[cheering] [applause] and if necessary, i will work to pass a constitutional amendment to undo the Supreme Courts decision in citizens united. [cheering] [applause] and we democrats believe that, no matter you are, with what look like, what a few practice, or who you love, america has a place for you. And you should have the same opportunity as everyone else to live up to your potential. Agenda. Ve a great we know what it means to be a democrat. We will fight that against those who will do, say, and spend whatever it takes to turn our country in a very different direction. Who watch the Republican Debate the other night . Uttons for punishment, you. 15 candidates. Five hours. Not a single fighter for the middle class. And the Fact Checkers are having a field day with their answers. Positions are not just factually inaccurate, they are deeply out of touch and out of date. Not one of them offer a credible plan to make college more affordable or combat climate change. Did you hear anything about family leave or preschool . No. Ms. Clinton are what about putting an end to the nonviolence that plagues our communities every single day and what about putting an end to violence of that plagues our communities every single day. Not one of them is willing to say loudly and clearly black lives matter. [cheering] [applause] and of course, no solutions for skyrocketing Prescription Drug costs. No ideas about how to raise income. No ideas at all, when you stop to think about it. But there was one statement i had to agree with. Yeah. Hard to believe, right . As Lindsey Graham said, hillary mile longs a list a to help the middle class. [laughter] [cheering] [applause] that. Ight about absolutely right about that. I do. It was the most honest ring anyone said that night. And i am going to keep adding to that list, keep writing for the thate class, keep showing the middle class has a voice. Do not be the way he handled the question about president obama were shocking but not surprising. Trafficking in president and prejudice and paranoia this entire campaign. Tell you, if you look at the policies of the other republican candidates, they are just trmump without the pizzazz or the hair. He says hateful things about immigrants they do not support a real path to citizenship. We need comprehensive reform, not demagoguery and deportation. [cheering] [applause] and, we have heard mr. Trump insult and demean women. By the way, donald, when you say youd cherish women, that really does not make it any better. Stop cherishing women and start respecting women . [cheering] [applause] listen closely. He is not the only one. Although the republican candidates want to defund planned parenthood. Many are willing to shut down matterernment for it, no the consequences for our country. We are talking about a Womans Health service that provides half a million Breast Cancer exams every year. That is what they want to stop. Here in new hampshire, you know about this. Last month, your executive council cut off funding to planned parenthood in the state. On they, three Men Executive Council voted to deny women access to health care across new hampshire. I would like them, along with the republican candidates to meet the moms who caught her cancer early thanks to a screening. Or the teenager who avoided an unintended pregnancy because she had access to birth control. Or the survivor of Sexual Assault who got emergency contraception. [cheering] [applause] you know, these extremist views may be right for the republican primary, but they are dead wrong for america. I know that when i talk like this, some of the republicans say i am playing the gender card. Equal payalling for and paid leave and Womens Health is playing the gender card, deal me in. [cheering] [applause] deal me in deal me in hillary i am going to keep fighting. I will fight until every woman has the rights, the opportunities, and the respect she deserves until every little girl in america knows without a doubt she can grow up to be anything she wants. Even president of the United States. [cheering] [applause] friends, lets go out and wage this campaign and elect democrats at every level. Lets take back school boards. Lets take that be legislatures. Lets take back every position all the way to the white house. Because if this election is about americas future, not americas fear, democrats will win. [cheering] [applause] hear mr. Trump saying he wants to make America Great again, respond america is great, we just have to make it work for all of the people in our country again. So, i think we are going to have a great campaign. It is going to be fun. Because what makes the other folks uncomfortable is what makes america what we are today. Our diversity, our ingenuity, our innovation. The signs of american dynamism. Our immigrant culture. All we do to build a country where everybody has a place. Limits one are no what we can achieve when we put our, and interests in front of self interests and common sense in front of nonsense. I am fighting or that america. I am fighting for all americans, not just some. Struggling, the striving, and the successful. I am running for everyone who has been knocked down but refused to be knocked out. I amhting for you to fighting for you, democrats. Lets go out and make america the future. [cheering] [applause] [indiscernible] hillary, we love you. Our guests are melanie campell, the president and ceo of the theonal coalition also convener of the black womens roundtable. Im also joined by vanessa luca. Start with the poll that your organizations have worked together on. Can you start with the poll, what were you trying to find out . Sureie we wanted to make to see what black women one from the next president , and not make assumptions about what you think. Really have an opportunity to find out from plaque women what they want in the next president. Also our communities