The board writing, over the weekend his gop rivals and candidates for the democratic nomination all condemned the mayhem that has broken out in and around trump rallies. Although protesters have a responsibility to avoid violence and let trump to be heard at his own rallies it is the candidates to set a tone from the top instead his rhetoric has inflamed fans and opponents alike. This morning, we want to hear from you. Want to hear your calls. The Editorial Board noting those running against donald trump spent yesterday talking about this on the sunday shows. Ted cruz on meet the press talking but the donald trump rallies. [video clip] the protesters have no right to engage in violence. No right to threaten violence. These protesters, whether it is black lives matters or Bernie Sanders protesters coming in trying to shout down any speaker, that is not free speech. First amendment gives your right to speak but it does not give you a right to silence others. The protesters are behaving abusively. At the end of the day in any campaign responsibility starts at the top and it is not beneficial when you have a president ial candidate like donald trump telling supporters punch that guy in the face. What would you advise donald trump to do . This is reflecting on the party as a whole or it could considering he is the front runner. I think every candidate ought to aspire toward decency. Bringing us together. I dont think we should be using hateful rhetoric. I dont think we should be cursing at people. I have been troubled by the where heonald holds asks all the people to raise their hand and pledged support to him. This is america. We dont pledged allegiance to a man. Host ted cruz yesterday on meet the press. We are asking viewers what your experience has been like at a trump rally. One example from facebook. Matthew wrote and that i went to one in kansas city. Everyone who was there to see trump seemed to have a good time as well. Lots of protesters in the audience but they would get called out and escorted out. As soon as trump said he would prosecutors the protesters and called on them to be arrested there was maybe one more after that. The rally was high energy. People cared about our country, democracy, and what it means to be an american. Protesters heckling Trump Supporters as they left the venue. Fun to get into conversations and arguments with them. Would rally again is what matthew writes. Above that samuel writes, i was told to go back to mexico because i was illegal. I went because i had to see this crowd for myself. I informed the got was active duty military and shut him up and he stood by his statement. Two comments, two experiences of those who have attended trump events on our facebook page. You can join the conversation. Sandra, good morning. Caller i have not got to go to one yet. As of the other day i will make it to one. I am still so angry at the way people are doing donald trump. Him and doescusing not seem like they want to go with what the people want. I would not have blamed him one bit. Those people were acting like idiots. I am a republican. Voting republican a long time but if they make us vote like for mccain or romney, i will vote democrat next time. We want what we want. Host you said you are going to a donald trump event, have you ever been to an event for a poll political cycle before . Caller no. I usually picked the one i want. They have done him horrible. Host is that why you are attending one this time around . Making the effort to go to a rally this time . Caller that is exactly right. I will try my best to go to the one closest to me. I am tired of the way they are doing him. Cruz has made me so ashamed of him. Let the people decide who they want. If they lose to hillary, fine. Let it be what we want. Host we showed ted cruz on meet the press over the weekend. Many of the candidates on sunday shows this being the topic of conversation after that rally was canceled on friday after arrests on saturday outside a trump event. This story continuing through the beginning of this week heading into that important tuesday primary day. Five primaries happening including winner take all states of florida and ohio for republicans. Riemer is happening in North Carolina and missouri primaries happening in North Carolina, missouri and illinois. What was your experience like . Is your experience like what has been shown on the television . Robert is calling in from waldorf, maryland. Good morning. Caller good morning. This thing is manufactured by the media and Republican Party. For the media to sit back and accuse donald trump of all of this vitriol and violence is nonsense. For the last seven years for sure anybody who disagreed with barack obama was a racist. Barack obama sat in a racist church for 20 years listening to a preacher preach against the white man, the jew, america. How bad america is and death to america. The media never said anything about that. Barack obama preaching against how the police are bad. And you wonder why this tension is so high. Host robert, what event did you attend . Caller the first one that gets within reach of me i will be there. That lady from alabama just said the truth. The more you guys talk, the more you guarantee trump. That is what is drawing me to him. The media is so crooked. You lie. This man is a great man. He is a great man. He wants to make this country great again like he says. You guys in the media, you soft liberals cannot handle the truth. You guys have turned people against one another. You guys are the ones doing all this stuff. Host all right, robert. We have a line for Trump Supporters. 202 7488000. If you want to talk about what you intended what you experienced at an event. 202 7488001. For members of the media if you want to talk about your experiences 202 7488002. For protesters it is 202 7488001. Keep calling in. We want to hear your stories. A few stories on Donald Trumps response to some of this criticism that happened over the weekend. The front page of the washington times. Trump promising to send sanders some protesters. Donald trump blames Bernie Sanders on sunday for inciting protests at his rallies. Without to send his own porters to sanders event vals to send his own supporters to sanders events. Incident where a supporter was hit as he was being led out of the rally by police. Hit by one of those members who attended a trump event. Heres the exchange on meet the press yesterday. [video clip] i am not aware. I want to see what that young man was doing because he was very taunting. Very disruptive and from what i understand he was sticking a certain finger up in the air and that is a terrible thing to do in front of somebody that wants to see america made great again so we will see. And that condones a sucker punch . As i told you before, nothing condones but i want to see. The man got carried away. 78 years old. He loves this country and maybe he does not like seeing what is happening. So you do not condone violence . I dont. Well im going to look at it. It was a strange event. From what i heard there was a lot of taunting and a certain finger was placed in the air. I dont condone the violence or what he did. You coulds possible help him with legal fees if this man needs it . I have inched up to my people to look into it, yes. Host we want to hear your experiences at a donald trump rally with them getting such attention in the media. What you have seen through your own eyes. Viennain new jersey is in new jersey. Caller good morning. What is happening with the racism and everything, trump is not a racist. Mediall started from the and the other people that are campaigning. The fact that they twisted trumps words from the beginning. Twisted his words all around. Now they got him as a racist. I want to say that those people at the rally that were disruptive, they are terrorists. They are terrorizing the freedom of speech. They should be dealt with like terrorists. Host we will go on to kathleen who is been to a trump event from dayton, ohio. Good morning. Caller i am a sander supporter however i am really interested when i go to these rallies which i have done for years. I am very interested in how people are thinking. I did have a ticket inside but i stayed outside and talk to people in the lines. Host where was this rally . Caller dayton, ohio. I forget the name of the convention center. People were orderly. Contractor. A a lot of bluecollar workers. I held a sign that said hes listen, and respect. As i talked to people on the line and i stood at this one guys jeep. He had a trump sign. He was a former contractor and he had been squeezed out by people hiring Illegal Immigrants. A civil conversation as well as with other folks it was interesting that bridge between what those two guys, trump does not talk about much, but just about how the American Worker has been squeezed. Dayton was a manufacturing town with lots of bluecollar union jobs that left the country. We talked about how both parties as my teamster world war ii that are in veteran dad used with ii also stood talked to two of the anonymous people standing at the corner and they were iraq war vets. They were not going to vote. They were very upset about how they were sent to iraq based on lies. I asked one young man why they were not going to vote. So why go to these events . Is this something you enjoy doing to engage people on this . D go to trouble events more do you go to trump of vents more . Caller not at all. So i amn colorado park taking care grandkids so i went to two sanders event in colorado. I go interested in because i want to see who is there. I want to see what people think. I engage in conversation. There is a bridge between some of these issues. If you stand and talk with people they will talk about wages, loss of jobs. The woman i stood next to, a pakistan, she had a sign that said islam is not a hate filled religion or Something Like that and im telling her i hate to say it, there were quite a few people who walked past her with stink eye, looking at her with mean looks. Racism there is some being fueled by trump but host have you ever seen Trump Supporters at a sanders event . Trump has said he may start sanderssupporters to events because he plays Bernie Sanders for some of the disruptions that happened. Caller that is absurd. I cannot tell you that i talked to any. I walked up and down the line at the sanders event in denver. There are a lot of young people but there are people my age. I am 63. Bernie possible values are reflective of mine. Bernies values are reflective of mine. I do not go there to stir anything up. I have gone to republican events before. I went to mccain, the sarah palin event in dayton. During the debate last night, Hillary Clinton said Foreign Policy should be brought up more , and indeed it should. And her war record because no one really talks about her role as secretary of state in fomenting the situation in syria and libya and that those refugees, hundreds of thousands of refugees, are part of her policies. Us to encourage all of talk to one another. We can find out we do have similar thinking on similar issues especially on jobs and how will parties sold the American Worker down the pipe. Host want to hear from folks who have been to trump events. This is your chance to call in and talk about what you have seen through your eyes. Hobby in maryland bobby in maryland. Bobby is not there. We will go to antonio. Trump supporter. Caller good morning everybody. Trump 100 . Nald the problem is the media. The media sometimes does the job, sometimes not. It should be responsible. What they say. Mr. Trump tries to fix this country and he is the only one can do this job. Because he is good guy. Host have you been to a trump event . Caller people like rubio or cruz, they work already for the government for so many years. Is turn for change. The country would be much better. Host antonio in boston, massachusetts. We have a line for Trump Supporters, protesters, and members of the media. What have you seen for your own eyes . Have you been to other president ial Campaign Events in previous cycles . Howard is up next on the line for protesters from ohio. Good morning. What event did you attend . Caller dayton. I was very antitrump. I was very intimidated by the tremendous security and everything else. I had no intention of saying anything. More of an observer. I tried to get into a kasich columbus. I could not get in. Host you said you are intimidated. Why go in the first place . Basically, trump, mixed feelings on the positive side. Trump is correct that ohio is a rust belt disaster. All the industry has gone out of their bank. You look at akron, youngstown. These are just wastelands and all the jobs of going to china. I was critical of his manner. Yorker. Uth, brash, new he kind of won the over. I did not like a huge security presence. I realized he needed that protection i suppose but it is overwhelming. I think he is probably being denied his freedom of speech. It is like the lesser of two evils. At this