Well have a political roundtable. But were going to talk about when the Biden Administration blocked oil drilling in alaskan wild life refuge heres the front page of the thursday journal. They canceled drilling leases and well get into this article in just a minute. But we want to get your view on whether or not we should be drilling for oil in the alaska area. 2027488000 if you support the Biden Administrations position on blocking the oil drilling. And if you are opposed to what the administration did, 2027488001 is the number for you to dial in on. And as always, if you cant get through on the phone line, try the text number, 2027488003. Please include your first name and your city and you can see there, all sorts of social media ways of contacting us via facebook, x or instagram. Just remember cspanwj is thehandle for that. Interior Department Secretary deb holland authorized cancelations of seven leases held by alaskas stateowned Economic Development agency, the Alaska Industrial development and export authority in the remote Coastal Region that sprawls more than 19 million acres bordering canada to the east, to the north. From day one, she said, i have delivered on the most ambitious climate and conservation agenda in our countrys history, President Biden said in a statement but theres more to do and my administration will continue to take bold actions to meet the urgency of the Climate Crisis and to protect our lands and waters for generations to come. Statements by secretary holland of interior with Climate Change warming, the arctic more than twice as fast as the rest of the planet, we must do erything within our control meet the highest standards of care to protect this fragile ecosystem. The steps we are taking today furthered that commitment based on the bes available science and in recognition of the indigenous knowledge of the stewards of this area to safeguard our public land for future generations. Allan in queens, what do you think . Caller im totally in support of it. This all hinges on whether Climate Change is real or not. Now, even me without a scientific background, al gore said it was real decades ago. Eminent scientists and scientific organizations say its real. Theres physical evidence, you know, the glaciers melting and the temperature of the earth is getting higher. Everything leads me to believe that Climate Change is real and Carbon Emissions is something that we have to get away from. In the short term, i could see why people are aggregated and they aggravated and they make a living from it or whatever. But in the long term picture, when you and i are probably six feet under, theres going to be no such thing as a gas car. Its all going to be electric. Clean energy is the way to go and i totally support them. Host this is david in south carolina. What do you think of this decision, david . Caller well, i think its going to hurt the poor people. This is what, you know, the places of food and the Grocery Stores are going to go higher and higher and higher. What are they going to do . Theyre going to offer these subsidized housing throughout the country and buy i dont think so. I mean, look at ford. They lost like 4 billion on e. V. Theyre just sitting there. Nobodys buying them. They dont want them. Host thats david in south carolina. Heres a map of the anwar. The Arctic National wild life. And about seven billion barrels of oil is estimated to be in this area here. Right next to it is the National Petroleum reserve alaska and this is all on the north shore of alaska above the arctic circle. Well read a little bit more about how this is affected, how the National Petroleum reserve is affected as well in just a minute. Next call is jim in hudson, florida. Hi, jim. Caller yes. The Biden Administration want everything to go electric. Theres many vehicles on the car on the road every day, you know, fedex, u. P. S. , amazon. Why dont they first of all, make a good example, have all the little mail trucks electric . I would think that those vehicles, theres more of those vehicles on the road every day monday through saturday, any other vehicle. Why doesnt the government go ahead and make those mail trucks electric . I like to find out that reason why. Thank you. Host thank you, sir, for calling in. Back to the Washington Times on thursday. Haaland determined that the Trump Administrations lease sale were seriously flawed and were based on fundamental legal deficiencies including insufficient analysis under the National Environmental policy act and the absence of an analysis on Greenhouse Gas emissions. 2017 republican law under President Donald Trump required leases for drilling in the anwar reversing decades of protection for the oil rich region. A judge last month rejected the development and export authorities lawsuit against the biden executive order halting the leases, ruling that the administrations decision to seek further legal analysis was legal. The interior department on wednesday also unveiled a new regulatory rule to prevent new drilling across 13 million acres of alaskas 23 million acre national pet plum reserve situated west of the National Wild life refuge as an emergency u. S. Navy oil supply because of its vast underground regions. Alex from new york. Good morning. Caller im sorry, did you just say alex . Host i did. Caller i feel that were all overthinking it aggressively. Its like war. Its unsavory and we really dont want to have to engage in it but were doing it for the future. Its as simple as that. Host thank you for your viewpoint. And lynn from utah. What do you think . Caller i absolutely support any effort to combat Climate Change and i want joe biden to win in 2024 region but i think deb haaland has sold out to the world industry and she does nothing for the end dangered species. Shes thrown wolves and bears to the worst legislation possible cyanide bombing etc. And she has never done her job from day one. The Biden Administration needs to get rid of deb haaland. Host thats lynn from utah. Senator ted cruise has something cruz has something to say on fox. Dees it will prices rise ho in just since may. It has really been striking. That is a manifestation of the failures of the biden Foreign Policy and number two on top of that, weve got now two and a half years of a relentless war waged by the Biden Administration on oil and Gas Production in the United States. You know, joe biden when he was campaigning for president. He promised the American People. He said if you elect me, i will shut down new drilling on federal lands onshore and new drilling on federal lands offshore. And sadly, this administration has worked day and night to push that radical agenda. Host and back to your calls. Jeff, dearborn, michigan. What do you think about the Biden Administrations canceling of oil drilling leases in the wildlife refuge . Caller im supportive of that. For the fella talking about about the post office rectify their lease . They were going to do that in 2006 and were opposed by the republicans. And if im not mistaken, it was at that point that they got saddled with having to pay more health care for like 75 years out for people that they havent even hired yet. So thats how that went. Thanks, steve. Host allen is next from bonita springs, florida. Allen, good morning to you. Caller yeah, hi. I just have one thing to say. That beautiful corvette that biden has uses gas and he has to change the oil ever so often. Thats all i have to say. Thats allen from florida. The Biden AdministrationDepartment Drilling from alaska the new regulations would ensure what the administration called maximum protection for nearly half of the Petroleum Reserve but would not stop the enormous 8 billion Willow Oil Drilling project in the same vicinity which President Biden approved this area. Climate activists particularly young environmentalists were angered by mr. Bidens decision in march calling it a carbon bomb. Many called the move of betrayal of mr. Bidens Campaign Promise of no new drilling period on federal lands and water. This article goes on to say that average temperatures in the arctic are increasing about four times as fast as the rest of the globe. It is often describe as ground zero because of recordbreaking heat, thawing, permafrost and glacier melt. Next call is bill in youngstown, new york. Bill, what do you think about the administrations position . Caller i think its a bad decision. He is not letting this country produce pell lump that is petroleum that is needed for the country. At least this country has a respect for the country. Host biden freezes u. S. Arctic oil. Oil prices have climbed this week after saudi arabia and russia extend their production cut. The Biden Administrations response, restrict u. S. Oil development. President biden is delivering on the most ambitious climate and conservation agenda in history, interior secretary deb haalanded. The climate agenda is also the most lawless and economically destructive in history. There were two lease sales within the coastal plain of anwar. Mr. Biden proposed he claims to have the authority to cancel and suspend oil and gas leases issued in violation of a statute of regulation and that the anwr leases include fundamental legal deficiency. Speaking of deficiencies, the wall street journal said the administrations actions are based on the best available science and in recognition of the indigenous knowledge. Last year, the White House Office of science and Technology Policy issued a memo directing agencies to include indigenous knowledge as an aspect of the best available science. The memo encouraged agencies to consult spiritual leaders and condemned meth logical dogma. The high priest declared they plan to challenge interior piece cancelation of the anwr leases and its religious climate dogma may not hold up in court. Wanda from chico, california. Good morning to you, wanda. What do you think about the Biden Administrations effort to expand drilling . Caller Everyone Needs to watch this video. Its called the great Global Warming swindle. And it was produced by the bbc. And theyre not in the constitution. The department of the interior has no Constitutional Authority whatsoever because they are not in the constitution along with a lot of other departments. Host thank you, maam, for calling in. Todd in cleveland, tennessee. Whats your view about this decision . Caller i am wondering how long is it going to take this administration to go after the your gas stations. How are they going to deem this unconstitutional and just take us fuel of the day for people to get to work . Im disgusted with what this administration has done. Host thank you, sir, for calling in. Heres a statement by senator joe manson, democrat, west virginia, who is with chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee. Heres what he had to say about the decision. I cant explain to the American People why we would willingly become more dependent on foreign oil imports, eliminating good paying good jobs and drive up the cars of applicant bills and gas prices across the country. This is yet another example of this administration caving to the radical left with no regard for clear direction from congress or energy superiority. Lets be clear. This is another attempt to use executive action to accomplish what this administration does not have the vote to achieve in congress. Canceling leases and removing acreage from future and also tempting to reduce production in alaska while taking steps to allow iran and scenes way la venezuela to produce more oil makes no sense and is frankly embarrassing. Tondra is next. Caller i think he could do more and not drill and then just stop. Ify mean, thats the reason why its high because they want to make more money. And not have anything to do with the fact that were going to e. V. s or anything like that and personally, i think we should have more e. V. s that runs on electricity electric, you know . If we want a gener society. But more or less, people are afraid of Climate Change because they know the mortality is sooner than they think. And older people