Ariel view of the destruction, buildings reduced to rubble a huge crack in a major road. And new surveyens video shows people inside a restaurant as the earthquake hit on saturday see them thrown from side to side as they scramble to get out of the building. At least 16 countries as well as the European Union and several International Aid agencies are sending assistance to nepal. The United States dispatched a search and rescue team from Fairfax County in virginia. The epicenter of the 7. 8 quake was less than 50 miles northwest of nepals capital of kathmandu. Our chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta is joining us live from kathmandu. Hes just back from a tent city where reporters have not been before. Sanjay, this is devastating. Thank you so much for being there. Tell us what youve seen . Ill tell you we were inside one of the busiest hospitals in the city center called bear hospital a hospital the takes care of some of the most urgent trm ma cases in the city. Even for them this is a situation that they had not encountered before even though they take care of a lot of trauma patients yesterday or twos days ago now, right immediately after the earthquake they were quite busy as expected. There was a little bit of a lull afterwards they told me but what happened is that was probably during the time that the rescue missions were taking place and they basically got a deluge of patients again today that was quite remarkable even while we were few minutes after we arrived, ambulances taxis, people walking in being carried in. It was extraordinary, wolf. Most of the injuries crush injuries brain injuries spine injuries all really from the rubble. People in their homes, having their homes fall all around them and causing these types of injuries. Today the patients that came in were, you know one to two days out from the earthquake itself so they had been not receiving care during that time. They were quite sick by the time they arrived, wolf. I know sanja, you may be a worldclass journalist and you certainly are, but a worldclass neurosurgeon and as often happens in these stories you were called upon to use that medical degree your experience and save peoples lives. Tells us what happened . Well wolf you know its a situation where immediately in the wake of a Natural Disaster these demands for care outpace the supply of care in terms of resources, but also sometimes in terms of personnel and wolf they needed another set of hands basically. They asked me if i would perform this operation because, you know they had just theyre very busy. They have doctors, very good doctors here in nepal, but when you have this many patients that all arrive at the same time it can be very busy. In this particular hospital they literally have not stopped operating almost since this earthquake just as soon as one patient is finished another patient goes in. The situation is challenging because they dont have all the resources they need but this little girl 8yearold girl her name is salina in a more remote area a distance away from the capital city. My understand she was outside her home the time the earthquake struck and her home fell it crumbled to the ground and she sustained a brain injury as a result of that. She was brought to the hospital by friends and family. At the time this poor 8yearold girl didnt know where her parents were if her parents were alive. She needed ap operation. And we did that operation and im happy to report shes doing well and her parents whereabouts have been reported. Caring for another sibling who fractured both of his legs during the earthquake. Its a chaotic situation. Very happy for this little girl but so many patients that sort of fit this type of pattern, wolf where they come from quite a distance the injuries are pretty significant and sometimes they dont know how to get ahold of their families. Thank you so much for saving that little girls life maybe. And without your expertise maybe she wouldnt be okay right now. Sanjay, i know you got to run, but quickly around the world should more people be coming in doctors, physicians nurses others to help . I think there does seem to be a shortage of some of these things in terms of personnel, doctors and nurses also in terms of some of the resources from basic supplies to things like antibiotics, pain medications. I think theres an infrastructure issue, wolf. You know the hospital we were at did have generator power but much is gasoline. Theyre being judicious about the use of the gasoline and trying to, you know today doing the operation they did not want to use power tools, for example which might zap energy more rudimentary tools for the operation, so an infrastructure issue. What i would say wolf youve covered these stories for many years as well is that right now theres a need. I would remind people a few weeks from now, few months from now, there will still be a need. So, you know just dont forget that part of it. You know even though you may not be thinking about it as much a few weeks or monthses from now, if youre willing to donate your time or energy that would be a time to do it as well. Good advice. Thanks so much for what youre doing. We will stay in close touch with you. Sanjay is not only reporting the news but saving lives as he often does in