point now, kasich is a disaster for the economy of ohio. Like water gone through a sieve. I dont know what he is talking about when he says ohio has a comeback. You go to any of these former Industrial Centers of ohio, youngstown, akron, this was the industrial heartland of america. Those jobs have utterly disappeared. It is terrible. Host that ohio vote is tomorrow. Part of that big day on the primary trail, five States Holding primaries tomorrow. Wants to follow up on the issue youre talking about, the security of donald trump. This morning, in light of what happened when a protester tried to rush the stage over the weekend at a donald trump event. Here is the new york times. As mr. Trumps Campaign Events have grown more vitriolic, security presence is on edge. The shift comes months after people around mr. Trump urged him to tighten protection out of concern. The trunk campaign would not specifics but his detail and secret service are present at rallies. You can see the security presence around him. Police and perhaps private or secret service surrounding the stage as donald trump speaks. We want here from those who have been to donald trump events. This is your chance to tell us and not just so we see what is on tv, tell us what actually happened from your experience. Good morning. What event did you attend . Caller down here in florida we have had several trump rallies. They have been relatively civil. I am an avid watcher on tv. There is one thing that needs to be said about these rallies and that is, what happens at these rallies with these protesters in lyrical terrorism. Beings the Baltimore Ryan baltimore riot being given license to spill into our political process. I am disgusted with the Democratic Party doing this. This is wrecking our nation. The Democratic Party is afraid of the blackbaud. Of the black vote. They will do and say anything to destroy this country as long as they keep the black vote. , these peopleg will not take yes for an answer. If you give them everything they want, there will be Something Else they are not going to like. They want to terrorize the process i guess. Americans claim that they want a leader who is not being bought and paid for by outside interests. You have it with donald trump. American people say they want law and order but when they have somebody who wants to stick up for law and order, what do they do . I do not know what able to expect when dog whistles are being blown in their years they are not supposed to react . Mrs. Political terrorism. Terrorism. Political im disgusted with the Democratic Party. Host politico with a story yesterday about the effort to shut down the effort that eventually shut down that chicago rally. Inside the protest that stop the truck rally. That story to read it is in politico. Gabriel is waiting on the line for protesters. Which rally to do attend . Caller the ohio one. Else there for something and decided to attend the rally. It is more crazy than everybody thinks. This guy terrorizing everybody. People are getting tired of donald trump. Host you are the second third caller who is used the term terrorized. Why do you think that term is being thrown around by both sides . Caller terrorism does not necessarily mean you have to have a gun. When you get on stage and talk about knocking the crepitus knocking people are getting tired of this guy. He is moving from an entertainer to a terrorist. This is not the america people know about. America is a place when you go to a rally you should be able to express your feelings about what you think about the candidate. But when you do that, when you is takendonald trump out on a stretcher. A 78 euros got punched somebody in the face. Host what about people who come to trump rallies specifically to . Isrupt it donald trump says his freedom of speech is being infringed upon. As somebody who has gone as a protester to one of those rallies, what is your response . Caller protesting is not a violent protest until you start knocking the craft of someone. A peaceful protest. When this is not a warfront. Muslim, do not be stupid. If youre handicapped, dont be stupid. Black, dont be stupid to vote for donald trump. If youre poor uneducated, do not be stupid. The International Front is laughing at the United States. They think the United States is like rwanda what now rwanda right now. I think every city donald trump shows up at should become like chicago. It is time to stand up for your rights. You do not have to be violent. You do not have to fight with someone but when you do that he will order you out as if you are not supposed to be in that rally. It is your right to attend any rally you want. Host that is gabriel in laurel, maryland. Jim is in boca raton, florida. From supporter. Good morning trump supporter. Good caller i attended the from friendly at the trumper l. A. At the edge of the everglades. His helicoptern and the crowd was really enthusiastic. There were different people trying to push through the front. E the lady pushing through the front was hispanic and the last guy calling and was saying all that nonsense. Everyone has that right. It was a beautiful thing last night. I enjoyed it. The crowd was enthusiastic. There were some protesters, but the cost for keeping them over that way. Host do you think the reports of violence are overblown . Segmentcallers in the were saying its the media trying to further the story. Would you agree with it . Caller its way overblown. Watching the different rallies and stuff you see one or two people. Just causing some chaos i guess. That was not the case here. There was one guy Walking Around with a towel. It really was not a problem at this rally. Old, every age, there, people in wheelchairs, army retired vets, and we support trump. Host have you ever been to a Campaign Rally before for another candidate or was this your first time . Caller no, too busy serving the service for 25 years so i did not get to go to too many rallies. This was something very interesting and very enlightening. Host thanks for the call from boca raton, florid a. A few tweets on the topic from folks. Not so bad in bloomington. There were protesters, mostly peaceful. The worst supporters of chicago. Tots very enjoyable going rallies and having conversations with people. Makes you proud. Says, my older son went to a truck rally in south carolina. He said the supporters were so enthusiastic, almost like a cult. Brian is calling in from atlanta, georgia, and he was turned away from the event. Tell us your story. Caller i went to an event in atlanta and was trying to go with a couple of friends to check it out. E got turned away a staffer came up to us and was like, are you Trump Supporters . And we said no, we are undecided. And they said, no, you cannot come in. I waited in line for hours now and they said, no, you cant come in. Host why did the person come up to you . Did they have any understanding of why you were approached specifically . Theer it was obviously people look like Trump Supporters had signs and hats. Out. Re standing we were a group of college kids, so i guess we were not the typical age group. A couple of my friends were minorities, which i guess is not either part of the typical trump supporter, i guess. Host what was your groups plan once you were inside . Was there any plan to protest . Or were you there to sit and experience the event . Caller we do not have any ill intent trying to protest. We just want to hear what you have to say and see the crowds and see what it was all about. We were not trying to do anything. I think it was like going to any rally to see what he has to say and see what his people believe. Host would you try to go again . Caller no, i dont think so. I do not think i would really want to go to a rally that would turn people away. I think the point of rallies is for people to go and check out if they are undecided and see what these people have to say, meet the candidates. I think if they are being turned away, thats not how a campaign should be operated. Host that is brian in atlanta, georgia this morning cou. Five states with primaries tomorrow and we will be covering it on cspan with florida and ohio have a winner take all primaries. Illinois, missouri, and North Carolina are the other three states. Mitt romney is planning to campaign with Ohio Governor john kasich on monday. He has two stops in ohio, according to nbc news. Romney is not expected to endorse the Ohio Governor during the campaign swing, but it will be the first time that romneys ,ampaign has decided to move significance of the Republican Former nominee that recorded robo calls for john kasich and marco rubio. In florida, the latest polling showing donald trump at 43 and marco rubio at 22 with ted cruz right behind them at 21 . You can check out those polls at wall street journal. Com. Just a few other stories to show you. Abio backers look for vehicle after seeing those polling numbers for marco rubio in his home state. Marco rubio says he would get out of the race if you did not win his home state. That is a must win on tuesday. This is from the Editorial Board of the wall street journal. They write that if john kasich or marco rubio wins on tuesday, they have a right to stay in the race and should stay in the race. If they win their home states, misters rubio and kasich should fight on to the primary convention with the best chance to win in november to govern the country. If it takes an open convention, so be it. Thats what the Editorial Board of the wall street journal rights. We are getting your expenses at expenses at trump rallies. Otis, which rally did you attend and when . Tuesdayit was on super in columbus, ohio. Host are you there . Go for it, sorry. Caller it was in columbus, ohio, on super tuesday. Let me just say that i am a democrat from texas. Ive been involved in rallies and i drove over 420 miles to see this man. Im glad i did. It was quite an experience could im 64 years old. There were a lot of people my age, if you will, but i was stunned by the crosssection of the young people, stunned at the number of women that were there. People who had never voted before in their life who were in their 30s. The reason i got started in this, my own senator who ive emailed i said im tired of you guys getting elected and then treating foreigners, if you you aretter than treating us, the taxpayers of the United States. Thattired of hearing Social Security is going to dry up and going away when you send millions of money to these other countries, countries that really dont even like us. That itssponse was just not that simple. I said, no, it is that simple. You need to keep some money here in the United States. What would happen if you told all these countries, look, we need to take care of our own people here in United States . Youre only going to get half of what we sent you. We are going to make sure that Social Security is there. His response again was its just not that simple. My response was, you know what . It is just that simple. It is time to take care of americans. Host that is otis in pennsylvania. Republicans and Democratic Candidates criticizing donald trump about the tone of his rallies and campaign event. Bernie sanders speaking out along with Hillary Clinton yesterday. He was Bernie Sanders on cnns state of the union and a bit of what he had to say yesterday. [video clip] take mr. Nders if we trumps words with a grain of salt, almost Everybody Knows that this man cannot stop lying about anything. To call me a communist is a lie. To talk about our organization or our campaign disrupting his meeting is alive. Were there some people there . There were thousands of people their eyes i understand it as i understand it. Our campaign had nothing to do with disrupting his meeting. Is ank what you see, jake, man and even his republican colleagues make the point his language and intonations. About carrying people out and stretchers, when you see at his rallies people sucker punch people, this is a man who keeps implying violence and then you end up getting what you see. So i think that he, in fact, has in to tell his supporters the United States of america, you do not go beating up people. People have a right to peacefully protest and i hope that becomes the tone of his campaign. Host that was Bernie Sanders yesterday. We want to hear from you this morning. Katie is a trump supporter coming in from new orleans, louisiana. Which event did you attend . Caller i attended the rally in new orleans and i was very impressed with donald trump. I like donald trump for years ever before he got in the running for politics. That he wantsved the best for this country. Tell us what you saw through your own eyes at that event that you want to. Was there any violence . Was there any protest . Was it like what has been shown on tv . Caller nothing like what has been shown on tv. It was very peaceful, very organized. I mean, there was no interruption in his speech. The couple people heckled him a little bit, but they put them out quietly. It was