Before the king leaves the abbey this last gesture of the coronation he prepares to meet the leaders and president s whose presence are here today. They all have a declaration to show him appreciation. And he is thankful. In on the other side of the breaks didnt memorial in the tomb of the unknown warrior. In just a small acknowledgment here the governor general, his presence here today is also valued in a reminder of the late queen. And of course the bishops and king the third the oldest person to be crowned in the United Kingdom emerges from westminster attic abby in the crowd. His whole life has been preparing for readiness for this day and despite his age there is much he still wants to achieve in his reign. With the abbey bells founding the news of his coronation throughout the United Kingdom and beyond charless journey is about to begin. The bells ring out guiding us through that beautiful and moving service through Westminster Abbey and this was happening outside. The rain was falling but within the rain we saw the formation of the Largest Military secession in this country for 70 years over 4000 turned out, military services and the commonwealth, marching bands make this a feast for the eyes it stretches for miles. From all the way to westminster. It is a magnificent path, already there on the inside of Parliament Square and every regiment represented. And at the head of this procession leading the way is the brigade major, his grandfather took part in Queen Elizabeths coronation in 1953. Behind him we have the house of cavalry and behind them the kings troops commanded by major fran site. And the band regimen leaves leads British Overseas Territories and we have a commanded by Group Captain Stephen Harrison and the army corps which includes all of this. Interestingly they were all marched off at the same time and they are waiting for a command from Sergeant Major andrew stokes, we have mentioned before he is one of the leading architects of this procession and indeed both processions. He will give a command and that will be passed down to every Single Person and they will move up at the same time and they will march to the same beat in the same tune, that is the first time that has been attempted and they have been rehearsing for six weeks. So that all of the bands are synchronized towards the back of the succession, you may think this is the kind of thing you would find in fairytales and in fact i would suspect fairytales were inspired by this. First seen in public in 1762 when george the third, it is not 260 years later. And alongside me waiting for the carriage, i know you are anticipating this hugely. It is really exciting. Quite an impressive sight. It is i was just thinking, i was speaking to him yesterday and asking how they get everyone to step off at the same time and it is a prerecorded message with every bass drummer of every band on the parade. There is the command and will take a few seconds in the procession will move on together. That is remarkable. The whole parade started together in tandem here with a countdown such a remarkable thing to see. And so begins the coronation procession, the route back from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace. This is where the cone begins because the service is solemn, it is serious. It was extremely emotional for those who took part and watched it, everything so far has gone well and that golden coach, it may not be the most comfortable ride but it looks immaculate. It is made with gold leaf overlay over would and in the interior has satin and velvet in the panels are painted. It ensures that the king and queen are the driest in the parade. That is true there we see the commonwealth troops and flags being carried on the outside as well. And there are eight troops in total in the coronation procession. The king being carried by guardsmen. Here we have the first of the carriages following the gold state coach and you can see the prince and princess of wales and their three children, Prince George who did a great role there is page of honor. And prince louis as well. Very exciting for them. In the king and queen, the king wearing his state crown and carrying a scepter. With the cross and the orb and wearing the robe of state and the queen with her newly made robes of state. The queen marys crown. The gold state coach is drawn by eight windsor horses and among those writing, the first female writer. And there we can see prince louis with a good view waving enthusiastically, she is wearing a very beautiful dress and it is very similar in design almost matching the one her mother is wearing. Right at the front of the procession halfway down, more already. Do you see the drawn horses at the front, written by Richard Brown and corporal they did so well to control them. It seems tricky. A very quick change and a leg up for the Princess Royal because you saw her lead into a side door and in a matter of minutes she is now mounted and not far behind her brother the king. She is in waiting and i think its fair to say the best writer rider on parade. She knows what shes doing and she is writing a horse called thought extremely comfortable. She is riding with the other kernels of the regiment. We will have a look still ahead because its a particularly impressive sight because of their white gloves you can really see those arms marching in time. Now you can feel the energy coming back to the crowds, they have been watching the service on the big screen that this is what they have been waiting for. This is why they slept overnight to get this position so as the procession came by they would feel it as well as see it and catch a sight may be of those Young Princes waving at them. Princess charlotte and the princess of wales. With their red plumes and blue tunics behind the state coach. And that is their role isnt it the two regimens, with the cavalry very much to protect the monarch. They are. Whenever the monarch is on a ceremonial parade their job is protecting him. The gold state coach also flanked by waterman, palace footman, grooms all on foot. And 28 representatives from british territories. In the prince and princess of wales have recently enjoyed a visit to wales and stayed in a b and b and went in with the Mountain Rescue Team to see the work they do. The royal navy here making a turn in front of the statue of charles the first and through admiral arch. Commanded by captain shaughnessy there a Marine Engineer in the royal navy. This is her last duty in uniform of command of the royal navy. And the band of the Royal Marines with their white helmets. I think that royal blue on the decorative and windsor great it looks so striking and there have been various colors use, silver, and gold for the Golden Jubilee, and the king picking royal blue. Coming up the memorial for women of world war ii. And back on the mile we can see the full glory of this enormous procession. We said its the largest in 70 years. It is as you said earlier as it makes its way through, you got the Royal Air Force flanked by the royal armed core and the army corps following them and behind them the jew near army corps junior army corps. And then as we have seen the royal navy and marines, they are closest to the monarch and behind them the footman. It dismounted. The gold state coach making Good Progress with the National Anthem. All five regiments of the foot guard now making that turn and they will have to funnel themselves through those three arches so it is quite a feat for them. It certainly is and its going to get even more challenging when they come through the gates of Buckingham Palace. We see there behind the foot guard a number of organizations, as you mentioned before the kings bodyguard and the Royal Company of archbishops. All the foot guards there ahead of them in there you see they dismounted, the cavalry the blues and royals and the lifeguard. Commonwealth troops in the overseas territories. It is wonderful to know the reach that today has around the world. 