Reat bobby knight would do numbers on the referee and toward the end of the game, they would subconsciously give him the calls and he was a master at it. They are doing the same thing now. It matters. Weve got to get people to vote. Fact, if you want to give me and michelle a sendoff, get people registered to vote. If you care about our legacy, done iseverything weve at stake. Ow would that look like also, why does he think he can change the roles . When he answers a question, he verbally restates what the question was. He throws in a lot of additives. He repeats his phrases twice and then he turns his attack on his opponent every question. Every phrase and comment. Her detrack psychiatric nurse, it is a maneuver and tactic to gain support. Linda from the republican line. Caller you hear a lot about donald trump not joining the military. Then again, women have always joined, why did till you hear Hillary Clinton joining. . Host this is the headline thursday. Trump tells the Washington Post that he is unwilling to say obama was born in the u. S. Friday thatan event many say he took the media on a ride. Robert thank you. The let me ask you how events unfolded. Guest theres been a lot of. Oncern trump was able to have medal of winners medal of honortrump wo support them. Finally at the in said that yes present obama was born in the United States. This can about because trump had to clarify. Advisors were saying one thing and he was not clear where he was. Host your colleagues this the Washington Post said despite the statement, the birther issue will hot trump in this issue will certainly come up again. Weve heard from the president and others say this is a racist move. Long before he started. Is campaign, he started this in the private sector, he was a getting as obama to release his longform birth certificate. Trump took credit for that on friday. The trump who led the Birther Movement finds himself locked in a competitive race with just eight weeks ago in the general election and that trump is not making sure the birther side of trump does not hurt to much. Donald trump pulling ahead in some of these key states. My question is, why . Is Hillary Clinton losing support . Is donald trump gaining support . Guest even though the news ,overage is dominated by trump theres many more things swirling out there in the , especially with secretary clinton. Theher its how she handled health, her time as secretary of state, the use of the word the portable the the horrible seeing. What we are clinton is a historic candidate. She is very popular with many them a craft. Clinton has very high unfavorable ratings. Represents change in a sense. He does have appeal host . How are Hillary Clinton and donald trump for this first debate . Guest trump is spending today in new jersey at his golf course. He will be there with his aides and confidants. Trump is not really using briefing books or going over specific policies. Its about figuring out what. Linton is going to do weve been asking our viewers what is the first question you would Ask Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. If you were moderating that first debate, what would be your question to each of them . Guest i think the most important question in these debates is how do you see the presidency . As a reporter, we often get tied and thee daily coverage mistakes and the controversy and the drama. At the end of the day, we are trying to find out what these people would be like if they are elected as president of the United States . How would they do find a job . We appreciate you joining us. Im sure we will be talking a lot more. Thank you for being with us. Our question is what is your question . The number one question you would ask the candidates in the debate . I would have to moderator littermate to push ranters. And this one for michael the media took themselves for a ride friday. Built up the promises of an announcement. Says newler immigration tariffs would explode the deficit. We will go to rachel joining us from taxes. My question would be if you respect women, why would you hire roger ailes to run your campaign and also he was known to sexually harass women and my other question would be if youre so smart on hunting down out, rists and routing them smirnoff to are not realize the president was born in the United States . Recordssuch things as buildings where you go to get that. Roger ailes who is not workshan campaign for Richard Nixon and famously advised George Herbert walker bush. From detroit. Welcome to the conversation. I have one question i would like to Ask Donald Trump. Would beis question selected and i hope the major news channels would ask this question. Save towould like to the lady that Hillary Clinton needs to open her heart more. She has shown she opened her heart for the things she has fought for. My question is since donald trump said he would release his taxes if Hillary Clinton would release her medical records for the rest of the emails or whatever, he said he would do that. Since he said that, he does have the ability to release his taxes the people seet his taxes before the end of. Eptember we need to demand that he releases those papers because he has the ability. He said he would do it. So either he is lying again or he wants to play it like the apprentice and keep the suspicion going. Five questions you wont hear asked at the president ial debate. Lets go tory marry from new york. Caller im listening to the previous two colors. Im totally disappointed and citizens to think that of the u. S. Would come up with degrading statements. Think one, i dont president obama was born in the United States. He wasnt. When Hillary Clinton was , you wentof state into meeting with north korea and you started talking the talk as usual. Andnorth koreans stood up laughed and walked out of that meeting. How could she have the audacity to go into any kind of negotiations with the koreans, the very ones who walk out on her . She was such a disgrace as secretary of state and dont is the one clinton who said we should have sympathy for the terrorists. Gary johnson will not be part of the first part of the debate. From time magazine, a look at Stephen Colbert and jimmy kimmel and jimmy fallon. Comics are ditching balance and taking sides. Host with go to jack from maryland, independent line. I would ask what are you going to do to prevent a future cold war with the russians . The cold war was in a terrible time when we had atomic weapons aimed at each other. This is going to happen again if we dont get a handle on a very aggressive Foreign Policy. Hillary clinton wants to act like it is the same old days and that is really dangerous. She still feels like she can bully the media like she did in the 90s. I have to echoed the sentiments of the caller from the new york that was just on the air. You have folks more concerned thanwhat trump has said what Hillary Clinton has done when she was secretary of state. Sad state of the world. Im not a huge trump supporter but im looking at the opinion me of corruption and deceit and dishonesty on who the democrats hand isd i feel like my being forced. I cannot be part of anything that would allow Hillary Clinton to win. Im disgusted at that candidate. Ho saudis . And from our facebook page, a lot of comments including this from kenneth hall. What trump plans to stop north korea from violating launching of missiles that he continues to do since obama is scared of him . Saying if you can make a deal with the other candidates to unify the parties, what would it be . We will go to mike in florida. Caller mr. Trump, i would like to give you 90 seconds to speak on any national topic and secondly please dont refer to yourself in the first person. Host the president ial debates may be a deciding factor for many. Something that occurred in their only debate that took place in cleveland, ohio. Reagan defeating the incumbent president. Read from the democratic line. Caller i love this program. I watch it every day. Would would be about corruption. Because what they say and what they do when theyre running for office or in front of the media are two different things. Viewers to gour. O the Washington Times website helped blockon regulations that would have tied tightened regulations against freddie mac. In 2004, she helped a builder. Inance a Shopping Center a month later he donated one of 100,000 dollars to the Hillary Clinton foundation. I just wanted to point out a couple of things about her corruption. My instinct tells me there could be hundreds of these. George will writing about the Pennsylvania Senate race. His ventingss his business. I want to share with you the he said the following parties says theres really no happy ending for the Republican Party. If donald trump winds, the porters rupture with its past is complete and air repairable. If he loses narrowly, there will be an or g of intramural. Ecriminations that is this morning from george will. Line. Independent i have two questions. The first one is during the vietnam war, bill and hillary went to the war to protest the war. I would ask if they would do it again. Think they were there together. The second question is during the release of the it was shown that former senator mendez leaked his first two questions to chelsea and i want to know if hillary thinks that was right. Shouldally, i think we continue obamas legacy and vote for trump. The impact that immigration could have on the upcoming election. Some republicans joining us from washington state. I agree with a lot of the callers about the negatives of both of the candidates and obviously we dont have any good and it is very discouraging and upsetting. Worst and troubling thing is proclivity to be attractive to white supremacists. If you months back there was a program on npr and looked at his tweets and found out that he looked at a random sampling of a lot of different people and their tweets and a very large