In the massacre on the las vegas strip. The gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on a crowd of some 22,000 people attending a concert. A short time ago the president responded to the worst mass shooting in modern history. It was an act of pure evil. The fbi and the department of Homeland Security are working closely with local authorities to assist with the investigation and they will provide updates as to the investigation and how it develops. The president ordered flags lowered to halfstaff in honor of the victims. He and the first lady plans to travel to las vegas on wednesday. Now to the latest on the shooting. Police have identified the shooter as 64yearold Stephen Paddock. He killed himself before police burst into the hotel room. They fountain arsenal of weapons including 10 rifles. They appear to have acted alone. The borage sent people running for their lives. The singer jason aldean had taken to the stage when the first shots rang out. [ gunshots ] we have more on the investigation right now. Dan simon is joining us live from the scene in las vegas. Update us on what you are hearing from authorities there. We are on the south end of the las vegas strip. You can see the Mandalay Bay Hotel behind me. What we know from authorities is that they are finished going through the hotel room and finish going through the 32nd floor. Right now the focus is on the venue attended the conference. They used a hammer like device to begin the rampage. The hotel staff had been through the room. He is talking about House Keeping staff and that they saw nothing a miss. In terms of a motive. He couldnt comment and he couldnt go through the mind of a psychopath. He couldnt understand what led to all of this. They have the grim task of removing all of bodies, wolf. Police think the gunmen acted alone and what about the woman they were looking for. She has been described as a person of interest. 62yearold marilou danley. They lived together in their house in mesquite, nevada. She was actually out of the country when this shooting occurred. Presumably headed back to the United States. Authorities want to interrogate her. They have made some contact with her and they ended up having a conversation with her and any clues as to what may have motivated the shooter to kill those 58 people. When you say she was out of the country, are they saying where she was outside of the United States . Reporter we heard australia. Thats unconfirmed, but thats what we know at this point. She is going to be headed back and police will sit down with her and have a lengthy conversation with her. Im sure they will. We will get back to you. The shooter lived in mesquite, nevada about 80 miles from las vegas. Authorities are not saying anything about a possible motive and we are learning more about the gunmans background who described his shock at hearing the news of this massacre. This is like an asteroid fell. He had no machine guns when i moved him from melbourne to mesquite. Find out who he bought the machine guns from. Once again, there is no blame. He bought the machine guns and he did this. It was him who did this. There is no doubt about it. He was him. Completely out of character . Hes never even drawn his gun. I mean it makes no sense. He never hit anybody. Gun enthusiast . He had a couple of hand guns i think. A safe with a couple of hand guns. He might have had one long rifle, but no automatic weapons that i knew of at any time. There is no it just makes no sense. I have a 90yearold mother whose son just killed 50 plus people and now is dead. Im a special agent with the fbi. Yeah. We will see you later. We will talk now. The fbi agent arrives and they went into the house. In mesquite, nevada outside the suspects home. Have police found as far as we know anything of substance over at that home . Reporter as far as we know, what they have found is just an average home. They are trying to put the pieces together to figure out exactly what may have motivated the Senior Citizen to unleash this sort of terror in las vegas. We have been able to piece together from relatives and people here in the community is that he did have a pilots license. A license that was no longer valid because of medical certification lapsed. He had a hunting license in alaska. He was an accountant. Didnt have children. He is divorced, but had a live in girlfriend. If there is anything that sticks out, his brother said their father at one point was a bank robber and at one point being on the fbis 10 most wanted list. Beyond that, the police say and you can see the barricade here, they are trying to block off traffic into the community. They are still going through that house. They havent found anything that stands out where they say this is why. At least anything they have been able to tell us and the community here saying they simply do not understand why a 64yearold man would do this. The police say they had no contact with this man. That is negative and notable. We havent run into too many people who had an active relationship with him. He appeared to pretty much stick to himself. Wolf . What else do we know about that other than it lapsed for medical reasons. He appeared to have