these kind of disaster stories. Dr. Sanjay gupta, certainly proud hes a key member of our cnn global team. As the search for survivors continues, the world is now stepping in to try to help. Theyre rushing in urgently needed aid. More than a dozen countries are pitching in. The United States is providing a total of 10 million in aid so far, sending in the Virginia Task force as one, thats a team trained for urban search and rescue operations made up of about 57 searchers, six dogs as well. Israel is sending a medical contingent that includes 122 doctors, nurses and paramedics pakistan is sending an entire 30 bed hospital. And the World Health Organization is deploying emergency aid kits of medicine and supplies. This is meant to cover the needs of 80,000 people for as long as as three months. With all this aid starting to flow into the country, how will it be effectively deployed . Joining us is matt darvass from world vision joining us from one of the towns near the epicenter of the earthquake. How hard hit is that area matt . What are you seeing there . Yeah wolf. I cannot stress enough that this is simply an area that is not getting the attention it deserves. In the villages surrounding here were hearing of villages of 750 people villages of 1,000 people where entire villages have been wiped off the face of mountains. Helicopters are trying to get to these areas, but they are not the right helicopters, they do not have the right equipment and they are unable to land and rescue people. So we are seeing incredibly difficult circumstances here. I spoke to one man, wolf he had come to where i am a day before the earthquake, after the earthquake struck he called his wife and she said she was terrified. 70 of the buildings in their village had collapsed. Their family only just escaped. He lost contact with the village and his wife at 10 00 p. M. No ones has had contact since. There was 60 to 80 people children and the elderly buried under rubble. Two helicopters have tried to reach that village and none have been successful. This is indicative of what is happening in vil js around me where i am. Youre saying its difficult to reach the areas, the epicenter outside of kathmandu, and the need is desperate, is that what im hearing . Absolutely. The stories are not getting out as far as i can tell im one of the only people here speaking to international media. The locals are extremely concerned. This is two days on and no one has reached these people in the villages where the people are buried. Were talking entire vil ams of people that could be gone or unreached. Are you seeing any International Assistance search and rescue operations medical personnel examining in the area . So far none . World vision is deploying to this area. Well have emergency supplies in the forms of tents and tarps, things like Water Purification tablets and sanitation kits to set up shelter. There was relief from the World Food Program and save the children that i saw in the late hours of the day. But like i said at the moment the issue is getting it to these cutoff villages that cannot be reached. We have aid here but we didnt get it to them. We have to get the right helicopters to the remote areas before its too latep. My fear is it will be too late for many people here. Is your fear that there are people trapped in the rubble and that no one is removing that rubble to try to save them and if no up with does they could die . Is that the major fear right now . Thats correct. In that mans village i was speaking to he told me there was two confirmed deaths and 60 to 80 people buried under their houses that people could not get to. No one has had contact with them since 10 00 p. M. No helicopter can land there. I have no idea what is happening up there. Their Food Supplies were crushed under their homes. They saw grain and corn in their homes. When he spoke to his wife and children at 6 00 p. M. After the earthquake they were complaining of being hungry. All right. Matt were going to stay ins close touch with you. Thanks so much for what you and your team is doing. The need is enormous. Matt darvas from world vision. Amazing destruction going on and the world is crying out. People in nepal are crying out for help. To find out what you can do to helps these victims of the Nepal Earthquake go to cnn. One climber nick survived the avalanche on quest to become the first person with Cystic Fibrosis to climb mt. Everest. Hes joining us on the phone from kathmandu right now. Nick take us back to that moment when you first knew something had gone horribly wrong. Describe what happened . I was in my tent in base camp relaxing. It was one of our rest days. I felt the earth start to move underneath me. Id been in earthquakes before so i knew what it was. A massive crack and i knew something that was way more wrong than normal. I stuck my head outside the tent and i saw what i could only describe as a tsunami of rock ice, snow coming towards me and it was extremely high and coming extremely fast. And normally in base camp youre safe from avalanches because they die at the bottom of the mountain but the earthquake triggered, must have shaken all the ice and rock off the mountain and i ran as fast as i could to get shelter knowing it would outpace me at some point and smashed into me and