Three other officers charged with aiding and abetting made their First Court Appearance with a bail now set at a minimum of 750. Right now a tenth day of protest is unfolding across so many cities here in the United States and although some city versus cancelled their curfews for tonight. All of this is still very much continuing. Lets start our coverage this hour in minneapolis. Our National Correspondent sara sidener filed this report Amazing Grace reporter at the memorial in minneapolis, George Floyds family took time to mourn. Thats amazing to me that he touched so many peoples hearts. You know, because he had been such in our hearts, you know. Everybody want justice. We want justice for george. Hes going to get it. Hes going to get it. Reporter Historic National demonstrations in floyds name are now well into their tenth day. What happened to floyd happens every day in this country and in every area of american life. Its time for us to stand up if georges name and say get your knee off our necks. Reporter less than a mile from the family memorial, National Guard troops stood watched as three former Police Officer charged with aiding and abetting in floyds death made their First Court Appearance. All three were granted 1 million bail or 750,000 with conditions. Potential key witness. The passenger in floyds car that fatal afternoon says his friend did not resist arrest. Telling the new york times, floyd was from the beginning trying in his humblest form showing he was not resisting. I can hear him pleading, pleaser, officer, whats it all for . We are confident in what we are doing. But history does show there are clear challenges here. Reporter minnesota general says despite the National Outcry it will be an uphill battle to convict the former Police Officers. What i do not believe is one successful prosecution can rectify the hurt and loss that so many people feel. Reporter Minneapolis Police have released 235 pages of highly redacted personnel record of the officers involved in floyds irest. They show derek schiavoen charged with Second Degree murder had 17 misconduct previous charges and was given a suspension and reprimanded for removing a woman from her car. And Alexandre Cheung has an officer for six months. The four held a variety of jobs, cluck working at mcdonalds, home depot and service in the United States army. They face between 10 and 40 years in prison if convicted in floyds killing. I cant breathe. Reporter this as we learned the neck compression used to hold floyd to the ground is nothing now new. Police in sarasota show an officer using his knee. The chief says he was disturbed by the video but that the suspect was resition arrest for Domestic Violence and battery. Similar events also reported in washington and california in recent months. All the more reason some say to make an example out of minneapolis. This is the time we wont stop. We are going to keep going until we change the whole system of justice f. [ inaudible ] reporter and whats happening here and what we have pretty much seen at the peoples memorial, the citizens memorial, the neighborhood memorial where george floyd died the a growing memorial and a memorial that has been very peaceful the whole time, this neighborhood not destroyed, the people of this neighborhood made sure they didnt. They believe it was a mistake. I want to read you a couple of signs. You see a lot of we cant breathe. A badge is not likely to kim this one struck me, there comes a time where silence is betrayal. People are saying if you need to help, you need to speak up. It doesnt matter your color or religion, that is the message from this memorial for the last sen day zbs thank you very much, sara sidner in minneapolis. We are joined by the mayor of minneapolis, st. Paul, its an important day, indeed. You have just come from that Memorial Service for george floyd. What was it like to witness all of this inside and to hear directly from his family . You know, it was joyous. It was sad. It was heart breaking. It was all the things that we know its going to be because we have been to this funeral. We have seen this funeral so many times. We seen it so many times. This has to be the last one. Reverend al sharpton as you heard said that what happened to george floyd happens every day in every aspect of person life. Why do you believe floyds death has led to this National Reckoning . You can see these live pictures coming in, in new york, over the brooklyn bridge. Thousand versus gathered once again for a very peaceful protest. Wolf, we have, as you know well, seen that charges filed against all four of those officers as of yesterday. And you know i think the fact that we had to sit and wonder when such a horrific crime was committed that all of us can look at and say is unacceptable. We had to wonder if charges would even be filed let alone a conviction, that says an enormous amount about our american Justice System. You know, it occurs to me, wolf, that we all care. The world cares about george floyd because of the way he died and more fooem people have died before him. My grandfather and other people can tell you until we worry about how people live. I think thats the challenge. We as a society have to care about how people live. Thats the key to stopping these protests. Its not sending if troops. Its not force. Its not overcoming by force the American People. Its about hearing and listening finally why people are protesting. What are the injustices that are calling people to protest and finally as a country starting to address those . You make a point and the reverend sharpton spoke powerfully like you about every era fighting for justice. They have to fight various things, slavery, jim crowe, voting rights. This is the era to deal with police and criminal justice. He said he believes this time is different. Do you agree . This time has to be different. You know, as i look at the energy in the streets. As i look at the