Twitter. Or post your comments on facebook. You can also email us. Well get to your thoughts here in just a minute but joining us on the phone is peeper baker of the New York Times. What is the u. S. Response so far . And what is the president weighing . What are his options . Good morning. Its nice to talk to you. It is a tough situation for barack obama obviously. There are two different distinct issues here as you raised them already. First is for the american side and the european side getting access to the site and getting the bodies out of there sitting in the field many of them still bloated and literally rotting. A terrible ordeal for the families of the victims that only want their loved ones back at this point. The second point is the larger implication. What does it mean for the relations between the west and the rest of the world with russia at this point . The investigation being conducted by american intelligence agencies and others around the world increasingly pointed to russian involvement with the believed as launched the missile that brought down the plane. Given all of that, then, what is what could happen next with the situation between russia and ukraine and the u. S. Response to it . The president slapped a tougher round of sanctions there, europe didnt go along with those. They did something more modest. Europe at the time said we might do something more significant by tepid of july. Well, this changes that dynamic and i think what youre seeing is the american side working with the europeans in the coming days. There is a meeting on tuesday of Foreign Ministers in europe. The fact that a stronger tougher more unified response that will have genuine impact. There is some suggestion that the latest round of sanction combs posed by the administration in washington did have an effect, the very first thing that happened was putin, the president of russia called president obama to complain about it and then from the tone of his conversation and the vemance of his complaints those sanctions seems to have gotten his attention. They were after the crown jewels of russias economy including gas, the bank which is the arm of the energy company. And the oil company. So i think what youre seeing s the americans try to firm up European Response to russias involvement in ukraine. If the United States were to be more aggressive, if that should be the case, what are the options . Its not like theres a military option here on the table or anything. Nobody is talking about sending in american troops to be peace keepers or Something Like that. So i think what is on the table is an economic and diplomatic kind of set of options. So what can you do to squeeze moscow to the point that they recognize its more in their interests to support peace in ukraine than to continue fomenting troubles. And theres a balance that president obama has tried to seek is one that will have ab impact on the rest of the economy and on Russian Companies and leadership without damaging at least too badly the outside worlds economy. So how do you do this without hurting american businesses, without hurting europeans businesses more tied to russia than americans are. Thats what hes been seeking. He did get complaints from american businesses they didnt like that he was doing some of the things that he was doing. On the other hand, you heard from some critics that he wasnt going far enough. So its a balance he has sought but with this in mind. What about secretary of skate secretary of state john kerry is going to make the rounds. Its very important. After the Korean Airline was shot down by the soviets in 19 3, one of the things that president reagan did in response was, the full measure of american outrage what had happened. I think thats one thing that president obama struggles with. Hes a very reserved personality. He doesnt convey outrage very well. He could say some of the same words that somebody else might and yet not come across with the sense of indignation i think that sometimes you want to feel in your leadership in this moment. He is a calm political figure. Sor of give in to sort of emotional kind of rhetoric. And i think thats a challenge for him to try to find a way to channel what americans and europeans are thinking about whats going on right there, right now. Samantha powers his ambassador to the United Nations shes having to be a much more forceful speaker when it comes to condemning what russia has done for instance even if she said some of the same things that the president would say, say on friday, a few hours later, she says it with a certain force i think that conveys genuinely felt outrage by what has happened and that is something that is important i think in politics and national affairs. On the optics here, theres a piece in the New York Times this morning by one of your colleagues critical of president obama for going about criticizing him for going about his daily schedule after learning about the downing of malaysian flight 17. Your front page story this morning before the lengthy piece goes into the time line of when president obama first heard about that. Tell our viewers. He was this is thursday. His plan was to fly to delaware. He was going to have lunch with a voter who had written him and gave a speech about infrastructure then to fly to new york for a couple fund raisers. Before leaving president putin called him as we talked about a minute ago to complain about the sanctions. He followed the phone call with president putin when he learned about the plane. Putin says he had gotten some reports about a plane going down in the ukraine. Very vague about it. Didnt seem to know much about it. Then it became clear that this is a major event. Of course without saying what that phone conversation would have been like had it happened two hours later had the full measure hit people by that point. So president obama did choose to go ahead with his schedule he flew to delaware and new york. He was dealing with the crisis by phone and made comments in the beginning of his speech in delaware but there was a question do you want to be seen having lunch with a voter who wrote a letter on a day when so much tragedy had taken place. More than just the russia thing it was the owe curns into gaza. So it doesnt necessarily look good. E was you dont want to look insensitive toward it. Other president s have struggled with. But they dont want to have their schedule hijacked by events. They dont want to be reactive. On the other hand, they also dont want to look insensitive and remove ages from the leadership a president should be exhibiting in time of crisis. In your experience, in your past, do you think this downed flight change it is equation at all for russia . With the tension in ukraine . Well, you know, a little bit. I think even when we discover about what russia did i dont think they intended for a civilian airliner with people on board to be shot down. They supplied arms to separatists, they were intending for those to be used in military conflict. Clearly the rebels if they did shoot this down, seems to have mistaken it for a military transport planes as one shot down a few days earlier. So this does change the dynamic a little bit. This puts russia on the defensive. You know, russians dont want their brothers in ukraine to be fighting with them and i think this puts a graphic and tragic display of consequences to things going on right now that it creates questions in russia about what theyre doing. But its a society in which sense sor really rules. A society where the kremlin doesnt have to answer to a lot of other Power Centers within the capital. And it doesnt change any for him. Its hard for other actors in the political system to force change in policy. Well, we appreciate your time this morning. Thank you. Thank you. Great talking to you. Lets go outside of washington this morning and get your take. Should there be a more aggressive response from the United States to russia . Larry in washington, d. C. , republican. Caller yes, good morning there should be a more aggressive. The reason this is occurring is because president obama, hes made statements that russia is a Regional Power which is not true. So dictators respond to weakness. 1938 all over again. Youve got to take it in context that the cold war is over. People get sick and tired. Were heading towards a hot war. This is the 100 anniversary of world war one. So were heading towards thermal Nuclear World war three. And looking at germany this is where youre going to see the dynamics. 2014 is the turning point for america and the world. Host theres not a lot of options on the table. What should the u. S. Do . Caller what should the u. S. Do . Develop some balls, develop ome balls and go set forces to let russia know if you continue this there will be repercusions. Talking diplomacy is not working. Turning 1938 all over again. Were host got your point. Going to susan. What do you think . Caller first i had the same attitude as the previous caller. Then i listened to several roundtables and two things stuck to me that i thought they were quite correct about. One is that we lost one u. S. Person. Netherlands lost many times more than that. And havent said anything aggressive at all. First, the nations that were most impacted need to Say Something first and foremost. But secondly rather than rage i think we should use shame and disgust at those who basically just smashed up hundreds of people many of them children. It was so heartbreaking to see the toys on the ground. And i think to take a righteous position and heap shame upon those who did it should be first. And secondly when people call there should be rep cushions they never say what they think those ought to be. Boots on the ground . What are we really talking about . But i can having the world turn their backs and shame them as best as we can would be far more effective in a moral approach than threatening and saber rattling when theres not an awful lot in terms of power that we can really do about it. Host bob from montana. Caller im glad you took my call here. Ive been on facebook for about the last year, yeefandahalf and i have some friends in moscow that ive been talking to. They are apolitical or so they claim. And theyve introduced me to the voice of russia which at that time about a yearandahalf ago there wasnt a whole lot of rhetoric going on as far as the joking about the cleent and then obama and so forth. And then came taking crimea and all of a sudden they were bragging about this is their there was n spot and obviously some real difference that was happening as far as how the voice of russia was portraying the United States. It was more of a joke and they were laughing and it was obvious that putin was more willing to take chances. I think thats exactly what led to this taking down of the airplane was that theyre just kind of doing some braveedo and all of a sudden there was a mistake made. I believe everybody can understand that that they were probably going after a military transport or Something Like that. But nonetheless, it was all based on the fact that they no longer fear the United States. Host so then what should be done . How do you respond . Caller i think we have to show some strength. Maybe if we do war games with poland certainly showing that were moving some artillery into the area, something thats going to show that theres some substantial movement in not just drawing this red lipe that never comes to path. All right. Jack in minnesota. Caller zpworninge. Regarding an aggressive response to this, there are several factors that probably should be considered here. This is an active civil war zone and that active civil war in my opinion was ins gated and fomented by us and our state department. E started the overthrow of yanokovic which started the whole they think. Secondly, were very selective n our response to terrifying tragedies like this. When the kiev government burned alive 42 people in odd esa i dont recall any aggressive responses or any indignation. And were very selective as far as countries like israel which is just, just killed over 300 people in gaza including four kids playing on the beach. We didnt have an indignant response when they bombed our uss ship liberty killing 34 of our people. We didnt have an aggressive response against israel. What do you think the response should be . Caller i think the response should be host to the situation in russia. Caller i think it should be very muted. This people that were hearing from the folks from the fox news watchers saying nobody fears us any more and weve got to be more belligerent i think thats totally as nine. We need to back off the world and its not being an isolationist to back off and not foment civil wars all over the world and to not engage in criminal wars like the iraq war. You know, there should be indignation at us for things like the iraq war where a million iraqis were killed. Host all right. Monica, new york, go ahead. Caller every time something goes wrong overseas they want the president to start a war again. I dont think its fair. Yo hear a voice from europe. These people here with russia theyre fighting and they know they shot that plane down im sorry for the family but the president cannot go there every time and want to start another war. Something has to be dope. Ok. Out of england heres one voice from david cameron. This from putin this morning. Jim in south carolina. Caller it should be the same response as when the americans accidentally shot down that iranian passenger airliner. They didnt know it was an iranian passenger airliner. And if you Pay Attention to what the fellows are saying that they keep playing the recordings trying to find out who is to blame youll note that they didnt mean to either. They knew it was a tragedy when they first did it and figured out it was a passenger airliner. And that has a natural flow. You would have to reeducate the entire american populous of the whole thing has got a