two planes at one point, but he had this license. Its several years old, but because of that medical certification, because he didnt maintain that, the pilots license is no longer valid. His father you say was once on the fbis most wanted list . What else do we know about that . Thats perhaps the most striking thing out of all of this. We are starting to paint the profile of a very normal guy who came to this quiet community. A Retirement Community of 55 plus. You have to be 55 or older to live here. His father and brother said that his father at one point was a bank robber. He died several years ago according to the brother. He had made the fbis 10 most wanted list. Beyond these details, we dont have too much more. Out of everything we have been able to learn, thats the one thing that sticks out in this mans profile. The Washington Post reported he was an avid gambler as well as avid concert goer in las vegas. Im sure we will learn a lot more about Stephen Paddock in the hours to come. We will get back to you in mesquite, nevada. The las vegas area, hospitals are inundated in Southern Nevada. This is the only Level One Trauma Center in nevada. The spokes woman for the hospital and is joining us now. What can you tell us about the conditions of the patients at your facility . Good afternoon. We received 104 patients since last night when the shooting happened. 12 of the patients are still in Critical Condition this morning. Eight of them had to go straight back to the operating rooms. We have a stand alone Trauma Center here at umc meaning everything we need to care for critical patients is contained in our four walls. We are not moving patients around the hospital. They are contained to be cared for. Other patients drove themselves to the Emergency Department and were cared for in the Emergency Department while more critically injured were being cared for in the Trauma Center. If someone thinks a Family Member might be hospitalized, what should they do . Simply call our main line for now. 7023832000. They will make sure they get to the right team reuniting patients with families so that they no longer wait and worry and know how everybody is doing. I know you need people to donate blood. If people are in the vegas area want to donate blood, what should they do . Absolutely. We have donation banks across the street from umc to collect the donations. Our shelves are still fully stocked so there is not an issue right now, but trauma continues here in las vegas. The Trauma Center is still open and you will receive the normal as we call them traumas coming in. We want to make sure we are ready for the rest of the patients, the normal amount of patients we will see today. Absolutely people can donate blood. Have you had a crisis like this with 100 patients receiving emergency medical treatment at the same time . Wolf, the last time we had anything close was when a woman ran on to the las ves gas strip. We had 17 patients. 104 is overwhelming at first, but this is what the team is trained to do. They are trained to treat and stabilize mass casualties and mass amounts of patients. Thats what they did in no short order in the Early Morning hours. How is your staff holding up under these awful circumstances . Wolf, they are a great punch of people and the hearts and souls are in the work they do. It runs in their blood to take care of injured folks and those who need critical attention when those really lifesaving seconds count. What are the Major Concerns Going Forward . I think making sure our families are taken care of. We know the patients are taken care of in the icu units across the campus, but we want to make sure the families and the loved ones are taken care of and receiving care and information as timely as possible. Obviously very, very early in the process. Yes, it still is very early. What is going to be significantly important in this investigation is you have a huge crime scene there in las vegas. In addition that as well, there will be collecting of Video Evidence as possible. Even though the subject has been identified and expired at the scene, some of the more basic questions of course is we want to be certain he was acting alone. Anybody who knew about this, took part in the planning in any way, the police there both at the state and federal and local level want to make sure they pursue anyone involved. If there were others involved, the critical question here of course is going to be what was the motive . What was the reasoning behind such a tragic and horrific act . According to police in list vegas, 10 rifles in that room on the 32nd floor of the mandalay day hotel and broke a window with something akin to a hammer in order to start shooting. So many people were saying it was automatic fire. The guns or at least some of the weapons were automatic. Where does he get that kind of stuff . What it says to me, this is not something he probably did on a whim. This was something probably very well planned and had been planning it for sometime. He certainly came with a type of armory he had in his possession to be there for a lengthy period of time and create a lot of havoc, which he did. Clearly this is something that just did not happen in the spur of the moment and what will be interesting is to determine how he got that much weaponry inside of that hotel without it being noticed. Its not impossible to do, but certainly i think something we all can learn from this event. Something like this is very, very hard to train and prepare for when you have a subject that takes himself to such a high elevation and target people who are totally innocent. 