energy in our community. As i look, all around me, you know this energy, this passion, this rage that people have inside of them, you know, my hope, you know, once the Memorial Service is over and once the funeral is over and once weve laid george floyd to rest, once this court case is over. Once were praying for a conviction so we can actually see some value in their, once thats over, our passion for justice, our packs for this fight and our position to make sure we learn a lesson and prevent this from happening again will continue. We cannot stand down. We cannot be satisfied with beautiful Memorial Services. We cannot be satisfied with beautiful funerals. This has to be about Decisive Action that is so much bigger than convicting four officers. You know, don lemon. She with us as he has been over the past few days. I know you have a question for the mayor right now. I know you watch this Memorial Service very, very closely. What also stood out to you . I did watch very closely and what stood out to me was that when everyone and the reverend al sharpton talked about how this will be different. Right. You hear the mayor saying he hopes this will be different. Listen, im optimistic and i hope. But i am holding the same hope bracing myself just in case it doesnt. Just as we do with those officer, just in case a conviction does not happen. Just in case there is a change. Because i had been sitting here for far too many of these funerals an these conversations with you, wolf, and other folks around the country and on this new yorker saying, well, this time is going to be different. We need to have a conversation about this change this do that. Nothing ever changes, here we are, you know, year after year with another george floyd or someone who has lost their lives, life at the hands of a Police Officer or some other, Something Else thats happened in our society. And so i am hopeful that this, some change is going to be here, but what i found was, what my take away from this was that the message, i was okay receiving the message. I think that people around the country watching especially some white folk, considering who is giving the message of the eulogy, may have been uncomfortable with it and that was on purpose. And if you were uncomfortable with the message, i say good, because that message what reverend al sharpton said challenged many people in this country to be better. To do better. And so agven i say if that message was uncomfortable for you. I seen people, i thought it was a little too political. I thought this or thought that. I thought it was actually pitch perfect. I thought thats the reason the floyd family had someone like reverend al sharpton deliver this message. It was very powerful. It was very now. And my biggest take away is that what i have been saying, wolf. And youve heard me say it at least five or six times, about these young people are out there trying to pull us old folk, us people who are we who are stuck in our ways into the future. They want a future in this country that is not like the one where the mayor said george floyd lived. They want people to be able live a better future. And so i think that we need to listen to these young people. We need to move into the future. Sometimes people get upset. That i say my way of life has changed. You are not paying attention to me. Im unheard. My voice is not heard. Many times thats for a reason. Is because you havent ob the train. Are you not progressing. You are not moving into the future so the world is going to leave you behind. So i hope these young people are conducting the train that is going to leave a whole lot of people behind if they dont get ott on it and get on board. Thats an important point, yesterday we heard former president obama make the point, he is hopeful, upbeat. He sees the crowds, you see a very diverse crowd gathering. Don says, a lot of young people are out there protesting. Wolf, i think thats exactly right. I want to just admit something right now, that when we look at this scene and when we a think about the number of times we have been here before. I agree with you, don, its hard to be hopeful sometimes. Its really easy to be cynical. We said never again. Weve called for justice, retweeted hash tags, done that over and over and over again. I had the toughest conversation with my young daughter why people are surprised so many are as angry as they r. I tell you this, the energy that a lot of people have consumed this country over the last week, in particular, that energy channelled correctly is the same energy that built this country. Its the energy that abolished slavery to carry us through civil rights. As we channel that through the long term work in city halls and state legislatures, in the courtrooms im definitely talking ability amending the Police Contracts who protect officers. We saw yesterday, problem with kroll, the president of the Minneapolis Police union in a letter this week lamenting the National Press wont refer to george floyd as a violent criminal. That is significant policing. Thank you so much for joining us. Thanks very much. Don, dont go too far away. I have questions for you coming up. I quickly want to go to cnns brian todd. Tell our viewers where you are, what we are seeing. We see live pictures from new york and also where you are in washington. Wolf we are at 16th and 8th street. This young man, this protest leader is sharing a we shall overcome. He has a great voice. Take a listen here. Really quick. Reporter so this is starting out as a real night of hope. It is also a test of faith here. Because dc city officials, police and National Guard have completely withdrawn from this area. We are fenced off. You cant get in the park. It is a marked difference, wolf, from last fate when there were National Guardsmen block access to there area to the access to 16th street over here and behind us. You couldnt really, the movement was so restricted that it