His latest is hbos hunted the war against gays in russia. We have seen an enormous attacks against gay sxtion lesbians that have multiplied across rush a. They use fighting pedophilia in russia to attack gay people. Its interesting to know that they sometimes either pretepd or they dont know genuinely the difference between pedophilia and homosexuality. And they use this words interchangeably in their dialogue with the victim. Jon please welcome, ben steele. [ applause ] so i want to get some context for this. What we showed, that was a clip of someone from the Human Rights Group speaking about this antigay violence in russia that has really spiked. Over the last few years really. Theresj a dramatic increase i violence against gay people across russia. And vigilante groups lure gay people to meet up and then assault them, attack them violently, and humiliate them as well, sometimes pouring urine on them and outing them as well by posting on social media. Jon and they are actively soliciting for them, pretending, and when they draw them in they attack them. Thats right jon so the film has incredibly nauseating footage of these groups. Theyve allowed you in to film them. We could have shown a clip of that, but you have to see it in full context, because its disgusting. And the thing that struck me is that nobody you were filming went to you afterwards and went, could you blur my face. What weve allowed you to film is horrible. Well, the vigilante groups, unfortunately, theyre proud of what they do. They believe that they are carrying out good acts, and they believe theyre acting in the name of the majority of russian people, and they have the tacit support of russian authorities. Jon they believe that, or they have it . Of course, last year the russian government passed a loosely worded antipropaganda law which bans what they call the promotion of homosexuality. Explicitly makes reference to young people, to minors, and what the government is doing there is its linking homosexuality falsely, making a claim that its dangerous to children. Thats why the groups claim falsely that homosexuality and pedophilia is one and the same. Jon so what they do is film the attacks, upload them, and then they are not prosecuted, but the individual in the film can lose their job, and has no recourse . Thoorlt. The vigilantes are not concerned about the response of the authorities. They dont theyre happy to show their faces. Jon when someone is there any discussion openly, you know, speaking of propaganda on Russian Networks where people are saying i know when we were in russia, we filmed some gay groups and said no, were going to change it from the inside. Do they have access to a platform to say that is ridiculous. It is not the same thing, and this has to stop . Unfortunately, not. Unfortunately, both the state and the church are reipforcing the idea that pedophilia and homosexuality have a linkage. And youll see the documentary, attempts by gay people to demonstrate and take action. Jon one person can demonstrate. When we filmed one person is allowed to demonstrate at a time, and even then not allowed to use the word homosexuality or gay. He just said stop hate crime. Because that could be perceived as propaganda. And k, the police come alonog and close down his attempts to demonstrate even then. Jon and this is really, though ni russia is not, you know, a back water country. This is a sophisticated country. They have a huge gay community, a very active gay community. What do they do now as the culture has turned so quickly and violently . Well, its very disturbing and distressing, because, of course, russia has a huge gay community. The majority of gay people in russia dont live remain closeted. They dont lead open lives. One percent are open about sexuality. The majority are just too afraid to come out. Its a really sad situation. Jon when you approach these groups, how do you are they open to the idea that you will film it . Did it take convincing . Did you say, hey, man, can i follow you with a camera and watch you be horrible . Well, it was a Long Association process over several months, and making contacts with the vigilante groups themselves took time. I speak russian, so i was able jon we all speak russian. Believe me. So i was able to build more of a dialogue with the people i was meeting and explained essentially im there not to pass judgment. Im there to film whats happening so that i can show it to the rest of the wormd, and its to the viewer to judge the rights and the wrongs and the merits of what theyre doing. Jon and they thought, youre giving us a fair shot, that sounds great. And i think the documentary is fair. I think it does show jon it is objective. Yeah. And of course, so the access which i had was very much on a day by day basis. I didnt know what id be filming later that day or in an hour or two. I was taggingyo along with them. Jon they want to you shut it down. They go at you. In one of the scenes a young man comes in lured to the flats and they then start to assault him. They push me out of the room. I forced my way back in, and they ordered me to put the camera down, but i keep filming for two reasons. One,rx2,n think its partialit see whats happening, but also because im concerned whats going to happen to the young man. And my filming, i feel i am acting as a bridge on the violence which could occur. Jon its phenomenal access to something you have a hard time believing it real, and i truly hope they get hbo in russia. I dont know if they do. Chances are they dont. But its remarkable work.
