K you for joining i suspect you will give your spent on what happened this week dealing with public unions and the topic of fees. Mr. Matlin, what is the case about and what are the issues involving the case . Idea is thatsic unions have to provide service for everyone, all workers in a agency. Ar government whether they represent those workers or not. The Supreme Court is deciding if the fees they can collect from fees, that workers are never having to join the union, if the fees are legal or not. Issue is that this is a continuation of a larger attack on workers and their ability to join unions. That is troubling in the future because it is hard to imagine how you have a strong middle class without strong unions. Most byo is represented these types of unions . Is about teachers in california. They are a big part of workers that are unionized. We dont know where the Supreme Court will go. It could localize teachers, but could be about publicsector workers and broader. The topic of fees was one fees as former political speech was another one for the justices as well . Guest pedro, that is an important part of the discussion. The Supreme Court has gotten back to the First Amendment and if it is violated by the compulsory Fee Structure that forces people to support an association that allegedly speaks for them. A former member of the union was a lead in the case. She try to change and couldnt do that. They had significant disagreements on various issues that everyone had to agree to or except. Everyone had to accept, because the union was exclusive monopoly bargaining agent. She fought back. The davis point builds on cases going back to 1977 with a case that the direct to Work Foundation litigated. We try to get to the First Amendment question, but the court dodged it and created a structure that regulates compulsory fees saying some can repaid, charged, a condition of employment, and some cant. Until 2016, there has been a steady attempt to move that issue back to the First Amendment. For the first time in harris versus quan, we talked about it on cspan, the court got back to the First Amendment question called strict scrutiny. It has a cost than to show question and as a constitutional question. We finally moved to a point called leonard in 2001, knox in 2012, harrison in 2014, and frieder takes it to the First Amendment. If i can compel you to speak for me when you disagree with me. Host as far as the general welfare of the employee in the union . Of benefit isa something we can talk about. You have to unpack that concept. It is about fees, but they are compelled. If you dont pay the fees as david mentioned, no one can be forced to join a union, but they can be forced to pay 100 percent of dues or fees to keep their job. It is interesting and the argument, i think it was Justice Scalia that talked about how everything unions do is political, because they are dressing you government. They are addressing government. That affects how the Government Works itself out, spends money, and his political speech. Is a firstbout this amendment ideal as far as fees are concerned . Guest the court case that he mentioned set a reasonable compromise that unions are forced to provide everyone the same basic protections. In order to do that, they say you need to pay fees that cover the cost of that, but you do not have to pay the cost of their political activities. That was the compromise they worked out. The idea was if you have to pay for good services, higher wages, better benefits, protections and disputes, that that infringes on your freespeech rights brings up questions. Does that require you to join the bar association, which many states have . To practice law . Have to get rid of those. Wherenk about the idea of you live you have to pay for your utilities. The Company Might do political act remedies you disagree with, but you have to get your utilities. A Homeowners Association. Lots of people live in a Homeowners Association, and they get benefits. In therything you do Homeowners Association you agree with, but you get the benefit of a nice place to live. If you think you dont have to pay for it because you think it is political this opens a 10 of worms for a compromise that has worked reasonably well for 40 years. It is a radical decision. A radicalhis decision . What is wrong about paying for voice in lieu of the worker . Guest it talks about freedom of speech and association. Is in the decline of his country, getting really angry. Then there is another story where he forgot citibank. How do you control citibank and and fairly and write fairly about Goldman Sachs, citibank, and yet you all the money with a personal guarantee. He obviously did not want voters to know he is controlled, lock stock and barrel, by citibank and Goldman Sachs. Hypocritical, to be honest with you. I think it is very hypocritical. I was there when we thought the u. S. Steel building was coming down. These two massive wonderful firemen. We heard a screech steel on steel. Theres a couple of days after the building we had a crew of people to help. Hey needed a lot of help ive never seen anything like i saw. They heard a screech. Everyone thought the u. S. Steel building was coming down. It was not so far from us. These two workers, massive guys they were massive. Im a big guy. They grabbed me. I never knew i could run that fast. As fast. Running just they had my arms, and we were running. They are incredible people. When you think, firemen coming in from long island and other parts of new york you are insulting 25 Million People if you talk about the area. They heard about it. Firemen driving in the had nothing to do with it from long island and other parts. And allin from iowa over the country. We had Fire Departments from iowa coming in. It was incredible to see and witness. People coming in from all over. Firemen coming entering the blaze new the building was in serious trouble. They got there