really had this look of kind of a militaristic private. Today the d. C. Mayor murial bowser said she wants all national traps, federal troops from outside d. C. To leave d. C. That means about 4500 federal National Guardsmen from 10 different states, the mayor says she wants them out. They are, you know, the d. C. The mayor and d. C. Police are testing the faith of protesters. Theyre trusting the protesters today tonight to be peaceful. Thats why the Law Enforcement has completely withdrawn. You cant even see them, except, wolf, on the other side of that fence where you see a few officers. So hopes are high for tonight to keep it peaceful. Well check back with you, brian todd, near the white house, athena jones just crossed over with a huge crowd from brooke len into manhattan. Tell our viewers what you are seeing right now. All right. Wolf, you are right. We left what was a Memorial Prayer Service at brooke lens cabinet plaza a long time ago. Its taken a who ill to cross this bridge. Considering there are thousands of people who came out for that protest. Many of them joined the march across the bridge. A peaceful protest. Frequently, we heard them chanting peaceful protests along with no justice, no peace, black lives matter. This protest has been escorted by police in cruisers, blocking off the inbound lane of the brooklyn bridge. So they can cross this is one of the messages we order tat at that prepared Memorial Service earlier. A lot of talk about the knead to your honor the this eulogy we are seeing into action. Political action. Into organizing action. We heard a congresswoman that represents the part of brooke len this Memorial Service was held in. She says its not enough to order. Its not enough to march. Its not enough to protest. Its not enough to protest. Its not enough to org phase, so we are seeing these larger people protest, arriving here in foley square, downtown manhattan, right outside the cou courthouse we are not sure what will happen next. We can tell you this crowd is fired up. There is a lot of energy here. Its a very diverse crowd. Very peaceful right now, athena jones, thanks very much. We will check back with you as well. These protests are still continuing. Day ten of whats been going on here in the United States. We are following all the breaking news, we will have more on the First Court Appearance and became for the Police Officer charged with aiding and abetting George Floyds death and protests taking place, well have updates from all akrcross e countries. These are live pictures coming in from capitol hill here in washington. The covid19 pandemic is creating Food Insecurity on a scale not seen in decades. An estimated 54 million americans will struggle with hunger. With 200 food banks and 60,000 meal programs, feeding america is the largest hungerrelief organization in the country. Join Morgan Stanley in supporting feeding america and your local Community Food bank. These are live picture coming in from capitol hill here in washington, d. C. As well as from new york city, where large numbers of protesters have gathered to peacefully express their deep concerns of Racial Injustice here in the United States. Lets discuss all the latest developments, our chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin is with us and our cnn anchor don lemon still as well, jeffrey, three of the exPolice Officers involved in floyds death appeared in court today, their Defense Strategy appears to be to lay the blame on the former officer Derek Chauvin. What do you make of that . It makes sense for at least two of those dependents because two of the officers are very, very new Police Officers. One has been on the force for about a year. One less than a year. And it makes sense for them to say look officer chauvin was on the force for 20 plus years. He looked like he knew what he was doing. We were forming his example. Thats an attempt at a defense. Officers are still responsible for their own behavior. I dont know if the jury would buy it, certainly given the big difference and experience between two of the officer and chauvin, that is something that makes sense as a Defense Strategy. We can see on the video publicly released, jeffrey, was it only chauvin who physically pinned down george floyd. Two of the other exPolice Officer also helped restrain him. Which will maker that defense harder to raise. Its one thing to follow orders to stand around and protect a scene. Its another thing to help smother a man to death. You dont have to be an experienced cop to know that murder is wrong and that truly will be one of the prosecution themes if the defense is, we were too young and experienced. But certainly, you know, when you have such a vast difference and experience between those officers that is something thats bound to come up in the trial. Certainly will. I spoke yesterday here in the situation room with the Minnesota Attorney general keith ellisson, who spoke very confident, upgrading the charge against that exPolice OfficerDerek Chauvin from third degree to Second Degree murder. What does that tell you . Because these cases against Police Officers as you well know despite the video and overwhelming evidence are by no means easy . Theyre not. And there is a big problem hanging on the horizon of this case. Which is a change of venue. I could almost guarantee that all four of these defendants if they go to trial will say there was too much pretrial publicity in the twin cities and it has to be moved somewhere else in minnesota. Where anywhere else in minnesota is much whiter. There are many fewer people of color outside of the twin cities than inside the twin cities, which will change the jury pool significantly in this trial and its a sad but true fact that white jurors have historically been a lot more sympathetic to white Police Officer whos claim who are charged with crimes and that is something given the magnitude of the publicity might well happen in this