a very pleasant experience. Hecklers oro big big protesters causing a lot of trouble. There were a couple of people, but they were quieted and let out and they were not hurt. They were not strongarmed or beat up or anything. They were commonly just taken out. Host that is katie in new orleans. Rick in florida, what was your experience like that at a trump event . Caller im a working man, so i dont have time. The reason im calling is that i have been accosted at red light by Trump Supporters because of the Bumper Sticker on my car for Hillary Clinton. Ive had that Bumper Sticker removed from my car while i am sitting in parking lots. Ive had people flip me off in traffic and call me names. Ive had the hillary sign in my front yard ripped up and thrown in my yard twice. I do not think this is john kasich supporters that are doing this. I think donald trump because he off ofled the old tarp all the hate that they have been trying so hard to hide in america. The best thing that Trump Supporters can do is go get themselves a history book and then a civics book and see how this government works. And then just maybe, they might educate themselves, but i do not man inthing but a show donald trump. In fact, he gives a lot of credence two i believe it was pt barnum who said, theres a sucker born every minute. That is your basic trump supporter. Host we would go to scott on the line for Trump Supporters in indiana. Your experience at the event . Im from Central Indiana up to chicago and his love of the supporters of their work were of the latino community. Host was this the chicago event that got shut down . [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, caller yes, it eventually got shut down. You had a lot of scuffles inside of the actual protesters. Host so how long did you stay and when did things start to get out of hand to the point it had to be shut down . Caller about the time of his arrival. Im trying to think about the. Ime im not remembering quite offhand what the exact time was that they called it off. We basically did not want to take a chance as a family. Host did you bring children to the event . Caller i have my 16 euro son with me. He is autistic. We really wanted to see donald trump and it was a real disappointment. Host what happened when you left . Caller the Hillary Clinton supporter that called earlier host go ahead, scott. This is something that is started by the clinton organization, believe it or not. Thes trying to divide sanders. Host that is scott in kokomo, indiana. Scott will be the last caller in the segment. One last story i want to make you aware of before we move on to our next segment. The governor of michigan expected to testify about the flood water crisis on capitol hill this week. That testimony expected to happen on thursday. Here is the story in the Washington Post about rick snyder getting ready for that testimony before the Committee Investigating the water crisis. Snyder declined to be interviewed for the story, but his chief of staff said that when the governor appears before the committee, he will i go his state of the state address in january for which he apologized to the people of flint and accepted responsibility for the catastrophe. He will also cite the warning signs that varies levels of government overlooked and talked about the Current Conditions in flint and discuss how other cities would lead pipes can avoid similar crises. That testimony happening up here on capitol hill on thursday. A lot more for you on the show this morning on the washington journal. Up next, well be joined by pete ner, discussing his lead story from Time Magazine on the report can party. Later, we are joined by ken burns to talk about his latest project, Jackie Robinson. \ campaign 2016 continued on tuesday with primaries taking place in missouri, illinois, and swing states ohio, North Carolina, imploded. Campaign speeches and be a reaction take place at 7 00 eastern. Road to the white house on cspan, cspan radio, and cspan. Org. Tonight on the communicators, jim halpert and john simpson, project privacy director for consumer watchdog, discuss how the sec should develop privacy regulations for the internet. They are joined by howard buster. Longerftc can no regulate the bad aspect of an Internet Provider or a telekinetic Edition Service provider aspect of the business of internet aspect providers. Most of the rules that exist existed in the world of telephones. Now that they have extended by the situationon to cover isps, they have to come up with rules more appropriate to the world of open internet, not just telephones. Watch the communicators tonight 00 at 8 00 eastern test tonight at 8 00 eastern on cspan two. Announcer washington journal continues. Host pete wehner is a senior fellow at the Public Policy center. Before that, he served on mitt romneys campaign and before that work for both bush administrations and is a self described child of the reagan revolution. This makes the upcoming Time Magazine cover piece interesting. The party of reagan is no more is the headline on your story. , in that tease, you write that donald trump is the antithesis of so much that reagan stood for. What do you mean by that . Guest boasts of, temperament, and disposition both in disposition,nd this differences. Reagan had a set of ideas and yet a governing agenda and i do not think donald trump has any of that. Ronald reagan was a man of considerable grace and class. Mitch daniels, a very successful governor of indiana, had worked for Ronald Reagan. , mitch wasa meeting telling the story of how he was up because some of the criticisms against president reagan, he felt were out of bounds. That car. To hit president reagan told him that remember we dont have e enemies, we have opponents. I think i pretty much every scale that matters in the public figure that Ronald Reagan was superior to donald trump. Trump is anld ive threat to be republic to the Republican Party and i think, reagan was very good for the Republican PartyRonald Reagan was very good for the repost and party. Host donald trump would argue that he has brought millions of new people to the Republican Party. Look at the numbers of primary voters in their up across this country in every state that has had a republican primary the cycle. Guest Ronald Reagan was a real friend of immigrants. And read back iand his speeches, he won to welcome people to this country. That is very different than donald trump. Even on illegal in addition, Ronald Reagan offered amnesty to 3 million Illegal Immigrants and donald trump wants to deport the people in this country. My point is that there was a different attitude and temperament and approach. When you get to your question of welcoming people in, i would say a couple of things. One is that Ronald Reagan did that, too. He brought in reagan democrats. You go to a state like michigan where people their whole lives voted democrat. It is true that donald trump is bringing in particularly low income or noncollegeeducated bluecollar workers to the party, but at the same time, a lot of people are going to be leaving the party. Just from a demographic standpoint, trump is supporting a group that is demographically shrinking and is alienating groups that are increasing. Just as a political matter, what thep is doing in redefinition of the repost and party is going to be quite problematic. Let me illustrate this point. If you go back and read about the election of 1956 and 1960 when eisenhower one and nixon lost to kennedy. Many black votes that eisenhower and nixon won. Eisenhower 138 of the black vote and nixon 132 of the black vote. Goldwater was against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was a monumental issue in the lives of African Americans. Goldwater one single digit. Republicansime, 64 i do not think they have gotten more than 10 . As a regular basis, they dont. In other words, that moment was so searing to black americans that republicans have never been able to reclaim that group of americans. Thats despite having figures like jack kemp make efforts to do it could i. If this trump phenomenon continues, i think it will happen with hispanic americans. Host i want to bring in the callers as well. 202 7488000. Republicans 202 7488001. 202 7488002 202 748800. Calledhner has a piece who really destroy the party of reagan . John is up first. Good morning. Caller reagan was not that much different than trump. He was much, much smoother without a doubt. Who opened his campaign in philadelphia, mississippi, where civil rights workers were killed and he blackbox and welfare queens and pink cadillacs. He also ignored aids and left that people who had aids for years. Magic johnson had been named the fitness director for the country or Something Like that and then he tested positive, so he was immediately fired. Reagan and his entire cabinet was indicted. They were just parted. Doned. Liken is just trump other republican presence of candidates wolves in sheeps clothing. Host you are wrong in several things. Magic johnson to mega was not in the reagan administration. It was in the george h. W. Bush administration. Secondly, he was not fired. He left of his own pleasure. When you say the entire reagan cabinet was indicted, thats silly. You cannot make up fact. That has not happened fo. All you can do is argue about the record itself and see what Ronald Reagan was in his words and deeds. Im not saying Ronald Reagan was perfect. No politician is perfect republican or democrat. Ronald reagan and his words and acts is a fundamentally different than donald trump and is one of the on over as manyw people as he did. If Ronald Reagan was the person portrayed in the be, they wouldve thrown him out in 1984. I should ask them how many states he won in 1984 and that was 49 out of 50. If what he said was correct, it would be ludicrous to say that he would win 49 out of 50 states. Host i want you to compare the words and styles of Ronald Reagan with donald trump. There is a new ad that talks about Donald Trumps words and the types of words he uses on the campaign trail. The American Future Fund is a conservative, nonprofit, known to be aligned with astonishment replicants. Went to an ivy league school. I very highly educated. I have the best words. If he gets the nomination, they are going to sue his [beep]. P] outre ripping the [bee of the sea. I the best words. [beeou can tell them to go p] themselves. Can you imagine Ronald Reagan using those kinds of words . Guest i cannot imagine Ronald Reagan using those words privately when he was angry. I think the worst that he wouldve said wouldve been hell and even then, in his diaries, he would not spell the word out. He would use asterisks because he felt like that was over the line. That makes the point. There is donald trump in all this glorious and gracious words. I want to Say Something about that ad. That tells uste something. I said that to somebody i know, an evangelical christian. Im an evangelical christian as well. He had been somewhat supportive of trump and i sent that video to him. Asant him to be aware of it i thought it would be something that he would want to factor in. He sent me back a note, thanks for the good laugh this morning. I thought, thats quite amazing, isnt it . Language for a social conservative man who wants to be present of the United States other in an audience of women and children and his response was a gave me a good laugh. Its not funny. If you ask me all the problems i have with donald trump, his cursing would be low on the list. Once upon a time, conservatives cared about our common culture and our popular culture. That used to think that the character of a president mattered because of the nature of the office and the visibility of the individual. What that person says and how he conducts himself since radiating messages to other people. That is true in the good and that is true in the bad. When donald trump says that kind of trash, that has an effect. He is a foulmouthed guy. People hear this kind of stuff and think this is a synonym for confidence. This is not a synonym for toughness. And is someone who is crude vulgar and has not proved his toughness in any way. This is a very odd period. Host heres the inside jump of the Time Magazine piece. Pete wehner is our guest for the next halfhour. Tonya is up in michigan on the line for republicans. Caller good morning. Reagan,e deify ronald let us not affect the irancontra. Ive been an observer of the political scene since i was 12 years old. Trump really does not say what he plans on doing aside. Rom building a huge wall mexico has told him that they would not pay for it. The people that are in these frenzied rallies, they do not seem to know the powers of the presidency. Summon adent cannot foreign order to build in mexico. There are many different ways to do that coul. It is kind of a pollen to me that ignorance of the people out there rallying and jumping. I think sometimes people are just going to these rallies just to see what kind of a sideshow there