There is a National Majority that is in favor of legal abortions. Even a state like pennsylvania despite all the cheers, theres a 56 majority in favor of legal abortion. Thats not as consistent across the battleground states. A pro choice majority as is support for the Affordable Care act. That is an issue on which democrats hold the high ground in every state. In a state like North Carolina or georgia is much more closely balanced. I think the statement from biden like the statement from harris, and like many of the others we heard. Democrats are going to focus on the threat that barrett poses the fact that a case is coming to the court a week after the election, to the aca, and as a reminder, that was the point of the speer. The single most powerful issue for democrats in the 2018 elections, promising to protect those elections in the aca. The president has made it clear one of the main reasons he wants this nominee to be confirmed, he sees the Supreme Court as playing a role. In deciding the election, should there be a contested election. Now you have democrats who are saying theyre going to push for her to recuse herself if the election outcome does end up in the Supreme Court. Do you think thats necessary . Of course, the president is assuming that the Supreme Court would be helpful to him, he misconceives what the Supreme Courts role was in bush versus gore, it wasnt about the way hes had a months Long Campaign of trying to undermine the integrity of mail in ballots or whether we can have some confidence in the way the votes are tabulated. Their role was far more specific. It was recounting certain ballots versus other ballots. I think he already misunderstands fund amtly what the role of the Supreme Court would be in that case. Its hypocritical to think were going to have nine justices now, when the last president ial election when he was the victor only had eight justices until he was able to have one go under the advisement and consent of mitch mcconnell. He already fundamentally misperceives what the role would be, having said that, his role has been about roe v. Wade as the precedent to overturn. Now hes trying to keep the precedent of bush v. Gore going. The president s message has been to set the stage to dispute the election. Hes gone to far as to say, the only way he loses is if the election is rigged. Hes refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power after the election. What do you think were in for. Hes fueling it with gasoline and throwing matches on it every day. It is possible the time between the election and inauguration could be the most fraught since abraham lincoln. The president not only does he ov overly have an overly expansive view of the Supreme Court. He doesnt understand how difficult the situation becomes with the Democrats Holding the house and maybe the house and senate. Republicans held both chambers of congress at that point. And it limited the democratic options, the capacity of if the president can go to the ultimate nuclear option, to send their own electors to washington that you cant trust the official results, the ability of democrats in the house, to say no to that, if they have the senate to say no to that, it does change the potential for the Supreme Court to wray in here. That may be difficult, the fact that democrats hold the house give them much more leverage than Many Democrats are fearful of at this point as they listen to the president s warnings. I share bidens confidence at least in the idea of their being integrity based Voting Rights here. We did not see at any time, widespread voter fraud. We saw ballots that were mailed to uniform and overseas businesses. On the battlefield. We can get them to voters at this point in time. We saw a process by which you were able to tabulate votes on election day. Whether it be provisional ballots as is the case and other places around the country. I share the optimism that the voters can get it done, and electoralism can function. A post election day tabulation mean a fraudulent election. It has not meant that up until now, why would it be the case now . President trump said so. Maine cdc determined an employee from the center lives with someone who attended the wedding. The virus likely travelled from guest to household member to the maple crest rehab facility. Keep in mind this facility is more than 100 miles away from the venue. This woman did not attend the wedding, but tested positive. It was a selfish act that could have been prevented with a little more humanity and empathy and compassion for others. Our numerous calls to the rehab center were not returned. At the york county jail about 220 miles away from the wedding site, at least 83 cases, including 43 inmates, 19 people that work in the building that houses the jail and some of their family members. Maine cdc traced the outbreak to a jail employee who attended the wedding and brought the virus to work. All this started with someone who was asymptomatic. Prior to the august 7th wedding and reception, there had been no reports of positive cases among those in attendance. The venue Spokesman Says all guests had their temperatures screened. In terms of florida, Central Florida is a really important for the latino, latina vote. You would think it would be a progressive vote because theres so Many Puerto Ricans leaving the island after the hurricane. Theres a lot of antiabortion work right there in terms of the evangelical vote. Thats up for grabs, in terms of the south for the west, for example, we know that Bernie Sanders did really well there, he carried nevada with the latina vote, theres a votes that anxious for a much more progressive radical stance on all kinds of things whether health care to immigration. On the other hand you have latino moderates in texas, who im hearing are concerned that theyre