i looked around and all of a sudden it was time to wake up. that's the case for you right now. 6:00 a.m. on a friday. i'm robin meade. thanks for joining us. get this story. two pilots missed their landing by 150 miles. everyone's okay. but you have to hear how the pilots explained the situation once they landed. mm-hmm. >> i hope they get you and i hope they make you pay for a long long time. you don't take from somebody -- >> the mother of a girl whose body was found in a landfill speaks to the killer. hear from one of the last people believed to have seen the little girl alive. >> and water fountains look so refreshing but they can make you sick. what micro buybiologists say about fountains and the flu. federal investigators want to know if a jet overshot the minneapolis airport by 150 miles because the pilots were distracted. a northwest airlines flight missed its destination on wednesday night. air traffic controllers could not contact them. they finally contacted the pilot after more than an hour but his answers were so vague they worried the plane may have been hijacked. the crew told authorities it was arguing over airline policy and didn't realize what happened. okay. the plane landed safely without passengers even knowing that anything had happened. an ntsb spokesperson says that it's looking into whether the pilots fell asleep. northwest is part of delta airlines. it issued a statement saying that it's cooperating with the faa and ntsb in their investigation as well as conducting our own internal investigation. now the pilots have been relieved from active flying pending the completion of these investigations. new this morning, the u.s. has formally asked switzerland to extradite director and fugitive roman polanski. that's the word from swiss officials. polanski has been a wanted man in the united states for more than 30 years after he pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. he fled the country before his sentencing. he was arrested in switzerland last month. the 7-year-old florida girl whose body was found in a landfill got into a fight in school the day she disappeared. according to a police report somer thompson's sister brought up the fight on the way home from school and somer got upset and ran off. that's the last time they saw her. her mom spoke to the killer. >> i want you to know that i will not sleep until this person is found. i hope they get you, and i hope they make you pay. for a long long time. you don't take from somebody. you didn't take her from just me. you took her from my family. you took her from all of these people, and you don't do this to a little baby and put my baby in the trash like she's nothing. that's not okay. that's not okay. >> well, the latest person or the last person to see somer appears to have been a young boy who lives nearby. he says that he saw her near a vacant house. >> she was just running so i thought she was excited but she had like a frown on her face. >> it's very sickening and it's scary. >> well detectives have been inside that house and a dumpster that is outside it. they have already interviewed 155 registered sex offenders who live in the area just outside jacksonville. authorities have not said how somer died. new york state health care workers do not have to get the vaccines for the flu after all. the state lifted its mandatory order because there's not enough vaccines. well, the governor says the state will have about only 23% of the h1n1 doses they thought they were going to have by the end of october. remember the workers union had sued over the mandate. new this morning a bridge and a water pipeline collapsed on a train. police say that at least one person was killed and six others are hurt. this happened in india. this video came in a few hours ago. the train was headed for mumbai. police say the crews are trying to reach a trapped train operator. sources say that after meeting at the white house senate democratic leaders may be leaning toward a public option but states could opt out if they choose. now some moderates don't like the public option but many democrats believe that it is the best way to fix the system. >> i think we have to have a public option in the final bill and it could be done in such a way that if you like the insurance you now have, keep the insurance you have. but if the public option has a better deal for you or a more affordable one, then go with that. that's what i want. i want competition in this bill. i want people to have a real choice, and i want especially a young working family thinking they have to drop their insurance because they can't pay for it to have something they can can afford. >> the house version will also probably include a public option. but three dozen moderate house democrats are threatening to vote against it unless they can be sure that it controls long-term costs. a public school is charging fees for the parents who pick up their kids late from school. an elementary school in portland announced the fines after a ten-minute grace period parents pay $5 for every 10 minutes they're late picking up their kid. some of the parents are outraged. >> that's harsh. i think there's something different they could do other than charge money. >> if i knew that was the case, i would definitely have to make sure that i had arrangements for them. >> it's about a tool the school can use to really keep kids from staying at school over and over and over. >> well, he adds there will be exceptions for parents with a legitimate excuse. i wonder what falls into legitimate excuse. flu season is here and water fountains may be a potential hiding spot for germs. how many mouths drink out after fountain before you did? our sister network cnn put a hidden camera near a water fountain. 14 people visited the foundtain an hour. now a kansas school shut down its water fountain at least until flu season ends, but a former cdc chief says people are just overreacting here. >> i don't think that's going to be very helpful or important in preventing flu. i think it's just common sense. let the water run a couple of seconds before you start drinking. don't touch the spout with your mouth and when you're done if you touch the bar to turn it on or off, clean your hands. >> a microbiologist known as dr. germ disagrees. he says the h1n1 virus can linger on fountains for hours and that they should be disinfected regularly. i don't mind them in places where there are adults because i think adults usually you would hope know how to drink out of a water fountain but remember going to school like elementary and high school and the kids don't know how to drink out of it and they've got water all over their face and their mouth is all over the water fountain. >> my kids i don't know everybody else's they're pitri dishes and they pass it on to you. we always used to have a cup at the gym. probably get sick anyway. what's up, robin? show you what's happening right now, a big-time storm system wrapping up through the great lakes and drug moisture out of the gulf of mexico. here is your cold front. judged nooet the clouds offering free shipping. free! free! our money expert jennifer westhoven is here. >> hello. we do these kind of stories here and on cnn, a lot of times we get really angry calls from the companies. >> why? >> because they don't want to have to give away free shipping. so i feel like this is really a case like it touches a raw nerve. you really are getting something for nothing, and sometimes it's hard on them but, look, you know, this may be the season you can take advantage. retailers, they really are counting on online sales to try to help them out. it could be good news in a bad economy when it comes to your holiday shopping. four out of five retailers are going to offer free shipping, sometimes with minimum purchases. that's according to the national retail federation, but more than half of them will offer it with no minimum order, so that means if you can find a better price online, it is a good deal if you can get that free shipping. not only is the president cracking down on executive pay at some firms that took billions in bailout money, now we're getting another step in terms of controlling pay. the federal reserve wants to review pay at the thousands of banks it oversees. now the fed's argument is we had to learn the hard way during the financial crisis but there are some companies that basically will pay a ceo to take huge risks that can be disastrous for the entire financial system and instead the fed wants to encourage safer more long-term rewards. that's a really interesting move, though robin, that they're looking to basically say we have power over pay not just for companies that took bailout money, everybody. >> that is. that is. all right. huge. jen, thank you. in our "salute to the troops" today it's from carrie langler to joshua woodard. they met four days before his company deployed overseas and even though they knew it would be difficult not to see each other for months they knew they had something special. she said she