natural flow to it and theres not anybody talking about it knows anything other than kicking putin. And putins not going the way of yeltsin and john mcdane and the rest mccain will find that out the hard way. Host the Prime Minister of russia tweeted this out. We will the have a preview coming up here from cspan radio and of course cspan radio reairing all of the sunday talk shows starting at noon. Blake in alabama. Caller caller i believe the blood is on hands of john mccain. He went there fomented it threw gas on the fire instead of finding a solution and there have been nothing but killings after he has been to kiev. Secondly, the neo cons like the previous caller was talking about that surrounded obama, obama doesnt even know what the hell hes doing and theyre fomenting trying to squeeze the ssians and putting selective restrictions on the businesses there. Just like what the nazis did in germany that they had selected jews. Theyre only selecting jews to punish them. This time everybody is getting punished in russia except the jews. Isnt that a coincidence . Well go to james in north dakota. To say its i just want to say one of the things i love about cspan being a conservative guy is to listen to the democrats who are so entertaining just how miserable they are. Host what do you think the u. S. Response should be to russia . Caller there shouldnt be any response. Its probably just an accident and i dont know why its making such 24 7 news cycle. Its a tragedy but people bring up israel, theres that strain of ant setityism. They cant say anything theyve got to find some way to Say Something bad about their country. But the most asnine thing that was said by balm is you may have heard him president obama. They talk mccain has made these points whenever theres something in syria or some other country obama was talking about the territorial sovereignty of ukraine must be preserved. Hes talking about the borders of a sovereignty of a nation thousands of miles away when our own borders have been compromise bid 15 to 250 million invaders and he wont do anything about. Host ill take your point and show our viewers on that news the front page of the Washington Post this morning. Its a piece that the white house has been warned several times over the past two years about the influx of minors coming from Central America and experts in this story saying that the white house considered this a local problem and also says the administration did too long to heed those warnings. So this is a lengthy piece front page of the Washington Post if youre following that story. Also in other news heres the Atlanta Journal constitutions this morning out of georgia. What to extect in tuses runoff. Be watching for that on tuesday. Then also in the New York Times magazine today in their sunday edition, heres the headline. Thats in the new York Magazine this morning. We will go back to your thoughts this morning on the investigation and the downing of malaysian flight 17 and get your thoughts on what the u. S. Response should be. Well go to jim in California Independent caller. Ller i served in iraq and ive seen combat zones and i know how crazy things can get. But what i find really i want resting about all this is that everybody is trying to make it the russians fault before they know what the going on. It makes me think of louis tainia. The shattered glass with the nazis. The narrative sptb being put down in the way thats very conducive to the american ideology. Host jim well go to richard in arkansas. Caller zpworninge. Caller hello and good morning. Itardless of whose fault was, the International Team should have been flown in their under heavy protection, the area secured, and the rebels should have been told straight up any interference will be met with deadly force. You have shot down in International Passenger flight and you will back off from this area until our job is done. This is what should have been done to protect the bodies and the flight evidence, all at once. When we are done, you will leave. But you will not interfere. If putin has anything to say, he can tell someone who gives a darn. This president is a spineless jellyfish i would like nothing more than to see this entire room thrown into chaos. He he has no agenda. He just he is the devils minion. If i may say one more thing. In day he was elected illinois, the pick three numbers were 666. Host there is this headline ukraine says they can prove that russia provided supply systems that felled jet. Also, in the Washington Post, this piece. Russia agrees to the international crash probe. They say the progression militants are hiding evidence and tampering with the crash site. There is also this piece. Liability could reach 1 billion. The question of liability can be izzying, especially when it is the result of violent conflict. The aftermath of the plane crash that killed 298 people on thursday the victims families are likely to seek millions of dollars in reparations. Payouts are virtually guaranteed to approach 50 million. It says that the Airline Company has an Insurance Coverage of 1 billion for it theyre likely to spend all that. Was say the airline fundamentally minding their own business, but they were flying in international skies, 1000 feet above the 32,000 feet claimed as official airspace. And there was no official warning or order for Airlines Flying over ukraine. Several airlines had been downed in that area. It had been widely known that there were military planes downed. The reasonable Asian Airlines were going over this route was the increased fuel efficiency. Essentially, they were doing it to save a few extra bucks. That is a pretty strong argument that they were not doing everything in their power to protect their passengers. Also, in the Washington Post down, a chart of how the faa has reacted after flight 17 was shot down on thursday. Faa expanded an existing regulation that prohibited certain flights from operating in the region. Prohibit mtrictions ost us aircraft traveling through hostile airspace. You can see the chart showing the dark red area. That is where flights are prohibited. The loa areas are potentially hostile. That is how the faa is reacting to that. Lets go to james in texas. Independent scholar. Caller. Caller hello. I would like to talk about the u. S. Stance on russia. We know since the cold war, russia has been a horrible enemy to us. Because of their geographical location, host sorry, we will go on to liz in tampa, florida. Caller why is nobody talking about when russia shut down shot down the polish plane with the polish president and his delegation . So many people died. They just shot down the plane. More, hey are wasting doing the same thing. Nothing is effective. The president purposely is destroying everything. Host all right. We showed you at the United Nations ambassador had to say on twitter. This is what she had to say on friday at the United Nations, addressing mh17. [video clip] initially claimed responsibility for shooting down a military transport plane and posted videos now being connected to the Malaysia Airlines crash. They also boasted about shooting down a plane, but later deleted these messages. Because of the technical complexity, it is unlikely that the separatists could effectively operate the system without assistance from knowledgeable personnel. We cannot rule out Technical Assistance from russian personnel and operating systems. The ukrainians do have sa11 systems in their inventory. Were not aware of any systems in the area of the shootdown. And, since the beginning of this nian airukrai defenses had not fired a single muscle. a la Samantha Powers at the United Nations. Heres politicos headlines. Russia bans congressmen and other americans. The Associated Press is reporting this on politicos website. Russia has placed a u. S. Lawmaker and others connected with Guantanamo Bay and abu ghraib on the list of those banned from entering the country. This is from july 19, from the Associated Press. We will keep taking your phone calls here on what the u. S. Response should be to russia. Lets hear from jonathon next in arizona. Caller good morning. I do think we need more of an aggressive presence there, and russia, ukraine, or crimea. There are people maybe they do it on purpose. Either way, the recklessness that is involved we need to show a presence. Were going to keep a watchful eye over it. If you had a boss and you did something, you would be honest, right . So, whether it was an accident or not, we need to show russia that we are not going to take these things. Russia has shown aggression to the United States. Used have or be used ref investigators in the throws up a red flag. Whether it was on purpose, we need to go there and show them something that cannot be allowed to happen. They murdered hundreds of people. This is something that should not just be swept under the rug. Host politico has this headline from the defense secretary, chuck hagel. Russia continues to isolate themselves. Russia is more isolated than ever after the crash of the malaysian airliner, according to the defense secretary. Theold political capital, pentagon knows that russia has been fomenting trouble in ukraine for months, as well as delivering heavy equipment and other assistance. We should you estimate the power had to say at the United Nations on friday. Here is the Russian Ambassador to the United Nations. [video clip] we place all blame on the kiev government and called for ukrainian side to take decisive measures to suspend this in the future. We may learn more about the danger of the conditions in ukraine. We call for inclusive dialogue. Between all political forces. Crossroads moment, kiev chose the wrong path. Of course, i am talking about the u. S. Colleagues pushed them to escalate the crisis. They are trying to lay the blame for the catastrophe on russia. Ambassador to the u. N. On friday with that damon. Here is the wall street journal. Points to Russian Missile collection and the Malaysian Airlines crash. New u. S. Intelligence assessments indicate that moscow lately provided a russian separatists with sophisticated antiaircraft assistance. Matching evidence put forth by that russiacates was the source of the weapon that shot on the Malaysian Airlines flight 17. They supplied the rebels with systems sa11 aircraft by smuggling that into ukraine with tanks. The systems were moved back into russia following the shootdown of the jetliner. Theyre saying the ukraine charges is an attempt to cover up their involvement. Carolina, north independent color. Caller good morning. I have a small statement. I have been listening to everything that has been happening here. Everyone seems to be so upset with each other. Democrats and republicans are bickering all the time. Ngt the president is doi is the best you can. We need to stop getting into s and peoples busines build our infrastructure. Then maybe someone else will listen to us. They will not invade us if we are going to attack them. Host ok, we will go to lake placid, florida. Good morning richard. Caller it seems that every week we have a crisis with this president. It is not the veterans administration, the lack of jobs, or the economy, or the Housing Market crashing. Every week is a different crisis. There was a recent survey that p citizens as to the honesty and clarity of this administration. That we are lied to on a daily basis from the Obama Administration. It is obvious that president putin and the mideast view obama as weak and inapt. It is a very dangerous situation. Were dealing with a country that has Nuclear Weapons. Where is the u. N. In this . Arent they supposed to take the lead and mediate these types of problems . Host richard, that is what you would like to see . Caller definitely. Until we find out what the facts are and what happened and why it happened. Then, they will fly off the handle. You know, it seems like obama is looking for a crisis or something. Somebody to pick on or prove themselves. They are viewed as inept. I heard on fox news that mexico was shooting at our Border Patrol with machine guns the morning. Looking for a war . Maybe we could fight with mexico and when. I do not know. With this president , i doubt if we could beat cuba. Host we will go on to david in pasadena, maryland. Democratic caller. Caller hi. The last caller has no idea of when, based on his litany of things that president obama did. The jobs, the Housing Market. When you hate him, you hate him. But i would like to talk about his russia. I do know that the republicans at one point were praising putin, what a strong leader he was, what a great leader he was. Now look at him. The thing that we should need to do is to stop john mccain from mouthing off. Every crisis he comes up with is send in troops. He is a weak president. He is a cowardly president. We need to shut him up. Heres reaction from capitol hill to the situation after the downing of mh17. Mark kirk says this. Why did the faa block plates over ukraine . Was shot plane down days before. Udall, werom mark need an independent investigation of what happened. We must hold those responsible for this tragedy. You do not shoot a plane out of the sky at 33,000 feet without some very sophisticated hardware. Andy democratic congressman it is important to not rush to judgment. Those responsible must be held accountable. Mh17 isy pelosi says an unspeakable outrage. Our deepest sympathy with the family, friends, and loved ones. Speaker boehner had this to say. Many innocents were killed today. It is horrifying, and we await the facts. Jim in michigan. What should the u. S. Response to russia be . More aggressive or not . Caller yes, it should be. Without a doubt. I am a vietnam veteran. I think that the United States [beep]o get off their and get back to the john f. Kennedy cuban crisis. He stood up to them and said do it or not. Shoot away. We need to straighten this world out. Not just u. S. A. We need to look to the bible and look in revelations. States,le