percentage of tweets and retreats for his account was from white supremacists. Compared toy high everybody else. More more, that seems to be where it is headed. Where youondering planning to come out to the white supremacist before you get elected or after you get elected . This is an alarm bell. It seems to be mounting evidence that this is kind of what it is like in preheller days or it we he really is. He is currently machiavelli and and i want to know when he is going to come out as a white he really is. Hesupremacist . Hillary, do feel nafta was middler workers and the class . Fair for the is very rich to play pay little to no taxes . Finally, how will you reverse the effects of Climate Change and will you fight drilling and fracking . A look at donald trump at the new trump hotel. An event that took place. Good morning, welcome to the program. I would ask the candidates about health care and always hearis i everyone say take a look at the Insurance Companies. The Insurance Companies get built from the hospitals. They pass that on to people who have health insurance. Mother passed away, i got an itemized list from the hospital. One aspirin was 14. I think what the candidates need , lets take a look at the hospitals and doctors. Recently, i went to the doctor. I think the problem with health care is not so much the Insurance Companies, it is the hospitals and doctors charging exorbitant prices. Host sorry about the loss of her mother, that was a good question. Says sherom carol who would like to know how congress will pass bills across party lines. The deadline is the end of the month. Mcconnellan and indicating that they will reach some sort of agreement. Last word. Get the caller i would like to Ask Donald Trump if he thinks that ,he Electoral College is rigged if he thinks the press is against him, if he thinks the presidency is running, rigged quietly running why is he running . Writing aboutbeen another number of things. We will talk we look at the issue of president ial health. Well have more on that, Richard Levenson talks about the president s and their health. Here is a preview. The second theme that i want to focus on tonight is the idea that president s always been truthful and honest with congress and the American People about the state of their health. Well, sadly, that is another myth. And thats true partly because people never or almost never give up great power voluntarily. And the other thing, and i would say if theres one takeaway from tonights talk, youre about to hear it. The other thing is that a president s shortterm political needs always trump longer term health concern. Lways, always, always. The first president i want to talk about is actually a democrat, finally. Robert cleveland who was a democrat from the state of new york, the only american president to serve two nonconsecutive terms. And he had the misfortune to serve his second term during what was the worst economic crisis in the United States until the great crash of 1929. Cleveland was not a brilliant man but he had a lot of common sense. And he was a democrat who embraced the Gold Standard which meant that he was popular on wall street, that he had good relationships there. And so cleveland working with people in the business in financial communities i think was slowly but effectively working his way out of this mess when one morning, he awakes to discover a lump on the roof of his mouth that had not been there two or three days before. [captions Copyright National cable satellite corp. 2016]] [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Isit ncicap. Org] and the lump was cancer rows. And now, cleveland is truly panicked. Host we want to welcome eliana johnson, her work available on line at the National Review washington. Thanks for being with us. Guest thanks for having me. The Ohio Senate Race is a key race. George willis writing about pennsylvania and ill ask you about that in a moment but some new poll out showing the incumbent is now moving ahead of democrat Ted Strickland. What did you see in ohio if John Portland is dismembering Ted Strickland which is surprising given over a year, every poll shows strickland leading the first public poll taken by nine points. And ohio was really expected to be one of the most Competitive Senate races but for the past several months, portland has been ahead on the race and is not considered competitive anymore chase surprise. I spent last weekend in ohio really trying to look at why portland has jumped ahead and why republicans now are really writing that race off. Democrats have pulled their ads off the air. And republicans are starting to pull their ads off the air because they are quite confident that portman is going to win. Host this is the same time that donald trump is up anywhere from three to five points and Hillary Clinton was ahead right after the convention. Guest yeah, and portman you know, trump had a really tough time after the convention. He was expected to drag portman down in ohio and that was the time he cemented his lead. He was an extremely competitive guy and hired the best Campaign Manager available and he has really run an absolutely meticulous ground game. Hes not the most charismatic guy but hes gotten the endorsement solve several unions ohio who have also endorsed Hillary Clinton and her campaign. Meanwhile, i attend dinner of hunters and sportsman in ohio. Lots of people wearing never hillary gear. So hes managed to appeal to people all across the political spectrum in ohio. Host we have some ads on that race. First, this is an ad now in ohio for senator rob portman running for reelection. Im sheriff bill plummer. There are things you need know about Ted Strickland. As governor, he cut fundings for drug treatment and prevention. Now ohios in this heroin epidemic that takes more than a thousand lives a year. It makes it tougher for guys like me to keep you safe. I know the facts on Ted Strickland. Now, you do too. Support rob portman. I know he will help keep ohio safe. Host as you look at that ad what, is this issue about in ohio . Guest opioid issue has come of the forefront in ohio. And bill portman is somebody who has done, you know, sort of a masterful job of avoiding controversy but getting things done on less controversial issues. He forced obamas hand in signing legislation on the opioid issue and has done a lot of campaigning on that lots and lots of people in southern ohio in particular affected by the lix ed you and opioid and heroin epidemic. We saw it play in New Hampshire as well in the president ial race. Host and Ted Strickland with this campaign ad focused on his opponent, rob portman. It was difficult just not knowing what was coming up next. To have the support from strickland was huge. 800,000 ohioans could have been at risk of losing their jobs. Rob portman allows the deal. Thats how he didnt get it. It shows how out of touch he is with real ohio families. Have we not receive that health, it would have devastated ohios community. Im ted portman and i approve this message. Host so take a step back. What has strickland been doing wrong that has allowed him to flip in the polls and what has portman done right beyond the ground game . Guest theres larger issues that helped portman and hurt strickland. Strickland first ran for and ss as a procoal progun democrat in 1974 and he took a job for a center for american progress. And democrats today, there isnt very much room in the party to be a procoal, progun type of person the way that you democrats are most successful if they run in ohio with those positions. So when he was primary, he ran against more liberal democrats in the primary and had a tough time explaining where he stood on gun control and on coal because he had championed restrictions at clean coal regulations pushed by the e. T. A. When he came out to washington to work. Portman on the other hand has been able to fete the endorsements of the union and i think hes been helped by a trend of sort of more blue collar middle class down scale whites who have including Union Workers who have come into the Republican Party. We have really seen that this year. And he has announced hes voting against the Transpacific Partnership which is a big deal for a guy who was United States trade representative in the bush administration. Host our phone lines are open. We would love to hear from you. Our line for democrats, 2027488000, 2027488001 for republicans and if youre an independent, 2027488002. We welcome to our listeners on cspan radio. Check out our free radio app and on podcast as well. And our guest is the National Review washington editor eliana johnson. I want to share with you the comments of charles on donald trump. He talked about some of the issues in this election saying can you repackage the bullying bombastic insulting insensitive trump into a melo and caring ellow and caring version host in the essence of his piece is donald has become more focused. Hillary has been more sharp in her attacks. Her numbers are down. His numbers are up. Guest thats not actually true. When trump got what might have been the best week of his campaign, tons of polls show the rates really tightening particularly in a lot of swing states. And then he shot himself in the foot by coming out on thursday and saying he wasnt ready to say that the president in fact had been born in the United States. He issued a period on some pages and held a press conference on friday and then again on friday calling for the secret service, calling Hillary Clinton to disarm. So it really did seem that this new Campaign Team he had surrounded himself with had succeeded and forming him into a more disciplined candidate. But, you know, to charles point, i think that we saw friday that that could only succeed for so long. Host so give us your snapshot. A lot can happen between now and november 8. Early voting going on. But the state of this race for Hillary Clinton is what and the