes disagreed upon, or that the staff disagreed upon . Thank you. Were there any issues at the reagans did not see eye to eye on . Not that i know of. But the staff, absolutely. There was open warfare on many issues. The most important issue iran contra. Nancy would push. Nancy at a point of view, and she would push. On the soviet union, she believed strongly in negotiating with mikhail gorbachev. She pushed back against staffers who did not have his agenda at heart. You have to think about this. There were differences. Nancy knew her reagan was. He was there in 1976. Gerald ford called reagan up to the stage. What does he talk about . Nuclear war. Armageddon. She knew that that was what reagan wanted, and she pushed in that direction. She pushed against those who did not know what reagan wanted. I think she was a moderating influence on him. She wanted him to be the best man he could be and that the best legacy. They didnt disagree. Ages issue that has come up. And on aids, there were people in the white house who that reagan should speak out about it early on. Nancy was on the side of the people that wanted reagan to talk about it. It is not true, as you see, he never mentioned it until 1987. He talked about it in 1985 and 1986. But he mentioned in the speech, and nancy did not trust that the white house policy shot would say what he wanted to say. So she sent for orlando pardon. He had been a white house speechwriter, and he came back, and he gets pushed back, and this is how she wants it. Nancy reagan, and that was the end of the conversation. Susan swain so the first lady was having trouble with her image in the press corps. And there were approaches to help change that. One of those came in 1982, with an event in washington dc. An annual prints press dinner called the press iron club. Nancy reagan appeared before the skits and parodies and it was a , game changer. We are going to listen to her talking about that in a 1988 interview with journalist hedrick smith. She will talk about her parody and why she approached the issue of her popularity this way. Nancy reagan secondhand clothes, secondhand clothes they , are all the rage at the spring fashion shows. Even my two new trenchcoats with four crawlers, ronnie bought for . 10 on the dollar. Second hand gowns. Old handmedowns. The china is the only thing that is new. Even though they tell me im no longer queen, did ronnie have to buy me the new sewing machine, secondhand clothes, secondhand clothes . I sure hope he sows. Around thinking, well, all right, we will try. It could not be worse than it already was. Said, originally they thought that i would make fun of the press. And i said, no. No. No. I am not going to do that. The only way we can do this is if i make fun of myself, if i make fun of myself. Then maybe i will have a 5050 chance here. As you well know, that first year was not, nobody was really crazy about me. [laughter] and i dont think i would have been crazy about me, reading what i did about me. The press was rough. Nancy reagan the press was rough. And i really dont know why , because it started before i ever got here. They did not know me. I never did quite figure out why. But anyway i didnt know, until , i read in your book, that they were having meetings about me over the west wing, that i was a liability and everything like that. I guess, maybe i was. I was pretty gun shy. It had been rough. And your inclination is to run and hide in a closet and lock yourself in. You know you tend to pull back. , i do, anyway, when it is that rough. Which is the wrong thing to do. You shouldnt do that, but i do. Seems very selfaware with what was happening there. Her instincts were right on. She had selfdeprecating humor. She made fun of her self. The press ate it up. The city it turned an important , corner for her. Susan swain carl cannon another , thing that nancy reagan did was the same thing she had done in california, which was the antidrug campaign, which became the just say no campaign. How political was this . Carl cannon well first ladies , are supposed to have a signature issue, and this was something she actually cared about and knew about. And this was a phrase that was in the movement, the anti Drug Movement among psychologist, and they are always trying to think of ways to reach new people. Nancy seized on it. She was criticized for being simplistic. Her answer was disarming, and she says if it saves one childs life, it is worth it. Susan swain and the numbers suggested over the eight years in the white house, drug use amongst young people did decline. I do not know if it was a result of this campaign. But she also had other recognition. She was invited to speak before the united nations. She was the first lady to do that. Also because of this effort, she was the first first lady recognized by the president in a state of the Union Address as he was leaving. In 1986, the two of them, this was another first, sat down to talk about the antidrug effort. We are going to watch a clip from that next and say how they used to television to connect to the american public. Lets watch. Nancy reagan to those watching and listening, i have a personal message for you. There is a big, Wonderful World out there for you that belongs to you. It is exciting and stimulating. And rewarding. Dont cheat yourself out of this promise. Our country needs you to be , and it needs you to be clear eyed and clear minded. I recently read one teenagers story. She is now determined to stay clean, but was once strong out strung out on several drugs. What she remembers about her recovery is that after her everything appeared in shades of gray while she was on drugs. After her treatment she was able to see colors again. To my young friends out there, life can be great, but not when you cant see it. So open your eyes to life. See the vivid colors that god gave us as a precious gift to his children to enjoy life to the fullest and to make it count. Say yes to your life. And when it comes to drugs and alcohol, just say no. Carl cannon i think you can see why Ronald Reagan i think you can see why nancy has been such a positive influence on what we are trying to do. The job ahead of us is clear. Nancys personal crusade, like that of so many wonderful individuals, should become our national crusade. Susan swain carl cannon, another interesting theme throughout is how white house is used the media. In this case we had two people , who had acting within their profession, and television was in its ascendancy as a Political Force. How did they use it . Carl cannon think about this people talked about reagan was , an actor, but she was an actor too. She had 12 feature films. The comfortable level of them behind