Families rely on schools for meals for their kids. The longterm Public Education system is still unclear. But covid19 is absolutely magnified the problems we heard about when making this episode. Thank you. What grade are you in. 4th. Do you like 4th grade . Mmhmm. I like your glasses. I like yours, too. You want to try these on in. Im good. What are your favorite subjects . Reading, math, science. I like her, she makes learning fun. Cute kids, amazing teachers. Thats what this episode is about. Its not schools or achievement gap . Nope, why would we talk about that. I dont think people understand how challenging our profession is. To go with the flow. I got to be very patient. Back in my day we called like lunch ladies. You know. You know. No. Notes notes i used to hate lebron james. Im a jordan guy. I live in the bay area. So i used to hate him. Then he went and did this. Lebron james opening the i Promise School in his hometown. He says opening this school may be the greatest moment of his life. Thats when i realized maybe i just sports hate him. For years i have known that Public Schools need help. I never realized it needed to come in the form of a generational athlete. Why is that . What do schools that dont have lebron do . Right now, there are 50. 8 Million Students enrolled in u. S. Public schools. But those schools are not created equal. Because the u. S. Is one of the only developed nations to rely heavily on local property taxes to fund them. So, this means a kid that lives in an economically depressed area gets less money and fewer resources than a kid who lives in a more affluent area. Which means a kid that needs more uses less. Aka, the american way. Public School Funding all across the u. S. Comes from a combination of primarily state and local plus federal resources. Some states are poorer than others. Some cities are poorer within those states. Kids, thats called inequity. Dont get me wrong, money doesnt fix everything in schools. Because the u. S. Literally sprinkled racism all over our society. Which creates a gap and that gap remains no matter how much cash you drop on it. So im headed to ohio. East cleveland and Shaker Heights to see what a couple Public Schools that dont have lebron are doing to close that gap. Jonathan thomas is a bus monitor and a paraprofessional at Mayfair Elementary School in East Cleveland district. The kids writing the bus, hes the First Contact with school in the morning. Basically when we go there on friday we basically get to have free time. My thing is dinosaur, all as to play time outside to the park and we wont be hungry and saw this light and so. He needs his own show. It doesnt matter how much money your school has. If you are hungry, your teacher cant be interesting enough. School work cant be easy enough. The odds of achieving an above average test score can be twice as high for students who eat breakfast that is those who dont, Public Schools play a crucial role in feeding kid. The East Cleveland School District provides breakfast and lunch to all students. Is the food good . Is the breakfast good . Yeah, its really good. Oh, thats orange juice . Yeah. Okay. You want this . You will sit there let that orange juice just hang out, you know. I got a question. What is your favorite part of life . I have a job where i can travel around and talk to people and learn new things about everybody. Thats my favorite part of life. And me. And oh, yes, of course. And me. I got five words to say. Five word. Okay. Im going to count them. One. No, you said five words, ill count your five word. . One, two, three, four, five. Okay. According to 24 7 wall street, East Cleveland is one of the most impoverished towns in america. Poverty is checked to a wide range of skills, lack of heat, lack of sleep, working three jobs. All of that stuff is with a kid going to school. These teachers track the bad stuff first thing in the morning to make their way to learning. Who am i kidding . I can use some cleared out, too. Is that your computer . Oh. I want to first say congratulations to my 1st graders. 100 of the 1st graders students its time for a mindful moment with some music. Put your feet flat on the floor. Put your arms relax ltd. At your desk. Lets listen and relax. Take a deep breath in. Exhale. The main purpose of it is for them to clear their minds and get into the learning zone. Reporter they have been teaching in the district for 27 years. So you give them a little bit of a buffer . Right, exactly. It kind of builds our classroom environment and gets the kid comfortable with each opts and with us and knowing that there the a safe place to share things. I want you to think about one thing that, if there was one thing you could change that has happened so far from the time you woke up until right now, what would it be and tell me why. To help the kids get started. A talking stick is passed around. Id say change from when i went to sleep and my brother to stop snatching the covers off me. Because i be cold. I want my mom to have one job to come home early. My sister wakes me up at 7 00. I would have woke up my na na, we had to come to school at 8 30. She celeste in until 8 28. So i had to walk to school. One thing i changed i wouldnt have spilled on my pants right here. One of the things we noticed is that sometimes the kids just have something to say. When you start teaching, what is on their mind is what they have to say to you. So i think we can do the best lesson on the kids mind, i need to tell you this so its all about letting them clear their minds so that theyre ready for what we have to offer. You walk around with a badge, are you like, yeah, thats me. Reporter how does it make you feel differently about Police Officers and the Law Enforcement . The police pull you over, they dont tell you why. In this class, i know the law and how to get out of that situation. You have to protect yourself. The best way to do that is with knowledge. Reporter its clear the students are working hard here. But this is not the hard work we normally think about when we think about high school. On the one hand its great, these kids can learn skills that get them jobs that pay way more than minimum wage in high school. I hope some are able to save money for dream professions in college. I had to do my own hair sentence i was in the mid20s. Is that the style you have been doing . Reporter for me. Okay. Reporter