and families. You serve as editor in chief what was the cooperation and role . Vanessa we open the poll to our social media. We received an enthusiastic response right away. Which proves to us that we are in the election process, that we are definitely planning on voting and registered to vote, and that we have a responsibility to vote. Nsibility to vote. I believe 64 of the people who participated said they really feel strongly it is our responsibility to vote. Host when you took a look at the findings you saw the top three things that black women were looking at as we go into 2016 Affordable Health care, living wage jobs, and college afford ability. Talk about those kind of those categories. The reality is that africanamericans live in the south. A lot of us live in the south. You donttates have governors who embraced the afford all caps the Affordable Care act. Medicaidality is, expansion has not taken place in a lot of these places. ,eople who need affordability they dont have the access to health care. Health care is one of the number one drivers of act of impacting your economic situation. So for black women, who are primarily heads of household, that is a major impact. That is one of the reasons that we saw that being number one. Host Vanessa Deluca and vanessa , living wage jobs are a priority. Was that a surprise . Guest not really. Many of our audience are heads of household. Making a living wage and being able to bring home money that can push their family forward and take care of their family take care of your needs, your Health Concerns that is of critical importance. This whole idea of raising the minimum wage is very much of interest to our audience. They see that it directly impacts how they are going to be able to set the future for their s. Milies ra host how do you think the administration has done on that issue . Guest i think they have done a lot to look at, before you even get to the living wage, looking , having access to great Public Education. That is something that is really key. That sets the stage for what kind of wages were going to be able to earn going forward. I believe that their focus on opening those gates so there is more access for everyone thatcially our community is a key piece. Host and if you want to pose questions, here is how you can give us a call. Democrats, 202 7488000. Republicans, 202 7488001. Independence, 202 7488002. You brought up the issue of medicaid, but we now have an Affordable Care act. Was it still surprising that even if we have that in place that Affordable Care what a big issue . Actt the Affordable Care did a lot of things but it did not solve all the problems of having access to Affordable Health care. Is there are re, you have the states not affecting accepting the opportunity to provide access to Affordable Care, which provides you with a Affordable Health insurance. That is what we are getting down to. March. N your show in we looked at the issues from our report. In there we talked about health care and the reality is that for black women, you have states where we dont rank very high when it comes to access to Affordable Care. There is a direct correlation between that report and the report where you show that we are not doing well. It was definitely a trend that says ok, we understand that. When you talk about economic situations, the issue of Health Insurance or health care, or having a problem where you may end up with Health Issues that could impact your bottom line essence, ience of and we were so pleased and sinker so much for partnering we were able to get to a serious audience of black women who are either registered ifvote or plan to register they are a millennial just coming into the process. Voters. Alking to they have a good understanding. President obama has stated, there is more work to be done. But a lot has been done. I dont have the numbers in my head, but millions of people have registered. Who hadabout a brother not been able to get any health care for as long as i could remember, and he has been able to have health care over the last two years because of the Affordable Care act. My big brother called me and told me this. It was like the last day. He has been able to do that two years in a row so that he could have a better quality of life and go to a doctor of choice as opposed to a clinic. Far as those potential voters are concerned, for those responding to the poll, 78 identified as democrat , as representing the interests of black women. Felt republicans are libertarians represented their interest. Can you expand on that . Guest what those numbers mean is that there is no one party that has the black womens vote locked in. That is an opportunity for the candidates to truly speak to these issues that we brought up in our poll. Have theo grateful to opportunity to bring light to these issues. Notice and some of these debates, and number of these issues have not really been spoken about. It will be interesting to see as the Campaign Wraps up, how well the candidates speak to these issues. If they want black womens votes they are going to have to speak to a lot of those, and hopefully they will space to all of it. Was there any indication that they may not vote because there is not a black person . Guest 98 of people who participated in the poll said they were either registered or planned to register. Said, our Community Feels that the opportunity to vote is a responsibility. You think about, this is the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights act. We are not taking that for granted. There have been so many attacks on Voting Rights. We are not taking the power for granted. We want to encourage black women to make sure that we leverage this power that we have and use it to push for the things that are going to make our community stronger. Untilour guests with us 9 10 to talk about these issues for black women