It attests to the existence of reality, the reality of truth, the truth of evidence. Why did these values mat smer excellenceence does in Television Political journalism make . So were not educated well essary to perform the nec act of sleek our leaders for the future. We have got to improve that going to bend it is to a large degree up to us in television and radio in broadcasting to get that job done. If we fail at that, our democracy and our republic is, i think, in serious danger. There is more Fact Checking than ever. Fewer people trusting the fact. Are we moving more into media cli. An do you have any welcomes about skagg foreign government, anybody, to sper fer, to hack into a system of anybodys in this country . Let the president talk. Does that not give you us . It gives me no pause. Hey. You know what gives me more in ourthat a person government, crooked Hillary Clinton. Be quiet. I know you want to sab her. That a person in our government, rid, would delete, or get of 33,000 emails. Think that what be got here is a case of overclassification. I am not concerned about it. I am not worried about it. No democrat or american should be either. [applause] there was no permission to be asked. I had been done bay my predecessors. I was permitted. He didnt have to ask anyone. Was this true . Was Hillary Clintons use of a private email serve for official business whole she was secretary of state absolutely permitted . No. That is not true. Look, Hillary Clinton is no friend of the media. But donald trump is different. Trump thought the preves legitimacy, in credibility, he claimed the Corporate Media as part of a massive conspiracy against him. I am not running against crooked Hillary Clinton. I am running against the crooked media. That is what i am running against. No question about it. Please. Excuse me. Sit down. It down. No. I am a reporter. I am immigrant. I have the right to ask a question. No, you dont. You have not been called. I have a right to ask a question. Go back to yoon ny vision. The most beautiful story about bc. T a lie it wases from n she is back there. Little katy. She is back there. What a lie it was. No. What a lie. Katy tur. The rest of the crowd was just and pri. They were angry. At the end of it, at the end of it, one of trumps people there, uy andsecret service g said, he will walk towel the car. It was not about you. Get out. I am a u. S. Citizen, too. Well, whatever. Univision, no. It is not but. It is no about you. It about the united states. It is. Peddle sod much nothings. A moreurnalist did take forceful approach. Debunking the falsehood. If you are saying he cannot do his job because of his race, he is is that not the definition of racism . I done think so at all. Take a look at the crime that is being committed. Go take a look. The crime is that i did not matter. The research, which is independent. You are a naive person. Quit being naive. Mexico will pay for that what. What do you think . I will not pay for that beep wall. He should pay for it. He has the money. The notion this is a murder, fiction born dilution, and contracted by evidence reviewed in at least six investigations, one of them by ken starr. Hard lay bill clinton defender. Otherwise, ry ridiculous and shameful, gain, this is not a pro clinton position or antitrump position, it is a pro truth position. Only 14 of the republicans say they trust the news media this year. I want to bring back our panel and talk about this. Most importantly, talk about what journalists and what come men tatter what we can do in the media to got the numbers back up. Every day, we can either remain the Peoples Trust or lose even more of it. [applause] a few days ago, i called the fake news the enemy of the people and they are. They are the enemy of the people. Please join me. [applause] so we have the pleasure of the winners in our National Categories winning for individual achievement in National Journalism, jorge ramos, jake tapper and katy tur nal the western for natio network news program is cnns t briane sources with hos stelter. You welcomed them warmly, but why not do it again . [applause] in a little while, we will have a chance to thank and sab what else they want to say, but right now, i would love to dig in to what we have been talking at we are the life th living. Just start by noting a contrast between what Walter Cronkite said in that opening, in which he described the press as the allies of democracy. The protectors of our freedom. The key role in, in making the public able to choose its leaders, and then, at the end, the press has the enemies of the people. So what happened . What is going on when the press is called the enemies of the people . What is the agenda . Consequence . And are you the enemies of the people . This is a junk ball but i would love each of to you have a chance at it. Will take it. So obviously, we are not the minutes of the people. I think it is farley obvious at this point that the goal is to undermine and criticize. The president and his team have erently butigns diff with the same goal against legislative oversight, against the Judicial Branch, but obviously, most unfortunately, against us, and the goal is so provide a check, that check that is so enshrined in the First Amendment, it is ineffective. And you know, we see that, it is working to a degree. There is a poll out this week, abc News Washington post, that showed that 32 of the country obamaes that president relied on donald trump and