Frustrating search. Weather continues to play a key role for all of the wrong reasons, brianna. Conditions were said to be better today but the head of the search teams said that they were very very challenging conditions. Waves reported of up to 5 meters. Thats getting on towards 15 feet to give you an idea. Plus rain and very low visibility. Now, this new area the 2,000squaremile most probable area the searchers are going to be using listening equipment, sonar equipment to try to find out what is at the bottom of the seabed there, to map it see if they can find any wreckage and also to listen for the pings from the black boxes or from the locator transmitters. They havent heard anything yet. As you say, they have found a window panel that has been brought to the surface and there have been reports earlier this week that they may have located there was a sonar image of a much bigger object but that hasnt been confirmed since. That much bigger object obviously is the fuselage and searchers think that the fuselage brianna, mainly in tact and it still con takened many of the bodies. So a very frustrating all around but so much so for the families who wait here where i am at the Crisis Center in surabaya for any sort of news about the fate of their loved ones. And so many of them you told us are resigned, really to the fate of their loved ones and so the next step for many of them is burying their loved ones. Now with 30 bodies having been found, only 4 identified how does this process go of identifying these bodies . Reporter well painfully or pain painstakingly slowly. They are very very cautious and careful about identifying correctly the remains of these bodies. They have been in the sea now for several days. A visual identification is becoming obviously more difficult so more and more they are going to be relying on dna. Also on perhaps any distinguishing features. Clothing will play an important part to one of the the first of the victims, one of the identification was a necklace that she was wearing which had her initials on it. They are looking at a range of any sort of digital means they can. But dna really does sort of seem to be the big one. That does take some time. The first body took more than 24 hours to be identified. Now 30 bodies have been retrieved. We were at the naval base where the bodies were being brought and its a very solemn procession that went past our Camera Position ten ambulances bearing the bodies of the passengers and crew on that plane being brought back to this base here. It could be some days maybe two or three, before theyve all been identified. So its going to be slow process and all that the families can do is pray. Maybe, just maybe, theres a miracle that could be told but with each passing hour it becomes so unlikely. Andrew stevens, thank you, in surabaya for us. I want to get more about the search for airasia flight 8501. Im joining by peter goelz and les abend and cnn aviation analyst david soucie. So we have this official, guys in singapore who says it looks like a window panel thats been found. What does this tell you, peter . Well not very much frankly, but they will need to confirm that the panel is actually from the accident aircraft. They can do that if theres an identifying serial number. They certainly can do it by consulting with the airbus people see whether its the right panel. But it really will not tell you a great deal. Its an interior panel. You can see some adhesive on it but other than that the search is going to go on. So les, this is really maybe a clue as to whether other pieces of the plane are . Absolutely. It may everything is part of the puzzle and this if they can find the location of this particular assuming this is part of the airplane if they can find the location where this was where this window was, that might indicate where the plane broke up. Its a lot of forensic information that has to be disseminated. So this interior panel . Yes, thats what it looks like. Does that tell you anything david, that it looks like its an interior panel . Well not much. Because youd have to determine where it was found in relation to the other debris to determine whether it came apart in the air or in the water. This particular panel is not a reliable piece of information because its extremely light. Its very light, its buoyant, it has a nonporous materials in it. So just a gust of wind could pick it up off of the debris area and blow it for miles in one direction or the other. So this isnt something that typically, even if we knew where it was, would give us a lot of clues as to where the main area of the aircraft is. Okay. So what about this 1500 square nautical mile area david, that were talking about . What might lead searchers to be looking just in this spot now . Well theres some evidence obviously theyve done drift analysis from what they have found and have worked their way backwards to that. The other thing is in these other areas, they have exhausted those. They looked and there was not surface debris. But i would suspect that is probably the reason that its narrowed down because they didnt have success in the other areas. So just sort of their excluding other areas based on others it seems . Yes. The bodies that weve been seeing peter, its a grim but they told part of the story perhaps. Three bodies now found. And thats a considerable number compared to what we were talking about yesterday, which was nine but that also leaves 132 bodies missing at that point. An Indonesia Official says three of the bodies were still strapped into a row of seats. We would expect that right . You would expect that and you would expect probably a great number unfortunately, of the victims will still be strapped in