as they go forward in 25th 2016. Our first call, brenda, in texas. Caller thanks for taking my call. , ladies, and i really hate to post this question but i need an answer. Lets qualify a couple of things. I am retired from a Major Corporation at a time when they paid well and there were 401 k s and all of that. I am not hurting. Fromughter graduated baylor university. She had a postgraduate degree as well. Before 30 she was making six digits. We are not hurting and my family. Family, history on my my older sisters played a big not in immigration immigration, but the breaking of the segregation, an Independent School district here in houston. We are not Clarence Thomas and neither are we out of west. , getting to my point, my concern is illegal immigration, and what impact it andaving on our children the black community. In texas you can imagine how inundated we are with the when theyand i think are in a management position, the hispanic people, they. Romote and they hire their own they dont embrace us. A sister is a judge and she was running for a judgeship here in texas back in 2014. I worked the campaign. I think it was the Hispanic Chamber of commerce , they did not support not one black candidate that was running for judgeship. They threw their support behind the white republicans. I want us to really take a look at this. I know what the bottom line of this thing was, but they dont have a vote if they are illegal. Host you put a lot out there, we will let our guest respond. Guest first of all, the issue of undocumented immigration is something for the black community that really, we are building a Stronger Alliance between the africanamerican and latino communities to find ways to work closer together around issues. We are stronger together and being divided. Of the things is that Immigration Reform is one of those things that was only 8 . So when you talk about how we can come together so we can you talk about the disparities with africanamerican communities, the secondmost impacted are the latino communities, people of color. We need to talk about the issues we know we are facing. We have Voting Rights that are under attack. We work in coalition with our latino brothers and sisters around these issues, so that where we may have some issues of concern we work through those things. One thing that is true, if you dont know someone, you go with who you know. More africanre americans, white folks, they tend to hire white folks. We have to get to know our communities so that we can be stronger, it is at the end of the day we all want quality of life. Ms. Deluca, do you want to add anything . Guest when we talk about Immigration Reform we talk about undocumented communities, the conversation tends to reflect the right. But we know there is a much broader audience, a much broader segment of people who fit into that. Maybe the conversation needs to begin with, how do we brought in those definitions so that we are wrapping our arms around everyone who falls into that category. Brett from sanford, North Carolina. Democrats line. You are next. Taking myank you for call. I just wanted to make a comment. I was watching a survey or whatever they call, the number one voting group for blacks here in the country, black women voters came out number one. I thought that was extremely impressive, and i just wanted to we see it, and i really appreciated. Thank you. Guest thank you so much for pointing that out, as you are absolutely right. In the last two president ial campaigns black women led the voter turnout. We just want to ensure in the 26 election that that will continue and even grow, especially a month millennial. We found that millennials in particular are very interested around College Affordability, for obvious reasons. Anyone who is going to be addressing that particular issue somenk is going to have great ways into appealing to millennials. Guest did he say North Carolina . We want to make sure we are working with folks down in north , and that one of the reasons we wanted to do this poll early was that we needed to this is not about seeing who becomes the nominees, but really finding a good way to share this information with candidates and being able to really push that. We hope that in North Carolina you are able to utilize this information to make sure that black women and black man and the whole Community Comes out. North carolina is an exciting state. Many lack so black people and universities. Make sure you turn out that vote. Leroy, here is leeway for michigan. An independent. Caller thank you for taking my call. Emphasis on of science, mathematics, education in the black community. Immigration you did mention. Community, spanish especially the Arabic Community here in michigan, you black people as their competitors. They dont believe the they dont do these people as people to come into coalition with. Black men are at the bottom of the economic totem pole, especially employment. Since black women have this very chunk, you barely rarely see them give us a hand up. It is mostly the white women who even mention that black men are on the bottom. Guest one of the things that we did this is as my wearer of two hats from the National Coalition of black civic participation, we had a black mans coalition. I worked with reverend tony lee and some other brothers to develop a black man day on capitol hill. We see that black men have to be able to come together to address those issues. We are looking at young black men and boys from across the country walk the halls of congress to get trained on advocacy and being able to go and walk the halls of congress and meet with republicans and democrats to talk about those issues. Some of those issues that they addressed that were impacting black man, of course include criminal Justice Reform and a good quality Public Education. I was notman blessed with children, but i have