dont care about Climate Change because theyre on their way out. All the old people making the laws and so i think Climate Change is a good thing. Thats all. Host thank you for calling in. Rob tweets in that this decision is wonderful. He couldnt be happier. And the Willow Project should have been nixed as well. Here in north dakota, kieran. What do you think about this decision . Caller good morning. Yeah, i oppose it. And im from north dakota but i do not work in the oil industry out in the west. Im in the ag hull type of work in a mill in the eastern part of the state. Theres a lot of people who are simply naive to but the moving of weight. The word weight itself. Like ill give you an example. I could go into a north dakota Walmart Grocery store in the middle of winter and during a ground blizzard, 45 below zero, get in there and i could find a fresh pineapple at the middle of winter. In the tip of michigan. How do you lose pineapple . Is it grown in south dakota . No. Its the power of the Diesel Engine and we are a generation that never had to build anything. Were spoiled rotten. Get behind a giant truck filled with trees and up and down those grains and just struggling to get up. 18,000 pounds and its moving to 10,000 little towns to bring milk, cattle, grain, cement, stone, Roofing Supplies host tim, i think we got your point. Has and it been important in your view for development . Caller you could probably ask the guy thats running. I dont know much about him. I was a roofer back there for many years. Ive been on lots of job sites from north georgia to pennsylvania and i was always amazed at the amount of things that are moved to build a school or to boost a giant unit up on top of the roof. A lot of people dont take host all right. We got your point. Robert in alabama. What do you think of the Biden Administration piece decision on drilling . Caller i believe hes correct. You go up into the permafrost and then its 200 years recovery. Thats not short term. Thats too much. Host this text came in from larry. This ruling has little to do with controlling the environment but a lot about controlling you. Paul, fort lauderdale. Good morning. Caller good morning. I would like to say that im a republican and that i know for a fact that Climate Change is a fact and it is a problem for the world. I would also like to say if you to think im a friend of the Petroleum Industry, you havent been around me during the hurricanes. The deal with gasoline in my generator. Its nasty, poisonous stuff. I dont like gasoline. But heres the thing. Ok . Im sick and tired of the bigots lying that is supported by the press and everyone else i can name. And that is the big rise is this. Environmentalists are shown in a way that makes them sound like the environment is a water faucet and they have the power to turn the water faucet off. That is a big lie. The other big lie is this, ok . If you are in favor of environment, youre good. But if you have any arguments for energy that the environmentalist dont want, youre bad. And that is a big lie. That is part of the problem we have. Now let me give you an example of what these environmentalists have accomplished, ok . The payoff. We banned r22 because the environmentalists said the ozone cap over the arctic was virtually banned the arctic cap has not restored itself. Host all right. Paul were going to leave it there. Were going to hear from ellen. Hi. What do you think about the Biden Administrations decision on oil drill something. Caller well, i totally approve. I have issue with a couple of your previous callers just as i turned on, i heard one guy say that old people dont care. Well, i am old. Im 82. And i have cared. I care now. Ive cared for a very long time. And i do everything i can to support people who say that they are for, you know, fixing as much as possible, fixing the environment. Boy, that really got me mad. I know other old people who care a lot. We do have children and grandchildren. And even if we didnt, we care about the rest of the people in the world. The second one right after that talked about how women didnt really understand about buildings, how buildings are created. Well, i really dont. But i think a lot of men dont understand that either. Now, as far as my supporting this decision, ive seen evidence of this. Ive flown over the polar caps. You could see the diminishing ice field and glaciers and all that. And another kind of interesting thing that i have seen that just occurred to me when i was down at the tip of south america, theres a piece of land that was created well, theres a city and they build a town by going out into the wilderness and cutting down trees. That was in the early, 20th century like 1900. And theres a sightseeing event out there to see the earth at the end of the world, i think they call it, the land at the end of the world. Those trees are little stumps. Its like a graveyard of trees that never grew back. It was over 100 years. And they were just little stump in the barren wilderness. Host were going to leave it there. We appreciate your calling in. On facebook, dan horton posts i partly agree with this decision by the Biden Administration. Gas prices are artificially kept high agreed by the Oil Companies and opec so more drilling only means even more outrageous profits. Matt from massachusetts. Good morning. Caller good morning. Yeah, ive been listening now for decades these rightwingers talk about how Climate Changes are real. I dont understand why they trust Oil Companies over a growth of independent professional scientific consensus. I really dont understand. And every argument whether it is talking about why he china not doing it . First of all they are trying to get away from fossil fuels. It doesnt matter what they are doing because we dont go by there rules. Some other color said, i would rather have innovations and freedom from fossil fuels rather than be controlled by saudi arabia. That would require the right wingers that gas prices and oil prices are an International Phenomenon and they dont have anything to do with the Keystone Pipeline in china. In the end, its like they live in a totally different universe of false reality. Host we have philip in north nebraska. I live in the midwest here and i raise cattle yesterday, our field prices jumped 56 is dollars a gallon and it will breed havoc across the country. I hope it doesnt lead to a recession. Host now we will turn our attention to Public Policy issues. 202 7488000, for republicans 202 7488001, 202 7488002 for independents. We will be right back. This fall watch the news serious series. The fifth circuit ruled that the Biden White House top Government Health officials probably violated the First Amendment by influencing tech decisions to remove or suppress misinformation on the coronavirus and the election. They long argued that social media efforts restrict their free speech rights but they said the ruling was an improvement over the temporary injunction that Terry Doughty issued on july 4. The new injunction was 1000 times better than an appointee had ordered originally. It affected a wide range of Government Agencies and imposed 10 officials. They limited to efforts to coerce or significantly encourage social Media Companies to remove, reduce and out during altering algorithms to curb free speech. They also limited Government Officials affected by its ruling. The Surgeon Generals office, center of Disease Control and the fbi. Thats on the front page of the washington post. Anthony, you are on the washington journal. Caller i called him before and i had two points, i want to make a comment that you and i discussed before. I have been a democrat but i dont feel like were going in the right direction. I believe in Global Warming. I dont believe we have a plan to deal with it. I understand we have legislation that we need electric panels and car rebates. I dont think its a drop in the bucket and we need a 9 11 commission to look at Something Like this because if its really serious, we need litigation, building storm walls. Even if we had electric cars the storms will be coming. I think we should go back to nuclear. And we need to have a plan to do this. We really dont have a plan right now we just have a lot of going back and forth. Host what is your second point . Caller you and i talked about programming before. Again, i salute washington journal i think thats the only thing we have got for us. Every other station is mostly bias. We talked the last time and i asked you as a question, why arent we showing the White House Press briefings . In your response to me was when congress is in session that takes priority. I get that, it cspan. When congress was on vacation we still didnt see the White House Press briefings. We have stuff about president s and book clubs and stuff that happened weeks earlier. I still think we need to have that. Host that means a White House Press briefing wasnt happening. If it is happening, you will see karine sean pierre this network. Id take note argument than that. If you find it somewhere else and it has not aired. Most times we air press briefings. We have karen on the independent line. Caller definitely appreciate your efforts and you have a lot more political patients than i do. Getting back to anwar, it is 4 of alaska in the area they are interested in is a person of that. They control anywhere they want to in alaska. Other than restricted areas. Alaska shares the royalties with their citizens which is something in the lower 48. Its not even heard of. I worked in that area in the Petroleum Industry for 50 years but i definitely support the efforts of biden and he did not restrict that was done by Ronald Reagan and it was undone by the last administration that said go in there and take the land if you have to. He is only reinstating what was put there in the first place by Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Host do you still work in the oil industry or are you offshore . Caller ive been offshore but those days are behind me. The area im in, i work with the safety side of it. Vessel abandonment, aquatic survival and rescue techniques. At the university and lafayette has been doing this since the 80s and the first facility of its kind in the country. They had equipment if they had to abandon ship but there was no where they could practice that equipment. Host you worked in prudo bay, is it in the wildlife refuge . Caller it is where the alaskan pipeline starts. That oil, it is probably cheaper for the Major Players in the Petroleum Industry to send that to japan then it would be to the california coast. Host in your view, is this drilled responsibly or not . Caller what i saw, there was a lot of caribou and wildlife and ducks, geese. Everything is responsible until there is a leak. The alaskan pipeline was built with taxpayers money and as soon as it was built we sold it to british petroleum. They were supposed to run a pipe inspection gauge which probably they did not. When the pipeline had a leak it was cheaper for them to pay the line then to pay it to inspect the pipeline. Host we appreciate your expertise. Don is a republican in montana. Caller good morning, i wonder why they dont show that whale washing up on the Eastern Shore where these windmills are and why they dont show all the dead eagles under these windmills . You know they damage the environment too. Thank you. Host surely from wellington, illinois. Caller i am glad you took my call. I would like to touch on a subject that no one is talked about and since you have open forum, i would like to mention it. What is wrong with our politicians that they think it is ok to pack up and take classified or declassified documents home with them when they are no longer in office . None of it should be taken by any Government Official whatsoever including a former president. This is an embarrassment to our country. All of it should be filed away in a government archive where it is safe and locked up in case those papers are ever needed in the future. What could these politicians ever need those papers for . It doesnt