the camera was the envy of every political couple. Even the little things, she is talking about color, and she is wearing a red dress. They understand the lighting, how the message should go to the pictures. They really got it all, it was almost Second Nature to them both. Susan swain i want to move to the second term in the white house. Again, full of so many issues. In brief, the soviet arms treaty, the explosion of the challenger many of us remember that day well and the iran contra affair. And there was the iran iraq war. She overcame the criticism did , she become a positive Political Force in the white house in the second term . Kirby hanson it was different. She was learned by the first year and was very careful in our dealings with the press. Very sparing in the interviews she gave. By carl said, she has her presence about her, her poise. She was able to communicate in a way that was helpful to the white house. And i think for the second term, it was very different from the first term in that way. By then, they both had learned a lot. We know president s second terms can be rough. The problems came and youve just listed several of them. Susan swain lucy is watching us in wisconsin. Question for us . Caller it goes back to the Jacqueline Kennedy, nancy reagan episode. Both of them having the same interest in changing the white house. I sense such a double standard with the press. I have no problem with the press reporting. I have a problem with the press shaping the image they gave. And i cared a lot about the kennedys, i truly did but they , gave them a free pass on many issues. They kind of just ripped nancy reagan apart and i felt that was a bit unfair. I dont know if that will ever change. It doesnt seem to be in my lifetime anyway. I just wanted to know if you could address that. Kirby hanson lucy i do think it , was a different time. We talked about this a few minutes ago, but i do believe andhe 1960s, the country the press corps was just more accepting of politicians, president s. Look at what we now know jack , at least part of the time, was doing in his private life. The press completely did not report on that. Been0 years later, we had the country had been through , watergate, had been through vietnam. Just many more questions about whether our leaders were telling the truth, and i think there was a much greater reluctance to believe our eyes. I dont mean me, but i mean the presss eyes. I think that reflected the way the country felt as well. Susan swain there were some criticisms we talked about, about the sense of style and fashion she brought to the white house and whether that was appropriate for the time. They did use the white house to promote the political agenda as most president s have over the course of history. We are going to show you about how the Reagan Library was like her style. As first lady of california nancy reagan knew how important , it was for her to dress appropriately. This gold gown is from the second inaugural. There was a matching dress underneath and it was designed from one of her favorite designers that designed for her during her white house years. This each dress is mrs. Reagans lucky dress. Dress is mrs. Reagans lucky dress. She wore this when she attended the National Republican convention in 1980 when her husband was nominated to become president of the United States. She always loved it. It was designed by adolfo. He was her favorite color. She wore it quite a bit. It was one of her favorites. In 1985, president reagan flew to geneva to meet with gorbachev. Their first meeting, their first gorbachev summit. Mrs. Reagan wore this suit to that meeting. This suit was designed by james . Colona one of the truly, most classic dresses that she wore and the colors that she wore exemplified in this portrait dress. She wore it for her official portrait, but she also wore it to a number of other events. It is quite elegant and very stunning. Susan swain from her style, i want to do ask about the use of the white house for entertaining. There were lots of state dinners during the reagan years. How did they use them . Kirby hanson they used them strategically. Number they liked entertaining. One, having come from hollywood, the social life was important to them. But nancy reagan herself talks about this and when i. Terviewed her she said, this is an opportunity to play host to a visiting head of state. She said, you invite, any people will come and whoever the , Hollywood Stars at the time were, from Frank Sinatra to elizabeth taylor. You were invited and you came. That is true today for any president , but the reagans were very conscious of that and conscious that they could make a splash impress their , guests. She also said, you could get Business Done on these occasions. Yes, they were social but there was also business. Susan swain when you talk briefly about the gorbachev relationship . We have learned is so often on the diplomatic stage personal , relationships could have very important effects on outcome. What was important to note about these two couples and their relationship . Carl cannon well reagan thought , he could do business with gorbachev. That is the phrase he used to his aides. He brought his number one ally to the summit. The speeches kept getting changed. In the white house speechwriting shop. I need to black, who has been on black,ow i need to who has been on the show credits nancy for helping reagan push back. There was another man, matlock, who was a soviet expert. Reagan kept saying, i can do business with this guy. I dont want to be calling him names. And so nancy he took nancy there , as an ally to show the world that two couples could get along and maybe the two countries could get along. Susan swain we are talking about entertaining. She continued the tradition of live events from the white stage, rom a cultural introducing the public to some of the musicians and other cultural events. Kirby hanson that is a tradition that continues to this day, in performance at the white house. Not long ago, the obamas hosted one of these. It has become a regular. Carl cannon i think Jackie Kennedy started this. Susan swain another connection between the two first ladies. Floyd is in california. Are you there . Yeah, i had a question about how did the reagans interact with Prince Charles and Princess Diana when they went to visit the white house in 1985 . Thank you. Susan swain we just saw some video from that. Kirby hanson i wasnt covering the white house then, so i dont remember. It was everybody in the world who wanted to be at the white house probably wanted to be at that state dinner. Susan swain lets move on, because our time is going short, to an event that became very important