smashed me to the ground and to rock ice, and it was a suffocating experience as the snow starts to fill your lungs and you struggle and hope that at some point it examines to an end. How badly were you injured . I had a couple of head wounds. Ive got cuts and, you know, bruises all over me. Ive got ribs which were broken or cracked which means breathing or moving is can be quite painful at times. You know injured enough that i was among the evacuees thankfully but i feel extremely thankful that i managed to survive what i thought could be a lifeending experience at the time. We understand at least 17 people were killed in that avalanche, including some members of your own group. Is that right . Yeah. One member of my team was unfortunately killed. Its a lottery as to what happens when Something Like that hits you. And unfortunately he was extremely unlucky and died almost instantaneously. Nick good luck to you. At least you survived, obviously, were happy about that. Our condolences on your colleague, your friend there. Well stay in close touch with you. Thankfully youre okay relatively speaking. Lets get back to our top story the deadly earthquake that has claimed more than 3900 lives so far. As nepal tries to dig out from the earthquake governments and organizations around the world are pledging support and supplies. Now were learning the possible cost of nepals disaster at least 5 billion. That number could go up dramatically. Joining us now from honolulu is james, the former u. S. Ambassador to nepal served there from 2004 to 2007 and senior director for asia for the National Security council at the white house. Hes in the private sector working on Business Development in the region. Ambassador first of all i assume youve been in touch with friends, colleagues in nepal. What are you hearing about the rescue operation . Well you know in kathmandu, most of my friends have survived just fine except theyre almost all out in the open areas. There are reports that aid is getting out very slowly and that is only to be expected. The country is so rugged the roads are largely broken that its going to be extremely difficult getting aid into the areas outside of kathmandu that need it. Let me play something for you. Valerie is the un under secretary general for humanitarian affairs and spoke to Christiane Amanpour about the challenges of getting to the desperate areas, those in desperate need right now. Listen to this. The difficulty is that nepal is a mountainous country so getting to those outlying areas remains difficult so there is a need for helicopters to get there. There is only one runway at the airport so you can imagine trying to have commercial traffic and aid flights coming in is putting a huge pressure on already limited resources. This is the difficulty. You spent years there. I assume you agree that nepals government certainly is not equipped to handle this type of emergency, is that right . Yeah. Wolf this is a very, very poor country with very few resources either natural or human. The salaries are so low, the economic communities so slight that talented people a lot of them leave the country. Yeah theres a lack of the people that would be needed on the ground to handle this. The military is competent, theyre small, and again the magnitude of this disaster is so huge that i assume theyre overwhelmed too. So the International Community must rally and get there and help to save lives. Obviously that clock is ticking. I understand also ambassador back in 2005, when you served there, you warned about the devastation that an earthquake would likely cause in nepal. Is this what you anticipated . What you expected . Well to be honest this is by no means the worst case scenario. I mean back then we were looking at a really bad quake, perhaps killing scores of thousands in the Kathmandu Valley itself. So in a way, things are not quite as bad as we had feared. That being said though logistical constraints the lady was talking about all too real. The kathmandu runway is very short. You cant land the biggest planes there. So youve got all sorts of logistical issues and as i said the question of do you have the people to administer large aid effort . The remote areas, we just heard from one aid worker saying that this is much closer to the epicenter of the earthquake that theres really very few people from the outside that have gotten in to help at all and thats where there could be huge numbers of casualty death and injuries. The problem is people dont even know because no one can get close to that area. You know that area. You traveled all over the country. Tell us about it. Its extremely rugd. What you get in nepal is scattered settlement. Any place where you have a little bit of land even if at a 20 degree angle, many huts many villages are three to four days walk away from anything that resembles a road. Yeah, its an incredible logistical nightmare out there. The fear is that 4,000 number approaching 4,000 deaths and obviously many more thousands, people injured, those numbers could skyrocket once you get to some of those other areas. They havent even had a chance apparently to inspect some of those areas. One final question ambassador before i let you go. The monsoon season i take it is coming there. Whats going to be the impact of