[applause] mayor brown: we are here in the community center of the east side of buffalo. i want to thank candace, the executive director, and members of the board of directors, for hosting us today. beloved community, as mayor of the city of buffalo, on behalf of the more than 270,000 residents of our city, i want to extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family members of the victims of the vicious attack on our community. i want the family members to know that we love you, care about you went collectively, we are here to wrap our arms around you and help lift you up during this difficult time. this is a time of great pain and sorrow for all of us in buffalo. but we are trusting and leaning on god to get us through this dark and difficult time. we are very thankful that, in the midst of this darkness, we have a president and first lady who cared deeply about our community and communities all across the country. all across the country. president joe biden and first lady doctor jill are people with extraordinary compassion and empathy. they wanted to be here for this community. and wanted to help us with our process of healing and we are so thankful that they are here with us during this challenging time.as mayor it is my great honor and high privilege to introduce our president, joe biden and first ladydoctor jill by . [applause] before i begin, i would like to say a few words. >> i just wanted to say thank you to the family for opening up your hearts to us. and for letting us love you today. so god bless you and thank you for allowing usto be with you . [applause] >> majority leader schumer and senator joe legrand and congressman higgins , thank you for taking my callwhen i called . i'll never forget what she said. i said i like to come up if it's okay. she said this is big scranton,,. and i think you're doing a job thank you for your heart . and mayor brown you been wonderful. thank you and i know this is a lot whether vice presidential or presidential she shows up so there's all kinds ofparaphernalia and people . i know it's not easy. i want to thank your law enforcement officers not just for what they did in this crisis but for accommodating us and all the elected officials and law enforcement officers , first responders and faith leaders here today. jill and i have come to stand with you and to the families we come to grief with you. it's not the same but we know a little bit what it's liketo lose a piece of your soul . to lose a son or daughter or husband or wife, mother or father. the feeling of having that as i said some of you that we talked privately you feel like there's a black hole in your chest and you're being sucked in and you're suffocating. you're unable to breathe. that's what it felt like at least to us and i'm sure some version of it feels like that way to you and, the pain. the depth of the loss so profound. and we know it's hard to believe and you're probably not going to believe but i can tell you now from personal experience and many others who we met today is going to, that we and it will, when your loved one brings a smile as you remember him or her. as you remember her is going to bring a smile and a tear to your eye. it takes a while for that to happen. it takes a wild. it might take more than a season but our prayer for you is that that time comes sooner than later but i promise you it will come. as a nation we say to the families we remember them. we visit the memorial where they show love for them bythe supermarket . and phyllis cheney, 65 years old.churchgoers, tango player. went to buy strawberries to make herfavorite shortcake . loving mother and grandmother . roberta drury, 32, beloved daughter and sister who moved back home to take care of her brother. she went to buy groceries for dinner . the center of attention who made everyone in the room laugh and smile. andre mackniel, went to buy his three-year-old son birthday cake . imagine his son on his birthday asking where his dad is. catherine many, 72. a writer and an advocate who dressed up in costumes that schools and cut the grass in the park and help with local elections. the glue of the family and the community. marcus morrison, 52, schoolbus eight. went to buysnacks for weekly movie night with the family . survived by his wife and three children and his stepdaughter . the center oftheir world . [audio lost]. retired buffalo police officer, three decades. three decades. love electric cars, i hero who gave his life to save others . and had that man not been wearing that best, that bulletproof vest a lot of lives would have been saved. a beloved father and husband. geraldine talley, 62. expert banker known for her warm gentle personality. friends to everybody, devoted mother andgrandmother . drew whitfield 88. wife, mother, grandmother. played in the church choir caretaker of her husband. bringing him clean clothes, cutting his hair, holding his hand every day she visited him in the nursing home . perl young 77. mother, grandmother, missionary of god. public school teacher. also ran a local food pantry. loved singing, dancing and her family. and all three are injured, ziad goodman. shot in the neck fighting through it. jennifer warrington 50, christopher braden 55. both treated with injuries with a long road to recovery. individual lives, loves and service to the community the bigger story ofwho we are as americans . a great nation because we're a good people. jill and i bring you this message from the in our nation's soul. and america evil will not win. i promise you. he will not prevail. white supremacy will not have the last word. but evil did come to buffalo. it's come to all too many places . manifesting gunmen who massacred innocent people in the name of