These victims and family members have come from all over the country today. Thank you for being here. But also i would like to recognize congressman Bob Goodlatte who has joined us today also. I am honored to introduce the department of Homeland Security secretary john kelly. [applause] i want to thank everybody for coming today. First, i want to thank some very special guest. We are honored to have you here today. These are peoples lives who have been affected. These victims and family members have come from all over the thank you tom. What we are doing here today there is nothing but goodness and what we are doing here today in establishing this organization. We would like to thank everyone, thank you for being here today. Family members, my heart goes out to you. I do understand what you have been through. I would like to thank all of the victims families to help us shine a light on a very important to group of americans, that is the victims of these crimes. We are opening an Important Office today in the ice family. We call it the voice office, victims of immigration crime engagement office. Enhancing Public Safety in the interior of the United States is the executive order. We are giving the victims of crime by illegal aliens a voice of their own. These victims as represented here are unique and all too often ignored. There are casualties of crimes that should have never taken place, because the people who victimize them should have never been here in our country. These crimes were preventable, but because of years and years of policies complicating immigration and enforcement efforts and a politically correct approach to Public Safety, there are mothers who will never again receive a mothers day card from their son. Husbands will not just their gush will never again chris their wives, will never again case therewives, what they and their families deserve to be treated fairly. There are people like the police a in mesa, arizona, his mother is here with us today. The person with the boys and girls club, officer mendoza was finishing his shift and was hit and killed by a drunk driving illegal alien. He was just 32 years old. The perpetrator had three times the legal limit of alcohol. The suspect had been arrested 20 years earlier, and instead of being removed, he was released back into the community. We can never fully heal these families, but we can give them a voice. As President Trump said at the dhs headquarters, we hear you, we see you, and you will never, ever be ignored again. With the creation of the voice office, we will support victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens. The voice office will support victims and their families by making information about their case available and directing them to various resources. All i have to do is dial 185548voice and our officers will work with them to let them know about services and Information Available to them. One Service Available is an Automated Service that tracks the custody status of the illegal alien in question. Is he behind bars . Has he been removed from the country . Victims have a right to know. Voice can also direct officers who can answer victims questions about their case, immigrations proceedings, or just help explain enforcement and removal process. All of this can seem very far very foreign to people who are not indoctrinated in this very complicated, i would say overly complicated, series of laws. The voice office is there to help people understand, but more than answering questions for voice, voice can put victims in touch with people who can arrange a large pool of resources. These specialists frequently help people and investigation cases ranging from Human Trafficking to childhood exploitation. The can use their Resource Networks to help victims and their families they can use their Resource Networks to help victims and their families. Until today, those of victimized have had no point of contact in our federal government dedicated to this issue and to them. Families would call and send letters all over washington hoping that someone in some agency would respond. That ends today. Years ago, kathy inman lost her son after an illegal alien crashed into the car. Suffers fromshe serious injuries. They join us here today. They sent a letter asking about the location of the perpetrator who is believed to be hiding in mexico. Just a year later, the department of justice responded. They made it clear there was nothing they could do. These victims deserve more than a letter. They deserve a voice. And so the voice office will be a great resource for these families across our country. Like any new office, we expect voice to grow over time. Our mission is clear, and that is to acknowledge the exceptional damage called by criminal illegal aliens and help the victims of these crimes. It is also important that the voice hotline is correction, its also important to note what the voice hotline is not. It is not for reporting crimes or for curious reporters. Victims of crimes by illegal aliens and their families have suffered tremendously. It is for them. They have been ignored and are often without a voice. That ends today. I congratulate tom homan, acting director of the voice office. Barbara gonzales, thank you, you have done unbelievable work here. It is a passion for you. I was almost getting afraid yesterday you were so passionate. Good for you. Everyone at ice who has had a part, thank you so much. And again to miss mendoza, ms. Innman and all of the other victims here today, we thank you. Even though we cannot bring back your loved ones or heal your injuries, know that the administration of the department of Homeland Security is listening and does not want you to go through this alone, thank you so very much. Appreciate it. [applause] are you going to take questions . Mr. Secretary . [indiscernible] are you going to take questions . A Senate Committee investigated waste in the federal government. Witnesses included the comptroller of the General Accountability Office and the Inspector General for tax administration. This is one one hour and 40 minutes