through the tunnels, up, stop, and run. They run into the buildings, they run up the stairs. They knew it could collapse. Everyone knew it could collapse. The building coming down. First building, second building. Pretty good, i think, probably after iowa or New Hampshire, there will be a lot of people that leave. Or 14ou have 42 and 15 people they are talking about, that is a tremendous percentage. I would take that if we have three, but we certainly take it if we have 50 people. It has been an amazing run. I have really enjoyed it. People say to me, what have you learned . The guy goes on Television Last night and says i voted for i raised aa, and tremendous amount of money for john mccain, had dinner with john mccain and his wife right before the election, and i had to listen to glenn beck saying i voted for obama. Most people would not bring it up, but it is sort of a good thing to bring up, if you can if you can have the experience of talking to people. Some people see Something Like that, and they believe in. Theres no one to review them. Do you agree with that . You agree . All you do is make him a little bit bigger. He is a fellow guy failed guy. It is so dishonest there with the media. So dishonest. The things that i have learned, more than anything else, is how smart the public is, how caring the public is, and when i flip stadiums, i philip places its incredible, like today, so. C. , would you find an institution with so much unchecked power. Creating new money naturally lowers Interest Rates pric ratee price of using money. Throughout our countrys history, price controls have never worked and the feds price control on Interest Rates has also not worked. Think bank bac back to the housg bubble. The reason for this is simple big banks, corporations, and Government Entities received the Federal Reserves money long before anyone else. H once referred to the easy money policy as the reverse robin hood effect. If you have access to credit, if youve got a big Balance Sheet, the fed has made you richer. Over the past 15 years, the price of white bread has increased by over 50 while the price of aches has more than doubled. Eggs has more than doubled. The price of housing has also appreciated significantly in many areas. When adjusting for inflation, the price of housing in San Francisco has increased by 58 over just 25 years. Real Household Income for regular americans has declined 10 over the past 15 years. Higher rent and higher grocery bills cause lowerincome workers to incur more loans and credit card debt, which involve far higher Interest Rates than what the banks and wall street are currently paying. These lowincome workers do not get the luxury of receiving the feds newly created money first, nor do they have the luxury of receiving the nearzero Interest Rates that the wealthy do. As a result, one thipg is for certain the feds price control on Interest Rates acts as a hidden tax on the less welltodo. The fed also exacerbates income inequality by paying large commercial banks 12 billion in interest. This is a departure from nearly a century of practice. While individual savers earn practically no interest, the big banks are given 12 billion per year in interest. Theres a revolving door often between the fed, the treasury, and wall street. Its a revolving door in a building that is all too eager to enrich big banks and asset holders at the expense of everyone else. I think its about time we pull back the curtain to uncover this cloak of secrecy once and for all. Who is receiving the loans from the fed today . Who is the fed paying interest to . Are there any conflicts of interest about how these payments are determined . Are there any checks and balances on the size of these payments . The Federal Reserve act actually forbids the fed from buying some of the troubled assets that it bought in 2008, yet they did it anyway. Given all these Unanswered Questions and given the sharp increase in the risk. Feds Balance Sheet, it is unquestionably necessary for the fed to be audited more thoroughly than it has in the past. Audit the fed is just three pages long, and it simply says that the Government Accountability office, the g. A. O. , which is a nonpartisan, Apolitical Agency in charge, that they be allowed to audit the fed, a full and thorough audit. Currently the g. A. O. Is not allowed to monitor the feds monetary deliberations or open market transactions. The g. A. O. Was also forbidden from reviewing agreements with foreign central banks. During the downturn in 2008, trillions of dollars were spent, much of it, or quite a bit of it on foreign banks and were not allowed to know what occurred, to whom this was given, and for what purpose. The fed audit in its current form is virtually futile. When these restrictions were added to the audit in the 1970s, the g. A. O. Testified before congress saying, we do not see how we can satisfactorily audit the Federal Reserve without the authority to examine its largest single category of Financial Transactions and assets. To grasp just how limited the current audit is, recall that in 2009 democratic congressman alan grayson asked thenfed chairman ben bee bernanke, which Foreign Countries received 500 billion in loans from the fed. Bernanke was unwilling to name which countries or banks received the half trillion dollars worth of funds. The fed swpped a half a trillion dollars to Foreign Countries, in secret, and did not even have the decency under testimony in congress to report the detaisms but it gets worse. Democratic senator Bernie Sanders also asked bernanke who received 2. 2 trillion that the fed lent out during the financial crisis . Again, bernanke refused to give a direct answer. In the 2011 doddfrank law, congress ordered a limited onetime g. A. O. Audit of fed actions. During the financial crisis, that audit uncovered that the fed lent out over 16 trillion to domestic and foreign banks during the financial crisis.