of the united you had better watch out. The days are coming. Host ok. Georgia, independent caller. Youre on the air. Caller im glad you took my call. I have been waiting for a while. What i would like to talk about is that, all i heard yesterday on the news was about the ukrainian shot down the plane, that was shot down by the progressions. Prorussians. The Prime Minister said that was the biggest crime scene in the world. And that the russians were supplying the prorussians with the weapons to shoot the plane down. When i look at is, the largest war crime crime scene in the world, is not in ukraine, it is in gaza strip, where the palestinians are being wiped out by a country pons fromupplying wea the United States. Host ok, curtis in chicago. Caller how are you doing . Good morning. I was just watching the show. Typically i do not get involved in these kind of things. Basically anything that happens hello . Host we are listening. Go ahead. Caller anything that happens around the world will be blamed on the president. That is just how it is. That is just how it is. I do not know when enough will be enough. People need to let it go. Areeems like the racists just coming out of the closet. Go to gym in oklahoma. Democratic caller. Caller i would like to know this plane started in belgium . Or asia . Crashed in san francisco, did russia send their National Transportation safety board over to investigate . It is nonef, folks, of your business, do you not understand . Let the people involved take care of it. We have got to stop being be worlds policemen. This has got to stop. Right, ifgers on the you are so intent on going to work, pick up a weapon and go fight. Host jacksonville, florida xas. Sorry, chris, katy, te caller i have a comment about mr. Obama and the Poor Administration and policing the world. Basically, whoever fires the next shot is the guilty party. I think obama is going to be all eyes on him and seeing what he does. Bring a sure it will lot to his administration. Russia and ukraine crisis going on it is spread out everywhere. Andst think that mr. Obama his administration should tread lightly and not police the world and corrupted. Int bruce jacksonville, florida. Caller i marvel at all of the information. The senator said that the faa put out a notice. When they were doing the coverage, they put out a notice to American Airlines in april about flying over that area. They have a voice recording of ssian officers that shots on the plane and posted it on facebook. Then, it disappeared from facebook. They said that they shot it down. He supposedly took the black boxes to moscow. And, they are removing bodies, which i think is despicable of anybody to do that. Theres so much misinformation running around about it. And, the internet is treading lightly around having International People go in there. The site is not any good na anymore. They have people looting the site. Theyre not guarding the site. All of this lipservice is just lip service. Ost we go to judy next caller how are you . I just had a comment. Hen romney was president , said that we should watch out for russia. Obama sat there and smiled. I think there is more to the story than has been told to the public. Which is just normal of government. I would also like to make a comment there is a documentary called america, where would the world be without it . It should be a requirement for anybody to go see that movie. Whether you are pink, purple, black, white. No matter what your nationality is. It is a good documentary about where this country is going. I thought it was kind of interesting that it was brought up. Woman who was a millionaire in the United States of america was a black woman. She came out of slavery. Host we will stop you there before we get too far off track. An Early Morning unless angeles, democratic caller. Good morning, art. Art in los angeles . Host you are on the air. Caller i would like to talk about the crisis in russia. Well, um [inaudible] host ok, were going to move onto david. Caller thank you very much for cspan and taking my call. I have heard from none of the callers as none of the politicians. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the lost souls. The first thing that we should say. I think americans have become a country of haters. I am not saying that all americans are haters, but what i have heard in the last three or four years america is nothing but a bunch of haters. You can hear it on this phone calls. You can hear it with politicians. My one politician said thoughts and prayers are with all the families. Host david, i only read a couple of tweets. O our twitter page print we have a list of members of congress. With all of their tweets. You can go through it yourself. Dont take that as evidence of what members of congress are saying. We just showed you a few and there are quite a few on there. Mike in florida, independent caller. Caller i want to comment on the Malaysian Airlines flight. Kind of funny it is another malaysian aircraft. There is a lot of stuff coming out that the Mainstream Media is not reporting. A lot of this has to do with why is this airplane flying off track . Why was it on the crash site . They found all of these passports, not even skate store burned . Scathed or burned. The bodies were already disintegrated and turning to mush. Host we will leave it there. Coming up next, we will be talking to buzz aldrin. Here is the front page of the Houston Chronicle this morning. Fred kaplan on the life of john quincy adams. Q a. At 8 00 on cspan with buzzre back aldrin, apollo 11 astronaut, marking today the 45th anniversary of the first moon landing, lunar landing. Mr. Aldrin, remind the viewers what the mission was of apollo 11. Guest the mission was to carry out president kennedys commitment in 1961, to land a man on the moon and bring him 1970 ely before within a decade full stop i forget exactly the wording. Within a decade will i forget exactly the wording. We can count up. Host two the 50th. Guest yes. Host what do you want to mark the 50th . Guest the next president , until , everyoneclose assumes it will be a democrat. We want the next president to be able to say, i believe this nation should consist should commit itself into decade in two decades to a pioneer planet on mars. Going back to 1969, why was it important that the United States be the first, and how do you feel it has changed the world . Ii, theuring world war germans were the first to come up with a hightechnology walk v2, and had ithe been available a good bit sooner, or had we not overrun in overrun whereot they were launching those records, it could have made a big difference. Because it really tempered london, or great britain. And of course, we came up with the atom bomb in time to drop the last two. There were no others. That was a gamble that president truman made. Released hereto for classified documents of the orders, descriptions of the where the suicide homeowners and all the airplanes that they had held in reserve the suicide bombers for troop ships and the carriers. It was going to be a bloody battle. No surrender. With hiroshima and not the there was nagasaki, an unconditional surrender. But this sputnik came along and surprised us. Why didnt the United States put something in orbit . Sputnik indicated to a lot of nations that we were behind and we had to scurry to catch up. And i believe that is why president kennedy asked his what we can do to beat the soviets. And supposedly, somebody said its going to take 50 years to have a man on the moon. Well, he didnt believe that. Commitment after gegaringeron yuri had flown around. Alan shepard barely into orbit, thats all we could do. 20 days later, he made that speech. , jamesder of nasa wagner, was told what was going to cost. On his way over in the limo to the white house to tell president kennedy what it was going to cost, he took that number and multiplied it by two. [laughs] the first one of major programs that came in on time and under budget. The peak spending in the development of the 20 rocket systems and spacecraft to guarantee at least one successful landing, the peak funding was in 1967 building on up and it was 3. 5 to four percent of the available budget. Host discretionary spending, three percent to four percent. Half 3. 5 and a to four percent. Host what is it today . 0. 5 net 0. 5 and it has been for a long time. Howing on the moon is complicated is going to be and , and ier people feel feel, when they first land on the surface. We will build up their accommodations, their laboratories, there have her cat their habitat before they land. I know a lot of people are going to say, thats not the way we americans do that. I think the chinese would stay there. I think the russians would stay there. On taying guest that is right, they are there for life. Host on mars . Guest right. And instead of justifying why we do that on mars, we will turn around and say, all right, we will bring those people back. Back, they crossed the next people going. The people it trained these people were professionals. And those professionals watched everything those people were doing while they were there, and then they trained the next group. There is not a question when these people come back as to their training the next people. They have already been trained. The question i would ask the skeptics what exactly are you with the human beings, hopefully americans, that the world has spent liens of dollars, the United States has spent liens of dollars of dollarsbillions putting them on the surface of the moon as the pioneering human . Eings the first human beings on another planet, what are we going to do to help defray the ongoing expenses that the world, that the United States, invested in those people . They going to go around and talk to every kindergarten in the country . Are they going to play golf . Are they going to write their memoirs . Life, in my estimation, is going to be miserable. Because that is all they are going to do is talk about it, talk about it. They can do that from mars. Its a oneway communication because of the time difference. But i have yet to have somebody come up and tell me what we would do with the first people that land that would justify the additional expense and time to set up a return system to take with you to launch rockets, the fuel. I have given this an awful lot of thought. I will not be around to be a candidate. But i suspect there will come a when an applicant for an astronaut will sign something to spend thees rest of his life on mars. He can change his mind and we will find another job for him. We have a lot of people lined up to talk to you. The 45thrking anniversary, july 25, 1969, of the first lunar landing. Virginia, kent, youre on the air. Caller good morning, sir. I want to ask you, as far as going to mars, what role do you think private business would play, and what nations would you have cooperate with us to go to mars . And i also want to say i enjoyed your role on the Big Bang Theory and it was very enjoyable. Host guest thank you. The nations that are capable of contributing at first, this will happen first at the moon. We have already been to the moon. We know an awful lot about it. Were we to compete with the other nations, they are less to be theallow us Lunar Development authority that gathers together the other. Ations its very important that we have a working relationship with china. Beyonder earth orbit and , human spaceflight, peaceful ,urposes, it is sort of a trial highly visible to the world, the two nations can work together. July isember that next se 40th anniversary of apollo. Ole use in 1975 that was a pretty warm part of the cold war, with missiles pointed at each other. It was called mutually assured yet, theon, and administrator of nasa will only went to the moon when we went to the moon was a major person behind pushing for this joint mission with the russians. Thinkt think many people that was a mistake. I think it paved the way for more acceptable relations later on. Going back to landing first on the moon, the russians wanted to do that, but they didnt. We gradually caught up with them after mercury and gemini, with all of the things that we did. Uring that it was clear that we were leading them. However, they had the capability of sending one cosmonaut around the moon, and they knew what we were going to do on apollo eight. They did not have the rocket successfully to be able to do that, but it was because of that, that we accelerated the First Mission to orbit the moon ahead of what the schedule was going to be. The first time a cruise on a big rocket, they orbited the moon. Ae second time we ever put spacecraft a crew on a spacecraft, it was a very bold achievement. Host lets go back to that recording in 1969 and hear that famous comment recorded right your colleague, Neil Armstrong. [video clip] the vehicle the eagle has landed. Thermstrong has landed on moon. 38yearold american standing on the surface of the moon. On this july 20, 1969. , it is one small step for man one giant leap for mankind. It is beautiful. Its much like the desert of the heat like the high desert of the United States. Its very different, but pretty. Congratulations. You are cleared for takeoff. [indiscernible] beautiful, very pretty. Very quiet ride. Apollo 11, apollo 11. Buzz aldrin, you were listening to that, smiling, you know, gesturing at a couple of moments. What did you remember . Guest i remember mike collins , when you step on the moon, what are you going to say . Have you thought about that . , he said,n his usual well, i think about it ill think about it when we land successfully. [laughs] host how did he come up with a . Guest i dont know. I thought for a good while that the intelligence person and traveled with us around the , boardfter the flight had beengen, consulted by the crew of apollo eight when on christmas eve, they read from genesis, a very moving decision. I think he was into mental in that. I asked him if