state for the race for donald trump is what if guest for Hillary Clinton right now, i think she had the worst week of her campaign, the worst couple of weeks of her campaign after her battle with pneumonia and her campaigns dishonesty about it. The race is extremely close. Much closer than the democrats would like right now but still favors her. For donald trump had absolutely the best week, the couple of weeks of his campaign. People beginning to think as charles called in saying he really have a shot at winning this race. But, again, his comments at the end of the week beginning to raise those old doubts again. But if his Campaign Team can succeed once again in reeling him in, you know, still a long shot but definitely has people are beginning to think again. He does have a path to those 207 electoral votes. Host 29 people injured. New york daily news, the fact that its an intentional act so far and the mayor saying theres no link to terrorism. Donald trump indicating it might be terrorism. How do these kind of uncertain events impact the psyche of the voters . Guest we talk about the october surprise and this is exactly the type of event that really could shape the country. Fortunately, nobody fatally wounded, but since we dont know what happened, if it does turn out to be linked to terrorism, its absolutely the type of event that really could have an enormous impact on the race. Host well go to your phone call. C. J. From magnolia, kentucky. Democrats line. Good morning. John hello. When democrats gave up Social Security and medicare, why did republican fight it . And explain why benghazi was worse than reagans 200 marines bombed in lebanon when reagan was first in. Host c. J. Explained earlier about Social Security. What are you referring to . John when it passed when roosevelt was president , then right on the last, a few of them switched over to make it look like they wouldnt know. Host thank you for the call after historical question and what happened in libya with Ronald Reagan back in the 1980s. Guest ill take the second question first. I think the answer that to put t in historical context, the bombing to the Marine Barracks took place in the cold war and it was easier for people to overlook because president reagan was extremely aggressive in his prosecution of the cold war and perceived to be so. And it wasnt the kind of didnt turn into this sort of incident that benghazi attack took into the taking place on the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in history. And again, i think there was this sort of lack of transparency from the Obama Administration and he perception that the administration wasnt being honest with the American People about what happened. So i think those differences account for, you know, the difference in the way that the media treated the two incidents. Host and it was 1983 in beirut and lebanon, not libya. James from brockton, massachusetts, republican line. Good morning. Welcome to the program. John good morning. I just wanted to ask your guest she want made a reference to the movement in donald trump saying that he refused to deny the fact that the birther incident they didnt want to answer it but my understanding and my belief on the other newscast was that he was putting it off because he wanted to make the announcement on friday and the only reason he didnt answer that was he had it planned out for his News Conference on friday. Thank you. Host james, thank you from brockton, massachusetts. Guest yeah, thats a great question. My understanding of what transpired is and i could be wrong about this, but my understanding what transpired was trump was asked about it aboard his plane by the Washington Post on wednesday and he declined to answer it. And that created a real hubbub in his campaign attempted to intervene and in fact, release a sort of tortured statement saying no, mr. Trump in fact does believe the president was born on the United States. On his plane he rebuffed his Campaign Manager when she tried to say that she doesnt believe the president was born in the United States and he said no, shes speaking for herself and im speaking for me and im not ready to answer that question. And as a result of the ensuing controversy over what he had said wednesday, thats why the press conference was held friday that there would have been no press Conference Friday had not the controversy erupted because of his statement Late Wednesday and then the subsequent article in the Washington Post on thursday. Host our guest is eliana johnson, she works for National Review washington in washington, d. C. She is a graduate of yale university. Again, her career working for the new york sun was a researcher for Fox News Channel with sean hannity. What was that like, by the way . John i had a great experience with fox but very happy to be working in print and doing reporting now. Host is with National Review. Lets go to katherine from montgomery, alabama. Democrats line. Ood morning. John good morning. My question is donald trump is saying that hes going to bring hes going to bring thousands of jobs back to the United States. He intend to cancel all his companies that he has in the other countries and bring back all those jobs back to the United States . Host katherine, thank you. Guest you know, this is something theres been lots and lots of newspaper articles about this but he hasnt been pressed about this. The public case that donald trump makes is that hes going to enact better trade deals that are going to force companies to bring jobs back to the United States, manufacturing jobs that have been lost and it really is true that because of the changing economy, lots of people particularly in the midwest, in the rust belt have lost jobs. Its also true that we see in lots of Donald Trumps companies, he is hiring Foreign Workers because of the way ation system and the that is who are simply cheaper. And its interesting to see him say. He admitted he has exploit the system and hes pointed the fact that the system is broken and he has profited the system exploiting it and stirring the laws. And so i think thats something that has been covered in what the public case he makes is that he will close those loopholes and presumably, that he will start following the laws and not benefit from them if he becomes president. Host let me ask you about piece by john tan easley. Its Available Online and the polls darken for the democrats to go back to our earlier discussion about the national polls. About a month ago, Hillary Clinton was leading about 7. 6 . Now she is down to a meager 1. 8 . She is ahead in pennsylvania but behind in New Hampshire, ohio and florida. And my question is getting beyond the shift in the polls are there issues that are driving this as well and how important it is to see the President Campaign on behalf of Hillary Clinton . Will that help her down the road . John you know there are two issues or incidence that i think happens that tightens the poll. The first was the comment that mrs. Clinton made about the deplorables that half of Donald Trumps voters are racists, bigots of some types and i think that was what initiated the tightening of the posms people compared it to mitt romneys 47, comment which was one of the turning points in the 2012 campaign. The other was her campaigns misleading statements about her health and that arresting video of her collapsing or almost collapsing to the arms of her aides and going into the van. Not only did it hurt mrs. Clinton but it helped donald trump who had been stowing speculation that she lacked stamina and that her health was in question. Nd it was one of these sort of conspiracytorial statements that he made and he turned out to be right and it sort of brought something that seemed like a fringe Conspiracy Theory into the mainstream. And people started to begin to think. Maybe this is not a fringed Conspiracy Theory after all. And those two things combined initiated this tightening of the polls and we saw a state of headlines last week about how donald trump does have a pass to victory in this selection. Host for eliana johnson, michael is next, chicago, independent line. Good morning. How are you . John im good. John im less interested in the conversation of chasing Donald Trumps stories and whatnot and in his army of lies and im more interested in what you think that what it is that is causing so many of my friends who i know to be intellectual, Smart Business owning men and women to look past this, this childlike behavior. Host thank you, michael. Ell get a response. John sure. While there are many, many people on the right who have labeled themself never trump perse, theres another faction who widely acknowledged his flaws and are beginning to label hemselves never hillary. Whatever trumps flaws, theyre going to vote for him anyway. Host regardless of who wins, but this congress and the Previous Congress really getting polarizing. Will anything change dealing with the debt infrastructure and americas military, longterm Spending Plans in the next congress . Caller thats a great question. Guest thats a great question and it will be interesting to see what happens in the house and the election and the way paul ryan either to donald trump or to Hillary Clinton. Its likely that republicans margin, the majority will decrease but there will be a larger conservative faction in that majority. And i think that will be really interesting. Paul ryan, i could see him working with somebody like Hillary Clinton. Much more unpredictable to see how if republicans keep the Senate Majority and the how majority and to see if they would work with donald trump. But it is, you know, i could see something getting done under a Clinton Presidency. I think Hillary Clinton is more political and more pragmatic than barack obama and certainly i could see some things getting accomplished. Host if the speaker is dealing with Hillary Clinton, hes talking about a