And, i live here in bedford New Hampshire. I am glad to be here. Or wanted to kick off with a question about how youre doing and how your campaign is doing. And how you are doing as a candidate. That we arehings observing in the political race is observing the process. Candidates keep yourself fresh. What is your process . Your travel schedule going to and from. You are flying into and out of New Hampshire. What is that like . How you keep yourself moving . Gov. Jeb it is not much different than in terms of energy expended. Was 21. Rried when i i started working when i was 21. Ive never taken more than one week off. That sounds weird to say. It is part of who i am. Whether it is being governor, i just finished writing a book called reply all. It was one of my emails during my time. I had a couple of million emails. The emails are responded to her usually 300,000. Ive lived a life. This is a different in that regard. The difference is that i am away a lot. I miss my wife. I bought a really cool bed. The road things like that i take for granted. I have a great bed. It is a very expensive bed. It is built very well. Host there is nothing like your own bed. Gov. Jeb those of the simple things you your four. I wake up excited about the journey i am on. I did my pushups, i cannot do that many pushups. I did situps. I stay in good shape physically. I try to read. That is hard to do. I try to stay current. Im curious to actually. I like my curiosity to be fed. I do not push aside information. I like information. One of the powers that anybody can use is not really related to being a candidate. I learned the power to convene. You askre honored that for their advice. You should try. From somebodye who might be a leader in New Hampshire that you think has an interesting point. Call and ask their advice on something. There is a good chance they will take you up on it. I find that to be very fulfilling. That is great. Weot of things you mentioned want to ask. A little bit more personally. I want to mention that we have some people with microphones. Jeb this reminded me of an event in the governors mansion. The secretary decided which ill take this test. There were 50 of us taking it together. She was the moderator. I am an introvert. I forgot the other parts. The two groups between extroverts and introverts. There were 40 extroverts in one room. We were supposed to plan the party. Adjusted the introverts . We quickly decided that we are all going to read a book that week. Have an would interesting dinner conversation that would be over early. The extroverts did not plan their party. They just started the party. They got a conga line together and came in to mock us. I have to be careful about it. Ill probably try to learn from the most talented Young Professionals rather than just tell them what im thinking. I found that to be a good leader you need to listen and learn. I would try to combine the knowledge and experience of younger professionals so it might actually need to be something that would be serious. I apologize. Gov. Jeb i might give these next. Let me follow up. If you were to buy certain people, i give you three can invite. To have to be historical figures. They cannot be past president s. That is banned. Give us to historical figures and one current celebrity that you would want to invite. And why. Gov. Jeb i would not invite donald trump. Winston churchill is probably because ofost admire the range of his experience and knowledge. And his Life Experiences extraordinary. He wrote prolifically. He was a wartime leader. Just by the sheer determination and his leadership, he saved the country. He fought in wars. He reported on wars. Parties. D he defied conventional wisdom of his time. , weing and listening to him might need a brandy and a cigar. That would be well worth it. I wouldve loved to meet and have a conversation with neil armstrong. I think the Discovery Space is something that is deeply underestimated in terms of how uniquely an American Experience that is and how phenomenal it is for us to maintain our space programs. To talk to somebody who was the first walk on the moon. That will be very cool. In terms of president ial leaders, there are a lot we can learn from. The greatest president in my mind was Abraham Lincoln. Im related to franklin pierce, but he would not be on my list. Side of my mothers being a relative. I think Abraham Lincoln would be a phenomenal person to learn from. , i do nott celebrity really believe in celebrity. I find it very superficial. There are not many actors i know. I got a big fight with matt damon about school choice. It seems her school superficial. I rather be with people who have actually done things. Out that you majored in latin american studies when youre in college. I did my study abroad in mexico. I was at George Washington university. Gov. Jeb did you have a boyfriend or girlfriend from mexico like i did yucca did . Host no i did not. Gov. Jeb i had a latin american affair before i majored in what american studies. Host i was curious about how that experience shaped you. Gov. Jeb i want to andover down the road. We had a trimester system. For one trimester i want to mexico with eight or nine of