make any sense . Our government is starting to act like little kids and i am scared these papers could have fallen into the wrong hands. I think the Supreme Court should make it a law that no documents are to be taken by anyone. Elevate should be turned over to the archives with no exception. All of it should be turned over to the archives. Host thank you for calling in this morning. This is from the National Review which is a conservative publication and this is by henry olson. Biden impeachment would hurt the gop. Many republicans are urging Kevin Mccarthy to authorize impeachment hearings. His murky business dealings before he entered the white house with his poor Job Performance make this move tempting but he should take the longer view because hosting hearings would be bad for the country and the gop. Partisans on both sides call to impeach president simply because a policy difference. Democrats tried to impeach george bush turning policy problems. Many talked about impeaching barack obama but they did not file articles against him. These efforts were attempts to turn policy differences into high crimes and misdemeanors. Henry olson writes bidens alleged crimes fill similar territory. His actions with regard to hunters influence peddling was sleazy some of his executive actions have been odious as his unwillingness of the southern border are they borderline criminal or merely inept and disagreeable . They are arguably the latter they should be reasons not to reelect them rather than as grounds his removal from office. The country would suffer if House Republicans move forward with impeachment. Trust in our institutions is dropping but the fact that too many leaders of these institution seek to use them from power plays to advance their own designs that is what authorizing impeachment would rightly be perceived as. This is henry olson writing in the National Review. Mike from montgomery alabama. What is on your mind . Caller i want to talk about legislative priorities to address the pallet shortage. That is at the heart of the american workforce. Hr professionals and leaders are tasked with creating a balanced workplace so everyone can thrive. 46 of organization experiment with the work because of the labor shortage. There are two movements for Workforce Development and workplace integration. Congress is moving forward to develop some workforce packet policies, is a push for these policymakers to consider these two issues. Workforce development and work force immigration because they are too important elements to thrive. It needs to be reauthored with the apprenticeship programs. Host why do you have an interest in this topic . Caller i am in hr executive and i am having difficulty in securing talent. The h1b process needs to be streamlined. There are talented Software Engineers on f1 visas. They are going to school at universities and they cant bridge the gap to h1b because its a lottery. Host thank you for calling in with your issue. John in wisconsin on the independent line. What is on your mind . Caller there were no vehicles on the planet thousands of years ago. What causes Climate Change . It changes naturally by itself. Thats number one. I would accept anna 15, 20 week ban on abortion. A 15, 20 week ban on abortion. Back in the 80s when Ronald Reagan signed Immigration Reform, the preface of the bill i dont think we should do any Immigration Reform until we secure our southern border whether it is by wall or the latest technologies. Thank you. Host that is john in wisconsin and he mentioned abortion. This is on the front page of the wall street journal. Gop searches for new methods on abortion ahead of 2024. Senate republicans stung by stunning losses are working to craft a more effective message on abortion as the party confronts the fallout from last years Supreme Court decision. How the gop handles the issue could be critical to the efforts to regain the senate and white house when abortion is expected to play a central role in elections and the closeddoor lunch Senate Republicans talked about shifting Public Attitudes for abortion based on research by one nation a political nonprofit aligned with mitch mcconnell. The take away . Research shows voter support for some restriction after 1215 weeks, and exceptions for life and health of the mother, rape and mother. More than a dozen gop controlled states have a total ban on abortion and many of those with few exceptions for rape and incest and others have banned abortion after six weeks and it goes on to say, they advise senators it is not enough to identify as prolife without giving a detailed description of what they are for or against and then form the center as painting democrats is far above. Caller hold on just a second. Im a blind africanamerican. And people can blow me off. [inaudible] more as to growth, help me get looked at. Host we have allen from north carolina. Caller i want to talk about the student loan crisis where repayments will be starting up again. In 2005 i went in to school on 35,000 loan. Two months later they wanted 83,000 within five days. After i stopped laughing, the next time i was contacted they wanted 103,000 when they told me i could set up a payment plan i was at a hundred 17,000. The payment plan, im 62 years old. If i live long enough to do it my student loan would be paid back at 360,000. The narrative about student loan and bidens plan to forgive 10,000 which was nothing because if you owe 10,000 year end a good situation. But there are millions of us out there that goes back to removing bankruptcy rights from student loan debt. Biden was one of the ones who voted for it in 2005 that only a few can prove, undefined by congress, undue hardship. We have this rule that will continue as an 800 pound gorilla in it will continue to get bigger and our teachers paying 100,000 to start at 43,000, what is not being discussed is the mismanagement and Higher Education. The cost of Higher Education in the forprofits and their ties into d. C. The narrative is divisive about forgiving student loan debt. Let me pay what i owe before the greatest scam of modern history started or let me declare bankruptcy which is not a treat, not a reward. But as it stands, the only thing i can do is make payments until i die or my credit is shot. Host thank you for sharing your experience. Lisa and east elmhurst, new york. Caller first time caller, i have two questions, isnt biden the commander and chief over the military . Why cant he override tuberville from alabama. The decision not to bring with these people who are waiting in the military . Host what was your second point the wanted to make . Caller wasnt truck convicted of a crime . Wasnt trump convicted of a crime in new york . I thought he was convicted of sexual molestation. Host what is your point . Caller if he was convicted of a crime why is he eligible . People convicted of a crime cant even vote. Host joe is in st. Clair, michigan. What is on your mind . Caller i watch washington journal every morning religiously. It is amazing to hear these people to call in and they have more knowledge of how the system works. The Supreme Court should make a law. I remember a guy called in to pedro a year ago and said when Benjamin Franklin was president of the United States he said never trust a republican. Will Benjamin Franklin was never president of the United States and the Republican Party founded in 1854 as a result of the kansas nebraska act and Benjamin Franklin had already been dead for 60 years. They are cracking down on tax cheats to pay with ao but it has been politically contentious with republicans claiming that they will use the funding to harass small businesses. Republican succeeded in clawing back 20 billion as part of an agreement to raise the nations borrowing cap. The political fight has put the onus on democrats to show the funding is primarily enabling the irs to target wealthy americans and corporations who may have engaged in taxation. Jim is in tucker, georgia. Caller good morning, thank you for taking my call. I dont want to waste a lot of time talking about how terrible the republicans are. But i am glad you started the program talking about drilling at anwr that is a wise decision by the Biden Administration. I am so glad he has done that. I hear of these republicans talking about how great oil is and how Clean Natural gases. What they dont realize, natural gas is still a petroleum product. Even though it burns clean it is still pending carbon into the atmosphere that has not been there for millions of years. It is not a clean fuel. Hydrogen has a lot of promise. Im seeing a lot of developments in hydrogen, creating hydrogen from other means. Caller i remember during the administration we were talking about hydrogen. Host what advances have been made since then . Caller i dont have it right in front of me but some of the things i have seen they are able to generate hydrogen from other means. I think a lot of it is driven from petroleum. The old way of creating hydrogen is Energy Intensive but these new developments are coming along indicating its much easier to create hydrogen from means other than the ones that are Energy Intensive that we have not used in the past. I have been seeing them on the newsfeed so there are positive things that can come along with hydrogen. Also, i am also seeing new developments in battery technology. We have a very promising future with the electrification of moving away from petroleum. I am glad that biden has done this. It shows true leadership that we need to do. If you want somebody who will be more involved, vote for a democrat because republicans, they dont get it. Host have you converted to npv yet . Ev yet . Caller i have old vehicles and im interested in renewing them and i am certainly looking at a hybrid or electric. I think that is the way things are going to go and i am so excited about biden doing this infrastructure deal. Earlier in his administration, that is really great. If you really want to, if youre concerned about health care, the environment and Global Warming vote for a democrat. I want to give it shot out to hank johnson. Host we want to introduce you to Ashley Oliver who is a Justice Department reporter for the Washington Examiner. How long have you been covering the Justice Department and specifically the hunter biden investigation . Guest i started covering this summer so im new to this particular breed of covering congress. Before that i was with another publication. I am new to it but it was a highly active beat from the get go. Host give us a snapshot of how many investigations are going on and potential charges are out there . Guest the hunter biden investigation is all over the place. You have Congress Investigating him for two different approaches. They are looking at him, his dealings and joe biden. They are investigating the investigators to see if there were missteps involved in the Justice Departments yearlong investigation. You have the Justice Department also investigating hunter biden. Into his dealings and he almost reached the plea deal on tax charges. David weiss indicated he will indict him on a gun charge, a felony gun charge. There is that investigation. There are three you can separate into. Host is there there, there . Guest in the Justice Department there was the plea deal in entering into a pretrial diversion agreement for a gun charge. He seemed ready to avoid the gun charge. It seems like david weiss has uncovered at least that. Republicans are unsatisfied with those charges and they think there is more to it. They think joe biden had involvement in business dealings and influence peddling going on. That is the lingering question but the Justice Department does have a few hard and fast charges going forward. Host both in the Washington Examiner and Washington Times there are headlines about emails being released that involve hunter biden and vice President Biden. Who is getting these emails . Why are they being released . Guest they are surfacing from the laptop from 2021 that came onto the scene from the archives story. There