cheers and applause larry whoo all right cheers and applause oh man thank you much i appreciate it welcome the nightly show im your host larry wilmore. Were going to get right to it tonight. Big story out of the the nightly show disease center. Hospitals on alert for measles as an outbreak of the highly contagious illness continues to appear. A majority of the nearly 80 reported infections are in california. The epidemic apparently originated at disneyland. Larry thats right. Measles at disneyland. Now, thank god i stopped going after they closed. Captain e. O. , that was my little protest. Now, i know to a lot of you youngsketeers thats what you call yourselves nowadays, right . Because i havent been keeping up. Whatever. Im sure the measles doesnt sound that serious. It probably sounds like an adorable floppyeared puppy. calling to imaginary dog. hey measles who do you love, measles . Measles regular voice please also tid a bad thing. But measles is pretty serious. Its no puppy dog, but its a bitch. Fever, running nose, ends up with blindness, swelling of the brain and death. Brain swelling and death you might as well let your kids play football so what happened here . Is it like the flu shot . Did we run out of the vaccine . I thought we eradicated measles in 2000 along with the baha man. Well, thank god we have a vaccination. Most of the cases involve patients who never received a measles vaccination. Larry what . Well, why cant they get it . Can they not afford it . Are they being kept away . Is this obamacare . Skipping shots is becoming a growing trend in parts of california. Larry a trend . This is your childrens health, not coulottes why would people want to expose their kids to measles . It doesnt make sense many still fear vaccines might cause autism. Larry oh, okay. All right. Well, that sounds serious. So which doctor do we have to thank for bringing this to our attention . Call it the jenny effect. Tv host Jenny Mccarthy is known by many as an autism activist. I do believe theres a correlation between vaccinations and autism. The reason why they are not vaccinating is the vaccines are not safe. Larry oh, for bleep s sake. Jenny mccarthy . Maybe its just me, but i dont think its a good idea to take medical advice from a nondoctor. A lot of my old friends disagreed, and i miss them every day. Heres the deal Jenny Mccarthy went on the Oprah Winfrey show in 2007 to talk about the link between autism and vaccinations and said first thing i did google. I put in autism and i started my research. The university of google is where i got my degree from. Google university man, that must be some school after all, how else would she have acquired enough knowledge to write three books on autism . Three to be fair, jenny was primarily influenced by a paper written by a doctor Andrew Wakefield, so at least her source was a doctor. The supposed link between autism and vaccines was championed by british sign test championed by british scientist Andrew Wakefield but his paper was redacted. He took 600,000 from lawyers to do the study. It was proven to show that the study was fraudulent and he coerced patients. We dont call him a doctor anymore. We call him mr. Wakefield. Larry oh, wait i got one we dont kale call him doctor anymore, we call him the hippocratic oaf. We dont call him doctor anymore Sidney Poitier voice. we call him mister fibs. Sidney poitier. We dont call him doctor anymore, we call him Doogie Howser mdeez nuts i cant believe you guys laugh at that stuff. Seriously. What do legitimate doctors have to say . The pediatrics society, the c. D. C. , every international organization, the w. H. O. , everybody comes down out on the mainstream on the view that vaccines are absolutely crucial to good health. Vaccines do not cause autism. There has been a lot of back and forth on this, i have been reporting on this issue 13 years. Its remarkable how emotional this topic gets. Correlation does not ecall equal causation. Larry snap wow, Jenny Mccarthy, you just got served a dish of gupta. Let me tell you why this story is so frustrating. Please break it down for us, melinda gates. We take vaccines so for granted in the united states. We are so used to taking our kids in. Women in the developing world know the power of these. They will walk 10 kilometers in the heat with their child and line up to get a vaccine, because they have seen death. Weve forgotten what measles deaths look like. Larry exactly look about 400 people worldwide still die from measles every day but most of them live in developing countries. And now one of those developing countries is called disneyland. Were all familiar with the term firstworld problem. Its when rich americans complain about something that people in other parts of the world might consider a byproduct of luxury. Like when i have to turn on the subtitles on netflix because im eating doritos too loudly. We all can relate to that. Were americans thats how we roll, right . Well, this vaccine thing is one of those. We took a problem that we had nearly eradicated and made it ultrarelevant again. Measles is now the Matthew Mcconaughey of infectious disease. I hope youre happy. Well be right back. Its the family plan families are flocking to. Now at tmobile, get 4 lines for just a 100. A whole breakfast in one hand. cheers and applause larry thank you. Thank you very much. Welcome back. Were talking about vaccinations and the Measles Outbreak at disneyland. Joining me on the panel tonight cbs news medical and Health Contributor dr. Holly phillips comedian and the host of the new podcast kill me now judy gold, our own the nightly show contributor mike yard, and member of the thinking moms revolution zoey otoole. I want to go with you first. So the main study linking vaccinations to autism has been discredited but, from your position, is that door just completely shut . Do you feel its just completely shut on that . No one ever wants to say never, but