my colleagues. We build a schoolhouse and a rule area. I met my wife at the end of that time. I spoke spanish ok. People who said their fluid sometime or not. Fluent but i was not. I fell in love with her. I was 17 at the time. Everything in my life can be defined by that. School in two years. I took semester off. She got me going. I wanted to marry her on the spot. However that was not possible. My interest in latin america was principally driven by her. So, it is kind of a backdoor way to the degree, we lived in venezuela. Miami, which has one foot firmly planted in our country and one in latin america. I love the region. I think it is important for us politically and diplomatically to be tied to the region. My Life Experiences have helped me along the way. If it was not for meeting her i would not have been a major. I would not have got to venezuela. Life happens that way. You cannot planet. I think he will your its spent too much time try to plan it out. You need some spontaneity. It is a lot more fun. Where on that topic i have heard that informed your views on immigration. Can you talk about how that has informed your views. I think the question a lot of us are wondering, given how this is such a hotly debated issue is how do we address this issue. On the broad question of immigration, what makes us extraordinary and an exceptional country is that our shared values defined our national identity. We the only country that has that at its core. In most countries it is either race that defines it, the japanese are japanese. , it is veryup restrictive. It is based on race. The have a credible culture, but it is a different kind of citizenship than what we have. Our strength has been historically and we embrace a set of values and it does not matter what we look like or what you have in your name, ray come from. We are losing that. So, the immigrant experience as part of our heritage and it has been a big reason why we are the most creative and innovative country and the world. We lose it when we do not control the border. Havese it because we now political leaders that like to divide us of the two spare parts. Is there a set of common values that define our citizenship . Which have a much stronger belief in our heritage and our past. You guys see the tv shows or they stick a microphone to somebody in new york and they ask how ms. Supreme Court Justices are there, or how many branches of government exist. It is disturbing, to say the least. , it going back to the basics think would make immigration a catalyst for a lot of good things. If we do not have a set of shared values, if we do not have a, identity about our heritage, that people cannot buy into, it is a problem. Right now it is being preyed upon. What role do think the next president will play in dealing with that. Gov. Jeb we need to fix the thing. You can say that line for about everything. Regulations, health care. We have to start fixing things. The immigration system is broken. The legal system is broken. Think about it. Petition beingy the driver of 90 of all legal immigrants. So, spouse and minor children which you would say is the definition of family rights. That, every country has. We have adult parents on top of that, chain migration is taken effect. Ofcrowd out all other forms immigration. We need to fix that. We need to fix the border. Dealing with the fact that people extend stay on the have a legal visa. We have to deal with terrorism. We have the Visa Waiver Program for european countries. Some Asian Countries allow entry to the country. Now, we have citizens in europe that are pledging their allegiance to islamic terrorists. We should not make it easy for them to come in. We need to adjust our laws going forward. To protect our Legal Immigration system would have to make sure that coming here legally is a lot easier than coming here illegally. That is what has been missing in the past few years. We need to restore that. How to fix that . You roll up your sleeves and get a benchmark. You say here are our objectives. Heres the strategy. You make sure you can feed you make sure people are on target. There is money to build places were a wall is appropriate. There is funding for border security. We just need to get them on the border. There is funding for the gps technology. In the Drone Technology that could help us. Congress has funded the exit and entry biometrics to make it easy to track where people are and overstay their visas. Itneed leadership to monitor and make sure that we are applying all the tools at our disposal to make it happen. We could back out of policy and get more personal. Gov. Im curious what you read when you were a teenager and in college. Would you consider any books you read informative. . Gov. Jeb the books that had the biggest impact on me or the books my spanish Teacher Required me to read, because not only with a great works i had to , theservantes extraordinary writers. I do nothing i could do it. The fact that i could read it was amazing. Im more capable. Pushed for the school. It was like a giant root canal. Also, i figured out how to do things. Or aer it was reading savant does book that like 600 pages. It, i thoughtd maybe i could do