and the ultimate disposition of the white house. Again from the perspective of , the first lady, this was a real crisis in confidence for the presidency. What was Nancy Reagans role in canceling the president on how to approach this . Counseling the a president on how to approach this . Carl cannon she thought it was a threat. She did two things. She doubled down on the negotiation on getting reagan to negotiate with gorbachev. She encouraged that because she thought that would be a better way to change the conversation. And the other thing she did, and obviously i havent mentioned him a lot on this show, but i should, my father who was raped was reagans biographer. Susan swain the one and only lou cannon. Carl cannon he told me recently in the green room that he thought the most important contribution nancy made was pushing on reagan to make the apology on irancontra. It may have saved his presidency. Susan swain figured it out in front of the story. Kirby hanson he had that funny speech. Susan swain it took him a while. Kirby hanson it was an agonizing period when the president did not want to recognize this was taking place. Ultimately what he said was, it happened and i didnt i cant believe it happened. It was a sort of a convoluted explanation but he did say that , in essence it was a mistake , and that broke the ice and the American People turned at that point. Susan swain i want to underscore this. We are talking about the image and influence of the first ladies. If i was a biographer this was a , key moment. Carl cannon this was an important contribution. And she had many of them. We were talking earlier about the dinner in 1982 but people forget, by the second term, by 1986, reagan at the white house Correspondents Dinner is joking about nancys influence. He says don regan and nancy had a lunch and they each brought their tasters. And so by the second term, nancys influence is acknowledged on the staff and on policy. Kirby hanson she is never acknowledged as much as others did but it was very much there. ,susan swain in 1987, nancy reagan was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and had a mastectomy. She decided to go public with this. Kirby hanson she did she talked , about it and handled it with grace. , events another, i think that drew the public to her because she was able to talk about it. She had a mastectomy and made it. By no means was this something that was easy to go through with but the fact that she could talk , about it at a time where it was still hush hush. Betty ford had been through her own episode, but i think for nancy reagan to do this susan swain we are going to hear one last piece of nancy reagan in her own voice looking at her role as a guardian of Ronald Reagan and the white house. This is her talking about her political antenna. Lets watch. Nancy reagan i have little antennas that went up totally and someone had their own agenda, and not ronnies. And then i would tell him. He wouldnt always agree with me, but i would tell him. And it worked out. What was the first thing you noticed when somebody had their own agenda . Nancy reagan you just know. I cant say. You just know. You have those antennas. [laughter] susan swain visible antennas were probably directed to don regan who ultimately lost his job and some of that was over the disagreement over the irancontra affair. We call this a phone book. What did we learn about their relationship through that . Carl cannon he wanted to get back at her, and the astrology thing was a poisonous arrow in the quiver. Know, they had different ideas about what reagan ought to have been doing. Nancy said she had an antenna. She was a careful listener. She tried to get george h. W. Bush to help her get rid of don regan, and he told her it was not his job. And she said it is your job. She was talking to the Vice President of the United States. Later, when bush was running for president in his own right he , said he would promise a kinder and gentler country. And nancys aside to a friend is kinder and gentler to whom . Nancy paid attention to what was said. Regan wonon but don the first. She was instrumental earlier in the presidency in the removal of William Clark because she felt he took took hard a line against the soviets. She wasnt the only but she one, played a big role. Susan swain she starts to really demonstrate her medical antenna on behalf of her husband and her influence inside that white house. Kirby hanson it is that we said earlier about her being the personnel director. Human resources director and personnel director for the president. Susan swain january 1989, they turned over the white house to reagans Vice President. George h. W. Bush. We have about 15 minutes to talk about a very long postpresidency. As we said at the beginning that , was marked fairly soon with the announcement of president reagans alzheimers. Before that, in very short order, his memoir came out. This was in 1989, so clearly she was working on it during the latter part of the white house years. My turn is the name of it. Her turn at what . How did she use this book . Carl cannon she used it she , talked about some of these aides. She told her side of the story but the book does not have any , surprising revelations in it. Not really, if you knew about nancy. She talks about how she supported the president. She supported reagan. You might say she wanted it both ways. She was very powerful, but if you crossed her, you would feel that but if you said she was , powerful, she would think you were dissing reagan. And she would push back on you. Susan swain and during the time of the opening of the Reagan Library how did the reagans , raise the money for the library and how did they use the library . Kirby hanson they you it, they went to their friends, many of whom gave a lot of money. Also through other foundations. They worked very hard through mrs. Reagan and initially to the president before he became ill. This was a way of not only telling Ronald Reagan story, but today it is seen as a way of maintaining Ronald Reagans legacy. We know in the Republican Party today, Ronald Reagan is still very much a revered figure as is nancy reagan. And the library is part of, not only, again telling what ronald , reagan did as president , what he believed in, but also perpetuating some of those views. They hold seminars, they hold speeches. They host, speakers, and talk about causes. It is a beautiful setting right there on the california coast. Susan swain philip is watching us in brooklyn. Caller yes, thank you. Wonderful program i love it. Let me say at the outset, i just love mrs. Reagan. First i have to say i watch every episode of this series and how nice it was to find out