447 representatives from commonwealth territories on parade in the king is the head of the commonwealth and very interested to learn 45 of the 56 Common Wealth countries were received. Year after year his First Official trip to a commonwealth country. You see that grandstand behind, they have got a lovely view. Back with the prince and princess of wales as the children all at the same school in windsor, i think their parents are keen to ensure they have an outdoor lifestyle as much as possible. A normal childhood as much as possible. There we find the duke and duchess of edinburgh with their children Lady Louise Windsor and james. Louise is 19 and is particularly appreciative of the carriage driving. A great love of hers. And in the final carriage the duke and duchess of york. And the king and queen comella have a chance to enjoy the crown, and acknowledge them as much as possible. The canadian mounted police, the mounties have a wonderful relationship with camilla and have gifted many horses to the queen and giving a horse to the king that he will ride for the kings parade in future years. The mounties have a very prime position. I think all of those horses have been gifted to the royal family. They now belong to the royal family. An extraordinary thing for them to be able to do. And right at the head of the royal procession. Passing the Queen Victoria memorial and i mentioned this earlier all of the marching as they make their way into the garden of Buckingham Palace and will form their. They are ahead of the gold state coach and have not had the chance to see him since he has been crowned but they will at the garden. And that is the house of provision. You make a point about the importance of music to both the infantry and cavalry. It is but also the idea that the music is a morale booster and lifts everybody. If youre going into battle and have music in front of you it is reassuring and it for the enemy to hear that loud noise coming towards them, it plays many different parts. The church of wales and Princess Charlotte in Prince Georges and prince louis, enjoying their view. They might compete for show and tell at school dont you think . I think they will. They have metals, they gave metals to all the pages heroic is the word. I was talking about the insight, they were extremely heavy with the rain but she was carrying a sword. See there the flags of the commonwealth nations. The princess of wales looking absolutely beautiful. Prince of wales is wearing underneath those ropes, here the welsh guards. You can see the colonel and the princess of wales with the irish guards. Both of them wearing formal robes and mantles. Here we have the infantry. The iconic red berries barriers connecting to the king jumping out of an airplane i think he did it a total of seven times he said if i am going to be there colonel i need to jump out of airplanes. The air force here. Honestly i think it is frightening all the time. The realms and the attendance of territories, of great britain. A great honor for them. I was listening to to sir david yesterday evening, the queens coronation 70 years ago in the history and you look at all of the personal filming going on and sing with us represents and all the individual footage taken it must be covered by more cameras. Official cameras and personal cameras than ever. The background stand on the left is where we have care workers and veterans and those representing various charities. Good news therefore the royal navy. I was talking earlier you can see the gate at the top right where they are all going through and this is a new maneuver which has been designed specifically for this parade to reduce the flank edge of a frontage of 12 to six. The navy executed that beautifully. The street liners there. Still standing there, i have been there since 9 00 this morning and saluting the royal family. I want to ask you about the street liners how is that measured . You could see in the back on their right in the middle to the left it is when they have a 30 inch pace and they use that to get the five paces they need between each street liner. There is a pace sticking world champions championship did you know that . Hes enjoying this i think. All of them will remember this, they are old enough to remember it. [indiscernible] and the duke and edinburgh. They have supported many charities, youth recreation as well. You can see movement of the coach. Compared by those that have written in it ridden in it. You can if you wish listen to on a listen to uninterrupted coverage. And full coverage on iplayer is available immediately. You can see the very back of the procession, the front of it has already reached the gardens of Buckingham Palace. The back of it is in its last procession. The colors are being loaded. Yes as the carriage goes by. Those carrying the colors are lowering the colors. King charles the third is the commander and chief. And he holds the highest rank in all of the British Field services. Captain general. You can see the bottom left there, the color, down. As the carriage goes by. All of these colors and flags. Im sure the viewers have spotted a number of horses that have been clearly spooked by waving flags and cheering crowds. It is amazing the way they manage to control their horses. Particularly the musicians. They do not necessarily have hands on the reins. You can see the princess there. The gold coach, so relaxed. Its not easy riding, but riding in uniform, and that makes it a little bit harder. At the wheels are quite sharp. [indiscernible] you mentioned that the rinse of wales has been to wales and very much wants to reinforce the link with wales as a country and welsh produce, and goods. There is the guard of honor again. His hand on the coach, the guard. Only ever carried in the presence of the monarch. [laughter] he did so well. I dont think theyll be going to the garden. I think the gardener would be happy they would be taken aback by the news. And the golden state coach disappears. One last look of prince louis there. We will see all those involved marching, and then lineup in the garden for a chance to salute the king and queen. And that was impressive in scale, and execution and accuracy. So unique to get representatives from across all of the armed forces, all at the same time in a parade together to celebrate the new monarch. To those who have planted them the work that has gone into rehearsing, some of those rehearsals going through the night. Indeed. We always expect our troops and others to do a good job. But so many today, its not what they do every day, theyve come from their airbases and their ships and their regiment barracks all over the country, and indeed the world. And today, you can see the colors and all those regiments represented there. All in memorial. A wonderful glorious night. Hugely enjoyed. One last duty for those military personnel to perform. Thank you. We will have some thoughts on this with our historian and broadcaster. I think Little Prince louis is the only one who needs a little rest. The rest of us couldnt get enough. What was your initial reaction to what weve seen . It was a medieval site of a king and a shirt kneeling before an altar. It build toward a crescendo and then the crowning moment it was so timeless. Properly timeless and still, the fabulous parade that has come through