got nieces and nephews. The reality is for black women, we have to be leading our own issues. For black men, the same. In our organization i dont think we have that issue. I know people who are working tound social justice, we try work in our individual capacities as women, but also we come together in a way as a community so that we can impact all of us. That is how we are trying to address issues that impact black people. Host and since the viewer mentioned education, in their poll 38 of respondents say College Affordability was a concern, right after that, quality Public Education. Guest having access to quality Public Education for many in our community, Public Education is what is most available to us. Having the opportunity to have a community where your school down the street has the best teachers, has great training, has some of the things the caller talked about with stem, having access to ap courses. That is something that is not always made available in our community. That came out in the poll. Host walter up next, baltimore, maryland. Independent line. Caller good morning. Ladies, i am truly an independent and i love you guys and thank you for your organizations. But my question and my focus this morning would just be that there are issues that are corrupted by the media and the right wing, and in particular the black lives Matter Movement. It is now being redirected as a big joke. But i beg your indulgence in trying to reach out to that. As abrother setting brother said earlier, the core issue begins at home. We have got to participate. Doggone the registration, participation is most important. I beg you to speak to the black lives Matter Movement this and also the criminal denial of health care and the criminal denial of justice by these republicans,. , from congress to their state legislators. It is criminal the way these guys are denying the right to vote, health care, justice. Please if you cant speak to that. I will be trying to find you on the internet. If you saw our february issue, or the first time in our essence didy, not have a person on the cover. He had simply the words, black lives matter. We discussed all aspects of this conversation, including members of the movement. Specifically the three women of color who created that , lack lives matter. We invited them to talk about some of the things that need to be addressed, particularly in criminal Justice Reform, police reform. Looking at issues of coming together and supporting each other. Addressing some of the tensions that are between some of the Old School Civil Rights leaders and some of the new school. All of these things that we have been talking about throughout the year and we will continue to do so. We firmly believe that this is a Pivotal Moment in our history, and it would not we would not be doing our do till if we were not to cover it. Us, being able to work intergenerational he intergenerational he , having theionally opportunity for folks to support you in your leadership is incredible. Each generation has what i call their movement, movement moments. They grab that. Ist makes the movements day being able to connect the protest and resistance to policy and politics. Had several of those younger asders who were at the table we continue to dig deep on this ,urvey, from black lives matter from New York Justice league, and others. Networks, all the folks who were really doing the work on the ground, but also across the hall of congress and in the states where it matters. Think that this generation is here to stay when it comes to fighting injustice, for civil rights, social justice. From issues that we saw millennialist, college of portability being number one, quality education number two, criminal justice and policing, and the right to reproductive justice issues were critical. Those are also, as the caller , issues that are under attack. Votingrights is at rights is about access to our democracy and being able to have the ability as a woman to control your own body. I cannot get into pointing , but the reality is there are some partisan facts about what is happening and who is attacking around Voting Rights. Congress has yet to call for a hearing on dealing with Voting Rights reform, the Voting Rights advancement act. We have had the 50th anniversary of selma, of bloody sunday, this year. Vote and howthe that impacts us to be able to deal with any of these issues. To make that decision . Us this guess joining morning. Melanie campbell of the National Coalition of black civic participation. Of essencesa deluca magazine, editor in chief. Our next caller from indianapolis, hi. Caller number one, i think black people really need to work with their young black boys to let them know that the prison institutions are making money off of them. The people that own these private jails, they are getting money from our young, poor, black boys to send their children to the best colleges, to live in the best homes. They are getting rich off of them. I think is more young black boys would understand that these people are getting rich off of them, they would stop going to jail, getting these bracelets on the ankles that they have to pay for. In the state of indiana, indiana loves to send black boys to prison, and never let them out. They constantly get money from them, constantly, constantly. , he in indiana, mike pence accepted medicaid, but most of the Health Care Programs are hsas. Who can afford hsa Insurance Coverage . You only have coverage in the amount of what you could pay for. Then, after that, you have to pay outofpocket. It is ridiculous. Host thank you very much. When it comes to issues of criminal Justice Reform, 37 of respondents said that is a top issue on the list. It is of critical importance to our community. When you see our young people having no opportunity to advance because they have a record, what we need to do is spend