Across the country participated in a 20year anniversary of cspan studentcam documentary competition. We asked students, in the next 20 years, what is the most important change you would like to see in america . Or over the past 20 years, what has been the most important change in america . This month, we are featuring our top 21 winning entries. The High School West winners are 10th graders from palo alto senior high school, where cspan is available through comcast. Their winning documentary talks about fast fashion, the environmental impact, and what can be done about it entitled threads of change. In the intricate art of weaving, every threat is essential. Each strand, while small in its own, contributes to a greater design. Often. Our planet, the tapestry of life, has countless threads, each hoping to change our future, but the tapestry is fraying by the weight of our choices, challenges, and mistakes. Our tapestry can no longer sustain richness and diversity it once held. Our crisis is definitely the most pressing issue today. World leaders and activists have also sought a grand solution, such as the real earth summit in 1992. No other nation has laid out a specific plan of action, and that is why we insisted that the focus be on results, not rhetoric. The paris climate accords in 2016. With the same conviction that we need to sustain Equitable Development without in any way compromising the limited resources of our planet. However, Global Leaders have consistently fallen short in delivering results. An analysis in the nature journal found that they fail to achieve a fraction of the problems created, and many problems have increased emission. This, in addition, to fossil fuels at the most recent conference. And we, the people, have watched helplessly as temperatures Global Temperatures have increased a little more than one degree celsius. [indiscernible] how did the worlds deadliest wildfire have been with no warning. But if our governments lofty goals into big promises have not saved us, perhaps, it is time we shift our focus to empowering individual. We need to transform fear and disparity actionable oath, especially in the choices we make every day. Consider something most of us encounter daily, fast fashion. A relentless cycle of rapidly produced, cheap clothing, enabling Companies Like zara and shein almost so that jacket on last weeks cover of vogue echo it has vogue. Fast fashion relies on cheap manufacturing, frequent consumption, and shortlived garment use. The average american wears their clothing seven times before it is thrown out. The fashion industry is responsible for over 10 of Carbon Emissions and 20 of global waste. That means across the world, over hundred 20 Million Trees have been cut down for the production of fashion goods, genes which are made of denim. The longest time, it takes up a tent of water and energy to develop. It means the water and dye used to treat clothing ends up polluting water, making children sick and causing animals to go extinct at rates never seen before. But it is not just about water waste, landfills, or Carbon Emissions, it is about our choices as consumers because companies are going to respond to what market demands are, so as long as the consumers do not care, i dont think they are going to care. So if we wait for companies to put people on the planet before profit, we might never stop waiting until it is too late. So what can we do . Well, consider how nutritional has transformed our eating habits. We are now making choices that affect our health and the environment. What if clothing came with a similar, simple label, a tag that tells the tale of climate impact, from water consumption, carbon footprints, to durability. But it isnt just a label, it is a tool for empowerment, about giving individuals the information to make sustainable choices, to be part of a larger solution. I dont think you can ever go wrong by being a consumer advocate. And that has been one of the hallmarks of my legislative life. Imagine in the next 20 years, where every clothing choice contributes to a healthier planet. Where Consumer Empowerment has turned the tide on Climate Change because even though you are just one person when all those one people come together, they create a marketplace. They create a social consciousness. They create a public sensibility about what is and is not acceptable. If we the people change our habits, prioritize quality over quantity, we can start a movement. Hopefully, the consumers buying power and exercising choice will include the industry. People fighting for change created america. People fighting for change created a place where everyone has a dream. I have a dream. But we do not have to apologize to our grandchildren for not where we dont have to apologize to our grandchildren for having them wear a mask outside. As america looks forward the next 20 years, their task of significant change lies in the small steps, by recognizing the power of our collective action, we can turn the tide. This is a blueprint for a better tomorrow. I tapestry woven from our collective action. It is a story of empowering individuals. Together we have the power to weave the threads of change for a sustainable future. To watch this and all living entries, visit our website.