that in the search recovery the rescue operation, the humanitarian mission that is so desperately needed . Well you probably have five to six weeks before the monsoons really set in so theyre in a race against time. What will happen is the roads that do exist will become largely impassable. The big question is the human suffering on the ground. If you do have large numbers of people camping out, either under a tarp or maybe under some sort of temporary shelter they put together theyre going to be very vulnerable to disease and, of course, the other question is is the food flowing into these areas by then. Yeah the its a race against time against the monsoon. Yeah. This is a real disaster. Obviously. James moriarty was the United States ambassador to nepalp. Thanks very much for joining us. Were going to stay on top of the breaking news coverage. Up next much more. Well have some of the devastating stories that are emerging now behind the pictures. Welcome back to our viewers in the United States and around the world. Im wolf blitzer reporting from washington. Crews are racing against time to find survivors of the worst earthquake to hit nepal in 80 years. Rescue teams have found some people alive if the the rubble including this little boy. But hopes of finding more survivors, those hopes are fading as the hours pass. The death toll now approaching 4,000. Many thousands of others injured. The u. S. State department they are saying that they are aware of at least four americans who have died. Drone video shows an ariel view o some of the moments and the monuments and buildings damaged by the quake. Many buildings that have stood there for centuries, they were toppled. Governments and aid agencies from around the world are rushing to get assistance to nepal. So far at least 16 countries plus the European Union have announced that they are sending aid. The epicenter of the magnitude 7. 8 quake was less than 50 miles northwest of nepals capital of kathmandu. A powerful aftershock yesterday hit closer to mt. Everest where the quake triggered a deadly avalanche and theres been Little Information on the damage and death toll from more remote areas. Senior International Correspondent arwa damon reports from kathmandu. Reporter managed to scale the ladder before rescue teams started. The building is not secure. But he doesnt care. His father is buried somewhere under the rubble of a collapsed church behind a school. He was the past are. Its sad, its hard he says. So far, six bodies were recovered here. Many more remain. Most shops are closed. People unwilling to venture far from their families especially those lucky enough to still have each other. This was a fivestory building. The bottom three floors have completely collapsed and only two are visible. For some of those waiting here there is a little bit of hope. Because more than a day after the earthquake happened the rescuers manage to find a woman. She wasnt even really harmed. In a a lot of shock but alive. Thats what keeps him believing his wife and 7yearold daughter are still alive. I raced here after the earthquake i havent slept for days he says. Workers dig painstakingly slowly removing piles of stones and debris. They spot someones hair but cant reach the body or tell if its male or female. For him, its too much. All he remembers now is how happy he and his family were. Throughout the city makeshift camps, many families are still too afraid of aftershocks to go home. This is kathmandus main park. Outside a mobile Medical Clinic the walking wounded wait. This woman injured when panicked crowds stampeded. A boy hit by a falling brick. I felt Something Like a fire and i ran and then something hurt me a lot, he says. I am still scared. And so is everybody else. Those who survived clinging to those they loved. The tremors may have stopped for now, but the terror remains. Arwa joining us on the phone from kathmandu. Arwa update us on what you know about this search and rescue effort thats clearly under way. Well, its still very intense and difficult, wolf as you saw in that piece. Its quite overwhelming even though you have all of these International Teams that are arriving from nations around the world sending quite a bit of support, but its still not enough at this stage. They need the heavy machinery on the ground that they would use to move the large pieces of rubble and its just so time consuming and painstaking of a process. It really takes quite a lot of manpower and so while everyone on the ground is doing the best they can, its simply not enough. More concern wolf is not just the search and rescue effort happening here in the capital but whats happening in the farflung areas that teams have not been able to reach just yet. These are places that are so remote in normal times it can take days to reach them so imagine how difficult it is going to be to reach them under these circumstances when roads are blocked out and the only way in or out is by helicopter. So what i take it, arwa the numbers nearly 4,000 confirmed dead, many thousands of others injured, once they get closer to the epicenter youre in kathmandu, the capital of nepal, the epicenter about 50 miles outside of kathmandu, once they get closer and closer to those remote areas, potentially we hope it doesnt happen but they