his campaign and 52 percent of republicans believe that. It doesnt matter that paul ryan says there is no evidence of that or james comey or devin nunes, all three of whom said the tweets have no basis or factor evidence. So undermining us allows him to say or do whatever he wantings and tick off enough people to make ineffective the checkers balances we attempt to provide, utlandish claims that, you know, may not actually mean that much like this one against president obama, but what he wants to do with this country, which you know, i am sure i speak for everybody. He we want to cover in a fair and impartial way but the other stuff keeps getting in the way of that. Agos, our do have by job is to put those aside, and fairly. And we have any buy is a, it is a bias toward the fact president . It is not because we are rooting for Hillary Clinton or donald trump be where or whatever. We are rooting for the democracy we live in. That democracy, its foundation, it is shared, but also, adherence to truth. Mistake, donald trump is not the first president or candidate or politician to not like the press. There is longstanding tensions between us and those in power. First one to go so unbarbedly and forcefully m pan agaps us. Al he was campaigning against Hillary Clinton but really he us whichpaning against is what he admitted. He didnt care that that was out there. He wanted that to be throughout because as jake was saying so eloquently, if we report something that doesnt, that is not friendly toward him, if he undercuts the credibility, if he ates froms, he inocul the criticism. He can do whatever he wants. Most based to the fearance the most base and thations and anger worked for him partially because trust in thehave a preens longer and they were sick of washington. They felt left behind. He got up there. He said outrageous things and refused to apologize for it. He allowed people to feel like they can take control of their lives again. They can do what they want again them they can yell at the top of their lungs if they want and somebody will finally hear them. Where that grows here, well, that is a good question. I am glad to be reminded of that soundbite where he said, i am fighting you. I am battling you. I think, we have seen that again even this week in some ways. That the president wants the war the press. And some of the aides described him that way. Of course, the ground was very fertile for this in 2015 so it is why the first time i saw you on the campaign trail two weeks after trump announced in new hampshire. He was already picking you on the crowd and already calling you out boy name and complaining about the press. This was when he was having small are events before was having rally. The ground was if you are tile for it because of decades of criticism of the press mostly from the right and the left. But largely from the right so the ground was so fertile for someone to come along and take the subtexan turn it to the texan to say bluntly what others were saying softly and this idea of campaign against the press, you know, we can the the ground work for decades in the past and, and for reasons, it was trump who took it to such a level. Nt enemies people in is not the bias. Liberal. It is something that cuts deeper. Well, it wases with. We were criticizing him. Firsti, i think the respects as journalists, real think, we wish it would, i understanded that. Then there is a second level. He most important social responsible we have the challenges to question those who are in power. We have a president who lies. We have a president who may racist, sics remarks. We have a president who criticizes judges and the press. We have a president who bea haivs like a bully during the campaign and then, we cannot remain neutral. I think on certain occasions, we have to take offense and it is my decision when it comes to race im, discrimination, ies, theon, fub blick l violation of human rights. We have to take a stand. I know that. I know that many people believe that completely right in the middle. Well, he was not. He was not during. R andg the second world wa the civil rights movement. Hek to a stand. Well, i will show them to you later. But the important thing is that, that if the president said look, weat are not, remain now tral with trump, think. We normalize the behavior. He is not an example, not even for schoolchildren, and it is our responsibility to be critical, that is it. That is what. That is journalism. Ch weere is a sense end whi is not just criticizing your particular criticism of him that he is criticizing the enterprise journalism . Attempting to delig git my. That is an important point. It is so far beyond. Enemies of the people. He only said a couple of times but did say out loud and on twitter. It is about dismissing the existence of a press that can report fairly on the presidency. Now maybe because he has not been out unrecent weeks hp we shouldnt take him. We can remind him. It was during the time. Buy is in so far as it relates to him. This is not a free press that he is doing journalism across the board. He will uphold journalism when it benefits him and retweet Washington Post articles even though he says that the Washington Post is full of a bunch of liars the same thing with the new york times. He doesnt hate the press. He hates coverage of him. Period. He is doing nine interviews this week that i counted in including three today. Another one tomorrow. Then he is bringing on the plane