I have heard from the democratic side that trump, or former mr. Trump our former mr. Trump, who i am not in favor of, increase the deficit tremendously during his increased the deficit tremendous during his number of years as president. We are leaving this for live coverage of the upcoming coronation of king charles the third hosted by the Washington Post. Live coverage on cspan. I solemnly pledge myself throughout the remaining time, to uphold the constitutional principles on behalf of our nature nation. I think it will be a very good transpersonal transitional person moment. I think you need that sort of bridge between the two errors. Charles is an accomplished statesman and has particular passion for organic and farming. He cares about Climate Change. I have been with the rest of the world. He has married camilla, who was a pariah for so long but now the queen, has announced that camilla will be queen with her blessing. It took that controversy off the table so i think you will have a decent run, as long as he does not live to 102. So many questions, so little time. That was tina brown talking last year to Washington Post live. It is great to be here with the author of the palace papers who knows everything about the coronation. My first question is you, is making is Meghan Markle going. . She is not an for all the conversations that led up to the composition, though she was ever going to come i do not think she was ever going to come. That day is the fourth birthday of archie, their child. It is a perfect thing. Jerry can go to the coronation and she can say and celebrate her sons fourth birthday. It was elegant the coronation wasnt planning on purpose of archies birthday . Certainly not. It was fortuitous for all concerned. Lets talk about harry and meghan. He is still a prince. He will be going that back. There was a moment where he talks about his father saying to them, he has thrown so many fires into the machinery of the royal family, how will he be received when he goes back by his family and his the public . It has been an agonizing thing because charles adores her. He was always his favorite son and much closer to harry that he was with william. This has been painful for him. He found a shattering experience. He wanted him there. I think that harry has some regretsregrets about the amountn this has caused. There was a moment during the preparations, shortly after the Queens Jubilee where he tried to not write the book. He wanted to stop. But it was too much commitment, too much publishing, problem line bottom line of massive amounts of money her been paid so he would have had to pay back not just the events but dividends on it. So we went forward and the book got massive editing before it,. For harry not to have been there would have been a final wondering. And he needs the branding himself. As the celebrity, fades as it always does, though he is massively unpopular compared to what used to be, i think he will get a cheer. He was not booed when he went last time and i think the public will just not be thrilled, but i dont think hes going to be booed. He was booed by some but i dont think it is going to be one of those great repudiations. How do you think he will navigate william . Will they be standing next to each other . He accuses william a very many things, not just the typical fight over megan. How are they going to navigate that . The relationship is out rock bottom. There is no communication whatever between them. It has been exacerbated recently because harry revealed in Legal Proceedings going on with the old phone hacking that he launched against the tabloids, it came out just recently that william had settled, made a settlement with the tabloid and was paid a large amount and there had probably been a secret agreement between the palace and the papers that excluded harry. So that did not please william. That was supposed to be constant confidential. I think they will sit a long way from each other. But in a decorous fashion. Harry will probably be seated with Prince Andrews girls who he is good friends with but he will not be upfront. King charles, youve got his son on the one hand and then his brother, Prince Andrew with all of the trouble, not least with the bbc interview but his association with jeffrey epstein. What are they going to do with Prince Andrew . The big problem with Prince Andrew is how do you stash away this man . The only person who wants to talk to Prince Andrew at the moment is his horse. That is why he goes right and all the time. Charles recently told him he has to leave the house on Windsor Estate and move to the former abode of meghan and harry. An endless real estate round going on with people being ejected and stuffed into various parts of the estate. And andrew is fighting it. This is his house. It belonged to the queen mother and she bequeathed it to andrew. And he believes it is his house now. He hopes to stay there for the rest of his life that charles has said no, youve got to downsize and move. So things are pretty tricky with andrew. He thinks he can come back, pines to come back, but he has not gotten the memo that nobody wants to see him. Frankly i think you should have gone off to one of the border countries scotland, in days past he would have probably been banished into some castle. But you cant do that anymore. Andrew remains a big problem for charles. One of the people who must be watching this coronation, the transformation is Kate Middletons mother. What is kates role during the coronation and if you were watching her mother, what would you think she would be thinking . She will be flawlessly