are also emails that are part of the foyer pursuit foia pursuit. Host you can tell we are talking about the hunter biden investigation it will put the numbers up on the screen. Divided by political affiliation, for democrats 202 7488000, for republicans 202 7488001, 202 7488002 for independents you can also text into 202 7488003 and make sure to include your first name in your city. From what youve investigated, as the congressional investigation being down by three committees, correct . Guest three republicans are leaning it, leaving it. Host how strong of their investigations . Guest jason smith the Biggest Development and may when he spoke with irs whistleblowers. That was an explosive testimony to be acquired from two investigators. They said they had been investigating him for years but the infant gas station was roadblock of people interfered to help hunter biden. That was quite an advancement for republicans in their approach. Host chairman gomer has been coming out with new email revelations and it doesnt seem to be widely picked up. Is that a Fair Assessment . Guest the problem with what james comer is doing is managing the oversight of the substance of what he has done. That really is the web, a chart of all these Different Countries and numbers and people involved and that is what he is tasked to presenting and is not the most adjustable content. Then you have jim jordan whos responsible for the judiciary component and the doj. Thats more straightforward than what james comer has to do. Host you had a recent story in the examiner, hunter biden, fbi witness testifies before congress after jim jordan subpoena. Guest thus the latest development in the trio of investigations going on. They want to talk to a number of people. Involved with the doj investigation they have information about possible wrongdoing that the Justice Department had helped hunter biden. They first asked them voluntarily have employees talk into the committee. They showed resistance so that because its an Ongoing Investigation and they dont want to talk about Ongoing Investigations. Jim jordan subpoena to have them and they reached an agreement to get the employees to come to talk to congress with the doj to have attorneys be the middleman. Host did we learn anything from the testimony . Has it leaked yet . Guest i have not gotten substance of this but i am certain we will find out more information in the next week or so. Host for investigation number two, House Republicans are looking at the dojs investigation of hunter biden and what is the status of that . Guest thus the one we talked about with 13 individuals. They were involved in the drg investigation. The irs agents were present at a meeting last year and they said that was a key meeting in one of the whistleblower said there was a redlined meaning where they wanted to come forward to congress with what they perceived us missteps in the investigation. David weiss was blocked from bringing charges against hunter biden and told he could not charge him and california or washington dc. There are things that the agents brought to light and thats what the republicans are looking into. The testimony scheduled for this and next week well find out if these fbi agents that they are talking to have any information if the investigation was operating. Host who is next week . Guest another fbi investigator, they were two special agents at the Baltimore Field Office that has jurisdiction over wilmington where the hunter biden investigation would be. Host do you have a flowchart in your office to help you figure out all of these moving pieces . Guest i have not posted things on the wall yet, but i do have notebooks. Host david weiss is described as a trump appointee is that fair . Guest he was conducted appointed to conduct the investigation. I dont think that should characterize him in one direction or another. Host the third investigation is the dojs investigation of hunter biden . Are you able to get information from the department of justice . Guest they are somewhat helpful they are by the book and they speak through their court filings. They point you to what they filed in court. Right now, what we know is the life of the plea deal in the death of the plea deal. And that they plan to indict biden at the end of the month. Host when do you expect to see hunter biden back on capitol hill . Guest i dont know the timeline because the indictment is supposed to come by september 29 and from there its up to the lawyers to come to terms with the trial date. Depending on when they aside is when we would see hunter biden next. I think we would have to wait for the two parties to establish a trial date. Host have these investigations in your view from what youve seen implicated President Biden in anything . Guest i cant say that is what has happened yet but there are credible allegations that deserve scrutiny. There are a lot of salacious headlines but if you peel them back, there is an fb1023 that has a credible allegation that comes from a credible sores. And there is also a whistle blower comment about protecting hunter biden . There are concerns about joe bidens response and his snippy notice when questions about it. I dont think it is worth writing off i think its of the republicans are pursuing sincerely. Host now time for your calls. We have henry from alabama on the democratic line. Henry, are you with this . Caller yes. Host please go ahead. Caller hunter biden is a smokescreen for trumps soninlaw and saturday arabia. In saudi arabia and President Trump in this investigation . Guest i think thats a totally separate situation. I know that jamie raskin, a democrat is pursuing any connections. I think that its entirely separate from what is going on with hunter biden. You have to look at them as two different cases. Host lets hear what jamie raskin had to say about this. [video clip] what are you after here with your colleague today . Weve been trying to get this information for more than a year. We know there was 2 billion and a Management Fee from the saudi government and the uae and qatar have kicked in money. There is more than 3 billion in there. We want to reconstruct what those countries got out of it. Remember that saudi arabia and Sovereign Wealth Fund advisors recommended against giving that money to jared custer on the grounds that he was inexperienced and they were asking for a ridiculous sum of money and their advisors were overruled by the homicidal crown prince who has been billed out of the situation he got into after he ordered the execution of jamaal khashoggi. The trumps did a lot for them and donald about it saying that he saved the princes posterior multiple times and wanted to remind him of that. We know Jared Kushner created a business the day after the Trump Administration ended within two months he had brought home billions of dollars from the saudi government. We want all the information the same way that they are going after hunter biden who never worked for the government, was not in the Biden Administration. He is the adult emancipated son. We should get the information about Jared Kushner who is not just his son in was actually managing middle east Foreign Policy at the time. Host so he did raise some questions comparing jared push to hunter biden. Guest i think there are questions about politicians being targeted by foreign officials so there is a general concern about that for any political family. The bidens, the trumps, the bushes. This is raskins response to what the republicans are doing. Host karen is in alabama on the republican line. Caller we always have to bring trumps family into this. What i would like to say is, kushner had his fees after trump was out of office. Why did hunter biden the only charge they have now had nothing to do with President Biden while all the other charges have a link to President Biden. Right now, gomer is trying to get a copy of emails from joe biden included two names that he used for official government records. That cced hunter biden and his partners. He said he had nothing to do with his business. Host we have two questions you will ask about mary oliver about. Have you been following this issue closely . Caller yes, of course. Host david weiss was her first issue. Guest he did request to become special counsel in august. That raised eyebrows with republicans and that is part of their investigation into the dojs investigation as to why after five years of investigating him is just now requesting the special authority. The irs whistleblower said that he asked for the authority and denied it. He came out and rejected the notion is that he always had the ability to bring charges whenever and however she chose. It looks like they are decided that this plea deal has fallen apart so i will request this authority to bring charges but why did he not do that earlier . That is why republicans want to talk to a number of officials. Host ashley officer is david weisss office good with the press . Guest they tend to direct you to their court filings. That is where you have to rely on your information and is good information because its distinctly written out. Outside of that, they tend to try to be quiet about the investigation while ongoing. Host her second point was about the emails and alias. Walk us through that . Guest that is something that james gomer has taken on and i dont want to get into the weeds of this because there is a lack of clarity about why he might have had aliases and for what reason. I dont think that his implicated joe biden because there are a number of reasons as to why he could have been using them. Host did he make the assumption that the aliases were some kind of code . Guest they think hunter biden that he use those aliases while doing business. He saw communications that ended with them involving hunter biden. There was a question as to if they benefited him in some kind of nefarious engagement with hunter biden and his Business Partners but it has not been proven yet. Host Los Angeles Times editorial. Hunter bidens problem are legitimately his daz problem two. Guest it is awkward when there is a highprofile investigation going on against your son. And between congress and the Justice Department. It does involve him and joe biden remains adamant that he is not dealt with inside business dealings but he is not dead himself any favors by being snappy with reporters. He recently called a question allows the question which was a legitimate question about Hunter BidensBusiness Partner. Host are you surprised to see the Los Angeles Times saying this . Guest they are known to be a bit more sympathetic to democrats. It does give a little credence to the fact that hunter biden is a problem for joe biden but isnt objectively true situation where he is facing questions about hunter. There was a poll that 51 of americans that feels that he is less than credible in his business decisions. Host the cnn poll on hunter biden and business dealings 61 they had some involvement, 42 percent said he acted illegally and 18 said at and ethical but not illegal. Long beach, california, a democrat. You are on the air. Caller i heard 61 of americans think that biden has sown involvement. With his son, the cocaine addict. Its ridiculous that anyone would have to say that to believe it. He is a three decade senator. I think he wrote the violence against women act. He was head of the Foreign Affairs committee. I wanted him to be president for almost three decades. He is a decent man. I have seen the photos. I know the story. The most this lady has said is that there is a possibility maybe. Thats it. That is not evidence. It is ridiculous to think that a man under public scrutiny would get involved in business deals with his son who he knows is very, very ill. Host we got your point. Ashley oliver, do you have a response for her . Guest that is one take. If joe biden has been in politics for so long, why is this just surfacing now . Highprofile political families do tend to that involved in high dollar business dealings. That tends to raise questions. He is the president