Im told President Trump received a warm welcome as he arrived for what i assume will be the first of many days of golf here. I want to go to capitol hill where the president s lastminute threats to crucial legislation is clearly putting enormous pressure on lawmakers, especially members of his own republican party. Our Congressional CorrespondentPhil Mattingly is joining us. Phil, republicans have very tough choices to make into the immediate days ahead because the stakes are clearly enormous. Theyre enormous. Due to the economy, the aftershocks of the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdowns but theyre also facing a very real prospect of a bill that they all for the most part voted for. All of a sudden being vetoed by a president that they dont want to break away from. Its been a difficult balancing act since the election. A lot of republicans have tried to figure out how to deal with. Now its coming into clear focus here. The bill itself left washington this evening on its way by airplane down to President Trump. What hes going to do with it when it arrives, the Coronavirus Relief package and the Government Spending bill to keep the government open beyond monday, that is an open question. Even some of the formerly close allies on capitol hill, theyve been telling me over the course of the last 24 hours they have no idea what hes going to do. Thats left democrats to implore the president just to sign the bipartisan bill. This is Christmas Eve. Surely the president of the United States, whether hes in maralago or anyplace else, ought to empathize with the pain and suffering and apprehension and deep angst that the American People are feeling this Christmas Eve and sign this bill. Reporter wolf, i want to underscore one key point here. That is based on everybody im talking to on the capitol hill side of things, theres no alternative. No plan to reopen the bill or address the concerns or reconsider the concerns. Keep in mind how long it took to reach an agreement. More than eight months of stalemated negotiations. Finally a break through. This is the government funding bill as well. The president needs to decide if hes going to sign it. If he doesnt, theres no fall back plan right now. That means an enormous amount but whether or not the u. S. Government stays open past monday. Explain, phil, whats at stake if this covid relief bill fails. Yeah. This is really important because in just two days, on december 26th, two crucial c. A. R. E. S. Act, initial coronavirus stimulus package, unemployment programs will expire. Theyre currently getting bins benefits to 12 or 13 Million People beyond what the states usually provide. Those will expire on december 26th. You have an Eviction Moratorium about to expire as well. Inside this bill or package, nobody said its not perfect, it didnt go far enough. It provided too much money. You obviously have 600 direct payments. You have additional 300 federal unemployment benefit that would go on top of all of these and increasingly important, wolf, 15 increase in food aid and food stamps. When you look at the food pan tris and the lines going into them, you recognize how important that is at this point in time. All of that goes away if the president doesnt sign the bill. I just dont think he really cares. Its not front of mind for him. You can tell hes really fixated on this election and fixated on political retribution and settling old scores, whether its in the form of pardons or in the form of making life difficult for Senate Republicans and House Republicans on capitol hill who have already voted on this bill. What will be even more tragic is if President Trump delays signing this bill only to eventually sign it and delays that relief from coming to americans allowing them not allowing them to go into this Holiday Season with some kind of certainty that they might be able to provide for their families in the coming days. That would really be, i think, a tragic outcome for all of this because as phil laid out, theres really not much of an alternative. He could veto this, but theres no certainty hell get what he wants. He might eventually sign this bill, but if he takes his time doing it just out of spite, i think only the American People will stand to hurt from that. Its interesting, ryan, the president clearly is angry with Republican Leaders in congress, especially the two Top Republicans in the senate, the majority leader Mitch Mcconnell, john thune the number two republican because theyve acknowledged that biden won the election, will be president of the United States. But does he want his legacy to include denying americans their stimulus checks and the Unemployment Benefits, especially around christmas . I mean, just think about that question. The president of the United States is going to veto legislation that is providing a life line to millions of americans as the death counts increasing, and doing it out of personal spite because Republican Leaders just acknowledge the reality of the election. Its sort of an insane situation were watching unfold here. Some of this stuff has become so out of bounds of what normal american politics that i think we dont even realize it anymore. I mean, imagine if someone said that the president of the United States was mad because republicans acknowledged his opponents victory so he was punishing the country by not signing legislation . And at the same time issuing this these series of pardons from republican officials that have, you know, gone through a very, you know, careful Justice Department process, committed crimes that, you know, everyone agrees were prosecuted fairly. So we just see this series of just not taking the presidency seriously at all and, you know, weve still got a long way to go here. God knows what else could