he had anything to do with he was instrumental in that. I asked him if he had anything to do with neils words, and he didnt answer. Host here is a tweet. What was it like during an apollo liftoff from her . What did you see and feel . Did you ever feel anything like that on earth . Since then, before, i had lifted off in a Titan Mission in the last gemini program. I think a lot of people had seen movies taken of the shuttle people when they go up, and they are shaking all over. Saturn lifted off so smoothly. We had instruments that told us , andre leaving the ground voice transmissions, but feel it leaving a ground the ground, we both commented afterwards we were not somehow attached to the ground anymore. Hunting ofhe sort of guidance, but if you look at the movies at liftoff, it was so smooth and those engines were moving at all. Host lets go to marion new castle, delaware. Mary, good morning to you. You are on the air with buzz aldrin. All right, let me move on to lidia in woodstock, illinois. Independent color. Caller we have Beautiful Image of the liftoff, except with the challenger spacecraft. I happen to know prior to that launch, that engineers were trying to have that launch postponed. It was postponed several times. They knew that the whole rate was not going to hold up with the cold temperatures. Was reported in the newspaper, probably the chattanooga times. If they knew at the time that was a problem the liddy, why did they that was a possibility, go ahead . Ey those engineers were not being listened to and that launch took place, and that teacher was not the person mr. Reagan wanted her to be. Get aok, lidia, lets response from mr. Aldrin. The action board is by very capable people and they look into all aspects. They have that responsibility. Im sorry to say that to second guess a decision thats made only resistance only raises s that are similar to we didnt go to the moon or there green men here or or the paddle that was illuminated out the window was a ufo. It was not. And yet, people take an inkling of something and carry it on. , buterstand the concern the orings were the cause of the accident. , theysegments of rocket were recovered afterwards. They were dragged through salt water to florida. They disassembled them, string ,hem out, but them on a flatbed saw the wayand they at 40 miles an hour where they put them back into utah and tied them back on, and from that time on, everything close to those segments were treated as hazardous material, even the whole building. I have really never been a fan motorsd rocket associated with human spaceflight. You cannot shut them off once they are started. You have to pull away from whatever the thrust is. And im told that when they blow banghey blow up with a big than hydrogen and oxygen. Anust think it was inappropriate implementation of president bushs vision for Space Exploration after the columbia accident that left us with three shuttles. The Accident Board said the foam did it. We know that means the ice and the foam struck the wing. But president bush said, just finishe Accident Board, the space station. Retire the opera der the orbiter at the end of 2010, because this dangerous mission. We will give you seven years to come up with a replacement. And they said, dont look crew and cargo together on the launch vehicle. I didnt understand what on the launch vehicle meant. I was afraid it open the door to what had been studied of putting the crew on the solid rocket and everything else, and i didnt agree with that. And i told to admirals. Two admirals that i didnt agree, the Accident Board chief, and ahead of expiration of nafta nasa. Host we will go to dan that, independent color. In massachusetts. Caller good morning. I really love this show. Its a pleasure to be talking to mr. Aldrin right there. When i was five years old, i remember the moon landing, asking my dad what is that on tv echo and he says, what is that on tv . And he said, that is a man on the moon, and i couldnt believe it. It changed my life. Buzz aldrin has got to be one of the greatest patriots in the world, with the other nasa astronauts. To risk their lives to get on board these rockets that he was just talking about, the solid rockets. You got to be so brave. Dan, buzz aldrin is saying we didnt have solid rockets, one of thelling you bravest americans. The risen one time when the head of operations brought 30 people into a room and he says, i want to tell you guys that no one who is not in this room right now is going to be on the first landing. It will be from the people here. And i think all of you are qualified to do that and its just going to be determined by the sequence. Now, without going in a lot of detail, 1960 7, 1968, lunar 5 e five 1, 2, 3, 4, was overweight. It was not going to be a lander. The first landing was going to be lunar module six in the middle of october, 1969. It didnt turn out that way because the manager said, i want to reduce the weight on my spacecraft, on number five. He was given approval and he did , and it changed the course of space history. Host at what point did you and mike collins and Neil Armstrong know that apollo 11 was going to be the first landing . Guest it was known when they started deciding, because that clearance for number five had before. Been made i think they flew seven, the first command flight module, and then apollo eight, the first flight around the moon, followed a dressss reversal for herself. Rehearsal. And then we did a dress rehearsal flight in the lunar orbit. Apollo 11 probably would have done another address reversal around the moon instead of landing. Rehearsal around the moon instead of landing. That manager is now a very good friend of mine. Host [laughs] we are talking with buzz aldrin on the 45th anniversary of the landing on the moon. We are marking todays anniversary of the moon landing event, as well as the nasa thementary chronicling apollo 11 mission. That is at 4 p. M. To today. Virginia, go ahead. Caller buzz, very proud of you. It happened on my 20th anniversary from trinity high union ass three reunion. We met john glenn. My son was in a horrible accident and he was so kind. We met his family. God bless all of you. We are so proud of you and we hope all of your work continues. We are very proud of you, buzz, and your whole group. God bless you. Host i look back on my life and my mother was born the same year the Wright Brothers flew. My father was an aviator. I wanted to fly west fly airplanes. I was at west point. I was in combat and had served at the air force academy. I was in germany in 1950 century 1957. We had been controlling the border. But then we switched over to Tactical Fighter with Nuclear Weapons and our aircraft on fiveminute alert. , beep, eat, beat beep beep. It was not a big thing in my considering the conditions, it was a big thing to a lot of other people. Little did i know, that was going to be the beginning of a catchup by night part to switch to being a pilot from being a pilot to being a student who was in space and rendezvous. And eventually, we used some of those techniques to do the first rendezvous. That was after a major decision was to dollo program not earth orbit rendezvous, but a big propulsion station, a big lander. But to be more precise and put everything on one saturn five and do the rendezvous at a distance. It saved a considerable amount of time, money. I believe some of the techniques that i have pioneered since then because of my knowledge of , and orbitsbits between earth and mars that have been vastly improved by students at purdue university, that will be one of the key decisions, i hope, of opening up the access, to usable permanence on the planet mars. Host the front page of the chronicle this morning has this picture courtesy of nasa, a boot print on mars. You were saying before we came on that you took this picture. Uest yes i had a few other firsts, but ive already talked about those two people. It was clear that on such a symbolic mission we had, that the commander should be the one to exit, make that symbolic first step. It just would have been totally inappropriate otherwise. How you and Neil Armstrong decided or Neil Armstrong decided he would go first. Guest we didnt decide. Somebody above us decided. With the workload, the training was on the commander to do some very important maneuvers, liftoff, rendezvous, and the landing itself. The absolute most difficult part of that mission, the landing. Ins was usually the case previous missions. By periments were done and i think the experiments done on the surface of the moon after the symbolic landing should have been more thoroughly gone over and put in my schedule to have done that, relieving neil of the responsibility. He started doing things, and like a loyal follower, i followed him around and we got everything done. Host you have launched a Media Campaign for people to remember ollo 11 with the with apollo45, remembering the anniversary. Why put this in focus . Guest i have a most capable mission director. She is now waiting for the incipient delivery of her second child, logan. Said if it doesnt happen when it is expected, she would like to have them today. She didnt travel with me. Listenede one who had to me so many times as i had gone around to different almost compelling motivation for people to come up to me and say, you do you know where i was when you were on the moon . It was a major achievement. It was a peaceful outcome, a positive. Most remembrances are of tragic events. Pearl harbor. Before going to i was shaving before going to high school. That was a great tragedy that cost many, many lives. The death of people, the assassination of kennedy. The challenger accident, the columbia accident. But apollo first landing, i can tell you the importance of that fade in fade into significance as the first pioneering of human beings to lead hundreds of thousands of years of evolving on the planet earth, and now becoming the first progressive settlers on another planet. That is going to be a major historical remembrance. Just like to remind anyone thinking about becoming , it has aresident very good chance of going down , and i hope this president helps enable that to take place. Host buzz aldrin, we appreciate your time this morning in helping us marked the 45th anniversary of apollo 11. Thank you, sir, very much. Coming up next, we will talk 2016 politics and the potential Democratic Candidates with Annie Linskey of bloomberg. And later, we will turn our attention to iran and todays nuclear deadline. Patrick clawson of the Washington Institute will join us. But first, the long Literary History of des moines, iowa, as our cspan2 or continues on American History tv. Coming up today at 2 p. M. , all of our des moines offerings, including a tour of i was state capital. Iowas state capital. The first Capitol Building of the state of iowa would have been an eye with city. I was became a state in 1846 and our capital was located in iowa city at the time. We moved the capital to des moines in 1857. We chose des moines because of its central location. When we came here in 1857, this building was not built yet. We use the building just across the street called the old brick capital. It served as the seat of government for about 30 years. Our seatso used it as of government while youre building this building. The capital was built between 1871 and 1886. It took 15 years to build this building. However, it was dedicated in 1884 and has been in use since then. It makes sense at this location because it is the highest point in the city of des moines. This is where the last glacier stopped, the last glaciers that came into this area. He created a very large hill on the east side of the river. It was also chosen because it was land that was given to them by Alexander Scott and harrison wyant. They donated about 10 acres to the state of iowa for the purpose of building a capital in this spot. The dome is probably the most noticeable part of the building as you come into the city. There is really not a location in the city where you dont notice it rising up from the landscape. We are the only capital that has five domes. The largest known, the center ise, is 275 feet tall and it covered with real gold. We are what one of 10 gold domed capitals. Host make sure to watch booktv and American History tv this the historye cover and life of des moines, iowa. Joining us now on set is annie , National Political reporter with Bloomberg News. We are talking about Campaign Democratic central and the potential democratic field. You were talking about rhythm nation. What is that . Largestt is the gathering of progressives in the country and is a group that started about nine years ago and has been growing since. There has been a lot of chatter about how big he has gotten since its early days. This is the left of the left. I was sort of joking that its a little bit like the seatac of the democrats. What is their influence like echo how much power do they wield . Guest that was a big question i kept asking. How powerful are they echo democratic electorate how powerful are they . A democratic electorate that seems so united behind Hillary Clinton, and you look at favorability with other democrats, and this might have been a 10 that has not quite embraced her yet. Launching another candidate is hard to imagine, but they really want to push the debate to left and they want to make sure their issues are debated in the primary. Host what are the issues they care about for 2016 . Guest they really care about income inequality. Wallcare about holding street accountable. They care a lot about the issues that Elizabeth Warren talks about. And one of the surprise issues, for me at least, what was immigration was immigration that they care deeply about. Host running Immigration Reform . Guest wanting Immigration Reform and a little bit of disappointment with president obamas response at the border, even Hillary Clintons response with the migrants gathering at the