is. Many of them probably have no intention of voting for him. I certainly hope not because our country needs serious people. Can i ask you on the line for republicans who you are supporting . Caller ive not decided yet. That republican is going to be independent. Even though i am or was or maybe a republican, when i see the democrats, their discussions are so much more sane and civil. These trump rallies are like going to a circus. Host pete wehner . Guest a couple of things. I try not to deify Ronald Reagan. Onea christian so there is 80 in my book and Ronald Reagan is not it. In the totality of his acts he was in the present man. Irancontra was a bad moment in his presidency. Fire the people in his administration who worked very closely and honestly with the irancontra committee. He looked into it and dealt with the problem. It shouldnt have happened, but he dealt with it. In terms of donald trump and the thinness of his policy, i agree with tonya. It is one of the stunning things about m donald trump to me that people who wants cared about the ideas of american politics are now supportive of donald trump, either actively support of or at least meeting in the direction of him. This is a man centimeter deep on Public Policy. You have seen it in debates. He does not know the difference between the force of the kurds. He was asked what the Nuclear Triad was. Fast forward, he is asking questions in the Republican Debate on it and he still. Has no idea what it is. He did not take the time to google it and that time. In the recent debate, he was asked about high skilled workers, immigrants. Within a matter of probably 12 hours, he reversed himself three different times. His website said he was against it. He was on the debate and actually said i change my mind. Originally, he was against them. In the debate, he renounced his website and his position. And then after the debate, his Campaign Came out and said, no, he is still against it. This happens on and on and on. You ask him about the budget deficit, which is a concern supposedly to a lot of republicans. They are scared about limited government and so forth. Ofis an active opponent entitlement reform. When i asked what he will cap for programs, talking about waste fraud and abuse, he has no idea. He has no governing philosophy and no interest in issues. One of the really sad things about this campaign and we saw it this morning in terms of the wels you got about trump, can talk about the violence. This has a displacement effect. Instead of talking about issues that are complicated and that we need to have a public conversation about, trump is out there spouting this nonsense, but he has the ability to seize the microphone in the moment. We are having this the ethical debate instead of a real and substantive debate and that is one of the tragedies of election 2016. Waiting ons the line for democrats. Caller thank you for your time. I wanted to elaborate on the Republican Party. Ive been checking this out for a long time as far as different parties between democrats and republicans. Republicans have been in bad shape for a long time. They dont seem to be getting any better. I look at what happened even with bush and gore. When gore had florida that night, they gave it to him. Seener in my life have announced like it was. He had florida and they gave it to bush. People knew it was wrong. And jeb bush would not lose the state of florida. Another thing that happened within that evening as far as stopping people from going to the polls and arresting people for doing different things. Host let us let pete wehner jump in. Guest james is wrong because and they didida several recounts and bush won that state. That is factually incorrect. In terms of the broader problem in terms of problems with president s, that is fine. People can blame republican and democratic president s for the bind that we are in. That theno question public is struggling. Ive written about this for many years, particular people many who were in manufacturing jobs. Of the American Economy is changing because the nature of the World Economy is changing. I do think that people need to be cognizant of the fact that what we have got going on now is epic economic changes. Its analogous to the industrial revolution. Andt of what is going on why some American Workers are finding it hard is not because every republican or democrat having to do with the globalization, ships and automation and huge advances in technology. What youre getting is more efficiency by machines rather than people. That is causing this displacement effect. You cannot stop progress just like you wouldve been insane to say we would not move toward automobiles and key people with horses and buggies. If you were a person in the horse and buggy business, that would have a displacement effect. That is going on a larger scale. The question is how do you adjust to the changes . And that is what politics has to do. Segment, thee caller from pennsylvania said the senator said these issues are complicated. Actually, there is a complicated element to this. People elected to public life are not stupid. They are not einstein either, and theres often gridlock could some of these issues are really difficult to manage. People have to take that into account. Host one of the pieces you can read pete wehner and his work is in the new york times. Why i will never vote for donald trump. Who are you supporting . Guest it has on who the republican nominee is. If the nominee is anybody other than donald trump, i would support that person whether it is john kasich or marco rubio or ted cruz. If it is donald trump, i dont know. Im not going to vote for donald trump in any circumstance. I cannot do that in good conscience. I could elaborate on that if you would like. I would not be inclined to vote for Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders because they stand against pretty much everything i stood for in my public life. Im a conservative. I would probably write in a name or if there was a thirdparty candidate, vote for thirdparty candidate. Would vote down ballot on why i would not vote for donald trump, because ive gotten criticism from fellow republicans on that who cannot fathom that decision, and the short version is i really think he is an active threat to the country. I think he is erratic and unstable and unprincipled. Temperamentally, having worked in three administrations closely with one president and read a lot of American History, i think temperament is a public character that matters and i do not think there is a worse temperament than donald trump to the idea of a Nuclear Armed donald trump is scary. Thatdonald trump could do hill he and Bernie Sanders could not do is fundamentally redefined the Republican Party in a very injurious way. I think donald trump for a whole variety of reasons would really be automatic. Problematic. Host david in johnstown, pennsylvania. Caller my name is david. Are you talking to me . Host yes, you are on with pete wehner. Caller thank you very much. Im not into politics too much, but ive been following it this year with my father. A lot of people are against donald trump and donald trump does have some bad things he is out there saying and stuff like that. At the same time, this country. Ately has gone so far downhill we have people from the United States that are starving out on the streets, veterans that are coming back that cannot get housing and stuff like that, cannot get ramps built or anything, and they are sneaking syrians here at 3 00 in the morning. They said as soon as they get off the plane, the hardest thing the have to do is sign the check and they get housing right away. Also, im 48 years old. Ive never voted for the reason ive not voted up until this every time i see someone get out there and say they are going to do this and do that, i know they have congress and senate to fight to get things done. Hey dont do anything of what they say they are going to the. Do. They lead people hanging. They just want the votes. Im sorry about the mexican vote and stuff like that, but when they are in the country illegally, first off, they dont have a right to vote. When they do come in here illegally like that, if they cannot follow the rules and leave the country when they are supposed to and they have these rallies and stuff like that, then i agree with donald trump. They should be picked up and taken out of this country. Ere. theres a lot tha guest let me try to entangle some of that. We have a net outflow of mexicans rather than an inflow. The idea of whatever anyone thinks of immigration, the problem is significantly less than 10 or 12 years ago. That is point number one. Point number 2 in terms of his articulation of the problems the country faces, i agree in large measure with what he said. The country is struggling and ive written and have been quite a vociferous critic of president obama. Made real has mistakes and has exacerbated some of our political problems. He campaigned in 2008 as a unifier and a healer and i think he has been quite the opposite of that. I think the afford will care act has been a terrible program poorly an implemented and problematic in terms of what it does for health care and the robber American Economy. I think he has been terrible on Foreign Policy. I get there are problems in america. I would say as a caveat to that that im not sure there is any country in the world that is in better shape than america. There is not any other country i would want to live in other than america. Maybe dave is different and people can leave this country if they dont. For all the problems that president obama has, we have a recovery going on. It is the weakest recovery and postwar history, but it is coming along. There are these structural problems, so i get that. And i hearre this all the time, people are so frustrated with problems facing the country that say donald trump, we need him. What is it exactly that donald trump offers in terms of policies and agenda and philosophy to solve the problem . Ere. E is no there th this is just an expression of anger and rage. And you press him on it supporters on it, what are you going to do about the deficit . Id they say, the one thing will do is attack paul ryan because he wants to reform entitlement spending our health care. There was the othe utterly embarrassing moment and you debate or marco rubio said, why dont you tell us about your Health Care Plan . In other words, donald trump is tapping into this anger and unhappiness and sense of frustration. He is such a massively imperfect vehicle for it and that matters. Im sorry, voters. I know we are supposed to cobble and say that voters are angry and therefore you can say what you want. No, you cannot. You are americans. This is a selfgoverning country. You have to hold politicians to standards. I just do not think that Trump Supporters for the most part are doing it. I know they do not like hearing that. To borrow donald trump, lets tell it like it is. Host pete wehner for about 15 more minutes is with us to talk 2016 his view on campaign and his cover story for Time Magazine. He is a senior fellow at the ethics and Public Policy center. Herbert is waiting for you next in georgia on the line for democrats. Good morning. Caller good morning. Peter, i want to ask you a question. Im 65 years old, and military man who fought in the vietnam war. Republicansd that do not attract the black vote, the reason why is we do not feel welcome. If you do not feel welcome to come in that restaurant, youre not joining in. We do not see many black officials in there. The reason why donald trump is going on in your party im a could you and your man everyon. Everyone wants to see their own character. E is not Ronald Reagan he has his own figure who says he built his own towers off his own account was mean a compliment. A compliment. Host stick around for next hour. Ken burns is going to join us on his documentary on Jackie Robinson. We will get into the Civil Rights Movement and the history of the black vote in this country and Jackie Robinsons role there. Guest thanks for your service to the country in vietnam. When the anon veterans, they were not afforded the honor they deserved so thanks for that. In terms of the Republican Party and africanamericans, a couple of things for i do not agree with you. Thatnot agree that you say there are no black officials in the Republican Party. Ran for the help him party and you had herman cain four years ago. Others. Scott and are there enough . No, but that is growing. Secondly, i agree with you by and large. You say, why does a party attract or not attract certain groups . Some of it certainly has to do with policies in the sense whether this party will represent my interests. But there is also tone and posture and attitude and disposition. I think there is not much of a question that since that moment of 1964, for a variety of reasons, republicans have sent a message to african that they do not really care for them. And that is not