their seats and its a terribly difficult task for the divers to be finding this. I mean its just hard work for the recovery teams. And the longer it goes on the tougher it becomes. Its emotionally demanding as well as physically demanding, perhaps more emotionally depand demanding. Lets talk about the flight data recorders here. 24 days left of Battery Power. Thats the expectation, les. Because you have 30 days give or take on this battery that powers the pinger. Could it last even longer . Could it last 40 days . Could it last 20 days . You know, this is a better question probably better suited to dave soucie but any manufactured product probably has some flexibility. So its possible it could last 40 days. I doubt it but the important thing is that the sonar equipment finds if it can find the fuselage or sections of it in the tail of course, that would solve a lot of problems just right there. Okay. So david, i mean what do you think . Do you think that is this even an issue, the Battery Power and the pinger or are you convinced that a lot of debris has been recovered or some debris has been recovered that eventually this is going to be found the fuselage will be found by searchers pretty quickly . Its still a very important piece because of the fact that even once they find the main part of the aircraft or the tail of the aircraft these boxes are twisted and mangled in amongst all of that metal could be under the dirt. Theres a number of places that box could disappear to behind rocks. So the purpose of that underwater locator pin gerger, is for primary focus. We use it to try to find the basic area and they may be doing a little bit of that now. However, its very imperative and its probable that they will not be able to get down there due to the weather and actually retrieve these boxes before that 25 days which is why we pushed so hard to make these 90day batteries which still have not been implemented in most of these fleets. Sure. And any time were talking about making changes, it takes so long to make those kind of changes. Doesnt it peter . Its frustrating. Its frustrating for investigators and forth public to understand why such a simple issue, why extending it yobdbeyond 30 days hasnt been done. You have to turn your attention to the Civil Aviation organization and we need to encourage the carriers to do it on their own. Maybe they will after this year. Final question to you, les, theres an expert in indonesia who is saying that evidence is pointing towards a successful water landing and thats why the elt, the Emergency Landing transmitter didnt go off. He says the plane likely sunk in the high seas. What do you think about that theory . We have discussed this on a few other segments before but the elt is mostly located towards the back of the airplane and designed for an impact on land. On land. When it gets immersed in water, the antenna gets soaked and doesnt emit a signal. There are some elts sometimes in the rafts and these rafts are now immersed potentially in the fuselage and those signals, although activated by water, are their antennas are also underneath the water. So they are not transmitting. They are designed to float and once and water activates them. If they are immersed its not going to happen. Les abend, peter goelz, david soucie thank you. You are going to join me later to discuss the Key Resources that have been helping recover the bodies. More wreckage found and now a total of 30 bodies have been found. Its monsoon season in that part of the world and divers have ham bettered by lifehampering turbulence in the java sea. Paula hancocks is joining me with more. Reporter as you can see preparations are under way for one of the search vessels to head out to the Search Location and try and locate some of those bodies and some of the debris. Some of divers are going to be on board and they have been out a couple of times but many of them say they couldnt get into the water because it was simply too dangerous. Today they know they have waves of 4 meters or 40 feet high. One diver said he would basically be giving up his life if he tried to get in the water. They are very frustrated because sometimes they have to just sit and wait and hope for a break in the weather so they can try and bring back more bodies and bring more closure to those distraught families. Paula hancocks cnn indonesia. A top official calls the bad weather in the search zone the biggest obstacle to the search so far. Karen maginnis is in the weather center. It seems like the weather is not i am moving. Any change today . Every day weve watched these huge clusters of thunderstorms wind their way across the java sea. They have seen torrential rainfall. This is monsoon season. There is a seasonal shift of precipitation. Right around 7 Degrees South latitude which is just about this position they can see enormous amounts of rain. Even over the previous few weeks, they were seeing exceptional rainfall given this time of year. Well to have so many vessels in the ocean or on the ocean or in the sky, to have visibility so poor really they want to be able to search they want to be able to give families some closure, they want to be able to find the voice recorders, the black boxes so they can figure out what has happened with this aircraft. Now the area looks fair. The wind is not as gusty as it has been. The water here is only about 100 feet deep. Its like sloshing around in a bathtub. Its very dangerous for anyone who wants to be able to see whats happening below the surface of the water, on top of the water for those divers and certainly for aircraft. But look at this. Going into sunday it appears as if this narrowed down search area is going to fair a little bit better. Maybe