potential candidate in 2020. Does that impact how he will deal with Hillary Clinton and realizing any compromise could hurt him in three or four years . Guest i think that would impact it. One of the big question is what does paul ryan do on Immigration Reform with the president Hillary Clinton . Hes laid out her plans for ill leading children and their parents and paul ryan is one of the most vocal advocates for Immigration Reform he said he would not make that push when he became speaker that he would that make that push under an obama presidency. It remains to be seen what would happen in the Clinton Presidency and i think thats one of the biggest question marks Going Forward. What will he do . Obviously, different case entirely if the democrats take the Senate Majority. Is the key by our guest available on National Review online. Caller we have some very Serious Problems in the far east. Isis is contained and i think it will be stayed contained as long as we keep the but korea, they have nuclear weapons. The only problem that they have now is their submarines are old and theyre diesel powered and theyre limited on how far they can go. But within the next couple of years, they will have probably the range of our fuke subs have or close to it. And that puts the coast of jeopardy. In this guy is crazy. And talking listening to donald trump, he says he knows more than his generals. Now thats absolutely frightening. At least for me, ive got a family and i surely am concerned as a democrat with this type of statement from him. If he were obtain position and no one seems to rein in or at least have diplomatic contact with north korea. Theyre letting this loony bin just trail on down the road building his nukes and building his weaponry. Host pat, thank you for the call from arizona. Guest you know republicans have been at the Foreign Policy of the Obama Administration particularly the iran deal but one of the things that im surprised hasnt been discussed much is individually every Foreign Policy expert in the republican conservative establishment had signed on to one letter or another saying they will not work in the trump administration. And he really seems to have hollowed out all of the conservative foreign policies that was meant which i really think is concerning for what happens in the event of a Trump Victory. And so i do think its a valid cause for concern. Under a Clinton Presidency, i think shes indicated that and her record demonstrates that she is more hawkish, boorish than president obama. She agrees with him on disagrees with him on most of the Foreign Policy issues but im surprised on there hasnt been a discussion on who staffs the agency. Host the village is one of those muststop location in florida. This is the daily sunny, the newspaper for that daily sun, newspaper for that presidency. Government mike pence talked about National Security, including the villagers to spread the word about the campaign. Donald trump will be in fort myers, florida, tomorrow. And the headline from the daily sun, a small strategy is paying off. Right now, donald trump moving ahead of Hillary Clinton in the sunshine state. Guest yeah, florida is really an amazing case. State president obama won twice. Hillary clinton has 60 offices. And donald trump, barely a campaign and hes leading really demonstrates some of Hillary Clintons fundamental weaknesses. The fact that she had an enormous ground game there. He has virtually nothing. I think a campaign is a generous term for it. And hes leading her in that state. Its really astonishing. And if i were her campaign, i would be in panic mode over the state of florida. Host lets go to mike from kentucky. Good morning. Welcome to the program. Republican line. Caller hi. Host good morning. Caller good morning. My question is why is the theyre so worried about the president thats leading office and where he was born and then why are we not more concerned bout the infrastructure, you know, like in flynn and all the pipes get rusted and everything because they had the wrong type of pipes on the ground. Why cant we keen them out and build them a new city and get over with all as the problems . Host do you think the candidates are talking about the issues and the media not reporting about it or do you think the media are focusing more on the birther issue or taxes or release the tax forms or Health Records . Caller well number one, i believe that the media, its like trump says, theyre all against him. They bring up stuff that they ont need to be talking about. Just trying to frustrate the American People. But i believe the most important question is that while our infrastructure. We need to have our infrastructure of our whole country, roads and everything repaired which are going to create major jobs for everybody in the United States. Host thanks for the call. This is an issue that newly elected barack obama talked about in 2008 and 2009. It essentially went nowhere in a republicancontrolled by republicans in the house and senate even though the democrats had control of the house and senate in the first two years. Guest we saw obama in the first two years when he had a super majority, really used his Political Capital to get the Health Care Bill passed. And its interesting to see now, i think, a lot of frustration from the president about also not having done anything on gun control. Thats something he also decided not to use his Political Capital in those two years to do, but absolutely could have gotten in that time frame. But i think mikes question about why are we talking about birtherism and not about infrastructure does speak to the fact that this has been a relatively you know, in an election that hasnt really been focused on policy. Its been focused on the personalities Hillary Clinton has been hit a lot. People have started to say to her youve got to make a positive case on why you want to help. Host this is a tweet from adriana saying if trump is elected, would that be a mandate guest can you repeat the question . If the republicans retain the house and senate would that be a mandate . Many of these guys are distancing themselves. It is hard to stay that theres any connection between Republicans Holding the senate and a Trump Victory at the president ial level. I think it would be more of a rejection of Hillary Clinton then a mandate of donald trump. The other consequential senate race. He says the following. Theres really no happy ending for republicans in 2016. If trump wednesday, the parties rapture with its past is complete and ever verbal. If he loses narrowly, they will be in or g of intramural recriminations. If trump loses emphatically, democrats will probably take the senate. Thats exactly right which is why it would be very republicans argue winning the senate and the presidency would be a mandate. Host lets go to luis from indiana. Caller good morning. Aboutd like to know more Donald Trumps background. What college he graduated from, when did he start his business. I do have some clips from donald trump from the 80s and 1990s. Also when he had something to do with the olympics. With history. Up i would just like to know more about what college did he fathered from and his left them this 1 million and when he filed bankruptcy how many times, where did he cash his money . Graduate from the Wharton School of business in pennsylvania. The front page of the new york ,imes looking at his tax breaks getting about 885 million in tax breaks. Guest fascinating background combines many ask specs of being an insider and a real outsider. Raised in queens. Inherited and never really been someone accepted. Finding himself rejected by those people and i think he is someone that has always wanted to be accepted all throughout. Is life i think you can really see a lot of that play out on the campaign trail. Hillarys vision for her presidency to your point is trump about keeping out and keeping the status quo in power. Guest something ive thought about it is one candidates have ,igh disApproval Ratings neither one was a charismatic candidate. Those tend to be very negative. Bush did that with the Willie Horton ad. Weve seen is a competitive and nasty race. Host this is from carol. The world tome for change. Anyt i dont think theres disagreement among republicans that thege w. Bush Republican Party needs to change. The argument is over how should it change . Should it embrace Immigration Reform . So, i think those are the arguments weve been having but will really come to the forefront after the november election. That is all going to play out after the november race. All our friend jim has this to eat. Our friend jim has this to say. Will the tax breaks of fact trump . I think it is hard to him like the everyday guy. Think it is between himself and the way he has positioned himself and the way he has lived his life. Jay, youre next. Atlanta, georgia independent line. I dont believe in polls whatsoever. The media has one of the most dangerous elements. Trumpin thing is donald has a lot of mafia ties. Why dont yall talk about some of this ties with the mafia . That oneres a story on the Washington Post. Guest i think theres been quite a lot of coverage throughout trumps ties to the mafia and theres a tremendous amount to cover. I think its interesting that so many of these calls have been much ofto donald trump criticism entities thate are supposed to be charitable propre actually there to up the people on top. Ronald from philadelphia. Good morning. Itler in the first place sounds like donald trump and the reality show is going to be white house. Says i have the answer to isis, but i will not untilt to you until you im president. I exported illegal workers. This is the craziest stuff i have seen in my entire life. As a republican, who will you vote for . I dont have anything about enron, weapons of mass is destruction. Theyve got benghazi. These people will get my family killed. Ronald is ank