Anthony Abraham jack is an assistant professor at the Harvard Education school of education author of the privilege poor how elite colleges are failing students. To understand students, you have to know where they come from. I. To know where a zip code can tell you where a child can end up. We need to make sure we understand not just the differences between students test scores all that kind of stuff. We understand how inequality works and how its localized in neighborhood schools. How is that related to george Harvard Middle School . A assistant principal saw me fooling around with my students and said you dont have a potential to become a harvardite. They create an award for the best student in the year 8th grade year because of things i did, she had to hand it to me. That moment stuck with me because i felt like there was a tally. If i didnt make it would be evidence that she was right. The fact that someone in Public Education is funded by a tax base thats hyper localized yet we know the way in which Economic Opportunity was highly racialized. We know the way segregation works. It has a Ripple Effect where you live and who are your neighbors . So one of the ways we can think about is ultsenate education. To me it feels we shouldnt have Public School disparity. Thats fine. It shouldnt be having a good school and a bad school. You know what i mean . We see funding, its not just who is going there, what do their parents do . The way in which these weird structured districts. Jerry commanders. The neighborhood looks like this. Like a snake. What would happen if you say you know what, we are no longer going to do this hyperlocalized ways of funding schools, everything goes into a pot. Each school will get something equal . Education reform, we think about in an experimental way. Oh, can this new trick work . Can this thing who, . We dont need to experiment. We need to get serous of reforming it so we can actually work on a lot of these problems. One thing thats true, we have a lot of love and respect for teachers, because, you know, a good teach kerr change your life. You can see the difference a teacher can make, how hard it is, how thankless it is. You go, teachers strike, they just want more money. First of all, they are asking for things that help kids, smaller class sizes, safer schools, medical staff. Why does a teacher have to be noble . You aint noble. Every teacher ive ever known goes above and beyond for their schools. Monique davis is no different so she probably needs to make her long day longer is a visit from me. Well, hey. Hi. This is my classroom. Oh my goodness. Is that a dog . It is. I feel like your animatronnics. I ate him. I have students sw intellectual capabilities. They are more than five years below the grade level academically. We are working on life skills. Math that you can use in every day life. How long have you been teaching . This is my 27th year. Really . I have known a lot of teachers in my life at all kind of schools, one thing is consistent. They always go into their pockets. Oh, yeah. To support their classrooms. Yes. Everything you see over there, i bought it. The average person who maybe doesnt have kids in school sees teachers and go, man, they got it easy. Work starts at 8 00. They get there at 7 55. Its over at 3 00. They get to go home. Beat the traffic. I rarely make it home before it gets dork outside. Really . Most of us stay longer or come earlier to meet the needs of our kids. Reporter the East Cleveland School District receives 521 hrks 500. Food can take up 30to40 of the budget. If the school has fewer needs, they can spend more on student education and enrichment. This is made worse by the fact that shaw high is operating at onethenth of its capacity. That means it costs more to educate fewer kids in such a large building. That light bill is 90 empty. My colleagues and i like teachers in low income communities, we saw students go without a lot of arts and field trips and science equipment. I figured there were people out there who want to help teachers like us. If they can see where their money is going. Reporter yen one on twitter, they help k through 12 peoples find supplies and projects that School Districts cant or wont provide. Its the brainchild of an exteacher charles best. The secret sauce is you are not donating to a teacher or a school, the secret sauce is i like that book, i want people to have that book. Yes. I used to play you the ba. You can search for your favorite author, the hobby you are pursuing. Reporter every teacher heard of it. Oprah discovered what we were up to in 2003. Nice of you to take pity on me. You talked to oprah. No way. I think there are a lot of crowd funding sites. I think there is something about the fact that you know this has been vetted through this process. You can see whats happening. Authenticate each project. Reporter then when its funded, we dont get the teacher cash. We buy the books and have them delivered. Were paying the bus company thats taking the kids on the field trip. Reporter there the a common refrain, how come tax dollars arent getting teachers what they need . There has to be another way. Im trying to put you out of work is what i want to do. You know where we want to be put out of work is half the projects that ask for fundamental basic stuff that is a bit of an injustice. The people that give to projects on our site, 60 say that the experience on our site has made them more interested in proving the system, itself. That can be more energizing than reading statistics in a nub about school under funding. Reporter reporter in hollywood, there the a history of white people safe harboring Public Schools so who plays you in the movie, matt damon or Leonardo Dicaprio . Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Ask your doctor about eliquis. And if your ability to afford. Your medication has changed, we want to help. Your medication has changed, when i wake up in the morning, im black. Throughout my day, im black. When i go to bed, im still black. I thought it had to be thick to protect. But new always discreet is made differently. With ultrathin layers that turn liquid to gel and lock it inside. For protection i barely feel. New always discreet. Shaker heights is another suburb of cleveland. Its about five hours away. You can tell from the trees it aint East Cleveland anymore. An affluent community, Shaker Heights was created by the swearingen brothers as a utopian escape from the city. When black folks started to move into the area, it looked like Shaker Heights was about the same, its East Cleveland. When a bomb exploded, a new black resident, the Community Association came together and worked hard to integrate the city and then the schools. Voluntary bussing followed. Today the district is 50 black and 30 white. Over the years, homeowners voted for extra property tax levies to support their schools. If the community is known by the schools it keeps, by the look of it, this is doing just fine. Racism. I moved around a lot as a kid. Me and my mom did. She was a black lady with opinions. So i went to all kind of schools, like a lot of Public Schools, private schools. Consequently, i had wildly different experiences, so i would be in like a private school where i was basically like an average student and i would go to like Public School and i was suddenly like a gifted student. So i was always aware, this is like im not changing. The system is changing. I remember one time i was in a check Catholic School in mobile, lam alabama which is on track one. Ah, launch time in the senior lounge. The smell of school lunch makes us pherimones. I dont miss it. Are off having a good time . Yeah. Do you know who i am . I looked you up five second ago. You are a senior, you are in the senior lounge. Thats a friends shirt you are wearing . Yes, i like old tv shows. You like old tv shows . Yeah. Like those old classics . Okay. So tell me about life here at the school . Well, i love it. I mean, its cool, im trying to get in and get out. A lot of times just trying to enjoy. What classes are you takeing . Im in enviro. I was in eurasia, i take criminology. I know there is core classes. Honors classes. Yeah. If are you bored. I dont want to be bored. I want to get my work done. I talk about astronomy, there is a planetarium. In the school . Thats cool. Would you recommend people to come to this high school . Yeah. We get an education. Just like the people in here. Were working on integrating people. Diversity is we are one of the most diverse schools there is. I think there can be more inclusion with the races. You look around the car teruya, there is the black kids sit here. The white kids sit over there. Our school tries to organize activities that promotes interaction with different people. Scores are our big of that. A student Race Relations. Everyone wants to be in the Race Relations club . Everyone wants to be in score. Reporter Shaker Heights is continually graping with race relation. Especially in 1997 a report found despite the mix, there was a huge achievement gap between black and white students. They told me i was not good enough. Reporter the majority of white students at shaker high still take higher achieving, advanced placement and i. T. Classes. The Student Group on Race Relations was founded in 1983. They use their free periods to discuss racial inequities and figure out why and how despite the communitys best efforts, they still exist. Are any of you familiar with the Washington Post article . 30 of africanamerican kindergartners are said to be on track. 84 of white kindergartners are set to be on track n. 9th grade, 50 of africanamericanings and 90 of whites do. Lastly 11th graders in one ap or ip course, its 12 for africanamerican students and 68 for white students. No person is innately smarter than someone else, yet this exists. Something to keep in mind is when you do choose your classes in february, it is open enrollment, your guidance counselor, parents or friends might say why are you taking this class . The only response you need to have to give is because i want to. So if we can line up behind this first piece of paper here. Adam read it out loud. Are you in any honors or enriched classes in school . If he says yes, he goes that way. As soon as someone answers the next question, gets to one of these two, the next goes. Reporter the score members gave a flow chart to what is stopping them from taking more rigorous class within theyre opened to everyone. Are you in hasnt no, sir . In school, you sort of had to be sort of an enriched kid to get in there. Not really. What is preventing me from taking those now . Probably the fact that i have three kids. Just really busy. So what is your experiences of school here . My experience with the achievement gap is basically its made classes very i feel very isolated. I felt a really intense pressure to defy expectations. Whose expectations . I usually go in thinking everyone has a low standard for me. How big an issue there is, there isnt enough effort put into it. People need to talk about it mor more. Do you feel the administration, the teachers, are they bothered by it . Do they talk about it . I think. I like your answer, meh. I know teachers have vokable about it. They made sure im aware they care. Im happy i went here. I feel if i went somewhere else i wouldnt have a community that gives us a platform to talk about something this important. I think most people looking at this school from the outside, its nicely man cured, in a nice neighborhood. Its hogwarts. You would imagine if you just got through these doors that everybody is going to be fine. Unless its not true. My mindset was lets make it cool toback demically sound to do what you are supposed to do and elevate. I remember when i was in school. I did feel sometimes like it wasnt cool to be smart. So i certainly understand that pressure sometimes, especially among black men, how do you excel and feel are you a member of the community. The nice thing is even back in 7th and 8th grade, you were kind of being a clown or worried about being cool, you can come here and reset and learn how to be a successful student. I would imagine that from the outside, some people can look at this and think it is what we call respectability politics. You know, the idea we have to behave a certain way to get the approval of looking out for the white man. The fact of the matter is you only have one opportunity to make a first impression. So you can think about how the world should be. You also have to teach them how to get along in the world as it is. Not to say that im not who i am. But i want to be successful and this is what is due as a successful individual. So i guess my last question is, is it too late for me to appl apply . I didnt get my gpa a little bit.