remarkably better. Cant rule out thunderstorms. Certainly cant. And in the next 48 hours, there will be some here but hopefully it will lie flat enough for a long enough period of time and well watch these winds taper off that as we go into saturday they can see some of the yellow and orange that starts to disappear. And once we get into some of the blue thats when we know that the winds are going to be between 10 and 15 miles an hour. Big difference than being 25 with some gusts. Yeah. And hopefully that will give the Recovery Efforts some calm and good time there to do their search. Karen maginnis thank you. Are more u. S. Im brianna keilar. Singapores Defense Ministry says searchers have found what resembles a window panel from the plane along with other possible wreckage. Finding the fuselage and the planes black boxes, that is just crucial to figuring out what caused the crash. The search now focused on an area covering about 2,000 square miles. Thats about the size of delaware a little under the size of delaware. And officials believe that this is the most probable area where the wreckage is located. Crews have now recovered the bodies of 30 victims. So far only four of the victims have been identified. Lets get more now on the new developments in the search for flight 8501. Im joined by cnn aviation analyst david soucie. We have aviation analyst les be abend and contributing editor to flying magazine and former ntsb managing director peter goelz. I want to ask all of you at this point as we are days into this now. Peter, starting with you, what do you think at this point brought the plane down . Is there anything that you can say conclusively or rule out . You have some tantalizing hints. Clearly the weather is where we are focused on. And the pilots interaction with their aircraft in difficult weather. But beyond that, you. Caller really cant tell. The idea that the plane did a dramatic climb, radar notoriously is unreliable for recording that kind of behavior in a plane. So we just dont know. But were going to find out. Even that radar that were talking about, that the sunday morning herald repeated . If it was mode s, still, its an extraordinary climb. Speak to that a little bit, also because the information this was information that was leaked that was given to the Sydney Morning Herald. It talks about ground speed but we dont have the indicated air speed. The ground speed is the net of the wind the weather and obviously the speed of the plane. So we dont have the indicated air speed, right . Yeah. And i agree with everything that peter indicated. Its tantalizing clues that we have now but thats exactly correct. The mode s transponder gives more information but theres a time delay so we really dont know what that was what that ground speed was or that air speed on the radar was all about. Theres a difference like you indicated, between what the airplane senses and the ground speed. So its all subject to possible dis discrepancies. The climb seems extraordinary. They could have gone through a thunderstorm that causes a lot of updrafts in addition to downdrafts. So weather does seem to be related but, once again, we cant rule out anything. And i think its important to determine flight breakup, which is a possibility, or a breakup once there was an impact with the water. What do you think, david . I think i agree with les and peter. I believe there is one thing that we can probably rule out, most likely is the fact that the aircraft broke up so we dont know whether it was in the air or on impact but i think we can rule out the fact that a successful ditching attempt had been made or even an unsuccessful ditching attempt because and that subsequently the aircraft sunk after the fact. We wouldnt be seeing this type of debris we wouldnt be seeing bodies especially those that are in seats. So i think thats the one thing that we may be able to rule out or that investigators are ruling out right now. Okay. And then lets take a look at how the unfortunate thing is that we have something to compare this to in the region as well the flight of mh370 in march. But lets look at how we think the indonesian government is handling this. What do you think, david . Well i believe that they are doing an excellent job. As far as i can tell they are way ahead of what i would have expected in this type of environment, particularly dealing with the weather that they have. But its interesting to me too, that the control of information has been very wellhandled. Weve had very little misinformation. Theres been some here and there as far as the location from the initial or the loss of the aircraft but i think in general they are doing a very good job of not putting out any information thats thats erroneous or that could be used in ways that could lead for main and difficulty for the families. Are you seeing that les . Yeah. It seems to me that they are following the protocol of the accident investigation. Im certain the way things are the information is being disseminated that theres got to be a goto involved with this and the various parties of the investigation, i think that this is being handled apropropriately. For the black box, peter, do you think it should go to indonesia . Well i guess i mean the data from the black box. Who should be in charge of analyzing that . Well the indonesians will be in charge of where it goes and theyll oversee the analysis. The french will obviously participate as will the United States. The easiest way to do it would probably be to fly it to australia. Its within a days flight. Canbera has a great flight laboratory. If need be it could go to france. I would think it would go to australia because they want to get the data downloaded