that nancy was not the first lady the first first lady that wanted to bring new china into the white house. I was very happy to hear there were other ladies that wanted to do that as well. And speaking about the china, and i mention it because, it didnt go on for weeks or months. It went on for almost a year. That china story. The media really went after her. I have to mention one of nancys , good friends, who was an expert at protocol such an , expert that the queen of england went to her for consultation. Nancy had friends like her that were poised and grace, and i think nancy when you have that much poise and grace, you are a perfect size fits, you are going to have some enemies. Every White House Administration has a very closeknit circle of friends, but it seems like the reagans had many, many years of supporters, and i was wondering how did mrs. Reagan and gender and cultivate all of those people that were so loyal to her and her husband . Susan swain thank you very much. Good question. Size . T kirby hanson she was a perfect size two, for the record. Or zero. Susan swain lets focun on her importance in keeping that circle of advisors together. So guided. Carl cannon it was a little different for reagan and nancy. He was a beloved conservative leader. Conservatives have been waiting for a guy like this regeneration, and the are still waiting a generation later. A guy like that comes along he is like roosevelt in that respect. People love what he stands for. Nancys situation was a little different. People love her. She has these lifelong friends and she cultivates them and she treat them well. I think, in that sense, if she was never in politics, she wouldve been an admirable person the way she kept friends. Susan swain how many good years did they have through the white house until the illness was a launched announced . Kirby hanson well they left the , white house in january 1989 and it was five years later in 1994 that he announced that he had alzheimers. So, i think there was a period of years, that is five years, and you can add a few years after that when he was communicating and recognizing her. But the point came in the late 1990s when she was telling people he did not recognize her. She was open about that. And then he died in 2004. Carl cannon in 1991, at the 80th birthday of reagan, it was at this library, Margaret Thatcher came and reagan got up , and spoke. He spoke glowingly about thatcher. He turned to nancy and he said his life began when he met her and it was rich and full ever since. There was a time when they left the white house that it was magical for them. This tour thatd mrs. Reagan did to cspan of the library in 1991, she talked about alzheimers and the effect on her. What have you learned about this disease . Nancy reagan it is probably the worst disease you can ever have. Why . Nancy reagan because you lose contact, and you are unable to share, and in this case unable to share all those wonderful memories that we have. We had we had a wonderful life. , can you have a conversation that makes sense to you . Nancy reagan not now. No. The letter itself, what were the circumstances in which he wrote the letter . Are you with him . Nancy reagan we were in the library i was with him and we , were in the library. He sat down and wrote it. That was it. First draft . Nancy reagan first draft. He crossed out one or two words in there. I think it was one or two. I dont know what that was. But only ronnie could write a letter like that. So as carl cannon told us earlier she devoted, once his illness became debilitating, she devoted her life to being his caretaker. But occasionally she would make a foray into the public arena. One of this was for the bush debate. You stayed in touch with her. You did this documentary recently. What is her own explanation of how she used these postwhite house years and when she decided to become public about issues and candidates that mattered to her . Kirby hanson mainly it was all , about pushing and preserving her husbands legacy. It was all about Ronald Reagan, the man that was at the center of her life for 55 years until his death. Her interests i think you were going to bring this up in Stem Cell Research, even when it was not a popular thing in the Republican Party, was all about its connection to alzheimers. And then she had friends who had children with juvenile diabetes. It was believed, and scientist argued, we need to do much more with Stem Cell Research than the United States had been doing. She lobbied president george w. Bush in the early 2000s when this was an issue. When again went against the party, she called members of congress. She was a fierce advocate. She made speeches for it. You could trace, i think everything she has done since something that has to do either with what her husband did or alzheimers. Susan swain in terms of party politics, in 1996, she was at the Republican Convention in san diego. She got involved in the mccain president ial efforts by endorsing him. When had she chosen to be involved with the Republican Party politics and why . Carl cannon well she knew john , mccain. She was there when he came back out of vietnam. The reagans are one of the first couples that mccain went to. I tend to think of that as an old friend another one of , nancys friendships in which she was loyal. She would not be now if you are entering the arena, we would not think of her as a right winger right wing of the Republican Party. We would think of her as a moderate republican. Were there any other social issues she was interested in . Kirby hanson it was mainly stem still cell. She was very strategic about it. She works with a team of people who are very involved in this issue. They planned way ahead about where can we use nancy, where can she go to make a speech, who can she call if she wanted to get it done . She was effective. Susan swain kim is in california. You are on. Caller i love your show. I watch every week. I was wondering what charities or groups is nancy reagan part of at this time . Kirby hanson you know, i can say, and i is already shared this with susan carlyle, she spoke with mrs. Reagan on the telephone today. We are fortunate to be able to speak with her. She is every bit as sharp as she has been. She is in very good spirits, but she does not get around as much as he used to. I think her ability to get out in public and do the kinds of things that she did for many years, that is something that is very limited. Doestill can get out and but it is not as much. , she is 92 years old and she is not as active in public but she still follows what is going on. She follows the news. She may be even watching this tonight. She is an avid follower of what is