22,000 people approximately that were there inside that event who were just totally helpless. It is horrific to think about. What do you need to legal he purchase automatic rifles here in the United States. A lot of our viewers are watching right now and anxious to get an answer to that. Well, i think thats really a question that is a great question for atf in our country. There are certain states that will allow for automatic weaponry. You have to have a special permit from atf that is allowable in some states. I dont want to speak with a sense of being exact about that, but it could be. Whats important here to note is that he was firing automatic gunfire. That was repetitive. Commonly lay people will refer to as machine gunfire. You can tell by the video sound that we all have heard that there is no way anyone can pull a trigger that fast with such a high volume of bullets that are being expended from those assault weapons. Its very scare. This is what we have to live with today. It is certainly going to create a great deal of question in the Public Safety community as to how we get in front of events such as this. In addition, what is going to be important. And thats the only thing that could have prevented this. You hear the automatic gunfire and it sounds like a battlefield in iraq or somewhere else. You are watching breaking news of the massacre in las vegas. At least 58 people are dead. More than 500 are injured. Police say the gunman, 64yearold Stephen Paddock opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel in las vegas. Tom foreman, walk us through how this unimaginable tragedy unfolded. If you are familiar with las vegas running through here. The area where this concert was occurring is right in here. I want you to note a couple of things. The stage is down here. The shooter was over here on mandalay bay somewhere in this area shooting across the strip to hit the people in the concert. To give you a better view of this. Lets give you the range. From where he was shooting, some of these shots would have been in the neighborhood of 300 to 400 yards. The type of ammunition is not necessarily well suited to that range of shooting if you are looking for extreme accuracy, but thats not necessarily what people were looking for. Heres another way of looking at it. This ariel shot would approximate the view he had. This is where the concerts were. They are in an open area with the stage right over here. You can see how people would be sort of packed into the forward area of it. It doesnt have to be an accurate shooter if they are laying a great volume of shots into this area. I listen to the bursts, somewhere between 7 and 10 seconds and there is a pause and then they come back in. That would be consistent with an automatic weapon. Another part of the geography, if this is president his viewpoint as he was shooting into this densely packed crowd, this is the main entrance and exit where many people tried to go out. They were coming towards the gunfire when they exited. Why would that happen . People typically in almost all situations want to go towards the way they came in and also look at the crowd. People were looking around because they were not thinking. When the shot comes around to the right, you can easily see right there, this is where the shots are coming from. People are looking around because they dont know. As they stay in that spot, they were staying exposed to the fire as much as all of them wanted to be out of it. Heart breaking. Good explanation. Thanks very much. Megan was an eyewitness to the shooting. Tell us where you were and what you saw. Yes, it was about 10 00 and i had just gotten out of a private event at the fountain room in the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the 54th floor. There were many different rooms and one big bar that overlooked out to the strip. Around 10 00, one of my girlfriends and i went out to take pictures and there was about 10 or 15 people out there when i stepped out. I heard this nonstop fires. Machine gun. In my gut i was like that doesnt sound normal. It was delayed reaction and im taking pictures and i stop and hear it again. Then it was just happening too quickly. Too many rounds. Everyone started screaming and i looked down and i grabbed my phone out and i got that video. That horrific video that i shot. You can see the angle on the balcony, the amount of fire and rounds, you felt where it was coming from and the second part of the video felt like the shots were coming more left across the street. Nobody could if there was more than one shooter. The poor people down there, way open field for the shooter. You can see these people were trying to run for cover and couldnt quick enough. Running and then just you sees not moving in my video. It was