its just overwhelmingly improbable that there is this link. Its not my opinion. Thats the opinion of the n. I. H. , the institutes of medicine c. D. C. , World Health Organization countless Autism Research organizations. The measles vaccine is not new. Its not an experimental treatment theyre throwing out there. Hundreds and hundreds of millions of doses have been given and we know that it works. So i think its one of the things where theres a mothers intuition. We dont necessarily want to put a needle in your child but this is one of those times we have to let science trump larry you think people are being too careful zoey . I know you have strong opinions about this. I do. Larry youre against vaccines, right . Im for vaccine choice. It should be up to the parent to choose whether or not to take the risks of the vaccination. Larry do you feel by taking that choice you may be putting other kids at risk . Do you fear that . Not that you, but your children might be . Im not saying youre going to go over peoples houses and go coughing but there has to be that kind of thought, right . Absolutely, that thought has occurred to everyone who has decided not to vaccinate. Larry mmhmm. The important thing to remember is we all want to do whats best for our children. Larry what is your main fear . My main fear would be for my childrens health. As a parent, i was giving my child and your job as parent from the moment the child is born is to protect that child with every ounce of your being. Larry did you have the measles vaccine . I did. Larry youre looking pretty good. I got the measles. Larry you did. I did have the measles. Larry they used to say, walk it off okay momma took it judy you vaccinated your kids, right . Of course. I was vaccinated. By kids were vaccinated. Larry are you confident you didnt do anything to harm them . Ive done a lot of things to harm them but it had nothing to do with vaccinating them. laughter larry maybe we should talk about some of those things thats a whole other show, larry. But, yeah, i felt completely confident and you know we live in new york city. Theres a lot of people in small spaces. I think about all of these scientists who have dedicated their lives to finding vaccines for these diseases and yet larry you give them the benefit of the doubt. I really do. Do you know that the vaccine manufacturers tend to make 40 billion on vaccines this year and the vast majority of their safety studies were done by the manufacturers who are making those 40 billion. Larry if somebody cures your kid of a disease and they make a lot of money, are you mad at em . I aint mad at em as long as my kid is good, i dont care how much money they make. But i am i mean im sort of kind of im conflicted about the whole thing, you know what i mean . On the one hand, as a father, you dont want to see a kid get sick and if it can help your kid, you want to do what you can do. I have a question. Wait. Larry let him finish and well go to your question. You want to do what you can to help your kid. But as a black man in america, i get a little nervous when the foft starts poking me with needles. If you guys remember the tuskegee experiment, they told them they were working on bad blood and they were giving them syphilis. So as a brother larry you dont think your kids are going to get syphilis right . That would be horrible, by the way. There was a study done in 2004 on the effect of timing of the mmr and autism rates and the study came out and said that there was no effect. However, a whistle bloar came out in the last year or so and said that the c. D. C. Did find a connection, that autism was 3. 4 times more common in black boys who got the mmr on time than it was in black boys who got it larry oh, now shes making it a race thing i have to ask you a question. How old are your kids . 15. And 8 do. They wear helmets when they ride their bikes . Knee pads . I wet your kids have knee pads, neck braces. Larry has Health Services visited your house . Yes. Im a regular stop. But there is an inherent risk in life. Larry together why is it hard to accept it . Heres what i think some of it is. I think moms have a lot of guilt when their kids have issues. Disadz have a different relationship. Dads are, like, you will be okay. But theres a lot of guilt that goes with raising kids if kids are autistic and that kind of thing. Do you think guilt plays a factor in that . I think people just want some sense of control. Autism is a very scary condition. You know, as a parent you want to be able to have some control and say, you know what . Im doing something everybody else isnt to protect my kid. Unfortunately withholding vaccines isnt really that thing. But i know this isnt the first time groups of people have questioned science, even overwhelming amounts of science. Theres the little thing called climate change, i dont know if youve heard about it. What larry right. Its true. You literally have scientists standing on glaciers and floating away and people are like no, they lit a bunsen burner under that thing. Its fine. Larry maybe if that polar bear was going away on the iceberg and he had the measles we might start believing it. Well be right back hey, im adam, and i beta tested the samsung curved ultra hdtv. No, its one of those things where it still is to some degree a personal choice but a personal choice with huge implication force other people. No, i wouldnt do it. Larry not even if no, no no. If he was near my son, i would. Your kids are there the nose the s running, the brain is getting bigger. No. Larry get 100 . cheers and applause good job. Judy. You have a chance to eradicate it, and youre the only person who can help them out, but the government is conducting it and its at tuskegee. What do you do . Keep it 100. No. Larry you dont do it . No. Larry you dont cure cancer . No. cheers and applause i dont trust the government and tuskegee larry well thats two people and two places.