the street here, the biggest parade since 1953. We have so much tradition there but at the same time, there were so many elements of the coronation. And women possessed key roles. And one of the heads of state right there at the front and female bishops. It was a very 21st century coronation but it hasnt changed much since the old testament. Lets go inside the abby. As robert said, this is an ancient and medieval tradition. Deceased to see things that no one else has seen. To have adult memories of the coronation, you would have to be in your 90s, and most of us would never witness that. Something that has been dormant for years can be revived and is seen in all of its complexity and all of those layers interacting it is quite remarkable. There was a moment where you and i looked at each other and it was the moment when the prince of wales pledged his allegiance and his oh oath to his father and kissed him on the cheek and it was pregnant with emotion. It was a reminder of the queens coronation in 1953, suddenly the serenity breaks through all of this tradition and it was a reassuring moment. And clearly, that to him, it was a poignant scene. And Queen Camilla, i didnt have a chance to ask before, i know it is correct to use either title, but now seems the time where it the nation and the palace feels comfortable with the name Queen Camilla. Until today queen consort was the name everyone used. Because in the early days you didnt want to confuse the queen, Queen Camilla with the late queen. Just as Queen Elizabeth became queen mother to distinguish her from Queen Elizabeth the second. It is Queen Camilla from beginning to end. And thats quote we are going to say from now on. Sometimes they refer to her as t qc, and now it can be the Queen Camilla. The parade itself, as robert was saying, the solemnity, and entirely appropriately within the abby and then the drums. They beat to end we all sort of raised our self up for that even through the raindrop very colorful and vibrant it continued this wonderful parade. The ceremony took us back to Westminster Abbey, the side of the coronation. It is very different in scale to the military powers much produced. And in some ways thats a good thing. But all of this color all of these other conditions are marching so quickly. And what about the royals, we are about to see something, that we have never seen. Its one of those days in the back garden of Buckingham Palace, but should be look out for. In a way, its recognizing the effort that all of the armed forces have put in. They have been rehearsing this in the middle of the night, theyve been standing in the pouring rain, they are proud to come here and salute the commanderinchief. But if you are in parade to you almost never see the commanderinchief because you have to march in front of him. Except for the street nights because they can see him. That everyone who takes part in this procession should be given the opportunity to salute their commanderinchief in the end. The idea was to march them through the garden, sorry to the garden. Its a bad week for the garden. Theres a garden party next tuesday as well. Exit they are going to march through, i think as they mentioned, the forces are going to have a different route they will be too much through the garden. They will lined up on the palace floor, and they will face the king when he is through the palace. He is obviously getting ahead of the gold state coach. And receiving mostly a sigh of relief. And hes walking through from the east side. He is getting to the west front. To end the terrace there he will take the salute of his troops. And i think you will be very grateful and pleased to see him. I think shes ready to tell us the scene that is being said in the garden of Buckingham Palace. Thank you. Going through right now and they played such an important role. A rare opportunity to see the gardens of Buckingham Palace. And all of those who were on foot for the coronation procession have formed up to they will be shortly saluting the kings. 49 acres, the largest private gardens in london. They have over 1000 trees. 355 wild plant species and it is here that the kings renowned the love of gardening began. And the queen gave him and his sister a small bench in the gardens. And an essential feature is the late. Lake. It was originally an overflow, and it is a selfregulating ecosystem. Its quite emotional. The pipes and the drums and the arrangement, from the Royal Air Force. 18 different sets of pipes and doubt and drums. What an astonishing site that is. The military on display, all of the armed forces putting on a remarkable show for the king, queen and the rest of us. We should have a flight path to come as well. And while that wonderful military procession left the abby after the coronation service. So much history in the abby today. There were so many who were not only in the heart of the history, but bishop rosen biz ship and bishop galli you were two of the three female bishops who have ever taken part in a coronation. What was it like for you . It was an honor and privilege. There was so much innovation in that service as well as the historic elements. It was very special to be amongst of the first three female bishops there have only been women bishop since 2016, and it has been a real joy for us. I am deeply honored to have been part of this historic moment. Onceinalifetime. And the moments where the queen went around the queen went around the king and you were so close, what was that like . It felt like the most intimate part of the service. And you have a beautiful queen. And that spine chilling moment, it begins and you have a sense that something is happening even though it is beneath the physical part of the service. It was special. He emerged from the screen undressed and you think, something has happened here. And of course i felt transported. It was amazing. X and his ship you also gave Queen Camilla the rod to touch. What was that like for you . Again, how does one get to be at the heart of it. It was such an honor and privilege to be part of that. And it is going to stay with me forever. You are both right there very much making history yourself. And inside the abby, what was that like . It was joyful. I think really joyful. But also the profound and intimate moment a deeply sacred moment. Its at the heart of every christian service. So incentive to all we do all the time but it is a very good contacts. Thank you both very much. Congratulations. Thank you. Perfect timing back in the gardens of Buckingham Palance Buckingham Palace, the National Anthem will be played and it will be led by Lieutenant Colonel david beringer. [shouting commands] i just saw colonel tom at the top of the steps. He is giving the signal to the Royal Highness is that the private that the pilot is ready to see him, and his his last act in uniform. 