Monumental bill for our veterans. This legislation spearheaded in the house. In keeping with our purpose and our oath to protect and defend and again to honor our veterans for their service. As we have said, in battlefield we leave no soldier behind and when they come home we leave no veteran behind. Protect and defend is what we are all about. Defend, thats the justification. We expand that to Economic Issues as well as government issues. Security, economy, governance. To that end, we followed the lead of our president who made clear that one of his priorities was a strong asianpacific initiative to increase our cooperations in those fields. Security, economy, and governance. There was a trip which i am proud to have traveled. We were six cochairs and we all brought so much to it. But again, feels almost emotional what happened at the white house today. This week has been about the pit chips bill, the National Security bill that was signed yesterday. The tax bill today. Again yesterday afternoon the president signing the authorization for our support of sweden and finland coming into nato and on friday when we passed the ira Inflation Reduction Act. Recognizing a Strong Economy essential to a Strong Defense of our country. So, again, we went to singapore, malaysia, taiwan, south korea, republic of korea and to japan. All of the countries, we met with the leadership of the countries. To show that we see the role of congress in strengthening the discussion. We went with humility, we went with respect to listen, to learn. About what the president was proposing and sharing with candor and respect how we saw things. It was very constructive that way. We also had the privilege of it is selfexplanatory. We also paid respects to some of the cultural aspects of their country that they were so proud of. We will go into that. Again, six cochairs, the culture of Foreign Affairs committee. Susan delve any the vice chair of ways and means committee. A member of the Intelligence Committee and andy kemp who cannot be with us. He has two little boys and he is a former diplomat working in the state department under president obama and a member of the Foreign Affairs as well as the Armed Services committee. He served as our diplomat on the trip. We miss him here but he is available to answer questions you may have. The beautiful diversity of our trip, imagine this, the beautiful diversity which is itself evident. Andy kemps parents born in korea. Respect, culture, country and different views so imminent for all of us on the community. But some of it directly connected in that way. The purpose, as i say, was to talk about the sense of economy and governance and the members will talk about some of that. But we think them thank them for their response to can dem russia for their invasion of ukraine. We thank them for their leadership and Standing Firm as i call it from participating in some of their meetings and reaction to their execution for their leaders there. It was remarkable to see. Of course we talked about in terms of governance we talked about covid, we talked about Climate Change and the rest. Though we had specific issues that related to their countries that we can talk about if you wish. In terms of taiwan, our purpose in going to taiwan was to say that we had a strong relationship built on status quo which we support. Which is really important because they are saying well no the taiwan act of 1979 at the same time our change of recognition established the terms of our relationship. And the six assurances. There is no departure from that. In keeping with that, we will not allow china to isolate taiwan. They have kept taiwan from participating in the World Health Organization were taiwan can make a valued contribution. They may keep them from going there but they are not keeping us from going to taiwan. We will not allow them to. So we think the reaction, that was our purpose to salute the democracy. We have one of the freest democracies in the world. Show our respect to that for the success of their economy, for the enthusiasm of their young people to embrace democracy and others as well. Knowing nothing else except a free taiwan. So we established our purpose, their pretext was our purpose for the visit. They didnt do it when the senate went under chairman hernandez of the Foreign Relations committee they just decided to do it this time. We are very proud of our delegation. We are proud of our men and women in uniform it when i talk about security, whether it was Travis Air Force base, whether it was hawaii we visit with them and went to the arizona. And then to guam on our way to get their appraisal of the situation in the region and also to pay our respects to our men and women, which we did there. And we did it in the countries we visited, especially in korea and japan. In career we had to go to the dmv to get an uptodate current report the dynamic in korea. I have been, its a horrible place but we were seeing we were at the border how things were going. So the reasons we were very honored to be received. We think thanked our host countries and spent a bit of time with their speakers and we think thank our diplomats who welcomed us. Just close by saying two things when we were in japan we were beautifully welcomed. We went to pay our respects to Prime Minister abe who was a friend of america. This tribute, they invited us to. It was very sad but again a connection between our two countries. In closing, i just want to thank our president. We are very proud of his initiative which was the main purpose of our visit and our timing. With that, i want to yield to our distinguished chair for the Foreign Affairs committee. Praise him for his commitment to our security, our economic success, and his governance in all the countries we are engaged with. Mr. Chairman. Thank you, madam speaker for the opportunity to participate in this very important, very substantial, and very successful it was important for us to be there in the region. The people of the region wanted to cs there. They understand the horror that is taking place in the world as we see from place after place, its a question of democracy. They want to know that we are partners. Thats why they welcomed us at every stop that we went to. They said thank you for being here whether it was taiwan, south