out of racist sentiments. Theres obviously some racist in the Republican Party like there are in the Democratic Party. Part of what is going on is that some people feel like this is a group that is not going to vote for us. Theres a certain amount of time that we have during campaigns and we are going to go to audiences where we can win people over then speak to groups that are hostile to us or well get a hostile reception. I do not agree with that. I think its wrong. As a president , you have to appeal to every group in america and try to make a case. What happens with africanamericans in the Republican Party, and might happen with hispanics the way donald trump is talking. Host tom is waiting in woodbridge, virginia. Caller in the last few ca llers, you pretty much said what i wanted to say. Donald trump is tapping into unfortunately of your you went ulent anger. Ir its not about what the republicans have done, but the absence of leadership in regard to the growth of entitlements, the lack of military campaign against isil. There just a huge amount of anger in the conservative movement in the United States and he is essentially stoking the flames. That is where we are seeing this violence at some of his rallies and things like that. Host on what we have seen from these rallies and the question we asked our viewers in the first 45 minutes, i know you saw a little bit about it about what they have experienced in the different experiences that have happened. Guest look, these rallies and what is happening is troubling to me as an american. I would say two things about it. One is that it really bothers me that there are groups out there like moveon. Org and other groups that want to shut down public debate and public speech. That is really offensive. Its not american and its not the way we solve our problems. The way you do it in this country is debate them and make the more compelling argument. You let the other side speak and say this is why you are wrong and why im right. The idea of shut people down a run on the platform and do something to donald trump that is horrible and should not happen. The man has a right to make his case. People have a right to go to his rallies and hear him and not be interrupted by protesters. That is number one. Number two is that even if there is a protester, and protesters are being pulled out, the idea that youre going to sucker punch some guy has happened at a rally in North Carolina as an antitrump protester was being taken out. Thats also horrible. It is worse because it is the use of violence. And then you have donald trump himself, who rather than channeling this anger in a constructive way and calming the situation down, he is an bring imping it up. It is the great genius of donald trump to take these passions and anger and stoke them to make people more better and more enraged. This is the kind of figured that the founders feared. The founders feared demagogues. You read James Madison and the concerns of the founding generation. What was one of the theories behind the constitution . The idea of the dangers of passions. They set out a system of checks and balances that were supposed to cool the passions. It was supposed to insulate the country from people like donald trump. You see what happens. There is a responsibility of political leadership. Bushter 9 11, george w. When he was president , if he had come out and attacked american muslims and said lets go burn the mosques and that these people hate america, it would have gotten very ugly if he wouldve pointed at them. Instead he did the right thing, which is political leadership, to calm things down that remind american muslims are americans, too. Donald trump is a very different mind. I think theres responsibility on both sides. If you have put to a single individual in this case, it is donald trump because he is running and there are duties that go with the responsibility of leadership, an in terms of what tom said, two thirds of republicans are against donald trump now. He is winning because he has consolidated a certain large group. A lot of people oppose him. He is the lowest among conservatives. That is the interesting thing. If you go to moderate and liberal republicans, he is lowest among conservatives. Officials conservative to their credit have taken trump on. Not all, but a lot. Host james is in new york. Good morning. Caller mi on the air . Host you are with pete wehner. Caller you glazed over a little bit about the decline in the economy and big business moving impacts has had a huge on the decline in the economy. Its created a lot of this anger. To the honest with you, i think that is more unpatriotic than any protester standing up in the middle of Donald Trumps rallies. I believe that they should pay their fair share the matter what the taxes they use. They use our highways and bridges and ports. They need to pace of the next business can use the roads and bridges and ports. All them going overseas leaves a big hole for that to be done and that is why our bridges are crumbling right now. I like to know what you have to think about all that. A couple of things i do not think the reason our bridges are crumbling is because businesses are going overseas. This is a phenomenon that i cannot think i glazed over, but im happy to dial more on it. Its the phenomenon of globalization and free trade. These things are not cost free. These businesses are going over because it makes sense and this goes two ways. This whole idea of having free trade consumers benefit from this kind of thing. One of the things that really troubles me and worries me when donald trump talks about this of and heawbridge goes on and on about free trade could thi,. This used to be a staple of the Republican Party. Ronald reagan was a free trader. This was bipartisan. Nobody talked about the benefits of free trade and globalization. These things. P life goes on and progress goes on. What you have to do as a responsible country and a responsible set a politician is that as people lose jobs because of technology and automation and globalization and so forth, you have to prepare them through that transition time and prepare the Younger Generation of workers for the kind of jobs that you have. Policy,d trumps trade 45 tariffs on china put into effect, we are looking at a global recession. To see a recession that mocks people to their knees, try global recession that we are going to get if Donald Trumps tariff policy goes into affect into effect. Host audrey, go ahead. Caller how do you do . Thank you for this american privilege. I am nervous. Please bear with me. Yes, i would like to ask a question from a different perspective. Please bear with me. Again, i am nervous. I want to ask a question and ng a perspective about the what i consider a very unusual president ial election in light of the extraordinary popularity of donald trump. Regardless of how certain people attempt to minimize his popularity, here is a different aspect of why i think it exists. It is because people such as myself, who follow politics relatively closely and watch a great amount of news on fox , im not able to receive responses, for instance, from my senators of North Carolina and even my congressman when i call their personal numbers that are available for raleigh, North Carolina, or when i call washington, d. C. Host we only have a minute left and i went pete wehner to respond. What is the question . Caller the question is why are the sophisticated intellectuals such as your guest not recognizing the and personality of our government . I cannot ever get a response from my senators cou. Lets take one issue as an example. Host im going to let pete wehner jump in. That therederstand is an personalization of government. I do not think the critiques or complaints or frustrations that people have our manufactured, at least not all them. My point is trump is a massively imperfect vehicle. He is not massively popular. He is not even massively popular in the book and party. Right now. So he is not popular in the isntry and the second thing it is been a problem. Whole variety of reason, the congress, senate, and house tends to be more responsive to people than before. I think it is a divided country and there is a plot of conflict going on. If you want to read more of we appreciate your time. Guest thank you. Host up next we are going to be here with ken burns to discuss his new work, Jackie Robinson. The, the latest on president s and pending Supreme Court justice nomination. Pending ts and ing Supreme Court justice nomination. Campaign 2016 continues on tuesday. Live coverage of the election results, candidate speeches, and is on cspan,ns cspan radio, and cspan. Org. Fabric of seeing the our country and think how things work and how they are made. I had no idea they did history. With American History tv, it gives you that perspective. I may cspan fan. Fan. Cspan when i tune in on the areends, usually authors sharing new releases. On cspan, they can have a longer conversation and delve into the structure. Book tv weekend, they bring you author after author after author. I love book tv and ima cspan fan i am a cspan fan. Washington journal continues. Desk, ken burns is at our who will release a documentary on Jackie Robinson. The baseball legend Jackie Robinson is who we are going to talk about. I want to go back to what when Jackie Robinson broke the baseball color barrier. Guest there has always been a Civil Rights Movement in america. 1619, people that have been held as slaves have wanted to be free. After the civil war, there has been attempts to make that happen with reconstruction. Jackie is the beginning of the modern Civil Rights Movement. Field, walked onto the Martin Luther king was a junior in high school. Jackie as a teenager did it on his home own. Rosa parks is a decade away from giving up her seat on the bus. Jackie had done it earlier in the army. That iso realize an important part of understanding the significance of africanamerican champions. Jesse owens and track and field in track and field, mohammed ali in boxing. The republican mayor of new york was pushing for it. Jackie had to actually do it. Host you mentioned the Martin Luther king quote. There is also a quote from his wife, who said baseball was a bridge to the Civil Rights Movement. Why did jackie have to come first . Guest its interesting. Baseball seems like one tiny fraction of our entertainment spectrum. It was the national pastime. Baseball was it. It was a huge, important significance. Unfortunately, it has been smothered in myth. We have spent the last several aars producing the last documentary. It gets at a more complex just the year he started playing. It is a complex story of an africanamerican family, also a spectacular love story. When you realize his widow 93, she spent more of her life without him than with him. She is been carrying the torch in and impressive way. Host were going to be talking for the next hour. Can burns is our guest. Ken burns is our guest. Robinson. Ned rachel i want to show the viewers one of the clips from the documentary. We never really had a honeymoon. Planes. Bumped from two , you may needthis it. We were embarrassed. We were bumped in new orleans and that the cola, florida. In passengers were put in our place. I went to the white ladies bathroom just so i could recover my own sense of myself. We finally took a bus to spring training from jacksonville. On our honeymoon. Busent to the back of the and when it got dark, i started to cry because i had felt my great husband, who had been a fighter and a dignified person, had been reduced by this mination and segregation by discrimination and segregation. Caved in to what society had wanted in the south. But, the Fried Chicken was great. Host 93yearold Rachel Robinson says that the role she played in helping to make this possible. Sum would have been impossible without her. She started the Jackie Robinson foundation this film would have been impossible without her. She started the Jackie Robinson foundation. She is and extraordinary image link. Being. Xtraordinary human forpushed me to do this years. She said he deserves standalone treatment. Sarah burns and David Mcmahon had finished the film, central we had anealized opportunity to do it. For the last several years, we had been working on that. Without her help and willingness to share not only the triumphs, but also the struggles of her life with jackie, i dont think we would have the film that we have. She is essential to it. Tot for viewers who want watch it, it is airing in two parts on april 11th and 12th on pbs. First, a democrat from columbus, ohio. Good morning. Caller good morning to both of you. How are you . Questioned a comment and question. Assume the er question is how much an option of fans going to new girl league games an an up shoot of fans going to new girl league guest i am not sure how to answer your first one precisely, gro leagues or a separately. League. A separate one of my favorite statistics in Major League Baseball is that , they wonie arrived 11 yearsine out of which tells you which you are missing. Is jackie plays leagues. In the negro he got a chance to play with Satchel Paige and some of the other great players and talk to them about his own sense of discrimination. It was something to push against and rail against. In 1947, the great historic moment in bringing him up. Became an extended farm system. Interestingly enough, is the last negro leaguer to play in the majors. Im 62 years old, almost 63. 