4000 people played a key role today, the pipes and drums, and commonwealth countries, representing 56 nations. The raf saw 25 of them on parade today. And every regiment of the army is represented. Regular and reserves. The royal navy, and the Royal Marines are spotted by their helmets. And the five regiments that are the troops of the royal household. And the whole row, is all of the colors, all of the standards of those on parade. To the left, the service chief and the heads of all the services. Toward the back we might catch later the mascot of the irish guards. The irish wolfhound, the one dog that is operating. There are the service chiefs. Teams colby waiting for the Royal Highness is to come from the top of the steps. They are keeping a careful eye on him. You can see the pace that i was talking about. And King Charles Iii stepping out now to the west terrace of looking him palace Buckingham Palace. Queen camilla following him. And Prince George there still playing the role of page of honor. [shouting commands] [National Anthem] [shouting commands] giving them the order now to remove headdress and call out the three cheers. [shouting commands] three cheers for his majesty the king, and her majesty, the queen. Hip hip. [hooray ] hip hip [hooray ] [shouting commands] and now the drums are playing, tune called King Charles Iii. I think they are reflecting on the job well executed. Ive never heard three chairs resound so loudly and in open space. I was the wrong person to come and take on this, i am in cheers im the wrong person to commentate on this, i am in tears. We will see the king and queen shortly alongside members of the working royal family. And 60 aircraft are filling the skies above. But as far as the ground is concerned. The job of these 4000 and that the royal navy has played is almost complete they are now going to pick up their weapons and now, they cant look down. Well done. Overall, what would your reflections be on what youve seen at the coronation procession weve talked about the scale of the prayer of the parade, its the biggest thing ive seen in my time and ive been serving for as you said, 34 years, but i think that the delivery of the most extremely complex military operation, because that was it. A military operation delivered to perfection and it was a wonderful tribute to our king, and it makes you proud to be british. Most of these servicemen and women have been on the go since 3 30 this morning when they left their bases to take the train to london. And nearly, 11 hours later they will now disperse they will head back by train to those bases. And they can be very proud of the part that they played in the procession that was fit for a king and a queen. Apollo robert and while robert and david are still with me, we could hear those three cheers, and robert, there was a sign from the king a sigh of pleasure, a sigh of aspiration, may be a mixture of both. It was a very fond reflection, i think a proud commanderinchief chief. Thinking, we got here. Hes been following these rehearsals for weeks now. And all the preparations. This has not happened at a coronation before. This is a shape of things to come, its a new reign. Its important to remember that king charles trains as a military jet pilot. He is trained to fly military helicopters. So for him, its not just a ceremonial role. Hes worked with these people, he respects these people and he understands. I think it shows what a deep connection between the royal family the church. And im sure there is relief now that the ceremony is over in the day is done. That there is a lot of questions and analysis about what is it tell us about britain and the monarchy and the britain and the difference between modern britain and many of these institutions which are religious and military. Every part of the armed forces was there in front of them. And weve never seen anything like that, for many years the moniker of commanderinchief was such a strong thing. He has, as we heard earlier has played such a part. At the university he first loved to fly. The welsh instructor was going to be the prince of wales. And philip pinney, a key we told him to fly. He got his wings and went into the navy. He did a parachute jump with the paras, hes rona and theres always someone around you in uniform every day at your life, even in the lunch table coming they are a forceful family. The windsors are an ultimate forces family. Lets do a little bit of instant analysis, of what you seen today we kind of thought we knew we would see, but given what youve seen today, in front of us weve seen the most spectacular view, does it feel fresh to come that does it feel like a difference. Theres an argument that it almost accentuates and makes us more aware of how ancient and unlike the country these traditions are. We are an unceremonious people with compared to a place like spain or places like japan we have very few ceremonies but we have this ancient ceremony thats gone on for at least a thousand years in the same building. That gulf between us as a unceremonious and unreligious people with an ancient religious ceremony shows not just inattention but contradiction. Im not sure where the tunes are coming from, we understand, i think its the crowds. They are coming from behind the barriers where they have been watching the incredible display before them, their patients has been rewarded with that spectacle and there we are, it was last june at the Platinum Jubilee that we saw scenes of this i think it was 22,000 people came to pay their respects. To pay their tributes and see elizabeth who had been on the throne for 70 years. They came to pay their respects to king charles the third, looking at the scene, thats quite something is in it . The last time we saw this river here last summer, but i think what is on the line, and the flags are on the line, we do have an era of soft power. Of influence, and persuasion and charm, but today i am most cried there. These are not, by any means loyal subjects, people are all over, being watched all over the world, you have a crowd like this with a handful of policemen in ordinary helmets, and its very goodnatured. That goes into the fact that it reminds me of the Golden Jubilee which produced amazing scenes which were used by the british olympic bid to persuade the world when we were trying to get the london olympics, it was just like this. And hows of nowhere companies, fabulous crowds, and in a moment we will see what it means to both parties. There are 6000 media people here representing broadcasters from 22 countries. This is a virgin this is a version of britain, it is something that is watched around the world. And people appear to still be interested. I think a spectacle and a ceremony of this lineage is fascinating to people around the world. You can find that at the scale of media interest. I get worried when people say that this how mao is enhanced and that people are interested, it does perform self doubt as many people suggest, but it is something that all associate with it. X im so interested to talk to you, and i think she is a months she is amongst the crowds, and he said. Anisa. He was presented with a young change maker award, how was that . Lifechanging. To be presented with such a big award, but the king giving it to me it was completely severe surreal, and i just cried the whole time, because sure, how did i manage to get this, why am i being recognized, i just it was completely crazy. And you met him again. And he remembered you . Are you surprised . In january of 2020 i identified i was in a bad place, and i joined a program to learn confidence and learn to be yourself and learn about resilience, and new growing up as a young kid i suffered with social anxiety disorder and at a point i wasnt leaving my room and i wasnt able to have friends or hobbies i had no life and i was stuck in my room 24 7. They gave me the realization that i can do anything i just need to push myself a little. I need to push myself to just be me, really, and let how are you now . Im doing a lot of events. I get to meet people. And im just going. For someone from someone who couldnt leave their room, to now being on the telly. Im amazed. Thank you. Im delighted to be joined by deborah, what did you think of all that . I was a little worried this morning because it was raining. Its made it a little bit more british. Were good at weather. The last coordination it was unseasonably cold and wet and we had historic wonderful rain. Im