as soon as possible under indonesian supervision. Peter goelz, thank you so much. David soucie appreciate you being with us. Les abend, thank you. Well be answering viewer questions in just a few minutes and, among the passengers on that airasia flight, 46 members a single church. Coming up our panel of experts will answer your questions about the crash of airasia flight 8501. Plus captain Sully Sullenberger talks about the training that pilots get or dont get to handle inair emergencies. Among the theories being proposed in the crash of airasia flight 8501 is that the jet stalled in flight. Experts say the plane could have been flying too slow or climbing too steeply in the bad weather. In that last critical period the pilot would have had just seconds to react. I spoke with captain Sully Sullenberger who landed his crippled jet on the hudson five years ago in what has become known as the miracle on the hudson. I asked what a pilot should do if a plane loses power or stalls. First, you take control of the airplane and you learn to find out what you can trust and what you cant. If you have visual references if its daylight if its clear of clouds you use the natural horizon. In fact you might not know that most Airline Pilots have never stalled an airliner certainly not intentionally. And our flight simulators currently are not programmed to be able to practice a full stall of an airliner in the flight simulator. Ive had a chance to go to the airbus factory and under controlled conditions actually stalled the airplane, something that few Airline Pilots have had a chance to do. But an inadvertent stall at a High Altitude you would have to respond very quickly. Youd have to correctly solve the problem youve never faced in reality before and get one chance to do it right. So thats why recent improvements in the safety rules have required that Going Forward we begin to practice doing that. That makes total sense. Im imagining when you went through that in france it was probably clear skies, very unusual circumstances that you had the chance to do that. Yes. But youre in clear skies. What did it feel like and what did you have to do to regain control . Well again, it was in clear skies with flight instrumentation more than most airplanes have with flight engineers monitoring your progress as well as a test pilot in the other pilot seat. But it really was not a violent event at all. There was some shaking, some vibration as to turbulence of the air flow over the wings began to occur as the air flow is being disrupted as the angle of the against the wings was too great and then you could feel it settling as you begin to lose lift and then you would quickly and responsibly begin lowering the nose and increasing thrust to recover. But like i said a sudden unexpected stall in cloud in an unusual altitude would be a very different occurrence and much more challenging and if it was not correctly handled very quickly, it could lead to loss of control of the airplane. Captain Sully Sullenberger there on the need for quick and Decisive Action in the event of a stall. You have to fix a problem youve never experienced and you have one chance to do it. You can see how difficult that would be. I want to get to some of the questions that were getting from viewers now. A lot of you are asking really good questions about this crash and this investigation. I want our Panel Members to answer those questions for you. We have cnn aviation analyst david soucie meteorologist Karen Maginnis and aviation analyst and former ntsb managing director peter goelz. David, i want to start with you. Warren friedman is asking if communication is the last thing a pilot would do because it is aviate navigate communicate, why not just have a mayday button they could push to communicate danger . Well there actually is one of those buttons. Most aircraft have an adsb type thing or its not one button but you can squawk a specific code on the mode s trans responderponder. If youre in the mountains and driving your car and on the way to meet the family and youre sliding because you have come over the hill and its all ice and you lose control of the car, you look like youre going to go off the edge youre sliding down the hill it wouldnt be something that anyone could help you with but you so would the instinctive thing to do to pick up the cell phone and call somebody and say, hey, im about to go off the road here maybe you should call a tow truck for me . I know thats a way oversimplification of what went on here but that gives you a glimpse into the mind of what might be going through a pilot at that time and if they cant help me what am i supposed to do i into he had to recover from this stall ordeal with the aircraft itself. That gives you a little insight into what is going on with the cockpit. You deal with the problem at hand. That makes sense. Karen, we have a weather question for you. This comes from steven. He wants to know are thunderstorm updrafts Strong Enough to lift a heavy plane like airasia upwards several thousand feet . And weve learned from the mode s data that was provided by the Sydney Morning Herald that thats what it appears to have done. Is this weather lifting the plane or would this be the pilot lifting the plane . Well if you remember the pilot did request a deviation from 32,000 feet to 38,000 feet. But lets discuss the dynamics of what they may have encountered here. This is monsoon season. We have these thunderstorm clusters perhaps a pilot was looking to get into some calmer air, although the tops of the thunderstorms were running 50 to 53,000 feet. Could he go around . The best option. I have flown small, light aircraft. You get near a thunderstorm you are going to be bounced