pretty good example of the average voter. You had the caller before who said where are the republicans who are not willing to speak out against donald trump. Jody says she has no doubt that donald trump hasnt paid taxes because of loopholes. Theres a story in the New York Times about how hes orut how he pays very little does not pay taxes at all. , good morning. H caller i had a question about the newsweek article. About ourar much talk media. Maybe you could shed some light on it. Guest im not familiar with the newsweek article. The clinton does involve charity, both have, under a lot of. Crutiny guest the Washington Post has e good work on the clinton im not quite sure to which extent that will resonate with voters. There are so many other issues. Willlinton foundation resonate with voters i think. The issue there was not about charity, but about using something to essentially influence her actions when she was secretary of state. Want we will go to everett from kentucky. Caller good morning. My question would be the reason why i think the election is so close and it hasnt been discussed is the fact that the libertarian and Green Party Candidates are taking a lot of the Bernie Sanders voters and i think the discussion needs of the why does trump trump is winning use he has a guest i think one of the reasons that trump has done better in the polls is that trump actually has solidified the republican vote. In past months, they were 83 of at about republicans were voting for him. Up in the has inched past month and now trump is getting about 93 of the romney vote. The thirdparty candidates hurt Hillary Clinton. Clinton has not done as good a as trumpng democrats has uniting republicans. Does he have any political following in the election . Could he sway a certain sector of the republican vote . Guest i think in the state of utah he could. We see mormons have a strong group identity. Romney certainly does carry influence. Work Available Online at National Review. Com. Thank you for being with us. Guest thanks so much. What would be your first question for the candidates and the debate . Debates . What would be your first question . The last half hour are going to but back and here from you coniston out with a new book called man of the world. But first, we travel to grand rapids michigan. A newly renovated Ford Library Museum where we learn about the president heres a preview. Gerald ford grew up in grand inids, but he wasnt born grand rapids. He was born in nebraska. His mother married a businessman omaha. All and iny had a child in july 1913. Hes the person we know as gerald ford. We featured isgs the baby book, keeping a recording of the babies first outings. It occurred to weeks after his birth. That was when dorothy king was fleeing leslie lynch king. Began really on the wedding day through the throughn and extended pregnancy. Oon as she puts him on a train and take some to chicago. Dorothy brock junior to grand rapids because her parents were developing real estate. She met a paint salesman by the name of gerald ford. Married. They got host you can watch the full. Our on our website to ran rapids, michigan and among the stops, museum. Ld fords want to welcome joe coniston and his latest book, man of the world. When billbegin clinton is no longer the. Resident of the United States you write guest its true. Thats what happened. The press was facing him about theh rich and overtime outrage over the pardons became so powerful it drove his Approval Rating down 20 points and his speeches that were scheduled were being canceled. Ne by one the head of the company apologize. Others other source came out,. Ome of which were false the looting and the band was him of the white house was proven to be wrong. Ofn, there was the issue office space he was going to rent and meant town manhattan and eventually they thought better of that and decided it was something of which they are to retreat. A lot of negative commentary not just from the right, from the center and even democrats there was quite a bit of anger and dismay over that time. The things he read morning, that on the they go to a local diner. What happened . Chelsea was there, hillary was there. They were all in the house and clinton said that go get coffee. So, quentin and doug band got the the suburban with secret service and went into the deli. Told him to clear some of the security. He got a very nice greeting at the deli, but when he came out, the press was waiting and that went on all day. He had nobody. He did not have the apparatus. Xcept the secret service in terms of the press, there was no protection. Clinton had nothing. Heres my question. Martin rich into damage his presidency . Guest i think it had very media to do with what the coverage at the time suggested. All of the coverage without exception played to the theme that this was a quick quid partyo to the democratic and the clinton campaigns and the years pass. Somehow the theory was if you could press the timeline enough, she had given the money. At thes really happening time was that clinton was involved in middle east peace negotiations. It was about as close as we have come to an agreement. The reason was when i that marcd him was rich had been an asset of mossad for many years. He had done all kind of work for Israeli Intelligence and some for the u. S. Back then, there were hundreds of jewish families. For what he got in trouble with israel made him useful to the u. S. Subjectid it is another , but he was able to operate in those countries and get officials to use the other way when he was taking jewish citizens out. In the eyes of the israeli government, he was what they would call a helper. He was someone who helped them a lot. I think clinton felt he owed him for the stride they make towards peace. They went to egypt to try to continue to negotiate and i think clinton felt it was important to do this after what he did for him. The problem that arose was that clinton did not feel free to talk about this publicly. That some to the fact people in israel one of this to happen but would not talk about this specifically. The incoming on it. Host why did you write the book . Guest in 2005, i was assigned a profile of clinton for esquire magazine. That summer, i went to africa with him. I have not been paying a lot of attention to the foundation and what they had been doing. I went over with him and some people, toward several countries. Nd saw what they were doing i thought this was interesting. It was the bestselling story for esquire that year. Over the next couple of years, i was following what he was continuing to do. I realize theres a book with this. Host this is a quote from your book. Confirmatione hearing for Hillary Clinton become secretary of state, he said the following. Means to gain favor with the secretary of state, even wellintentioned for donations kerry the risk for u. S. Foreign policy. Guest i do not know if there was a risk, but senator lugar was certainly correct that there was going to be a risk for perception, particularly given the way that it was covered by the media. Most of the foreign donations, the great full cook them came long before she was even considered becoming secretary of state. Alliesonations from u. S. Like norway, canada, sweden, United Kingdom how more focused becauseons aid work the Prime Ministers of those 2002, 2003 said, were going to try and provide this treatment even though the wall decided it was too expensive and we are going to let all these people die. Aboutd, im going to the what to do this, but i need money to do it, and these Prime Ministers who knew him, tony blair and others, their norwegian Prime Minister said, go ahead, and they provided tens and eventually hundreds of millions of dollars. Where they trying to influence Hillary Clinton in advance . I do not think so. Knowing your she would be secretary of state, so that is a great bulk of the money that came between 2001 and 2009. The other thing about this issue is people can be upset with Hillary Clinton, but as i explain in the book, she did not want to be secretary of state. Barack obama had to press are hard to be secretary of state. Have been dropped statement she put out that she was working on that basically declined the office. Host because they could not reach each other, it was delayed. Guest and then he persuaded her and she felt, as most americans do in the president asks you to do something, you say yes, what she said to him, whatever going to do but my husbands foundation . There are hundreds of peoples who depend on the work he is doing. What will we do about them . It was obamas team who came up with the parameters around the foundation and they have a memorandum of understanding about how that will work. 90 of the well over time, they lived up to that memorandum. And they did not, they corrected it. , you wouldunhappy have to address the president because it was he who set up the conditions in which they operate. Host we will get to caller the the callers in the moment. Our guest is joe conason, out with a new book on the clintons. Caller, theyy point out over 200 million and Clinton Foundation donors brought in 205 invitations to white house state dinners. They goes up because to the earlier point about how this is covered from the media from all sides. Guest i have this i dont put a lot of credibility into the daily caller. I think their motives are clear. And ire who they are would say would want a more independent evaluation of any statement they come up with with the Clinton Foundation or anything else. And a lot of the media coverage, great weight is given to whether someone is invited to the state a millionthe could be reasons why anyone who happened to be a Clinton Foundation donor could be invited. Maybe they knew that for 20 years, supported something us the clintons did, i mean, i would be shocked if there was a list of quick quote pros for people who gave, but why