taking this as a good omen. I think you are right to do so, it turned out rather well in 1953. And i think its been a wonderful spectacle and a wonderful day, the moment i was watching in the car on the way up, and the moment where he says god save the king out loud. I had a moment. Did you . I literally welled out, out of the blue. And it was incredible. Its interesting to still feel this way i find that fascinating. We were talking about it being an ancient tradition but still it resonates so strongly in the pomp and ceremony and all of the armed forces, and everyone is the three cheers you spoke about earlier, but i find it just really emotional. I loved it. Quite legitimatel it wonty resonate with everyone, but if you do resonate with it, there is something lovely about the nation coming together, and what a joyous moment to celebrate. It collects and may be at a time when we have Less Community because people are listening to their music, their watching their television, everything is separate, a community where we can all come together and feel something, its good. On monday one thing i wanted to talk to you about was about the coronation house, the king is interesting is interested in people coming and having coronation chicken and quiche. Its a kickstarter for it. So far we have 1200 businesses signed up. Its a huge organization and we expect 6000 people to volunteer in something. Theres a platform to go on and find what you want to do in your local area. And then there are type of projects you can be involved. Volunteering is good, it does a fantastic good its good for the sole and Mental Health and it gets you involved. I think there are portion of people that want to help but they dont know where to begin. They dont know how many hours they need to give up. And they dont know if they would feel terrible. There are bits of resistance in all of us. I think you are absolutely right and i think thats why businesses get involved. Is this it should say that you can take time off. Our business is going to say that. My businesses are. 1200 people have signed up to do it. And were showing people, want to this platform and you can choose what you want to get involved in because the things that you love might not be what i love and theres a good way to get fired up and on this platform youll find something that you care about. And at one point start volunteering and get involved and you feel that difference that you are making, and thats important to all of us. It means so much, thats the thing. You dont need to commit swaths of time to this. But it means so much by doing a little bit you give so much. Thats the most important thing, and with all of these things its just Getting Started and you end up building on yourself anyway. And when you are such requests must come in all the time how do you choose where to get involved . Im happy to do anything really, im like that. Its time. If i can do it im happy to do it, but that is my attitude. A lot of people are specific about various charities that they want to be involved in which is great. But i think i just try to do what i can, if i do something and it helps that means everything. You know how many people are watching. My granny would say i like to spread myself out why shouldnt you. Wise words. Next you talked about partnership, and one of the things that we know about the king and queen, they do a lot of things together. The chemistry is interesting. It is a wonderful relationship to watch, they are soulmates they are interested in hr there and what each other are interested in, and it is, i think its they are a wonderful couple i find it quite romantic and a little bit throwback. But i think its a lovely couple can you say that about the king and queen. I think theyre lovely couple. I think they are, and if ever two people were made for each other. Its at those two. Thank you for telling us and its lovely that you can give up some of your time on this coronation day. We can take a look at the crowds moving down the mountains. There they come from what we would imagine not just the sight of the mouth, but where they have been watching the parade, watching where the royals go by, but also big parts of london. Hyde park there has been huge screens showing all of the days proceedings, and much of what we saw in the abbey, and the unbridled joy, wherever you got that suit it was money well spent. Looking magnificent and enjoying his moment. There we see the huge Police Operation that has allowed all of these, tens of thousands of people i expect, to enjoy safely without any incident. She will show her children and say i was there. The scene is remarkable, but i think the rain has truly stop now and maybe the ghouls are starting to dry out. In a matter of 15 minutes or so we should have the royal family the king and queen appearing on the balcony, with other members of the working family. And they will enjoy a flyby. They have been planning a seven minute flight path but because of the low clouds its more likely to see of flight path of two or three minutes. Its going to be the Royal Air Force acrobat to look forward to, theres certainly a lot to look forward today, and joining me now is the expert i first such things is the english fashion exacts a reason. Or should i say British Fashion accessories. Anya, its been a feast for the senses. In terms of looking at what caught your eye, new its going to be the queen consort. Her story was moving actually. This was a bristol designed gown and it very much was a gown. Would you say there are rules to be followed when you are making a gown for something as significant as this. It is a historical gown. It was a moment in history so it needs to be comfortable, and needs to be respectful and it needs to be a nod to all the tradition it has lovely embroidery on it which represents the coronation, which is a very special thing and one really better of than a trusted person to make the gown. What did it take for someone who was a cotillion to make something that could work throughout the day. And not make sure that youre not dressed up, what is it taken skill to make a gown like that. I think that comfort matters. And all of those obvious things especially in the weather, i think when you look at someone who you know and you can see yourself its important on the day. She was a real inspiration having been brought up in the home and having come from Humble Beginnings it was a really interesting story as well. She has had a long and storied career but this certainly must be the day that she feels that she reached the top. India, what did you make of the beautiful stuff we saw today particularly in the abbey . I found it reassuring because theres a lot of discussion about what we are going to lose, the pageantry, and that they would not wear those robes. But i dont think we missed that at all. Not only was that historic sword clutched to her chest, but her head pieced, i read a hat by her for the queen funeral, again its nice to see these british brands come out. And the duchess of edinburgh was wearing something made by a friend, im not seeing long again. In the queens coronation everyone was in long, it was interesting to see the princess of wales and the justice of britain long. People were in waistbands and trainers, to what we saw today is another way of being. People are more generally not required to get this dressed up. Did he think do you think these events portray it as nice to sometimes make the effort . And it brings back minding your ps and qs around the majesty. I think that it is absolutely right, she is so beautifully dressed, it is a high street grand that we can all understand, and