case arc change of venue. I want you to react to what we heard, its a Memorial Service which we all watched for george floyd. The family spoke about striving for one Justice System for all americans not one for black americans and a separate one for white americans. So what is your reaction when you hear that and see potentially as ben crump said there is a third system for Police Officers . You took the words out of my mouth you said there was a justice and al sharpton said we should have the same system of justice for people who wear blue jeans and a blue uniform. Jeffrey said thats not always the case the question i am seeing people raise, the attorneys raise in court today in their hearing, they believe these Police Officers are overcharged. So theyre trying to get charges thrown out or reduced and i dont know, jeff i have a legal expert here. But you know if this had happened to civilians and you helped someone kill someone, it would be pretty explicit, pretty much case closed as to what your fate problem. I dont see a lot of people in the court system, civilians getting off from being overcharged. We see that quite often when it comes to these police cases, thats why im reticent to say some change will come of these things. We dont know. Weve sat around and there have been videotape, officers arent charged. Its not by no means a slam dunk as a lot of the legal experts pointed out, dont go too far away, thanks very much. There is more breaking news we are watching here in the situation room. The white house seeming increasingly like a fork for if you barriers. We are following the protest from coast to caste. Well show you whats going on when we come back. Veterans, do you have a va loan . If you do, one call to newday can save you 2000 a year. More notifications are going up around the white house as protests in washington clearly are continuing. Advisor peaceful protests under way right now. Lets go to our chief White House Correspondent jim acosta. The white house often referred to as the peoples house. Tonight the people are being kept further away. Reporter that is certainly the case, the Trump Administration is building what increasingly looks like a fortress around the white house. Early this morning, crews began extending metal fencing, a steel wall if you will, all the way down to constitution avenue across from the national mall. And there is some of that fencing right there. That is on top of the fencing thats already surrounding the white house. In addition to that, there remains a militarized and Police Presence in Lafayette Park around the white house, giving this area something out of an authoritarian country. Not peoples house as you described it. On top of all of that, white house Officials Say all option are on the table for dealing with these protesters. In the meantime, attorney general william barr is defending the use of force to clear out Lafayette Square after the photo op on pond saying authorities had hoped to establish a secure perimeter according to attorney general and ran out of time. Heres more on what he had to say. It was our hope to be able to do that relatively quickly. Before many demonstrators appeared that day. Unfortunately, because of the difficulty in getting appropriate forces units into place, by the time they were able to move our perimeter up to there had been a number arc large number of protesters had assembled. I did not know that he was going to do that until later in the day after our plans were well under way to move the perimeter. So there was no correlation between our tactical plan of moving the perimeter out by one block and the president s going over to the church. The president asked members of his cabinet to go over there with him. Reporter and that claim from the attorney general. Now as for that stinging statement from defense secretary james mattis accusing the president of dividing instead of uniting the u. S. Former white house chief of staff john kelly is defending the retired general telling the Washington Post mattis is a quote honorable man and disputed the president s claim that mr. Trump fired mattis. Kelly says mattis resigned and the president quote clearly forgotten how it actually happened or is confused end quote in response to that statement. The alaska senator murcowski says she agrees and added she is struggling whether she will support the president come this fall with the election. Wolf. Jim acosta, stand by. Don lem isnt still with us. I was the cnn White House Correspondent in 1995 right after the Oklahoma City bombing, a truck bombing of the murrah federal building. They were afraid of a truck bombing at the white house. That security was bolstered dramatically back then. But now we see it even bolstered more as this line continues to expand beyond the perimeter even of the white house. Reporter just looking at these pictures washington, they are images of fear. Images of a president who is desperate and who is afraid. An administration desperate and afraid, sealing them off, quite literally and physically from the American People. We have to remember, the trumps, the administration, the advisers, they dont own the white house. They are simply borrowing it because the American People have afforded them the opportunity to live there and work there. They draw a salary from the American People. The American People hired them temporarily to work in these facilities. Basically public housing. But, what it is is the peoples house and now it has become the peoples fortress. So america now looks like the most famous house in the world. Even more famous in 10 downing street is now a fortress of fear. This president afraid, running down into a bunker and then pretending a few days later that he was just inspecting it. These photographs are embarrassing. Its embarrassing that theyre pushing protesters back. Its understandable what happened during the Oklahoma City bombing, that they would want to