going on in american politics and american life. Susan swain just last week, her Office Released a statement about the passing of the reagan spokesman. He also had alzheimers. We just showed a picture of nancy reagan with michelle obama. Were there first ladies that she had a special relationship with . Do we know . Carl cannon i dont. Kirby hanson she certainly overlapped with barbara bush because they were Vice President , and president at the same time. But so, you know the reagans , left washington after. They were not around in washington during the bush presidency, and then before that they were not in washington. , she has been available to other first ladies. You just saw her there photographed with michelle obama. I know that laura, president george w. Bush and laura bush saw her from time to time. ,she has very much been focused on her husband when he was alive and since then on her life in , california. Susan swain justin is in indiana. You are on. Caller thank you for taking my call. This has been an excellent episode, i really enjoyed it. You kind of touched on it earlier about the special relationship between Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. I wanted to know what was nancys relationship to the factors, both margaret and her husband dennis . Know about the time when we will have a woman president in our country. Susan swain do you know anything about this . Carl cannon i know that she invited Margaret Thatcher to the Birthday Party of reagan. He asked about a woman president . Susan swain it was a statement. Carl cannon he may not have to wait that long. Susan swain and and we will do a very short series on first gentleman. We have about four minutes left and it is important for us to this 90 minute conversation. What is important, do you think, to know about nancy reagan in the role of first lady and her contributions to the reagan presidency . Kirby hanson i think it is what we have been saying. That she, you know first ladies , have long been, especially in the modern era close to their , husbands, have paid close attention to politics. I think nancy reagan took that to a new level. Because it wasnt so much she wanted to be sitting in cabinet meetings or policymaking meetings. She didnt do that. But she was very aware of her husband and wanted him to be successful and was ready to act. To make sure of that to make , sure that the people around him were serving his best interests and letting him be the best person that he could be. And in that way, she exerted enormous influence because she , would move a mountain to make sure her husband was protected. Susan swain you called president reagan a movement president. How should the public view Nancy Reagans term as first lady, first to terms of first lady . Carl cannon she was the personnel chief. Ok, but no personnel chief has ever slept with the president. But this one did she had more , influence. She had a new kind of influence. She was a very modern first lady in that sense. Ronald reagan their son told , judy in the excellent film that pbs did that she did her , best to make sure he could do his best. I was thinking about that this morning. She once said that she that , reagan preferred heights to valleys. And so she would make sure they would go up to the mountains. There is nothing for her to do a fair, but she majored she could be up there with him as often. She went with him and did it metaphorically. She was a height, not a valley. She lightened his mood. She helped him make a mark on the country that needed marking up. Susan swain as we are close here, we are actually going to listen to president reagans answer to that question. In a 1988 tribute to nancy reagan that happened in conjunction with the Gop Convention in that year, he talked about her and that is how we are going to close our program. And since we are closing with video, let me say thanks to both of you for being here tonight to tell the story of nancy reagan. We appreciate it. Kirby hanson thank you, susan. Carl cannon it has been a pleasure. Susan swain and now president , reagan in his own words about nancy reagan. Ronald reagan what do you say about someone who gives your life meaning . What do you say about someone who is always there with support and understanding . Someone who make sacrifices so that your life will be easier and more successful . What you say is that you love that person and you treasure her. [applause] i simply cant imagine the last eight years without nancy. The presidency would not have been the joy it has been for me without her there beside me. That second floor living quarters in the white house wouldve seen a big and lonely spot without her waiting for me everyday at the end of the day. She once said that a president has all kinds of advisers and experts who look after his interests when it comes to Foreign Policy or the economy or whatever. But no one who looks after me with the needs of a human being. Well nancy has done that for me. ,for me through recuperations and crises. Every president should be so lucky. I think [applause] i think it is all too common in marriages that no matter how much partners love each other, they dont thank each other enough. I suppose i dont thank nancy enough for all that she does for me. So nancy, in front of all your friends here today, let me say thank you for all that you do. Thank you for your love and thank you for just being you. [applause] [captions Copyright National cable satellite corp. 2016] [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Visit ncicap. Org] announcer remembering the life of nancy reagan, who died this morning at her home in los angeles. At a forum onpoke first ladies and Political Partners. Susan swain moderated the discussion, which turned to how history might remember Nancy Reagans legacy. Here is a look. I dont know if you know the story of how they met, but nancy davis was an actress in hollywood, enjoying the blacklist era and she found her name on a blacklist and wasnt sure how she was going to clear it. She was a young actress, and someone suggested she go to the head of the Screen Actors Guild to help her. Ronald reagan. That meeting turned into a long romance, and ultimately she was aware of his political ambitions, because even in the Screen Actors Guild, so much involved in politics. What she did throughout, and you will remember she had early missteps when she came to washington. She was always known throughout the Political Partnership as the person who had his back. She waspersonnel called the personnel director. She watched everyone that surrounded that person and make sure they were loyal to him first and foremost, and if they werent, they walked. She had a big role. Ronald