southern border. Host what are they saying, though, about capability and winning in 2016 . Look at the Quinnipiac University poll. American voters backed Hillary Clinton over leading republican contenders. So far, she can beat any republican that is being mentioned, according to these polls. Guest right. I saw that. Thing thatre is one unites the Democratic Party is the Republican Party right now. Basically, the Republican Party is so far on the right that people are not quite willing to walk away. Even if they dont like Hillary Clinton, you get the sense they will still vote for her. But they want to make sure that she has some sort of challenge, that she does not just walk to the nomination. And they want a challenge to be a time for them to really get her, to flesh out her economic plan, and they want to see hoover economic advisors would be. They do not want to see a larry summers. They want to see people who they believe will take a tougher stance on wall street. You mentioned she did not go to the event. Guest no. Host was she invited . Guest she was invited, yes. According to the organizers, she was invited, and declined the invitation. She has gone to these events in the past. You would think this is a conference she will attend after she announces, assuming she does run. Host her supporters were there. Guest yes, the super pac for hillary, they brought their bus. They had one tent in the conference, but they certainly werent the most popular faction there. They were there waving the flag. Sponsored a bunch. They sponsored the food people were eating. People were eating the hillary cap takes, but were not so excited about the hillary candidacy. Host as you mentioned, Vice President joe biden was there. Elizabeth warren was there. How were they received . Guest i will do biden first. President sitting vice , and any time you have the Vice President in the room, there is electricity around that. But he was heckled from the crowd on the image on the issue of immigration. Hit on a lot of different points, but it was not really directed toward his audience the way Elizabeth Warrens was. These are her people. When she got up and spoke, she was hitting on every single issue they care about. One after another, and her speech was punctuated by people chanting run, live, run run and it cost her to stop her speech it caused her to stop her speech and asked everyone to calm down. Show a littleo bit of both of their speeches. Lets begin with Vice President speech in detroit on thursday. [video clip] imagine a country where we are generating phenomenal breakthroughs and renewable energy, where you can plug in a vehicle and go 300 miles, filling up on electrons cheaper than gas, cheaper than natural gas or coal. It is within our power. [applause] imagine where the perpetrators of Domestic Violence are treated and there is no longer talk about it being domestic. Imagine how that changes things. It is within our power. [applause] imagine where a single employer does not have the right to fire someone because of their sexual orientation. It is all within our reach. Imagine fighting for Climate Change instead of hiding behind in difference. Imagine a country where once again, we value work and we work in a commensurate way where the class where the middle class is expanding. Imagine a country where we expand research and not tax loopholes. [applause] imagine a country where we lead not just by the example of our power, but by the power of our example. Host that was Vice President joe biden at the liberal at detroit on in thursday. Let me show you also a little bit of Elizabeth Warrens speech. She was also there on thursday. Here is what she has to say. [video clip] will be cannotn fight for and it will be a hard fight. Companiesy powerful look for every possible way they can to boost their profits, and to boost their ceo bonuses. They try to win more efficient companies. They try to grow faster. They try to beat out the competition. But many of them have another plan. They use their money and their connections to try to capture washington and rig the rules in their favor. From tax policy to retirement security, those with power fight to make sure that every rule tips in their favor. Everyone else just gets left behind. That is what we are up against. That is what democracy is up against. Just look at the big banks. They cheated american families, crash the american economy, got bailed out, and now the biggest banks were even bigger are even bigger than they were when they were too big to fail in 2008. They still swaggered through washington, blocking reforms and pushing around agency agencies. A kid get out with a few ounces of pot and goes to jail, but a big bank laundered drug money and no one gets arrested. [applause] it is rigged. Host Annie Linskey, that was Elizabeth Warren on friday, i should say, in detroit, the day after john Vice President the day after Vice President joe biden spoke. The biggest contrast between those two speeches . Guest she was electrifying for the audience there. She has an authenticity that comes through and really speaks the party. Your question was a good one, does it matter . Hillary,e so behind does it matter if there is an Elizabeth Warren . That there is interest in Elizabeth Warren . You have to think about if hillary does run, she will want Elizabeth Warrens endorsement. Perhapscan see that, being something that will push clinton on her issues. And already, elizabeth is talking a little bit about and already, clinton is talking about income inequality. She did talk about it in a speech this summer, and you have to think that is in part because of this Amazing EnergyElizabeth Warren has tapped into a in that issue. We are talking to the democratic field in 2016. Lets go to glenn in new york, democratic caller. Caller think you for taking my call. Usually, the sitting Vice President is traditionally the one who runs for president in the next election. Im curious why there is why joseph biden is being bypassed, really. I mean, hes being overlooked entirely by Elizabeth Warren and Hillary Clinton. And there is nothing wrong with joseph biden as a potential candidate. I will get off the air and listen to your response. Good yeah, sure, another point. It is traditionally the launching pad to the presidency. I just really think in 2008 there was this choice for democrats. Illary clinton or barack obama and theres a sense among democrats that they want to see glasss tubing ceiling shattered. They want to see a woman elected. That is a problem for biden, and that is what is propelling Hillary Clinton forward. ,ost we will go to new york kyle, democratic caller. Caller good morning. You know, ffled as one of the left of the left, im baffled by the fact that we seem to be sidestepping the idea that we have less opportunity with obama having slipped through our fingers, how we did not energize the left that much and we let the right walk all over us. And now we are going to read rally with new energy to elect the next president that will save the world. Host do you doubt that can happen . Have this energy for another democratic candidate . Think that the collision of events that caused obama to be elected was so miraculous i mean, it was like a once in a generation thing, like electing bobby kennedy. For that to be manufactured without understanding how we let this opportunity slip through our fingers and just kind of moveon and have discussion about how entertaining it will be to president , these are puzzling options to me. Saw hadne thing you meant roots was a lack of enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton. There is one woman i talked to, a young woman wanted two years old, and she said, you know, Elizabeth Warren really speaks to me. I said, o, that is really interesting. I was asking her for her name to include in my story. And she said, i dont want to give you my name, because i think i will try to work for the ready for Hillary Super pac. There was this kind of resignation that this is his our person was going to be. Who our person was going to be. You may there is this lack of enthusiasm for another candidate. And theresfinished not a lot of space for an insurgent candidate like obama to come up. Host this energy that you are seeing, is a translating into fundraising dollars for Elizabeth Warren . Warren hasabeth become she has been in the senate now for less than two years. And if you look at her , it is oneact, pac of the largest democratic leadership acts. Pacs. When she sent out an email for being a candidate, immediately hundreds of people respond. That is why you see her going into red states, like kentucky, or west virginia, to campaign for Democratic Candidates in states that obama lost by double toits, because she is able tap into that enthusiasm and raise that kind of money. 1. 3 from open secrets, her level Playing Field pac. And hillary took in 2. 5 million in the last quarter, which is also a lot of money. And they are limiting their donations to 125,000. The two candidate . Guest running for hillary pack is 2. 5 million in the last quarter. Are 2. 8al receipts million. Is she intruding to the 2014 candidate pac . Guest she is giving to candidates, to the party. They are spreading that money around. You have not seen her aside from the virginia governors race. Do the Democratic Candidates want her to come in . Guest that is a good question. I would assume so. Will would assume that she , and as you get a little closer thehe election, but candidate really doing it is Elizabeth Warren. Host we will take a call. Tom, youre on the air. Go ahead. Caller good morning, ladies. Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, it doesnt matter. I think they both make a good Team Campaign ticket. Bill clinton was his removal of glasssteagall. Bill clinton did nothing but turn to the right and i see the exact same with hillary. Guest that was what i heard over and over again, you know, tying hillary to the policies of her husband. I think shes going to have to distance herself from him in order to capture the progressives. That willthe people be out there staffing the phone banks, knocking on doors. That is something that came up over and over again, her ties to wall street. She was the senator from new york. Look at the clinton foundation, Jonathan Allen and i did a story that showed 29 of the 30 dow jones companies, 29 of the 30 Largest Companies in the United States have given money or participated with the clinton foundation. Of thes to the very top u. S. Industry are tight, and that does create some suspicion. It will be interesting to watch her, as she handles that. Host we will go to john next in mississippi, republican caller. You got to turn the television down, so we dont hear the feedback. Go ahead with your question or comment. Hello . I can hear myself. Host we will go on to the next color. You got to turn the television down. Doug, go ahead. Caller good morning, ladies. Im going to give you a scoop and i do believe it will be the governor of massachusetts to be the next president. Why do you say that . Caller because he is the person to do the job. I love hillary and all, but if hillary were to run, it would be the same as running against the president , obama. Because if she were to run, people would see it as clintons third term in the white house. Hes talking about governor Deval Patrick, the governor from massachusetts. He has very good ties to obama, and to clinton. And he is a really interesting candidate out there. He has said over and over again that he is not running in 2016, but he does have his own super pac, and you do see him traveling around. He is a fantastic campaigner. And hes very popular in massachusetts. He gave came in in the beginning of this populist wave. He was part of this clinical machine and he won by reaching out to voters that they had not reached out to before. He is part of the progressive democrats that parts of the party are really pushing for. He has repeatedly said he wants to make some money. There has been talk, at least in massachusetts, that maybe he. Ill run it may be somewhere down the line. Somebody else that we watch, governor martin omalley. That for the first time when i was at net roots, people brought his name up practically. They really liked what he said andune about immigration that is a sort of softer at thee to the children border. Weeks, then recent white house response and the publics response to this issue. Guest they really liked that he was out there on this issue. Host did he did they like that he was fighting with the president . Guest i think that was a story that the omalley people did a pretty good job tamping down a little bit. It appears there was a little bit of misunderstanding between the white house and between omalleys administration on they will do. Omalley has said he did not want immigrants to come into maryland. In fact, he was saying there was one part of the state there has already been antiimmigration graffiti and that is not the best place. There are other parts of the state that he would like to see some of these kids come in. And Deval Patrick has also been out in front on this issue as well. Host we will go to arizona, independent color. Hi, scott. Caller i just wanted to share one thing, and that is, to only see one way, that is, to look thanght ahead, is easier looking at what mistakes we leave behind. There is a great book out called the president s club, and in one section in their it references president eisenhower and president kennedy and the cuban missile crisis not the cuban missile crisis, but the bay of pigs, that fiasco within the first 90 days. Youve got to get the best people in the room and let them fight it out. Clinton should not be a coronation. We need the best to fight it out to lead our world. Host here in this piece, Hillary Clintons 2016 moves echo failed to thousand eight campaign. They write that shes on track to make her candidacy on her resume rather than vision for