of the United States. He has the biggest target on his back. There is the biggest justification for scrutinizing him at this point. I would say that it is worth scrutinizing him to this degree, but there is no hard proof that he was involved. Host you are a Justice Department reporter for the Washington Examiner. How much of your time is spent on this story . Guest 1 5 of it, if you are looking at the highprofile indictments out there. Our readers at the examiner are interested in this. There are all of these trump indictments. It is a balance, covering all of these. Host vicki in missouri, independent line, go ahead. Caller ashley, i want to ask you a question and the question is have you interviewed david archer . Host who is david archer, vicki . Caller he is Hunter Bidens business associate. Host we will get a question from ashley and just a minute. Why are you asking this question . Caller he was subpoenaed and he said that joe biden had nothing to do with any of Hunter Bidens business dealings. That happens all the time in this country. You could be sitting around, talking to a Family Member and there is someone else in the room. You dont know who else is in the room. Just because bidens son has business dealings does not mean that he has anything to do with them. Where is the evidence . You guys are such a misogynistic company to work for. I have read all about breitbart news. That is who you work for. Host thank you, vicki in missouri. We have a lot out there on the table. First of all, david archer. Who is david archer, and have you interviewed him . Guest the question from vicki is about archer who was a former Business Partner of hunter biden. I have not spoken with him. He has not done interviews with reporters as much as congress. We got a lot of information and a transcript of the interview he did with congress. On the democrats side they said it was a nothing burger. They said joe biden was on the phone with hunter biden sometimes, talking about business. Why is the president of the United States on speakerphone with hunter biden and his Business Partners . That lend credence to the fact that hunter biden was using his father as leverage, not that, that implicates President Biden. But he was having casual conversations with people hunter biden was making business deals with. Host breitbart does that affect your ability to cover this story fairly . Guest i have always covered this story objectively, so i dont think that has an impact on the coverage. Host cindy in pittsburgh. Caller i have two things, but first i want to say, thank you. Such a young woman. Much respect for the truth. I have to say the hunter biden thing is irrelevant. For most americans, we know who the criminal is. 45 years he has been in the government, joe biden. It is a disgrace. Ted kennedy even said he did a quid pro quo right on television about the ukrainian prosecutor. How dare it has gone on this long. Comber and those guys need to get it moving. Part of the problem is mccarthy. I just retired. I am a 45 year nurse. I cannot even believe this is happening. I think they need to subpoena merrick garland, his wife, and me orcas also. Look at and mayorkas also. Host she says that hunter is irrelevant because this is about the president. Do you have any comment on the . Guest i think hunter is a side note to what joe biden may or may not have been doing. Hunter biden is a private citizen so his own flaws are for him to deal with the consequences are for him to face. There is no real incentive for americans to be so invested in that situation but if you was involving his father, and using his father in business dealings or doing anything nefarious behind the scenes with his father, at that point hunter biden would be rolled in. Host a p said that a biden impeachment a peace said that a biden a piece said that a biden impeachment would harm the Republican Party. Is that tied to what we are talking about with hunter biden . Guest that ties the republican investigation into Hunter Bidens business dealings. The republicans are saying that because of the alleged involvement that joe biden had with hunter biden and impeachment inquiry could be in future. It might come after the drama with the continuing resolution and they wouldnt wanted to detract from that, which is a little more imminent. I think that the impeachment inquiry could be coming soon. James comer has said that he thinks it will come and there will be a floor vote on an impeachment inquiry and mccarthy has said that if they launch one, he will hold a floor vote. At that point that means he expects enough republicans to vote in favor of launching an inquiry. If that is what republicans do, a majority would have to vote. Host a majority of congress, correct . Guest they would have to get almost all republicans on board to do it. Host and fired former speaker nancy pelosi, she did it unilaterally. Guest i think you are correct. She did not hold a floor vote. With the ukraine impeachment this good partly be a republican response to that impeachment as well. They aggressively pursued President Trump, so no i think republicans feel that maybe it is their time to match that level of investigation, so this could be a response to that. Host the viewers who follow this closely will hopefully forgive me for this question, but could you briefly tell us about the ukraine connection once more and hunter biden . Guest to revisit that, what started with trump making a phone call to president zelenskyy to look into hunter biden and joe biden back in 2019 allegations swirled. The laptop story broken open and made it more popular as well but they say that hunter biden, who was on a board of a company in ukraine was in a lucrative position. He was making 1 million a year off of it. At times the Obama Administration wanted to crackdown on corruption so they were taking a lot of anticorruption measures that involved biden going over to ukraine in forcing the firing of their top prosecutor for being corrupt. The allegation is that this attorney may have been investigating burisma. It is awkward to have joe biden cracking down on corruption in ukraine while his son is doing a bunch of business there so that was an odd juxtaposition. Host mary in philadelphia, democrats line. Caller good morning, cspan. People in this country are unaware. It is mandatory you pay taxes in this country. You are exempt if you have a severe medical disability. I have served the state of pennsylvania as an investigator for years. If you are getting any type of government assistance, if you required to work or you are in school you are exempt but it is mandatory. Because hunter biden had a Substance Abuse problem and this was his first offense then he is given leeway. We integrated all of our financial databases and systems under president reagan because we were in a recession and he wanted to know who was paying taxes in this country, even if you come to this country as an immigrant, you are provided with a valid Social Security number and anyone who is not paying taxes, you are violating the law. Host thank you. We will leave it there. Any comments for mary when it comes to taxes and Hunter Bidens addiction . Guest im not really clear on what the question was, but i will say that hunter biden was on the hook for taxes in two different years and he has admitted to being addicted to hard drugs up some point during th drugs at some point during that timeframe. Ultimately, the irs agents investigating him said he could have been on the hook for 2014 and 2015 tax issues as well but the statute has run out on those so im not sure how they will handle that but i think thats why the irs agents became frustrated because they think he should be held responsible for more than just those two years. Host dave from long island, independent line. Go ahead. Caller im glad you brought up the burisma situation. Im a little bit overwhelmed. I was a situation back in 2015 when he got put on the board of directors for that and i was aware of it at the time because i watched the documentary ukraine on fire. There are a few red flags. The first red flag is that it is a Natural Gas Company. You look at the situation in ukraine right now, how severe and incredibly horrible it is. It raises a red flag for me. The second one would be the seymour harsh article came out. It is still questionable who did it. To the rest of the world now we are selling the natural gas to germany. These are red flags. He is on the board of a Natural Gas Company in ukraine. Host dave, we will leave it at 2. Any comment for dave . Guest i think he is getting to the point that the gas company, hunter biden did not have experience in the Energy Sector per se. People have held that against him. Why are you on the energy of a board the board of an Energy Company . I dont have a comment on that though. Host our last comment comes from mike in houston, republican line. Caller there were 176 suspicious activity reports filed by International Bank transactions. That is a little odd. That is a red flag regarding the transactions. Also tony, where has he gone . Why was he not interviewed . He is a witness to all of this. Also the images and letters that joe biden sent to david archer, the images of them playing golf together. This is not just making phone calls by chance, magical coincidence that they are in the middle of a meeting. Host thank you, mike. Ashley oliver, transactions . Guest i will point to that fd 1023 forms which says the bidens were paid, basically bribed for biden to act against this ukrainian prosecutor. That is a huge accusation that we do not know that to be true or not. It is still being vetted by congress. On that form it said if you traced the 10 million it would take a decade to unravel all of the business dealings and all of the way they have funneled money to the bidens allegedly. There is a lot to break down and dissect. That is when we go back to the chart on the wall you would need to do it. The source would take years to unravel. Host Ashley Oliver has President Bidens brother and sister mentioned, implicated in this investigation. Guest his other Family Members are raised at times. The focus has been narrowed down to joe biden and what he wouldve done, but i know james biden and his sister have been raised in certain areas. Hunter biden got into a partnership with joe bidens brother at one point years ago. That came up because they are entangled in the web of business dealings that hunter biden has. I think for investigative purposes, they are narrowing it down two joe biden. Host what should we watch for next . Guest the first thing we will see as the indictment of hunter biden coming from david white. From there we went to see if he brings any more charges in the case against hunter biden. She specifically mentioned a charge about the foreign agents registration act. So there is a question of whether he could be on the hook for a fara violation. We need to see what happens with the indictment and if there will be a trial after that. Host Ashley Oliver covers the Justice Department for the Washington Examiner. Thank you for being with us. Coming up, regular viewers of the washington journal know we regularly have podcast hosts on and up next we will have 3 of them. They will be coming up in about half an hour or so, but open form again. It seems to me that they are doing a lot of other things that have nothing to do with the peoples business. They are making points politically, everything like that. I won them to take care of the economy. The right to vote, abortion even. Hunter and all this stuff is not taking care of the people. Host thank you for calling in. [video clip] every time the radical left emma kratts and democrats and fascists indictment, i consider it a great badge of honor. I do. I am being indicted for you. I im not too thrilled about that, but that is part of the job description. It is a threat to democracy while they trample our rights and liberties every single day of the year. You turn it on, and you see what they are doing. It is for the bluecollar waiters, the