happen between now and january 20th. 27 days. Thats going to be a very, very long 27 days. I think youre right. Jeremy, the president s focus seems to be on, a, pardoning his allies, wrapping up pressure on the Vice President and congress to fight the results of the election. Is there any talking him down from this . My suspicion has been he knows he lost, he knows bidens going to be president , theres an opportunity in the final 27 daze to race 100 million in political contributions. Hes raised maybe 200 million, 250 million so far. Its a good way for him to leave with a lot of cash. I think thats certainly a byproduct, wolf, but at this point i think the president has moved on from going through the motions from accepting defeat, telling people that, yes, he understands it still wont work out, he wants to fight, show his supporters he wants to fight versus what weve seen from the president in the last week which seems to be a much more concerted effort to really try desperately, even though its not going to work, its going to be unsuccessful ultimately, to try to overturn the results of the election. That is why we have seen so many of the president s top advisers and people close to him who have gone to the media telling myself and my colleagues that they have grown increasingly alarmed with the president s behave your over the last week. I can tell you, wolf, some people have tried to talk the president off the ledge hes on, steer him away from Sidney Powells and michael flynns. Its not working. Keeping up these practices for just a couple months longer can save our own lives but more importantly can save the lives of our Community Members from covid but also from all that other stuff that we cant take care of effectively if the hospitals are over flowing with sick covid19 patients. As you know, dr. Renney, there are serious concerns about the new variant, new strain of the virus from the u. K. And whether the vaccine thats out there have already been authorized here in the United States, will still be effective. What do we know so far . So far we know that that variant was first identified in late september in the u. K. And it has become one of the dominant strains there. We imagine its here in the u. S. But weve sequenced so few of the genomes and tests that have been done here in the United States. Weve only done 300 sequencing in the last month here. So we imagine that its already here, but we dont know for sure. The studies so far suggest that that strain spreads more easily. Its not more deadly, but more easy to transmit. It means were more likely to have more super spreader events, things like the rose garden, things like that wedding in maine where over 177 people ended up sick and almost a dozen died. Thats the thing that were worried about. We dont see signs yet that the new strains are going to make the vaccine less effective, but the jury is still out and theres a lot of scientists to work hard to get definitive answers over the next few weeks. Were seeing alarming gap right now between how many doses of the new coronavirus vaccines are being delivered to the states out there and how many people actually are getting the shots. We have a lot of seniors and we plan to begin with our local hospital to start dosing and providing the first vaccines to our seniors in our congress grey gant communities as early as monday morning as we repurpose our trollies to bring seniors to the local hospital to get their doses of pfizer or moderna. Do you have to be a resident of miami beach to get a vaccine . No, we couldnt do that. In fact, a lot of the other hospitals will probably follow suit later next week or beyond, because i think we were the first im getting a lot of calls from people asking that question. Were giving it to folks 75 and over first. The hospital makes that decision based on federal guidelines and the governors executive order. Theyve decided 75 and older will be the first group. Then theyll move it down to 65 and older when they complete that. Theyll begin their dosing as well. I think its happening a little bit sporadically around the county. Our county is a hot spot so its important we get the vaccine out to senior residents. Do you agree with the florida governor, Ron Desantiss plan, to prioritize seniors ahead of essential workers who may be way younger, in their 20s, 30s or whatever breaking with the cdcs recommendation . Yeah. I think weve got to get our senior residents first because theyre the ones who have been really look, theyve been hospitalized in much greater numbers. Obviously the deaths have been highest in those communities. I dont think its bad or wrong to do it necessarily that way. What he needs to do is tell the rest of the community that they need to stop the spread of the virus. We cant get cocky about this. We cant let our guard down right now. We have 13,000 cases in florida. We havent seen that number since july with 121 deaths in the state of florida and over 4100 deaths in my county. The virus is here. Killing people. Putting them in the hospital. Even though we want to protect our most vulnerable, we need to stop the spread of the virus in the next few months especially. I checked, as i do every day, with Johns Hopkins university. Yesterday alone, just one day, 3359 deaths from covid in the United States. 3359 in one day. Thats the third highest. Mothers and fathers, brothers and systems. The president is down now in palm beach, in florida, spent the day golfing. Before he left d. C. He hinted he might veto this desperately needed covid relief bill. What will that mean for folks where you are who are relying on these critical benefits . Its hard to explain the amount of trauma that would be placed over the trauma thats already there. Its like a whole nother set of problems.