the future. This yes, theres criticism that when you look at her vote, it is about the past. It is not these newer things in thee coming up progressive movement, and the Democratic Party. Yes, everything from whether she will be changing her staff and willlittle bit there is aw blood . Question as to whether she is going to open up a little bit. Diane sawyer, in her very first , we arew about the book not sure if that has happened, or come outwill run with a little bit more authenticity that has been missing, and a little bit more vision. Warren buffett has had the same question for her, like, what is your idea going to be . She addressed this a little bit on charlie rose, that there needs to be big ideas and there will be. This this. Their books tend to do better. I was talking to Simon Schuster and for whatever reason, conservative books do tend to do better. I dont know if they read more about politics, they prefer that method, but, you know, i think it just shows there is an intense interest in her and her candidacy will be, you know, something that is going to dominate air waves for a while. Diane, next, a democratic can you recall, you are on the air with Annie Linskey with Bloomberg News caller i have voted 15 or 16 times for president. We worked on Clintons Campaign in ohio but at that time, democrats didnt really consider him a real democrat. I mean they were real behind him but when i talk about it, i want to say right now that if they dont set aside immigration, minimum wage increase, all of these issues, samesex marriage, which is ridiculous, to what we have to do. Hi hillary has to do and i love her and she is brilliant, she had 83 of the vote down in florida in the primary. And she was really begunho but to a lot of the media, they start using these i cant think of the words, but they have to stop this. I am too nervous to talk. What do you think they need to focus on . You said Hillary Clinton and these democrats. What do they need to focus on . The United States and these trade things. All of these, the clothes, we dont make anything in america. We need jobs. They wont concentrate on that. They are asking like thats out. Global trade. Okay. . If we dont if we dont start producing jobs for people and they just stepside step, you know, step aside on this issue. I think thats the most important thing. They wont do it. Okay. All right. Yeah. You know, the caller makes a great point and thats another issue that came up again and again. I talked to somebody there who was a brick layer in indiana and he said, there are 16 vakt occurs. I can tell you they closed down and he believes they closed down because of nafta. He said there is no way i am going to support bill clintons wife after, you know, i look at these 16 factories and like your caller pointed out, you have these trade deals coming um. This is another issue that Elizabeth Warren she hammers on it every single speech to probationives. Her line about it is they are made in secret. The reason that they are done in secret is because if you knew what was in them, you wouldnt support them. So, you know, she galvanizes a lot of support because of her opposition to many of the trade deals. Take a look at danas column today. Elizabeth warren for president he wonders . And he writes in here he was watching Elizabeth Warren at a hearing and after the hearing, he told her stamp that he wanted to button hole her in the hallway and do an interview with her. I wanted to write about the war ten presidency hoopla. We dont do hallway interviews was the reply in the from the stamp. She said she would see about a phone interview but six hours later reported she couldnt make this work. She had been on the floor writing thank you notes while taking turns in the presiding officers chair. They say she is unusual among senators in her refusal to take questions. She is invariabley guarded by staff as she walks about the capitol and the few interviews she has done have generally been on the defined topics, such as her book, where the risk of unanticipated questions is low. Such reticence is certainly not a fault but is the behavior of a lawmaker who plans to keep her head down and to do her job as a legislator, not someone who is contemplating the glare of the national spotlight. Its next to impossible to get her in the hallway, to get her before or after a vote, which is typically when you will grab the senator. I mean he is absolutely right about that, now, i will say if you are in her show state and you go to events, you know, i cover her in massachusetts, and, you know, you can grab her in her home state and get those questions. So, i think there is a little bit of skepticism about the dr. Bavikati media and, you know, i can understand that. You know, i think she doesnt she is very she doesnt want to be caught saying something flippantly off of the cuff that ricochets around to the d. C. Media bubble. I do get that because there is a contrast for when she isnt in her own state. What is the relationship like between Elizabeth Warren and Hillary Clinton, if there is one . Thats a great question. Would there be room in a hillary administration, if there is a Hillary Clinton administration if there is one for an Elizabeth Warren . Wow, you know. I talked to one person who jokingly said Elizabeth Warren for treasury secretary which would terrify wall street, i cant, perhaps more than an Elizabeth Warren presidency but the relationship is interesting. Elizabeth warrens first book, the twoincome trap, her first popular book, she called out Hillary Clinton for switching her position on a bankruptcy bill that Elizabeth Warren had opposed and Elizabeth Warren and Hillary Clinton had met about this bankruptcy bill. Warren had said, look. Its going to make it much harder for families to declare bankruptcy if the bill that is its a bad bill from her perspective. It makes it easier for banks to collect Credit Card Debt and initially, then first lady Hillary Clinton had agreed with warren. But later, when clinton was in the senate, clinton voted to support a similar piece of legislation, and warren really called Hillary Clinton out on that in her first book. She was very angry about it and, you know, its worth going back and reading if you are interested in these two and their relationship. But in her second book, in her more receipt book, Elizabeth Warren tells the same story, but this time, she leaves out the fact that clinton flipflopped and its very interesting because it shows that Elizabeth Warren, she is willing to play ball a little bit and she is willing to hold her fire. And thats what she did in her second book. We are talking with Annie Linskey from Bloomberg News about the potential democratic field for 2016. Ron, you are up next, independent caller, go ahead, ron. Caller i would like to go ask ms. Linskey was that truly Elizabeth Warren make that speech in detroit or was that a reincarnation of huey long . Host host what are you talking about, ron . Caller it seemed to be demagogry of an extreme populist nature. Host host have you switched parties, voted republican, voted democrat in the past . Both. Host as an independent, what do you not like about Elizabeth Warren . Caller it seems to me that shes just obsessed with problems in our economy that are really not the real problem. The problem we had with the economy, i certainly will not excuse the behavior of the banks, but there were other proble problems, macro he can no, maamic problems that brought that crisis about. Host host there is angindependent. You need independent to win. Guest you know, if she is. Host host would she . Guest i think she would have a problem being elected. If she was thisdrantic nominee, you know, that kind of rhetoric, twhiel it does electivefy and exciting one part of the democratic base, it absolutely turns off, you know, many, many other segments. Thats why you see republicans, you know, using her in an add when she does go into these red states and saying, look who is being tie today liberal Elizabeth Warren. Although, its really interesting. Late last week, i think it was on friday, the Heritage Foundation did reach out to Elizabeth Warren to see, you know, the conservative Heritage Foundation, to see whether or not she would support them on, you know, ending the export import thing, to see if they could find some sort of alliance between sort of far right and the far left. Elizabeth warren did not, you know, she doesnt accept their position, but i think in washington, its really interesting to look for these areas where the far left and far right might go together. We will go to connersville i think what you are doing is great for our cause because you believe in the common man. We need to step up the game on the other side of the aisle because fox news, the plutocrats channel, we need to fight back with everything we have got. Gary, what energizes you about 2016 . Is it the processing expect of a republican president or the field of potential democrats that you are seeing right now . Ty vote for bernie sanders. I think he is the right man for the job. Just anything that is toward the common working people. All right. Our country, too. All right. Bernie sanders . He wasnt there. I was a little bit surprised because it felt like he was there. So many people were mentioning his name. You know, i mean he is not a democrat. You know, he would have to, you know, he is an independent and so people were hoping he would be a democrat and would run. I think one of the dangers some mentioned playing a spoiler role that ralph nader did before and ross perot has done. There was this discussion that we want somebody to run against hillary. We want to be talking about these issues. Maybe it will be bernie sappeders if not an Elizabeth Warren. Tomorrow on the washington journal, we are going to be taking a look at the republican field for 2016. So, if you are interested in that, tune in tomorrow morning, 7 00 a. M. Eastern time is when we kick off the washington journal seven days a week here on cspan. Tina, independent call, hi, tina. Caller good morning. Host host good morning. Caller great. Yeah, i am paying attention and as far as i am concerned, i thought sanders was the first for an independent and as far as warren, warren is, you know, just obama all over again. And under this administration whom i voted for, it seems that, you know, paid for the tarps protocol much that we want to wall street. There is more now than when obama came in. I dont think i am going to redo that and i am not for socialists and communists. My dad just died who fought in world war ii for the real Democratic Party. I think its been hijacked. Thats why i am an independent. I wont vote for either one of them. I may abstain and i may swing. I dont really know. Host host caller not Elizabeth Warren. Thats for sure. Host host what about the sentiment of the old Democratic Party versus this new one which you ta talk about a little bit. Guest there are some people who are trying to look at the tea party for cues about how to change their party, how to shake it up and shake some of the older ideas. It will be i dont know that they are there yet, you know, you look on the right and various faxes are spending millions of dollars against each other. I mean it is indeed a civil war on that side. You dont see thhappening on th left. Although, everyone i talk to says, look, there is one person who has started a group and they are running progressive candidates against democrats in primaries and so they are using the same pump at least on the local level with some success, you know, on the local level. So, i think, you know, because the republicans are viewed a so extreme by the left at this point, you know, they are not at they are sort of papering over the differences on the democratic side but i think that those differences are certainly there. And they are certainly bubbling up. One last phone call. Sue is a democratic caller. Caller how are you doing . I think hillary is the only democrat that, you know, the others are just waited too late to get in the name. I dont know their names or anything about them when you do mention these potential Democratic Candidates to run against her. I think you under estimate the fact that bill may have been this and bill may have been that, but i think the country would love to have him back even if he is in there as the first man, i dont know how that would be. We never had a woman president. Elizabeth warren is great, and i have to agree with the first lady in florida the main issue in the one that no one wants to talk about forget about anything else. Trade stuff. You know, there is nothing made in america. Indonesia, china, hobby lobby, all their religion but they lie in bed with china because 98 from china comes from overseas and then they call themselves religious. Host host lets go to the beginning part of the comment where she is just saying, i havent even heard of these. They havent gotten in. Its too late. Its july 2014. Guest she is right. The bottom line, poll after poll after poll shows Hillary Clinton with just a massive amount of popularity. I really like that she mentioned bill clinton and how popular he is. He has been, you know, he has been out there. He was out there campaigning, boosting popularity tore barack obama in the last election. In 12. He is an incredible asset. Can be an incredible asset and somebody who democrats still really, really love. So, you know, i think i think that is, you know, when you look at what a general election would look like in 16, i mean those that couple has a huge amount of support on the democratic side and, like you said, even when shes going head to head with republicans right now, she is winning. I am sure that will change when, you know, there is an actual election going on. But, yeah, they still have a lot of support. Host host Annie Linskey, you can follow her report okay bloomberg. Washingt washington journal continues. Our guest, Patrick Clausen with the