reagan really was as nice a guy as you here. But more than that, he was as close to being without guile as any president in american history. He believed in people, and he did not automatically assume that people had agendas of their own. Which is all edible admirable , but it places a burden on someone, whether it is a white house chief of staff white in , to case a spouse compensate for that unqualified trust that reagan gave to people. And i believe, what history say, mrs. Beginning to reagan will get even more credit for the enormous role that she. Layed behind the scene first of all, as a substantive clinical partner, advisor and the judge. And secondly, absolutely from the role she played in protecting that is what she was interested in. She was there to protect her husband. Sometimes maybe from himself. Announcer on the next washington journal, we get your thoughts on the passing of former first Lady Nancy Reagan. And then paul taylor on his book which exports demographics and how they are changing. We also look at the history of thirdparty candidates. Of the the Director Center for politics at the university of virginia. We also take your calls and look for comments on facebook and twitter. Washington journal live at 7 00 eastern on cspan. Republican president ial candidate senator marco rubio of florida has been projected of the winner in the puerto rican republican primary. The center has a big lead over challengers donald trump, texas senator ted cruz and, ohio Governor John Kasich. 23 delegates are at stake. Maine will be voting and caucuses this evening around that state. Republican president ial candidate Governor John Kasich campaigned in his home state of ohio today. Join the governor was former california governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The ohio president ial primary will be held on march 15. This is about 40 minutes. [applause] pick up the guns, here comes the terminator. Is that his wife . Kasich, kasich. [clapping with music] [applause] arnolds. [cheering] [applause] oh my god. The governator. Oh my god. [cheering] [applause] good afternoon. After school, i save my life. School when i was in sixth grade. I grew up in a singleparent home and watched my older brother struggle with Gang Activity after school. After my brother was shot, i knew i needed to choose another path. That was the path that changed my life. I am now in my first year of college, and i am very grateful for the organization that was founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger. [applause] it is my honor to introduce to you governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Thank you there he much for the wonderful introduction, because so proud of you you chose the right path. Can choose theds right path is if we give them the opportunities, and this is why we started the afterSchool Programs because it gives kids a chance to have adults to position after school. More than 30 of the kids come from homes where both of the parents are working, so there is no one there to take them to sports fields and train them and help them with their challenges. This is why afterSchool Programs are so important. We are wonderful we are glad for the wonderful work you are doing. Lets give him a big hand again. [applause] i have to tell you, i love ohio. [applause] arnold i love ohio. It is such a wonderful state. I remember in 1970 my love affair began here. Before i talk about my love affair, i want to say briefly and recognize the passing of nancy reagan today. She was one of the greatest , and extraordinary human being, and such a wonderful partner to her husband, president reagan. He was without a doubt one of the greatest president s of United States. [applause] and i know she would join us in heaven and this love affair between the two will start all over again. Lets please have a moment of silence for nancy. Thank you. That let me talk about my love affair with ohio. Jim, come over here for a second. Just come over here, jim, because it is important that you see the person that is. Esponsible with my love affair right here he is. Give him a big hand. This is my partner. [applause] jim ran the World Championships in weightlifting and in bodybuilding in 1970, and i won that competition. And i told him that competition was so well run, that i would come back after i retired from bodybuilding, and he would be my partner, and we would be running the World Championships in columbus, ohio. That is exactly what happened. Decades6 on, for four we have been running every year the World Championships and bodybuilding right here in columbus, ohio. [applause] i just came from there, because this weekend is the honor of classic fitness festival. It has grown to the biggest event in the world. 200,000 people are going through there and watching those events. We have 56 different sports, and we have almost 20,000 athletes participating. Think about that. The olympics have 12,000 athletes, and we have almost 20,000 athletes participating. This has really been the highest success when it comes to sports, fitness, and the promotion of health and fitness. This is what it is all about. The only way we could have done it is because of the great work and the dedication and the passion of the people of ohio, and specifically of columbus. A big hand to all the people that work so hard to make this happen. [applause] now one day, my friend said to me, arnold, you are coming for the classic, and for sports and fitness festival, i want you to meet a guy by the name of john kaisich, who is running for congress. This was back in the 1980s. I said i am coming. I came to the event, i listened to john kasich. And he was extraordinary what he said. And from that point on, i was campaigning for him, and i was doing fundraisers for him, and let me tell you something when he went to washington, he kicks some serious butt. He was an action hero when he went to washington. As the chairman of the house budget committee, he pushed through the first balanced budget. The first balance budget since a man walked on the moon. Think about that for a second. [applause] so he showed real action. Then when he ran for governor, i said to him, i will be back. [laughter] and he ran, and i was there again, and his fundraisers, and i did of vents for him and everything. Events for him and everything. And then he became governor of the great state of ohio. And once again he was the action hero. He went in there, there was an 8 billion budget deficit. Now there is a 2 million surplus. [applause] and not only that, he did this without raising taxes. As a matter of fact he did the , opposite. He reduced taxes by 5 billion. Think about that. By 5 billion he reduced