the balance that were seen now, yet, she looks absolutely exceptional. Lets talk for a moment about the princess of because we saw the other immediate members of the royal female family, where underneath it she was wearing an Alexander Mcqueen gown. Im wondering i would like a good look at it. And interest owing her daughter charlotte, was wearing precisely the same thing as mom, but a childs version. It was rather charming. Craftsmanship is rather important. I think at the heart of British Fashion week cant forget the craftsmen they are the heroes, the embroidery is amazing, and its really special work, it takes many hands and many days. A hat is usually a nightmare for us. If we have to go somewhere and wear a hat. Its usually a nightmare. The princess of wales was wearing a hat it wasnt entirely inappropriate. What was it . Her business was funded by the princes trust. I think it was a nod to the new start of the monarchy, and it was respect of the new king, and a risk requested note heroes and they have a passion of nature and sustainable environment. So i think its definitely a nod to him. I thought it was so appropriate. There was a time when the king and queen got into that carriage, we wondered if they would lose the crown, but they did it really atlee. Talking about creasing, my own experience coming down the mound with the princess dianas wedding train. When you were a bridesmaid. X you can practice so much but when she got into that coach, nobody anticipated how much material there would be. When she got out the other end it was a nightmare. You have to anticipate the creases. Youre both very strict and i like it. So may rules. Thank you so much for your expert analysis. Lets find out how spirits are on the mount. I am still here. The rain stopped about five minutes ago i can confirm that it is very much raining here on the mall. The crowds are trickling down now. Can you imagine what its like at the front. Im joined now by a royal miller of delia a royal memorabilia collector. And you traveled here from australia . We did. I had to weigh it out but i think it was worth the travel. What did you think . It was amazing. It was out of this world. I dont know how to describe it its the best thing ive done in my life. You have it forever now. Its the wonderful thing about experience. How many pieces do have . Where than 10,000 now. I gave up counting. Where do you keep it all . In the house, we live in a museum. I should probably be locked up somewhere its not normal. What are some of your favorite pieces, Queen Elizabeth pieces, and lovely pieces from diana, lovely pieces from her, really all Queen Victoria, things going back to george the third. I cant pick a favorite. There are too many. How much shopping have you done since you got here . Ive sent three boxes home. In the palace will send a big box as well. How much did you spend . Too much. You can tell me off camera and we wont mention it. Because you traveled all this way have something for you. Nobody else can buy this in the shop. Just for you. Another piece of memorabilia. Thank you so much. Its been a wonderful day thank you for having us. Im keep that. Thanks. As we await the king and queen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, im joined now for a sidebar. Its not an ideal day is it . Tell us the complications of trying to stage something that as as important to peoples safety or spectacle on a day like today . The original aspiration was to have 68 aircraft, a mixture of world were to air coughed aircraft all flying in different directions, and it is complex and takes a lot of planning. It also means that you need to make sure you get all the aircraft together in a safe place, which was over the north sea. The plan had been for the aircraft to join up into different formations as we flowed in from the north sea. And unfortunately, today that is against us. So weve had to take a very difficult decision to remove some of the aircraft from the flight path, but we have put helicopters and red aeros but we havent been able to do as much as we would like because of the need to say safe. X thats important for everyone and i think everyone appreciates that given how unpredictable the weather is that we are going to be able to see a flight path at all. We are looking forward to it we do like a flight path. These things happen. If you look back to the queens diamond jubilee. We had to cancel a flight path over the river because of the weather. What i can hear now is the most massive chair behind me. Theres the reason. We have King Charles Iii and Queen Camilla. They are waving for thousands of people who have braved the rain and are here to witness we see the pages. They are having a moment that will stay with them for the rest of their life and also Queen Camilla is joined by two ladies in attendance waved to the crowd and the crowd waves back Robert Hartman i believe. What are they that charles made his first balcony appearance at two years old. At two years old, and they didnt wait until two or three. But this is the rest of the family joining now. The working family. They are still taking regular engagements with the children. But this is the first time hes led to the family out as king. He was tiny and he can just about remember the coronation but he is bleeding today. He does look relaxed. And when you say working members, you dont just mean the children, the pages, and the others, take people through the working members of the royal family. They are the ones the prince and princess of wales there. The queen and her pages, this is in a way recognizing those who daytoday job is supporting the monarchy. They are camilla. The prince of wales and Princess Anne a and of course, its nice to see that prince alexander and prince of kent still play roil units if you like. They may not make headlines. But the king feels a debt of gratitude to them. And what we havent got here is what we used to see at the birthday parade. The day is about the monarchy rather than about me and myself. At such a special day you want to of a thank you. You want to go out and behave well. Its also very interesting to see. There you are. Very popular people. Something altogether different today. And we see the helicopters coming in. Through the rain. This is the first of five formations of helicopters. They will have in the hour. The first was a formation of three. Training helicopters from the number one flying school. The second helicopter, the pilot is one of prince williams flying instructors. Also interesting that the helicopters they have slightly different laws when it comes to how close they can get to the weather because of the speed. Is not too dangerous . Its right on the edge. Thats why they could not get the other aircraft but within limits for the helicopters and red arrows. They are coming right overhead over the palace. Everybody looks up. Go ahead. The top of the screen, the army formation. They are coming over now. The navy, then the army than the Royal Marines and air force. They know what its like to be a pilot. Its interesting. He was a good wessex helicopter pilot. He knows what is going through their minds, prince of wales flew many helicopters. Everybody else is tilting their heads apart from the king and queen. They got something to be mindful of, it is eyes up for them. Occupational hazard when you are wearing the crown. As the queen would say, youve got to read your speech looking straight ahead. The red arrows can work in greater weather limits in the other aircraft that were unable to join us. We get a chance to see the iconic red arrows. Currently in their 59th season. Are they all over the world . They