elegant, untouchable gorgeous, she will play the perfect role. But im sure that misses middleton, misses bennett of the Middleton Family it will be thinking there one step closer, monster closer. One step closer. The next coronation will be william and her daughter, queen kate. I think she will be thinking one step closer as i said. One thing i was going to be thinking about is little george. He will be sitting there, eight or nine whatever he is now, and i wonder, will he be thinking this is going to be me . Is it a frightening thought to think that this will be him after his dad . It is daunting for a modern child, to even contemplate such an idea that this is going to be your destiny. Probably just as alarming for william, who will take the throne after charles dies. William will be the only person to kneel before his father and kissed him upon his cheek. I think he has a lot of misgivings. We dont hear about those. We have heard about harrys misgivings. But what harry never narrates is how hard it is for william. He behaves as if everything was great for william. But i dont think everything is all great for william. He is in a cage for the rest of his life. This brings him one step closer and not too far away. And his mother was 96 and perhaps it was not such a great thing in the end. It would be a sobering thing. King charles has got to navigate his son and his brother, his other son william. Is it right that we are going to be referring to her as Queen Camilla . We are all way already calling her Queen Committee Queen Camilla. Queen consort has been dropped and it is made known she is going to be crowned with the crown of the greatgrandmother of charles who was married to george the fifth. With the moment when she is crowned, there will be a collective intake of breath. What we are seeing in the polls is the british people are fine with camilla being charles his wife and queen, when you say should she be crowned, it dies people dont want to see it. Is it a bridge too far . But the other argument is, she is his wife and she should have it. What does that say about second wives if they dont get equal station . I think all second wives should be called queen. So there is that argument. What will charles and camilla, as far as you know, what will they be thinking when they get that . Obviously there has been a huge amount of rehearsal. Do you think there are actions, will they be nervous or have a shot of something before they go out on the road . In the extraordinary coaches they will ride to Westminster Abbey . Im thinking of the moment when the archbishop of canterbury will announce king charles in Westminster Abbey and the congregation all shout long. Do you think he is going to be excited or embarrassed by this . I think for charles this is the greatest moment of his life, the culmination of everything. It is what he is been put on this earth to do and what hes been waiting and preparing all this time for. I think he takes it as a sacred moment in his life. He is quite religious. He is deeply spiritual at any rate. And certainly he views it as a spiritual occasion, the anointing will be out of and for charles i think it will be a sacred moment. Can you just tell us about the anointing . We have not had the coronation in 70 years. What is the anointing . It is when the archbishop takes the anointing oil and dobbs the king on his head and chest, he is wearing not regal robe split like a shift that they put on him. It is out of sight. Its it sounds like a wonderful Carl Lagerfeld that we all want. Rush out and get your super tunica. I want to get this straight. He goes into some sort of private room. Yes, a canopy obscured from the cameras. He gets undressed, there is the sacred oil and he is redressed. Then he is put into the estate robes, the robes of the king. Beautiful mind robes of the king and he comes out and at that moment he is king. So that is a big deal for charles. I think he is going to be very focused and calm. I think camilla this is such a Wild Development that she is going to be now queen. And even though she has been prepared for it for the last certainly the last year, 10 months or whatever since the queen died, and she knew it would happen now that she has been married to the prince of wales, but the full velocity of this massive responsibility and huge worldwide offense, this is not someone who was raised for that. Charles has been on the public stage forever, since he was in a stroller. He has been making speeches and he has been all over the world. Camilla was a country wife living married to an army officer. She was the out of sight girlfriend. She never expected to be in this position and i think it has been very nerveracking for her in every conceivable way. She would make the extraordinary study and how she went from being possibly the most loathed woman in britain, as one has to remember that of course Princess Diana was alive, the juxtaposition between poor diana who the public felt very synthetic to being the recipient of charles attentions and then ascending the throne. An extraordinary journey in terms of public relations. Unbelievable. It has been a very careful reemergence for her. She is having these setbacks. She was the other woman all the way through the diana case and people always called her an old trout, an old bag, every conceivable there was even a dish in a restaurant she signed her love letters to charles your devoted old bag camilla. She had all that and then she gets to her 50th birthday, they are divorced, charles and diana finally, and the goal is to bring her out because they are divorced. The blazing 50th birthday