could find a lot more bodies is that the fear . It most definitely is. In fact the head of one Aid Organization was saying in his estimation the death toll could rise as high as 10,000. So many of these areas have been yet to be reached, so many areas because theyre so remote even if someone survived the earthquake survived the landslides the concern is that without proper food water, if theyre injured without proper medical care they could end up perishing because assistance has not been able to reach them and that is something that so many are potentially having to grapple with and the Aid Organizations are trying to find a way around. To give you an idea of how far away these places are, one man who we met earlier this morning has Family Living about 20 kilometers away from the epicenter, two cousins who work on mt. Everest, has not heard from them there is no communication at all to these areas. He has no idea how hes going to get there. The fear is when various aid groups rescue missions reach these places theyre going to find is going to be beyond horrific. Part of our team of excellent reporters there on the scene for us doing amazing work. Arwa be careful over there. Well stay in very, very close touch with you. A warning to our viewers in the United States and around the world some of you may find these pictures upsetting. Families in nepal are being forced to wait in line for funerals. Traditionally the dead are buried in design spots in nepal but with nearly 4,000 dead so far many are carrying out hindu rituals in neighborhoods or open fields whiles others wait in long lines at traditional temples to give last rites. Former president bush has been relatively quiet, completely quiet, doesnt want to go after president obama staying back but he has decided to go out and speak. What did he say . Pretty shocking and new comments for the first time in a very in pretty shocking and new comments and for the first time in a very long time president bush criticized the sitting president in a closed door meeting on iran isis and his handling of many other things pep said obama has been naive. He said the president of iran doesnt represent a new iran. And the president doesnt have a plan. Did he say why he decided to go public. To criticize and condemn the president s policies. Designee didnt want to enter the public arena. Then he went on to criticize the president pretty severely. We can say he thought he had some confident. There were a lot of people there. I got some details. Other reporters got other details. He a lot to get off his chest and just ready to make those comments. He basically was suggesting that the prosed nuclear deal with iran would be a disaster for the United States is that what he was saying he said three things. One, to lift sanctions before iran had agreed to stop their nuclear prom was short sighted. He said president obamas contention you can snap back sanctions after the fact wasnt plausible. He said it would have long term ramification for our security. It was the republican joouish coalition, a group heavily funded by republican jewish donors. The owner of the venetian hotel. The foundation plans to refile five years of returns. The nonprofit addressed questions about the foundations donor disclosure practices insisting on transparency and contributions from foreign governments is stronger than ever. In the meantime representative trade gowdy and House Committee are examining 300 of Hillary Clintons emails. They are looking for evidence of security lapses in the days and weeks leading up to the terrorist attack in benghazi libya. Sources tell cnn they have found no quote smoking gun in these 300 email messages. Lets bring in our global correspondent. State Department Plans to release some of these emails publicly but your source has seen at least some of them. What do they say . Well several source wolf are saying you know theres not a lot there there in terms if anyone was looking at great insights on Hillary Clintons actions leading up to benghazi or afterwards. Not that much information in these emails. A lot of them about a third of them are mundane things like scheduling logistic very little talk about security very little talk about benghazi. There is some evidence that secretary clinton and her inner circle were inned in the fall out from benghazi and how it might affect secretary clinton and the state department as the whole. But nothing really indicating that secretary clinton was there was no stand down order, as some republicans charge about the night of benghazi secretary clinton did not try to stop help from getting to the consulate on the ground. Theres an email from the office of senator john mccain the day after the attack one of his staffers even praising secretary clinton for her address to state Department Employees the day after the tragedy and asking her office to convey the fact that senator mccain appreciated those remarks. Theres a mixture of the mundane to tinting but certainly no great insights from that. Very quickly where does the investigation now go . Well they are looking for secretary clinton to testify and theres a little bit of a debate how that will go. Republicans on the committee, representative gowdy really wants to do a private interview with secretary clinton first.