korea, japan, singapore, or malaysia. In taiwan we saw people lined up down the streets. Over 250,000 people watching our flight land. The crowds in the streets saying thank you for coming. We had the opportunity to talk and have conversations with various legislators which was very important. We had this candid backandforth about what we are doing and i had the opportunity as chair of the committee to let them know we are doing many things. Particularly when it comes to taiwan, we have bills coming out like the taiwan peace and security and stability act. They were interested to know that. Like the taiwan fellowship act and the reassurance act and provisions supporting the name change to the Representative Office in the United States. Again, it is not us who want to change the status quo. We see that coming from beijing. They were so appreciative that we stood to show we were going to partner with our friends and allies throughout the region. They all have issues whether it is the South China Sea or the Taiwan Strait. But they want to know that we were there. Thats why the conversation that you see with my fellow members and they will talk about what was working with climate or what was historic with chips and changes and dealing with manufacturing goods in the United States. I conclude by saying that, and i thank President Biden for being in the region. He has fitted visited. Our message to the people of Southeast Asia you have a friend and ally and a partner in the United States of america. When you call to ask us to come to visit you, as we did on this trip, we will be there with you. With that, i just turn it over to the chair of the Veterans Affairs committee. Thank you, mr. Chairman. When we first became chairman we were just so thrilled. Good afternoon. I am chair of the Veterans Affairs committee and i was honored to attend this congressional delegation or be a part of the congressional delegation with Speaker Pelosi and our colleagues here today. While we were abroad, there was interest with our Defense Security allies and partners. Some are allies and some are partners. Interestingly enough, we visited robust inspiring democracies. Some of those democracies have a balanced approach with china. They dont want the United States to force them to choose sides. But interestingly enough, even those that dont want to be forced to choose sides are very interested in the United States being there security partner. We help them with military and training. Of course, they were interested in what we do with our veterans. I had a long extensive talk with the defense minister of malaysia on that topic. I had a chance to speak for a second time with the minister for veterans and patriots of south korea. We are interested in moving forward more work on the korean valor act which was included in the recently passed fiscal 23 ndaa. I dont want to get into details yet but it has to do with naturalized korean American Veterans from the vietnam war era and how we can serve them here in the United States. We had a chance to bring up the issue of human rights but also i believe when we visit all democracies, that the health of any democracy is measured by how well it protects its minorities. So we raise the issue of how well are your minorities being treated including lgbtq people . So we raise that in countries where that topic is necessarily one that is very comfortable. But, interestingly enough, i think there was actually a willingness to talk and a willingness to discuss those things. Just last night, as an after effect of this i was on a virtual discussion, a virtual interparliamentary discussion with japanese and korean parliamentarians and leaders of the japanese the impact of this trip was very evident. Huge openness to moving forward the Trilateral Alliance among japan, United States, and korea. So important with regards to the Taiwan Strait issue and having our work countries were closely together. The discussion last night, all of us are calling upon our heads of state to get a summit of the three nations to happen. That is one of the things that i think is the aftereffect of this trip. There is a huge openness, that i see, and while it is not im not talking about taiwan so much but this Trilateral Alliance is so important of our being able to provide a space for taiwan to exist in the status quo. China is challenging the status quo. I want to turn it over to the vice chair of the ways and means committee. Thank you. Vice chair of the great state of washington. The mariners beat the yankees last night. It was really an honor to be part of this journey with Speaker Pelosi and our entire delegation. While the first time i visited i think every country since i have in member of congress, i have visited the region many times in my former career in business and technology and i know firsthand the very Close Partnership that we have peered the Economic Partnership that we have in innovation and the longterm partnerships that have been there that we can build on. In fact, over half of all Global Economic growth is expected in this region over the next 30 years. So it was a primary goal of our to location delegation. Important goal of our delegation was to talk about how we build Stronger Economic ties throughout the region, increasing our presence is key to advancing other goals we have in terms of boosting security and strengthening democracy. We should be strengthening partnerships. I would like with likeminded countries and build on the partnerships we have. I think its important that we are collectively rule makers in the region not role takers. I think this is true when it comes to areas where we dont have Strong International standards such as the rules that govern our Digital Economy or consumer right in the Digital Economy. We discussed the opportunities of the new economic initiatives. Like the u. S. Taiwan initiative for 21st century trade and how to continue to build on those partnerships to address and strengthen supply chains. So our economy, our collective economies are more resilient in the face of pandemic, wars, or other future shocks. We discussed the legislation President Biden signed yesterday. We want to create the resiliency and read that did see that is so important and obviously to make sure we have increased manufacturing capacity