53. Ie died at age , 20 years older. Many believe it was the load he had on his shoulders. ,e had believed all his life working to help others. The death certificate says he died of congestive heart by your and the symptoms of diabetes and i think his widow would like to believe that. Went through him with that. She was not ducking from heart she but in her was. Connecticut isr, next. Eddie, good morning. Aller good morning it is an opportunity to understand more about racial cause and effect. In the beginning during the , they helpednation carry the supplies through the snow and the woods. Once the british got out of here, president George Washington set his slaves free. The other generals had different ideas other than the american constitution. , slavesled their slaves after. The slaves that George Washington set free carried a very heavy heart because the they helped fight against the british, were called slaves after that. Generals had different ideas. They did not want the people to have the power to vote on the things that the generals wanted. The generals wanted to keep that power in congress to be able to put things on the floor of our house and then the only ones. Llowed to vote guest thats right. You bring up an exurban or in the history of the United States and George Washingtons example was ignored. Let me just amend a little what you said. The constitution did not say all people were created equal, the declaration did. That was written by thomas jefferson, who owned 100 human beings. Generals, andthe that example. In fact, the constitution of the United States tolerated slavery and made africanamericans 3 5 of a person. It is a central contradiction. Hat we are a free people 1861, when the war began, 4 are owned bycans other americans which just cannot work. I think we are still trying to figure out how to escape this specific gravity of this great original sin many historians call it. , the originaly apple. Adam eating the all menca, it is that are created equal. I think the civil war is in effect from that. I think what were seeing today with all of the incentive race. S innuendos of we have still got a long way to go. Host ronnie is in oklahoma city. Good morning. Caller good morning and good morning mr. Burns. I appreciate your scholarship and scholarly work. Just wanted to know and in African American was just wondering, why is it do africanshistory is not talked about outside of slavery and knowing that African People existed long before slavery started. Why is it that african history is taught, you know, more inclusive so people have a broader idea of what africans may have contributed to itilization other than started as slavery. Guest it is a hugely essential point. You know, we have black history month. It is our coldest and shortest month. Sort of think of africanAmerican History as not part of it. That we people complain are trying to take away history. I think what youre suggesting is how do we expand history . How do we tell a history that includes everyone . For a long time, the only history we used was an ancient one. Createa sudden here er here we are with the United States of america. It is essentially european. The more you know, it does not mean the less you care about the others. Impoverishede are if you dont include everybody in our history. I will give you an example. I was just inch olson talking about race after the terrible tragedy there and trust and is a 48 ofhere 40 africans entered through their there. As we talk about the Confederate Flag, people say youre trying to take away the heritage. Nobody is wanting to do that. Towant to expand history include all americans. Lets rumored that the first in 1619. Me that is before the mayflower. Integration just means expansion and i think as you suggest, the more we know, the more we know. History completely repeats itself it seems. Viewers want to show one more segment from the document or a. Documentary. In the fifth inning, the game was halted. We sang happy birthday. We gave him a card. While the lights were down, the ground crew brought out a Small Confederate flag in his honor fromuse he was louisville, kentucky. Jackie is irate. He was livid. Jim crow back let perlthe ballpark . Jim back into the ballpark . He saw no reason he should have to i tried to get a conversation of race that goes beyond the initial isnt that sad . But some of the flag in columbia. Oft we forgot is that sales Confederate Flags spikes. Host this conversation continuing tonight at George Washington university. Guest doors open at 6 00 47 00 show at George Washington university. We want to have a conversation with all americans and talk to them about what we can do. We like to think that history repeats itself. It doesnt. Im listening interested in listening to it rhyme. Jackie robinson story in the. Ast the Confederate Flag that we are talking about was not even the official flag of the confederacy. About taking way heritage, it is about taking away resistance to the idea that all men are created equal. If you dont believe that, then we have to have another conversation because that is the american creed. What we want to do is tell a more inclusive history. It is said there are still some 1800 monuments to the confederacy around the country. We need to look at those and understand and look at how all citizens relate to it. Host a conversation with ken burns about Race Relations and robertson Jackie Robinson. Lets go to the democratic line. Good morning. Caller good morning. I met Jackie Robinson here in ofcago when he came because a i was assigned to him as a bodyguard. Ohareim at i did not get a chance to speak with him privately like i wanted to. Host what would you have said to him if you have that chance . Toler i wanted to tell him be a moderator. Host what do you mean by that . The crowdll, when rushed him. They were very upset. It was my job to make sure that nothing happened. Guest there is a wonderful thing about Jackie Robinson that even though i felt like i knew made, wefilm that we learned more of him. We got to strip away a lot of the mythology. He got up every day to make the lives of other people better. He understood that that was his work and a lot of us talked to talk, but he actually walked the walk. It is incredibly moving that he was able to dedicate his life to the sacrifices of other people. He was so dedicated to equality. And he was willing to work for that. His own tombstone says that life is not worth anything except measured by the effect you have on other people. He worked every day to do that. It is such a powerful story. Jackie robinson was a republican for most of his life. He was disappointed when candidates like Richard Nixon or Barry Goldwater seemed to birthright original of the Republican Party, which was founded to end slavery. Host lets go to our line for republicans. Herb is waiting. Caller thank you very much for the opportunity. First of all, ken burns, you are one of the finest so makers in the country, and the world probably. I have to tell you this. Your documentaries, you dont seem to try to push an agenda. Guest no, sir. Caller you put out fact. Your documentaries are outstanding, but let me just tell you real quick a story. 1972, Jackie Robinson made an appearance at Dodger Stadium. He came out on the field. What happened was it was an oldtimers game. There were going to retire his number that date. I was there. There were players on the field like mickey mantle, stan visual, joe dimaggio they were all there. Musial, joe dimaggio they were all there. Brad pry had to help him out because he could hardly see. He walked out on the field and im telling you. Trust me when i tell you this. It was like royalty walked out onto the field. This is absolutely right. We cannot diminish what a powerful force Jackie Robinson was in American History. Good sports just a story. This is a story for the ages. This was an extraordinary human at the highest level. Look what happened when Michael Jordan tried to play and he could not hit. There is jack robison coming out. After his first year, he was more popular than eleanor roosevelt, frank cannot or, and dwight eisenhower. Only behind bing crosby. Us,ourse, the other part of the part of us that is resistant to this change. That cannot see beyond the persons color. I think what we see in jackie is our best selves. We want to be that when we look at Jackie Robinson. In 1993, there was a jewish where someoneana threw a rock in their window. Printed on the menorahs. Jackies the America Robinson was fighting for. I think we are feeling that maybe we are losing touch with that america. It is easier to gravitate toward the mob mentality than it is to do the harder, more christian thing. To turn the other cheek and to appeal to those better angels and i think what jackies example is. What clearly the crowd at Dodger Stadium felt, is that there is the embodiment of our best selves. For calvin is on our line democrats. Good morning. Caller i would like to talk about one of the biggest coverups in American History and that is when they take all of the africanamericans not all and the media and even some of the africanamerican players like reggie jackson, dusty baker, hank aaron. Im not sure about hank aaron, but they knew what was going on when they kicked those africanamericans out of wasball and what happened as soon as they went to the minor lease, that is when they cut all the biggest investigation out. Guest i donttypically what you are referring to. There was a time in the late 1800s where theyre able when there the white sox basically banned africanamericans. Africanamericans have had enormous opportunities. They represent about 75 of the National Football league. Of course, even more for the National Basketball week. While many of us, including the current commissioner want that to change, we realize it has to do with the variety of choices africanamericans have in choosing to go to football or basketball. Dont see a conspiracy there i will certainly look into what you said. I think we have to be on full that once jackie came through the door, it was not on close. Documentary is airing on april 11 and 12. Gotg the interviews, you one from president obama and the first lady. Yourself questioning whether you should be where you are. To be able to go back and have with someone you know loves you and has her back. That is priceless. Your back. That is priceless. It is hard to do that alone. There is nothing more important than a real partnership, which a probably what made him such great man because he had to find a partner. I think that is a sign of his character. That he chose a woman that was his equal. I dont think you would have had Jackie Robinson without rachel. Host that moment in the documentary there. A question from twitter. Do you think that jackie hownson would be happy with to obama has handled Race Relations . Guest i think so. I think the president is hasstrated himself that he has not been able to change the Race Relations. The onion had a headline that said black man given worst job in the world. It is interesting to watch jackie and rachel negotiate. In aave another couple different space and time, the president and the first lady, you realize how much they need each other. How much there are ordinary what we alleal with know if youre married, is that marriage is complicated. They did it magnificently. Perhaps without michelle, there have been would have been no president. It is incredibly moving and funny. Married,ho has been the nervous laughter. The larger part is we hoped we could escape the burden of race. It has not happened. Those people have also had their soil fertilized by the presence of africanamericans. We need to do is stand back, realize who we are as americans, and appeal to the better angels of our nature. Tell others how to be an a lot harder how to tell yourself how to be. Its a lot harder to measure your and say youre falling short. Them and say they and see other americans as just that, rather than part of a larger, expanding family. Strength has always been there are a lot of americans who think we should only be one thing or the other. In fact, what has gotten us through the most difficult of times is when we have makes and created a much stronger alloy. Im interested in all my work doing that. Host for viewers who are enjoying this conversation i join encourage you to. Span at 1 00 p. M. On cspan a conversation on race in america. We have about 25 minutes left with ken burns. Walter, on the republican line. Caller