are they not more interested in what the actual work of the foundation is . You asked why decided to write the book and it was because i thought they were really doing. It is stunning to me how little interest there is in the fact else, theyeverything have saved millions of peoples , the caribbean and asia, who otherwise are going to be left to die. They made a big contribution to stemming this, if not ending the aids pandemic, which was set to kill 100 laypeople. Set toproject of kill 100 people. Host project of president bush. Guest yes, and i discussed this in the book, interesting story. When people do believe and i believe that it was one of president bushs greatest accomplishments. President clinton played a big role in that. You can ask independent experts. They will tell you. Why are we not at least as interested in that as we are in fairly trivial stuff about the foundation and email and well, she talked to the crown prince today, well, no, maybe it will be tomorrow . What difference does that make . I do not know, but sitting this peoples lives made a huge difference in not just the future of africa but the world. Host the further endeavors of bill clinton, the subtitle for joe conasons look. Good morning on the line. Caller good morning. Happy you are taking my call. I have a question. I have been listening to everything you say. It is very substantive. I believe every time hillary , sheon waiting on anything is right substantive and you can see that she has a plan and understands and it is well thought out. On the other hand, the candidate trump, other side, donald i think he is probably one of the worst campaigns that he is running in my lifetime. Im not that old, but i think he is kind of running his Campaign Like the capitalist style, any any news is good news, and it is working for a Certain Group of folks in this country. I do not think that he is really running to them. I think hillary is lucky to have as the candidate on the other side. I think he is running mainly to run his business interests and cash in at the end of this, even by losing because i do not think he is going to make enough money as president. He wants to start his own tv network and to connect with his and maybe withk russian tv, too. Host thanks. We will get a response. Well, the latter part of it interested me, where he said he is running to enhance his business. We saw that in washington the other day when he learned reporters into his new hotel, which was opening, and then did not hold an actual press conference about the birther issue, so there is something to that. I have known donald trump for years. I do not try to psychoanalyze him. It is too hard. Host our guest is currently the editor in chief of the national memo. He has written a number of books. I have been on the the New York Times best sellers list. Jamie on the republican line. Caller good morning. This guest isthat completely biased. He sounds like [indiscernible] for the clinton and says, look what the foundation has done. Of course, that is the foundation and their job. It is the job to be done anyway. I do not believe he is being objective and i believe he is peddling for the clintons because he travels with bill to africa, i mean, hello . Littlethere are situations about the Banking Company and they did not enrich themselves . Of course they did. It is about the lawyers and of course it would not be a paper trail, they know what they are doing. It is obvious and people see that. I dont know what he thinks people are thinking and talking about in america, but that is what we are talking about. Host thank you. Guest she alluded to issues raised in an earlier book called clinton cash, about the foundation with the Ericsson Telephone company and your ramie dealeal and uranium that involved some company in russia. Host you say in your book, most of the most damming materials turned out to be either factually inaccurate, melodramatically it exaggerated or revoked within weeks of publication, major Media Outlets reported significant errors discovered in its pages. Guest no doubt about that. There is no substance to them at all. We could go into detail if someone wanted to, but with the uranium deal, for instance, the linchpin of that accusation against him the clinton is that money was funneled to the foundation because she was going cast a vote and approved the uranium deal as secretary of state. The truth was that deal had to be approved by something called committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which most people do not know anything about, a major cabinet subcommittee, basically, that business deals that might affect National Security. It is chaired, not by the secretary of state, but by the Treasury Department control by the Treasury Department and the pentagon, not the state department. The state department has one vote on that committee. It could not have controlled him of the tilde done anything to stop this deal, which was approved again by this and committee after she was no longer secretary of state. The idea that millions of dollars were funneled into get one vote on that committee is ridiculous, and anyone who knows how that functions, that. That story was blown out of the water. Right. Ler is people talk about what they want and leave what they want. As far as my bias, yes, i saw what the president was doing. What president clinton was doing. I was interested in it. If that makes me bias, i plead guilty to do have read the book, steve, theres plenty of criticism of the clintons in the book. Host lets go to joanne in maryland on the democrat line. Good morning. Caller good morning. George stephanopoulos wrote a book years ago after the clintons left the white house, and there was a line in there i thought was interesting. I was going to ask if you agree with the assessment. He said that bill clinton is hard as nails on the sorry, soft as jello on the outside and hard as nails on the inside and secretary clinton is the opposite, that she is hard as nails on the outside and soft as joe on the inside. Do you agree with that assessment . Guest i read georges book called all too human, and it was very interesting. Clinton is a compassionate person and i think Hillary Clinton is, too. I think like any other human being, they have their hard and soft moments. You can see both. If you spend any time around them. I will claye the perception of Hillary Clinton is somebody you steely and calculating all the time is certainly wrong, based on not just what i know about her but what other people who have known her for many years much better than i have have told me about her. People from arkansas will tell me how many times she called to find out about the sick Family Member or what was happening with their child in school who is having trouble. This is somebody who you can find scores of people in arkansas and new york to tell you how much she displayed compassion for their problems. Host lets go to morgantown, west virginia. Good morning, independent line. Caller thanks for taking my call. Good morning. I wanted to begin with joe conason analysis joe conason salysis joe conason analysis of the server and everything surrounding that. Guest within the last month or so, a line or two from my book generated a lot of news coverage, which is that i mentioned in the book that colin powell had advised her to use her personal email and i was the first to reveal that, i think. As he had done. That led to a story in the New York Times, and they may chose it, good covers Hillary Clinton, helped establish the facts of that story and then it blew up. Colonel powell or said he did not remember this and then it turned out that the, indeed, dated five chilly clinton to use personal email, as he had done. Did advise Hillary Clinton to use personal email, as he had done. As general powell did not and as coded clinton should have done better, but she has admitted it is clearthink that she feels that was an error and is not blame it on him. I will say what general powell did was that pfizer to use her personal email and create a context where she might have thought that the decision to was making anyway was ok because he was such a respected figure and a republican. No one had ever complained about the fact that he not only used rational email with then disposed of all up his emails as secretary of state. We do not have any of them. None of the emails about the decision to go to war with iraq, the aftermath of 9 11, all kinds of things we could learn had powells emails been available. I think we will never know. Unlike secretary clinton, whose decision to try to sort her emails between personal and public has been criticized, but she did turn over tens and thousands of emails from her time as secretary of state when the state department asked her to do that. Book, april 25 at this year, the host of msnbcs morning show, talking about a 2010 donation of the country of algeria and their desire to be off of the terror list, explain. Show was broadcasted around the time clinton cash came out, and im afraid my friend Joe Scarborough got excited about clinton cash. That day, he took donation that had been funneled through the Benton Foundation from algeria to haiti and the aftermath of the haitian earthquake and devastation there. And turned it into a nefarious scheme, in which the nation of algeria would be removed from the state departments terrorism list for giving money to the Clinton Foundation. 