waitresses that biden is harassing with new irs agents that are allowed to carry guns, by the way. While the Biden Crime Family cheats on their taxes as they taken millions and mil take in millions and millions of dollars from around the world. Joe biden is a manchurian candidate. He is totally controlled by china and other candidates who paid him off countries who paid him off. He is terrified because they know the real numbers. Jim jordan would not have to wait very long if he gave them a list. That is why he is acting week with so many christian weak with so many christians. The prolife christians who biden has thrown into jail for protesting while antifa does not get prosecuted. This battle we are in is a battle for all of us. This is historic. We will fight together, we will win together, and then we will seek justice together. [applause] host back live to your calls, deborah in maryland, democrats line. What is on your mind . Caller im going back to the hunter biden thing. Just as a comment to cspan, the only people you ever have on their on this issue are the Washington Examiner or some similar rightwing outlet. I watch this every day. If you have anyone else addressing this issue, let me know. There was a greatthere was a gri Glenn Kessler in the washington post, explaining how the timeline for what the republicans are alleging does not work out. There are numerous other publications who have looked at this and found nothing. The very proof that they find nothing you can bet that they have had account and searching for some malfeasance on his part. They cannot find the if they have any evidence there is Something Else up there, why do they not produce it . They cannot produce it is why they do not produce it. I wish you would get someone reputable to review the returns and explain because i hear this all the time on cspan. How did joe biden get this money . He got it from speaking fees, royalties from book sales, salary from university of pennsylvania. He does not have a lot of investments. His Bank Accounts are listed like everyone else has to do. He answers no to the questions if he has formed Bank Accounts on returns. If they have any evidence of the contrary, they have not produce it. Cspan should be more evenhanded in treating the issue. It is almost like you want to produce more heat than light which is unfortunate. I do think that some of these outlets are slandering the bidens. If challenged in court, which i know it would be politically impossible to do. Host thank you for your insights. Anthony, pikesville, maryland, independent line. Caller thank you for answering. Good morning to you. It is always a pleasure to see you sitting behind the desk. Im going to go down the line. This tribal warfare between democrats and republicans is really not good for the country. The republicans are hitting back at joe biden because of his son, they call it a conspiracy. They are doing it because trump broke the law. Anything he says should be taken with a box of salt, not just a grain. The major issue i saw last week was that georgia disappointed us. They should have went with more indictments but it is ok. They did what they thought was right. Theres an issue going on since Mitch Mcconnells freezing at the mike and i think it is important the nation looks at it. There really should be an amendment to the constitutional requirements that says you have to be any certain age to be a certain age to be elected. This should be a mandatory age for retirement and i think the agent should be 81. If youre sitting in the chair when you turn 81, you can finish out the term, but once you finish, you are done. You need to move on because the clarity of mind is the first thing to go, at least that is what my doctor tells me. Making these type decisions, very important decisions, cannot freeze about the mic. They cannot be confused as to what decisions they want to make. Not just for elderly people. It also happens to other people. To be good for the country, they should know when its time to step away from the party and go home. Host we got your point. Craig in florida, republican. You are on the washington journal. Caller my question is the bidens not sure all they money the money they spent, yet they need 20 shell corporations to launder the money. I did not know any legitimate businesses that have 20 shell corporations to launder their money. That is all i have to say. Host too bad our tax lawyer deborah who is going through the returns is not still on the line , maybe she would have a response for you on that. Allison in oracle, arizona. What is on your mind . Caller good morning. I want you to correct the young woman referring to archers under oath testimony said why was the president on the phone with his son, well, hunter was conducting business. That never happened. President biden was never on the phone. As Vice President , archer said that there were two lunch meetings he attended, one of which an orthodox priest was in attendance as well. I believe they were discussing Child Poverty at the meeting. Then there were over 20 years of his involvement with hunter. There may be about 10 or 20 phone calls when he checked in with hunter to see how he was doing. Let us remind the audience that i think it was 2015 or 2013, and his other son got sick and i think died in 2015. I do not know if you really were unaware of archers testimony but if you were, i am a little disappointed with that. I thought it was a Propaganda Machine and she works for them. Host she purposely worked for arch and she works for the Washington Examiner and we appreciate your comments. This is in the New York Times this morning. Im going to read a little bit of it. Thought you might be interested. Professor who was in the room where Foreign Policy happened, i do not know if we can see the picture, if you can identify in the picture, it was 20 minutes into the first class of the semester when a professor of Foreign Policy at Columbia University halted the lecture. I see the phones, i see the cameras, this is not a taylor swift concert, she said. To avoid further disruption, the professor offered students a fiveminute reprieve. They could raise their phones the photograph the celebrity coteacher standing on stage, newly minted professor Hillary Clinton. Quote this clinton noted as cameras focused on her is like the paparazzi my topic like Foreign Policy, she knows a great deal about. I feel good she said. But jittery. Like most enterprises embarked upon by mrs. The new job at columbia it may allow mrs. That is a little bit from the New York Times profile of professor Hillary Clinton at Columbia University. Dewayne, texas. Caller i just want cspan viewers to know the story about a five Police Officers supposedly slaughtered and murdered on january 6. Go google it. Died a stroke, Natural Causes with the medical report. The other officer committed suicide within the next nine months. Im not sure why. 120,000 kids missing that come over the border. 85,000 admitted by the government either involved in sex slave or working at a meat market. Anybody does not believe this administration is the most corrupt on the planet, they should go have a hair contest with joe biden. Host tom is getting the work, ohio. Republican. Caller i want to get back on the hunter biden think. Merrick garland like a democrat is lying and violating federal law. I am stunned it is possible we have to allow garland to openly violate federal law that clearly states as special counsel must be an outsider with no knowledge of or involvement with the defendant. David weiss has been with hunter for five years. We have to impeach garland. Host susan in south dakota. Democrat. Caller good morning and thank you. I want to say glory to ukraine. Continue our fight. I want to say bless President Biden for all that he is doing for our people unlike our previous president who happens to be in my state. It makes me sick he is. Our ridiculous governor who endorsed him and actually gave him 1000 rep. Cook of Mount Rushmore with his face on it 1000 replica of Mount Rushmore with his face on it. We need to focus on the fact that a previous president tried to overthrow our government. I want everybody to stop and think, that date january 6, he wanted to be in the capital with his arm people. Some kind of kings chair and take it all from us. We have to stand up strong and tall and not be distracted. I would like to call on all the politicians that are in office that believe in our democracy. Stand up. We have to be loud about this. I want to call on we are the world. Remember that song . Taylor swift was just mentioned. We are america and stand up for democracy. All these politicians, these big stars, put it together for us. Lets stand tall. Thats not stand for criminal who is a racist. Rapists criminal. This cannot happen in our country. Host john is next. Pennsylvania. Republican. What is on your mind . Caller good morning. It is time for republicans to put up or shut up. Break out the proof is that of the top instead of the talk. It is a diversion of what is really going on. It is all diversion. Host on your screen, tim miller, sarah longwell, and jonathan v. Last in that order. They are the cohost of the podcast called the next level. They work at the the bulwark. Guest it is a magazine we started after the Weekly Standard was shut down or being insufficiently protrump in 2019. We took some of the old Weekly Standard staff and new voices but it was people who had been republicans or conservatives their entire lives but were alarmed by trump and trumpism that have overtaken the Republican Party. Host does that describe your politics . Guest it describes my politics and all of us our politics are pretty different from each other but i think if you were to describe us you can check all of us as conservative or republican who jumped off of the train once trump entered the picture. Host lets ask some questions. We will take calls. Jonathan v. Last, what are the strengths that President Biden brings to his Reelection Campaign . Guest Unemployment Rate is very low. The economy by the objective numbers ok shape. America, peace and prosperity, which is typically good for your the danger is the age problem which just hangs over him. I think it is overblown but it is salient for voters which means whether or not it is a good argument, it is a real argument. The real historic nature of this is that it is the first time anybody two guys who have been president running against each other. The lack of there being rotary insurgent and having both of them become president s is the think i think makes that matchup hard to understand how it will play out in voters mind. Host tim miller, describe your politics and what you think republicans bring to the table in 2024. Guest sarah is trying to make me a republican. It was natural for me to hop off the train when insane far right, bigoted charlatan like donald trump became the nominee of the party, about to beat nominee of the party for the third time. I think the strength republicans bring to the primary, to the general election next year, mostly related to every day concerns about the economy. I think inflation come despite it is going down, persists as something frustrating for people. People who are budgeting. People who have not had an increase in their salary or their wages the last four years are spending more on groceries, restaurants, rent. I think that to be an issue for joe biden despite he won an overwhelmingly popular vote. It was narrow in the four states that determine the election. I think if you look at a likely rematch, that is the thing that worries me. Can trump get enough of a bump with noncollege workingclass voters to flip that narrow victory in swing states . Host sarah longwell, do you agree with tim that President Trumps renomination on the gop side is inevitable . Guest i think it is close to inevitable. I hate to say that when there are a lot of factors still out there. He has legal troubles. I think the reason many of us have come to the fruition notable is not about trump but his