do go all over the world. This is the moment. [crowd cheering] that was a wonderful moment, iconic moment. It would have been a great shame if the weather had stopped what puts a seal on the day, i think. [indiscernible] absolutely. The armed forces. In we go. A day that could not have gone more to plan apart from the weather. It is a coronation. The king said yesterday it is a blessing. And look, he is delighted by it. It is so important. [indiscernible] he will never come back on the balcony wearing all of that again. Probably we will see him next month for the birthday parade, a more traditional balcony moment. Its very much the punctuation marks of National Life set by these moments. King charles standing with Queen Camilla, a day many people believed we would never see. Absolutely, a great moment for her, now absolutely the queen. Thats what she will be named from now on. I think at the start of the reign i think some people thought it would be a caretaker reign, he is the oldest monarch weve ever crowned, 75. But today he has stamped his mark on it. It wont be one of the longest reigns but it will have personality. Weve seen that with some small things hes done. Things are changing in that palace. Its nice to see the balcony back in action. They had to put floorboards down today to get everybody out there. Things are changing incrementally. Its not an overnight thing but he has his own ideas for this institution that we celebrate today. And as you watched the military earlier mother royal salute, did you see that . I thought that was maybe one of the highlights of the day. Absolutely and it fills you up as someone serving in the military, the opportunity to see your monarch involved in something of such national importance, it is the sort of day people will never forget. We are getting an encore. It must be coronation day. [indiscernible] the king very relaxed. Its a huge responsibility to have a successful coronation not only for the people in the streets, but in terms of logistics. The amount of planning and pressure is enormous. It is. I likened it to a wedding day, its if you like the way the monarchy marries the people. Weve seen pictures of what goes on in the palace. I would love to see the photographs. In 1953, 1 of the maids of honor had to stop the king, age four, from running off with the crown. Definitely up to something. Watch those robes. And that site, youre not going to see that again. Coronation day is the only day that happens. Its why this was so unique. You have to be in your 80s or 90s to have seen this sort of thing with your own eyes before. Lets talk a little bit about continuity. Surely that might be one of the reasons people have trudged out on maybe not the best today and the rain, to be part of it all and put down put on union jack hats and have a few beers. It is tradition, a lot of it. Tradition and continuity. One of the new additions, not with the archbishop of canterbury, but a 14yearold boy effectively saying to the king, why are you here, what are you doing here . He said i am here to serve. I think that was such an important preface if you like to the whole thing. Throughout this immense grandeur and tradition, weve seen this kind of humility all day. Constitutionally, religious leaders explaining where the king belongs in the National Landscape if you like. Yes, he is the head of state and the king but he is there to serve us too. Lets go back and find out who anita is talking to. I think ive had the best seat in the house all day on the iconic red rose. Numerous processions, so money weddings, funerals and after 70 years, a coronation. Its been about the people down here. Are you having a good time . [cheering] we have seen all of the hats, all of the outfits and people have traveled from all over the world to be here. Its not just about the crowds here, its about the volunteers as well, the armed forces, the ambulance, the stewards who have made this whole day run like clockwork. The biggest privilege everyone here, including myself, have, is we can all say we were here to witness the coronation. [cheering] its been a great day from the mount. Thank you, anita. We see the brollies are up. We cannot damage the spirit but it is damp. We have seen the kind king and queen on the balcony at Buckingham Palace. It is not a day we will see again. For all of those people that chose to be part of it, quite the scene indeed. In a way, it is unfair of me to ask you to analyze because i suppose the thing about history is we have to see it in a greater context, but that is what you are here for so thats what i will ask you to do. When you were looking at those scenes and you saw the queen and king come out, what were your thoughts . In the 20th century there were five coronations, an average of every 20 years. We havent seen one since 1953. That reanimation of a tradition thats been dormant. To actually see it is historic. Today weve been reminded of the deep religious history of the country, theres been echoes of the 17th century and the medieval age and the sacraments of the coronation. That sense of continuity and tradition is as a historian fascinating. On that level it is a remarkable thing to witness. Now it is done and a new reign formally begins. Lots of questions about the monarchy are up for discussion as they always are. Lets have a discussion. Most of the people in the sense, are you religious, most people in britain say they are not churchgoers anymore, they are not christian. We have lots of different faiths , we seldom represented today. When you look at a day like today, do you think its about being a celtic . I think tradition is a more useful word. I think what you saw was an effort to show the representation of britain, which is very different today from 1953. Its very difficult with a 1000yearold ceremony. You can have diversity of faith, but the lack of faith, which is a big factor in modern britain, its much harder to build into the ceremony. Theres only so far you can modernize a 1000yearold ceremony before it stops being that ceremony. We heard today defender of the faith. There was a time in the early 1990s, then Prince Charles put forward that in his coronation he would be defender of faith. That was rolled back and i think over time maybe he realized as somebody who is head of the church of england, that was not necessarily the most appropriate approach. Know, but i think it was an aspiration when he said it in 1994. It was how he viewed the role. The late queen articulated that herself in 2012. She made a speech to faith leaders at the palace and she talked about how the monarch had a duty to protect and the same applies now. I think that both oath, your role is to help people worship freely in the king said i will. It was sort of there, not explicit but there, the role of a modern monarch. Hes there to protect the rights of everybody of any faith or none. Do you think in terms of a modern monarchy and the house of winds are windsor has survived because its good at changing, being what is acceptable. Do you think the new king gets it . To think he has a sense of how to propel the monarchy forward and change things . I think if we analyze what he said when he was prince of wales, we need to understand he was prince of wales. As king, he understands the limits of the role and he was in a different role previously. You cant modernize a monarchy because its a monarchy, and that principle many people will not become her with. But the majority of our fellow citizens are comfortable with this being the way we choose ahead of state. They revel in certain ceremonies and traditions. For people here this is a huge event in their lives that