party, the moment that charles hosts the party for her and the moment of her coming out and what happened a few months later, diana dies. At which point camilla again is back into the role of the people temptress, the shadows. She has to go into hiding for a year or two. The sanctification of diana was at a massive point. She was the most adored woman in the world. She literally went back into hiding. But gradually she comes out of hiding and charles has his secretary whose role was operation get camilla back into the get her out of the shadows, move her into a place where charles could marry her. The queen did not want that to happen. The queen was so against camilla, she would not allow camilla to come to his 50th birthday party. She was sitting at home washing her hair while her entire social group of posh friends and landowners were dancing the night away at windsor castle. That was a better thing. Weve gone from that to her being Queen Camilla and being anointed. Its it is extraordinary what she has pulled off. So she gets anointed to and as you said, crowned too. She gets crowned with queen marys crown. That will be a very big moment. She is going to be attended by her grandchildren. Her entire family will be there. And camilla never stopped being very close to her exhusband, Andrew Parker bowles. He will be in the abbey, smiling with pride like the queen mother. Its not something people always feel about their ex. This must be the most extraordinary guest list to put together. Who has not made the cut . Let me ask the other way. Who has made the cut . What was the criteria for people being invited, and who has not made the cut . The guest list has slimmed down from Queen Elizabeths days. 6000 people were in the congregation for Queen Elizabeth and they had to build scaffolding to keep the men. It was reduced to 2000 which is not that many when you consider the kind of people who have to be invited. There was also a desire, promoted by charles, that this is going to be a more inclusive coronation. You will see many more people of color in this crowd than you ever would have found at the first coronation before. The idea was to make it more inclusive so the peers of the realm who normally would have been invited to all of the major nubile names appeared at the last coronation dressed in their noble robes, they will then be rushed out of the situation except for a handful to their chagrin and will be replaced by people from the National Health service and the charities, all the charities charles hosts. It will be a big component of those kind of people. The mps have been cut down to 40. Theyve been told they cant bring their wives and there was gnashing of teeth about that and complaining. It has been greatly reduced and every so often, they have so much fun running every few days some sort of crusty duke in the country saying he has no concerns about the fact that he was not invited. Many noses are out all over the place. She never makes the cut but sometimes she has been, she said she will be staying at home and eating a coronation chicken sandwich. Various friends who were up very late, people like stephen fry who is one of charles is good friends, he only recently got his invitation but they are beginning to dribble out now. It is been very parsimonious. I was going to ask if we expect a celebrity contingent. Will the beckhams be there, is oprah going . Does it have the same appeal as a Royal Wedding . No. That is not charles gang anyway and there is no desire to address the set with celebrities who just happened to be the people we all want to say. That will not be the case. Some prime minister, Emmanuel Macron is going, biden is not going. But american president s have never been to the coronation. Eisenhower did not go to elizabeths. Jill biden will be going and taking her granddaughter which has caused a certain amount of nobody expected her to show up with a plus one so that was a moment of freeze on moment of frisson. Well surely they did not want her to be on her own. This is a ruthless cut, people are not getting any plus ones. Is there food obviously not within Westminster Abbey itself, but are there side parties like the white house Correspondents Dinner . There is a lot of Village Party and on. That chic thing to do is to go to your Country House in the village and take part in the big village activity wherever that is. The coronation dish is coronation quiche which has got bad reviews, people saying it is a terrible idea. There are massive amounts of quiches being baked. We are reading pieces that are saying nobody is enthusiastic but that will not be true on the day. That is what they always say before any of these events and then in about 24 hours before everybody goes completely bonkers and becomes a patriot and a monarchist and starts i think it is going to be a big fiesta actually. What grade would you give king charles in this sort of internship he has had . Admittedly, he has had one his entire life. But in the six months since his mother died to now, there were awkward moments at the beginning of his monarchy with the pen incident where he gets very flustered over a pen leaking. I hate these stinking things. That was not good. You got quite an insight into the fact that he probably loses his temper quite a lot and camilla looked quite resigned to it. Has he been doing ok so far . Apart from the pen slap which got more ticktock views and the queens death, he has been flawless. The publication of spare was his first massive issue. And he sailed through it. Absolutely brilliantly. Everybody was running around, and out they went, sustaining