hateful perverse ideology rooted in fear and racism. it's taken so much. 10 lives cut short in a grocery store.three others wounded by this hate filled individual good driven 200 miles from binghamton to carry out a murderous racist rampage that he would live stream to the world. what happened here is simple and straightforward. terrorism. domestic terrorism. violence inflicted in the service of hate and a vicious thirst for power that defines a whole group of people as inherently inferior to any other . hate spread through the media and politics and internet has radicalized angry alienated lost and isolated individuals into falsely believing that they will be replaced. that's the word, replaced by the other. by people who don't look like them. and who are therefore in their perverse ideology lesser beings. i and all of you reject the lie and we call on all americans to reject the lie and condemn those who spread the lie for power, political gain and for profit. [applause] that's what it is. we've now seen so many times deadly violence and what it unleashes. we've heard the chants, you will not replace us in charlottesville virginia . i wasn't going to run as the senator knows for president but when i saw those people coming out of the woods and the fields in virginia, in charlottesville carrying torches, shouting you will not replace us helped by white supremacists and carrying nazi banners, that's when i said no. number and i honest to god those who knew me i wasn't going to run for certain. but i was going to be darned if i was going to let that get going. look, we've seen the mass shootings incharleston south carolina , pittsburgh. last year in atlanta, this week in dallas texas and now in buffalo. buffalo new york. white supremacy is apoison . it's a poison running through. it really is. [applause] running through our body politic and it's been allowed to fester and grow right infront of our eyes . no more. we need to's say as clearly and forcibly as we can at the ideology of white supremacy has no place in america. none. and look, it's fair for us to say nothing is complicity. silence is complicity. we cannot remain silent. a nation's strength has always come from the idea, what's the idea of our nation? we are all children of god. our universal good, gifts of god we didn't get it from them, we got itbecause we exist . we were called upon to defend them. the venom of the haters and weapons of war, the violence and words and deeds that stalk our streets and stores, our schools. this venom cannot be the story of our time. it we cannot allow that to happen. look, i'm not nacve.i know the tragedy will happen again. we cannot forever overcome. it cannot be fully understood either. but there are certain things we can do. we can keep assault weapons of ourstreets . we've done it before. i did it when we passed the bill last time and shootings went down. you can't prevent people from being radicalized but we can address the relentless exploitation of the internet to recruit and mobilize terrorism. we just need to have the duty to do that, to stand up. the american experiment in democracy is in danger like it hasn't been in my lifetime . it's in danger this hour. hate and fear are being given too much oxygen bythose who pretend to love america . who don't understand america. to confront the ideology of hate requires carrying on the all people . not makingdistinctions . in the scripture seeing that we're all part of the divine. love thyneighbor as thyself . that's the america i know. and most deserve, look. we're the most multiracial most dynamic nation in the history of the world . now is the time for the people of all races from every background to speak up as the majority of americans. these actions we've seen and these hate filled attacks represent the views of a hateful minority. we can't allow them to distort the real america. wecan't allow them to destroy the soul of the nation . as president of the united states i travel the world all the time . and other nations asked me, heads of state and other countries ask me what's going on? what in god's name happened january 6, whathappened in buffalo ? we have to refuse to live in a country where black people going about a weekly grocery shopping can begun to down by weapons of war deployed in a racist cause. we have to refuse to live in a country wherefear and lies are packaged for power and for profit . we must all enlist in this great cause of america. this is work that requires all of us, presidents, politicians, commentators, citizens. none of us can stay on the sidelines. we have to resolve that here in buffalo and from the tragedy, this tragedy will come hope andlight and life . it has to. not on our watch the sacred cause of america will never bow, never been. the america we love, the one we love will endure. so to the families may we find purpose. to live a life worthy of the loved ones you lost. from a hymn based on the 91st psalm song in my church, may he raise you up on eagles wings and bury you on the breath of don. need you to shine like the sun. and old you in the palm ofhis hand . that's my wish. we can do this if we resolve to do it. if we take on the haters and those who don't even care beyond politics and profit. and the soul of the fallen rest in peace and rising glory. and may god guide you in the united states of america now and always. to the families as my grandpa used to say when i walked to his home in scranton he's a jolly spreadthe faith . and my grandmother would yell no joey, he's a heap of faith and my grandmother would say spread the faith. thinking of you. hold on to each other. stick together. we'll get through this. we will make buffalo and the united states a better place to live .