right here in the United States. It is critical we talk about semi conductors and everything. Not just things we think of Traditional Technology cell phones, computers, ultrasound equipment, washing machines to trucks and airplanes. It will boost several investments in research and innovation so we can continue to lead the way in years to come. That is an opportunity we can do throughout asia also. Our goal is to Work Together towards a shared prosperity. The speaker walked about shared prosperity a lot on our trip. And how we can use our capabilities to solve new problems, address Climate Change, advanced energy security, bring down inflation and to promote equality. Its a rich conversation, a rich conversation we will continue to have with the administration. I want to now introduce a member of the house Intelligence Committee. A proud representative from chicago i think everyone we met knows that he is from chicago. Let me turn it over to the congressman. As a cubs fan we are not going to talk about baseball today. In any case, thank you so much, Speaker Pelosi, for including me on this particular trip. Thank you to all of you for paying attention to this congressional delegation trip. Our presence in these various countries was welcome because of the United States is ultimately important for the security of the region. Everywhere we went, as others have mentioned, the leaders that we met with all said we want to strengthen our ties from a security standpoint with the United States and we want to make sure that you are present in the Southeast Asian region for a long time to come. So to that end, perhaps some of you noticed our visit to taiwan, we support peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. We also believe nobody three unilateral efforts or use of force should change the status quo. And, especially in light of what has happened in ukraine, we want to make sure the what happened in ukraine does not happen with regards to the Southeast Asian region, specifically taiwan. Unfortunately, the peoples republic of china has engaged in rather provocative measures and live fire exercises which happened long before we went to taiwan and happened after we went to taiwan. If the cost of avoiding these types of provocative measures is to cede control of taiwan to the peoples republic of china or to cede control of our travel schedules and congress to the peoples republic of china, that is not a price we are going to pay. Price we are going to pay. That being said, we seek increased Economic Cooperation in the region as vice chair dell been a mentioned delbene mentioned. Taiwan has pledged to invest 20 billion in manufacturing Semiconductor Chips in the United States. This week on friday we will pass through the house a historic Inflation Reduction Act and the largest investment in fighting Climate Change in our history. We respectfully submit that area of Climate Change could be a fruitful area of collaboration with the peoples republic of china. Ultimately, we believe that these provocative measures taken by the prc were an unfortunate attempt to deflect attention from some real problems that are happening within the prc with regard to their economy and their response to covid19. However, we respectfully submit that these provocative measures are going to continue to harm their economy, not enhance it. Because it will increase uncertainty for commerce in the region. And as taiwans economy and the rest of the region is so intertwined, any further provocative measures will only hurt the chinese economy. That being said, im glad to see that these live fire exercises appear to be easing and these provocative measures appear to be subsiding. We look forward to a time of collaboration as opposed to increased tensions. Thank you. Speaker pelosi thank you very much, my colleagues. Thank you very much, cubs fans, yankees fans. What am i . [laughter] Speaker Pelosi giants and orioles. In any event, baseball is a big sport in japan. It we did spend a good deal of time with members of parliament bragging about their exports to the United States in that regard. And the cultural affects of our visit were very unifying. When we were in korea, they said we understand you like u2 and bonos music. They had these beautiful performers come play songs on the korean instruments. We have pictures. You see them there. Then they ended up with frank sinatra. [laughter] oh, gosh. In singapore, what we saw there was quite remarkable. The big giant tree and all the rest of that. They take great pride in their cultures and we wanted to pay our respects. One thing i want to point out, when you see the empty seats, that is the diet. Thats where we were welcomed into malaysia. But thats in japan. In the diet, you see these empty seats. They ring the bell and those seats are filled in a second. People popped up. In any event, for these and other reasons this is dmc. This is the border. That building in the back is north korea. That is where the Prime Minister of japan we were very honored to be welcomed by him. They are talking baseball, i guess. In any event my colleagues have heard me say this again and again. What i was a student i was at the inauguration of john f. Kennedy before many of you were born and perhaps before your parents were born. People made a big fuss and students learned all over the world and in our country that the president said ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. You all learned that in school, right . Shake your head yes. In any event, the next line struck me. Citizens of the world ask not what america can do for you but what we can do working together for the freedom of mankind. That is what this trip was about. That is what President Biden is about. Working together. No condescension but consensusbuilding. That was the spirit we brought, working together, listening to priorities, sharing hours. Finding Common Ground and appreciating our shared values. In that regard, it was inspiring. We come back in formed, inspired, and again, ready to work. One point that has to be made about this. China does what it does in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. It has an impact on american working families because you cant tie up the waterways. It just increases cost. You just saw a picture of somebody with a selfie. That