in pens vein are a. We accumulated the evidence of his love of journalist when it is convenient. Love of attention a better word. I wonder if we relate. This is nothing new. Everybody is criticizing President Trump right now. But remember, on june 16th, 2015, he said that mexican immigrants were criminals and drug traffickers and rapist. The reaction was huge. Well, that is the reason why i am on the campaign because i that. Ories about the reaction from the general public was little bit more mute, perspective. Nn we covered it. We gave him tons of time. I dont think we were critical enough of President Trump at the beginning when he was criticizing mexican immigrants. That this, when we saw horrible, access hollywood. Things started to change. But at the beginning, we were not as critical as we should have been. You are saying criticized. Think i would say report what is we have been doing. What most of the Mainstream Press has been doing is reporting not criticize. Yet there is a rite call tone and many, many critical guests way, think you see, by the one of the benefits of 2016, 2017 is the existence of hundreds of real news outlets with different perspectives and ways going about it. I would not autos the word criticize the dwy. Alli think it fires say that four of us draw loons at different places and have different takes. Jorge is different than katy and brian. We have different views of these things. I doubt there is any yawn form way of looking at President Trump. Draw a line at a different place than jorge goes does. That is fine. I respect. I am assume he respects mine. President view of trump report is that, i cover him as i cover him. As i would cover any president. And when i feel that there is ofavior that violates norms decency or truth, i will come out and say it. He dont view everything through that prism. When says cnn is fake news, that is a cracker attack . What is happening in that ex change in. I think, first of all, i should say that, that all of all the things that President Trump has said in the last year and a half, attacking cnn, is very low on my list of what phoned me personally. What offended me personally. I was far more personally offended when he made fun of the reporter and belittled the five and a half years that senator he p. O. W. Campn t and now we are on a list. Will not keep going. I dont know if you have noticed. We have been criticized for that. Not a lot of republicans supported him in the campaign, canad to find people who manage his campaign. We have that from that respect. Payingthink from surrogates whose job it is to deliver the talking points of the administration, the bank that putting them in a cold equal position with everyone else on that panel is traditional, standard journalism . I dont think that is what we have. Lieutenant governor who was on my show less. He is a trump supporter but he h everything he says. Mcgovern lost. Something like that. It may have been rated, i forget. I forg it would have been easier ifet. Someone else had been the nominee. I think you have to make an effort to find people who support President Trump. I am missing that much of a difference when it comes to whong a democratic pundit shares his or her views as though he is reciting talking points. As somebody who supports oprah, i do not see that much of a difference. He is not only among but should we be neutral all the time . Be. Not think we should this is what i get from Walter Cronkite. Wrote in early had i reported a bomb that just gotten back. , ife was a lack of activity there is a lack of integrity then we failed. This is walter crockett. He used the term fair and balanced . [laughter] he said for the nazis. Grexit is wonderful that that came from him. He spoke about human decency, basic human decency, world war ii had everything so clearcut. Nothing could rescue the south from itself. Walter cronkite when it comes to vietnam, when it comes to the civil rights movement, he put neutrality aside because neutrality was not an option. Let me ask you if i may. I am sorry. [laughter] do you think that the position that the media should not be neutral towards President Trump . I dont think you do a sender coverage. We saw this in the last 100 days, 44 times in which he criminalized or demonized an issue we care about. You dont assume just because he takes a position on korea or nafta that he is wrong . Absolutely not. Poetry comes to his racist beliefs but with Walter Cronkite and cutting through and not be neutral with the circumstances. I think there is a reason he cut through and the other examples you can pull. These journalists who took a stand, it is because of the level of rhetoric was not up here all of the time. And the levelng of vitriol against donald trump is always on. What he says, you have to come through here and say this is what he is actually saying. It is appalling or actually very dangerous or it is not as important because if everything is up there we cannot. People on twitter are saying then one roundr, of google this is something they have talked about for decades. That is an important point. I am sure everyone agrees with give them we cannot the ammunition. That thingsoint out are appalling, that everything is appalling. Let me try something out that is appalling all the time. Where being neutral is dangerous. That is the idea that facts dont matter, you can make things up. No. I was on the campaign, no twitter, everything blurs together. I tweeted