around. Large aircraft as weve heard time and again, are built to withstand all of this jostling. Passengers dont like it. So they try to minimize that. But we recently you may remember back near the beginning of the year a united flight was going from denver to billings montana, and they hit such severe turbulence it was if the bottom of the plane was punched. There were flight there was a passenger who was not belted in who was thrown around in the aircraft. So even though an aircraft can take it and there are maneuvers that pilots can take theres very violent and stressful events that take place on airplanes that can be very jolting. Is it always up . It could be up. Is it down . Well we know from delta aircraft in 1985 that was a microburst a different sort of force on that aircraft. I hit a down draft once only once and it was the scariest flying experience i ever had. It was like we fell out of the sky and then were caught and let me tell you, i was i just wasnt sure. Im not going to lie. Peter, this is a question four. Williams jones is asking about hail. Because were talking about in some of these, if the weather conditions were right, golf ball size hail and in the extreme case maybe even baseball size hail. Could hail break the windshield and cause explosive decompression . It would not be able to break the wind healed. Highly unlikely. These are laminated, very strong heated. It can shatter it and cause visibility problems. Hail has been known to knock the nose cone off planes to seriously damage the engines, but to puncture the windshield highly unlikely. So the bigger concern would be the engine then right . What are you looking at there with hail in the engine . You could dump enough stuff into the engine to smother it. And lose power in one or both engines. And thats happened in severe thunderstorms. And thats something that pilots again, train for and are aware of. Then you would be dealing with sort of a miracle on the hudson situation but in terrible weather, terrible turbulence and with novi sue all stimuli to navigate. Not carrying over into the first trading day of 2015. Right now the dow down about 54 points. And the u. S. And the antiisis collings are continuing their air strikes against militant positions in syria and iraq. Hundreds of american Ground Troops acting as advisors close to the fighting in iraqs anbar province. Joining me is the managing editor of courts. Bobby, thanks for being with us. Just you know this is sort of the this is the thing that americans dont want the thing that politicians wont commit to know boots on the ground. They say no combat boots on the ground for u. S. Forces. But, you know is that really the case and what would it really take to get u. S. Ground forces involved . Well its always been very misleading. There are combat troops in iraq. They are in the air. The American Air Force is running multiple Bombing Missions against isis. And the american there are 2,000 american soldiers on the ground. That number will increase to 3,000. Presumably they are all wearing boots. They are supposedly there only in an advisory or training capacity but many of them are very close to the fighting especially in anbar, west of baghdad. There are 300 trainers in a small military base and that base is surrounded pretty much by isis. Its taking a lot of fire and it gives you a sense of how dangerous it is there that when american advisors fly in and out of the base they do it in the cover of darkness in helicopters. So they are constantly in harms way and one imagines that should heaven forbid but should isis come close to the base or actually be able to attack it directly with isis boots on the ground and presumably the American Forces were there will have to respond directly not simply be guiding or assisting the iraqi forces. There are two fronts in this really its one stretching iraq to syria, but what do you consider really the most important front, iraq or syria . Well the iraqi front is the one americans will pay much more attention to because of the history. We have with that country but also because there are american boots on the ground. In syria there are not directly any American Forces on the ground nor is there any discussion of having that but isis is much bigger in syria. It controls much greater territory. Strategically its a much more important place. Isis headquarters their capital is in syria. But its going to be sort of a long term operation step by step and the first step the place where the u. S. Led collings against isis the place where they have the greatest hope or likelihood of success is iraq because thats where you have a local government that is in support of the ecology where as of course in syria the local government Bashar Al Assad is fighting a separate civil war within its country. Much more complicated. Iraq as dangerous as it is a simpler case. I want to take the long view the white house admitting that the fight against isis is going to take years. So were here at the beginning of 2015. What does this year hold for us in this fight against isis . Well, the crucial thing is can these antiisis force, the Iraq Iraqi Forces and western allies take military back. The first half of 2014 was a story of how isis took a lot of territory in iraq up to about a third of the country, including some very important large cities. And towards the end of 2014 isis advance stopped essentially and thats good news. But in 2015 the big question is can they be pushed back can some of that territory be regained. Yeah that is a very big question and i guess well be talking this Time Next Year to see the answer to that. Thank you so much. That is it for me. Ill be back at 5 00 eastern on the situation room.