was a dissident from Tiananmen Square. I met him when he was 21 years old when he came right out of Tiananmen Square while people were being crushed under the tanks. Mr. Chairman has been fighting to highlight what is happening in the genocide in china. For many reasons it was a very unifying trip. Those people were killed by the north koreans. In any event, we will take any questions you may have. [laughter] reporter safe and sound. Welcome back. There are reports your son was on the trip with you. Speaker pelosi yes he was. His role was to be my escort. We usually invited spouses. Not all could come but i was proud he was there. Reporter were there any business dealings . Speaker pelosi of course he did not. Reporter china announced the military goal would you expect the saber rattling for a while . [inaudible] Speaker Pelosi i think what we saw with china is they were trying to establish a new normal. And we just cant let that happen. Mr. Chairman, do you want to respond to that . We dont know what the chinese plan. But we know that they were trying to push their way closer to whatever thoughts they have about the future. Clearly, china had their plans before we took our trip. What they wanted to do was to try to deter us for going to visit our friends and allies. And what this trip did, which they did not expect, is show that no matter what president xi says, we are going to stand by our friends and allies. I think that china now has to take a different viewpoint on it because we are unequivocal on what our positions will be with reference to our friends and our allies. The president visiting when he did and talking about being involved in the region. And now the house of representatives led by the speaker of the house gave xi a message that he is not going to dictate to us on what we do and what we dont do. I would hope that he now understands, he should talk to us about those things. On climate, thats really important to us. In keeping the status quo. Nobody wants to change anything. I hope there calculus has changed as they now pull back from the tests and the training period of the last few days. Reporter [inaudible] Speaker Pelosi who would like to respond . Yes, that was discussed. This is an ongoing issue. Given the various needs we are trying to supply with regard to ukraine, there is increased stress on the supply chain within the Defense Industrial base. I cant go into details, but we are taking steps with regard to this particular issue. And we intend to fulfill all of our obligations to all of our partners and others that are counting on us for these vital supplies. And i could tell you on the Foreign Affairs committee, we are working on bills now to help expedite and reduce red tape to get defense items that are needed out in a quicker fashion. We are looking at that right now. We may have some hearings on it. We are looking for ways to expedite it. Reporter given the comments from the president a few weeks ago where he said it was not a good idea to go to taiwan right now [inaudible] Speaker Pelosi we really do not address any questions about our travels before trips. In keeping with that, i wont comment on the comment the president made before our trip. But i am very proud of our military. Their preparation actually, i think it minimized the impact of the chinese on our trip. They took very good care of us. I dont remember them ever telling us not to go from the military. They did say our soft power in the region is tremendously important to go along and complement what they are doing in the region and how we need to work collectively. The people want to know what we are doing and how we are invested in them. They really welcomed a lot of dialogue, us being there, and talking about soft power and how we can engage in the region in that manner also. Reporter do you think the department of justice or fbi should come forward and offer some kind of explanation or context for the raid at maralago . Speaker pelosi i think we made it really clear that this meeting was about this trip. I will have another press conference about legislation and whatever else is going on. With all due respect to your question. Reporter [inaudible] Speaker Pelosi im sorry, its hard to hear you. Reporter i know security was important on your trip, but in terms of security at home, are there concerns about your own security given the matter you talked about . [inaudible] Speaker Pelosi with all due respect, i place your question in that same category. We did have a briefing that was long planned before any of the actions of this week. It was long planned for all members of congress. On this subject . Reporter [inaudible] chinas sanctions against you and your immediate family members. [laughter] Speaker Pelosi who cares . Lets enlarge the issue. What we are talking about is what the distant wished chairman and others have mentioned. The struggle between democracy and autocracy. Autocracy is not a peaceful place. Whether it is the South China Sea, the straits of taiwan, whatever is happening in tibet, hong kong and the rest. We did not go there to talk about china. We went there to praise taiwan. We went there to show our friendship, to say china cannot isolate taiwan. That is what it was about. That is incidental to me and no relevance whatsoever. We will be together tomorrow at the next day to talk about other subjects. But for now, i want to thank my colleagues. They were just so fabulous on this trip because they brought knowledge, they brought values, they brought strategic thinking. They brought respect for the people that we met. May i say while we praised our troops and the general who took us around, they were fabulous. We showcase them and praise them. We showcased them and praised them. And on the diplomatic side, ambassador goldberg, ambassador emmanuel i was leading up to him. Our former colleague, rahm emanuel. And representative kirk in taiwan, we praise him for his diplomacy which is very much the soft power that is important to our security as well. Let me close by once again saluting our president for what he has done in our north atlantic relations which is so important as well as the initiative with the indo Pacific Economic framework. Thank you all so much. Thank you. [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Visit ncicap.