think you very much for taking my call. I think it is very interesting when we talk about race in this country and we talk about the injustices on both sides of the fence. White, black, hispanic print whatever the case may be hispanic. Whatever the case may be. When you say africanamerican, that is factually incorrect. Youre not african. You are american. I think when we say on one hand ,hat we all want to assimilate then you turn around and have black such as the naacp, magazines, black miss america, and on and on it goes. Puts thatdoes is that particular group in a special class. It puts them in a special,. Ittle bottle bubble it says to the rest of us that these people are going to be treated differently and i think the greatest injustice for the African Americans in this country is just that. That we dont say that what happened in the past was a absolutely horrible thing, but we are not going to treat you differently. Guest this is a hugely important question. I think it is part of the anger and misunderstanding. Lets rumored that if you went to butte, montana in 1880, you would find every sign in 14 includinglanguages croatian. If you look at the mayor of new york city, who got us through 9 11, he would call himself a proud attire in american italian american. It is very american and understandable to cherish your heritage. Done a place we have not good job of that is africans who came to this country. Some of those magazines, some of were beauty pageants created because they were not allowed into those things. When we talk about affirmative action we have to be there careful that you do not believe in no longer discrimination. Chris rock says i am a multimillionaire but you would not change places with me for a second. Meaning there are people who can talk about equality, but would not actually want to live as an africanamerican. Tamir rice, who is a 12yearold kid who is dead. If he was white, he would not be dead. Trayvon martin would not be dead if he was a White American so there are differences. I think what we have done is try to figure out. Everything is not equal. A friend of action, however flawed they might be, also dont understand the peculiar experiences that africanamericans have. They have the expense of being unfree in a free land. Things lly sets other americans who are discriminated against. You can go to chicago and still find croatian americans bette. Institution of slavery and we perpetuated it for a long time. 750ought a war that killed thousand people, more than all the other wars combined. We still struggle. There are a lot of awful americans who are in favor of discrimination and i think we ought not to focus on that moment, but say how do we make ourselves whole . The emancipation proclamation liberated not only slaves, but slaveowners. Who wants to be a slave owner . How do we free ourselves of our freery, in addition to africanamericans from their history . And how do we live out the true meaning of our creed, as dr. King said. I think we also have to verystand that its different than when catholic americans or does committed against. Discriminated against. The catholics have been fully integrated for the most part into american life. That is not true yet for africanamericans. To missouri. O richard is waiting on the line for the democrats. Caller i was listening to your program about Race Relations. I thought we had come a long way until we had a black president. Until we no tea party had a black president. Im 78 years old. My first thought of slavery was when my teacher read us oracle toms cabin. Uncle toms cabin. Unfortunate that a lot of black athletes have made history for this country. I agree. We still suffer. The president says it is nice to have someone who loves you and has her back. When youre able to see someone for their accomplishments and. Ot for the color of their skin people do not look at then we will be able to live out what our Founding Fathers proposed. Thomas jefferson had made those words bake enough. All white and free of debt. About the children and the elderly and the handicaps. We debate the unborn. All of these things. America is always in good shape. He says in pursuit of happiness. We always focus on what is happiness. Is that Lifelong Learning in a marketplace of ideas or material things . The key is not even the happiness, but the pursuit. Ecoming Something Else something better. I would suggest borrowing from lincoln, our better and jewels angels. Ant to talk i think our obligation is to we are being convinced that we are in a terrible place. In fact, we have enjoyed 72 months of increased employment. We have a car industry that is vibrant and making lots of profits. We did not crash too deeply after that. Wages are beginning to come up. Other countries that are supposed to be running rings around us like china, are having huge problems. Relatively is stable. The net emigration of mexicans to this country is actually negative. That is more mexicans are actually living than coming. To ime you need not sure you need to build a wall. We ought to be addressing the facts of our circumstances and not just permitting rabblerousers and mop people. Says get him. Independence from atlanta. Caller good morning. Guest good morning. Caller good morning, mr. Burns. Sorry moderator, i watch you all the time. I dont know your name. There are a couple of points i want to make. My first point is that in america we are always going to get the history of slavery wrong. First of all, we do not mention the first slaves which were white. They came out of england. As indenturedame servants to hide the fact they were slaves. Right, werethat going to have a problem. Second, it is not mentioned in the christian love that was given when the gods loveunderstand and law and changed over to christianity. We dont mention that. Guest i think you make a great point. This is hugely important. And enteredor those servants there was a time release pretty you had a. Of time and then you are free. And of course, africans were there for life. They changed wedding vows fort slaves, which was till death or distance do you part. I think it is one of the great ironies in history is that so many africans were stolen from andr culture and came adopted christianity and began christianity. All of the africanamerican experience can be, in some way, a lesson for all of us to understand an essential aspect of christianity that as wel as. It proves my point that the more inclusive we are come of the bigger history we have. We are, the bigger history we have. There is a scene in the Jackie Robinson film where he is asked to testify against the upper singer paul rosen. He made a statement saying blacks would not fight against the soviet union. About that. Sked one of the first deaths in the American Revolution is christmas cripuss christmas atticus. They have been supporting the ideals of freedom since they have arrived. Host back to our lines for republicans. Caller good morning. Guest good morning. Caller thank you for taking my call. I was born in the 1940s. ,m not a racist by any means but we know amongst ourselves that some people automatically looked down on other people. There are way people that act stupid and the same thing with hispanics and blacks. I play golf with a black group and i have been playing with them for years. My biggest problem with other races is they actually discriminate against their selves facetoface. That, they would call me a racist. Needs to be emphasize more. They need to start treating each other better and i think other people would treat them differently. Good i think you made a point. Lets member there arent if there was no cycles of history, what is there . That means that human nature makes the same and it imposes itself over the seemingly random chaos of events. You can hear the rhymes that mark twain supposedly said. My job is to listen to those rhymes. The one thing that is clear is that human nature remains the same whether you are black, white, yellow, green, whatever. There are people who are criminals, who would turn the other cheek and sacrifice themselves. It is always there. The problem is. Ira member i was interviewing shelby but and he was shelby i remember i was interviewing shelby foot. If the car happens to be filled with people other than you, i was standing on the corner and a car full of lack people came and splashed me. We have a hard time the singer hsing between events. We might observe another group of people doing something, but at our ownlook back society, our own collection of. Olks that is just human nature. That is as old as the old testament. There is nothing new under the sun. A republican line, good morning. Aller good morning thank you for the work you did. Guest thank you. Caller i have three questions to ask you. Host i dont know if we will be able to get all three. Caller what was the contributions of the africans in africa to slavery. . Guest this is a hugely important question. Coincidentally, i was speaking about this yesterday. One of the things that he says is we talk about the number of americans African Americans murdered by police, but we dont talk about the violence that africanamericans commit on one another. It is really true that the complicity of other africans in the slave trade. Africans were very much a part of it which proves my earlier point in that human nature remains the same. Not that black people are all this way or white people or all this way. We are all a commendation of those things. We know we do good things and bad things. The purpose of this is to learn from it and i think you have to tell the complete story. There is Something Like 15 million africans that were stolen from africa. About 400,000 came and the rest went into south america. Second. Enly go, wait a 1 30 thatlking about one 30t came to america. We ought to be able to have a conversation in which we look ourselves in the eye and you hear many candidates talking about clinical correctness, which political correctness. It ought to be the ability for all of us to talk freely about the truth of what actually happened. We have to be very careful. As you heard, there are people who are laboring under false understanding. They believe in some conspiracy. One german thought that certain africanamericans had been banned from baseball in the 1970s and 1980s. That did not happen. There are many africanamericans believe that aids is a cia plot. That did not happen. We have to say to ourselves, the isican slave trade, colorblind in terms of the perpetrators. They are likesay us. We have to understand that none of us have the experience of being a slave and particularly a slave in the United States in america which was born under all people being created equal. Host just two or three minutes left. , democrat from new york. I want to thank cspan for the viable wisdom we are hearing this morning from mr. Burns who i think is a national treasure. Guest thank you very much for televisionadd public as well. Host go ahead. To ask a question about Jack Robinson after he retired from baseball. I grew up in new york in the 1960s and our member is robertson coming to our high. Chool auditorium, grayhaired to speak about the dangers of drug addiction. Can you validate my memory . Are absolutely correct. Host this is a good place to end. Guest this is a really good place to end. We think that celebrities army and immune. Talk becky spent his whole life doing that and when his son, jackie junior jackie spent his whole life doing that and when his son ,ou can see in our film fiercely honest not just about ourselves. A reporter said you changed the lives of so many people. He said, i dont know about that. If i cant take care of my own family, what have i done . He was able to submit himself to the most rigorous scrutiny. I think if we do that for ourselves, each and everyone of us, we have the possibility to be made. We like to say, particularly in the christian religion, that man is made in gods image. There is almost nothing in our behavior that it is not true. We need to latch on folks like Jackie Robinson, like abraham lincoln, who actually pointed us in the direction on what it might be like to live in gods image. Not just about the words, not use them as a force field. Hii think what your point is jackie was able to wake us up in the most painful and difficult experiences. He said let us listen to the better natures better angels of our nature. Host ken burns conversation on race continues at the National Press club. Thank you so much. Come back again. Will get the latest on president obamas pending Supreme Court nomination, where that stands. We are going to put this question to our viewers, should the senate act on president obamas nominee before the election or should it way to . The numbers are on the screen. We will be right back. Tonight, a privacy and security lawyer and john simpson, privacy project director for the addressee crew for the addressee group the Advocacy Group they are joined by a editor howard busker. The ftc can no longer agulate that one aspect internet Service Provider or telecommunications Service Provider. There is now a rulemaking coming up where the ftc will decide what to put in place in lieu of or perhaps replicating the rules under the new authority. Most of the rules existed in the world of telephones. Now they have extended the they haveto cover to come up with the rules that were appropriate to the world of the internet. The communicators, tonight at eight eastern on cspan two. President obama expected to put forward his Supreme Court nominee. Our question in the last half hour to the washington journal today. 