something factual that this is what he said. Said who are you to decide what the facts are, we are here to decide the facts. Is emblematic of what we saw on the campaign trail, he did not they did not care what he said. They did not care that he was inconsistent, they dont care about the wall, they dont care about what he does. Still largely believed this, that he will make decisions that are best for the country. Instances ofthese things in the wind blow away. If that is the case, why brother correct in that . I dont believe we are in this post fact world. Us agree toof debate. There are alternative realities. There are two alternative i think what you are describing about is a reporter who is with him the matter what. That is a emotional guttural reaction that we do not always have a good representation on television. Trying to understand the emotional reaction to any president , right now President Trump there were some similarities to president obama. Trump, i it is about am finding myself on television is not ways to say it about the specific policies, it is something about seeing him in the oval office. Course with his posttruth, post fact, it is only because we allow it to be. There is this alternative reality that we may label, with some folks looking at a different set of facts, it does not mean we are in a post fact world. There has been a lot of attention on Trump Supporters to my think it is good because the that does needte to get out of their bubble. Minority groups of the electorate, they believe everything he says. The reason why facts matter, it is because when he says something about the u. S. Armada going to korea and it is not. Of the majorse issue with their election. That vaccinests cause autism despite the medical Community Say that is not true please do not say that or people are going to start getting any positions. I could have a life or death consequence. Matter, 18 of the people dont seem to care. Beholdenpposed to be to people who do not have respect for Empirical Data or facts. That theretrike you is this campaign to delegitimize the empire of factfinding and evidence . That is what they use is all about. Do people wake up and do this, i think they are trying to get through the day. Is at know if there concerted effort about facts not mattering. There are a lot of falsehoods being thrown around. Again when you check facebook or twitter, check cnn or tv. We did not know who was on the truth. We have to measure trump, when he lies he is talking about not only obama but the 5 Million Immigrants which is ridiculous of course. They voted in all of the wrong states. It is a whole conspiracy. It would be half of the population in one vote. It is credibility. Journalists iome hope. They are telling you the truth. With the credibility of is reallytrump, it difficult because if he decides to get into a war with north korea. Happened with george w. Bush and the renault wmds. Changed even though he was not see this. What happens to donald trump if he decides to bomb syria. It is dangerous. Poll for a new cnn president that is already unpopular to go to such an unprecedented degree. It is staggering. We have a poll number i think it was monday night the percentage of americans who think that he is honest and trustworthy is 37 . That is fewer than the people who voted for him. That is a horrible number for president. If i was him or on his team, i would really work on stopping with the falsehood and stopping with these claims. Rebuilt, thee American People are forgiving people. But is in this report. The trusted tv news . Said they do not have a great deal of trust in tv news. Congress was at 9 . [laughter] but the reelection rate of congress is 96 . Issue is a lot of people hate media but they have their channel. They can go for a whole host of things. Just trust media, they do not trust the same media. Loyal supporter of donald trump who thinks cnn is trump does trust breitbart or info wars. What i find myself doing is trying to reach over the various files and how to improve trust between those different levels. Is the of the distrust medias fault. I think that is fair to say. Been in the last decade alone a number of scandals where people and the media were not telling the truth. Think that election coverage in general, we are all too reliant on a point that is faulty. That thea reason public demanded skepticism, i think with twitter, i am not sully myself. I think it is fantastic for the media and it other cases it is bad. If you have this machine that allows you to convey every emotion i dont think it is good for President Trump to get into that insult or with reporters. I think there are a lot of reasons why the media still has a lot of work to do. We need to make sure that we work with President Trump and his administration, especially because he is so targeted, we need to have every word, every letter needs to be right. We need to make sure we gave the administration ample time to respond to the story, i think it is a perilous time. We need to rise to the occasion. We also need to moderate ourselves and make sure we are not being alarmist about certain things. I want to talk about rebuilding our trust, it is kind of like teaching a 17 euro to read. You need to teach it for europe. Whatever. [laughter] we should be teaching journalism in school, early making an effort to teach what journal of iism is. I am not the first one to say it. After the 72 it donttion that people understand the