calculus. Experience has had a Lasting Impact on me. I think everything we do we should raise expectations for ourselves and others, rather than lower expectations to excuse a weight why people are not achieving what they can achieve. The books i read now are all of the map. I read mostly to learn. To that surprise you . There were things i didnt know. He. Jeb he had a diary, and was very disciplined about writing in it. He had doubts about himself. Doubts about where he was in life. Things i never saw. I always saw him totally in charge. Was interesting insight that he is a human being. Upset when he lost. Happy when he won. It was very strange, but when you are a son of somebody, you do not always get that insight. And how he learned from his previous jobs that put him in a good setting for president. Think about your dad both professionally and personally gov. Jeb apparently i did not. What do you want to emulate most . , what would you want to do differently . Nine gov. Jeb i was in my mid20s with two children. I was working. To come if you have a Good Relationship with the family coming you try to beat them in your dad was. That expression happens to a lot of us. Our member that if i tried to achieve what i thought my dad was that i would get maybe 50 of the way there. I could either except that as a dramatic experience and get therapy and live a miserable e, or i could expect except being half the man my dad was. And still live a life of purpose and meaning. I think of himh i think he is the greatest male line. It is hard to emulate him, because i think he is near perfect. If you do not know him come i am just telling you. He is decent, if i could be better in my life could be to generous andd and decent to people. Not just the big people, but everybody. That is my dad. He treats the person that is serving in a hotel the same way he treats the head of state. Just to be grounded that way, Everything Else flows from there. Notfor that strength is defined by the volume of your voice or the outrageous things you say. It is the fortitude and integrity that you show when people are not watching. Do we have questions . A question of federal contractors. If youre a federal contractor, you can lobby the government with lovie your paid by the government to do that job to get more money. Im wondering if you would support a requirement that federal contractors this blows disclose political spending. Gov. Jeb i think we should have total transparency about lobbying. Whether it is the top staff or an elected official. The money used to lobby. Providey used to support for campaign. It should be transparent. Another question. Hello. Ant to ask your device advice. I have seen a few times. What is interesting is that youre very personable. You know a lot of the issues. My question is how are you going to use your personality and charm to get through the topics where you are not agent into a gas and oil issue on why the economy is or is not doing well. I think your points are valid, but the concern is the topic. How do you overcome that . Gov. Jeb the gas sector is a Great Success story of our time. We need to make sure that we do it at a fast rate, rather than suppress the things that are to our advantage. Information technology is one of those. We lead the world in innovation in those two sectors. We lead the world and drug discovery, but we make it harder with the fda to increase the costs of getting a drug to market. Basic uncertainty across the spectrum of economic activity. I did not feel the room go away from me when i talked about the Energy Revolution in our midst. I also think that the next Disruptive Technologies are in some of his garage, not inside the department of energy. The world is going to be dramatically different five years from now or 10 years from now. It could be that someone will figure out how to store nuclear waste, and be able to build a plant in a timeframe and cost that allows it to be the best renewable source of energy in the world over the longest amount of time. Im not smart enough to know what the world holds. Theink you need to create freest environment where, whatever that is happens at the fastest pace. What we create by getting government more involved slows things down rather than excel or its them. Wordseciate the good about my efforts. Heres is what i love about New Hampshire. It is a place we can complete a sentence and ask somebody what you think . They will tell you. It is generally really interesting. In the wayng lost that some people campaign. Something you said earlier about the government slowing things down. We work with federal funds. Not only does it make projects more expensive, but it slows them down. You have any solution for that . Absolutely. The timing of this is perfect, because i think at noon when failed a state federal initiative that the attorney headed upt up with people outside of washington that creates this blueprint about how to shift power away from washington. Money from washington to states. You get your money through the state. There are very few roles in the state, but is mostly bulletproof. We invest in that money all sorts of rules that make the entire point obsolete. Whether it