more time and put more energy and investment into education and job training, mentorship, all the things that can avoid us from having to spend that money on the back end. In fact, i went to screening of the hbovice documentary coming out where president obama visited the federal prison and sat down with the young men. That is something they talked a lot about. Had they had more education, more job training, more mentorship in the beginning of their life, they may not have ended up there. Michigan,t, republican line, john, you are on next. About im calling in this. , about sixnow why they didnt do nothing for us, but we will go to the polls for what . I cant say why you keep trying to separate yourself from other races, saying you are doing something that you are not doing. They are not doing nothing. You cant keep praying. If you lose it, i lose it. If you get it, i get it. Thank you. The election is here. We have candidates that we will have to choose. We have to get in there and make put people injust office, but engage and hold them accountable. That is what we are going to be doing. Vote turns the black out. We will have some they called the black vote alliance. Every election is the most important election. It will impact our communities for decades to come. That is what we will do. We want to make sure we are informed about where we stand on issues that matter, the impact our community. It is about quality of life. We tried to do our part. Host there was a recent piece in the letter magazine. The headline was, canada Republican Party maintain its hold on black voters . Guest i think that is actually on target. A candidate can take advantage of the issues that we talk about in our poll. Themselvessee galvanize a lot of the vote around supporting them. Heres the thing. A lot of times people dont ask our opinion. They just dont ask. It dont want to know. Any candidate that extends a hand, and that she shows that they are interested in some of the things that are important to us, that gets our attention. That definitely gets our attention. That is one of the ring reasons we felt it was so important to poll with a roundtable. We understand ourselves, we just need to make sure we leverage it. Host is there a republican candidate that resonates with your issues . Guest right now, i think the Republican Party is going through when needs to go through. You are not hearing the issues that we are talking about. One of the things that was high guess what, reducing taxes for lower and middle income people. Entrepreneurship was high. Opportunity was 12 . The reality of Economic Issues like that, we are not really hearing that. Right now, is more of a personality contest been substantive than substantive issues. We need to hear from these candidates, whether democrat or republican. One of the things we exit have. Oing on now we have a presence of questioner that we have sent to all of who we feel are viable candidates to ask them more deeply to give us what their lands are plans are. What they stand for and against. We are going to release the questionnaire results by november to share that in our community about where ended it stand on theidates issues. We seem to not be getting that in the debate yet. Host something adjusting that was found in the poll you did is 88 of the respondents said they would vote for president obama again in 2016 if he had the chance to run again. President obama was going to speak at the Congressional Black Caucus tonight. If you want more information on that, go to our website. Did you have a chance to present your findings likely to the white house or the Congressional Black Caucus . Weest we released it hosted a form. Probably tong this the current administration, congress, candidates, and the general public. It is a broad reach, and not necessarily at one group. Host one more call. This is billy from colorado. Caller good morning, ladies. Guest good morning. Caller i grew up in the mississippi delta. We were the poorest state and the union. My folks were sharecroppers. We were working from the time we were 78 years of age. Ive got a cold, im sorry. We would crawl in the pickup and work all summer. We wouldnt get paid nothing. We used to complain to our debt, we wanted money. He said, you dont pay for your food or your housing, secure getting paid. The reason we have so many poverty problems in the delta was white and black folks were not educated. Me and my brothers, three of us, all got college degrees. Orked summer jobs, we cannot spend the money. We had no student debt. All three boys got a college degree, one god masters. The problem in a lot of communities today, black, white, and everything, folks are not educating their kids. You cannot expect to get a good job with less than a ged. Bill cosby says that kids tend to be educated at the level of their participation. I have a black friend who lives a couple blocks from mcdonald. He has a highly motivated young boy who wants to get a job, he cant get a job. A lot of people when they think of illegals, they think of hispanics, but the asians are coming in here and they tend to be more educated. Host we got you. Do you want to chime in on that . Guest quality education was poll. He ball we absolutely care about education. We need to be able to make our kids more comparative competitive in this very competitive environment. Host the poll, by the way, essence magazine does have it on its website. It is a joint effort between essence magazine and the National Coalition of black civic participation. You heard from Vanessa Deluca of that magazine and me as always we will take your calls and look for comments on facebook and twitter. Washington journal at 7 00 a. M. On cspan. Persons before the Supreme Court of the United States get their attention. Number 759. Number 18. Madison is probably the most famous case this court ever decided. The