force, being immaculate and going to their charities. They simply said nothing and that got him a lot of points. In a way, inadvertently i think harry enabled charles to give him some points which was not the intention. He is also being debonair and appropriate at every moment. It started with the moment to queen the queen died when he came out with a marvelous speech, he had humanity, humility, dignity and he saw the preparation there. It was a wonderful display of kingly conduct. Everything he has done since has been incredible. He wanted to go to the meeting last year, the Climate Change meeting and he was told by the now you see him now you dont pry start liz truss that he shouldnt go. And it was much more interesting to be at that then cop itself. He has shown he is going to be a great convene or periods and of course his french tour was canceled by the protests. Connection. What happened . The palace, he definitely lost our connection for the time being. Hopefully we will get it back soon, or talking about coronation and any questions you may have, tina you are back. We just lost you for 10 seconds. That is a relief. We are talking about you lost us you are talking at how king charles is actually been good so far. He is a great convene her and that he is convening the weekend before possibly . He went to germany, he could not go to france because of the protests in france. He went to germany and it was considered a huge success because it was supposed to be a lot of the post brexit healing of using charles a central late to start healing the wounds of brexit. He got usually good marks off of that trip because charles is a statement, he knows all of these prime ministers and he speaks german and french. Meeting these World Leaders ever since he was 20. He is very good at it. He is now really the countrys most seasoned diplomat. At a point, it is a big effort to have charles out there as far as foreign offices are concerned. Nonetheless, pointing to the fact that younger people in particular are not reflected in the coronation and the day before people suddenly got interested and it was enormous and that the and there was a swarm of empathy for the queens funeral. Liz truss have seen three prime ministers in six months. The strikes in britain across various areas striking. Is does it feel out of keeping what is the times . One of the few things best seems to be working properly is the monarchy and the transition to the reigns. I predicted when the queen died you would have an extraordinarily destabilized moment as regards to the monarchy. Charles has been so surefooted, all of the volatility and chaos and all of his issues have been directed at the Political Class so that it reminds people to have a head of state who is not partisan who is not one side of the other or the other. He can unite people without politics being involved. I think very useful in this moment in national life. Certainly true for the Younger Generation who are less interested in monarchy. They are not hostile to it particularly. There is not a great the irony is that a lot of people are bought by him do not think he should be camilla be queen. Monarchy is in good standing. Perhaps it does not matter frankly that the Younger Generation are not and that engaged are not that engaged. Deanna was the rock star who ruled the young into the monarchy, who made everybody excited and engaged with what was happening in the monarchy. I do not think young people were interested in the boring old trout faced queen mary or george the sixth or the queen, everybody was patriotic. I do not think young people were hanging on the words of them particularly. Young people are not that interested in monarchy and never have been unless it happens to be as exciting as Princess Diana. Is dianas ghost going to be hanging over the coronation . She said in her interview that she did not believe charles would ever get what she called the top job. Here he is or when he is in the top job, what fuels her friends, will any of our friends or family be there . While her brother who spoke so eloquently at her memorial be there . Charles is not going and he made a comment about he would not be there but he has some coronation information knocking about in an attic. I think there are several points about it, i cannot underestimate , i am sure that william will be thinking about his mother. I think it is worth thinking about the kind of amazing excitement it would be if diana was being crowned on may 10 or may 6. It is if that woman was about to have a crown on her head the magic is something you could hardly imagine what it would be. I think there is a sort of poignant about, a ruefulness, when she died at 36, she would have been really good at this. It is very sad, they did not we have the prospect of queen kate. That i think is going to be another very exciting moment for the monarchy. They have that to look forward to and at that point young people will become more engaged when Queen Catherine is on the throne. For all of the trials and tribulations with harry and megan and willie and kate they are relevant, they have managed to create a new so oprah soap opera on social media, even though it is not willie and kate. You feel that they have kept it going in a way that may not have been possible had it not been for megan creating the drama around the young court. I do feel when i think charles sees william does not by Charles Beals i think what a great loss harry and megan are. Now that the lineup has been so slimmed down on their own behest, he said i want to make a slimmed down a line, i want to get rid of all of the extended