All eyes are pushing the bill. Reporter will they or wont they green light that moderna vaccine. If they do green light it, millions of more americans could be vaccinated, and with the situation going from bad to worse, the time is now. The United States seeing its darkest days since the pandemic began. But more help is likely on the way. The fda could recommend emergency use authorization of modernas Coronavirus Vaccine at any time now. The cdc is expected to discuss distribution plans for modernas vaccine over the weekend. We likely will see shots in the arm by the early part of next week. I would hope monday or tuesday. Reporter those shots in the arm cant come soon enough. Deaths reported thursday, 30,270. Theyre predicting 500,000 deaths by april. All eyes are on california which is in a gruesome predicament. L. A. Countys Health Department says on average two people are dying from covid19 every hour. And there are zero icu beds left in southern california. The director of the l. A. County Health Department says their hospitals are under siege. The vaccines are in high demand. Today Vice President mike pence and Surgeon General dr. Jerome adams got their first dose for all the public to see. The Surgeon General is doing his part to encourage people of color to get vaccinated. As the u. S. Surgeon general and a black man, i am equally aware of the symbolic significance of my vaccination today. Reporter the vaccine rollout also getting some help from pharmacy chains walgreens and cvs. Theyre expected to help vaccinate millions of residents in Nursing Homes and longterm care facilities. But what about pfizers Vaccine Distribution . Health officials across the country are confused after multiple states were told by the federal government to expect fewer doses of pfizers covid19 vaccine than initially promised. Its not clear to us why the shipment amounts have been adjusted. Were certainly frustrated that we wont be receiving the amount that we expected in the first wave. Reporter a reason for the delay wasnt given, though pfizer released a statement thursday saying they have millions of doses in their warehouses but no shipping instructions. And we are just getting word, wolf, of a developing situation in alaska. A third case of an anaphylactic reaction after the vaccine was given to a woman in fairbanks. She was taken to a hospital. She was released six hours later. These are typical symptoms of an analy analyphilactic reaction. The woman said she still would have taken this vaccine. Thank you very much. The house just passed a stopgap bill to keep the government open two more days as negotiations continue. It now goes to the senate where its fate is unclear as we speak. Were joined now by a democrat of hawaii, a key in the armed committee. How important is it that the government desperately needs a deal on the covid relief package . The house just passed the twoday cr to keep the government running, and as of right now, im told that no senator will object to that cr, so that is good news because earlier there might have been an objection raised. But as of right this moment, there will not be an objection, so we can continue to negotiate on this emergency relief bill which is so, so needed by all of our people. Thats encouraging to know the government is not going to shut down. Right now the government needs to work and get the job done. As you know, congress has had months and months to reach an agreement. There are millions of americans who are now in poverty who werent in poverty. There are long lines just to get food. Its hard to believe whats going on in the United States right now. Why did it take so long to get to this point . Very simply, but tragically, its Mitch Mcconnell who has sat on the heroes act that was passed by the house on 3 trillion for emergency for this kind of relief for our people. He sat on it for six months and he didnt even negotiate on it at all, and its only in the last several weeks that members of the republican and Democratic Party senators got together, and that is why we now have a bipartisan bill as a basis. But up to that point, he refused. In fact, he said, well, let the states and counties declare bankruptcy. Thats one of the first things he said when we were confronted with the house bill. He said, well, im not going to do anything. Then he came up with a 500 billion deal that had actually no input from the democrats. I dont believe were at the point excuse me for interrupting, but what needs to happen right now . It doesnt like there will be any aid to state and local governments. The republicans are giving up on their proposal for immunity for corporations who are struggling right now, a lot of businesses are struggling right now. What needs to happen right now in order to get a deal . When we set aside the two major rulbones of contention, a you mentioned, the help for state and local governments and liability, then what was added was direct payments to people, so that is a huge help, 600 of direct payments similar to the 1200 that have been in a previous bill. Well, i think that is one of the major new things thats being added to, in my view, take the place of the fact that there is no assistance for the state and local governments. Already over 1 million state and federal workers across our country have been furloughed because state and local governments are in such deep financial trouble as a result of this pandemic. But we need to move ahead, and the bill will have, i hope, these direct payments. It will have additional Unemployment Insurance benefits, it will have Additional Support for small businesses, education, rent relief, et cetera. So i am very hopeful that within the next day or two, welcome to an agreement minus the two major bones of contention. We will deal with those at a later time. I know you guys are close. Lets hope you get a deal. At least something is better tha than, obviously, nothing. The Biden Administration will have a lot to do with economic reform. We didnt get to the cyberattack, but the president s silence on this is deafening. Lets discuss with