the taxes. [applause] and at the same time, he created more than 300,000 jobs. We always talk about those numbers, 300,000, the percentage all of those things. , it does not mean that much, but each person goes home, and says i can provide for my family. I have a job. I am somebody. It makes you feel good when you have a job, when you feel wanted, when you feel needed that it is what it means for , each person, each of those 300,000. So john you have done such an , extraordinary job, and in so it means so much when those people go to work. This is the kind of action hero he is. I tell you, he will be like that if he will be in washington, because right now we need leadership like that. There is so much work that needs to be done. [applause] i tell you, i am an immigrant, i came here in 1968 with absolutely nothing, but i was full of dreams. And because this is the land of opportunity, because of america, i could make all of my dreams become a reality. Through hard work and dedication, i was successful in bodybuilding, in show business, i became governor of the state of california, i made a lot of money, all because of america. This is the land of opportunity, it is the greatest nation in the world, no matter what anyone says out there. [applause] and we need john kasich to now take charge and be at the white house. And this is why i endorse john kasich, our great governor. [cheers] to be our republican nominee, and to be the next president of the United States of america, the greatest country in the world. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome a very good friend, Governor John Kasich. [applause] governor kasich thank you. Thank you. Thank you, everybody. Well, let me just say to begin, by the way, that is the case express. Kasich express. It just keeps rolling. It just keeps rolling along. I want to say word about nancy reagan, because today my wife is going with me for a couple of days on the trail. And i am thrilled that she is going to be with me. My staff is thrilled because they say that she keeps me in line. I have a sense that was a little bit that way with nancy reagan and her husband, and she looked out for him every step of the way. And she made sure that the people who were [laughter] you have got a little hair on you. Gov. Kasich she didnt do that. She made sure the people who were around him, were committed to what he believed in. She was an incredible lady. She was very strong, and a total class act. And i have got to tell you, she is now with her ronnie and with the lord, and it is great. So god bless them, and God Bless America for what Ronald Reagan and nancy reagan did for this country. [applause] i do not know how much you really know about arnold. You know about him as the terminator, you know about him as the big actor. He is going to be on this new great stroke, celebrity apprentice, you will see that soon. He is building another terminator. And he is taking the arnold classic global. They are on all the confidence now. All continents now. As governor of california, businessman, all of it. But this young man who was here, i dont know if you heard what he was saying. He knew he needed to change his life, because he knew if he did not change his life he would , probably lose his life. It was a number of years ago when arnold created the afterSchool Allstars. This is a program that takes kids who could very easily join a gang, find themselves in drugs, totally isolated from everyone, without being able to realize their godgiven potential. This afterSchool Allstars is an incredible program, and it is growing. I went to california back when i was in television, and i went to where arnold was going to be a great and i said have you ever seen arnold here . They said he is here all the time. He is here with the kids, he gives 100 of himself. Because of his commitment to afterSchool Allstars, and what they have done for children who need to find their way, we are now running one of the biggest afterschool allstar programs in any state outside of the state of california. It has been his leadership that inspired me to make sure that this program is funded, and has strong support. Love them. [laughter] gov. Kasich and i have been loving them ever sense. This is like moguls. Eat of the moguls. Thats what he told me. Then when i won, he gave me this jacket. I dont know if you can see it, but i officially am the governor two. [laughter] gov. Kasich how about that. I slept in it for a month. When i talk about the kasich expressed that just keeps chugging along. Back in 1977, when i was running as a 24yearold kid, we had a newsletter called the kasich express. And it just keeps chugging along. I got into this race with my team, because you do not do anything without a team. Because the country really needs help. The country really needs leadership. I think the reason why arnold and i are friends is because we both admire great leadership. We talked about Ronald Reagan. Ronald reagan enable people to enabled people to play at a much higher level than they would normally play. When we think about great leaders like winston churchill, those people over there, every nice they were bombed, every night they had role in the every night they were bombed. Every night, there was rubble in the street. He went on to say we we would never give in. These kinds of leaders allow us to reform and accomplish real things in our lifetime. When i think about Ronald Reagan i think about the resurgence of america. But you know what else i think about . The nights when we watched the berlin wall tumbling down, and people who jumped on that wall with their little hammers, and im not sure what they were pounding, maybe they were pounding out their hopes, and their dreams, and their spite at those security guards that try to deny them their godgiven potential. But leadership can bring about great things. Do we have challenges and problems today . Oh yes, we do. There is a lot of people who are worried that their jobs one day will not be there anymore. Thats some crazy trade deal that some crazy trade deal will hit them up the backside of their head, and someone will walk in and say you are out of work. You are 52 years old and dont know what the future is. These are people who put money in the bank, expecting to get interest. They got zero. They watched a lot of people who had well be able to buy into the stock market and do well when they were stuck. Wages were not moving. How about the mom and dad who have hopes and dreams for their daughters, but they are living in the basement after ringing up a huge college debt and have no prospects for the future. The senior that worries about their Social Security. The young people who believe there