challengers. There does not seem to be anybody else who is rising to the occasion and capturing the imagination of Republican Voters. I think there is a bunch of mistakes these candidates made. Many try to run as either mini trumps like desantis and tried to wrestle trump for the hardcore base or they are trying to split the difference like nikki haley where she criticizes him a bit but otherwise talks about how he was a great president and tries to adopt some of the ways he also talks to the base, which makes her look was a bit funny. Because none of the candidates, the challengers present an alternative vision that is compelling, it looks like we have trump again. Guest i agree with that a little. It is also a bit about trump. Republican voters, 80 of them, like trump. He attempted a coup. He try to stay in power against the will of the people. You would think Republican Voters might have thought that was the time to take it off ramp, they did not. They took opposite. Trump took into the race with overwhelming positive because they like trump. Is upon us have been very weak but his upon his have been very weak but likely to be nominated again is because that is what the and voters want. Host this was a bit of news about nikki haley in a recent poll. Topping President Biden. She was the one republican topping jim him. Are we not talking about nikki haley enough . Guest i think were talking about nikki haley at the right level because she has no chance to be the nominee of the Republican Party. I do not think that she will not beat donald trump. She is not going to be desantis and she will not be Vice President. It is interesting to see she is pulling about biden but it echo something we saw the last pole we got out of iowa where they asked Republican Voters what do you care more about come have a somebody who can beat biden or someone, the phrase they use was in line with your aligned with your values. By huge margin of more than 20 points, the iowa voters said much more important have a candidate will be aligned with their values. Nikki showing she stronger against biden is another data point showing republicans our less adjusted in likability argument than they are getting more trump but also trump can win. I do not buy the argument he is the weakest general election republican can field. He turns out a low propensity voters who did not exist without him on the ticket. They do less about what he is not there because he brings out the slow information voters who will not show up for anybody but him. Because structural advantages of electoral college. He has at worst 30s chance of winning and closer to 5050 chance. Host i apologize for interrupting you. Go ahead. Guest i want to go back to fighting with him because theres a moment about there is a big chunk of the pocan party. I do focus group regularly. After the election of 2020 was dismal for trump, in the focus group there was a ton of desantis curiosity from the voters. They really thought it was time to move on for trump and interested in moving onto desantis. I think one of the big stories about this primary campaign is the total weakness of ron desantis when he became an actual candidate. The failure of his strategy which was there was this 35 of the Republican Party that was willing to move on, he couldve consolidated that group and moved into the camp of maybe trumpers. Instead he tried to wrestle trump for his base. That was a tactical error. I think it is important to emphasize and it is the genesis of the bulwark how much the Republican Party has changed from what it once was. The vast majority of the Republican Party either wants trump or Somebody Just like him. We will talk about ron desantis and interested in moving on from him, it was he is trump without the baggage or with a mute button or not on steroids. They still wanted trump in essence, they just wanted someone thought was maybe slightly more electable. I think that notion, idea Republican Party once somebody trumpy is the story of the Republican Party today. Host mike does give a speech in New Hampshire about populism versus conservatism. Tim scott running a classic reagan campaign. Why are they not catching . Guest tim scott is a 1 in the polls. The only ones that like him a rich, republican donors. Mike pence gives the speech of fighting for the saw the party will he is 6 of the polls and the others combined for 80 . It is not much of a fight. The three of us were on the field fighting for classically liberal side of the Republican Party. Mike pence name was on the Bumper Sticker fighting for the maga national this conspiratorial side of the party. The National Side already one. Mike pence was a fight this battle there are dead bodies over the battlefield already. Hes coming in eight years after the war. Host lets hear from tom in los angeles on the democrats line. You can see who you are on with their. Caller let me just say, huge bulwark fan. I commend three of my favorite hosts. Adhering to the washington journal dress code as i expect them to see. Jvl pointing out joe biden has a real electoral challenges. On the flipside, there is realism about understanding what you have in terms of candidates and what is a wish list. We are seeing the media fall into this thing we saw in 2000 and seven where you saw Hillary Clinton win every Single National president ial poll in 2007 by double digits. We all know how that inevitably faded. I am wondering if the media is trying to some kind of horserace when there is not necessarily a horse race. Great work. Looking forward to the next podcast. Host who wants to answer . Guest i will take it. It explains the vivek bump we got in the debate. The media is desperate for something other than biden because biden has been a boring president. He rides his bike and creates jobs and passes bipartisan bills. That is it. He not twitching at 2 00 in the morning. He is not threatening fire and fury at north korea. But he will be the nominee. The economy is objectively a very good place. He has been a solid president and he fee was 65 this would not be close and if he was 65 this would not be close. People come to terms with the agent or they will not and after they see trump every day dominated their televisions, they will either decide they want the guy who has gotten unemployment to the level it is at and past chips act and infrastructure bill or they will want the guy he was under 91 criminal indictments. At that point, yay, democracy. We get what we deserve. Host chris, republican. Caller mike pence has been more assertive lately. Who should he pick as his running mate . Also, i hope tim has a mimosa on ice. Guest go ahead, sarah. Guest i would say on the question of mike pence i would let him decide to the running mate should be but there is zero appetite for mike pence for public and voters. If theres been any think it is been there is no clear in the focus groups that are public and voters either think that is in this our spot with the voters were people think he is too close to trump or they think he betrayed trump over january 6. The likelihood of him catching fire is about zero. Even the people who kind of like him think he is boring and are not interested voting for him. Part of that is for people like mike pence, he built the permission structure for donald trump. He told people it was fine. You do not have to care about his the fact the Sexual Assault accusations. Voters had decided those things do not matter which means theyre not interested in a guy like mike pence who really takes who he is on his moral aptitude. Guest i think you should be he should take jack camp for his vp since he is running on the party that is dead. Guest i would be the only want to do this because they made fun of me for it about god bless mike pence because this nation owes him a debt of gratitude and for four years he was terrible and went along for everything, but he seems hes been performing a Public Service and has not do it perfectly but he has been great about it braver about it. Mike pence has my gratitude and i would be through if he caught fire and was the republican nominee. Host jonathan v. Last, who is your favorite president and then at sarah and tim. Guest joe biden. I would ask, stripping away ideology, a president in our lifetimes who has had a more successful first terms in terms of policy . I do not think theres much comparison. I think it is biden. Host sarah. Guest to be clear i think this a public and filled has been the republican field has been awful because they have been afraid to take on trump. The one person who is not you can put me with jbl when it comes to the general election. I would support jill biden. The one person i think running a good race is Chris Christie. We also fight about this one. Tim gets mad about is giving props to Chris Christie because hes another one who did enable trump and one of the few people it took a long time for anyone to criticize trump. Chris christie saying the things need to be said to a republican audience so i appreciate that about him. Guest when did you say jill biden has been Ronald Reagans third term . Guest maybe george h w second term. Chris christie . You cannot move on from that. He is not been running a good race. He brought us donald trump. He was the first mainstream public and to endorse donald trump. He took out marco rubio and endorse donald trump then apologizing for him for four years. I do not give Chris Christie any credit. The process republican to me will hurd and hes at 0 . Host carmen on the independent line. Caller hi. Tim my dad is from louisiana so i had to say it, go tigers. My question for all of you is, if you had to put money on it, who do you think will be in the primary come super tuesday . Guest that is a good question. Guest it is one where jvl and i argue because i think he thinks ron desantis would drop out early. I do not. I think it will be a money question i, i think the people who have money are going to be nikki haley, tim scott and ron desantis. I think those guys will be in the race super tuesday. Unless south carolina, it is possible someone cuts a deal with early phases with trump. I always thought tim scott could end up being a natural Vice President ial candidate for donald trump and if trump once whatever tim scotts 10 in south carolina, he could cut a deal going to those early races. Guest i agree with that but i would say of the names you listed, the one least likely to make it to super tuesday in desantis. If he is getting early on, he has to manage his decline in reputation and get out before bad gets worse. The guy i think will still be in it is ramaswamy because every vote he gives helps with prospects in the world. Guest are you excited for the minnesota primary for chuck versus ramaswamy . Get ready for that. Host will in minneapolis. Democrats flying. Caller hi. My question slightly related, marco rubio the primary here. In utah, trump did poorly. There seems to be certain groups immune the maga movement. Since january 6 i would describe as the f word. Are there things you have seen that make people more right to be drawn to a maga Totalitarian Movement . Im interested on the decades to decades level if you think this is going to keep going. Host tim miller. Guest i would give you demographics really quick. If you look at the math in Republican Party, collegeeducated republicans and mormons were more resilient than evangelical voters the noncollege white voters to be appeal of trumpism. I think demographically is two groups. Guest this is an open question and am not answering it so much as to thinking out loud. One of the things i look at a lot and think about a lot is decadence. The extent to which without an existential threat like we had during the cold war or even the mere clear present threat of terrorism following 9 11, the economy being as in very good shape since about 2008 to now, people have gotten a since politics is just about entertainment. If you think all sorts of crazy stuff, you can feel like split in babies, and donald trump still president controlling the military. There