is Department Transportation money, or costs if you do not have the saveal rules, you could 30 . You could probably accelerate the time i 30 , if not more. , to get infrastructure a permit or of a group of permits can take 10 years rather than two years. We cannot build a highway system anymore. Across the board, i think the answer wherever possible is to assume that states and local governments actually care about the constituents and their mission. Maybe more than the federal government. Table in washington think theyll have a race to the bottom. The minute you free money and do not create a bunch of rules, and just give the money to the state and allow them to decide what to do with it, somehow the states do not have the interest of their constituents. Be if ithat it could is a fixed amount. Thisis the mission of stable initiative. Both the terms of rulemaking and spending. We will propose what we have proposed. Ramps forlock medicaid. Block ramps for the money which is what you are getting. Block ramps for Department Transportation money. For the fixed cost federal government in terms of money coming down. The limited the rules. You could do what everybody will have the chance to do which is to answer the following questions. How was could we do it . That is where the fun of life comes. If you have the ability to ask answer questions, and you have the ability to start a new, think of how much innovation could take place. What we need to do. Government in washington operates as though it is 1975. The time we have left, i know we want to go to a few more issues. I just want to ask one more. Issue with recent events, National Security and Foreign Policy have taken center stage. You view as isis being the most central threat. Multiple layers to this that we need to consider. Gov. Jeb there are clearly more layers. We of the threat of nuclear proliferation. We do not talk about north korea. People joke because the guy wears funny they are actually testing their capabilities. Whether they have the capability today to strike the west coast or not is a question, but they might. That is a serious question. , if there isility a regime change, if they lose their stability it could be a challenge. The saudis and the persian gulf countries viewing and ran as a threat and trying to build the same capabilities that karen is on the threshold of having. Isis and radical islamic terrorism has now emerged as the most immediate threat. All of these require leadership. I think the lessons of history show that we cannot be the worlds policeman. We cannot say that we will just go solve this. We have to do this by leading. No bs can lead. No has the capabilities of the United States. If we do not accept that opportunity,y, and we will have a void that is created. The void is a caliphate the size of indiana with 30,000 Battle Tested islamic terrorists that are organized to destroy our freedom. They see freedom as weakness. They will attack it. You will need to have a strong Republican Base behind you to be able to appeal to the independents and democrats. In order to get the Republican Base, you have to be able to identify with the republican voters. I have been a republican myself. That thetle concerned Republican Party has been moving away from young voters. Rather than to bring them into default. The republicannk party is doing well to attract young voters. Such as myself. What do we need to do better . Gov. Jeb the Republican Party is doing better at embracing Communication Technologies that are so important for millennials and young people. We are catching up. That is good. Better our message is when we are hopeful and optimistic the future. Not about how bad things are today, but how they can be made better. We are on the verge of the greatest time to be alive. We have these barriers that if we break through we will see it. Or more people see it. I think in people can play a constructive role in that. I think we also have to recognize that the elephant in the room as it relates to young people is the fact that we are fixed entitlement problems in our country. I find it remarkable that there is not enough anger amongst your generation. If we do nothing, you are not going to get anything. The power of compounding overwhelms how we fund anything. Well not built to block the grant. Discretionary spending, our military will be getting. Expansion medicare, medicaid obamacare, and social security, which is not an entitlement, but eight retirement system. Those liabilities are in the trillions of dollars. If we do not start fixing that now, itll be harder and harder to do it. That, to me is the one way we should be able to connect and say look. Well give you an opportunity by fixing the past. I do not enough that will resonate with young people. It should go. Without fixing that, youre left with a bill that will not be able to be paid. So, we are all in. 300 Different College campus organizations. Which my sonsort are heading up. We are making steady progress across the board. I think on the issue side we need to focus on the economy and fixing the part of the government that is broken. Unfortunately, we are running out of time. Todays thing was life of the party.
