Is headline politico. Com, the Georgia Special elections hurdles toward a nailbiting finish. The voting taking place on tuesday. Joining us on the phone is dan lippman, reporter and coauthor of politicos playbook. Well talk about the week ahead in washington, but dan, lets first talk about this special election in georgia, because thats going to dominate a lot of the political talk in the days ahead. Caller thats very true, steve. It seems people are concerned that democrats arent thrilled about john ossa, but they feel like theres a lot of energy on the democratic side. Theyve lost a couple of elections they wanted to win. So its a real test in this most expensive congressional race ever, whose side pulls it out. Host any indication from early voting on what that could preview tuesday night . Gerry i think theres been a ton of early votes that is sometimes hard to read the tea leaves, but usually more turnout helps democrats, and so we have seen record early voting, and that could be an indication that ossoff has a good chance of winning on tuesday. Host lets talk about the president s week ahead. Hes spending his first weekend at camp david. What are some of the ighlights . Gerry melania and barron are joining him at camp david. Hes previously said that he ould the retreat yet. But i cant really see him going very often to camp david. He got under a little criticism yesterday for not responding as quickly to those seven sailors that went missing and were later found dead off the coast of japan. But he responded a few hours late to that, and tweeted in the hopes that they would be found. Scommoip that tweet that also came to, along with the photograph at politico. Com, with the sense of just how severe the damage is. Thoughts and prayers are with the sailors of the u. S. S. Fits gerald and their families. Thanks to our japanese allies for their assistance. We do know that a number of the president s cabinet members are going to be back on capitol hill again testifying on their respective budget, but already people are saying the president s budget, so often even with previous president s, dead on arrival. Gerry yeah, thats completely true, especially with this budget, because the supposed cuts were so drastic that republicans think that it would be political suicide to enact these cuts. You know, when republicans are sticking up for e. P. A. Cuts, the e. P. A. Budget, thats an indication that this budget, which was designed by mull vainy, trumps o. M. B. Director, you know, is not going to be enacted. Its interesting to see republicans and democrats united on capitol hill in some critical areas where they say, why should we be cutting, you know, meals on wheels or food stamps . The government should be helping people who cant afford food to make sure they dont starve. But i do expect like some of the budget cuts to the state department or u. S. A. To go forward, because they cant reject everything that trump has, especially because it is a Republican Congress after all. Host dan lippman, final question for you. Obviously this town still trying to grasp the shooting that took place last wednesday in alexandria, virginia. Anything that we can expect this week from members of congress on that front . Gerry i think theyre still working through what they wanted to achieve with more security. Most congressmen, they dont want to have a Capitol Police officer surrounding them at all times, both in washington and outside of washington, and so i wouldnt expect anything this week. Were all waiting to see how steve scalise, you know, continues to improve. There was a report yesterday from the hospital that he was talking with family, his condition was upgraded, and so thats very good news that we all hope continues this week.