is a better chance of an a socialo the security check. Those who wonder can we be safe and america . Are we a leader of the world anymore . These are real issues. I grew up in that town. I saw in the wind blew the wrong way, people were out of work. Many of you have been with me for many years. I have never lost in my minds eye, i have never lost the sense that people sometime feel powerless, but they have no one to represent them, that feels that nobody stands out for them. That nobody stands out for them. That is what i have been dedicated to. Creating economic security, opportunity, giving you a voice. People who sometimes feel that it is rest in a fourway city or a faraway place it does not rest in a faraway city for a faraway place. [applause] i was in mississippi, Hurricane Katrina came in and level the entire town, and nothing left. A couple of safes from the bank were left. They put all the cash in a winnebago, and the sound card tables, and people got cash they needed to survive. They rode out ious, and when all was said and done, and they lost about 300. When regulators showed up to look at the winnebago bank, they were told to get back in their cars and get out of here, because we know what we are doing. There are stores all over the country of people standing up, fixing things. The last thing i want to tell is this, do you all understand that you are made special . Do you know that the lord has never made anybody like you, and will never make any money like anybody like you again . You have purpose. Part of your purpose was to be here today. You stood up. Did you ever think you would be doing Something Like that in front of governor schwarzenegger and all these people . No. But you are reaching out. We all have to discover our godgiven purpose. I believe that when we work together, we are a great, beautiful mosaic. When we do not discover our purpose, the mosaic is incomplete. I think when we work together, we need to live a life bigger than ourselves to help heal this world. Let me give you a couple of examples. You are a nurse, you are done at 10 00 p. M. Tonight, you are dead tired. But you walk into the room or that family is sitting on the edge of their chairs, worried about their loved ones. You take a few more minutes to say, it is going to be ok. Or if you are a teacher, and you gave up the salaries because you big salaries because you believe that you are changing the lives of young people, you found your purpose. And you are a physician, and you call the patient at 11 30 p. M. At night because you cannot sleep, you are living your purpose. Sometimes it is not even that complicated. [applause] gov. Kasich were coming up to an election. They will have an election in michigan on tuesday. Let them when yesterday in basketball. We are covering everything, ok . We are going to do well. We are going to do well. Then were coming here. We are coming here. [applause] gov. Kasich i think it is important that in ohio, we not only send the message to the country, but we send the message to the world that positive efforts in politics and not namecalling, slimy, or make suggestions about how you are going to fix things set a positive message in raising the bar for our kids will win. We will move america forward. Thank you all very much, and god bless you all. Thank you. [applause] governor kasich was a guest on this week this morning talking about the ohio primary. Lindsey graham talked about the president ial race on meet the press and Hillary Clinton talked about the investigations surrounding her state department emails. We start with governor kasichs comments. The game plan was to do well in new hampshire, which we achieved. To pick up delegates, and were closing fast in michigan. It is like march madness, we and ioved to the midwest will win ohio and it will be a whole new ballgame. It, there are some places in the south that we just did not compete aggressively did aggressively. If nominated, will you accept the nomination . If you were elected at the cleveland convention, would you accept it . Gov. Romney i wouldnt say no to that, but i am not a candidate, im not going to be a candidate, im going to be endorsing one of the people that is running. I can guarantee you, one of the people running for president is going to be the nominee. 4 are people i would endorse, but i am not running. I think rubio and kasich have they be ancan alternative to trump overtime . Ted has made the best case. The best think that could happen is for the party to unite in ohio and florida and make sure that we not only beat him, but we have a candidate who can beat him thereafter. Ted cruz has the best case to be made. When this happened, i talked to democrats, and they worry that somebody is going to get indicted. Heinton im delighted has agreed to cooperate as everyone else has. Im sure we will move toward a resolution to this. You see this as good news . Sec. Clinton i do. We are getting closer and closer to wrapping this up. There were reports today about the hundreds of officials and thousand emails that they were looked atat have been and classified retroactively. This raises serious questions about the whole process. When powell summed it up he was told that some of his emails from 12 years ago would be retroactively classified. He called it absurdity. I hope people take harder look at the interagency disputes and the arguments over retroactive classification. Im the one that asked all my emails be made public. Ive been more transparent than anybody i can think of in public life. It is also true that when something is made public, everybody from across the government gets to weigh in. That is what is happening here. We need to sort it out and take action. Senator marco rubio of florida has been projected as the winner in the puerto rican republican primary. Lead overr has a big donald trump, texas senator ted cruz, and ohio Governor John Kasich. 23 delegates are at stake. Later, democrats in maine will vote at caucuses being held around that state. Host joining us on newsmakers is the Ranking Member of the judiciary committee, senator patrick leahy, democrat of vermont. Thanks very much for being with us. Sen. Leahy happy to be here. Host and joining us with the questioning is john bresnahan. He is the Congressional Bureau chief for politico. And david herszenhorn, who is New York Times congressional reporter. Thank you for being with us. Senator, i want to begin with the crs report that said in 1992, the chair of the judiciary committee, your colleague, joe biden, now Vice President , had blocked the nomination of 32 George Herbert walker bush federal judicial nominations that year. Is that accurate . Sen. Leahy no, that is not accurate