family on the balconies going to be the immediate family come to me harry will be in that and there will be a harry and megans shaped hole on the balcony. I think it would be a big loss because i think the monarchy did need those two. For the commonwealth, for the diversity, for harrys star power which is frankly undeniable in whatever one thinks about like him or not, he has tremendous magnetism and with noticeable confusion with the queens funeral, you felt the magnitude, the magnetism of harry. And of course they are a loss to the monarchy and the question of course, the big question is is there ever going to be somehow a reunite is going to be a reuniting . Something about harry that something that people saw, a heartwarming moment for a lot of families across the country because it is such a relatable, parents falling out with kids, kids going out with espouses the do not fit with the bigger family. Megan is supposed to have written a letter to charles pointing out the boards in the royal familys attitude to her. Is king charles likely to come to america and do a visit . Is it possible they may be here . Unfortunately every time it looks like things will get better something happens and they get bad again. I think charles and harry are on speaking terms and there will be imperfections that can be built on, it is tough to see how that can happen with williams because he has a very bitter and angry. He is feeling the whole situation. The tragedy of it is you thought at the queens funeral when they cannot together, it was an entirely stagemanaged event, kate has said it was the hardest thing she has ever made herself do, the public loved it so much. They lovedeeg those brothers together. He loved seeing those four people out there for them. That is a great loss. I am not terribly hopeful, in the case of george the sixth, his head with the eight who advocated and there are many parallels to harry and megan their relationship never improved. Worth the sixth and edward were so close, so close in the same vein, as the bitterness again about the way that wallace was received, it is so parallel and all of it happened because the gap between them got bigger and the animosity got worse, i am not sure or hopeful. I am sorry. What about the empire . Canada, australia, when the queen died it was possible these countries may choose to end their relationship with the commonwealth. Lose their particular oversight the royal family has. Is that has that faded a bit . Charles is relaxed about the fact he understands that the 14 sovereign realms of the commonwealth of which he is still the titular head willie go. It is only a matter of time, for it happening in a lettuce boot him out way i think it is happening because it will happen eventually, by the time william takes over. Right now, these commonwealth countries are not wanting to particularly extend the capital or time or referendum for their constitution unless there was a big movement inside of their country. We saw in barbados there was a desire or that. And it happened. Any country, he has made it clear, any country that wants do not be there will not be there. It is the it is a much less inflamed issue than it was. Is the politically correct . If politically correcting is he politically correcting . Yes. In a way, in terms of his class very much so. That is what is so ironic, he could be seen as such an old bogey. , the only one in a coat in he is the only one in a coat and tie, despite the unconventional figure. He is quite the unconventional figure. He believes in a tremendous amount in medicine and herbal remedies, all of this stuff about charles he is quite a hippie child. It is part of the interesting sort of paradoxes of his personality. In his class he is one of at the same time he is one of the most queer men you can possibly imagine. He is a funny combination, actually. Testing ahead 20 years time, assume he stays in good health and he is deciding to pass the throne onto william in 20 years, what state will we find the monarchy in . It will be less global, or cap the queens endless commitments, year upon year of those big royalty wars, that is definitely going to get reduced and reduced, we saw the last was a complete fiasco with when william and kate went to barbados and they just were they had the chainlink fence. Kate in a huge white hat standing at the back of a car that the queen had once ridden on, it was wrong in terms of contemporary imagery in much more diverse world. The world wars will become about business benefits and that will reduce their footprint you will see in 20 years time a much more reduced global footprint, much more like the european monarchs. Can anybody even called out the names or the state of the king of sweden or belgium . These other European Countries they have very little sort of they do not punch above their weight at all while the british monarchy has punched above its white. I think that will change and i would not be surprised by the time william gets in, i wonder if there will even be a coronation because the only country that has a coronation, we are the last ones left. I cannot imagine william who was not interested in any of that i can imagine him saying why are we doing a coronation . It will not happen again. We have seen the last coronation. I know you are covering the events, cbs on saturday, people should tune in because this very well may be the last coronation we ever get to see. Yes. And may well be. Ill not be surprised if it is the last one. I cannot i cannot wait to hear your commentary on the fact that they are glued to my television. 5 00 a. M. very early.