horrific. There are no words. Security had to get us inside right away. For us 100 people who were up at the 54th floor, what was scary for us is within 10 minutes of coming inside, s. W. A. T. Teams showed up. None of us knew it was the s. W. A. T. Team. You were on the balcony on the 64th floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel . Yes. And you were facing the concert. He was on the 32nd floor and he broke a window and started firing towards the concert goers. You were above him. How long did the gunfire last based on your estimate . Oh, gosh. That fire lasted a good five to seven seconds and then it lasts another 10 seconds and then it stopped for 30 seconds and then picks back up another 10 or 15 seconds. It was so sporadic. It was a machine gun. Nonstop firing. When we came back in, the s. W. A. T. Team came out screaming really intense to get down, get down. All of us scattered for our lives. I thought it was the shooter that came up on the floor. We didnt know it was the s. W. A. T. Team coming in to secure us and make sure we were safe. And also to make sure the shooter was not on our floor knowing we were on the floor of the balcony. We ran for cover and i was on the ground for a good 10 minutes hiding behind one of the couches. Still not knowing that it was the s. W. A. T. Team and finally it was on the floor with me and whispered i think its the s. W. A. T. Team. Even in that moment, in my heart i was like how do i know this is the legit s. W. A. T. Team . That goes through your head. They were Walking Around and i felt them come over me. There are no words. After the s. W. A. T. Team was there, just a shock. And the horror to know how much longer it was going to go on. Thats been my experience. I put up a video on facebook of right after. The guy sitting next to me. The video on the Ground Holding hand for 10 minutes. Just praying. You were a guest at the Mandalay Bay Hotel yourself . Yeah, i wasnt staying at that hotel. I was staying at the hard rock where i am right now. We were on lockdown and we were not released until an hour ago. You were stuck there that whole time. How are you holding up . Im good. I think it will hit me when i get on a plane today and fly back to new jersey. And then i see the pictures of the young innocent people and bodies laying on the ground and covered in blood and people throwing their bodies over other people to protect them and get them out of harms way. In my opinion, enough is enough. How many Mass Shootings do we have to have before the laws are changed to protect us . Its not that difficult. They put in metal detectors. This murderer has over 10 weapons when they found him in his hotel room . He was able to bring this amount of weapons into this hotel within three days of being here . It just leaves me speechless. You bought concert tickets to surprise your fiance. Tell us what you saw. I did. I bought him tickets to vegas and got these concert tickets a while ago. We were on the left side of the stage kind of towards the middle of it. Enjoying the concert and you hear a noise and it sounds like a firecracker. Not really sure what was going on. My fiance heard it again and he looked at me and told me to run. He said just run. I was frozen and i didnt know what to do. We ran through the house of blues. We were jumping over and running into the streets. The cars didnt know what was going on. They were seeing people coming out into the street. It sounded like it was coming from inside of the concert. Nobody knew it was coming from the 32nd floor at the time until you got safe and you were in your hotel room and you turn on the news and you find out that it was coming from above. People on the floor, im so thankful and blessed we got out of there and there was another couple with us and she asked if she could stay in the room with us because they were at the luxor. We ended up having like 12 other people in our room with us at the time. It was very scary. How long did it take for to you realize it wasnt firecrackers or anything like that. These were bullets coming from an automatic weapon. It was fast. Within five seconds. My fiance knew something is not right. He goes run. We started running and people were kind of just standing for a split second and everybody just started running for their lives. Where were you running towards . Did you know where to run . So we were at the house of blues on friday and we knew there was a back area. We knew to cut around that area and we stayed at the mgm. My fiance and i kept running until we reached the mgm. We didnt stop. We ran the entire way and were hopping fences and going through parking lots and hiding behind cars and everything. Jordan, how are you and your fiance . Whats his name . How are you doing . We are both very shooken up right now. Thankfully we are at the airport right now. I cant stop shake. My fiance, the second we got into the hotel room, it hit him and he started throwing up. I never experienced this. Its insane. Its crazy. Its very, very sad indeed. The brother of the las vegas shooter speaking to cnn a little while ago. Listen to this. We are trying to understand whats wrong. What happened. We have no more idea what