are no particle consequence is to it because life is good. As long as life continues to be good, there is no reason to think people will start being series about politics. Guest i feel remiss not to mention race. When i was doing interviews about my book. One trend i noticed was those of us during the obama era did not like obamas policies, had disagreements with him, but thought he was a good man, thought it was cool we had our first black president. We respected and admired. People who felt that weight was more resistant to trump. People who thought obama was uppity they went maga. Host carolyn, austell, georgia. Republican. Go ahead. Caller i have a few questions. I love trumps work. I am looking at host let her finish. Caller i love his work especially the i like he started that wall and i think that the president did not pitch as much into it. Im looking at his math. Maxine waters pokhara spoke out against him. You do not hear that speaking out against him as much. He did go after them and he did but i noticed that when they said something, he spoke out. I listen carefully. I am looking at the way we left afghanistan. Im looking at how we spend more money for oil. Crime is rampant. Defunding the police. Im also looking at host thats a lot on the table and we had three talkers so we will leave it at those issues. Really appreciate you calling in. The border wall. Afghanistan, oil, crime, defunding the police. Guest she started saying she got donna chop did a good job trump a good job but he lucked with an attack on the capital. I did not love jill bide joe biden the way he left afghanistan. The people wanted us to leave afghanistan. I thought it was managed poorly. All the rest of that, she liked trumps border wall. What border wall . He did not build the border wall. Im not for the border wall to begin with. We are a shining city on the hill. It is the point of the american experiment. He did not do it so hes not good at doing the best stuff he tried to do. Guest do you want me to take this answer, sarah . Guest go ahead. Guest you please take this one. Guest i agree with tim. In the focus group and listen to trump time voters, they think he was a great president. It is little bit mystifying because during his presidency, a Million People died of covid. He had an erotic strategy around the covid. He raised the debt by enormous amount. Im always a little bit surprised that people they think he did a good job. That is a very common response. People from Republican Voters i think the moment was saying she does not like his mouth which is also something you hear from a lot of voters but it is interesting people will say that. I did not like some of the things he says but i love his policies and i would say what policies. The America First policy so they mean he talked about immigration in a way they like which was tough. They liked the idea he was talking about shooting people coming across the border in be leg. He did not do much of the things he talked about and im surprised the people challenging him for the presidency did not talk more about his failures because otherwise it is just process the myth he did all this greatest of and he did very little. He passed one of massive tax cut that impacted the rich more than anybody else. Guest crime is down. Joe biden is when the biggest advocates for finding the police out there. That is a factual response. Host front page of the wall street journal this morning, gop searches for new message on abortion i had of 2024 ahead of 2024. Is that a fair statement . Guest yeah. I think the gop im not of the view abortion necessarily had to have been such a catastrophic issue for the gop. If you look at desantis, he was in florida with 15 week abortion ban and he comes back in the session and tries to pass a five week or six week abortion ban with no exceptions for rape. That is insane extreme position. Had republicans responded to the overturn of roe v. Wade with more reasonable restrictions like european styles restrictions on the bushes it would have been fine. They did not do that. Theres been a massive backlash. Trump is the one area where he senses that. Hes not going as far as desantis and others spite the fact he has extreme policies. Host david, democratic. Please go ahead with your question or comment. Caller good morning. Jvl i was hoping you could do the voice. Guest oh, no. Im sorry. I expect an active boy atta boy for my selfcontrol. Host the jet of you want to say . What is the cletus voice . Guest peter, thank you. On our show which is politics but we try to make it entertaining, i will occasionally do various characters. I do excellence, old southern lawyer like colonel sanders. I do cletus from the simpsons as well as skinny joey, a gentleman of italianamerican dissent from north jersey. For some reason, some of my cohost with blonde hair get very upset about two of those three voices. Host why does cletus upset you . Guest you know, as i say, i listen to people talk a lot and i respect these voters and they have diverse opinions. Jvl can be somewhat dismissive of some of the people and imitates them in ways i think the mocking is on board unkind. Guest we are all gods children. Guest some of us just have dumb opinions. Host rick, republican. Caller you three scare me to death. You are terribly wrong about so much of what was said and what you said was biden has created immigration, the largest migration in history of mankind. If you want to see what america is going to look like the next two years, look at new york city. Look at chicago. You are wrong. You give me that. Guest tell me more. Host i think we got your point. Lets get a response. Guest nick city has one of the lowest murderous rates in the country new york city has plenty lowest murderous rates in the country. This is america. We have always been a diverse and changing country. People want to come here. I think joe biden could have changed some things at the border. We should make it a lot easier for people to get here. One of the biggest problem is with inflation right now is we do not have enough workers to meet all the demand. It would be great to bring back the Guest Worker Program instead of ending that because of fear mongering and racism and Donald Trumps bs. I do not think the country is as scary as you think it is. Host how many people listen to the the next level . Guest so many people. We are on youtube where we have thousands who watch us on youtube. About 50,000 a week. We have a couple shows. Tim does a show that airs on the sunday show where he interviews guest and the three of us get together and talk politics every wednesday. People tune in various places and i hope you will too. Host lisa get together do you get physically together in room room when you say get together my did you get physically together in one room . Guest no, would not do that. Guest we do is sometimes. Guest the last time we did that, tim, gave us covid. Host charlie on independent line. Caller and [indiscernible] host i apologize. It is about a connection. Tom in baltimore. Democrat. Caller good morning. In maryland we have a an elected governor as heavily to mechanic state of maryland. He was talking about running for candidate for a republican for president and now hes toying with the idea of a third party. Any comment about larry hogan . Guest i love larry hogan. I think larry hogan i like him a lot. Heres the thing. He is doing something right now im not supportive of, deeply alarmed by, talking about the idea of running as a thirdparty candidate or toying with it but there is this group no labels talking about a thirdparty candidate with moderates and listen, i know we terrify some of your colors as they have said, but we are moderate comes interests, the three of us in various ways so somewhat like larry hogan or centrist party would be appealing to us if we are not dealing with the situation worse donald trump the most likely candidate and actually dangerous, antidemocracy candidate, who led a coup, would not engage in peaceful transfer of power the last time. A thirdparty candidate that would help donald trump. As we have noted, there is enthusiasm problems when it comes to joe biden and i think theres a section of the country that rather otherwise would vote for joe biden but instead happy to ditch out and go thirdparty for a moderate and that would ultimately reelect donald trump and i think the level of danger he presents should make people very cautious and very concerned about the idea of doing that would reelect him. I would appeal to Governor Hogan not to do that. He was a tremendous governor and he is a great guy. Host douglas, chicago. Republican. Caller first question mainly for sarah but anyone can jump in. You work on the podcasts. He talk about you talk about movies and a in references and the question to you, do you think it will ever be movie made about the republicans, sectional wrong, top a movie rom com type of movie . Host are you a long cabinet republican . Caller im not to am fascinated by the group but i fascinated by the group. Guest i thought it was going to be movie question but it is about long camping. Still my favorite movie. I was the head of the gay republican group, the board chair come up until the point trump became the republican the president and i resigned because i could not support him. I did make a documentary at one point about law cabinet and the way it was founded because it was deeply interesting story but i think it is a the story of gay republicans and the world they play in helping to bring gay marriage and advocate for it within the Republican Party as well as an appellate do not ask, do not tell as an axillary story and one that should be told in a more mainstream way. Host robert in greenville, north carolina. Go ahead. Independent line. Caller good morning. If we cannot take care of turberville, we should not talk about election. If democrats elect one idiot donald trump put in deceit, what he is doing to the country and the is putting us at, our greatest danger is donald trump, the Republican Party. Lets get that straight. It is not putin. It is donald trump in the Republican Party. They are not going to give up anything. Theyre going to do the country that the same thing again and ruled the country. Host lets go down the line. Guest i agree with him. I want to get to the republican line and hear about more people about please get about brown folks coming to america. I did not think it is democrats fault that turberville is in there. I think the doug jones race was a big outlier and took a pedophile is he moore being his opponent to get a democrat in there so maybe it can happen again but im not optimistic about alabama. Host sarah. Guest turberville is bad. What he is doing to military readiness by not allowing people to get confirmed, he is holding them up. It is terrible and i cannot believe this is the story of the Republican Party. Supposedly promilitary but they are doing nothing about the fact turberville is affecting military readiness. Public and voters in his state do not seem to be frustrated by this but they should be. This another way in which Republican Party purported to be one thing the military but their actions betrayed that. Guest you do not want any gay stuff on the boats, navy ships. Host jonathan, you get the last word. Guest we talk about the fundamental structural asymmetries in american politics and Tommy Tuberville and military the perfect example. We had a caller complained about joe biden dividing the police. Handful of progressives on twitter and cori bush agitated for defending the police. It it hurt democrats in the 2020 election. Strategist will tell you it is a real effect. Joe biden in favor of increasing funding in the police and he has done that. Voters do not seem to assimilate data. You get Tommy Tuberville who was trying to hurt the military readiness. I do not think any republicans are going to pay an electoral price for that because we have is fundamental between what people and voters expect from republicans and what they expect from democrats.