202, seventh 2027488000. We want to get an update on where things stand. Good morning. What is the latest on timing, is it expected this week . It is expected this week because of things going on elsewhere in the political calendar. Next week the president is going to cuba. We dont expect him to make the announcement from there. Back thestrongly set calendar for a potential conversation. We think it will probably be this week. Not, becauseably it is a major primary election day. Perhaps if not today, wednesday, thursday, or friday. Remind us where the field for those who have been vetted for this job stand. They have been looked at as potential democratic Supreme Court nominees for a number of twos, those who include judges on the d. C. Court of , a bill the chief judge clinton employee. Obamaen paul, and appointed to the ninth Circuit Court of appeals. Those names were underscored by unsourced sources from the white house community. Perhaps those are accurate indications. We know in past years the white house has been pleased about being able to fool the press on what they have been looking at. That are the ones likely candidates. There remains a chance a name we havent heard could come up. It is the president s prerogative. Everyone recalls when president george w. Bush selected harry has his white house counsel. Perhaps this will also prize us as well. We have heard familiar ones including judge garland. We can expect that, since we are making a noncontroversial pic. Had an article about a blockbuster issue coming up, such as public corruption issues on the docket. Explain how this potential fight over a Supreme Court nominee could impact use that impact those cases. Over the Supreme Court nominee could impact those cases. There is no chance we could have a nominee confirmed and seated before the next argument could take place. Doesnt matter what happens for these cases. The two major cases are a review of president obamas immigration policy. Also a review of the corruption conviction of former Virginia Governor robert mcdonald. Says the prosecution can really interpret the corruption statutes to broadly other politicians are looking closely at what the Supreme Court does, including senator bob menendez of new jersey, who is quite interested in what the court says. However, the new nominee wont affect those cases except in this possible way, which is if the Supreme Court is divided a dividedrtroom is the decision of the lower court stands breed if they think they are going to have a new justice joining them soon, they may schedule those cases for new argument if they are deadlocked. If there is no prospect for at least another year, which is what will happen if there is not , then they may dismiss the case or leave it as is. Host you can check out his work wsj. Com. Thank you so much. And our question for our viewers, should the said act or should the senate weight . We will start in with tyrone coming in from yorktown. Good morning. Are you with us . We will go to linda. Good morning. Caller hello . Hello . We will go to justin in ohio. Are you there . We will get that fixed in a second for you. We want to show you the front page of the washington times. Here is the headline, the other Political Campaign conservatives. Groups on the right start an ad ofpaign soon after the death Justice Antonin Scalia a, targeting with Key Senate Races in a message to let the people decide to choose the message of the high court by electing the the president to fill vacancy. Conservative operatives say the battle will only intensify if mr. Obama announces the nominee and expects to wage their multimillion dollar effort through the november election. The Washington Post also picking up on this topic. Groups on thethe left and right expected to get involved in this backandforth over the Supreme Court nominee. The Washington Post going through the left, groups like Leadership Conference and civil rights. Expect to hear those names again president s nominees made public. Go ahead justin. Can you hear me, you are on the washington journal. Should the senate act on the president s nominee active nominee . It is about time they all start doing their jobs, passing budgets, passing appropriation bills. There is a guarantee barack he wants to put in ninth the judge of their he better nominate somebody who can get a net who can get a majority of the votes. This doesnt have to be a contentious a silly thing. Everybody needs to start doing their jobs way better than they are. None of them do their jobs very well. Host so the Judiciary Committee should hold a hearing . That doesnt mean a person is going to get the votes. Do you think there should be a floor vote as well . Yes, but i cant imagine obama nominating a judge that gives out of committee. Its pretty simple, he needs to nominate a conservative and he will get out of committee. Lets go to valerie in columbus, ohio, and independent. Good morning. You have to turn down your tv and talk through your phone. You are on the washington journal, go ahead. Caller hello . Lets go to randall in washington, d. C. Go ahead. Can you imagine Mitch Mcconnell not doing his job when he was running for office. He still functioned as a senator. Each branch has a right to do their job and they shouldnt blackmail the president to nominate and Anthony Scalia type of justice, because that is unrealistic. Especially when they say there is no litmus test. Republicans kind of say a whole lot of things that they do not actually stand for. To be the most intrusive group into peoples women theirling abortion rights. This group of people do just whatever suits the situation. They have been one of the worst congresses where they have not done anything. I wish we could privatize congress or have a Second Congress that would work in competition with them. Host lets go to our line for republicans where steve is waiting in pennsylvania. Caller thank you for having me on. I couldnt agree more with justin. The republicans are making themselves look absolutely foolish. For years it has been a ploy to drag on if you dont like a they could have had one of those politics as usual moments and get the new president in there. Know you have to jump right out there and say we are not doing this. They are losing a lot of crossover votes that may have been sympathetic from the republican year. Lets stonewall this person and stonewalled that person. For obama, we elected them. The democrats elected him. Are so many other issues that are needed to be voted on too muchublicans christianity morals taking over the passing of laws. If the gop were smart, on twitter if the gop were smart to tom in new jersey, line for democrats. Good morning. Caller thanks for having me on. We talk about the constitution and bill of rights. They make the approval. Whos to say you hold off because of the timing on the concern . Problem, how come ted cruz is running for president of the United States and he is born in canada . What is the constitution say echo say . Host we will go to gerald in south carolina, line for independence. Echor can you hear me ok hear me ok . I couldnt agree more. The constitution is straightforward. I know im repeating what some of the other callers have said. I want to stand in concert those colors. Nominates, the senate advises. When you have any group, republican or democrat, any that will stand in opposition to the direction of the constitution, shame on those elected officials. The american people, they need to stand up and rise and say shame on you. Host the Senate Majority leader and the role he is going to play , the senateess minority leader talking about the role he will play in this process. The headline of the story, noting win or lose it will be a fitting task to a career that includes eight years of majority leader. During one of the most frankly tisa periods in history frankly partisan periods in history. Reid refusedid mr. The proposal about 10 minutes left on todays show, paul is in dallas, texas. Good morning. I dont think the senate should wait. If they do wait they are in violation of their oaths of office, to protect the constitution. The constitution does not call for a hearing. It does call for a vote. The president nominates the senate and advises consents on that nominee. Not some future nominee, that nominee. That is my comment. Taken as a part of this committee and charged with a violation of the oats of office. To our line for republicans. Caller i was watching cspan one they were having the debate about electing a justice. The last time they elected a justice, joe biden was a senator and they specifically stated that the democrats should wait until the next president ial election to appoint a justice. Now when i watch a debate, they are saying that isnt exactly what he meant, they didnt mean what he said. Always try to get something to go their way whenever they get a chance. They never stick to the rules they make themselves. When it comes time to follow the rules, they changed the rules. That is all i have to say. Host president obama last thursday in his joint press conference was asked about what he is looking for in a supreme in anticipation of a nomination that could happen this week. Here is his answer to that question. President obama i told you what i am looking for. I want somebody who is an outstanding jurist, who has ,mpeccable legal credentials who, by historical standards, question then court. Is of course it is somebody you want to make sure follows the constitution. Nd cares about things understands the necessary humility of a judge. Looking at what the elected branches are doing. It is not viewing themselves as in some way standing above elected representatives, but also recognizes the Critical Role that branch plays in, to ensure minorities the political system doesnt thatin a way systematically leaves people out, that are mindful of the inditions that are embedded our documents like the bill of rights. In terms of who i select, im and myo do my job expectation will be will the senate do its job . Host our question for viewers, should the senate act or weight . Good morning. Of course the senate should do his job. It is ridiculous to think we are not going to perform duties as a officials. David, good morning, you are on the washington journal. I just wanted to say i dont think the last year of presidency should be viewed as a lameduck presidency. I think the domination should be looked upon as a very serious manner. I think you should be able to view a bipartisan bill, even if from the democrats, view it as a way that can be worked towards. Passeds the legislation by the democrats is viewed as an attack on the Republican Party and a defeat on the Republican Party. Is there a bipartisan bill you are talking about in particular . Caller not exactly. I just wanted to mention that in regards to the nomination obama is trying to put forward. West we will go to bloomfield, michigan, line for republicans. Caller my husband and i, he has made this a determining choice. I am embarrassed as to how the Republican Party is acting. Childrenlike little stamping their feet, i cant have my way. If this was a republican president having the same choice, believe me, they would have acted entirely differently. Its no wonder donald trump is so popular. I might add that im sick and tired of my tax money, namely 176,000, being paid to someone in washington that is hardly ever there. Representatives, we have seen them golfing in florida while they have been doing constituent duties. This family right here, cutting off donations. We will not support anything the republicans do. Host a reminder, the house is coming back from its district work period. At 3enate begins its week p. M. Expecting to hold a vote today on the new secretary of education. Campaign 2016 continues. Tomorrow being a key primary day. You can see governor john kasich. Olding his ohio Campaign Rally time for a few more calls. Baltimore, maryland. Caller i feel the nomination should be looked at, regardless of political parties. I did have a question real fast. This is going to set a precedent. Unlikely, wet is creek. Lly up shits apologize for the language. We will be covering the senate nomination. Tune in, we will take you through all the details and scenarios that are being played out among those who are watching this nomination. Donald, good morning. Caller good morning to america.