500,000, which in the scheme of things, is not big in the 2 billion operation, but there were several problems with the joe said. One, the Clinton Foundation did not hold onto that money and it went straight to haitian relief. Number two, algeria has never been on the nation terror list. Algeria is an ally of the United States and has been for many years. This theory that joe invented in his mind was completely wrong, but it represented a mindset in which you could take any donation to the foundation by any country and to leave a story around it that made it seem very nefarious when it was nothing of the kind. Host lets go to lucy, pennsylvania, republican line. Good morning. Caller good morning. I want to say anyone considering voting for hillary should actually walk the clinton cash and as far as the uranium deal, he says she was one vote. We all know that the whole Democratic Party is corrupt. You can tell that because just from what is going on, nobody will prosecute him for anything. That is all i have to say. Hard toell, that is argue when someone says the whole Democratic Party is correct. I do not know what proof you think you have of that, but i would point out that the fbi director, who decided not to prosecute Hillary Clinton over any alleged the militants, is a republican and has always been a republican. James comey, he served in previous administrations and president obama, a democrat, appointed him as fbi director i think in part because he wanted to have a republican who would oversee his administration of the countrys Law Enforcement he is seen i think and respected as a nonpartisan figure across the aisle. I would be careful with those broad allegations. Host to our cspan radio listeners, man of the world is the book and joe conason is our guest. We have another 10 to 15 minutes with them. I want a reaction to a donald trump said last month in virginia on the issue of the Clinton Foundation. Here is the republican nominee. [video clip] trump clinton has made 60 million in gross income while she was secretary of state. Ooing] plus, countless more to the phony Clinton Foundation. It is called pay for play. [booing] she even created an illegal private email server, when easily hacked by our foreign enemies, to hide her corrupt dealings. Host joe conason, your reaction when you hear donald trump said that. He has repeated the charge. Guest he will say anything. I think we know that now. I would challenge them to prove any of those allegations. I would Say Something else about donald trump since he decided to use the term paper plate he accuses people often a bit think he is doing and we now know that he illegally made a contribution to the attorney general of florida from his foundation, which, by the, is not funded with his money anyway. He used other peoples money from his foundation to make a 25,000 conservation when he believed she would investigate wasp university, which he afraid of having anyone investigate, said that looks a lot more like paper play than anything that i know of that involve the Clinton Foundation. Host lets go to john from pennsylvania. Good morning. Caller thanks for the call. Many of the callers are the kind of sure what i was inking. Im independent, used to be a republican. The parties on both sides seem pay per play and what they do today. It is scary to think that secretary of state, republican or democrat, would have secret or private emails. Why would you need those . What are you trying to conceal . I think it conceals insider trading, pay for play deals. I think both sides do it and i think it is a disingenuous for an author of a book, whether liberal, independent or conservative, to say one side is wrong or right when everybody is doing it, so my question this morning us how can you say, Going Forward, thought there, you seem to favor the clintons and the democrat side, but my question to you would be how do you see Going Forward how it would be possible to condemn president ,ump or any if they used the foundation and did the same thing with pay per play . Or one or only begets the other and why do we bother investigating when we know both sides are doing it . Guest im interested in facts. If you read my book, there are a lot of facts. I examine all the allegations. They are without merit. There is nothing like the payoff to pam bondi that occurred from the Trump Foundation that involve the Clinton Foundation, nothing remotely resembling that, so you can save both sides do it and you have read about awful things that the foundation has done, but they had done tremendous amount of good and i do not think any pay for play has been showed. One example, Judicial Watch put out a press release claiming that the crown prince had given 32 million to the Clinton Global Initiative in order to get his meeting with Hillary Clinton. The compressed time so heavily that they made it seem as if the 32 million was a payoff to her to get a meeting with her. Lots of problems with that story. One, the 32 million was not given to the Clinton Foundation. 2000 five, it was an initiative by the crown prince and american ally, to Fund College Scholarships for students in his own country. That is out cgi works. Atple do not donate money the meetings, and he did not give 32 million to the Clinton Foundation. But Judicial Watch put out a press release claiming it happened. And they then had to correct that information. The second point is Hillary Clinton would never not eat with the crowned prince. She may not have wanted to meet with them on a particular date for any reason, which i guess of in the emails, but course she would meet with the crowned prince because he is a u. S. Ally in the gulf and a critical region, so this story was fabricated out of old clock by Judicial Watch and i think a lot of innocent listeners, viewers, readers leave that kind of thing when they read it and it is false. Host 70 go to another part of the book without republicans viewed Hillary Clinton in 2016. In december 2012, when she had a concussion, republicans, stricken for fear, that she might run for president again, should not decide how to spin her illness. Where she actually farcical than the official story suggested, disabling any president ial ambition she might still harbor . For wishing merely faking . This was after testimony on the benghazi attack. Host that wasnt guest that was an interesting episode to review some other were determined to spin any news about her in light of what they feared would be her president ial campaign. Not all republicans, but leading republicans, include karl rove, cannot remember which side he was on at the moment, but he and may beat Rush Limbaugh and others argued precisely over what you said, or is she thinking was it worse . As it turned out, she was not thinking. She had been injured. It was not much worse because she testified for 11 hours before the Benghazi Committee and i think most people agree she did very well. Host lets go to robin from pennsylvania, republican line with joe conason. Good morning. Caller good morning. I just have a question. I can that believe that this has not come up more. , orary Clintons Campaign hillary, she sent it through the mail and somehow it disappeared. Do you really expect the American People to believe that . Think i am not familiar with that story, but i would point out one thing about the emails. To the extent that secretary clinton emailed with anyone in the state department or any other office of government, those emails were preserved another government servers, whether she had the government account she was using her not, so i think the idea that all of are supposedly incriminating and they had disappeared, is wrong. The one thing, we see emails that people find easy enough to spend to some kind of conspiracy, whether rightly or wrongly. I would say almost every case wrongly, but there is a lot of email material that is available for her. If she wanted to get rid of all of them like colonel powell did, she would have been able to but she did not. Host what surprised you in researching this book . Gonk about that and we will to joann from tennessee, democrat line. Good morning. Ofler good morning to both you. I was calling in to talk about. Hese emails the Clinton Foundation i am sick and tired of hearing about those emails. Said she did not do anything wrong and he is a republican, just like he said, and that Foundation Helps people. Donald trump is not doing anything to help anybody but himself, and i am sick and tired of his lies, and i am so glad cnn called to not the other day. He said he was going to make a statement about the president and his birth certificate. He was up there showing off the hotel and he put the gentleman up there with no good credentials. Our world needs to link up that this man is in there for himself. He has ties with russia, he has outsourced jobs over there, and he talks about jobs, well, why does he not make some in america . Host thanks for the call from tennessee. Guest well [laughter] i appreciate the endorsement very much. Host well go to nancy from austin, texas. Good morning. To say thest, i have woman who just called about the credentials for the people who are standing behind, a lot of them were medal of valor winners. To me, that gives you the credentials, but i dont know. Secondly, it has been mentioned quite a bit about colonel powell and his emails and when he told clinton. What he did is tell her he used his personal email account for personal stuff, family stuff guest that is not correct, maam. No, he used his personal email for the state department business. Thousands and thousands of times. A classified desktop from the state department the classified material, which is what Hillary Clinton also did for like 99. 