happened now than we had an hour ago. We are still just completely befuddled. Dumb struck. The last time i communicated with my brother was about when did we get power back . Five days after the storm. He texted me and said hows mom. I texted him back. Does she know what happened . Yeah. We found out when our phones started ringing with the cops at 1 00 this morning. It had nothing to do with any political or religious organization. No white supremacist. Nothing as far as i know. I have only known him for 57 years. Your father was a bank robber . Thats correct. We are all proud. My father was on the top 10 list for a while. His them is benjamin paddock. I didnt know him. We didnt know him. There is no he was in jail and broken out of jail. Does he have a history at all . He doesnt even have parking tickets no criminal record. No record of any affiliations. Nothing. What about Mental Illness . Absolutely not. As far as i know. Once again. Nothing like that. He was a wealthy guy. He liked to play video poker. He went on cruises. He sent his mother cookies. Big huge crazy boxes of cookies and stuff. Paddock, the brother of Stephen Paddock, the 64yearold shooter who committed this massacre in las vegas. Lets get insight from charles ramsey. A cnn Law Enforcement analyst and police chief and philadelphia chief commissioner. Whats your reaction to the comments to the words we just heard from eric paddock, the younger brother of this killer. Its very unusual and im sure that there is something that they will find eventually, but right now on the surface, there doesnt appear to be anything there. You heard it from the sheriff and his own family. There has to be something there that would cause him to do what he did. This is not something you just i dont believe spur of the moment decided to do. He was in the had telesince the 28th and he was well equipped with the ammunition and the firearms. There had to be something. As they go through the evidence they recover from the various locations, hard drives and so forth, maybe they will come up with something. This clearly was an act aimed at causing mazz casualties and doesnt that make this an act of terror . In the minds of most folks, the motive is what determines whether or not its an act of terrorism. They dont want to jump to any conclusions. They will go through carefully the information and right now its a mass shooting. It has to have certain characteristics or motivation in order for that to happen by the way terrorism is defined. I obtained audio from the shooters hotel room. I want you and the viewers to listen to this. On the suspects door. I need everybody in the hall way to get back. We need to see if we can get any response from this guy to see if he is in here or moved somewhere else. From the 32nd floor, Everyone Needs to move back. All units move back. Breech breech breech. They go through the door. Apparently the shooter had shot himself and killed himself. Thats a terrifying situation for a swat team to breech a door like that knowing there is a mass murderer inside. Absolutely. Whats remarkable is able to locate the room from witnesses down on the ground. You can see muscle flashes and guests in the hotel were on the 32nd floor. No doubt could tell where the sound was coming from. That Las Vegas Police is an Excellent Police department. The s. W. A. T. Team is well trained. Hotels and casinos have reinforced doors and part of the training is how to make that explosive breach. Not every department trains for that. To have them there that quickly was remarkable. Im sure they noticed the window on the 32nd floor. You cant open those windows. He used a hammerlike device to breakthrough the glass and start firing. You can see there was a hole in that window, presumably people on the ground and Law Enforcement saw that as well and that gave an indication to go to the 32nd floor, right . I would say thats true although when you stand on the ground looking at a tall building, its hard to judge what floor. It would give you a good idea. You couple that with other information, they can pinpoint it quickly. Remarkable that they responded as quickly as they did to resolve the situation. Whats next in this investigation . Its going to be a long process. You still have crime scenes and you have the hotel. I guess they cleared it, but they hold that 32nd floor for a period of time and then you have the venue and probably still have bodies that have not yet been removed from the scene. They have to really go through carefully to document everything. They have witnesses they are going to have to interview and hospitals and people who probably just saw and heard what was going on and ran home. They will eventually give police a call and say i was there and they will have to interview those folks as well. Of course the search warrants at the residence and sifting through the evidence that was recovered there. This is not going to be over any time soon. I like the way the sheriff is handling things. He is briefing the media every couple of hours when he has something to say. He is not speculating at all. Its important that Accurate Information get out to the public. We were with a group of friends and