a former cia director john brennan. Hes the author of the bestselling book undauntcolo i dont know if you heard, but we were told the cyberattacks could be like pearl harbor. Do you agree with that . We need to try to make sure we can mitigate that damage, first and foremost, and figure out how the russians were able to penetrate the systems and then take appropriate actions in response. But its not like it was a physical attack that led to thousands of deaths. But this is the russian collection activities that are ongoing on a regular basis, and the United States networks are the primary target, particularly of the spr, which is the rough equivalent of the fca. If the russians did this, would they do it with significant hacking, if you will, or would they have an insider who could help them at a federal agency or private enterprise that deals with cyberattacks. At least according to the media reports weve seen, it apparently was done as a result of automatic update of commercial soflt ware that exists throughout u. S. Government networks as well as the private sector. Its unclear whether the malware by technical means. This is something the cyber experts are doing, they have to do the forensic analysis to understand how the initial penetration was done, what the russians have done in terms of collection, extraction of information, accessing very Sensitive Networks in systems, and then whether or not the russians have left behind any malicious malware that could be activated at some point, possibly to include disabling systems. If they had a real source inside, that would obviously be very, very worrisome as far as the hacking was concerned. But once a hacker in this case is suspected, a russian Hacking Organization gains access to these federal agencies, mr. Brennan. How much damage potentially could they do . They could do a lot of damage. And these are not classified u. S. Government networks, these are unclassified systems and networks that are used by departments and agencies across the government to keep their daily activities running. And so there is just a lot of information that the russians could have access to in terms of the correspondence, communication between people, understanding how different systems operate and work, what are the potential as a ruvulner that they could have hacked. This was a very large hemorrhaging of u. S. Information back to moscow. President trump has yet to say anything really publicly about this cyberattack. How should the u. S. Be responding . Well accident i think its yet another dereliction by President Trump not addressing this at all, he hasnt said a word about it. We need to, again, mitigate the damage, try to understand what happened and take extra protection for our safety. And a lot of Intelligence Services could bring sanctions against russian government officials. It also could include goping. I know that the Biden Administration will try to ensure there is a very strong signal sent to russia that this type of activity will generate an Immediate Response from at least the biden team. Even after privately naming, and he didnt see any kind of government. The cia stayed in its lane. We await fda final approval for a second Coronavirus Vaccine in the United States. Health care workers are already receiving the first vaccine for emergency use, including dr. Sanjay gupta. He got his first dose earlier today in atlanta, and sanjay joins us. It was live on new day this morning. We watched the video. You got the Coronavirus Vaccine. Explain why youre confident in this vaccine and how youre feeling right now. Yeah. First of all, im feeling great. Maybe a little bit of soreness in the arm, not even as bad as what i typically get with a flu shot or something, so i feel fine. It was 7 00 or so this morpning and really no leftover symptoms at all. In terms of confidence, it was the biggest collision in the world. Im a Health Care Worker so theyre vaccinating some 8,000 Health Care Workers over the next few weeks, so theyre doing it as quickly as they can. But ive also been a journalist covering the story, and looking at the original vaccine development, watching the trials progress, interviewing people like the fda commissioner about this, seeing the trial results come in, and feeling like i could make a very informed decision that this vaccine is safe and effective. We decided to do it live on air to sort of demonstrate that confidence. I dont know how much of an impact it will have on people. Il its tough to say with these things, wolf, but we really cast a scientific eye to this for the last year and reached this conclusion. I went ahead and did it and would recommend it to my family, my parents. I just wanted people to know that, wolf. Its so encouraging. I i was watching, and even before you got it, im ready to get the vaccine when my turn comes up. We did learn about a third person in alaska who received what appeared to be an allergic reaction after receiving the pfizer vaccine. All three of these incidents have occurred in alaska, which is a little strange. What can you tell us about this . Were learning more details about this third patient, another Health Care Worker. We can show you some of the symptoms from all these three people now that had these allergic ra allergic reactions. The first and third sounded like true anaphylactic reactions. The second patient may have been anaphylactic but certainly an allergic reaction. They all got epinephrine which is what you do with an anaphylactic reaction. The first two received epinephrine. I tell you this because its good to be transparent about any effects like this, speeespecials this new vaccine is rolling out. Specific allergic reactions are not unusual with vaccines. In fact, with other vaccines maybe one in a Million People do have serious allergic reactions. In this country you would expect hundreds of these types of reactions over time. It is curious, as you point out, wolf, that all three were in alaska. Not all in the same hospital, but im sure it will be an area the investigators are looking into. Im sure it will, too.