Washington Institute, Near East Policy Research director, thank you for being here. Welcome. Thank you for having me. Lets begin with the headlines. The iran and six powers agree to a 4month extension of nuclear talks. Why . I think they got close to a deal. They think there was a few more months to iron everything out that they can actually work out a deal. I am not sure that will happen. But its certainly worth a try. Why does this administration feel they are close to a deal . What are the signs . They have agreed about certain issues did he have did he have c. Hopefully iran is going to go ahead modest changes. Two of the big issues about on the table have been resolved, and probably two others, although they are keeping quiet about that. Just leaves two more to be worked out. Whats been resolved . What are the two big issues that have been resolved . The iranians are building a reactor in a town called arak, easy to confuse with iraq and they have agreed to modify that reactor that will reduce the amount of plutonium that it produces. Plutonium being one of the two things you can use. They are still haggling about whether iran will modify it so it only makes one kilogram a year or two kilograms a year. But a lot less than nine kilograms, plus, that it would have made unmodified. And they have also agreed that a site called fordo, which is underneath a mountain, a place where iran was planning to enrich uranium in a way that could not be easily destroyed in the event iran walked away from a deal and was trying to break out quickly to make a nuclear weapon. Iran has agreed that will be a Research Facility in which there wont be any large number of centrifuges working and probably has agreed that those that will be there how you enrich u rannium will not enrich uranium. Whats left to negotiate . The the two big issues left to negotiate is how many centrifuges iran will have in the main facility and how long this whole agreement will last. Secretary of state, john kerry wrote a piece, an opinion piece, in one of the major newspapers a couple of weeks ago saying this deadline will not be extended. Now, they have extended it. What the are the implications of that . Well, when the deal was first announced last november, when it we into effect in january being b cabdid, Administration People said it will only be as we get close to the close to seeing what the parties are. The deadline, artificial as it may be is useful mechanism for forcing the negotiations forward. It does appear that in the last week or so that we got a lot more clarity and that we got a lot closer to what is looking more and more like its going to be a very modest deal. If deadline are part of the negotiations, are extensions also part of them . Absolutely. Absolutely. I do thing that it will be hard to have a second extension. Given the kind of domestic political dynamic in iran and in the United States that we have seen about these negotiations an especially about this first extension. Do the sanctions that are in place right now stay in place over this next over these next four months . 0, indeed. The sanctions that are in place now are very likely to stay in place for a lot longer than that because it is a deal where we would have to see some evidence iran is actually implementing the deal before we would begin modifying the sanctions. In many of the sanctions, they are in place because irans support for International Terrorism or because of irans human rights violations. And so as 340 members of the house wrote the president earlier this month, mr. President , you have been talking being lifting nuclearrelated safrnthsz, but there are no sanctions that are only nuclearrelated. The sanctions are for a whole host of things irans doing. So, when i say this is going to be a modest deal, irans only going to do modest things and the United States is only going to give very modest relief to sanctions. Who has the upper hand . Well, the great concern about american by americas allies, the middle east, ostensibly ibbly the saudis, at the end of the day, this deal is not going to make thhat much difference, will continue with its disturbing activities in the region. On the other hand, Obama Administration says it will be a step forward. John, lets get our first phone call in. John is a republican. Go ahead. Good morning to you. Caller hi. Good morning. How are you . Host host good morning. Caller hey, listen. At th i was reading a Research Report and it was anouncing that the russians are signing a Major Nuclear deal with iran and to finance and supply u rannium reactors and the russians will do the same for china and then syria. And, you know, i am a control engineer. I did some of the financing for or some of the equipments that went in to the Nuclear Reactor that we sent to north korea when Donald Rumsfeld was on the board of directors of abb. And i think that this Foreign Policy and hogemeny you are talking about is making america look like fools around the wo d world. I am not an antiinterventionist, but i really, really kind of have problems withantiinterven really, really kind of have problems with with the narratives that are strung so far from the truth. Host host okay. Dr. Clawson . Guest four u. S. President s from mr. Carr ter through mr. Clinton opposed the construction of Nuclear Power plant in iran and we found very little sympathy around the world for that position. So it was mr. Bush who changed the u. S. Position and said that we would be willing to see iran have a Nuclear Power plant if its under proper controls and that we have concentrated our concerns about irans efforts to make the nuclear fuel because that process of enriching uran annually for fuels is the exact same machines you need to make uranium for a bomb. So while i am quite agree with the caller that Nuclear Power plants pose quite a risk of proliferation and give people a way to make Nuclear Weapons disturbingly easily from those power plants, frankly, we havent gotten support around the world. Not even our allies, israel who are quite nervous about Irans Nuclear intentions are focused on the Nuclear Power plant. They have also focused on the enrichment and the plutonium. So while i am sympathetic to what our caller is saying, we have not been successful in making the case here is a tweet from a viewer. Are inspections in centrifuges the critical issue . Guest the Inspection System is an issue. The iranians are unreasonably ince insisting the inspection should be done the same way when the nonproliferation treaty was written 50 years ago. Thats to say that literally, these cameras record on tape. Somebody has to fly out every two months and recover the tape. And you would think in the modern world that you could replace this with a system of realtime uploading to the iea headquarters in ve en in a but the iranians are unreasonably resisting that. We havent made too much about that. The centrifuges is a big issue, the number of centrifuges. Host host mario, democratic caller in connecticut. Caller good morning. I have a comment. The iranians offered to help the United States and iraq with the situation with isis. And now we have the United States saying that the only reason they did that was because they would want to have concessions on the nuclear talks. However t the bigger picture, iran has the superior ground force than ours and they would be able to help eliminate isis, then by not doing this, we are em bolstering that group and it could lead to them take okay like the state of israel, surrounding all of israel and taking them on. Thank you. Host host thank you. Patrick clawson . Guest the iranian offer to help with isis is an offer to arm, train, finance the viciously antisunni militias in iran that have been so effective in driving the sunni population into the arms of isis. And so what irans proposing to do would be terribly counterproductive in that it would drive together the sunni population and these extremists in isis whereas the only way isis can be defeated is if we can make this not a sectarian conflict and we can drive a wedge between the isis and the great majority of sunnis. So what iran is proposing to do where it says we are going to help mr. Almalaki is to bolster almalakis worst instincts making this into a sectarian conflict and would make the situation in iraq much worse. Host host john, sterling, virginia, democratic caller. Caller i want to ask the guest. Pakistan one day were having nuclear issues. The United States and other countries, they were calling that pakistanians are not capable to handle nuclear issues. And now, we have seen the indian pakistan, the power of the battles. The reason i called, it wasnt that. The reason i called is president Jimmie Carter mentioned bi iran issue on his when he say that even if they have a one nuclear bomb, there is nothing they can do about it. I mean we were trying to protect israel. We are israel has more nuclear bomb than iran. Why do we let them do what they want to do if they if they want to use as they say, energy purpose . Why we have to go sanction them and punish them . Why dont we just tell them, okay. This is what you want to do. We are going to monitor what you are doing and let the chip fall where they might. Host host okay, john. Guest president obama made clear his great concern is if iran isability ignore the restrictions in the you dont know proliferation treaty, build Nuclear Weapons, that many other currents trees will do the same. So his worry is that we would see five, 10, 20s additional countries. For instance, even in the middle east. The saudi king has told american officials bluntly that if iran builds Nuclear Weapons, so will saudi arabia and what we have heard from e job descriptions and turks is that if the region starts to become nuclear, so, too, will they. And then, that becomes a grave concern that can we hold together a system thats limited the number of countries with Nuclear Weapons . The caller mentioned pakistan. Pakistan, india, north korea are the countries that have remained outside of our system for limiting the spread of Nuclear Weapons and then, unfortunately, all of them develop Nuclear Weapons. But that was not good for the world peace. However, it would be much worse if a country like iran thats a part of this nonproliferation treaty system were to develop Nuclear Weapons. Host host is it possible to keep Irans Nuclear ambitions in this check when you write recently in a piece, iran can afford to say no to a nuclear deal . Guest we cant put pressure on them. We are going to have to find other means of leverage as well. Economics can play a part but we are going to need to have political leverage and, frankly, i suspect the threat of the use of military force if iran were to cross over into actually building Nuclear Weapons, it has to be part of that package. Host host david sanger writes piece for the New York Times behind president obamats exte extending it for four months is a installation the administration has to mix of pressure incentives just about right, keeping the most da damagingsations, a deal is possible. Congress, and some Nuclear Experts pushing for a harder line disagree. It was overwhelming sanctions. It was the overwhelming sanctions and covert action against Irans Nuclear program that brought the country to the table, they argue. To get a final deal, they contend, the formula is simple more sanctions, more pressure and behind it all the lurking threat of military action. President obama has several times told interviews that he is firmly sper waded that president obama wol use military force if they were to proceed towards building a nuclear weapon. I am afraid many in the irani iranersh iranership, like the Supreme Leader who a little over a week ago said, nobody believes the United States would ever use military force. And if, in fact, obama is correct that and the use of military force is a credible element in the mix, then surely that would strengthen the u. S. Hand. Host host florence, kansas, jeremy, an independent caller, you are on the air with Patrick Clawson go ahead. Caller thank you for cspan. I want to ask two questions. The premises of my questions have to do with. Host host jeremy, are you there . Jeremy in lawrence kansas . Lost him sorry about that. Hopefully he can call back in. So what are you watching for over the next four months as these talks continues . The deadline was today, july 20th. Its been extended for four months. What are you watching for . Guest the unity of the six countries that are negotiating with iran is an important element persuading the iranians that they have to compromise. So, its important that the Administration Fully involve the europeans, the russians and the chinese in this process. And there has been, at times, the Administration Acting as if this is as u. S. Rannian negotiations and to watch, clap on the side. In fact, the russians and chinese have for their own reasons taken a pretty firm stanchion in favor of nonproliferation. For one thing, the iranians are claiming they need to have centrifuges because they cant trust the russians to provide fuel if the russians that the russians are contractually. The russians dont like being told they are untrustworthy. Involving the other powers, what are called the p 5 plus one, in this negotiating process would be an important indication that we are putting more pressure on the iranians. On line for republicans, markus in longwood, florida, good morning, marcus. Marcus, you are on the air. Go ahead. Caller yes. Why the questions dont the talks dont work out . Yes. Guest a very good question. I must say the Obama Administration has many strengths, but having a plan b is not necessarily one of them as we saw when the israelipalestinian talks didnt work out. The administration didnt really have a plan b there. So, that, on these negotiations, there is really not a whole lot of clarity from the administration, and i dont think there is a lot of preparation for what would happen