enjoying the concert that jason had gotten 20 minutes into his set. We were stage right to the east side of the venue. In the lower level on one of the suites that you can get food. We heard maybe five or six pops like the middle poppers that kidding will throw on the fourth of july. No one really thought too much about it was within ten seconds followed by rapid, 20, 30, 40 of those pops, and it was at that time that the crowd hushed, and i think somebody yelled gun and everybody hit the deck and tried to cover. Ten, 15 seconds of silence and then another 30, 40, 50 rapid rounds of which then people really started to head towards exits or any type of cover, and as you mentioned before all of the action started my wife had gone to the restroom so we were separated and i went out the back with one of the security guys and pounded on the doors and yelled into the restrooms which there was no response, and it was chaos. People running for the exits. People using wheelbarrows or food carts to push people through the east exit. There is a street behind the venue and a big dirt parking lot where everybody tried to get away. It was unknown. Was it coming from a shooter in the crowd . Nobody would have guessed it was from the 32nd floor of the mandalay. Kathy kathy, you were separated from your husband. When did you realize there was an attack and how long did it take for the two of you to be reunited . When i was in the restroom, i could hear the gun shots. So i immediately crouched down in the corner and locked the door and waited for those two to cease, and then i came out of the restroom into the chaos and the screaming and the running, i started running with the crowd. No idea where my husband is. If hes shot, if hes dead or alive or our friends. Shots started again and people dropped and a group of us ran into a food truck and took cover behind the seats there and those shots stopped and then started running again and the shots started again and we all dove under cars, and just hugged each other and helped the woundeded and then we found a car with the driver that we all ran into it with two wounded people. A man shot in the stomach and another man shot in the leg, and i just went in the car with him to the hospital. I had no phone, nothing. I didnt know if my husband was alive until maybe four hours later. Wow. Are you guys okay . Kathy, are you okay . Yes. Physically, yes. It was pretty traumatizing being at the hospital and watching what was coming in there. Only imagine. Gary, what about you . Still very shaken. Thankful that we are here to tell the story. Incredibly saddened that 60plus other people cannot say that and 500 others you know, had to suffer through this. Its just its sickening. Gary and kathy, thank you for your eyewitness account, and were obviously, very, very relieved that both of you are okay. I want to quickly go to cnns stephanie elam. Shes at the hospital in las vegas. Whats the latest youre getting on the injured, stephanie . Reporter wolf, we are at the Medical Center of Southern Nevada where it is the only levelone Trauma Center in the state. This is where they had 104 patients that arrived last night as this was happening. I want to introduce you to dr. John files. Tell me, have you seen anything that compared to what you saw last night . This was the largest, vent weve ever done. Weve had other mass casualties and this was a big event with a lot of walking wounded and a lot of criticals. Reporter were you at any point overwhelmed by the number of casualties that came into the building . No. We drill on this a couple of times a year and we weraible to expand into the hospital and everybody got a bed right away and everyone went into the upon rating room. Were there surgeons and doctors . We called all of the staff in and we had more than enough an anesthesia and health care providers. What kind of wounds are you seeing . Its more than just gunshot wounds. Quite a few more gunshot wounds, there were pedestrians struck by vehicles and others who had fallen and other serious injures that took place. Do you think at this point with the number of critical that you have, i think it was 12 patients that were in Critical Condition and are you concerned about the patients and whether or not theyll pull through. We are always concerned and many will go back to the operating room today. What was it like if you can paint the scene about what it was like in the operating room as you had this number of people coming in, and so many of them in such desperate need. The operating room is perhaps the calmest venue. The patients got excellent care, but the alarming thing was watching the front door open. It never stopped and gurneys just kept coming in, trucks would pull up. People would be brought in by friend, private vehicles and taxis dropped off patients and they just kept coming in. We appreciate you speaking to us and letting us know here how the situation was. Wolf, as you can see, they were prepared even though theyre the only levelone Trauma Center in nevada, and because of that they have trained for this and ready for it and they said they were able to handle the numerous casualties that came into the building last night.