99 of the time, so they have also found a classified email that was sent by his a well. His aol account was hacked. There is no evidence that Hillary Clintons email account was of her heart. There is evidence that people tried to do it, but nobody has released any emails hacked from her account so far. Waske general powell, whose hacked multiple times to his embarrassment. Host you say in the book bill clinton and his foundation would remain primary targets for the trump campaign, the murdoch media and the pyrites. So much had changed since the clinton said that the white house, and so little. Guest that is correct. We see a lot of the same characters. There is a man right now who was appointed deputy Campaign Manager for donald trump made david posse and he is been around since the earliest whitewater days attacking the clintons and being paid to do that. We have a different world technologically, politically, and certainly the term phenomena is something new, but in a lot of ways, we see many of the same types of politics and the same types of attacks. Host no matter what bill clinton hope to do with the rest of his life, you write in the book, he knew the controversies that haunted his presidency might never quite be put to rest, except perhaps whitewater. Guest in the book, i discuss the final report on whitewater, which came out long after he left office, and it is very clear that if you read that report, there was nothing to whitewater and it was never anything to what wonder, which goes back to a book i wrote many years ago and discussed on cspan more than once, i think, but i think he did feel finally that whitewater it is interesting now people who once disagreed family with whitewater the human league with whitewater in this town have come to a knowledge that we were right about that back in the late 1990s. Now, they were quarrel about other things, but i think we have been vindicated on that. Host one more call, grace from lafayette, indiana, good morning. Thanks for waiting. Go ahead with your question. Would like for you to answer me this if you can, i cannot believe that the leted states of America Donald trump, who worships money as his god, kindly note that he has and is the only business in handling inies, and them, i guess he does china millions, how do we know that he will trade some of the stuff he has learned to pay off his bills . Host she is talking about the National Security agency has done. Next, grace. Guest i would be watching donald trump carefully if i were in the Intelligence Committee in the United States because of the people who surround him and because of his ties and because of his stated preferences. He was Vladimir Putin and he thinks russia is great. It seems pretty ignorant. Problems with russia, our ties with the nato countries and what that means to the world, so i would keep an eye on him. He talks about his intelligence taking on tv, which he should not have done, so even if he has no malicious intent, he is not somebody who you can trust to be careful with information. Thingfinal question, one youve learned that surprised you the most in researching this book . Well, you know, the relationship between bill clinton and the first president bush, the death of that relationship, that friendship did surprise me, especially the more learned about it and how it came about. It is really interesting. I knew clinton was close to Nelson Mandela as a boy who grew up without a father and a lot have thought he looked for a father, and he had a relationship like that would Nelson Mandela, but i did not realize until i looked closely that he developed a kind of friendship with george h. W. Bush, as well, and the sensitivity of former president bush as a person was something that was also a discovery for me. Host and ironic he could see was the man that defeated president bush and ,uest as president bush said and i think he believes this, there is a stronger and special bond among people who up and president , and it transcends even political conflict. Host joe conason of the book the man at the world further endeavors of bill clinton, thank you for stopping by. Highpower, if youre moderating the upcoming debates, what is the one ourtion you have in final hour, if you are moderating the upcoming debates, what is the one question you have . 202 7488000 for democrats. 202 7488001 if you are republican. 202 7488002 for independents. If youre watching outside the United States, the number is 202 7488003. What one question to have to the candidates . Following the washington journal, our guest this week is congressman adam schiff, democrat of california. We ask about the number of issues, including the hacking of election systems in arizona and whether or not the u. S. Election system will have any threat of the not credible. Heres part of the discussion. What i think is very concerning here is that these activities go beyond simply foreign simply gaining intelligence, and i can only discuss the public reports if the public reports from two states are accurate and they have been alerted by the federal government of that Foreign Government that may be hacking into the databases. That is not for the purpose of foreign intelligence gathering. Riley to hack a database of registered voters that is something voters . That is something you do if you lay the foundation or disrupt the election. I think it is very important to make sure that we are prepared and write every state ought to have a paper trail and many of us have been urging that for years. My former colleague was a strong champion of that and some states do not have that in all cases, but they ought to be taking every precaution. They notice now that they need to make sure they are well guarded. Have a quick follow on that. Do you think we will hear of any other states that have been breached, besides illinois and arizona . I cannot comment on anything that i have gone through the committee, but i can say that i do not think, if these public reports are accurate, there is any reason to believe the states are unique. I would imagine that it a foreign entity was hacking into two states, they would have an interest in more than those two, it stands to reason that copy every state ought to take precautions and the most at risk are any systems that are plugged into the internet, but even beyond that, states that allow electronic voting of members of military overseas for communicate Election Results where youally or could end up tampering with Voter Registration database, for people to go to vote, theres no record of them or they have the contest it. Anything that would call into question the legitimacy of the election would be highly disruptive. Newsmakers us on at the top of the hour, on this meant adam schiff, the Ranking Member of the Intelligence Committee. He will talk about elections, National Security and if there is parking for edward snowden. Newsmakers every sunday at 10 00 on cspan and cspan radio. Trump was onnald cnbc, talking about the economy, jobs, the election, and the issue of the debates cannot. Here is a portion [video clip] here is a portion. [video clip] inald trump everybody except the socalled forum, and they also that i won and matt lauer was easy on me. I wasnt. I thought he was very professional and has been treated and professionally, but they also that i won. They are gaming the system, said that when i go into the debate, i am going to be treated very unfairly by the moderators, so i can see that this is no different than the great bobby knight, who i am a big then and that meant a lot in indiana because i won in a landslide after getting Bobby Knights support, but at the end of the game, they were sort of subconscious and gave him the it. , and he was a master at well, they are doing the same thing. They say how matt lauer was nice, he was not nice, he was tough and i answered him better than she did. The fact is they are gaming the system, and i think maybe we moderator, let hillary and i accept their and debate because i think the system is being raped, so i think it will be an unfair debate. I can see it happening right now , so i think rigged it will be an unfair debate. Forink it will be hard trump to show the establishment of what he can do and i think it is very unfair what they are doing, so i think we should have a debate with no moderator, just hillary and i talking. Host donald trump this past week in reference to the format lower moderated. And the new york close confirming that note your pieces work for the moderator and matt lauer did have in their piece between Hillary Clinton and donald trump. You are a potential moderator and i want to put out that only to you as a potential question for the candidates, but for all of america, i ask this question of two people who i knew, and it was doing the financial meltdown, and i asked one person the day before and i asked and their answers were astonishing. The question was, if you came to the shoreline and on one hand had 100 dollars and there was a packed to democracy and in the other hand, 100000 and that was the past to totalitarianism, which would you choose and why . The person who had lost her job living large and driving big hesitation, thout 100, because she valued opportunity. The other person said astonishingly, 100,000 and came back two days later and told me [indiscernible] this is where we are today. Start that question on cspan in the morning. Excuse me, my voice is going why people are saying what they are saying and you will see that we are at this time looking at trump, who once totalitarianism and we have to find out what the other answer will be from Hillary Clinton, as well as the people of america. We all do what you did with your server. This was a home router server. Why would you think thats a smart thing to do and why would you continue lying about it. My question for donald trump would be what you going to do to be transparent so the citizenry controls the government instead of the other way around . To get guns out of the hands of dangerous people, to fight for criminal justice that delivers justice. Kids havere that all good schools and good teachers, no matter what zip code they live in. [applause] when you really think about this, the choice this november is about so much more than democrats and republicans. As Michelle Obama said at the democratic convention, its about who will have the power to shape our children of the next war years of their lives. Its also about the kind of country we want to be, what we want to leave behind for future generations. Clintonat was hillary last night.