media, they do not read enough. You cannot just turn off the television, you have to get out the newd read not only york times but also the Opinion Pieces and to find out all of the viewpoints on a subject. It should be taught to our children, so that they it is and why important part of our democracy. That is how we are going to rebuild our trust. We have to build from the bottom up. There were instances in that video and in your coverage of where you arenths interviewing the president for example and he says something that is not true. What do you do . And try to get him to explain where he got the information or say that is not true. Him is he isut slippery. He will not answer a question. He will spin and spin in circles. It is a word salad that he will throw out. Questionnue to ask the , you can spend an entire interview asking one question. You can ask them 23 times. Judge interview about the was in june and that was the last time he let me interview him. I love that. You made it to june i did not get that far. He had made a comment to the wall street journal the night about how the trial cannot be fair because he is mexican. Even though the judges american. Obviously though of mexican heritage. I came with a sheet of questions that i knew that was the most important question. Because that was such an outrageous comments. Nd on the face racist i guess technically, xenophobia. I had to get through it. Slippery, itall it is more like a barge. A battering ram. Have their own ways of avoiding questions. Way, afterwards he was very lovely and person. With the press conference where he told me to be quiet, he looked at me smiled and said thank you. He is a personable person. Think to a degree it is theater, he understands ratings. I had an item about this over the weekend, why would i get rid of sean spicer, he gets good ratings. He likes the giveandtake. He does think it is good theater, he enjoys this. That is why he kept doing press conferences and that is what he is not stopping this. Now he is concerned about the hower of north korea with he was 27. The important thing when we decided that it is important to to doo drop, we decided this, we knew about donald trump. We had a plan we were going to ask the questions and not step down. That way everybody could listen. Id would not let him finish until i would as the question. That is the only way. You did alternately get to ask a question . Id saw him outside the press and his press person as if i wanted to go back mr. Mark i said i would go back with the condition that i am allowed to talk. We spoke for almost 10 minutes. He said it will and i said thank you very much. [laughter] is there a sense in which he got the nomination by gaming the Business Model of the news media. Selling dependent on iphones to advertisers and he was reliably entertaining, get this. He does cause i think that is what his strategy was. Said i will watch it. T is a good question there were 16 republicans who did not learn from this. What are they going to do . [indiscernible] going to have these unpredictable answers. There is this idea, it makes me so angry that these republican campaigns complain about how much time he got. He did interviews, he agreed to do interviews. He stopped her and then after he got the nomination. We would ask for marco rubio, jeb bush, ted cruz and all of the others become a television and they would not do it. They did it in a very oldschool way. They would do it on their time and on their terms. When we had a message to get out there. Meanwhile he is appearing on all five or six sunday shows. He would be going on these Television Shows more than any other republican candidates combined. I do think it is about being interesting or being provocative, that was certainly a part of the appeal. , it is showingp up when everyone was so busy raising money and he was not really. He subscribed to a new model of running for president. On the clip that we ended the, you are talking about press regaining trust. What good ideas have you heard . This is the hard part. I think we were discussing earlier some of the attributes. They were referring to various scandals about the attention involving plagiarism and exaggerating this journalism. Those are real scandals and real magnifiednd they are by part partisans who want to we have seen President Trump charlie dent with things that were not. Things of would be condemned for weeks on end. It is the basics about fairness. The other thing we can hear about is transparency. Social media has encouraged the industry to be more acceptable and forthcoming and open. It does not mean just using facebook and twitter, the you stay to the viewer rated at think that changes with delivery. It is in part influenced by the , maybe these are all small steps. Talkingwe should be about the media but there are people who are going to try to tear it down. There are websites that benefit from this. Think about Sean Hannitys show . He is a and a media show. In his own way it is. It is a form of poison. Did you say a form of poison . Yes, that is a form of poison. Trickles in the bloodstream, i do not think we know what the impact is yet. We are starting to see the with the regard to trust in media it is getting more severe. Trust weed to regain need to recognize how severe the places withrom their own selfish reasons. Is it me ask each of you its own poison . I am the media reporter think we need to build our credibility back. I had all of these