secure the area. But for protesters on the streets exercising their rights. Cmon, this is awful. Don, stand by. There is a lot more news we are following. We have live coverage of the protests there happening across the United States. Well update you on that when we come back. We are continuing to follow the peaceful protests coasttocote. If stlaepgs, folks are marching in los angeles, folks are marching there. We will update you on those protests. As we want to do so, we will bring in a professor of international relations, the author of the book how to be an antiracist. Thanks so much for joining us. In light of this National Reckoning, this is day 10 we are seeing right now, people are turning to your best selling book. What does that till about this moment and people arent familiar, what does it mean to be antiracist . Well, it means, first and foremost, that the person has the willingness to look at themselves and admit the times in which theyre being racist. They have the willingness to look at their nation and sees the ways its race it. They have the willingness to change themselves and the country. Many people have that willingness and that courage right now. You point out that people who say theyre not racist can still uphold racist systems evenbier that inaction. So what would you sa i to people who are sitting on the side lines, for example, right now . That there was a time in this country in 1860s, 4 Million People were slaves and those slave holders wanted people to sit on the side lines and do nothing. So that racist institution could continue. And so to do nothing in the face of racial inequity is to allow it to continue. Youve also focused in on tracking the Racial Disparities unfolding in the coronavirus pandemic more than 107,000 american versus now died in a disproportionate number are minorities, especially africanamericans, at a time when so many people are also out of work, 42 million over the last 11 weeks alone, a lot of families have lost loved ones, theyre watching whats going on, theyre certainly watching videos of Police Violence, how do we broaden our understanding of all of these underlying inequity surface. I think we canty about how were facing a viral pandemic in covid19. Were facing an economic pandemic obviously with this recession. We are also facing a racial poke, as the racial pandemic of people dying as a result of Police Violence and the color of their skin. I think people who are resisting on the streets in many ways are resition all three pontiacs aand policy makers refused to put in place mechanisms to prevent those three pandemics. Last night. And we had it live here the former president Barack Obama Says he sees these protests different from the civil rights protests that happened in the 1960s. He sees what he calls a Broad Coalition and a crosssection of america out on the streets right now. You are a historian. You are about to begin a few career as a professor at Boston University. You have been teaching at American University here in washington. What do you think about these protests compared to previous eras . I do see some significant difference. I would agree with president obama if that the makeup of the protesters are distinct. And i also think the demands, how serious these protesters are about transforming this country and how fed up they are with the injustices that that are persisting. How they do not want to live another year with these injustices, they want change now. Thanks, so much for joining us. You will be the director of the Boston University center for antiracist research, good luck in that new challenge. I appreciate you joining us. Thank you, wolf. And stay with us, were following automatic breaking news, much more right after this. Dropping to near record lows, my team at newday usa is helping more veterans refinance than ever. The newday va streamline refi is the reason why. It lets you shortcut the loan process and refinance with no income verification, no appraisal, and no out of pocket costs. Im going to need you to leave. You get relentless protection. [ baseball bat cracks ] amidst all of this, there is growing concern among the trump team about reelection chances in the midst of the crises facing the u. S. Right now. We are told the president is concerned and the campaign is concerned. What are you finding out . Reporter no doubt donald trump and his team had hoped it would be a choice between himself and former Vice President biden. But this is a referendum on his performance and that has some republicans nervous. President trump huddling with campaign lieutenants today, less than five months until election day. The combination of crises playing out across the country, the culpable oupl tumble to 202. The unemployment, the covid deaths, and the death of george floyd by police. The new polls show trump falling behind biden not just nationally, but in key states trump carried in 2016. As he won, he is now trailing. And biden leads in arizona which trump carried in 2016. Another sign, a fox news poll showing him in a tight race with biden. Looking to shore up his campaign, he has spent nearly 2 million on adds since may. In public the president is projecting confidence, slugging off the polling numbers, showing him lagging. Just like last time i was losing to hillary in every state and won every state. Other than two or three polls which i use and doing well, but i saw another poll where i am winning another swing state substantially and why wouldnt i. Reporter the president and his campaign is about to get more aggressive. The field team has been put on the side line since the coronavirus since march. We understand they are ready to redeploy those resources and start campaigning, that could mean door to door, training, everything as they get ready to gear up this campaign. Next, more on the emotional Memorial Service for george floyd. And we will update you on the latest protests across the country.