they care deeply about. The challenge is to reach out to the people who are not obsessed with history and tradition like myself, who are not here because they love the monarchy. A lot of people feel neutral about the monarchy. Not that they are opposed to it or desperate to become a republic but they dont feel much. Thats potentially an opportunity for the new king to find a way of being a monarch, and a monarchy for the future. I think that is right. The greatest threat to a modern monarchy will not be storming the palace, it is irrelevance. Indifference and than irrelevance, when people wake up and say why are you here . You have to keep reinventing, youve got to keep at it. Is not a brand of toothpaste, you cant relaunch it. What the monarchy does, it is out there every day. I was in germany with the king the other day we saw how he went down there. He addressed the German Parliament in german and that made an impact. I think it does help this country punch above its weight. Most people are happy with this constitutional arrangement. It might not make sense but it is the one we have and we are very proud of it. But its got to earn its keep and im quite sure he knows that. The complacency is something you will not see. The day after his mother died, he was right on it, addressing the nation. We didnt hear from elizabeth the second, she did not address the people for 10 months after she became queen. He was doing it right away, touring the country. He is a king in a hurry. This is not a caretaker reign. His wife has said the thing about him is he wants to save the world. He is somebody that is propelled by the need to make change. On the one hand that is admirable, on the other he has given himself quite a job. The world need saving, no question. I like to think you will find ways of modernizing the role and reaching out to people. I think it is a challenge and we need to recognize that one of the great strengths they have as many people look at our politics and they think maybe this is a more balanced way of representing a wider crosssection of the population. Weve had a year with three prime ministers and we not had the best case for an alternative. So we hope there are ways of modernizing and he is capable of finding them. Is a very good point, there was a rather good tweet in that extraordinary week, somebody said there is a pint of milk in my fridge that has seen to prime ministers and two monarchs and its still going strong. There wasnt any unrest or disorder and theres something to be said for that stability and continuity. Traveling with the royal family, they represent continuity, particularly in countries with a lot of turmoil, and they look at what that represents. They are quite envious. One might decry the current state of politics here or anywhere in the world given the state many places are in. Having a monarchy could be something that floats above it, and people could respect that we have it, that it feels solid and it doesnt feel like it is groping around in the gutter for votes. When politicians have great turmoil, in a Hung Parliament or whatever it might be, at least the people know that they dont owe their allegiance to who is in number 10, they owe their allegiance to a different entity not going anywhere. Its not something we think about every day but it is there. It is part of that sense of continuity and stability we may take for granted. We may only register it subconsciously but at least we feel everything will work ok. One of the most interesting legacies of the kings time as prince of wales is the princes trust, still ongoing. I touched on this a little earlier today. A Million People so far it has helped and it was set up i believe when the prince was in his midtolate 20s. Yes, he used the contents of his world navy pension to get it going. Set up to help not only people who want to start their own businesses, people that want to get back into education, to reengage with skills. Its interesting he chose something, as somebody would consider to be the personification of the establishment, to reach out to people who are disenfranchised. Those who feel on the outside. What do you make of that . I think it shows an astuteness that hopefully we will see more of. Monarchs have often realized one of the ways of legitimizing their role of centering themselves in our conversation is to be aware of inequality and the disadvantage many people are born into. I think its a natural response. Queen victoria raised a lot of money for people during the irish famine. Monarchs are aware of the cost of coronation. This idea of being aware of social issues is not a new phenomenon. Interesting. And yes, a coronation in the middle of a costofliving crisis which day today for a lot of british people is a real thing. Do you think the coronation we saw today managed a balancing act of giving something splendid that the signed time same time not being gratuitous . Its a very fine line. Some people will be looking at this today and saying what a complete waste of money. But you stand back from it and think, it goes to the heart of what we are as a country. We have huge events, whether it is cup finals or parades. We host many big things. It goes to the heart of what we are about. Weve got to do it properly. In 1953, we were on rations and people could not buy meat. And another time there was a debate, should we having this big event postwar . And many people said we should, because this matters. We need to do it properly, theres nothing worse than a scaleddown coronation. Churchill said you cant have a coronation with bailiffs in the house and he wanted to do it properly. I feel we struck the right balance. It could have been bigger, we could have filled the abbey with 8000 seats instead of 2000. We could have had bells and whistles but i think they called it right. Thank you to you both for your insights, knowledge and historical references. Ive learned a lot and it has been wonderful to share the day with you. Thank you. There we are. Ive never seen anything quite like it and i imagine neither have you. What a day. History unfolding in front of our eyes. The man born in that palace behind me more than seven decades ago today finally meeting his destiny and stepping onto a balcony crowned king. We saw there was a warm smile. By his side, his queen and heirs. A roar of approval from the crowd seemed to tell us something about the joy the coronation day has brought to so many pit they will tell their families in the decades to come i was there. The arcane sermon in the abbey, the sermon, the priceless jewels and magnificent carriages were dazzling. A reminder that maybe however much the world changes, tradition and ritual and ceremony still play an essential part in bringing us together in a spirit of celebration and community. The king pledged in the presence of a modern congregation. War veterans and even some superstars. All witness to the beginning of a new era for britain and the commonwealth. Amid that sea of happy places, many millions around the country and the world will have doubtless tuned in to see the spectacle, including the remarkable parade where our military did what it does so well, building the occasion with pomp and pageantry. We have seen the country unified and salvation on a day fit for a king. They give for joining us and for now, goodbye. Your majesty, the children of the kingdom is yours. We welcome you in the name of the king of kings. This is the rule of law. These are the articles. Will you cause no injustice to be executed . I will. God save the king. God save the king. I pledge to you. A healthy democracy doesnt just look like this. It looks like this