thoughts while he was talking and now they are gone. To build up and support our local news. It is incredibly important in this country, if we think that our budgets have been slashed, they are barebones at local news departments. They barely have anyone to get there shows on the air. They are talking to Everyday Americans every day. With more of these major cities, i think by supporting our local news ventures, we are encouraging them that and we will benefit. As much as donald trump us to take us down, you connect a crazy about it all the time. You need to be even keeled and brush it off. Be as fair as you possibly can be and be partial to the truth. May i disagree . Sure. I think we have to get it right. And then who is going to trust us . A second label. There is the responsibility that we have. It is our role, if we do not do i dont disagree with that. Our position has to be much more aggressive. , if we dont question the president if we dont question his act. Who is going to do it . Usa we are a standard for the democrats . I did this with president obama, with trump, we should not. E partisan but it is our role i see the interviews on the bbc they are tough on everyone. I think that is our role, if we do not do that nobody else will. If we do it then people will trust us. I do think we need to stand up for the facts. I dont think you are disagreeing, i think one of the viewers maysome have is that they may see a much , he adversarial approach would call out barack obama for his broken promise. I can attest to that. Viewers and saw not see this as unfounded criticism. I think there were more than densities in 100 days that i can remember. But that said i think we should the the attitude for Chelsea Clinton administration. Think we have to be on the other side. Basically means we have to be on the other side of power. We have to be friends or enemies of the president , i would rather be an enemy. To bolsterot trying your personal worldview. Absolutely. Fair and do it for one side or the other. I do not have an answer to this, is that enough . Arent we all struggling with , the folks that left them all behind. Increasinglyre believing their own sets of facts. When they see journalist challenging the president that puts them further away. That is the part i dont have the answer for. Mythis something that is a , it is part of the hannitys of the world, they are locked in those cells. I interviewed trump for the weekend, how many of those interviews . Lets see how many of those interviews are really challenging . Others are cbs. It is going to be interesting to see how many of them are really tough on trump. I think we know. There is a fox interview tonight. Ok. [laughter] he says a lot of things that are not true, people in the conservative Media Support that. That is bad and it is bad for a thriving democracy. Also seen a lot of evidence free stuff that is out there against donald trump. Daycongresswoman the other making some allegations about Jason Chaffetz retiring which is based on ludicrous rumor mongering. That fake news is driving on the right, it is on the left as well. It needs to be called out there as well. I think there is this fear mongering and speculation based on fever there is but no presentation of the facts. A lot of this is thriving because of twitter. I can hear people accusing me on twitter right now. I have no idea who is doing it more. I am not saying they are equal what, on either side. Is there a danger in criticism or being an adversary that should be brought to a partisan response . They do that with voicing a party. We have to show them the same thing. Can i go back to cronkite . [laughter] are in a terrible decision that we are and the fire. It is nothing new. Television began to be on the fire. They became some of the correspondence sometimes felt like the soldiers behind enemy lines. That is how they felt. Reason for a state to be alarmed, during the obama era he used the espionage act to go after leakers. Is worse than every president before him, he went on to demonize an entire network. I am not saying that this anchor or this show, or this reporter but an entire network was not a legitimate news source. I am not saying it is equivalent but i was not a fan of that. . Is there a danger . I was called a rightwing hack for years, now people with cancer celebrating me. You dont like the pink hat reference . The image it called to mind get your mind out of the gutter. I am honored to be here. Modelss have been role for much longer than you know. This is a truly tremendous hope that we find a way to regain the trust. Ourpe we find a way to have rhetoric cool down. I think we need luck. The government should have the power of the press. I dont know if i should admit this, i genuinely first i was spicerscnn with sean rant. Andi was sitting on the set jim acosta was on the front lawn and i swear donald trump will come out of the white house and tell jim to get off of his lawn. Journalists are still in the west wing and in the briefing room, these are happening on live television, they may not be as long as you like. Presence, aonstant lot has changed. Fear thatme of the First Amendment scholars are not come to pass you. It is possible that we could see curtailing of press freedom but we are not there. But it is important to think about the power of the press and the extent to which there is this adversarial relationship and it is happening between the white house and the news media.