saying that theyre concerned that biden might be too socialist. Its really broad, but what does have to happen is that the Biden Campaign needs to be doing massive outreach in these 38 days, so that the latino voter feels like theyre getting attention, right now i dont think thats the sense they have. Its interesting you say that, because i spoke with don leguizamo recently who said something similar, showing you care to the latino population, latinos are loyal, but you have to show your commitment to them, and theyll be loyal to you. The president is doing pretty well among venezuelan and cuban American Voters in miamidade specifically. Hes embraced dictators around the world, its ridiculous, i think people see very clearly the difference between me and donald trump. You have people who left cuba decades ago, who are in this ptsd reaction, and when they hear this, hes going to take things away from you, they get into that ptsd, and its very difficult. But again, you have to understand that theres another side of the latino electorate that is actually much more supportive of socialist ideas. Because as you started, anna, they got in touch with latina voters. I was talking to latina voters in nevada and south carolina, and they were and texas, we heard from tio verde, door knocking and text messaging. You cant blame the voter. You have to actually go and get that vote. This is transactional, these kinds of politics. Ive been covering politics for several decades and its always the same thing with the Democratic Party and the republican party. Except that maybe this time with the republican party, theyre going after that latino male vote that kind of can identify with an authoritarian stance like interrupt. They can identify with that which frankly is quite worrisome. I have to ask about your book, once i was you, you write about your own familys experience immigrating to the United States in the 1960s, you were just a baby, the youngest of four children. Family separation almost happened to you upon entering the u. S. , that has a scary connection to whats taken place during the trump administration, that was the beginning of your american story. Why did you decide to tell your story now, and what kind of impact do you hope it has . Anna, when i first found out that the story of my arrival, i was already in my 30s, what i thought had happened was that my mother just stood up to an immigration agent who was not being quite nice. It was my mother who calls me in the midst of the crisis of the children being taken when were hearing the voices of those babies and toddlers screaming, and it was my mother who said, my god, i would have been that mother. I said, what are you talking about . She said, you could have been one of these children. That immigration agent tried to take you, the year was 1962, i was in the Dallas Airport arr e arriving with a green card. There was a policy to look at mexicans and their bodies, and if we were considered dirty, we were taken. In this case, they were going to put me into quarantine. My mother stood up and owned her voice, thats what she had, it wasnt that my mom was speaking up, she told me, it was fight or flight. And she said, all i had was my voice. I have to tell you, anna, to discover this i was quite shocked. It was very very sad. And thats one of the reasons why i wanted to tell this story, we all have our arrival stories in this country. Whether it was 50 years ago, 10 years ago, a year ago or 100 years ago. We need to tell these stories with all of the fullness, the sadness, the happiness, the trauma. Ruth bader ginsburg, this jewish intellectual urbanite, who had been appointed to the Supreme Court thrown together by surprise and seated next to Ruth Bader Ginsburgs husband martin who quickly learned of their shared passion. I love music. He got so excited, my wife and i love music. I said, im listening to bachs variations. He said, oh, my god, you have to meet my wife. He called her name across the table. They became fast friends, sharing their love of opera, history and music. Little did i know that would inspire a 17 year relationship around music and ideas. Ideas that sometimes clashed but led to a better understanding between them over issues around race, opportunity, and public policy. The notorious ruth bader ginsburg. The two also shared a personal joke, when would eric the eligible bachelor tie the knot. In her demanding voice, its about time. When eric found his love hannah, ginsburg offered to officiate their wedding. She said what do you mean go to the courthouse . I have the legal right to marry you. As the preparations were made and the excitement was building, ginsburg kept eric in touch of herrion going cancer treatments. Three weeks, daily radiation, with appreciation and love rbg. Eric got a surprising call two days before the scheduled ceremony, she would need to postpone. I was a bit numbed. On the scheduled day of their wedding, eric got a call from a friend. She said, weve lost ruth, and i pulled over on the side of the road and composed myself. It was friday september 18th, the evening was to marry eric and hannah when she died. All the emotions of losing a friend and feeling that at that very hour we would have probably been in the house. Eric and hannah joined hundreds of others at the Supreme Court. At the bronze door we left a single white rose. Eric left struggling to figure out what ginsburg would want him to do next. Im really struggling with where we are right now as a society. The issues of equity in this country, the challenges around race. Eric is determined to take ginsburgs advice, to never give up, always move forward. They also stand as a reminder of a beautiful friendship and a remarkable woman who would only want us to get married, to find the date as soon as we can. And to just get on with it.