if the talks dont work out. Ca the great concern is if the talks dont work out and iran resumes its Nuclear Program fullbore, that that will be a very dangerous moment if the United States doesnt act. I mean to take one example, there is extraordinarily political consensus in israel if the iranians proceed to fuel this reactor at araq that i mentioned earlier that theisitionis will do the same thing that they did the last two times that people in the middle east started tore got ready to fuel a reactor like that. Isra that was in syria in 2005 and in iraq in 1981. In both cases, the israelis bombed those plants. So, it will be a very dangerous moment if these talks break down. Host host if the talks had not happened, where would we be . Guest there is no question if the iranians were getting ready to fuel araq, the israeli would have bombed it. What would have happened about the sentence trifuge facilities, not as clear. Not as clear. But there social would have been an international mood that said that irans at fault for the talks and not happening and under that situation, then a military strike by the israelis is more possible. The israelis cant act unless there is a context in which the world blames iran for the breakdown of talks and so, only if the talks break down in such a way that it looks like its irans fault could we be talking about military action. Our guest is it Patrick Clawson. He is the Research Director for neareast policy. Jeremy you are on the air in lawrence kansas, independent caller. Caller yes. Thank you very much. I wanted to ask mr. Clawson about a statement that he made last year having to do with the potential policy issuance of covert action using false swag operations and i want to ask, since that time, we have actually seen false swag operations in ukraine, snippers shooting both sides, this last in concerns into gaza by the Israeli Forces where its premised on a false swag operation. The israelis knew that the three teenagers were not kidnapped by hamas. They knew that the kidnappers were speaking heb rew. Host host jamie you how do you know that . What evidence do you have on that . Caller there is recordings on the internet of that call. And the police held on to the recordings for many, many days. They knew. They had found the teenagers dead. They knew those teenagers were dead. So again, this is not an unusual thing in history. Mr. Clawson outlined a century of false swag negotiations to initiate military action. My question for mr. Clawson is whether this entire relationship with iran in terms of these alleged Nuclear Programs is actually a false swag extension of the state Peace Process put forth by the elements in israel in relationship to the palestinians such as those people who created the odedunon plan and the clean break plan. Host host jeremy, i think we have your point. Mr. Clawson guest there is the 911 truthers who said i advocate false flag and that will extending the United States that the military prefers not to start them on their own and waits until its been attacked before the United States feels it can use force in response. Now, i incite pearl harbor as an example. You might think pearl harbor was a clear case of the japanese attacking the United States, but our 911 truther describes this as one of the false flag operations that i site as if the United States attacked pearl harbor on its own in order to start world war ii. I dont think so. And similarly, i site a number of other examples where the United States only uses military force if its been attacked first. And i said that i suspect that that may also be true in any con residents tation with iran, that om of the iranians were silly enough to follow through on their threats to attack u. S. Air craft carriers when they go into the gulf and the like action then under those circumstances, the United States might be prepared to use force but that unless iran attacks the United States, its going to be hard for a president to explain why we use force. Host host whats your name . Badzad. Host host go ahead. Caller my question is. This. I am from iran and i knew i grew up in a country that was very proamerican. As a matter of fact, i went to school in iran that was built in 1903 by jordan, a very well known school. The history from 1953, the military coup in iran, what ran really wanted was respect and treated like equal like every other country on the face of the earth, not different rules for different countries. And i disagree with the speaker that it was saying that when iran get a Nuclear Power, new orleans plant other country going to do it. Its domino effect. Materialize can like vietnam. Not here either. We make one country, what are they going to do with it . We never have one bomb. We are going to do anything with it . Drop someplace else . Maybe a little bit or are suicidal. Host host caller, do you disagree with administrations strategy so far and an extension of the deadline . Caller i agree with that. I think this is a good idea to extend as long as they talk and not bomb each other, thats a good sign. Host host Patrick Clawson guest i would agree its unlikely they would build one but more likely they would build an ars naldz but building these facilities that would let it build al bomb every two months. John kerry said two months. I believe probably six to eight months to get one bomb. They could make additional ones every two months. So iran is building an infrastructure which is capable of producing an arsenal of bombs and furthermore, they have been for years testing missiles which are very well designed to carry these bombs. So, it looks like what iran wants is to have came abilities of being able to produce arsenal of bombs that it can put on missiles. You would say it could be a small arsenal. What would they do with it . The answer, unfortunately is al mistake, typically after a war ends, one is sorry that the war started. So the concern is that if iran had Nuclear Weapons that a crisis might escalate. People might miss calculate. If we are here now at the 100th anniversary of world war i and when arch duke ferd and in was short in 1914, the one thing everybody agreed on was this cannot be allowed to lead to eternal war in europe. Thats what happened. Millions of people died. The worry is that if iran had Nuclear Weapons that they would miss calculate. Just as form, they have frooelt miscalculated what would be the effects of their policies elsewhere. I think for instance of the attempt to kill a saudi ambassador here in washington, d. C. That was a really stupid thing to do. And thank god it didnt proceed. It wou it would have hurt irans interests as well as being a hanous terrorist act. Iran has a history of miss calculating and the worry is if it got Nuclear Weapons it would do that again. Doug brooklyn massachusetts, democratic call. Caller yeah. I heard it remarked that the Washington Institute for the near east policy has a close relationship with the american israelis Political Affairs committee. I would like to hear your guest deny that. If Israel Attacked iran, would the United Nations security counsel chapter 7 resolution, and it should be sanctions, how does he feel with it . The question. Thanks. Mine organization has no afill ation with apac. Its a matter of record that some of the people who initially funded our organization, a group of approximately 300 donors, some of them also game money to apac. But most of our donors do not give are not active in apac. There is no organizational times asked question of what would be an impact of an israeli strike, when israel struck the iraqi reactor in 1981, the United States was furious and condemned this bitterly. Years later, the United States was greateful for what israel hd done because it put an en ends let me modify that. It set back iraqs pur suited of Nuclear Weapons in such a way that iraq did not get Nuclear Weapons. Has been the history of the israeli strike on the syrian facility. In fact, that strike was not kong determined by a single arab country other than syria because arab countries realized it was really dangerous, stupid for the syrians to be building that facility. So, its a question of context, and if it looks like irans seriously negotiating limits on its Nuclear Program, there would be widespread condemnation if israel used force, but if it appears those talks have broken down because its the iranian intrans sequence which is preventing talks, there would be much more understanding if israel acted. The attitude might be, its a shame they had to do it. Host host barbara in missouri, democratic caller. Good morning, barbara. Caller good morning. So my question is why is it that the United States is always supporting israel to bomb other nations afternoon them. Why is it that its okay for israel to be so threatening to everyone around them but they are so afraid of everyone . And why does the United States support this . Host host barbara, why do you take issue with it . Caller because its wrong. Its wrong to say we are going to label the iranians and they should be controlled by israel and the United States. Host host lets take your comments. She believes the United States is doing this for israel and had you do you respond to that . You see he spent a lot of time and effort on stopping the proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Its something thats very near and dear to his heart. Its something his aides complain about he spends too much time on. So, therefore, for him, this question of an iranian threat to undercut it is a personal issue. In the senate guest this is an issue he cares. He is not involved because of israel. I like to point out to people that the country that, in fact, takes the firmest stanchion about the Iranian Program is france. And france is not doing this out of love of israel. France is not doing this because of the strength. Jewish lobby in france. France is doing this because they care deeply about this question of proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and thats really whats driving it. Now, its true that there are current trees around the world that had have Nuclear Weapons and most of them have pledged they will eventually get rid of Nuclear Weapons, including the United States. The israeli position is that they look forward to where the zone is one of trust and its not necessary for them to have Nuclear Weapons. But frankly, its really hard to get there. I think what we should work on is reinforcing what weve got, which is a nonproliferation treaty thats been that committees all countries except those 9 not to make Nuclear Weapons. Its irans efforts may seriously undercut that treat. Where is irans technology . At what stage is it at . Iran has got the Technical Expertise needed to make the material for a bomb, and actually making the bomb is not as hard, once you have that material. You can have a crude bomb like the one we dropped on ir0 shima which we had never tested. We were so certain it was going to work, we decided to use it rather than the more sophisticated design that we had tested and we later used in nagasaki. Iran almost certainly has the technology to make a bomb. Not as clear how easy it would be for them to put it on the missile i mentioned earlier. It would appear iran has done quite a bit of work on whats called the possible military dimensions by the International AtomicEnergy Agency is one thing we want to have clarified. Marsel on our line for republicans. Caller i wonder if you would comment on the edit solar that secretary kerry made in the New York Times some months ago with one other writer regarding the fact that they made that iran has no real use for Nuclear Material in terms of what they say they do because its much, much cheaper and much less expensive for them and their nation to buy it to the commercial market and to go that route rather than the route that they are taking now. Guest the great majority of countries that have Nuclear Reactors, in fact, buy the fuel from other country tries. We in the United States, for instance get about half of our fuel that comes from russia. Its bleinlded down old Nuclear Weapons. The iranians say they need to be able to make fuel because they cant trust the russians. Frankly the russians have been pretty good suppliers to us even though there are tensions in our relations. The caller understates the case because en if the iranians were to make fuel, they dont know how to turn it in to the fuel rods that would go into the russiandesigned reactor. Thats a pretty complicated process. In fact, u. S. Companies say its not clear they could make fuel rods to go in the russia reactor because each reactor is so unique and has such specifications only known to the manufacturer of the reactor that its really very hard to refuel them. I will try to get in frank here who is in florida. Democratic caller. Can you make it real click . We are running out of time here. I believe that the holocaust was real and israel wants everybody to remember that holocaust, which is fine, but where were they during at a time killing fields . And i washed that video of the two israelti policemen beating guest we have seconds left he here. Do you have a question . Caller yeah, i want i just want to make a comment that i seen was swastiks on their uniforms. Call guest i think we should hold issis to the same standards but not Higher Standards beat vingz occurred from time to time in the United States. Host host lee lets remind our viewers this has been extended. Where is this taking place and what will they be trying to iron out over the next four months . Until ve en in a, the iranians negotiating with whats called the p5 plus one, the permanent five members of the u. N. Security council plus germany and aver a brake in august because the europeans said we are not having them in august. We have to have our vacation, they will try to figure out the last elements which have been the difficult ones. Patrick clawson, we appreciate your time.
